1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi friends, how are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed, especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all. To be successful with this project. I will guide students step-by-step through all the steps that they need to take so they will feel comfortable at all times. Today we are going to be creating this cute cat and pumpkin. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a sheet of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints and a paintbrush. I'm going to use this size paintbrush, but just use what you have available to you. You will need a cup or a bowl with clean water. You will need two different colors of oil pastels or crayons. You will need black and yellow. You will need a paper towel. Go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials. I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a Cat and Pumpkin Design : In this step we're going to draw a cute cat and a pumpkin. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to pick up our black oil pastel or crayon. And we're going to make a little cat's face right here. We're only going to be able to see the cat's face and pause. And the cat will be behind a pumpkin. Okay, so we're going to find the middle of our piece of paper. The middle of my piece of paper is about right here. This area right here is going to be the bottom, the chin of our cat's face. So we're going to start about right here. And we're going to end up about right here. And we're going to make the letter U. So here I go. I'm going to come down, curve around, and then come back up. I'm going to want to make my letter you pretty big on my piece of paper because we want the cat's face to be pretty large. We don't want it to be super tiny. Now that we have our u, Let's bring to slanted lines down. Then we're going to close up that space with another straight line. This is going to be our cat's face. Now let's add some eyes into the cat's face. So I'm going to make an eye that looks like this. It's a curved line. Another curved line. Just like that. Alright, now I'm going to make some really big pupils. So that's going to be a circle right at the top of that space that we just made. And I will fill these in with black. When we're painting. I'm going to make a small nose, a little triangle. And then I'm going to make a small smile. Two little lines that look like j's, a backwards J and a forwards j. Now let's make some little whiskers. I like to make just two or three whiskers. We go. Now what we're going to do is move down here, lower onto our piece of paper. And we're going to first make to pause coming out from under the chin of our cat's face. So I'm going to make one paw here. And then one paw here. If you'd like to put a little bit of detail into those paws, like some little toes. Go ahead and do that. Down here. We're going to make the pumpkin. So I'm going to start about right here on the cheek. I'm going to come around with a curved line, make it a little flat on the bottom, and then curve around and then come back up and then touch the cheek. This is going to be our pumpkin. Let's add a little bit of detail in the pumpkin. So I'm going to make some curved lines and they're going to end up about right here in the middle. So curved line, curved line, slightly curved line. All the way across our pumpkin. Now the top of the pumpkin, we can't see because the cat is covering the top. Alright? Now the cat needs a little tail, so you can make the tail any which way that you'd like. I'm going to make the tail coming out this way, curve around, and then come back down just like that. Now let's make a background for our design. We're going to make some graphs. So you can make any type of grass that you'd like. I'm just going to make some zigzag lines here for the grass. Then if you'd like to add anything else down here at the bottom, you can go ahead and do that. Any type of decoration that you'd like. So maybe I'll just make a little bit of grass down here at the bottom. Alright, now I'm going to come up here and make a moon, because this is a nighttime design. So I'm going to make the letter C. And then inside of that C, I'm going to make another C. That's going to be a moon. Alright, so let's put our black oil pastel down or black crayon, whatever you're using. If you have a little bit of oil pastel on your fingers, you can wipe that off on your handy-dandy paper towel. Because oil pastels can get a little bit messy. I'm going to pick up my yellow oil pastel. Or if you're using a crayon, you can use your yellow crayon. And I'm just going to make some dots. These are going to be some stars. I'm going to press pretty hard with my yellow oil pastel. Just make some circles. If there's a different type of a star that you'd like to make. Go ahead and do that. Can make a star shape if you'd like. But for this project, I just like to make the circles. I like to make them all around the sky. There we go. So there's our design. When we come back in the next step, we are going to be painting our design. 3. Step 2: Paint the Design: In this step we are going to paint our design. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to place a drop or two of water into each pan of paint. And what this will do is it will soften up our paint a little bit, and that will make it much easier for us to use. So I always encourage my students to take that step because it really does help navigate or paints or softening app. Let's turn our attention to our design. So here we have a cute cat and a pumpkin during the nighttime. And what we're going to do is we're just going to focus on painting the cat and the pumpkin in this step. Then in the next step we will paint the background. Sounds good. Alright, so I'm going to start out by painting my pumpkin. I'm going to paint my pumpkin orange, two different shades of orange. These two right here, a darker orange and a lighter orange. If you have two different shades, you can go ahead and do that. If not, you can choose the colors that you'd like, or you can just choose orange. My cat is going to be a black cat. So when I start to paint my black cat, I will show you how I mix up some paint for that. Alrighty friends. I'm finished painting my pumpkin. I used a lighter shade of orange at the top of the pumpkin and a darker shade down below. I really liked the way that it turned out. Now to make the black paint for my cat, I'm going to put a few drops of water into one of my wells and add a little bit of paint. It's actually going to be a grayish cat. So it's going to be a very light black that I'm going to use already friends. So I'm finished painting my black cat. It's actually a gray cat, but I use the black paint. Now I'm going to paint in those eyes and I'm going to use a darker black shade to paint those eyes in that's not quite dark enough. So I'm going to add a little bit more paint. Remember if you'd like a really dark shade of any color, you add more paint. And if you want a lighter shade, you add more water. I want the eyes to be pretty dark. So I'm going to make sure that I at a lot of paint. Yes, those are pretty dark, right? Alright. Now I want to paint that little nose. Want to paint that little nose? Pink, light pink. So I need to be very careful because my paint brush is pretty big. There we go. Alrighty friends. So when we come back, we will start painting the background. 4. Step 3: Paint the Background: In this step we are going to paint our background. So let's get started. I'm going to decide to paint my grass green and my sky at dark blue. I'd really like those stars that I created with the yellow oil pastel. I'd like this to stand out. So I'm going to use a pretty dark blue. I would choose purple, but I think that dark blue would look really, really great with this project. I'm going to go ahead and start by painting my grass. And then I'm going to move on to my sky. Alrighty friends. I'm finished painting my little cat and pumpkin, and I'm very happy with the way that it turned out. I hope that you had a lot of fun with this project. I will see you next time.
