1. Intro: Needle felting is a craft where we use a special
needle with bombs and some wool to create beautiful three D sculptures
and two D paintings. Hi, friends. I'm Zen, and I'm a self taught artist. I love to pan and I pan in
several types of mediums. Besides painting, I also love needle felting
and have needle felted lots of sculptures and wool paintings a
little over ten years. Well, today in this class, I'm going to teach you
how to needle felt acute strawberry kittie
or rather acute kittie in a strawberry costume. This class is suitable for
the absolute beginners, it's easy to follow step by
step detailed instructions. The class covers everything
right from the very beginning from making the foundation of the strawberry to
the final details. Before you begin the class, I will show you everything
you need to get started. Do not skip the tools
and materials video. After completing the class, you are encouraged to
do a class project and share a photo of it in
the project gallery page. I am very excited about this class and I hope you
will come and join me. I will see you in class
and let's get started.
2. Class Project: In this class, you will
learn how to needle felt a scrupture of
a strawberry kitty. The class is divided
into number of lessons with step by step
easy to follow instructions. After completing
all these lessons, you are encouraged to
do a class project. You can choose to
do the same kitty, or you can be creative and do a different one by applying the techniques you have learned. Once your project is done, take a photo of
it and share with your fellow students in the project gallery
patch below this video. This way, we can all
learn from each other. To begin the class, let's watch the next video on what you need to get started.
3. Tools & Materials: Hello, everyone. Before we start making this cute little kitty
in a strawberry costume, let me show you what you
will need for this project. I have put together
all the colors of wool beds in this red box. I will go through each color
and what they are for. This is a coal wool and is for the inside
of the strawberry. Since it's inside
and can't be seen, coal wool is often used as it is usually much cheaper
compared to colored wool. Everything inside this
strawberry is just cool. Rd for the outer part
of the strawberry. You can also opt for other
colors like a pink strawberry. For this short stem
and the calyx, I'm using a mix of
green and lime green. But if you only have
one type of green, just use what you have. Now for the kiddies
head and legs. I'm using natural white moon. As for the stripes, I'm using mustard color. But if you don't have mustard, you can just use brown color. This is light mustard. See the difference
compared to the first one. I use the lighter mustard for the seeds on the strawberry. If you don't have
light mustard color, just use any light
color like lemon, flesh color or light peach. Let me put the alternative
colors together so you can see that they are very similar to the
light mustard color. Okay. As for the eyes, I'm
using black color, for the highlight on the eyes, I use bleach white. Bleach white is very
white and it is very good for
highlights and snow. See the difference side by side. As for the nose, I'm
using dark pink, and light pink for the cheeks. Next is the best to work on. There are a few types of bears and my favorite is a form block. Make sure it's firm enough with tiny holes and very dense. Prefer tickness at least
2 " or 5 centimeters. With such thickness, your needle won't be
able to pop the table. I'd like to have dark
and light form block. Here's the dark one,
which is slightly less firm compared
to the lighter one. S thickness of 2 "
or 5 centimeters. Compare the two side by side, see how dense the
cream color one. As for the size, just use
whichever one you have. For me, I have few sizes to use depending on the
size of my projects. Next a pair of sesors And
lastly, a felting needle. My favorite is number
38 triangle needle. You can also use a star
needle if you have. All set and we are
ready to begin.
4. Strawberry Body: Let's begin by making the body of the strawberry
using coal wool. Take a clump of
wool like this and start folding and
rolling it up first. Roll it as tightly as possible. Hold it and now you can see roughly the size of
your strawberry. From there, you can roughly
know how much wool to use. See the picture on
the top left corner for referencing the size. It has to be at least this size to be able to attach
the Kitty's hat, but of course you can make a
bigger one too if you like. Here, I have two clumps of wool, and again, I roll them up
to check for the size. It's almost the size I wanted, but I will add another clump. This is because once
the wool is filtered, the size will strength
at least a quarter. But not to worry at this stage, as you can always add another layer if you
want it to be bigger. There are two ways to do this. You can stack them together and start rolling them tightly. Or you can roll up
one piece at a time, which is my preferred way. Once roll up, you can then take the next piece and roll
over the first one. Once you have done
two clums of wool, it's time to start
felting with your needle, so it's easier to handle before adding
another clu of wool. Using your left pulling and
holding down the fibers, then poking in front
of your fingers, making sure not to
pop your fingers. See how I turned and rolled, but still holding the wool with my left hand as I poked
with my right hand. It's very painful if
you pop your finger. So be very careful and cautious. Once the wool is secured,
it won't unroll. Then it's time to
add another layer. Repeat and roll up as
tightly as you can. Upon reaching the end, hold the N fibers down
and start poking. One secure add another
piece and continue on. As you roll along, try to form it into
a strawberry shed. Here I'm trying to roll
in a way that one end is point then pop that part
to maintain the sp. Once done position is standing with the sharp
end pointing down, then fool the top part
over and starting. Pop till all the loose
ends are secured. Once the loose ends are secured, it's time to turn and pop all over to firm up your strawberry. Since it's a repetitive process, I'm going to speed up
the video for this part. As you go along,
remember to take note of the shed and the top
part has to be flat. Once a while, stop and
squeeze the bottom as show to maintain the pointy sap. A tip to consider, don't pop at one place
for a long time. Pop randomly all around
your strawberry, so you will maintain an even. Pick it up and roll
in the palm of your hands and squeeze a
little to maintain the shap. Continue poking and, and I
will see you in the bit. The shep is nice and
the size is okay, but it's not firm
yet at this stage, hence the final size
will be a bit smaller. You can still add more wool to make your strawberry bigger. I'm adding another
layer to mine. Roll it up and all is firm up repeating all
the steps before. All is done, and I will
see you in on too. Perfect.
