1. Drawing Patterns Finding Zen in Zentangle Intro: today will create with joy. Hi, my name is Kim, and we will be working through this entangled method. What is entangle Europe? Entangle isn't easy to learn, fun and relaxing way to draw simple lines that build up to beautiful patterns. In this class. You learn a little bit about the history of the tangle method, some simple tools, and we'll bring you through some ways to draw these beautiful patterns and put them together in beautiful ways. When I first started, I started with practicing some of the simple patterns step by step by step and building them up to look fairly complex. But as you can see, it's just built one stroke at a time, and I was putting them together in ways that were interesting to me. As I continued, mice entangle practice and was trained as certified sent tangle. Teacher I started become more interested in using floral patterns in very organic ways, putting the very simple patterns together to make beautiful illustrations. And sometimes they can be put together in more structured ways inside other lines or other illustrations, and sometimes they can become more abstract and more variation within the line. So join me today as we work through resent ankle journey and create beautiful images
2. About Zentangle: anything is possible, one stroke at a time. At first glance, as entangle creation can seem intricate and complicated. But when you learn how it's done, you realize how simple it is, sort of like learning the secret behind a magic trick. Then, when you create a piece of Zen tangle art, you realize how fun and absorbing the process itself is. I love presenting in a workshop setting with people who are convinced they can't draw. Then within 15 minutes they have easily accomplished what they thought was impossible. This is one of my favorites. Entangle moments, because then I asked, What else do you know that you can't do? You can transfer that inside and experience of successive accomplishment to any life experience. Something may look complicated, but now you know that you can do it. One simple stroke at a time. Zen tangle is a language onto itself is entangle provides the opportunity for the individual to reach a calm and relates relaxed state of mind. Sent angle is not just a art form but also a form of meditation, mindfulness and stress reduction. One refrains from planning and allows the lines and shapes toe unintentionally emerge on the paper. Some of the benefits of Sen tangle are calming and anxious, mind increasing self confidence. Simple and portable. There are no mistakes. With disentangle method. Anyone can create beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It's easy to learn and easy to do. Sets start with simple patterns and progressed to beautiful patterns. It's fun and relaxing. Creating Zen tangle art provides a fun and lighthearted way to relax and intentionally facilitate a shift in focus and perspective. Disentangle method is sufficiently structured and organized so you can enjoy and benefit from an activity that otherwise might be considered whimsical. No mistakes as entangle is always his entangle. You can't fail if you feel you made a mistake. Take that as an opportunity to suggest that even though you did something unexpected or unintended, since there is no eraser, it gives you a chance to use that mistake as a base for new and unexpected unexpected patterns. Once upon a time, not so very long ago, a man named Rick Rick Roberts, a former monk and maker of a native American flutes, was watching a woman, Maria Thomas, a tremendously talented calligrapher, putting details into a manuscript. She was working on and the rest is history. But they explain more in their book. The book was entangle One day, Maria told Rick what she would experienced as she drew background patterns on a manuscript she was creating. She described her feelings of timelessness, freedom and well being and complete focus on what she was doing with no thought or worry of anything else. You're describing meditation, Rick said. Rick and Maria wondered if they could create a simple system so others might enjoy a similar experience. And so began the journey towards discovering this simple and elegant system called Zen Tango. Little did they know that it would grow this quickly and touches many lives in his many ways. As it has. I have been personally taught by Rick and Maria to very generous and warm people. I hope to help others the way they helped me. Included in this course is a pdf to download to continue yours entangle practice. It includes the directions to complete the pattern shown in this class and a few more to make unique art cards. This was the welcome sign created by Rick and Maria. As I entered my eyes entangle certification join me As we journey into his entangled in the next video, we'll show you some simple tools to get you started.
