1. Trailer: Hi, everyone. I'm Saira and I'm from the block station. My pie, which is of the block all about productivity, Creativity generally on stationary. So I'm here today to teach you all about absolute beginner Basic haven't lettering. So you don't any artistic experience or talent to do this? This class is designed for the absolute beginner. He's been scared of trying our hand battery for the first time. You can use it in your journal for your craft projects or just us some creative therapy. So by the end of the class, you'll be creating something like this when you with lots of interesting new techniques. But you two creates interesting come lettering. So I hope you join the only needed book pen to paper on a pencil.
2. Supplies: No, I recommend just starting with a black man. You don't really need all the colors. You don't need a fancy brush pan. Don't expensive supplies. You don't need all of these. I'm just showing you some examples of the kind of things I might want to use when I'm trying somehow metering. So first up, we've got a pencil, which is really important. I use pencils a lot. I like to sketch out a basic guidelines for myself from where the hand lettering is going to go. Andi, I could just erase afterwards that it has any shame and using a pencil. Definitely think it's a really useful thing to use. So this is a very fancy pencil. This is my palomino Black Wing. You don't have to have a fancy pencil, but I would say Use a pencil that's very soft and we're about really easily. So now we want to the pens, and there's basically two types of pet I recommend for starting out your home flattering journey. So we've either got gel pens or kind of felt tip fine liners. So the gel Parton's, for example, these two. So I've got a movie job hunt in and your point That single 0.38 But I don't. Someone no 0.5, Um, this is just a random gel pen I've picked up, but it writes very nicely, right, So you nicely. It's got a nice, pigmented dark black line. The only thing you got to be careful about with gel pens is that they might smudge. So just be careful with those. So they are your kind of cheaper option that you probably already have in the house somewhere on the next option. Probably. My recommendation is fine. Line is some kind of fine line up. So we've got to basic black fine liners here. This is the Steuby low 0.88 fine liner. No point for on this is a big intensity fine liner. I believe. It's also not point before, So these are the cheaper options. You'll find these in most supermarkets. In all station shops get really easily online, and they're not too expensive. If you're just starting out on, then we have the city more premium finalists. So these are kind of the artist grade fine liners. So you have the stetler pigment. Linus. I've got that in a range of fitness is so when you step up to the artist grated fine line as you can get a range of thicknesses of the line. So that's quite fun to play around with once you are practicing your lettering. Since you've got really thin tiny no 0.1 that's going a little bit war. Been using that one quite law on the other side of got very sick, no plate. And then I've also tried This is a zik millennium. Um, find out if this is a really thick zero point eight. These are the secure a pigment microns on. This is a no point spree. So I would recommend you start with either no, wait three or not point for not put force. This is the size that he's to be low point ating comes with, So these are a great one to start with. Um, the advantage of these ones. I think they're just a little little durable. They give a nice dark line on their archival ink. So it means that the in quote fade where its income from these will slightly fade over time . So now let's talk about paper. So something that came to my attention recently. It's quite important how smooth your paper is. So this is a rodeo. Don't hot on these a great quality papers. You feel it's really smooth so your pen won't catch. If you're using a kind of low quality rough paper, your pen might catch on. Your line would be a smooth So if you could get a paper smooth and got a good quality. I definitely recommend that. And also the dog group is really hungry for guidelines. And if you're bullet journaling, you're probably familiar with this, but it's basically just like a grant, but it's a bit less intrusive than a great because we just got these dots as a great for us so we can use This is a guy flattering. We can use them to help us with our lettering size on our spacing. So it's really you when you start out. I've also made this principal pdf workbook on this course is going to follow the work work pretty closely. It's just gonna be more like the video version, so you can actually don't mind this Pdf workbook for free on my block. So you just have to go to the free resources library have to sign up for that, and then you can dollars this PDF free on inside it. I've spaces so you can have some some dog ridge, some space to practice a little bit of information on the lovely Spacey's practice in there . If you don't have access to Dr Paper, obviously you do need to print this on if you can. I recommend principally on high quality paper, because again, I mean it's easy if you write so smooth.
