Fancy Flourishes! Embellish your handlettering step by step

1. Welcome to Fancy Flourishes!: Hi, I'm Keiko. In this class, I'll show you how to embellish your hand lettering with beautiful flourishes. Flourishes can be intimidating, but I'll walk you through the basics of flourishing and show you step by step, how and where to flourish and also we're not. We'll start with fun. Warm up exercises flourish our way through the lower and upper case alphabet. Embellish a few words, and in the end we'll design a short quote. There are some rules to flourishing, but there's also a lot of freedom, and basically the sky's the limit, and I want you to experiment and have fun. I'm providing you with a big bundle of printable worksheets for the complete lower and uppercase alphabet and T cheats for different floors shapes. If you don't have a printer, you can follow this class with just a pen, pencil and any paper you have a hand. Are you ready for fancy flourishes? Okay, let's jump right in 2. Flourish in the Air: you can literally flourish anywhere and everywhere, and you don't even need a pen to practice. There are almost no limits and no excuses not to practice. Warm up with writing a few words in the air, get up from your chair and move that arm around. Have you ever tried writing with two pins, if not tried? Now just pick up two pens and wrap a rubber band around them. Draw some shapes, lift your hand and your arm and move your whole shoulder. Draw a figure eight shape over and over, tell your shoulder feels relaxed. 3. Basic shapes: cannot start with some basic floor shapes to warm up, and also, when you have practiced these enough, you can basically create any sort of flourish based on these on these shapes. So let's start with the loop, or you can do this with a cancel or with the brush pins. Okay, start with this loop and just continue. It's always a good idea to practice every flourish in every shape in the opposite direction . So you train your muscle memory not only to one side, also to the other one. Next up is the spiral. So this is a really good practice for warming up before you start lettering and feel free to do this as much as you like. And at last, the figure. Eight. Um, just basically two loops connected, and for this one, it's it's good when you lift your hand off the paper and try to do it in one smooth scoop in the beginning, it's okay if those sides are not the same size. So I think it's more important that you try and loosen up your hand, get your hand off the paper, and then also from the other side. Opposite direction, which is more difficult for me, as you can see if you like. You can use this practice sheet also to practice some variations off these shapes down here . You can, of course, and more hoops. If you do something like this, the more you practice thes basic shapes, the easier it's going to be for you later to create smooth flourishes. 4. Favorite flourishes: before we start flourishing away through the whole alphabet. Let me show you a few of my favorite flourishes for exit strokes. So the end of the word is usually a very good spot to place of flourish, and I have a few that I use all the time. It's a good idea to create a cheat sheet with flourishes and also to create new ones every now and then, so that you don't end up making the same floor shows over and over again. OK, so this is probably the flourish I do the most. Just going up over figure eight flourish like this, and then this is basically a variation of that one. So you go up over and then add what I call a heart shaped flourish here. And then this is what I usually call my pretzel flourish, because it kind of looks like a pretzel a little bit, works with a lot of letters and also in the other direction. So this one came over to the left side, and this one goes in the opposite direction. This is the typical figure. Eight flourish, and then the last one is little more difficult. It's based on the figure eight floors and it adds one more stroke here, Uh, come back and then go in a parallel line here. So I left him space for your guys down here. You can either copy the flourishes from appear. And of course, you can add your own spin to throw. And as you can see, it's really they're really all just variations off the basic flora shapes that we looked at before. What makes a good flourish? 5 tips: Let's start with the word Aloha. Notice how I lift off my hand and move my whole arm while I'm doing the flourish. Okay, so the first rule is to base all of your flourishes off often oval shape. This is an oval shape, and here's another one, and the whole flourish is an oval shape as well. Same over here, oval shape, over shape and the whole flourish as well. This doesn't mean that you flourishes can't be round, and in some cases it might look really good. But I personally prefer my flourishes to be oval tip number two cross the lines at a 90 degree angle. So, for example, there's a 90 degree angle here and over here, here and here. And this is almost a 90 degree angle over here and here and here. Not exactly 90 degrees. But I try to stay as close as possible to a 90 degree angle because it's considered toe look more pleasing to the eye. But again, this is just the tip doesn't mean that all your flourishes have to be in a 90 degree angle with this. A. These lines on top here are clearly not in a 90 degree angle. But if you like this kind of angle, that's totally fine. I personally prefer the 90 degree angles. Tip number three across thin and thing, and thick and thin lines don't cross thick lines and this example here I'm crossing too thick lines on top of the A, and this takes away from the eligibility of the A