I’m Riëtte, an illustrator and surface pattern designer from a small coastal town named Salt Rock in South Africa.

My journey so far has been somewhat unusual, but I've learned so much over the years. I started my career as a dance teacher, but due to a health issue I had to close my studio after 10 years. After that I sort of fell into cake decorating when people saw the birthday cakes I made for my children. I wanted to build a website for my cake decorating business and did a few online courses, this is where my love for online learning started.

I enjoyed the web design course so much I decided to take a graphic design course as well. It was around this time that I learned about Skillshare and bought a few classes on hand lettering and drawing – this wa... See full profile

1. Introduction to Class: you are ready for creative sport. One. This is the first class. Mysterious of loss is all about creating your brand. And this class will be creating a brand style guy I want to do the stateside takes the tools. I what I think about creating a brand style guide. I don't enjoy this class. Let's get started. 2. Your Project: your project for this class is a great and grand style guide for your business or brand. In the project section, you will find a downloadable workbook before you start watching the lessons go down. I think you can complete with book, as you were through each listen. By the end of the class, you will have created a brand style guide for your brand that we can use throughout. The race of the close is to create a beautiful brand. 3. The Foundation of Your Brand - Introduction: in this lesson, we will be looking at what branding is and they will be getting really clear on the foundations of our brand. It's a great grab your workbook and let's get started. 4. What is Branding?: before we get into the worksheets, let's first discuss what branding is Gillian Perkins say's branding isn't just skin deep. It's not just about your colors and logo. Branding is everything your company stands for, and everything that looks and feels like branding is about getting 100% clear on the mission off your brand. Why you are doing what you're doing and who you are trying to serve. It's about really understanding what drives your ideal customer and what problems you solving for them. Now we before, before we can get into choosing all the creative elements for our brand, we have to have a really solid foundation to build on. Why is that? Well, if you just start to choose colors and funds and creating logos and you don't know who you are creating them for or what it is exactly that you're doing, what the messages that you're sending, surely those creative elements just aren't going to make sense. So as much as what branding is about the look of your brand, what things look like? It is also about the foundation that what you do, who you do it for and how you do it and also the message that you're trying to sing. So in the next couple of minutes we're going to start working through worksheets to really get clear on that foundation. It's a little bit boring and a little bit tedious, but it really is important. I hope you enjoy it. Let's get started. 5. Your Personal Why: which one is all about your personal? Why? So we start with your personal? Why? Because it's really important to know your deepest reason for doing what you're doing. A good way to think about this is to think off if you don't take good care of yourself. If you don't eat enough or eat healthy enough and you don't get enough sleep, you don't exercise enough. Then you get tired and you get fatigued and it isn't possible for detective. Take really good care of other people. The same goes for your business. If you don't take care of your own needs first, then how you get supposed to take care of your customers need or your client's needs. So how are you going to think about this? Is you're going to ask us off the question. Why do I do what I do for me? And then you're going to answer the question and then ask Why again until you get to the deepest reason for doing what you're doing until you get to a reason when you think this is why I do what I do. I call this my selfish. Why? Because this is the wife for me, This is the white. I don't have to tell anybody else. I don't have to go and shout to the world that this is why I'm doing what I'm doing. This is just for me to know that this is the reason why I do what I do, and you'll probably find it's going to be very much in line with your business reasons. But it's important to know why you do what you do for you first. So the grab worksheet Number one now and I'll meet you back here for work. She number two. 6. Your Mission: Now let's look a worksheet. Number two. You know, your personal wife were doing what you're doing. Let's look at your business. Why the reason your company exists? Let's figure out your mission of your brand. You're going to ask three questions. What are my strengths? What is my company or my business? Dude, why does it exist? And what is it seeking to do? So it's important to first look at your strengths because that is what you really good at. That is probably the things that people are constantly asking you to do in your business or in your company. So what are your strengths Next? Why does your company exist? So what does it do? Do you take photos to you? Design? Do you teach anything? What is it that you do? Do you create something to you? Point, It doesn't matter. What? Why does your company exist? And then the last question is, what is it seeking to do? So why do you do that? Do you do it to help people? Do you do to do it to empower them to equip them? Do you do it to encourage them? Do you do it? Because it brings joy. Why do you do it? What is it seeking to do? And when you put those three together, you will figure out the mission of your brand. The mission is what? What are you doing and why are you doing it? An example of this for me would be I teach students because I want to inspire and empower them to create the things they want from lettering to their own brands and websites. So it doesn't need to be fancy. It can just be what you do. It just has to be truthful. And it has to be your foundation. It needs to be quite solid, because this is the absolute foundation. This is what you are going to tell people. So go ahead. Right now. Grab were actually number two and let's Valerie Man will meet backyard for worksheet number three. 