1. Introduction: Thanks for joining my drawing
exotic orchids class. Today, I'm going to be
showing you how to draw the front view as well as
the side view of the orchid. I'm going to go over a
little bit of anatomy as well and show you
how to draw this stem. This is a very beginner class, and you don't need a
huge amount of supplies. I'm Tammy, a mixed media artist, and I'm excited to show you how to draw such a beautiful flower. In my next lesson, I'll go over all the supplies
you're going to need, and it's not going to be
too many, so I'll see you.
2. Supplies: Let's go over your supplies. You'll need a number two pencil, just a regular pencil, some sketch paper, a
sharpener for your pencil. An eraser. I just have a
few different types here. A black pen. I've got these microns with
different nib sizes. This is a number five. I've got a number three, and
I got this four pack also. So there's a one and a two. The next items will be stuff
that you are just optional. So pens. Some colour pens,
some colored pencils. A ruler just helps with sizing. And then a white gel pen is great if you're adding
color to your flowers, and you want those pops of color of white
color on there for, like, the light
that's bouncing off. So that's all you need
for this project. Next up, I'll go over
the flower anatomy.
3. Anatomy: Et's go over some
orchid anatomy. You can get this in the projects and resources area
of the website, this sheet, as well as some
references for the flower. The orchids a beautiful
but semi complex flower, and there's loads of them. It symbolizes beauty
and strength. It's great as a gift
and for home decor. And you'll find orchids
all over the world, especially in the tropics. It's got this really
distinct look and different orchids have a little bit different
curves and that type thing. I'm just going to go with
a standard orchid here, we're going to be drying
both the front and the side. I've got some references here. You'll see some of them
are more smooth and others have loads of
freckles or speckles. Let's go over the anatomy sheet. We've got these petals here, one on each side, and then
you have these supples, there's three of them, one at
the top, two at the bottom. Then you have the
lip and the column. And there's these little
curves over here. Then you have the stem and a leaf and then another flower coming off in this description. So now let's move on to
drying your first flower. We're going to do the front
view. I'll see you there.
4. Draw the Front View: Let's draw the
orchid front view. You can get your
step by step guide in the projects and
resources area, and this is one of two sheets. You'll want to get both sheets. I'm going to show you
how to break this down into smaller shapes, making it more simplified. So let's get
started. You'll need your paper and your pencil, your sharpener, and an eraser, and then your black pens. Step one. So start with
this mushroom shape. Now, let's add a
curvy V shape below. Step two. Let's now add in these
wings, one on each side. And you'll want
those little lines that come down
showing that there's some curvature and
depth to these wings. Oh Step three, add two upper petals like this. And you're going to finish
with the lip of the flower, and you're putting
this little line inside to give it detail. Step four. Let's now add
those three supples. Two at the bottom
are like arched, but more to the left
and more to the right. Just follow the guide.
Make sure that you pause the video as needed
and feel free to erase and get your shapes more
in line with how you view them in the guide. Step five. Let's now add in some
texture lines and dots. Some of the dots will be
smaller, some larger, and you're just going to go with pitting the dots where you like. Every flowers different
and unique, just like you. And I'm gonna be using that
pull and flick motion to give those lines some depth and give the flower a sense
of movement and direction. Step six. Let's add some more
bold freckles and shapes. Step seven. Add the
stem and a petal. Think of the shapes V and oval when doing this, and
that will help you out. Let's now add in some lines to show that the
stem is layered. Oh. Well, it's lightly erase. But don't erase so your lines are where you can't see them. You'll want to see your lines. So lightly erase. Based on your pencil, you'll
need to erase more or less. Et's now move on
to using your pen. If you just have pen, one nib, go with that, and I'm going to be using my
number five here, which is my larger nib. I'm going to do all
of the outside, and I'm going to do the
larger dots, as well. And then I'm going
to come in with the smaller pen later on for additional freckles and doing the little pull and
flick motions here. So now let's move on to the
smaller nib if you have one. If you don't just keep
with the same nib and do those pull and flicks giving movement and
direction to the flower. Add a signature if you like. And in your next lesson, we're going to be drawing the
orchid from the side view. It's a little bit more complex, but I'll be there with you all the way through.
I'll see you there.
5. Draw the Side View: Et's draw the orchid
from the side view. Make sure you get your step by step guide in
the projects and resources area and
follow along with me. I'm going to break this down
into quite a few steps, seven steps, I believe. So for step one, start this
flower off with a curvy bump, and you're going to do it more up here in this
section of the paper. Is sort of looks like an ear, feel free to erase. Try to get it in
this general shape. Step two, add the lip of the
petal and layer the tops. Step three, add an oval petal at the top and
at the bottom here. Step four on the left, add the back two
petals right in here. Step five, let's add some thicker shadow lines
to show how some petals are on top of others and that it's layered here
because it's on its side. Step six, add loads of texture lines going
along with the pedal And let's also add in the
stem here, two lines down. Oh Step seven, add those bold freckles. You can add as many or
as few as you like. As you'll see from
the references, some of these flowers have
more freckles than others. And this is really
where you get to add in your own personality to this
flower by changing it up. You'll want to use those
pull and flick motions when you add in what are lines, and they're almost
like little veins. Let's now lightly erase. Make sure that your
lines are still visible so you don't
erase too deeply. Let's now move on
to using your pen. If you have multiple pens
with different nibs, go with your larger
nib for this. I'm using my number five micron. And I'm just doing all
the outside areas. And now let's do those
little freckles. You can use your larger pen if you like to do the freckles, but you can do both pens
or just use one pen. So you can decide if
you want large freckles or small freckles or
a mixture of both. And also filling in
that extra texture to show which petals are
on top of each other. So I'm adding that
shading layer. Let's now move on to using the smaller
nib if you have one. If you don't have a smaller nib, just keep using what you have. And we're going to add in
all those little veins, and you're going to do the
pull and flick motions. So that's it. You're done with doing your orchid
from the side view. Next up, I'll tell you about your class project.
I'll see you there.
6. Class Project: It's time for your
class project. For your class
project, I want you to draw the front view
or the side view, whichever view you
liked drawing the most. And then I want you
to decorate it up based on the type of art
style that you enjoy. If you like watercolors or colored pencils,
do you like pens? I want you to choose whatever
style of art you like the best and then dress up the
flower and present yourself. On the paper. Once
you're done with that, I want you to upload
it to the class so we can all see your artwork
and give you some love, let me show you how
to do that here. You're going to go to the
Projects and resources area, and once there, you're going to click that Submit
Project button. On the next page,
you're going to upload your image,
give it a title, give it a description, add
additional images if you like, and a video, and then just
click that publish button. Once you're done with that, I'll be able to give you some love, and the other students
will as well, and we'll be able to correspond. Thanks so much for
taking this class, and I'll see you in
the next lesson.
7. Thank You: Thanks so much for taking on this challenging and
delicate flower. I hope the step by step lessons
that I gave you make it so that you feel like
you're going to be able to draw this flower again, at least within the front
view or the side view. And that in time, you'll
be able to expand your drawing skills
to being able to draw the flower and even other views. If you'd like to take additional
flower classes for me, I've got botanical
drawing lessons. Like roses, wild blue irises, Gerberi daisies, loads more of drawing botanicals.
I love flowers. And if you love to draw flowers, I'll be here for you with these step by step
guides for all of them. If you'd like to
follow me online, you can find me on X,
Instagram and YouTube. And all of those links are just going to be
down here below. It's been great having you, and I want to have you come
back for more classes. I hope to see you there.
Take care, and bye bye.