3. Your Personal Font: So let's get started. We're going to start with print clattering. So if you're using the workbook, it's the stage here on. Yes, I didn't say we're going to start with the basics. So this workbook only focuses on print battering, which is kind of left from this separate. So cursive is when your letters all joined up like this. But then print measuring is when they all separate like this. So you don't need to know any curse if you don't need to be very good. A close if well, he needs to be able to do is to write some Lasses switch. I'm sure you can do this is probably how you write in your everyday life. Andi, Like, may I imagine that when you write in your everyday life, you write quite fast. Um, on. It's definitely not as tidy. So when we lettering, we really gotta think about we're not just writing withdrawing letters. So when you draw, when you want something to look it so what we're gonna start with is our own personal alphabet. So, for example, this is my own personal kind of front is unique to my hand, but we're going to just start out by writing out the alphabet in capitals on lower case. We're going to take time and see how it looks and see if there are any letters that we want to improve. So I'm just taking my time. So this might feel a little bit like, um, I'm not actually doing any harm battering. I'm just write me off, but really slowly. Well, I think it's good practice because when you're doing any kind of lettering, see, I'm not super happy with how that's come out. Wasn't concentrating as much there. I actually just read it. That's a bit better. So other was saying, It's good to concentrate. I really think about how your forming the letters. No. Again those my back with double G. Andi, you can do this a few times if you like Teoh on. If you figure out OK, there's any left to see that I don't like how it writes it. I'll maybe pick out some time. I was a bit dodgy there, my practice writing it a few times, so I'm hoping that you did the same as me and use capitals that first time on. Now we're going to write in lower case. So we're gonna do exactly the same thing, but without a lot of k self about. So you might not really thought about it before, but I think that the case we write our letters in can have, like, a big impact on the wayward will. Look, if your hand's getting tired, have a break. I feel like you have to do it fast. You're taking your time. My house is getting a little tired now, so it's all about control. Um, and keeping it's slow. So you might want to also practice writings me over words just in basic lattice, for example. I think I need to know what a face this morning. Oh, yeah. So I want you to write down three words things that you either would like to do or would like to have this morning. So it could be like a drink, something to eat, something that you want to do so right down those three words just in You could do it in capitals on in lower case. It's like in my case, I'm gonna do my couples. Now, I just want you to take your time focus on getting the latter's exactly how you want them. So if we think about how do you see different words? Look, this would coffee quite calm. This would coffee. It's kind of like there's more emphasis. I need coffee right now. So Case has a really big impact on the way that we perceive Woods. So what we're gonna do now, we're gonna move on to our next lesson, which is mixing cases.
4. Mixing Cases: Welcome back. We are now looking at mixing cases. We've just looked at our uppercase and lowercase alphabet. You start looking at the impact that different cases have on the way you perceive a word we have these two pitches. Hello. Hello. This one is an upper case. So we more like used to re us. Hello. And this one is a nice friendly quiet. The same with the coffee. Coffee, gov. So, cases do you have a really big impact? Something that can be quite fun when we're playing with flattering, really simple thing to do You so actually play around with the case. So, for example, you could just go crazy Model of the cases of your letters you can dio on lower case one uppercase, um, or you could just go absolutely mad. So, for example, if I'm feeling a bit crazy on have none of coffee, which is pretty true this morning, I might do a little let Casey got a big Oh. Okay, so, um, on a lower case on a case, um, because some of these letters look the same. Lower cases after case, I'm actually going to do another case. E not just gonna go straight and then another. I love it. So it might look a bit strange, but it does have an effect. So coffee I would like a coffee. Give me the coffee. Oh, go. Free hand lettering is a style of art. So for me, when you letter, you want to express maybe a feeling or a sense mint or use it Teoh tying, for example of religion or spread. So if you have a bullet general spread, that's really perfect and tidy and neat, maybe you'll want something like entirely lower case title. If you have a general spread that's a little bit more messy and has been happening all over place, maybe you want to joke that with your lettering on use the mix of cases. So what we're gonna do as a practice, we're gonna take the months of the year because this is something that if you're using a journal or diary, you might want the latter this quite a lot. So we're gonna mix up the cases on think a little bit about some of the lower case letters look similar to the upper case letters, so you might want to play around with That's if, for example, there see the love a case in the upper case. Don't look that different, so you might want to pick out the ones that do. You look different and focus on them, for example, are is very different to the lower case, the queue ums. Maybe that I am you two different, but some of these are quite similar. So, for example, the sea is very similar, so we got notice that as much, So make sure you can kind of notice the change in the to. So there we go. I finished moments of the year and I just played around with cases. It's also just a great way to practice the different letters. 