5. Strawberry Color: In this lesson, we
are going to color the strawberry and
I'm using red color. You can also mix a
little orange to red which will make your
strawberry brighter in color. Or you can make a pink
strawberry if you prefer. But today, I will
just use red color. We will work in layers so
as to get an even surface. Always use small amount
each time for easy control. So pull a small amount
out from your stash. Place it on your strawberry, hold it down with your thumb
and your finger as shown. Then start poking your needle to secure the whole red area. It's quite thin, so I will add another layer to cover
the whites underneath. You can skip this part if your
whites don't show through the red and continue
poking again to secure. It looks much better now
without the white showing. And now to continue on till the whole strawberry is
covered with red wool. I will let you all is covered, and I will come back later. Once all is covered, check through for any whites, then red ball, cover it up. H. Remember to re shap your strawberry
once a while. Sap is perfect, and
let's start poking the whole surface and
get it filtered firmly. All is star, and I will see
you in the next lesson.
6. Kitty's Head & Legs: It's time to make the
cute little kitty. We'll start with the head first. Let's take a small
amount of white wool. I'm using natural
white wool here. Roll it up as shown and pop a few times to get it
secure a little bit. As usual, don't worry about the size yet as we
can adjust it later. Now, take your strawberry and check for your Kitty's size. My Kitty's head
size is just right, but if yours is too small, you can add a little bit more
full and continue poking. Continue poking till it feels a little more firm and
then measure once more. If the size is perfect, then continue poking
to firm it up. Pork the sides inward too
and wash your fingers. Almost done, and
let's measure again. Perfect. And now for the final
poking tail is really firm. Last and final check. Okay, it's good.
Now for the ears. Take a very small amount of fool and twist only one end
with your fingers. Then poke the twisted end and
leave the other end fluffy. Continue poking and
twisting tail is firm. Place it on the head
to check for size. It's perfect and let's
make another ear. Do exactly as the first ear. Since the ear is very small, you can opt to use a smaller needle if
you have a number 40. But if you don't
have, just continue with your number 38 is okay. Take one ear and open
up the fuzzy end Sean. Place it on one side
of the head with the fuzzy parts hanging over the front and
the back of the head. Now poke a few times back and front till it's
attached to the head. Make sure all the
loose fuzzy ends are filtered onto the head. Continue poking until the ear is firmly attached to the head. You can adjust the position of the ear by balking
each side as shown. One ear is done, and let's attach
the other ear in. At the head on the strawberry again to see whether it fits. It looks nice and now to box some more to
firm everything up. To get a smoother finish, just off the loose
hanging fibers. Now for the stripes and
I'm using mustard color. If you don't have, you
can just use brown. Take a very small amount and
roll it up into a tiny log. Place it on the middle of
the forehead and it into Plaza I have the final picture on the top left
corner for reference. Use the tip of your
needle to guide the fiber along as
you pot them in. Once done, continue with the other two stripes on
each side of the first one. Now I will let you wash and I will come back
for the next step. All stripes are done
and now for the eyes. Take two tiny amount
of black wool and roll it up into tiny balls. Place one eye into position
and pop it in slowly. Remember to use the needle
tip to bide the loose fibers. D and now for the second eye, do exactly the same. Now for the nose, roll
up deep pin into a ball. Use a little bit more than
the ice so it's bigger. You can shape it into
triangle or elongated shape. It's done. Now roll too tiny amount of bleached white for the
highlights of the eyes. Place it on the eye and
very gently pop it in. Since it's so tiny, do not pop too deep
or too hard or else, it will disappear into
the black of the eye. Repeat for the other one. Now, for the cheeks, take a very small thin
piece of light pink. Place it on the cheek area
and gently pop it in. Now take a little strips
of black for the mouth. Place one end at the base
of the nose and poke to secure and continue
poking downwards. Now for the legs, tack four
small amount of white wool as shown and pop one end on each one and leaving
the other end fluffy. Turn the legs as you pop to make sure all around
are firmed up, except for the fluffy ends. Remember to pop the
tip also and also to twist with your fingers
to firm them even more. One leg is done and continue making the other three
exactly the same way. Once all four legs are done, let's hop to the next
video for the next steps.
