1. 1. Fashion Design for Kids - INTRODUCTION: So you want to be a fashion designer. You like to get dressed up and look pretty. You like to have a certain style that shows your personality. Do you like to draw and be creative? If the answer is yes to the previous questions. And it sounds like yes to me, you have started your journey into the world of fashion. Welcome aboard my young fashionistas. I am so happy to be your guide and teacher. My name is Nora, like you, my interest in fashion was sparked at a young age. I was doodling and sewing before and knew how to ride a bike. So grab a few pencils, some needle and thread, and most importantly, bring your creative minds. You've come to the right place. Fashion 101. Here we come. 2. 2. The Design Project: Hi everyone. So for your project, we're going to make something really cool. I have here a sneaker, which I embellished with reminds stones. And I picked this project because it's a lot of fun and it's easy to do. And you can decorate it any which way you like. As you can see here, I picked Ryan Stones in different colors and I applied them with glue onto the snicker. Snicker, I use this rocket dog. And it was a white sneaker at first. And what I ended up using in the end was a white, blue, and hot pink. But you can use other types of sneakers. You can apply it to vans, e.g. or even kids. And it should be very easy to do for you and a lot of fun and I'm going to show you how to do it. But first I'm going to show you a couple of other things like the supplies and then I'm actually demonstrate it for you. 3. 3. The Projects Supplies: Now for the supplies, I wanted to show you this little piece of envelope because it has a size chart on it. And that's how you can decipher the difference between the Ryan Stones. Now, we need to get Ryan's tones with a flat back. As you can see, these are Ryan Stones, but they can have a diamond back or a flat back. So a diamond and back would be pointy. And a flat back obviously is easy to glue because it has a flat back. And then the other side is the rind stone. Here is the sizing. So 4 mm is very small. 6 mm is about the right size. 8 mm is a bigger, and then 10 mm is really big. I use different sizes. Here. I used some blue, some baby blue, and then I use some hot pink. As you can see, this case comes with different sizes and it does have a flat back. As you can see there, some of these. And they can also get really, really tiny, which makes them harder to glue. And these are the white diamonds. I haven't opened this case yet. And there's this case which I used up a little bit of already. And the kind of hard to open, but there's, you know, they come with different sizes and as you can see, those are the flood backs as well. And then the other side is the diamond shape, right in stone shape. Sorry about that. And what we're gonna do is apply this. You can see if you buy a case of Ryan Stones with flat backs, you can have a selection. This is rather small. I would recommend maybe a little bigger size, like the size of six millimeter. These are smaller, but it depends if you're going into a little crevice, little tight spot, so you might want to use smaller ones and these have multiple colors, these cases, that's why it's easier to buy them like that. Then finally, you're going to need a shoe. So this is the other shoe that to the one I showed you before, which I had already done as an example. And this is the one I'm going to show you. I've already Started it a little bit, but I'm going to show you the other side and how to apply the glue. So you'll also need the Rhine stones, this shoe, preferably in your size or someone else's size if you're making it for somebody else. This glue is great. It's clear, as you can see here, and it's called E6 thousand. And it applies really, really well with these Ryan Stones. They won't come off with this. You just have to make sure that you add it well on the canvas. As you can see this as Canvas, you can apply it to leather. But if you're going to apply to leather than use this glue, this will stick on anything for a long time. These are the tools that come sometimes with the the rind stone cases. Here they give you this little pencil. It has like kinda like a waxy tip. And there's this tool, I guess it's for a smaller size rind stone. So it comes as well. And then this one I bought separately, it's a crystal katana and the tip is a wax tip and it's really easy to pick up the rind stones that way, which is what I'm going to show you now. 4. 