1. Welcome to Fancy Flourishes!: Hi, I'm Keiko. In this class, I'll show you how to embellish your hand lettering with beautiful flourishes. Flourishes can be intimidating, but I'll walk you through the basics of flourishing and show you step by step, how and where to flourish and also we're not. We'll start with fun. Warm up exercises flourish our way through the lower and upper case alphabet. Embellish a few words, and in the end we'll design a short quote. There are some rules to flourishing, but there's also a lot of freedom, and basically the sky's the limit, and I want you to experiment and have fun. I'm providing you with a big bundle of printable worksheets for the complete lower and uppercase alphabet and T cheats for different floors shapes. If you don't have a printer, you can follow this class with just a pen, pencil and any paper you have a hand. Are you ready for fancy flourishes? Okay, let's jump right in 2. Flourish in the Air: you can literally flourish anywhere and everywhere, and you don't even need a pen to practice. There are almost no limits and no excuses not to practice. Warm up with writing a few words in the air, get up from your chair and move that arm around. Have you ever tried writing with two pins, if not tried? Now just pick up two pens and wrap a rubber band around them. Draw some shapes, lift your hand and your arm and move your whole shoulder. Draw a figure eight shape over and over, tell your shoulder feels relaxed. 3. Basic shapes: cannot start with some basic floor shapes to warm up, and also, when you have practiced these enough, you can basically create any sort of flourish based on these on these shapes. So let's start with the loop, or you can do this with a cancel or with the brush pins. Okay, start with this loop and just continue. It's always a good idea to practice every flourish in every shape in the opposite direction . So you train your muscle memory not only to one side, also to the other one. Next up is the spiral. So this is a really good practice for warming up before you start lettering and feel free to do this as much as you like. And at last, the figure. Eight. Um, just basically two loops connected, and for this one, it's it's good when you lift your hand off the paper and try to do it in one smooth scoop in the beginning, it's okay if those sides are not the same size. So I think it's more important that you try and loosen up your hand, get your hand off the paper, and then also from the other side. Opposite direction, which is more difficult for me, as you can see if you like. You can use this practice sheet also to practice some variations off these shapes down here . You can, of course, and more hoops. If you do something like this, the more you practice thes basic shapes, the easier it's going to be for you later to create smooth flourishes. 4. Favorite flourishes: before we start flourishing away through the whole alphabet. Let me show you a few of my favorite flourishes for exit strokes. So the end of the word is usually a very good spot to place of flourish, and I have a few that I use all the time. It's a good idea to create a cheat sheet with flourishes and also to create new ones every now and then, so that you don't end up making the same floor shows over and over again. OK, so this is probably the flourish I do the most. Just going up over figure eight flourish like this, and then this is basically a variation of that one. So you go up over and then add what I call a heart shaped flourish here. And then this is what I usually call my pretzel flourish, because it kind of looks like a pretzel a little bit, works with a lot of letters and also in the other direction. So this one came over to the left side, and this one goes in the opposite direction. This is the typical figure. Eight flourish, and then the last one is little more difficult. It's based on the figure eight floors and it adds one more stroke here, Uh, come back and then go in a parallel line here. So I left him space for your guys down here. You can either copy the flourishes from appear. And of course, you can add your own spin to throw. And as you can see, it's really they're really all just variations off the basic flora shapes that we looked at before. If you're looking for more inspiration, check out my Pinterest board that I set up especially for this class. Fancy flourishes. You can find the Pinterest board under my handle the Aloha Studios. 5. What makes a good flourish? 5 tips: Let's start with the word Aloha. Notice how I lift off my hand and move my whole arm while I'm doing the flourish. Okay, so the first rule is to base all of your flourishes off often oval shape. This is an oval shape, and here's another one, and the whole flourish is an oval shape as well. Same over here, oval shape, over shape and the whole flourish as well. This doesn't mean that you flourishes can't be round, and in some cases it might look really good. But I personally prefer my flourishes to be oval tip number two cross the lines at a 90 degree angle. So, for example, there's a 90 degree angle here and over here, here and here. And this is almost a 90 degree angle over here and here and here. Not exactly 90 degrees. But I try to stay as close as possible to a 90 degree angle because it's considered toe look more pleasing to the eye. But again, this is just the tip doesn't mean that all your flourishes have to be in a 90 degree angle with this. A. These lines on top here are clearly not in a 90 degree angle. But if you like this kind of angle, that's totally fine. I personally prefer the 90 degree angles. Tip number three across thin and thing, and thick and thin lines don't cross thick lines and this example here I'm crossing too thick lines on top of the A, and this takes away from the eligibility of the A puts too much emphasis on the flourish. Instead, try to guide your flourish in a way that avoids crossing too thick lines. Okay, let's look at the capital letter a large