5. Size: Now we're gonna talk about the size of our letters, so it might seem like, quite obvious thing. But actually, we can play around with size to give a different look to our page. So have a look at these two. We've got Po and so they pay for enough case answering that one is big money. Small. So the big one is really great for a title on the small one is quite neat, but then we might decide you want a page where we have some more space. We have some more blank space on the page when we actually don't want to fill up the page. So, in which case we could use a smaller style latter. So, for example, say this is my journal page on Bond. I don't want too much focus to be on the title, so I could just right, so it's very neat. Look, um, it's compact on. It's not gonna detract too much away. Andi, Somewhere you might want accident. This I like small answering. I feel like it looks really nice. You can put some point underlying, um, get close and it's not too imposing on the page. However, if you wrote on. Obviously, it's gonna be a lot more kind of composing on the page. It takes up more space. It's more of a kind of statement. If you do, you miss in a gentle um, so it's just personal twist ready? If this when I might do, like this example, you stop Kind of stopped for general. So I want you to just have a go writing the same word five times. I don't need to start out writing it big, so I'm going to start out with this. This is gonna be my starter for Monday. Listed with Monday on, I want you to try and write. It's slightly smaller each time. I have used three great spaces there. So when he's slightly less give myself but, my dear And there we have it, we have 56 Mondays, actually, which is Leslie? So remember that leaving space can actually be its own kind of creativity. You don't have to Philip age, especially if you find drawing large letters more difficult. Harder to get them looking perfect. So, for example, this is quite a nice size. The 2nd 1 here, I quite like how this one is no, this to body that that one is getting a little bit too small on its behalf. Me to be adding any accents after I'm done with that. Except we have to keep spacing, which is something that many people struggle with on. It can also be another way to express yourself with your lettering.
6. Spacing: Welcome back. We are going to look at the spacing now, So spacing is something that a lot of people struggle with, but it does get a little easier with practice, and you can make it easier way things like grid lines, pencils. So I definitely recommend using a soft pencil that you can rub out. Just be careful when you are creating guidelines, and then you write your word in your pan. Be careful that you don't try and raise it too quickly. The calls. You might smudge your pen lines, which is really upsetting. So we're gonna look at spacing. Spacing makes it look less like just a word that you've written quickly and more like you've put some thought into how the word is going to look. We've got Monday again, set off Monday's In this. We've got it written with very little space between the letters. We've got it written with a little bit more space. Let's see that, and that gives us a little bit more room to add accents so you do things around it. We can even do things like dots between them. If you want to make it look like the friends right sing. So it just looks a little bit more space, and I think it kind of it's a certain stylus. Well, quite a minimal interesting style that we can play with. So I'm going to use the word Friday, actually, Friday today is I'm filming this. Okay, now I'm gonna add some more spacing. So I'm not gonna leave one books between approximately one, because the eyes another a small little. So we got Friday, and then we've got to go, This one so you can see in this one it just looks a little bit like I've put slightly more thought into the way the latter's are going to look on, give them some more space. Just looks a little bit more interesting. And it shows that we've been thinking about how you want them to look. This looks really nice for the kind of minimal bullet journal look. Which is why I definitely recommend when people are starting out. So I'm gonna believe even more space Now, This time I'm actually gonna use lower case change Lukoil space. I'm actually just kind of guessing that is a lot of space between them, but it does look really it looks really need. It looks what cute again on space. If we wanted to you, Do you think it's like nothing? Dots? Like I said, it was like the friends logo. So it means that's just a little bit more space for us to have a play with accents around the letters, and that's really easy. Looks really cute. That's really effective. But it's something that you can write a letter. You can do it. It's not too hard.
