1. Welcome: Hello and welcome to elementary kanji grade two. My name is Andy, and in this course you will learn 160 kanji characters and 480 vocabulary birds. The course also includes a Q with all 480 vocabulary words and printable practice sheets so you can practice writing the characters. As a prerequisite for this course, you will need to know Hiragana, Katakana, and the elementary grade one kanji. In this course, you'll find a video explanation for each kanji character. We'll go over their meanings, readings, and stroke order. We'll also go over the radicals for each character. By the end of this course, you'll have learned the 160 kanji characters that second graders learn in Japanese elementary schools. Best of luck, and I'll see you in the first lesson. 2. Radicals and Okurigana: Before we dive into our first lesson, let's talk about radicals and kuri gana radicals. Now that you've learned a handful of basic kanji characters, you'll start learning more complex characters with more strokes and components. You'll notice that many of these more advanced kanji characters share some of the same components. The base component of a character is called the radical, or bush. Every kanji character has a radical, although in some cases, the character itself is its own radical. The radical often conveys the core meaning of a kanji character. Take for example this character, which means goal. We can see a modified version of this character on the left side of the characters for Iron, Nail and Chain. Notice how all of these characters share a common theme related to elements and metal. The radical and other components of a kanji character can help us understand their meaning. For example, in grade one we learn this character which means to rest. The radical for this character is nine bent, which means person. You may also recognize this component of the character to mean tree. To help us remember this character, we can think of a person resting next to a tree, Okerigana. When encountering verbs and adjectives written with Kanji, you'll find Hiragana characters at the end of the kanji character. These characters are called kuri gana, and they indicate the grammatical inflection or conjugation of a word in Japanese. Take for example the word nomu, which means to drink. If we want to say drink, we would say, if we want to say didn't drink, we would say noaa is drinking and isn't drinking would be non. Notice how we only change the okigana at the end of the kanji as we change the tens of the verb. Here's another example with an adjective way which means weak not weak would be oak. Weak would be yaka, wasn't weak would be a. Once again, notice how the kuri gana changes as we change the tents of the adjective. As you continue learning characters, you'll start to notice more patterns to help you remember the characters stay consistent in your studies and you'll be reading Japanese before you know it. Good luck and I'll see you in the first lesson. 3. spring 春、summer 夏、autumn 秋、winter 冬: This character means spring. It reading is u. Its own reading is shun.