through here. As you can see, I've crossed a thin line with a thick line and then thin, thin, thick line and thin line again and thin lines. Tip number four. Put less weight on the floor ish than on the letter. That's right, the word high and flourish over here. As you can see, this is the weight of the down stroke and another one here and in comparison, the flourishes a lot thinner. Then the down strokes. Here, let's go back to the capital letter a down, stroke down stroke and see here the weight off the flourishes a lot thinner than my thick down stroke tip number five. Avoid so called hot spots. This is when multiple lines cross in one spot. Okay, it's write the letter A. And then here I'm crossing multiple lines in this one spot. It confuses three I because it tries to follow one line and it diverges into too many directions and the flourish gets too crowded. So try and loosen up the flourish like here and cross Onley two lines. Let's do a quick recap. Number one Oval shapes as in here and in here. Number two. Cross your lines at a 90 degree angle or as close as possible to a 90 degree angle. As in here, Number three Cross Onley thin and thick lines is in here, or thin and thin lines as in here. Number four. The weight. The flourish should be less than the weight off the letters. As you can see here, the weight of my flourishes are less than the weight of all the down strokes on the letters . Number five. Try to avoid hot spots where multiple lines cross in the same spot. Try to cross on Lee two lines and is a last tip. Look at the whole word and see how the flourishes balance in relation to the word. Is there some empty white space that needs to be filled, or does everything look nice and balanced? 6. Now, where to put that flourish?: Let's look at places that work best for adding flourishes Number one at the beginning or at the end of the word, Let's take the word love and add a flourish at the beginning and at the end. So I'll start with the capital L, out of Flores here at the bottom, and then I'll try an echo it with this flourish at the end to create a balance and to fill the white space evenly. Number two underneath or around a word or a quote. Let's look at the ward dream, so I'll write it out first in capital letters, and now you could make a flourish under the word or around the word. Let's try under the word first flourish here and then right out the word and starting from the last letter here, I take the floors all the way down like this. I'm not really liking that empty white space over here too much, so let's try something else. I will try and put a flourish all around the word I write the word again, and then, starting from the last letter, I go all around the word in a cloud shaped, which also fits the meaning of the word quite nicely. Notice how different the words look with these two different flourishes. The hand lettering is almost the same, but the flourish make them look pretty different. There are endless possibilities to change the look of a word just by changing the flourishes. Number three, a central letter or a letter of a word. It might not always be possible to do that, but let's have a look at a word where it's possible that shows a word prince and writing it out. First a star with a P and then add the flourish here with the end. I could take the this flourish over here and connected to the dot of the I. Now let's look at the end flourish. Even though it's quite Bagan comes all the way down. It's still possible to read it as the letter M. Sometimes this might not be the case. There are some letters that I wouldn't let her from, and I'll show you in a minute. What? I mean, the next word is aunt again. The central letter is an in, and we also have the N T connection. So I bring the flourish, Uh, and then connected directly with the tea like this. There are a few letters that I don't recommend flourishing from when they're in the middle of the word. Those letters are C B I hell. And you let me show you why First example is the sea as in Doc. So when you flourish here with the sea, it starts looking a little weird and it could be mistaken for a G or a J. The next letter is E. When you've large from the E like this, it looks like a P. And the word C could easily be mistaken for the word spa. The next letter his I as in the word rich flourish from the I, which makes it appear almost like a J. Of course, you might still be able to read the word correctly, but it would be easier to flourish from the first or the last letter here from the R th The next letter is the L as a cliff. Now, when I put a flourish here on the l starts looking like an f pretty much various similar to the other efs in the word the last letter is to you, as in fun and the flourish here looks like a why. So these are the letters that I don't recommend for flourishing when there are in the center of the word. You can't, of course, letter from them when they are at the end of the word or at the beginning, off the word. 7. Uppercase A-L: Let's start with the upper case Alphabet. I'm working with brush pin. But if you don't feel comfortable working with a brush, Ben, please feel free to use a pencil. I will show you how I am. Let earthy examples here on the worksheet, and then I will show you a couple other variations you could do with each letter. As you can see here, I also added numbers and arrows to indicate the direction of the stroke. In this case, I start the letter A on the left side. Go down like this, loop around, add a heart shaped nourish, and for the second stroke, I start on the left side. Here, swoop over and add a loop on top. And then also add the loop here. If you don't like the loop, flourish on top. You can also simplify the letter instead of coming this way with a loop, you can just come straight down from here, like so, and then finish with a loop like this. And there's also a different way to write the letter A. So you start here and come up like this thick down stroke and then