puts too much emphasis on the flourish. Instead, try to guide your flourish in a way that avoids crossing too thick lines. Okay, let's look at the capital letter a large through here. As you can see, I've crossed a thin line with a thick line and then thin, thin, thick line and thin line again and thin lines. Tip number four. Put less weight on the floor ish than on the letter. That's right, the word high and flourish over here. As you can see, this is the weight of the down stroke and another one here and in comparison, the flourishes a lot thinner. Then the down strokes. Here, let's go back to the capital letter a down, stroke down stroke and see here the weight off the flourishes a lot thinner than my thick down stroke tip number five. Avoid so called hot spots. This is when multiple lines cross in one spot. Okay, it's write the letter A. And then here I'm crossing multiple lines in this one spot. It confuses three I because it tries to follow one line and it diverges into too many directions and the flourish gets too crowded. So try and loosen up the flourish like here and cross Onley two lines. Let's do a quick recap. Number one Oval shapes as in here and in here. Number two. Cross your lines at a 90 degree angle or as close as possible to a 90 degree angle. As in here, Number three Cross Onley thin and thick lines is in here, or thin and thin lines as in here. Number four. The weight. The flourish should be less than the weight off the letters. As you can see here, the weight of my flourishes are less than the weight of all the down strokes on the letters . Number five. Try to avoid hot spots where multiple lines cross in the same spot. Try to cross on Lee two lines and is a last tip. Look at the whole word and see how the flourishes balance in relation to the word. Is there some empty white space that needs to be filled, or does everything look nice and balanced? 6. Now, where to put that flourish?: Let's look at places that work best for adding flourishes Number one at the beginning or at the end of the word, Let's take the word love and add a flourish at the beginning and at the end. So I'll start with the capital L, out of Flores here at the bottom, and then I'll try an echo it with this flourish at the end to create a balance and to fill the white space evenly. Number two underneath or around a word or a quote. Let's look at the ward dream, so I'll write it out first in capital letters, and now you could make a flourish under the word or around the word. Let's try under the word first flourish here and then right out the word and starting from the last letter here, I take the floors all the way down like this. I'm not really liking that empty white space over here too much, so let's try something else. I will try and put a flourish all around the word I write the word again, and then, starting from the last letter, I go all around the word in a cloud shaped, which also fits the meaning of the word quite nicely. Notice how different the words look with these two different flourishes. The hand lettering is almost the same, but the flourish make them look pretty different. There are endless possibilities to change the look of a word just by changing the flourishes. Number three, a central letter or a letter of a word. It might not always be possible to do that, but let's have a look at a word where it's possible that shows a word prince and writing it out. First a star with a P and then add the flourish here with the end. I could take the this flourish over here and connected to the dot of the I. Now let's look at the end flourish. Even though it's quite Bagan comes all the way down. It's still possible to read it as the letter M. Sometimes this might not be the case. There are some letters that I wouldn't let her from, and I'll show you in a minute. What? I mean, the next word is aunt again. The central letter is an in, and we also have the N T connection. And the word C could easily be mistaken for the word spa. The next letter his I as in the word rich flourish from the I, which makes it appear almost like a J. Of course, you might still be able to read the word correctly, but it would be easier to flourish from the first or the last letter here from the R th The next letter is the L as a cliff. Now, when I put a flourish here on the l starts looking like an f pretty much various similar to the other efs in the word the last letter is to you, as in fun and the flourish here looks like a why. So these are the letters that I don't recommend for flourishing when there are in the center of the word. You can't, of course, letter from them when they are at the end of the word or at the beginning, off the word. 7. Uppercase A-L: Let's start with the upper case Alphabet. I'm working with brush pin. But if you don't feel comfortable working with a brush, Ben, please feel free to use a pencil. I will show you how I am. Let earthy examples here on the worksheet, and then I will show you a couple other variations you could do with each letter. As you can see here, I also added numbers and arrows to indicate the direction of the stroke. In this case, I start the letter A on the left side. Go down like this, loop around, add a heart shaped nourish, and for the second stroke, I start on the left side. Here, swoop over and add a loop on top. And then also add the loop here. If you don't like the loop, flourish on top. You can also simplify the letter instead of coming this way with a loop, you can just come straight down from here, like so, and then finish with a loop like this. And there's also a different way to write the letter A. So you start here and come up like this thick down stroke and