7. Who: Let's move on to worksheet number three. In order to get clear on your how and your who, you first need to figure out the who. It's probably one of the most difficult questions to answer because we want to serve everyone. But it's important to I have a target audience to have that one client that you market for . So how do we do that? First, you're going to make a list of everything that you do. You might only sell one product. You might sell many products. You might only have one service. You might have many. It doesn't matter. Whatever you do, go make a list of everything that you do now. Looking at all those things that you do, think about what people might be interested in that product in what you have to offer and start making a list of those. It's really interesting to see all the people that might be interested, and it actually actually is quite exciting. But it's important, Teoh. Now remember that you can serve everybody, and now you need to decide from that list who you want to sit serve, So start getting ready to choose your ideal customer because you're going to get to know them really well, now, so go make you a list of what you do. And then you make a list off the people that might be interested in what you have to offer . And why do you make that list? See who you feel would be right who you feel you would want to serve. So go do worksheet number three now, and I'll meet you back here for worksheet number four. 8. Your Ideal Customer: Now that you know your target audience, let's see if we can narrow it down a little bit more to get to your ideal customer. They create an ideal customer profile. Let's really get to know who you are serving. So first, ask yourself what are the goals and values? What are they trying to achieve? What are the hopes and dreams? What do they really want next? Where do they find their information? Do they read blog's? Do they search Google or YouTube? Do they subscribe to places like Skill Shape? Do they hang out on Instagram or Facebook? Do I read magazines? Next, you're going to look at the demographics, their age, their gender. Where do they love? Do they have kids? What are their marital status? What type of income do they have? And if something doesn't matter what method, don't answer it next. You want to know what are they? Challenges. So what are the What are the things that keep them up at night? Is that something that they can't do? Is it something that they're trying to learn? Um, what is it that they worry about next? What potential objections might they have? So Why would they not buy your product, would they? Maybe they would say it costs too much. Or maybe it's that they don't have time. It could be many, many reasons, but what potential objections might they have? The grab worksheet Number four and go Philippine, and I'll meet you back here for worksheet number five. 9. How: Now you have a very clear idea about who your ideal customers. It's time to know. Figure out how you are going to help them. So first you're going to ask them. You ask yourself what goals can you help your ideal customer reach? Next? You're going to think, what challenges can you help them overcome? They think about what is unique about you and your product. Remember, you are just sending a product or providing a service. You make what you do unique, and no one can be you So, mike nuts about that. And remember that because that is what is unique about your product. And lastly, make sure that you are really clear about what you are selling. Make sure that people know exactly what product or service you offer, especially when you have a more unique product. Go grab worksheet number five now and filleting, and I'll see you up next. Four. Worksheet Number six 10. Values: The last thing we want to look at in this lesson is our values not only our own values but our business values and our customers values, because whatever values your brand seems to represent will dictate what type of client you attract. So it's really important that your values, your business values and your clients values align. So first look at your own values and write them down. Then write your business values down and they look at your customers values now see if they all overlap. At some point, it doesn't all have to be the same. But as long as there is some overlap, basically, you are asking the question. Why should people care about what you do? So keep your ideal customer profile in mind and think about the values that you and your ideal customer have in common. It could be things like transparency, honesty, freedom, love, family. Write down all those values for you, your brand and your idol customer. And then let's see if you have if you have some in common. If you don't, you might need to go back to your ideal customer profile in your target audience and reevaluate a bit. Otherwise you'd done with this. Listen so full in worksheet number six. And then let's move on to lesson number two. We will start brainstorming. 