7. Height and Width: Welcome back on now we're gonna start talking about height with my letters. So you've already talked about our personal Alfa buying upper case? Lower case. We've talked about mixing up cases. We talked about the size, my letters. You talked about spacing. So this is one of the last kind of essential things to think about when you're lettering. Really, really simple lattice on. And then we can start doing some fun access. Changing the heightened worth of your glasses is so simple, but so effective. So have a look at these examples here. So I've got both upper and lower Case on the's are written with the latter's They've been, like, stretched up. They've been pulled on that skinny Andi thes are upper and lower case on. I've made them wider. Put them out so you can see this has a really big effect on how the latter's Look, I'm just going Teoh, I'm going back to hello. My favorite words to write. I'm just gonna write it as I normally would in upper case. Okay. Hello? Uh, now I'm gonna writes it, so I stretched it. So I'm not gonna change the spacing or the wit. I'm just gonna add some height. Don't you play around with where I put this bar on the H as well. I quite liked to play around with out. So you can have quite a different effect if you put it at the top or the bottom and quite find it, putting it near the bottom. So remember, you're not changing the wet. You're just changing the height so effectively are making the latter kind of skinny and tall on the O is a little bit difficult. Go. So I just told her on Now I'm going to just change the wits I'm gonna keep to this height this one square height. I'm gonna add some wits. That's quite a lot with that. That's fine. So that kind of short and wide. So see how different those three look no longer do the exact same with lower case. I just got my normal, huh? And then I'm going to You have to get down. I didn't think about that. At some height. You might have to practice a few times with this, Especially some of the curve your glasses. That could be a little bit tricky. Hello? On now. I'm going Teoh at someone. It's actually quite hard to do the Els because there's no a lot you can add to the wits so that you
8. Adding Accents: So we made it to the final video in this first class, which is easy creative lettering on lettering for beginners, the basics off print battery In the next class, I'm hoping to look at some cursive techniques. Basic cursive technique. Suck and help your lettering reach your next level, and from there you can potentially go into the brush lettering and all of that fancy, exciting stuff. But you stick with basics here now, and we're looking finally out, adding some accents so you should have the basics down with the cases size, spacing, the height and width on with the handsome easy accents. So the 1st 1 is sere ifs. So the serif you may have seen on fonts that kind of sun serif serif thing actually just means that it's got, like, a foot real flick. So this is a really simple way of doing a serif is literally just at a kind of, um, end line to the ends of Alexis. So if I've got Friday, all I need to do is at Cem mil feet to the latter's. So everywhere with this the end of the line. I just got a little tiny line. Uh, nice looks ready, Funky. So different with this kind of d you might just want it Me The line that's really way introduced syrups are this or if you could do, um you can add things like you'll circles So just show you quickly Can I add a little circles The end like this You can also add I've seen people aren't love hearts Hello, Quite small You might wanna at little things on the top So that's why the easiest techniques the next one we're gonna look at his line Thickness Andi, this is what people use in proper, like modern calligraphy. But you can actually imitate this quite easily. Site. The simplest way to do this is to Adam actual I 21 down stroke in each letter. So what that means if I'm writing in h those two down strokes because my pen is going down . What I'm gonna do so far in the h as normal, it's gonna be funny that that's OK. I'm going to actually asked some space. So I'm gonna make this into a little rectangle h on. I might decide I want to color in like this or what I might want to do. I just do the a is leave it blank and have the white space I could also Oh, we have added a serif there as well, so you can mix these up. I can also do a pattern out of pocket into it. I can also do you on in a color. So what to do with curved glass is straight. So I turned to do with this. I'll just do that. And then we have Hello. The last quick accent I'm going to talk about is, But where? I think so. Perhaps used to use bubble writing in school on its refund to use. I quite like it because it kind of looks a little bit messy. I mean, I use this kind of lettering. Well, this is actually a fun. This is my own handwriting. And I made it into a fund for my website. My brand. I quite like it's a little bit one key, but I think it looks quite playful. So we bubble left well before I think you can use your pencil. Andi, for example. If I want to do hello in lower case, I'm gonna just do this. Really likely give myself. Plenty of space between the latter's. I'm gonna go in with my pants, and I'm gonna basically just truell around What I've done one of the end and keep the l. A. Sample is possible. 22 rectangles and there you have it.
9. Final Project: So congratulations. We've reached the end of this class on for our final assignment. What I love you to do is to fill on a five page that half of any for a for a lot, with flattering off your favorite things So you can choose lots of different words in order to use different styles when you to try and use different capitalization, low case uppercase mixture cases, different sizes, different spacing, yuk unusual accents that we've talked about. You can use different heights and widths as well. So I'm gonna do that as well. In this class, it's that you just gonna be me. I'm going to time upset because otherwise it probably quite long I'm gonna take my time. And then what I'd love you to do is take a picture. First on, as you saw I was doing, I was using my pencil to create kind of like areas, so it didn't feel as daunting to Philip age. But every piece of houses come out.
