1. Introduction: Wait a minute. I thought essays were
only for middle school, high schoolers and
people in college. Can people really use
essays? In the real-world? Of course, it doesn't
matter if you're an entrepreneur or if you're working in the corporate space, either or the ability to
articulate your ideas. And then essay
form allows others to know where you stand
on certain issues. My name is Ahmad Shah Audrey, the founder of Romani talks, a media company which
helps engineers and entrepreneurs improve their
communication skills. One of the ways that I've
been relying my ideas with the Morning Talks brand
is through blogs. Blogs are, blogs are
pretty much essays. And once you keep on
consistently writing, eventually you
start to build what I call an idea portfolio. All these people nowadays talk
about generational wealth. The wealth that you could pass down generation by generation. But how many people talk
about generational ideas? The type of ideas that you could pass down to your future. Great, great, great grandkids. That's the power of essays. In this beginner's class, I'm going to be teaching you a dummy's version
of writing essays. Fast. Time is money. And we wanted
to make sure we're not wasting our time on
majoring in the minor. In this class, you're going to understand what our essays, what separates essays
from short stories. You're going to understand a simple framework to
get started today. Finally, I'm going to give you a class project
which will help you write essays with ease out
forward to seeing you inside.
2. What is an Essay?: Essay is a logical
explanation of something. What is that something?
Well, that's going to depend upon you. What is it that you're normally
trying to speak about? You? Someone who
discusses sports, someone who teaches public
speaking to entrepreneurs. Are you someone who is
talking about why coding is just as important as
learning the English language. Whatever it is, just
understand that you are aiming to make a
logical case for it. Now what is the logic? I'm sure you heard a lot of different definitions
in regards to it. Most of these definitions
have been a tad bit scary. Let me dump it down. Logic pretty much comes
down to because of this, this happened, because of this, this happened because of this. This happened through
this little sequence. We're able to create complexity. Let me give you an example. Let's say there's a guy named Jonathan that stole from
a girl named Catherine. You at this point are
serving as the detective. You're going to be
getting a whole bunch of information regarding
what has happened. Then you are going to create
an essay on the matter. As you are picking in all the information you stunned to see what
you are witnessing. The reason that
Jonathan stole from Catherine is because at first, Catherine stole from Jonathan. Once catherine stole
Jonathan's shoes, Jonathan felt that it will be
right to take his material back and do to him taking
his material back. He did not steal, he just took claim of
his own possessions. This was a mini sample
essay using logic. This understand that logic
works and sequences. And the basic way
to understand logic is because of this,
this happened.
3. Essay vs Short Story: If you pick about it, an essay is rather like a short story. Because whenever you're thinking
of a story, what is it? It's pretty much a sequence of, because of this, this happened, because of this, this happened. Little Red Riding Hood went to the forest and the
big bad wolf founder. And this is how most
short shorts are created. But the main difference
between an essay and a short story is
that essays please, more importance on the logic. Or short stories place more
importance on the narrative. And that's about it. So every now and then, when you're creating an essay, you may find yourself bordering the line of
telling a story as well. Is this wrong? Or is this
something that is strategic? There's something
that I'm going to be bringing up in the next video.
4. Edutainment: I think all too
often people want to choose sides a little too much. The reason that it's
not smart to choose sides is because lot of times the different sites that we're choosing is much better if
these two sides work together. And it's the same thing with
essays and short stories. It's much better at these
two different spheres work together. This is what creates edutainment
stands for education. And education is predominantly
done through logic. Attainment pretty much
exemplifies entertainment. And entertainment is
done through stories. If you can combine education
with entertainment, then you are
officially combining essays with short stories. Now as you're doing that, you'll notice that
the case that you are making for whatever
you're trying to explain in regards
to your field, source of pickup more power. Too many times, whenever
someone is writing an essay, they sound a type of robotic. Even though the Robotic is technically satisfying
the logic formula. They're not necessarily
factoring in the winter too much because the reader does not
only want raw intellect, instead, the reader
wants an experience. They want to feel a tablet
and retained at times. If you're a phony writer, then you use that humor. That humor allows you to
still implement education. But now we're also implementing entertainment
into the mix. My personal philosophy
is that essays and short stories are not meant to be pinned
against each other. Instead, they are meant to
complement one another.
5. Why write essays fast: Why write essays fast? Not take your time. Because if you're watching this beginner's class right now, I'm sure you've had that
thought in your mind where you wanted to
write more essays. However, there's 1 where you're feeling a lot
of analysis paralysis. Due to the analysis paralysis, you were feeling tension. You are connecting that tension with the act of writing essays. Whenever you're
focusing too much on the tension in regards
to a creative work, what you're doing is you're
majoring in the minors. I guarantee you a person who is overthinking writing essays, they're focused a
little too much on the grammar, punctuation,
and spelling. These three should be the last of your worries.
At this point. Your number one goal for
writing essays is to get the idea or ideas from
your mind onto paper. The more tension that
you're introducing, the more likely that you
are straying away from this one simple goal
idea from mine to paper. Therefore, we want to
bulldoze through this. We want to bold those
through the tension. The way that we're
going to do that is by writing our essays fast. We want to predominantly
started off writing about stuff
that we know about, rather than creating
fictional characters that requires us to
think a tiny bit more. Let's start off with
something that we already know about and train ourselves to get our idea from
the mind onto paper. And in the next video, I'm going to give you a
trick on how to do that.