11. Create a Mood Board - Introduction - Brainstorm Keywords: Now that you're super clear about the foundations of your brand and it's fresh in your mind , it's time to start with stuff. First, grab worksheet number seven and let's get started on brainstorming. They got words that you would like to describe your brand. What would you like your brand to look and feel like? And then go back right down once you don't know that we're going to take those words and we're going to start searching for some inspiration to create a mood board. 12. Search for Inspiration Online: I always like to start searching for inspiration on Pinterest, so just open up interest and then typing any of the key words that you've written down. So one of mine was whimsical, and then you can just scroll down and see if there's anything that you like and then go open that I already created a mood board, a secret mood board for the for this project, my branding project. Specifically, some are going to pin anything right now. Another way to search is to use your keywords with something that you do. So I say the pretty Web design, and then you can see there if there's any pens that resonate with you. Also remember to look at things like color ballots and logo's anything that you've written down and that pertains to your brand that we're going to do search things like that. This is all going to be good for your inspiration. Just a quick look at what my mood board looks like. So I search the whole bunch of color palettes. I searched there for different websites and different um logos to see what they look like. Softer image is fun images and all different things. I also went for illustrations, which is something that I really do. And I also searched for a couple of Petain's It's a guy hit now and go on to Pinterest and go search and save images that you like. Another way that I also like to search for inspiration is by using stock photography sites . I specifically like pixel by, but you can really use any free side out there. Yeah, I just searched for flowers, and this is what came up a whole bunch of our pictures. Then you could just go download those and save them in a folder for later. Next up, we will be talking about a physical inspiration, searching for inspiration in magazines. 13. Search for Physical Inspiration: another way to search is by grabbing old magazines like yeah or scrapbooking Pipers like, Yeah, So in the magazines, I like looking at images, but they now also like looking at funds and colors and anything, anything like that. So, for instance, those picture is really nice with all the M batons that one specifically cried out to me. I know that I want softer, softer images. So this would be a really nice one for me as well. And I love patterns. I love integrate buttons like that. I also know what types of funds I'm looking for. And, um, so it's important to look through lots and lots of magazines. Yeah, the color palette is really inspiring to me. I really like the field off this this whole color palette. I think that I really drawn to the lightness of it and the bank and the white and even this lime green jumps at it. Me, This rose, for instance, is really cool as well. You and I like this. So you're already I found a lot off inspiration that I can use in my mood board. Then another way that I also like to look is scrapbooking, paper and other pieces of paper. I like to look at not only the patterns on the paper and the colors on the paper, although that is really nice. But I wasn't active. Look at the texture of it. So in this case you've got the bumpy texture, which is really nice. This one is really nice. I don't know if you can see, but it's got the silver and the fact kind of embossed into the paper. And I also really love the colors on that one. This one shot it out of me because I liked the butterfly. I was like the fact that it's standing out in its old glittery Don't know if you can see that on camera, but I love the butterfly. And then I also just look at colors so placing them next to each other to see different colors. I've got lots of blues here, which I might go for this one. I really just like because of the different type in front that they using on it and the words that inspire and memories and dream, believe in cherish. I think that that also really goes with my brand and what I am trying to do. Yeah, I was elected of the colors as well as the textures this one goes. There is an embossed texture. This one's like a I actually don't know what you called us, and, um, this is almost like a handmade paper. And then I also like the Spink and this water color texture on this one. And then there's some others with some more texture on. Then, lastly, some of the images that are found on Pixel Bay I decided to print them out just because I really wanted to see what they look like printed the colors and that. And I was really drawn to these flowers, carnations and to this feather. So yes, so that is one another way off. Finding inspiration. Grab some magazines, old magazines. 80 Piper's you've got lying around the house and any trinkets. If you've got any other trinkets that maybe you can take a photo off or anything like that , go grab it and get it together to create your mood board in the last way. That you can find inspiration with is by going outside and taking photos, Um, grab your camera. Go walk outside in nature and then also may be in the shops. You always have your phone with that with you. Most of us have phone cameras. If you see something in the shops that you like, go grab it. And then I also like to go and look for paint swatches. Sometimes if I'm not 100% sure of colors that I went for a brand or a specific design, I like to go into paint shops. And then I grabbed those little swash is off off pay pieces of paper of the swatches, and that really helps a lot with the inspiration. All right, so go ahead and go grab your inspiration. Next up, I'm going to show you how we put together a few mood boards. 