loop over to the left side. like this. And then, of course, you can add another little one here. I hope I'm not doing this too fast for you guys. If you want to see what I did here one more time, you can go back and watch it one more time. But a lot of the flourishes are gonna be repeated. So this low here with the A, it's gonna be similar to the one here with the B. And if you continue watching and writing along with me, you'll see that you'll get the hang of flourishes very soon because you will repeat similar shapes over and over again. For the B, go down like this, make a double loop flourish for the second stroke. We start here and intertwined these two flourishes. Add a little one and except like this, Instead of putting the emphasis on this stroke, you can add more loops on top, make a simple loop here, and then you can come in like this at a little heart shaped flourish. Or you can make more loops down here like this one too three and finish a little more simple like this, or you can write the B in a completely different way like this and finish like this. I personally really like this type of bi, but some of you might prefer the other one. It's up to you. The letter C is just one stroke like this. And here it's important that you emphasize the down stroke when you use a brush been and go a little lighter on the flourishes. So the legibility of the sea is still there. If you add a little loop, flourish like this, just make sure the main down stroke is the thickest of them all like this. And for this one, you can do a little variation on the bottom and on the top, so on the top like this, and then add Ah, figure eight at the bottom. The de is also one stroke. You start here with the down stroke and go over and flourished the exit stroke like this and you can also bring the exit stroke over to the other side of the letter. Start here, then finished the d like this and then go over to the right side and they had a little little here in here. Or you can bring the flourish down on the side and below the letter. So perhaps start here and then just loop around like this down like this. And just as we did with a B, there's also ah different way to write the letter d like this. Start with a loop, go down and finish like this. The letter e notice how I move the paper around so it's more comfortable for me to letter at the right angle. Okay, so the e is one stroke and you start here and then at the flourish at the bottom of the letter, like so and for the next variation will stored way over at the left side. With a big loop, you can extend the flourish to the left side whenever you added to the beginning of a word . Another variation for the letter e would be to change up the bottom, flourish a little bit, start here and at a little loop here and bring the flourish down below the letter like this . And then you would continue writing over here. The letter f I make this with three strokes here, so 12 appear in them. Three. So start with number one and add to loop flourishes here, then intertwined the top, flourish here like so and then finish with the third stroke. You can put more emphasis. Um, the bottom Florence. Here we start here and then 12 and even three. And go out like this second stroke and then finish with the third stroke here. We can also bring the flourish over to this side and one small loop. And then you go through the stroke like this and their stroke. Or you can connect, um, thes two parts into one stroke. So start here. I had a little here. Then go up and connect directly like this, and then finish with the first stroke like this for the G. We start here inside the letter, go up down down here and finish a letter with a little loop flourish. So instead of going out here, you can also bring the flourish over to this side. And instead of starting here, you could start here like so go down and then flourish over to left side. Now, depending on which letter comes next in the word, you could also bring the floors over to the side like so. So flourish here and then go through over here and and the flourish like this. So, as I said, it depends a little bit on which letter comes next. This would work great for letters like a or I even, um h or any letter that does not go beyond this line. Because, for example, if you have, ah, a letter like a Why, like this? It might get confusing because you have to go down like this. So these kind of flourishes that go into the rest of the word work Well, if you have letters that stay above the baseline, you can let her the age with two strokes or with just one stroke. Let's start with this two stroke version here. Okay, So start here. Go over there one loop, second loop, and then started the second stroke here of the bottom and finish over there instead of starting the second stroke here at the bottom. Show you a different way in the next example. So you start here and then add more flourishes on the side and then finish the letter like this, or you can do it with just one stroke. Start here, Odomes, and loop over with just one stroke the letter. I is one stroke. I start over here, bring it up and down like this. This is a pretty simple version, and as a variation you can add some more flourishes over here. And you can also start or more on the left side like here and add one, two loops here. Another variation is to add more flourishes here from top. Make sure you don't go below the baseline so it doesn't end up looking like a J. Then one more at a tiny little loop Here, go down. Finish like this. I start the letter J just like I started the letter. I but go down below the baseline and at a little heart flourish and cross over. You can do a very Asian with the bottom flourish. Start here, go down and then loop three times, and then you can either finish here or go through like this. You can also make it a little more simple and finish it like this. And another variation would be the little pretzel or figure eight on the bottom. So, as you can see