6. Napkin Trick: This point, what we're gonna
do is we're going to grab a napkin and we're going to
crumple it up just a tad bit. And then we're going to create our outline for
the essay on this. Now a few things you
may be wondering. First of all, why am
I choosing a napkin? Second of all, why am
I crippling? Get up? Why don't I just use a notepad? I have plenty of those. Here's the reason why. The reason why you don't
want to use a notepad, especially if you're thinking about writing an essay fast, is because notepad is
a tad bit too formal. And whenever you're
dealing with formalities, what happens is that your
logical brain gets activated a tad bit more and you start
to overthink a tad bit more. Therefore, we're bypassing
this extra logic with creativity using
something more informal. We're picking a napkin and more specifically for crumbling the napkin up in order to
further show the formalities. Now here's the trick.
Let's say you want to write this essay
very, very fast. That means that your outline
needs to be done quick. The more time that you take, the more that you
filter yourself. For you to make it even quicker, you can try to fold the napkin
and create your outline on this much space rather
than this much space. By the way, creating an outline doesn't have to
be the end-all, be-all. You're pretty much
trying to do is create the skeleton
of your essay. The more debt you
have the skeleton, the more debt you
have the EDU part of edutainment,
which is the logic. Once you have the skeleton
and it seems strong, it becomes much easier to add in the pavement, the entertainment. You'll notice that your
personality source of flow, the more that you
understand the material. Grab a napkin, crumple it up and create your
outline on this.
7. What to Write About: Now you may be wondering,
what do I talk about? I have this crumpled up napkin in front of me
and have nothing to say. Let's keep it even simpler. As far we've been following a
theme, Let's keep it going. The simplicity comes down to
two of the following topics. Write about something you
know very, very well, or write about something
that you want to see to give you an example. Something you know very,
very well yourself. Maybe you want to talk about
the logical reason as to why you chose the major
that you chose in college. Let's say something
that you want to see. While you were in college. You hated exams, everything
else you are good in. But whenever it came to exams, something about it made
you feel uncomfortable. And you want to make a
logical case as to why colleges should remove exams
from their curriculum. That's something else that
you can write your essay on. For one of them is something
that you know very well, your major and for the other topic is something
that you want to see done. Either one of these boats, it becomes easier to start learning the whole
process of outlining. Once you can outline, That's when it becomes
much easier to write. Essays. Start off with
something that you know or something
that you want to see.
8. Practice Makes Progress: Once you have your
outline on the napkin, that's when you start to
get the outline and you start to bring it to
life in essay format. As you're getting started, I recommend that most
of your essays are roughly around 500
words to 1000 words. And if these numbers seem a
little too scary for you, you can even make it less. But I will caution you though. Trying to write in less words
is a pretty advanced move. Even people that have been
writing essays for a long, long time, they can't even get their essays to less words. If you're capable of doing that. Congratulations. But
for the most part, I recommend doing 500
words to 1 thousand words. And keep practicing. Keep writing more
and more and more. Keep making logical explanations for whatever point
that you want to make. As you're making these
logical explanations, every now and then, sprinkle your personality
into it as well. The more debt you sprinkle
your personality into it, the less it's going to feel like you're actually writing essays. Instead. It's just going to feel like
you're talking better yet, you're typing with
your personality while using logic along the way. Since writing essays is
a pretty creative task. Each time that you are complete, each time you're gonna feel
like I could have added this, this, and this point. And I could've made
my voice a little bit funnier on this, this, and this point. Feeling dissatisfaction. Novice artist hates
dissatisfaction. They feel like they
did something wrong. A great artist uses the satisfaction for
their next content piece. I know that you are
meant to be great. So keep on creating
your outlines, keep on bringing the
essays to life and keep on using that dissatisfaction
for future essays to be.
9. Recap: The Xue quick little recap of
everything that we covered. An essay is a logical
explanation of an idea. The reason that an essay is different from a short story is because an essay predominantly
focuses on the logic. While a short story predominantly focuses
on the narrative. But we're not the type of people that are going to
be comparing the two. Instead, the type of people that are going to be
combining the two. And this is known
as edutainment. When education, the logic of essays meets the entertainment, the narrative of short stories. The way that we're
going to get better is through practicing. The way that we're
going to practice is by grabbing a napkin, crumpling it up in order to engage the informal
sides of the brain. And we're going
to quickly create an outline regarding
a topic that we already know or something that
we want to see in reality. And we are going to create
the skeleton on this napkin. Over time. What we're
gonna do is we're going to bring the skeleton to life
on a Microsoft document. And we're going to
keep on practicing by writing more and more essays. There is no set formula. This is something that is a creative process
that you are going to create over time
by using your voice. Just a quick little disclaimer. Any field that has creativity involved in it will lead
to dissatisfaction. Novice writer of essays is going to feel bummed out
by the dissatisfaction. While a probe is going to
use the dissatisfaction to become more prolific
and create more essays.
10. Final Project: For the final project
that we're gonna be using the napkin
trick for ourselves. I want you to find a napkin. I want you to crumble it up. And I want you to create an outline of a topic
that you know very well. It could be about yourself. Some sort of change that you want to see happen
around the world. Make a logical case
in your outline. You can write the essay
on it if you want. But for this final project, all I want to see is the
outline on your napkin. I want you to take a picture and I want you to post it in
the class projects section. If you are unable to
take the picture, I want you to get the
contents from the napkin, put it on a Word document, and post it in the
final project section. Simply by writing this outline, you have officially taken an idea from your
mind into reality. That is step one of being
a great essayist to be. If you enjoyed this