14. Create a Mood Board In Canva: Now that we've brainstormed all our keywords and collected all our inspiration, it's time to create a mood board. Remember, when you create a mood board, this isn't something that you're going to show everybody or that you're going to sell its not a perfect design. It's just something that is going to put you in the mood. Hence the name a mood board. So that's been too much time on this. It's just a way for you to put your pictures together in a sort of collage type of way. Now the first way I'm going to show you is by using Gamba so you can just open a new browser or open your browser and go to Canvey dot com. And if you don't have an account, just go creating you account. It's free. You don't have to use the paid version. Once you've opened it, you can go to create a design or like in my case, what I like to do is say, use custom dimensions when you say use custom dimensions a little, this will pop up here and you can choose your dimensions. Now you can choose millimeters or pixels oranges. I'll work in millimeters because I wanted to be in a four size and then you just click on design and little opening into a new tab, and it'll look like that tonight for a blank sheet of paper and on the left inside. You have yet layout elements, text, background and uploads. I really don't want you to worry about a new of the elements textile background for now, because you really need to just create a mood board. So first you can go choose your layout, Um, or you can first go to your applies. I've already done mine. So go grab all the images you wanna add into your mood board and just upload them to Canberra. Then you're going to choose a layout. So let's just grab any Lautier so I could just show you how to add images into that. So I've chosen this layout. Now I go back to my uploads. Now you literally just click and drag your images into this layout. Hover over it where you want to place it, and it'll put it right in there for you. And click and drag and second drag and it see if there's anything why I love this feather differently and lost. All right, so once you're done, you can also, should you want more than one page. You just go click on Add. New page will be blank again. You can choose your layout picker Itron and start uploading your images. Now, when you're done, you'll just go to download and you'll choose the file type. Whether that Jay Big PNG pdf whatever you prefer, I just keep it on PNG. It's fine, and then you can just click download and it'll start downloading your document and you'll it'll go into your down. Now it's folder. So yeah, I created mine, and that is what it looks like. And I've already downloaded it. So I have my mood board and it's already for me, and I can print it out and go look at it and put it in my folder or in my brand style guide , just to make sure that I have everything. They all right, So go create your mood board. Using Canberra is that if that's what you like, 15. Create a Mood Board in Adobe Illustrator: the next way you can create a mood board is by using Adobe Illustrator once again, I want to remind you that this is just a mood board. Darren spend hours using it, so or creating it. I'm going. Teoh show you how I do it by just using shapes and clipping mosques so you'll create a new document I just created in a four documents or you go file new and then topping your dimensions. Click OK, and it will come up with a new document. So you're I've already created a few shapes already, So let me quickly show you what I mean, how you do this. So select your shape tools. I've got my marquee tool and I want to create a new triangle. Yah, it's not perfect. In fact, it's far from now. I work on two layers. The shapes I create on the top layer and the images are placed on the bottom layer just makes it easier for me. Even though they move all up to the top layer, it doesn't matter. So once you've created all your shapes, you go and you'll find your image that you want to place in the so I go file in place and let's go find an image like this one. It's I place remove the image holding shift so that the image constraints stay the same. Select both the image and the shape on top, right Click my clipping mosque, and then we go. Now this image is in that shape. It's do it one more time in the square file place. Find an image. Move image around. Now this image is on top on the wrong layer, so Holden shuffling to shift when you re size. So let's just move this image onto the bottom layer so that it's behind. Then I cannot say see nicely where on currying and what I'm doing. Select birth image and the shape right Click Mike Club clipping mosque. And then we go. So that's how you would create your mood ward. Using clipping mosques and shapes, I will have the template in the project section should you wanna just quickly come in and change your images and put it into if you don't feel like actually going creating all the shapes. So what you do to change the image is is you just double click on an image and it'll take you into the to the clipping mask itself. Double click again and then you go. Now you've got the image out there now. I normally go file place before I delete that image because I want to see where I'm going to put the next image. Select