here, um, I created a little hot spot where all my lines meet in one spot. So to remedy that, try one more time. Go down, do the figure eight and go through here. The letter K has two strokes and you start over here and at two groups on the left. Move over here and then finish it like this. And then basically, you can add more flourishes at all corners here so you can start like us, go down and then intertwine blues like here and then coming with a spiral and finish it with a little pretzel down here. And another variation would be to start this. And then instead of coming in from the right side, you come in from over and left and then continue like this for the l start here down. This would be the simple version with a new been here. And then, of course, you could do something like this. You could also start on the left side, make this make a nice little online. And there it go. This with a long line at the bottom or he could You had a little punishing here, Chris. And then another one here 8. Uppercase M-Z: the letter M is made up off two strokes and the 1st 1 The first part of the letter resembles an end. Let's start over here on the left side and shape the first part of the letter Go down up and then come over here to the left. Over there, down, stroke and up. As a variation, you can bring the upstroke over to the right side. So instead of going to the left to go to the right Uh huh and, um and, uh, and go back through the letter and stop here. And then second, I'm stroke like this. Ah, third variation would be around em. Start over here, blue go down, up and round in another round one and looked through The letter N is basically in em without the second down stroke. So we start here, uh, down and then go out over and back over to the left. Like this, you can go in the opposite direction as well. Over to the right. So you start over here the left side up, down, up. And instead of going left, you go right like this and finish like this and as ah third variation can add more loops here on the left to before we go up, down and the add another one here and then you can add a stroke. Over here, the O is one stroke that is very close to one of the basic strokes. The spiral. A variation would go like this one, too, then through the middle and a little spiral and another variation, like the US, and add a little curl in the middle. For the P, I used two strokes. Start here. Go down one, two loops, then over here and finish like this. You can add a differently shaped loop over here one and then like this and intertwined the upper stroke like this. Add a tiny little hope and finish. For this variation, you can start the the top stroke in a different way like this. Add a little loop and then bring it over to finish. There is also a totally different version off the P, where you go down straight over and finish like this. I make this queue with one stroke, start with a spiral, then finish like this. You could also make it a little simpler, and it almost looks like the number two, or you could make it look a little more like the over here, start like this. And then you go back in at a loop and then out like this. The letter R is with two strokes. Start over here. And Luke, the second stroke, Tiny little Lou and then finished. You are like this. Now we can add more flourishes on this side. One, two in, three out and then, like those for the third example, can add a flourish here. So and as you can see, I started with the second stroke first, which I normally don't do. But in this case, I thought it was a little easier for the S. You start here at the baseline, go up, down and through like those. Or instead of starting here, you can start more on the upper left and then loop through. A different variation would be this s curve and finish with a double loop. You can add more flourishes at the bottom over here and then also here on the top. The T starts here, Luke one to and then into twine and finish like this. You can add more flourishes here of the bottom 12 and three, Another one here in spiral. Another variation would be something like this. And also here on top. The letter you is one stroke dumb down again and a big loop at the bottom. You can change the entrance stroke and start further to the left. Go up, down and up and down. And instead of looping through you and a little heart flourish likes can also add more loops in the beginning. Here. Okay, low on, down, up, down and finish like this for the being. Start over here, little loop down, up and loop through. Or you can change up the entrance, stroke down and and finish with a bigger flourish and a spiral or and another loop Here, go down, uh, and finish with a heart flourish. I make the W with one stroke. There are also two stroke versions, but I prefer to let it and one go and down and flourish. Here. You can add a more intricate flourish here in the end, down and up, and then go the other way like this go out like so. And then, of course, there's the round w Okay, so down and round and round up and come over and like this when I started hand lettering the X Give me the hardest time. I like it a little better now that I've practiced for a long while. I do it with two strokes, number one, and then curl up. There's also a different version. You start out with a shape that almost looks like a capital I and then merit on the opposite. Signed and as a variation, you can add more loops in all directions. But the letter why, on the other hand, was always one of my favorites. Start over here. Come back down, up, Um, and Big curl hand out. You can add more flourishes here. More loops down one, 23 and go through and add another one here. Or you can add a loop in the entrance. Stroke. Make it bigger down, up, down and blew through. And last but not least, is the letter Z one stroke, Lou. Down, up, you can do a variation at the top like this goes down straighter and add more loops at the bottom. There is also another version of the sea like this. Go down