3. Tools of the Trade: So let's think of some tools of the trade to get you started. Simple tools you may already have around the house paper pens and a pencil is all you need to get started. You may prefer to work on artist tiles, which are 3 to 5 inch square pieces of white paper or art paper that come in pads or packages and are available from many supply art supply stores. You may prefer watercolor paper, so look for hot press, which is a very smooth surface, and cut them down to size 3 to 5 inch whatever size you prefer. Or you may like to draw your designs in a journal and keep them together that way again. You can draw them on the full page or draw small squares of 3 to 5 inches and place your designs in those small squares. You need a simple pencil, but no eraser. There are no mistakes. Ins entangle so you won't be needing the eraser. Uh, simple black felt tip pen work wonderfully. You can choose from a variety of them. Ah, thin pen works really well. I prefer the micron 01 which gives a nice, thin line on such a small piece of paper. Microns come in various wits. I generally use a 01 for the drawing of the design, and then I sometimes use a 03 or 05 which is a little bit thicker to do some of the coloring in the little spaces. So that's all you need. Oh, a comfortable place to do your designs in. I look forward to working with you and designing some beautiful patterns as we work through this course.
4. Cresent Moon: Let's begin in. This class will start with our four dots in each corner of your art card. And as we put the four dots were going to think about four things that we're grateful for. And then we'll join her four dots with her pencil. And these don't have to be straight lines. They can be any sort of line you want, and now we have a piece of paper that is no longer empty, and we have a place to begin once we've done our four dots thinking of gratitude. Joining the four dots we're going to add in what's called a string and a string is any continuous line that breaks up our shape into smaller shapes in which we can put her patterns in. So this time I'm just going to do a simple shape where I'm going to start on one side when he's going to do straight lines across and come back and hit another side. Yours doesn't have to look like that. It could be any string, but really, for this one, we want for spaces. And so I did simple street lines for first tangle or pattern. We're going to work on Crescent moon. This one's a great one to start with because it uses circular motions and what we call an aura in then language. So I'm going to take my smallest spot, and sometimes I just like to rotate my tile around to make it more comfortable. And as we work on this, I want you to remember three things. One. Just breathe and relax to take your time. No one's rushing you. And three, there are no what ins entangle. In other words, there are no mistakes since entangle, and that's why we don't have any erasures with us today. So we're going to start with our tangle pattern called Crescent Moon and like it suggests, I'm just going to make some crescent moons around the outside of this one shape. I'm going to go from the line to the line. Yours can be smaller or larger, whatever you prefer again, If some are small and somewhere large, it's not a mistake. It's always a creative opportunity. Step two of our crescent moon pattern is I'm going to put an aura around each of these crescent moons, and an aura is just a line that goes exactly around the other line trying to keep similar space in between. And then Step three is this time. I'm just going to put another or around, but this time more of a continuous line and jump over places and follow my line, where it's a little bit too squishy. And the last part of this pattern is I'm going to put an aura on the inside by following those lines, and you just completed your first pattern or tangle ins entangle called Crescent Moon. Join me for our next pattern in the next video.
5. Printemps: Brinton will be our second pattern in this class. It's another circular pattern, and that's why we will do it. Second, I'm going to take another one of my smaller areas and I'm going to start with a circular pattern. I'm going to start with tiny, tiny, almost invisible dot in the middle. I'm going to go around it and around it next I'm going to make is a little bit larger. I'm gonna start in the center. I'm going to go around and around and partly around again. And so we've got a lot of space left. And so what I'm going to do is start another parental. But when I reach a line, I'm gonna lift my pen Pretend that the line continues behind it. Bring it back out. It hits another line. Pretend that my line goes underneath and bring it back out. I'm going to make another one over here. Start in the middle around it hits another line I lift my pen gonna pretend that the line continues behind and comes back out again Continues behind comes back out continues behind again These cumbias big or a small as you like, but you can start to see that some are appearing behind other ones. From here, we can see there's lots of white space is so I'm gonna fill in with some little little parental filling in some of the spaces with some tiny circular motions, and I'm still left with some blank places. And so what I'm going to do here is with my pen. I'm just going to color in some of these spaces that are here, and it will make her beautiful circular patterns kind of pop out. Got a few little spaces that can be filled in, and so continue filling in your spaces. And when you're complete, I will see you in our next video to learn another new tangle.