image. You want a place in there? Move it around. There we go. Now you see it is in there. Now you can select the other image and delete this image and then just click out of that clipping mosque. And there we go. You change the image. If you see that you don't quite like spacing over it or the way that it's sitting in there , just click into it again twice. Move it over and go out of it again. And that's it. That's all you need to do. Now go ahead and go make your mood boards using either Camba illustrator or in the next part of this video. I'm going to show you how to make a physical mood board. I'll see you. They 16. Create a Mood Wall: Now you know how to drink on board, using illustrator and using camera. The next thing I want to show you is my favorite way. Recently, I sort of fell into the space in my house where I now work, and my husband was help me to put up this wall behind me. This my it's worked out really great for me because I think to do exactly what I told you not to do. And that's get back on a design or on designing a mood board for a very long time, which is kind of defeating the purpose because you're not actually doing the work you're supposed to be doing. So it was a mood wall acted Teoh, Look at the stuff the whole time. I don't have to worry about being perfect. I want to take away, I want to add, and I just need to be in that space. So what I got you behind me is a blackboard where I wrote down all the keywords that our friend to look and feel they don't want to hit. And I printed out a couple of partners, and I've cut out some of the scratching piper and protect some of the images of interest for the weight size. And now what I'll do is I'll just put them out so that they are constantly they for meeting . OK, so I'm working on a project. I put everything on the whole I will constantly a reminder of what I'm working on. Also, it's reckoned up into different sections, so I'm working on more than one project at a time. I will use one section for a piece of work, one section for another, and that's what I'm constantly reminded what I'm working on, and I constantly think about it. So if you like me, if you need to roll over things, if you need to think about it. And if you need to be reminded the whole time about what you're doing, a food world might be the way to go. You got for gate, and you can change it. If you don't have to worry about being perfect, you can add to it. You can take away from it when the project is done, keep moving away. You didn't really spend a couple of minutes stating it out and move on to actually creating your product so if you create a wall, I would love to see your picture. And next up I'm going to show you how to just create a physical mood Board is you'll be Piper and look atop Secu printer. 17. Create a Physical Mood Board: now the lost by I want to show you to create some room board is good old paper and glue. Now it's important to not be precious about it because really, it is just a mood board. I can't emphasize this enough. I sometimes spent a just on mood boards and it really is. It's not necessary. All right, so I've already cut out a few papers that I want Teoh stick onto my mood board. I'm just going to cut these two as well because I really like the look and feel of these websites. And then I'm just going to start placing and I'm going to start doing And then I might even grab some pains and make some notes, maybe even with my with my key woods. So I think I'll speed up this video and I'll show you end result. So you got a couple of awesome mood boards? Well, one, actually with lots of big images, and it only took a few minutes, so I definitely like making physical mood boards. My favorite would have to be my mood wall, but this comes a close second. I will keep this in my brand style guide because it's always nice to refer back to what it waas that initially inspired you. I will also take pictures off my mood wall, and I will also keep that in my style, a style guide. Do you also keep reminding me off what it is that I loved in the beginning? I hope these helped you and I can't wait to see what mood boards you create. I'll see you in the next lesson when we start where we'll start talking about. 18. Color Your Brand - Introduction: you're very clear on the foundations of your brand. You know what you do? You know why you do it. You know who? You do it full and you know how you do it. You've also brainstorm keywords, collected inspiration and created a mood board. So you really know what you want to read to look and feel like. And that place in will be choosing colors. I'm going to be showing you a couple of ways to choose color palettes before we heard Before. We do that, though, I would like you to keep a couple of things in mind. You got to be choosing five or six colors for your Bennett. I would suggest going for a doctor. One, maybe Something Lata and so media once a good way to think about it is to think about what they'll be used for. I find that when I think about my website and what I want my weight to the plaque I find it easier to choose colors. So, for example, you have a hitter front. So what color would that be? Your paragraph. Paragraph front. It should be easy to read. So what color should that be? Do you want to background color? What kind of do you want to? Social media happens to be your foot. Also call to action bathrooms. You really want those staying out and then what colors will be using for your local. All of those things are things to keep in mind in the workbook. You'll see that the next couple of worksheets are just there for you to make cuts. Take those and make notes as you go through the next couple