straight diagonal and then a stroke through. I prefer the first version, and I really like the round shapes here 9. lowercase a-l: next walk you through the lower case alphabet. If you need some inspiration for flourishes, you can always refer to this to cheat flourishes for exit strokes. And of course, you can always come up with your own flourishes as well. Let's start with the letter A hes down here, up, down, and then come over here to the left, a little loop and finish. So instead of going over to the left side like this, you can also reverse directions. You start the A just like the other one. But then, instead of coming up here, you go up there like this and then go over. Yeah, I finished with a figure eight and another variation would be to add So we go over like this again, come down and then add a heart flourish like this. Next is the letter B. Start over here, come down and over to the right with a big exit flourish. So instead of doing this big flourish here, you could also flourish more with this stroke. So sometimes it's easier. Two letter the skeleton off the letter first, and I think about how you could end how you could add another flourish So if you wanted to come from over here, would go down like this and then come up over here, then do something like this even. And with this one, it might even work if this was in the middle of a word. So, for example, if you had a t coming up next, you could just draw the Tien and this would be a natural T stroke. And another variation would be to bring this up and intertwined was the letter CIA. Start here, Go down and then, with a flourishing here, come back and then intertwine it like this. The letter C start over here. Down and up, over to the left. Come here. We could do a variation like this. Come up. Do a figure eight over to the left side. Come back, finish like this or a similar one where we take this back into the floor ish they come up, go over like this, and then come back into the center off the flourish with a little spiral. Next is in letter D, which I usually do with two strokes. Start over here and then coming from the left. Go down like this. Of course you could also start from the other side so you could do something like this instead of coming in here, You just start from here. In them add a flourish on this side that looks a little wonky. But Mori's, that's, um Yeah, just do another one. Okay, Lets try another one little similar like this with a different flourish. Okay, Something like this. And maybe another one. Similar to the first. We just add a little loop in here and then another one on this side. The letter E. Start over here. Oops. Come up. Go over and finish like this. Or it can do a similar one and add a heart flourish like this. And the last version would be to go just like here with the sea over to the left side again . OK, so let's try this up and over and at the heart flourish. I do this f with two strokes. Let me show you. Why do that Start here down finish here and then I add a line here like this. And then you can take this flourish further. Of course. So, yeah, like those and then Oh, I should have started like this you can head it later and then bring the flourish up here. Over here. Something like this. When you add elaborate flourishes like this, it's really important that the main down stroke off the letter is thicker than the flourishes. Otherwise, you have trouble. Um, reading which letter we're looking at. Okay, so let's try another one can do something like this, where you come in from the left and then loop through here the letter G heart floor ish, and then you can add a lot of floor ships down here like this loop 123 Come back in here and then move over like this. So this usually works well when you have letters before or after the G in a word, unless it's another letter where it comes below the baseline. And for, um, if the F g is at the end of the word, you could to have large like this, then come up and over like this. Next is the age start here, down and flourishing. Here, you can do similar one just in the other direction. So instead of going this way, you go that way. And then I had something in here a swell. Okay, so I just realized that the recording stopped and kind of in the middle. So I'll show you this one again. Fun under Frank piece of paper. Okay, so you'll start like this, come down at the flourish of the bottom, and then you can think about from which direction you want to come. And for the slope could do something like this or coming over from here. So in this case, I decided to come from this side, finished a flourish here, the loop here, I mean, and then go over and do something like this. Can it start the eye with a really simple one? Just a girl here. Oops. And then we could do are more complicated. One where you go up and over to the left to a figure eight. Come back, come back in here and then go parallel to this one and come back in. And the day just like the g IHS. One of my favorites to letter go down. I had a little hard forest here. Who's You can add more loops on the side, through here or at the end of the word. Come over here and go over the letter and include that the dot in the flourish next to the letter K. Start over here. Down. I had a loop here. You can also do the K like this and go through here where you can start like this again. Then make up your mind if you want to come in from the left side or from the left side or from the right side. So you could just something like this come down the letter l I do that also in two strokes , just like the f No. One. And then at this one over here, you can start with a simple line and then come over here. 10. lowercase m-z: the letter M start here. And this at the bottom. You can continue this one over here and even over the letter like this. Instead of bringing the flourish down, you could also bring it up and over like this. And also you could flourish this one more at the bottom like this. Go down in the new goals