6. Hollibaugh: and so we're ready for our third tangle or pattern. And this time I'm going to choose my largest block that I have left. And this pattern or three sayings entangle a tangle is called Holy Bow. All the names don't really have anything to do with actual shape here making, and that's for a reason, so that when you're actually drawing your lines, you're not really thinking of anything in particular. So it allows your mind to free up. So let's start with Holly Bell. I'm going to start with a line that goes from one side of my shape all the way down to the other side of the shape, a nice straight line. And then I'm gonna parallel that with another line that is about the same width as a pen. And then I'm going to put a line going underneath that again. I'm rotating my card instead of my neck. It's much more comfortable. So at another angle I'm going to put another line, and when I come to that plank or line I've just drawn, I lift my pan. I continue on the other side. I'm going to make this line rectangle a little bit thinner than my very 1st 1 Rotate my tile again. I'm going to start at one side of the shape. I'm going to draw a straight line, and wherever it hits another line I've already drawn, I lift my pen and bring it from where it should appear on the other side again. This one is going to be a little bit thinner. Sometimes your lines, maybe wavy. They may not be straight, and that's okay, too. And when you're done, it's going to look like a bunch of almost wood planks that have fallen haphazardly upon one another. And we've got some space in between some places, and that's okay, too. I'm just turning it around to see him. Is there another lie? And I would like to put? I think I'm gonna put one last one in here. I'm just going as far as my frame is, allowing me at this point again, continue until you feel you have enough planks in there and join me in the next video for our last tangle for this class
7. N'Zeppel: we're ready to complete our art card with one of my favorite tangles called Ends Apple. So this one will begin similar to Holy Bow with straight lines. And I'm going to put straight line going lengthwise, my longest point and another one going across my longest side of my shape. And then I'm going to turn it and I'm going to put a couple of lines going in the opposite direction here, so it looks like we're starting to build some squares. Step one of example. Step Two is I'm going to put in X in most of my boxes here that I can fit in X again. My pencil grip is light. There's no need to push hard thes pens. Very light touch and the ink goes down on the paper. That's the beauty of this nice black ink. You don't need to press hard for the ink to go in. And I have two small triangles here, so one I'm just going to cut in half and the other I'm gonna leave the same so you can see how we have a variety of triangles. Step one was drawing our lines. Step two was making our X Step three is tracing some of those lines to put ovals inside the circles. And so I'm going to begin in any one of the triangles. I'm going to start part way on a line, going to trace it round the corner traced the line around the corner, traced the line around the corner, so watch a couple more. It has different designs, depending on where you place your line. But again, I'm going to start part way along the line around the corner. Trace the line around the corner, traced the line around the corner, and I'm going to continue on until I have put these kind of oh well, oval triangles within my real triangles. And you can see that after a bid, a very special shape starts to emerge again. Take your time. Press lightly. Freeze. So once you've finished tracing all those pieces, you've actually completed your first art card. So join me in the next video to appreciate your art card.
8. Appreciate: in this last section of the class. I'm just going to I've traced over to see outside of my frame, and this will tie everything together, all the shapes of my art card and all the shapes of your beautiful art card. The other thing I've done is I've rotated around and looked at the beautiful art from a variety of perspectives and decided which way was going to be up and which way was going to be down and on the bottom of my heart card. I just placed my initials, Um, in whatever way you want. They can be boxy, curvy, but just something small to show that you are the artist of this beautiful art card. And our music today has been, um, by Kevin McCloud, and it's called Healing and its Licence under Creative Commons. So join me in the last video to see some variations of what can be accomplished through some of these patterns and also, um, some ideas on the next classes on shading and how these shading can help pop out some of these beautiful patterns
9. Drawing Patterns Finding Zen in Zentangle Conclusion: you've just completed a piece of San tangle art. You've worked your way through this entangle method by starting with gratitude and appreciation, placing in four corner dots and a border a string to place your shapes into tangles or patterns to fill those shapes. And our next course will take a look at shading, and you finally put an initial and signed it to appreciate again complete the class project and place it in the course here so that we can all appreciate your beautiful art urge you to download the PdF that's included with the course. And I encourage you to work through the patterns in various ways within a string and without a string, they can become beautiful images. I look forward to appreciating your art.