then loop over to the left side. like this. And then, of course, you can add another little one here. I hope I'm not doing this too fast for you guys. If you want to see what I did here one more time, you can go back and watch it one more time. But a lot of the flourishes are gonna be repeated. So this low here with the A, it's gonna be similar to the one here with the B. And if you continue watching and writing along with me, you'll see that you'll get the hang of flourishes very soon because you will repeat similar shapes over and over again. For the B, go down like this, make a double loop flourish for the second stroke. We start here and intertwined these two flourishes. Add a little one and except like this, Instead of putting the emphasis on this stroke, you can add more loops on top, make a simple loop here, and then you can come in like this at a little heart shaped flourish. Or you can make more loops down here like this one too three and finish a little more simple like this, or you can write the B in a completely different way like this and finish like this. I personally really like this type of bi, but some of you might prefer the other one. It's up to you. The letter C is just one stroke like this. And here it's important that you emphasize the down stroke when you use a brush been and go a little lighter on the flourishes. So the legibility of the sea is still there. If you add a little loop, flourish like this, just make sure the main down stroke is the thickest of them all like this. And for this one, you can do a little variation on the bottom and on the top, so on the top like this, and then add Ah, figure eight at the bottom. The de is also one stroke. You start here with the down stroke and go over and flourished the exit stroke like this and you can also bring the exit stroke over to the other side of the letter. With a big loop, you can extend the flourish to the left side whenever you added to the beginning of a word . Another variation for the letter e would be to change up the bottom, flourish a little bit, start here and at a little loop here and bring the flourish down below the letter like this . And then you would continue writing over here. The letter f I make this with three strokes here, so 12 appear in them. Three. So start with number one and add to loop flourishes here, then intertwined the top, flourish here like so and then finish with the third stroke. You can put more emphasis. Um, the bottom Florence. Now, depending on which letter comes next in the word, you could also bring the floors over to the side like so. So flourish here and then go through over here and and the flourish like this. So, as I said, it depends a little bit on which letter comes next. This would work great for letters like a or I even, um h or any letter that does not go beyond this line. Because, for example, if you have, ah, a letter like a Why, like this? It might get confusing because you have to go down like this. So these kind of flourishes that go into the rest of the word work Well, if you have letters that stay above the baseline, you can let her the age with two strokes or with just one stroke. Let's start with this two stroke version here. Okay, So start here. Go over there one loop, second loop, and then started the second stroke here of the bottom and finish over there instead of starting the second stroke here at the bottom. This is a pretty simple version, and as a variation you can add some more flourishes over here. And you can also start or more on the left side like here and add one, two loops here. Another variation is to add more flourishes here from top. Make sure you don't go below the baseline so it doesn't end up looking like a J. Then one more at a tiny little loop Here, go down. Finish like this. I start the letter J just like I started the letter. I but go down below the baseline and at a little heart flourish and cross over. You can do a very Asian with the bottom flourish. Start here, go down and then loop three times, and then you can either finish here or go through like this. You can also make it a little more simple and finish it like this. And another variation would be the little pretzel or figure eight on the bottom. So, as you can see here, um, I created a little hot spot where all my lines meet in one spot. So to remedy that, try one more time. Go down, do the figure eight and go through here. The letter K has two strokes and you start over here and at two groups on the left. Move over here and then finish it like this. And then basically, you can add more flourishes at all corners here so you can start like us, go down and then intertwine blues like here and then coming with a spiral and finish it with a little pretzel down here. And another variation would be to start this. And then instead of coming in from the right side, you come in from over and left and then continue like this for the l start here down. This would be the simple version with a new been here. And then, of course, you could do something like this. You could also start on the left side, make this make a nice little online. And there it go. This with a long line at the bottom or he could You had a little punishing here, Chris. And then another one here 8. Uppercase M-Z: the letter M is made up off two strokes and the 1st 1 The first part of the letter resembles an end. Over here, the O is one stroke that is very close to one of the basic strokes. The spiral. Add a tiny little hope and finish. For this variation, you can start the the top stroke in a different way like this. Add a little loop and then bring it over to finish. There is also a totally different version off the