4. A DEMO for the Project: So we're going to work not the side that's already done. As you can see, the other side. So I can show you how to apply the glue to the shoe and work your way across the shoe and apply the blue Ryan Stones to this canvas shoe. Now, you want to work rather quickly. So with this tool, by the way, you can find it on Amazon. It's not that hard to find and there's different versions of it. So you don't exactly have to buy that brand. But if you'd like this brand, then that's what you can do. So you grab with the tool to waxy tip the front side of the grindstone and you apply it across the shoe. You try and work evenly. If not, if it doesn't fit properly, you can push it along a little bit. The rind stone to be in place, to be nice and snug next to the, next to the other ones. And I'm dropping it here for some reason. Let me get another one and apply it along. And that's how you do it. You just want to make sure that, you know, the the limestones are flat and there's enough glue so that they don't come, they won't pop out. So this is how you would apply them little by little. Take your time, but don't waste your time because the glue dries rather fast. And that's why I only do one strip at a time of glue. And once I'm done with this, like little level, this strip along the way, I add more over it. As you can see, some of it has overlapped already there. So I just keep going along. There might be a little bit of residue of glue on this waxy tip. That's why it's not picking up as well. And I apply the next layer. And you can clean off the excess glue if you want to. But I find that it it's fine. It doesn't really get in my way. So I just tend to leave it. But that's how you do it. And I'll meet you back here when I'm done with this section. As you can see here, I applied to all of the glue and I finished off the application of the blue Ryan Stones. Now I'm going to move on to other parts of the shoe. And I hope you'll have fun with this project and take care of doing the same with your own shoes and make them look really, really pretty. And once you're done, you can reapply the shoelace or change it out for something more colorful like a ribbon or another pair of shoe laces of the same color of as, pick a color that you've applied on the shoe. So enjoy and have a lot of fun with. 5. 5. What is Fashion Design?: So what exactly is fashion? There are many ways to describe it. Perhaps the best way is that it's a form of self-expression. It is a way of telling the world or room that I am here, but without having to say so, instead you let your close to the cocking. E.g. this girl is saying, I'm cool. This girl in the flowery dress is saying, I'm artsy and fun. And this girl here says, I'm confident with her frilly dress. Fashion and style has been around for many, many years. In the sixties, the worst stuff like this. Bohemians, bandanna, tied eyes, you name it. And in the 70s, Fashion was more like this. It was considered that bell bottoms were cool with big colors. E.g. from this slide here. Not to be outdone. Along came the 80s, the 1980s with their bright colored sweatshirts, sweat suits, leg warmers, et cetera. And then if you go far, far back to the 1700s, you'll see that they wore clothes that were more like this, very different. So as you can see, styles and fashion chains changes very much over time. 6. 6. Creating A Dress: Creating a dress. There are many important and skilled workers that have a hand in creating that beautiful dress that you'd love to wear. Here are some of those very important people. The head fashion designer there, the idea of people. They are the creative ones. They usually have a great sense of style ended there to share it with the world. What starts out as an idea in their head ends up being that really cool dress that you love to where there are many steps along the way and some very talented workers. But it's the fashion designer that comes up with the original concept. They are the captain of the ship. The textile designers. They're the people that create patterns for fabrics based on the original designs they receive from the fashion designer and put them on the fabrics. Like this paisley motif, for instance, can be put onto a fabric and a repeat design. Many of the times textile designers create these patterns, fabrics on their own for fashion designers, or even fashion designers go to their stores to buy them. Apparel pattern makers. Apparel pattern makers cut out the shapes, also known as patterns, to be given to the seamstress. They use the fashion designers measurements to create the patterns. Hence them being called Pattern Makers. I like to call them the scissor people. The seamstress. There, the sewing people. They take those loose pattern pieces from the pattern maker and they sew them together to put the finishing touches on the dress. And there you have it. Overview of our people. 7. 7. Tools & Methods to Making a Dress: So now let's spend a little time talking about some of the tools and methods that they need to make those dresses. And most importantly, that make you look beautiful and fashion designer. Color is one of the primary elements of fashion. As you know, bright and different colors make the world a more interesting place. They also make it funner. Ask yourself the question. If you had a choice to view the world in black and white, not all its beautiful colors. What would you choose? Fashion designers are well aware of how fun and powerful colors can be. And that's why they liked to make their clothes shine like the rainbow. How do they do it? Well, let's see how they create color palettes. This is a hand-picked group of colors that the fashion designer