over here. So the end is similar to the M. We're here. Finish it like this. And then, just like the emu can also bring this one down. Comb over, back. Something like this. Or instead of going over to the left, you can go up into the other side like this, and over. Oh, starts here. Down. Stroll a little thinner down. Stroke over here for the figure eight, go back to the center of the flourish. Or you can go over to the other side at a loop and come back. Try a little more difficult one. Go up over over, and then go parallel again. Letter P straight down, over and to the left. And instead of going straight down, you can also go make a curve, not a flourish here, and then go up like this or make this one even longer. This and then, if you like, can add another one here. Next is the letter Q Start here. Go down straight. A little loop here. Them finish here. Go down, come out Instead of doing aloof, you can just do something. Us Go over to the other side. Yeah, The direction had something like this. Looks like 1/2 moon. Almost. And then, just like with the P, you could also go down. Instead of going down straight, you could make a little more curvy, more go down curve. And instead of going through here, you can come up this way. You know who the are stubborn, going up dumb, going over to the right, Adding heart shaped flourish like this. Or we could take it to the to the left side like this at a spiral in the end, instead of going down straight like here, you could also at a loop in here and then continue like this letter s up here. Down. Yeah, over this. Or it can bring the no over like this within the s like here, where you can make a different s, make this one and echo the slope in here, the T stroke down and then flourished the T stroke. So with the tea, it's often possible to drag the flourish of another letter back or forth to finish the tea stroke. You have the word tea. He could bring the flourish here back, do you down, down and at the floor, ocean here. Or bring it over to the left side and a spiral, or bring it over to the left side and make it even bigger. Flourish like this Next up is to be like this over, uh, hopes that was a little wonky. Okay, so let's try again. And instead of going down like this, you can add a loop like so and then continue being like That's or you can go the other direction and bring the flourish over the W over here, tiny little loop. Instead of doing this round, you can off course also write it like this, or you can make the the loop here more pronounced like big add. A floor ish was in the loo for the X I used to stroke, So start here number one and then go up like this, just like with the upper case X. You can also do something like this and then echo the side of the other like this and add even more flourishes this tiny little one. The Why Teoh on Joan in the heart flourish through here. Notice how I lifted off my hand in order to to make this flourish here. So like this And then you lifted off and give it Canada. Um, kind of a swing And you could also had more flourishes here, Just like with G, for example, or bring everything back up and over And the Z I was kind of similar to flourish because it also get it also goes down like this so you could go down and had more flourishes here. I've also seen the Z. I don't like this with a little stroke in the middle, but I think this leaves more options for flourishes. Then you could even and something in here 11. Ligatures: I've prepared another worksheet for you with certain legal agents that occur quite often in the English language. Let's start with the TH instead of adding the T stroke here and the loop for the age separately, you can go through with one stroke, and then you can be more fancy and add flourish here and another one on the right. Or you can start further out to the left and, uh, being stroked down and connect toothy age. This is another example for T age ligature. I recommend starting here and adding a line here. Another variation would be to add a loop here and then return at a loop here and then return to the center like this. Next is T T, where you can connect like this or try this and then go through and add the flourishing the end. Or you can take, um, or he can take the flourish up and over, back over the letters does easy. Start with the 1st 1 little loop and then go and directly over to the second see over to the right and its little spiral. For the next one, you can add a little loop here and here, Go back over and finish like this. A nice way to connect two peas. And instead of going down straight, you make a curve like this, then finished the first p and then for the 2nd 1 go down straight and come on over. And for the second example, first pee on the second and then you can flourish around, see why is similar to the ZZ ligature. Start with Z and go into the UAE directly and heart flourish and no loop here and over. I start the k l here down, up, um, and then connect from out here over to the l. This would also work for a K and T connection, so t and then this would be the tee stroke. And also for okay and h connection here, down and spiral for two l's again. You start in the middle down and then connect the second l And just as with the example over here, this would also work for and l and T connection, or for on l and Age or Ellen be connection. So also for an Ellen Age and L B connection to efs, he started first f over here, down and then come over to the second half like this. And then also that would work for ah f and T connection. Oh, here, T stroke. And then also, with all the other letters I've mentioned before, B and age would also work. Come over here and into twine for the l d. Start the l here, then the d and then finished the d like this. You can also connect. Al was a t T stroke for the l f ligature restored here down and then come back over to the left side. Continue like this and into the f. And again, this also works for L b l h. Lt for the last ligature. Why, G you