P, where you go down straight over and finish like this. I make this queue with one stroke, start with a spiral, then finish like this. You could also make it a little simpler, and it almost looks like the number two, or you could make it look a little more like the over here, start like this. And then you go back in at a loop and then out like this. The letter R is with two strokes. Start over here. And Luke, the second stroke, Tiny little Lou and then finished. You are like this. Now we can add more flourishes on this side. One, two in, three out and then, like those for the third example, can add a flourish here. So and as you can see, I started with the second stroke first, which I normally don't do. But in this case, I thought it was a little easier for the S. You start here at the baseline, go up, down and through like those. Or instead of starting here, you can start more on the upper left and then loop through. A different variation would be this s curve and finish with a double loop. You can add more flourishes at the bottom over here and then also here on the top. Another variation would be something like this. And also here on top. The letter you is one stroke dumb down again and a big loop at the bottom. You can add a more intricate flourish here in the end, down and up, and then go the other way like this go out like so. And last but not least, is the letter Z one stroke, Lou. Down, up, you can do a variation at the top like this goes down straighter and add more loops at the bottom. There is also another version of the sea like this. Go down straight diagonal and then a stroke through. I prefer the first version, and I really like the round shapes here 9. lowercase a-l: next walk you through the lower case alphabet. If you need some inspiration for flourishes, you can always refer to this to cheat flourishes for exit strokes. And of course, you can always come up with your own flourishes as well. Let's start with the letter A hes down here, up, down, and then come over here to the left, a little loop and finish. So instead of going over to the left side like this, you can also reverse directions. You start the A just like the other one. But then, instead of coming up here, you go up there like this and then go over. Yeah, I finished with a figure eight and another variation would be to add So we go over like this again, come down and then add a heart flourish like this. Next is the letter B. Start over here, come down and over to the right with a big exit flourish. So instead of doing this big flourish here, you could also flourish more with this stroke. So sometimes it's easier. Two letter the skeleton off the letter first, and I think about how you could end how you could add another flourish So if you wanted to come from over here, would go down like this and then come up over here, then do something like this even. And with this one, it might even work if this was in the middle of a word. So, for example, if you had a t coming up next, you could just draw the Tien and this would be a natural T stroke. Something like this. When you add elaborate flourishes like this, it's really important that the main down stroke off the letter is thicker than the flourishes. Otherwise, you have trouble. Okay, so you'll start like this, come down at the flourish of the bottom, and then you can think about from which direction you want to come. And for the slope could do something like this or coming over from here. Ligatures: I've prepared another worksheet for you with certain legal agents that occur quite often in the English language. Let's start with the TH instead of adding the T stroke here and the loop for the age separately, you can go through with one stroke, and then you can be more fancy and add flourish here and another one on the right. Another variation would be to add a loop here and then return at a loop here and then return to the center like this. Next is T T, where you can connect like this or try this and then go through and add the flourishing the end. Or you can take, um, or he can take the flourish up and over, back over the letters does easy. Start with the 1st 1 little loop and then go and directly over to the second see over to the right and its little spiral. You can just take a piece of paper and do your try Audio thumbnails like this. So I like the capital letter better with the Aloha, and this is what I'll go with. I think I like this version the best. But it really it really depends. What? What do you prefer? There is no right or wrong there. Just recommendations. I have according to balance when you look at the whole word. But in the end, you should just choose which words in you like the best. Let's get some paper. I'll write the word again. 13. Quote practice: Let's start with a short quote, Onley. Three words. Every moment matters. I usually start by writing the quote out like this and then deciding whether I want the quote to be in one line, like here or possibly written out like this with the words on top of each other. I think I like this version better. Next, I will think about where to add the flourishes. That would be a the beginning and at the end of the words, because I have a T here in the word movement, I will combine one of the flourishes from up here with that T stroke. The Why and the tea would make a good combo. Uh, and over here, instead of bringing the flourish up from the letter M, I could also flourish it down over here and justice with the word practice and the lesson before I will start with a couple of thumbnails to try out different ideas. I would usually make my drafts with a pencil, but I'll use a pin here so you can see it better.