chooses to make their clothing. In our case, the amazing fashion designer will be making a dress. She will most likely be using bright colors. For instance, pen tone colors. Or you could also check Pinterest for Palettes. Create a mood board, an inspiration board. A mood board is made by the fashion designer. It is a collage or a collection of random things on a board that are connected by a common theme. The designer will look at it from time-to-time for inspiration and ideas for what they are trying to create. Anything can be put on a mood board, amazing pictures, stickers, buttons, drawings, et cetera. There are really no rules, but most importantly, they should have a common mood and a theme. For instance, here we have a theme of Santa Fe. We have drums, air balloons, and then we have the toning colors and swatches. And then we have the models, as well as the flats which are drawn. The clothing that are drawn on the model, drawing the clothes on the body. So you want to learn how to place the outfits to fit perfectly on the models? Well, good luck. Okay, I'm kidding. Of course. Let's learn how to do that. Just like the fashion designers crop key sketching. You must first start out with an outline of the human form. The fancy word for that in the fashion world is crow key. No, I didn't say croquette. So stop thinking of food. I said crow key. Haha. Well anyway, back to the cookie. A cookie is a quickly drawn sketch of a live model. After you have drawn this, gently place it under another piece of paper and then trace over the outline and use the new drawing to work on. On this second drawing, you can dress your model however you like. For instance, if you draw a dress, you start by drawing the dress over the outline. Tip number one, don't throw away your original Crow key outline as you can always reuse this for future drawings. Tip two. Designers tend to draw their models taller, longer legs and arms to give the models and air of importance and a larger-than-life look. And Tip three. Just because designers usually draw tall and thin models, this does not always have to be the case. As you know, there's beauty in all shapes and sizes. So you can feel free to draw your cookie outlines in whatever shapes and plus sizes that you feel. The beauty is in our differences. These Crow keys will be put on a presentation board as we talked about earlier. Then you will show it to whoever you need to show it to impress them. Draping. Draping is a process where the fashion designer places the fabric on the mannequin and makes their markings using pins and fabric pencils so they can shape it to the human body. They use cheap fabric called mucin. This is an inexpensive fabric as it is used for measuring and drafting. And in that stage of the process, in the end, it is not the fabric that will be used for the dress. It's only a practicing and measuring an editing type fabric, the mucin, the textile designer. Types of fabric. Textiles are types of cloth or woven fabric. Here's some examples of textiles. Textile designers create all kinds of designs that are woven or knitted into cloth or printed on fabric. They usually start with a specific design or a common theme, and they arrange them into eye-catching repeat patterns. In addition to creating the layout, they also decide what fabrics to put on the designs. Here's some popular fabric set designers. Textile designers use spools of cotton, silk or Wolf, for instance, the pattern maker. In a nutshell, pattern makers take them useless from the mannequin with all of the fashion designers markings on it, and then cut them into various shapes, also known as patterns, to be sent to the seamstress so they can all be sewn together into the final product. In our case, the final product is you're pretty dress. It is important that the patterns and shapes that you sent to the seamstress are measured correctly. The seamstress, a seamstress is the last person that helps out with the making of the dress. She takes all of the shapes or patterns sent to her by the pattern makers and so's them together as you see here, a sewing machine. The final dress summary steps in creating a dress. As you have been introduced to the people that make all of the steps in creating a dress. We started with the fashion designer, That's sketches, the dress on a crow key. Then the fashion designer works with the textile designer to create a cool design for the final fabric. The fashion designer hangs the Muslim onto the mannequin, also known as draping. The fashion designer mixed markings and cuts onto the mucins. The pattern maker removes them, use Lynn from the mannequin. The pattern maker lays them useless on top of the pattern paper on a flat table. The definition of a pattern paper is usually like a sturdy brown construction paper. Pattern makers then cut the pattern paper into shapes. Pattern makers then take the cut-out brown paper and use it as a final tablet. Once these final shapes or patterns or cut out from the final fabric, they are sent to the seamstress who sows everything together into a visual dress. Our final dress. 8. 8.