start with the Wyke of Down loop and then stop here. Continue with the G down Lou, and then try to connect both in here smoothly, K one more time. Start with the why go down and stop here. The G go down loop and connect here 12. Word practice: in the next lesson, I'm going to show you my way off flourishing words. So what I usually do is I look at the word that I want to let her. So in this case, Aloha, I write out the word in capital letters and then I think about where I could add flourishes . So in this case, who will be around the A and then also the last letter off the word. The other example would be the word birthday. I have write it out first, and then I think about where I could possibly add some flourishes. What I also usually recommend is that before you flourished the word you can do some nails . So what it basically means is that you can draw tiny little cubes like these and then with a pencil, just try out different ways. You could letter and flourished the word. I'm gonna do this with a pen so you can see it better. And just try and see where you could add the flourishes in which one you like best. Just try out different things. And once you've come closer to what you like, you can try out more, and I'm only drawing these because I think it's fun. But you, of course, you don't have to Joe squares like that at all. You can just take a piece of paper and do your try Audio thumbnails like this. So I like the capital letter better with the Aloha, and this is what I'll go with. So not really fund off this Lloris sh So I'll try something else a little bigger and like this. And I like this one better because this flourish, it goes this one down here. Okay, so let's look at some other words together. Let's look at the word princess. So I'm gonna write it out first. Usually a very good place to flourish is at the beginning of the word in the end of the word. So I will put the flourishing here and in here. And for some balance, I would also like a flourish in the middle of the word. So it's say around this letter in. And then I usually try to include the dot of the I in the flourish as well. So let's try out some some years. Let's try and right the the word out first with my normal hand lettering. No flourishes yet. Okay, So I can see here. I could definitely put off large and here like this, and then another one at the end of the word. And then instead of coming up here, I could add a florist stone here instead of going now straight here, I might also do a different canopy that goes in a curve. Mm. See, bring this down like this. And then because there's so much going on down here, I would like to, for some balance, bring up this flourish up here. And then I could also include the iDot. What about writing the word with a Capital P instead of a small, lower case? Okay, let me turn the paper a little bit and a flourish here at the beginning. And then the other one this and then at the end of the word like this. So I'm not really fund of this curve here. So I think instead of this, I would try something like like this. So let's write it out one more time. Oh, and by the way, I'm only writing this with a pen so you can see it better. But I would recommend that you do this part? The step of the process with a pencil. Okay. Yeah, something like this. And then for some balance, you could even add an additional flourish here. So this is not directly connected to any of the letters? I just added it. So the whole thing is, um, fits more into the the oval shape. Once you're happy with your draft, you can take a new piece of paper and literate. It's Let's look at the word birthday. Next. Write it out first. There are a lot of possibilities to flourish. So beginning of the word end of the word include the daughter of the I. Then the R is really nice to flourish. You can connect the teeth with the age to a ligature here and then flourished the D as well the D stroke. Okay, so to our little some new windows again, let's letter it out first. And as you can see here, I'm not adding the t stroke yet because I know that I want to do something with it later. The same with the d. I'm not adding the loop yet because I'm gonna flourish it later. And also in here. I don't finish the loop because I'm gonna think about how to add a flourish with us later. So the beginning of the word we could add a flourishing here could, for example, just start more to the left at a little loop here, then connect the T and the age like this automatically included the dot of the I in here. And then we could flourished d like this. Come over this right first imbalance instead of bringing the are off leg here, you could go down like this. Okay, let's try one more time. And that's tried to incorporate those flourishes already. Okay, we bring the are down the t connect that I was the T stroke and the age. Mm. Um, maybe like this and then finish like this. So this is a little out of place in here? I think so. Maybe instead of having this like here, we could bring it over here and then come back to the middle. All right, let's try one more time, bring the are down to here and then stopped for the moment. Finish the rest of the work. First flourish here. Okay, then. So think this little more in the middle. So Okay, then take a new piece of paper and try to ride it out. Are do this for later. T go over here, connect the tea with the age and D instead of bringing it all the way from here, he could also connected with the H like this you like in them. Okay. And now we can add that are flourish. Okay, So as you can see here, it is actually visible that I finished the flourish later. So it depends. What can a pen you use? Mm. If you don't want to go back in and work on every down stroke again, I would recommend finishing the flourish just as you go. And if you, um, come back and and work on every letter again, then it's also possible to at the flourish a little later. Because then you can You can work this out. The next word we're gonna look