7. Strawberry Top: Back to the strawberry, we are making the top
green stem and the calyx. I'm going to mix green
and lime green together, but if you have only one
green, then it's okay. If you are using two greens, then pull the same amount
and blend them up. If you are using only one green, then skip this blending part. To blend just pull the
two greens together and pull them a few
times apart as shown. Okay. Place it onto the strawberry to see
if you like the bland. Now pull a smooth strip
and twist one end with your fingers and leaving
the other end fluffy. Then place it on the form
and the twisted end only. Once done, leave it
stuck on the form and start to do the
next one the same way. Place next to the first
one as shown with the fluffy end touching while
the pointed ends apart. Pop the whole thing, including
both the fluffy ends. Continue with the rest until you have six pieces in total. It's done. Now carefully remove the whole
thing from the phone. Then twist each piece with your fingers
to further felt it. Place it back onto the
form and pop once again. Remove and give
them a final twist. Put the calyx aside and
now do the small stem. Take the remaining
wool blend and twist up one end and leave
the other end fluffy. Start poking and twisting
the end till it's firm. Pope and twist repeatedly
to get it felted quicker. Give it a final twist and
then open up the fluffy end. Place the talc on top
of the strawberry. Pop the meddle a few times to secure it to the
strawberry top. Once the calx is secured, place the stem right
in the middle, spreading out the fluffy fibers. Then start poking
the fuzzy ends to attach the stem to the whole
Callyx and strawberry. Again, using the needle stip to tuck in all the loose
hanging fibers. Pop each section of the callig halfway towards the pointy end. With that, we are
done for now and I will see you in
the next video.
8. Assembling: We have all the
parts done and now it's time to assemble
all of them. Let's start with the head first. Take a small piece of white
wool and fluff it up. Place it on the back
of the head and pop just enough for
it to get stuck. Then take another piece and do the same onto the strawberry. Now take the head and place it on the strawberry as shown. Slowly and carefully
poke with your needle, following the way I'm doing in order to securely
attach it firmly. When poking directly
on the face, make sure your needle
reach onto the strawberry. Next is to tug in all the fuzzy wall in with
the tip of your needle. Here, I will let you dug in all the loose wall and I will come back later
once you have done. After all fibers are typed in, check if the hat is attached properly by shaking it a little. Give a few more poking to
tie it up the joined area. Also reshape the shape of the
face and ears if necessary. It's done and now
let's attach the legs. Lets one leg in position
and lightly first. So it's easier to adjust the position
if you don't like it. Okay. Now I'm placing the second leg to
check the position. If it's not okay, then you can remove the
first one and redo. Here I'm rearranging both legs. Now for the bottom legs. Okay. Once you are satisfied with the placements, it's time to fix them
firmly to the strawberry. Pop your needle deep into each legs and making sure the needle reach
the strawberry. And also tucking in all the loose fibers around the leg with the
tip of your needle. Continue the rest of the legs till all looks neat and tidy. Once completed, check if it can stand without
rolling backwards. If yours roll over, just adjust the legs a little. Lastly, the seeds, I'm
using light mustard. If you don't have this color, use any light color like lemon, color, or p. Take a very small piece and
roll it up into an op. Place it on the strawberry
vertically and start poking lightly so as not to
sing it into the strawberry. Done, and let's do another one. Place it a bit apart
from the first one. I will do another one, and this time, I will place
it below the first two. Place it in position as shown. With these three
seats as a guide, continue to do more seats
all around the strawberry. Here's how it looks when
all the seats are attached. Turn it around and
check through. If there are seats that you
didn't like the position, you can just pull it out
and reattach it back. Mine look pretty good, so there's no need
for adjustment. Thank you so much
for taking my class and I hope you enjoy
it as much as I did. With that, I will see
you in the next one. Okay.
9. Recap & Final Thoughts: Thank you so much for taking my class on making this
cute strawberry kitty. I'm so glad that you
have reached this far and completed
the whole process. So congratulations. Now it's time to do
your class project. You can do the same as mine
or do your own version, example, like a kitty
with patch instead of stripes or a pink strawberry
instead of a red one. Once your project is done, take a photo of it
and share it in the project gallery
page below this video. In sharing your project, we can all learn
from each other. If you do post it on Instagram, do tag me at Fuzzy
Little Friends Studio. Last but not at for more of my inspirational
needle felting videos, go visit my YouTube channel at Fuzzy Little Friends Studio. Thank you so much once again for taking my needle
felting class, and I will see you
again in my next one. Bye for now.