of lessons right down if you find a color and you want to use it for your header because you might forget later on, when you make this style, Guide will be putting all of our inspiration, mood Board and all these notes into the brand style guard so that we know exactly what is going on. So let me show you a couple of ways to choose a color 19. Find Color Palettes on Pinterest: so the first way that I like to search for color palettes that I like east by using Pinterest. So what you do is you just go to Pinterest and then search for the color and Edwards color palette. So in this case, I searched for pink color ballot, and it came back with all bunch off pink color ballots and notice how all of them have contrasting colors or brighter colors. Darker colors, lighter colors like I try to explain in the introduction video. Also, they have at the top here, like Pinterest always comes back with different search results that you can go click on something and see if there is any other caliber bullets that come up that you might like then another way that I use Pinterest to search is not by using the color but by using my keywords. So I would put in whimsical color palette, and that also comes up with different color palettes for you. Now, when I find a color palette that I like, I will go save the image. The reason for this is when you hover over the images in Pinterest, a sort of overlay comes over the colors so I like to use a color pick, too. I just downloaded one from Google, so we're not trying Color pick directly from Pinterest. It overlays it with like a gray overlay. And then you can't get the correct color code, so I would have to save it. And then you can grow. Go grab the correct color coat from the using your color picker. You can also use illustrator or Pinterest to grab goads color codes from there as well, if you if you have those available. But these tools, there's lots of tools like this color picker that you can just start download for free. You can just Google color picker. All right, so that's the first way that I used to search for color palettes to find something that matches what I want for my brand. Next up, I'll show you how to find color palettes that are also already made using a website that I love 20. Find Color Palettes using design-seeds.com: the second way that I use very often to search for color palettes in my design work not only for branding but also for illustrations and patterns and such that I create is by using the website called Design seeds dot com. When you go to a blawg, you will notice that our everyday she uploads a new color palette, and what's nice about it is that you see the photo and then you see the color palette. But she also gives you the color codes right there, so there's no need to use a color picker or anything like that. You can just grab the Hicks Kurds or write them down right there and mike nuts. So when you see an image, she's already gone and taking out the colors out of the image for you. She also, besides having that on the blog's, she also sorry you can also explore by collection. For instance, when you go to the spring Collection, then everything that is related with spring will come up there so more brighter colors with flowers and things like that, so brighter color palettes or, for instance, this one where it says switch sweet tooth and that's also brighter colors, like sweets in it. So, yes, that's another option that you can use. If you don't want to use a color picker, you can just go to design seeds dot com and search for color palettes in the 21. Color Palette Generators: Another way to create a color palette is to use a color palette generator and others. Works is you use images, whether it's your own images or free images from the Web to create color pellets. But you don't have to go pick the colors out yourself. The generator will actually go pick colors out for you, so I have to. Then I like to use I ever. If you go search color palette generators, you will find loads. There really is a lot, but the 1st 1 that I like to use his canvas one and I will put a link in the resource guide . So when you go upload an image and grab an image so open, then it gives you. It takes colors from the image that you can just end with the color codes and you can just grab them and go use them in your designs. So that's one way of doing it. Unfortunately, you don't have a lot of control over what it gives you with this one. It gives you five colors, and that's kind of what you get. But it's a really nice way, and it most of the time it's really really nice color palettes. The next one that I use is color palette if XO pellet If x dot com and this one works the same, although I like it a little bit more. So let's go upload a photo and let me show you why. Because now, yes, the fetter that it took out for me, and it gave me all these colors so I can now go pick and choose from these colors from this photo to create my color palette. So let's I wanted a more pink color palette. I would go or a pink rate Kalapana out could go for these 1st 5 colors, and I'm done. But the Alan eyes thing about it is that it gives you the color with the color code, the hicks cards and or to be guards, and it gives you the complementary colors and the triad colors. So if you click on each of the colors, it carries on to give you that. So let's say you do, for instance, like this one and you, but you don't want to play in pink color palette, and you want to use the complementary or the triad colors. Then it's right there for you already, so it gives you a little bit more options with regard to creating your own color palette. So this is an option that I was really like. I used this quite often to create color palettes from images as well that I take or that I find on free stock photography. Photography sites like picks up A. So if you like this method, go ahead and try it, and I'm going to show you one more method before the lesson is finished. 