About This Class

I animated my "signature" to use it on my website and as a YouTube intro, and you can do it too!

Learn a quick and easy way to animate your (hand)-lettering, typography, or logo in Procreate.
Even though the animation is “only” created in Procreate, the result can be used for many professional tasks, like an animated logo for your webpage, an animated quote for your Instagram page, or a custom intro for your YouTube channel.

We are learning how to:
Plan the animation
Do the animation and
Download the animation (as an animated image or video, depending on what you want to use it for)

1. Introduction: did you know that there is a simple and fun way to do animated locals and lettering and procreate? It's actually very easy, and I'm going to show you my little heck on how to do that. Their final result should look something like this. The great thing is that even though you only created an appropriate, you can still use it for lots of professional things. You could, For instance, put it up is an animated local on your website or you can create the custom in True for your YouTube, General, in this little course, we're going to cover the three necessary steps. First, we're gonna plan the animation because you need to know what happens when the second step will be to do the actual animation, and the third step is going to be the export. The only program we're going to need for this animation is procreate, which is available for the I bet I also use an apple pencil. But if you are a little bit more skilled with your fingers only than me, then I'm sure you can also just do it with your fingers alone. 2. Plan: as a first step, we're going to plan the animation, so let's go into procreate and open up a new document. Just click the plus on the upper right corner and create the new canvas. I just go ahead and choose screen size because I'm going to adjust the size off the art board later. But if you already know that you need your animation in a specific size, go ahead and choose this specific size. Now I already know that I want to use my animation on darker backgrounds. That's why now I go ahead and choose a black back from color. As a next step, I'm going toe. Add the text that I afterwards want to any meat. Goto add text in the upper left corner, still at it. Now I'm just going to write my name and you don't see it right now because I typed it in black, so I'm going to change it toe white, and I'm going to choose a nice hand written fund to make it look more like a signature. Then I'm going to resize it to the size of the canvas. I'm going to make it as biggest possible is the next step, I'm going to crop and resize the canvas. I want to make sure that there is not too much blank space around my design. So I tried to get this narrow to the design is possible. At the end of the day, I want to export it on a transparent background. So, as you can see, if I total and an total that last background layer, it turns transparent or it brings back the black background. So before I exported, I have to make sure that I untangle the black back ground. But for now, to make things more visible, we just leave it on. I'm going to remove the Slayer because I don't need it. So that was the next step. We have to plan the animation. So here you can see me writing. I do this to figure out how to any mated than which part I have to any mate where because to do the actual animation, we're going to create lots of layers. Basically, we're going to a record, engineer our animation and go from the full image to nothing. So what we're going to do is to a race single pieces off the lettering one by one, and when you animate this at the end, it will look like somebody's just writing the signature. But for this, it's important to know which parts you right win. So I strongly advise that you just take a moment to figure out which strokes you do in which directions or which part of the letter you write win. And when you have a clear understanding off this, we can go ahead and start the animation. 3. Animate: now that we have a clear understanding of what we want to do, it is time to any meat, but there is one last important step that we have to do before we're starting. If you are using a text like I am using for this example, you need to rest arrest image. Otherwise, you will not be able to erase parts off it. To do so, click on the layer menu and on the little a symbol next to your text. Then on this menu that will open up, choose, rest arise. By the way, you do not need to use that type text like I am using. For this example, you can also use the same technique to any made your hand lettered calligraphy or any other image. Next, we're going to bring up the animation assistant, go to tools canvas and turn on the animation assistant. As you can see, a new Tobar shows up at the bottom off the screen. Here we have several options we've play. We can always preview our animation and also check it during the process. We can also change a few settings. For example, we can change the frames per second the higher number you choose this mother, your animation will look like also at the bottom. You can choose between three different settings. One shot loop and Ping pong. One shocked ballplayer animation once and then stop Loop will repeat animation, Definitely, and Pink Bone will play your animation but then played back hordes like a big pong ball, going back and forth on the table all the way on the right here. It says that frame, which is something we will not use very much in this tutorial. As you can see, right now, we only have one frame with our ticks. If I press now at frame, a new frame appears. Unfortunately, the frame is empty since we're animating back hordes. This is not very helpful for us. We're not writing the text. We are raising it from the end. So let's just go ahead and delete this frame because it's useless for us. What we need to do is to double tap on the current frame and choose duplicate. No, we have two frames with identical content. Now let's go ahead and actually start animating. As you know, by now we want to erase a little part of the design. But since we're working backwards, let's take a little moment to plan the animation and how it needs to look on the timeline once it's done all the way on the left. In the beginning, you need to have a more or less empty frame because that's where we start writing and all the way on the right At the end, you need to have the finished signature. Therefore, we always need toe work on the 1st 1 because we're removing part off the design. So let's go ahead and choose the first frame, and we're going to erase a little piece off the signature to do so. I go to the razor. I'm gonna pick one type of razor that I want to use, and then I'm going to change the streamline. Set things a little bit because I want to have full control off the placement off my strokes. So let's just go ahead and raise A little piece looks good. So when we're done with this, we double tap on the first frame and hit duplicate again. As you can see, the new frame is added after the 1st 1 but the 1st 2 frames are now identical. So now it's important that we again choose the very 1st 1 and go. We raise the next little part there. Always make sure to work in the front off the timeline, duplicate the first frame and then choose the 1st 1 again and removed the next part. A few parts of the animation are a little bit tricky, and to make our animation look natural, we need to be aware of this. For example, there is this part where the H 20 gs, if you would write it, the last part of the H would most likely overlap with ES. So you need to any mate that accordingly, and make sure to leave a tip at the ending off the age when you erase that specific part of Theis. Now let's go ahead and finish DS. Now that we're done, let's preview and see how it looks to do so. Press play on the left, and if you want, you can choose the amount of frames in the Settings menu to make it look smoother. I think it looks quite good for now, so let's go ahead and continue here on the age we have another little piece that you should be aware off. When you write the age, the stroke goes up and then down. If you would immediately erase the whole corner, it would look strange. So we have to draw that correctly, but first leaving that upward stroke intact. But I guess by now you've got the idea of how this animation works. Always duplicate the first frame than make sure to choose the first frame again and to raise a little part there. Now, let's just quickly finish a raising the parts and finishing the animation. Good. Now we're done. It's time to preview the animation. Now. You can also bet to see what the three settings one short loop and people are doing. This one is one shot word. Animation just runs once, and then it stops. Loop repeats it indefinitely and ping pong. Place it back and forth if you like. The way your animation turned out, all we have left to do is tow expert it, and that's what we're going to talk about in the next section off this course 4. Export: So now all we have left to do is to export our animation. Make sure to choose a high number for frames per second. To make your animation looks, Move. If you want to use it as a local, for instance, on your webpage, go ahead and exported as a gift or a PNG, depending on which file type your website can handle. Then just go ahead and uploaded to your weapons, and it will look something like this. If you want to use it as a video or is an overly. For instance, if you want to create the YouTube in true for yourself, you need to export. It is a video file. In that case, you have two options. If you just want it is an overlay, so you need a transparent background. You need to go with an animated H E V C. This you can just place over any video, and it will show up. Make sure to deactivate that last background layer to give it actually a transparent background. If you choose to export as an animated and before it cannot handle, transparency is so. What you could do is just add any background that you want and then exported like this. So that's it. Our little animation is complete. Now you can go ahead and upload it to wherever you want to. I hope you found this course helpful. And if you have any questions, please let me know.
