1. English Idioms - Intro: Hello students. I'm Hannah, your English language instructor. Today's class will be on English idioms. In this lesson, we will define what an idiom is and how they're used. Then we will explore nine English idioms, then review them. At the end of the lesson. Today, there'll be a project to help test and strengthen your understanding. You will find it and all the details in the project and resource section below. Let's get started with today's lesson. 2. English Idioms - Material & Outro: And idiom is a word or phrase that has an abstract meaning other than its literal meaning. Idioms are often referred to as a figure of speech. The use of idioms help non native English speakers sound more authentic and comfortable in the language. Next, we'll explore the nine English idioms in today's lesson. First, you'll be introduced to the idiom, then it's abstract meaning. And then see an example of how it's used within conversation. Let's get started. When Pigs Fly, which means something is impossible. Since pigs cannot fly, it has a rude or sarcastic tone when used. Let's see an example of how it's used within conversation. This year is the year I'll make a million dollars. Yeah. Okay. That'll happen when pigs fly, which means doing two tasks at once, since you would only be using one item, a stone to complete two tasks, killing two birds. Let's see an example of how it's used within conversation. I can kill two birds with one stone by getting groceries and gas and the same plaza. That's a smart plan. Which means the secret is out since the animal is no longer hidden, everyone can see it. Let's see an example of how it's used within conversation. Sorry, Then they told them about the surprise party. Man gets the cat's out of the bag. Elephant in the room. Which means there is a problem that everyone is ignoring. It would be very difficult to ignore an elephant if it was in the room. But the elephant represents something big that nobody wants to handle. So they ignore it even though it's obvious. Let's see an example of how it's used. Jessica, I think we should address the elephant in the room, don't you? Yes. I think it's important that we do it sooner than later. It's raining cats and dogs, which means there's a lot of rain. This one. I'm not too sure why we say cats and dogs for a lot of ring. There are a lot of mixed opinions as to the origin of this one. Let's see an example of how it's used within conversation. Oh no. Look outside the window. It's raining, cats and dogs and I forgot my umbrella at home. Call it a day, which means something is finished for the day. When you're done for the day, you can call it a day. Since the finishing of something signifies the end of the day, less you've had a day. Let's see an example of how it's used within conversation. We've been painting all day. I'm so tired. Yeah, me too. Let's call it a day. Time flies, which means time is passing quickly. Let's see an example of how it's used within conversation. How we really been chatting for two hours already. Wow, it really has been two hours. Time flies on. It's not rocket science, which means something is not difficult. Rocket science is the science of designing and building rockets, which sounds difficult to me. So in comparison, other things seem easier. Thus, it's not rocket science. It has a rude tone when used. Let's see an example of how it's used within conversation. Mouth is really hard. It's not easy. That's true. But it isn't rocket science. Bite the bullet, which means to do something difficult even if you don't want to. Before there were anesthetics and soldiers had to endure painful procedures during the war. They would bite a bullet to distract them from the pain and keep them from biting their tongue or screaming. So when someone bites the bullet, they're doing something they have to do even if it isn't pleasant. Let's see an example of how it's used within conversation. I really don't want to talk to my boss. I know. But you might just have to bite the bullet on this one. In this lesson, we discussed English idioms. An idiom is a word or phrase that has an abstract meaning other than its literal meaning. Idioms are often referred to as a figure of speech. The use of idioms helps non-native English speakers sound more authentic and comfortable in the language. Idioms we covered r. When Pigs Fly, killing two birds with one stone. The cat's out of the bag. Elephant in the room. It's raining, cats and dogs. Call it a day. Time flies. It's not rocket science. And bite the bullet. Are there idioms in your languages with similar meanings? An interesting one in German is Sean Fader for their Apple tikka COX-1 Gaussian, which translates to, I've seen horses throw up in front of a pharmacy. It's meaning is similar to When Pigs Fly, since horses cannot throw up and pigs cannot fly. Great job everyone. This completes today's lesson. As always, if there are any questions, please post them to the discussion thread. Marked questions. Question shall we are engaging in the content and help us to strengthen our understanding? So don't be afraid to ask as well. I always welcome constructive feedback. Please leave feedback and the discussion thread mark feedback to continue learning English with me. Follow me on Skillshare.