22. Create a Color Palette using Adobe Illustrator: the last way that I want to show you today to create your own kind of palate is by using Adobe Illustrator and the Eyedropper tool. If you haven't image that you want to grab your own colors from, you can just place it into illustrator like this. I've grabbed his further image and then I created six quays underneath it. Then I select the square Grab the eyedropper tool. Now the way I think about it is I first go for my darker color. Now I This picture has a lot of blues in its I'll have mainly blues They know Go and look for a medium color or a different color than they know Go for lighter colors. So first I'm going to go for a dark blue And it looks like these are the darkest blues. Then once I've got a darkest blue or a dark blue I'll select another square. Now I'm going to look for a more medium blue and then I want to look for a lighter blue. Here we go. Now you're in the back. They've got this purple gray going on, so I want to grab something they actually think I like the yes, the light of one. And then I want to grab some of the spink that is here in the background. And the last color I wanna grab is there right in the background that vahj pink off white color. And there we go. I've got a brand. You kind of put it now to save it. I just grab all of them. Then I select new color group. Then I can name it and I select selected artwork because it's artwork on the board. And I said Come to convert a process to global and include swatches Fulton's and then it is here in my swatches panel and now to save it to my library so that I can call it up in any other document. I would first go and select all the others that waas. So I select the 1st 1 and shift select the Saturday select all of them. I leave black and I leave white, and then I just drag them out to the bone. And now I've just got those a color palette that we just made the rep See, I see. I would never de selected this on. It's just quickly Mike this one again. Okay, so now to save it, I go, go, go to the swatch. Libraries mean you and I go to saves watches and then it'll come into my adobe folder and then I just create a name for it, feather and save. And then, if I want to call it up again, let's create a new document and it's I want to call it up again. Now I can just go back to this mean you in this, such as in your swatches panel Open Swatch Library scroll right down to use a defined. And then I can go look for that specific one that I saved. And then it comes up there and then I can conduct it to the panel. Or I can just leave it. Yeah, and I can use it as I need in my side. So it's going available for me to use. And this is one of the other ways that I use quite often to create my own color palettes. Now go and create your own color palette and GoPro posted in your project in the projects in your project in the project section, so that we can see what color palette you came up with. I'll meet you in the next lesson way. We'll talk about funds 23. Create a Color Palette using Canva: let me show you another way that you can use to create your own color palettes and where you'll have more control. As in Illustrator Week and Color. Pick it so you're I've opened up can vote, which is free. As we said in the mood board, Listen so you can open up can. But this is an example of what we going to be making. I'll be using a different image for the example, but just so you can see are we going to do this? All right, see, open up. Can va. Then you just click on custom dimensions. I just picked 1000 by 1000 pixels, but you can really decide what you want yourself. Then you just click on design and it'll open up in a new tab. Once it's open, you're gonna go to uploads, and then you can upload the image that you want to go create the color palette from if it's not already uploaded. So let's use this one. So I just click on it and then it goes into the outboard, and then I'm just going to resize it because I like to go to the ages. But you can It's purely up to you How you want to do this? Okay, now we're going to go over here to elements on we're going to click on shapes and then you can click on any shape that you want to create your color palette to be. So I'm just going to use circles going to make it a bit smaller. Drag it over to the side. Now I'm going to copy and paste it a few times, so I'm gonna go control copy control V to paste. Move it over, then control V again. You don't have to copy a second time. Can just control V moving over and notice these lines that it makes so that you can see that it is in line with the circle next to it and control V another time and one more time . And you can play a place on any either side. Now what? The circle selected holding shift and go select all the other circles. Now you can move all these circles around, and then I'm going to move it up to the edge and then you can just move it or make it smaller so that it fits into the outboard on Douala. There we go. OK, so now what I'm going t to do is I'm going to change the colors, the colors on each of these circles on I'm going to use this color pick to that are downloaded by just searching on Google for Colette Picker. And I just found this free tool. So I'm going to do this. I'm going to click on you, and I'm gonna say can or name it, whatever you want. And then it'll come up like this. Make sure that this little block is selected