at is the name James. So, as with all the others, a good spot to flourish is beginning the end of the word. And then the J is beautiful to flourish all across. The word is we're outside. Make a little note here or If you don't want to do this, you could also choose the letter in the middle. Or maybe you could even combine these two flourishes. Okay, let's see. So I write it out. I have write it out first. Then I had a little flourish here. We could come in like this. So I think instead of doing this, I would like to try to add of nourish down here. And because there is no other letter with a dissenter that goes down below the baseline, you can do a really big flourish here and put all the other letters on top. Okay, let's try to echo this large here. Like this. Maybe that's a little too big. Kind of takes away from the word. Okay, lets try. Mm. Let's try something else. Okay? So this lawyer is a little more over, and now all the weight is at the end of the word here. So I would try and go in and create something in here. Maybe even instead of using a lower case, J. I wanna going with a capital letter. Okay, So see how that looks. Maybe I would even leave this one out and just go into the name directly like this. Do something like this. Yeah. I think I like this version the best. But it really it really depends. What? What do you prefer? There is no right or wrong there. Just recommendations. I have according to balance when you look at the whole word. But in the end, you should just choose which words in you like the best. Let's get some paper. I'll write the word again. 13. Quote practice: Let's start with a short quote, Onley. Three words. Every moment matters. I usually start by writing the quote out like this and then deciding whether I want the quote to be in one line, like here or possibly written out like this with the words on top of each other. I think I like this version better. Next, I will think about where to add the flourishes. That would be a the beginning and at the end of the words, because I have a T here in the word movement, I will combine one of the flourishes from up here with that T stroke. The Why and the tea would make a good combo. Uh, and over here, instead of bringing the flourish up from the letter M, I could also flourish it down over here and justice with the word practice and the lesson before I will start with a couple of thumbnails to try out different ideas. I would usually make my drafts with a pencil, but I'll use a pin here so you can see it better. I recommend writing out the quote in hand, lettering first and leaving out the loop here so that you getting connected later. Whoops. That's supposed to be an owner. Tony and I can already see the good connection possibility here between the why and the tea . And then the third word matters usually here with those two teas. That would be a good opportunity as well to connect flourishes to the other words. But I think I'll leave this one for no gonna try and create a frame of flourishes all around the quote because it's so short and it already has a round shape to it. So I placed the flourishes at the beginning and the end of every word that start with this one. I think I'm gonna bring this flourish up and then bring this one up from the M like so. And instead of bringing this up from here, I will fill the white space down below, like this and and then up from the s. Okay, so I don't really like the shape here. I'll change a leader. Now that I know that I wanna bring this flourish up, I'm gonna start like this, continue into I m and then connect the why, Lou, with the t stroke and bring it all up around and here. I'm not really happy with this loop here because it kind of looks like an e. So I'll try and loop around like this instead. And I forgot. Okay. Um well, I wanted to flourish down from the M and then bring it up like here. Please make as many thumbnails as you want until you have a draft that you're happy with. Choose the one you like best grab a new piece of paper, and I'll start withdrawing a light circle with pencil. So I know where to place the words approximately. Draw some lines here, and then I'll start writing it out. - Oh , I can't believe this. I will. I forgot again that I wanted to bring that flourished down. So in that case, you can just add a standalone flourish like this instead of connecting it directly to a letter. Okay. And, well, yeah, that kind of thing happens to you. This is how you groups. Um, okay. And the little mishap here. So, as you can see, even if you plan out things that they might go wrong. But then usually you can do something to save the peace. Just like I tried here. Okay, let's look at another quote. Live and let live. So I can already see that I wanna exchange the word and with the ampersand. And then we also have three ales in here. I'm sure I can work something out with those. Okay, let's start with the thumbnails again. So I write the words out one more time, but at n percent here on the right side. And then I'll think about where I wanna place the flourishes. And just as before, Ah, place, um, in the beginning and at the end of the word and possibly I'll be able to combine those with the n percent somehow. Okay. So I think I'm gonna try and get all these Els into one stroke like this. It might look a little weird, but I kind of like it, so I'll go with that for the moment. I leave that t stroke for now. Okay. I think I'll just go with a simple T stroke for this one. And looking at this, it cannot like it without too many flourishes. So I think I'm not gonna put a floor is over here. I think the emphasis should be on those three L's and I think I'm good with that. So let's try and ride it out on a bigger piece of paper. 14. Thank you!: Thank you so much for taking my class. I hope you enjoyed it for the class project. I like you too. True. The word. And letter it in three different ways. Or choose a short quote and letter it in two different ways. I don't know.