because otherwise you cannot grab. So let's say I go and click now on the can va. And I want to go grab a color when I click Control G. It doesn't do anything, so make sure that this is selected. Now you can go hover over any on other colors. Then I'm gonna choose the first trip. Okay, so now I'm gonna go hover over this. So let's first go for a darker burgundy color. Almost now. When you found the color that you are looking for, you can see it in the block that says color. And it's also got the color code. Stay for you. The new hit Control G and it'll grab it. And now you see, it's grabbed it year and that's your first jump. Now click on the next shop. Now go over. Sorry. Go hover over the image again and then find something else that you like. That I like this pinkish, purplish color a little bit lighter control g to grab it and then we go nuts. Also, grab that one. And so you carry on until you have completed and grabbed however many colors you want from this color palette. So for this in this case, I'm just going to do six. So I want a bit of a darker gray. We're gonna go grab that one. Maybe a more medium one for confined. Yeah, that looks good. Oops. Don't click on it. Grab it with control G and they go and I'm going to go for a very light one year, maybe almost like a blue control G. And let's do one more. There's a green might look nice. Something different. Don't want it to be to dog control, G. Okay, so now you have all your colors here. Now what you're going to do is click on the color, and then it just got down to the hicks code here and click on copy. Then you go click on the circle of her circle. Click on the block your for the color picker color. Click on the little plastic and now go select the color code and control V to copy that. And there we go. You've got your first color, and now it also puts it in to your document colors. Now you're going to click on the next one. Copy that curd click. Oye, plus sign control V. Upsy sorry. You have to first select the circle. Terribly sorry. Go click on the copy plus sign. Select the color code control V and then we go. It's did again. Circle. We're gonna grab the 3rd 1 Copy plus sign. Hover over it. Control the I'm just going to speed up the video while I finished the lost three. Okay, so now you done grabbing all the colors. One way to get all the hex Kurds is because you're great. Created a new palette era in your color picker. If you click on the drop down, all the pellets that you've created will stay there. It's so like you can just click on it and it'll give you the new colors so you can just rename each color palette that you create. And then you can have your hicks cards, your use saturation and value cards your RGB codes. You'll see more chi cards so that Oh, yes, so this is really a handy tool to have or what you can also do in what I'll show you quickly is if you now wanted Teoh. Go put it on your document because you want to save it and printed out. Then you can just go as we did before. Go copy it. Go to text, add a little body of text, click on it, don't click on it at a little body of text and control. V put it in there and just place a hash in front of it. Then you can go and you can create different forms. Change of funds and what not? But I'm not gonna do that right now, and then you can keep doing that. So go to your second color copy. Add a little body of text control V at the hash in front. I just click anyway, to de select it and place it underneath there, and you'll just carry on and continue doing that way so that that's one way that you can go at the color cards. I'm sure there's a lot of other ways that you can do it, and you can even now go at the seem like a cards if you want, because if you click on it, then it's all the right next to you to go type on. This is just one way of doing it, and now you can go download this document. As we said in the previous one, you can add your watermark to it if you want. Maybe edge a logo or anything you want, and then you just click on download. Choose. Let me just close this. Choose what you want to save it as a J pick or PdF or whatever. Download it and it'll download to your downers folder. Okay, so that is another way that you can create your own Kala pellets with images and have fun with it. You don't have to. You don't need the illustrator or Photoshopped filled with us, so this is also a fun way to do it. I open helps. Let's move on 24. Font Your Brand - Introduction: That's Tom. To move on to cheese in your funds. Choosing funds could be really fun and really frustrating all at the same time. The reason for this is there are just so me at. But we have our brainstorming keywords and we have made board. So we have a pretty good idea what we're looking for. You guys have to look for three farms for your brand, while 2 to 3 funds. One fund can be a script, funder, fancy fund or deputy fund, and it doesn't have to be very relatable. It could be the front that you used a lot or just a fun. Did you like Teoh highlights it in words. Think of when you wanna write a quite all right, something on your website and you want one were to be different than the rates that be that fancy fund Thank you would use. I'm going to use the script or the fancy fund for my logo and also for other elements in my breath. They wanted to look at a hitter or a title front. This fund would be also fancy by more eligible, something that's more readable. I'm going to go for a Serie Frontier and mine is still fun because it has little elements like the O's When you write a double. Oh, what type of double? Oh, it crosses over each other and the I has a doctor on. It ends in all caps but small caps. So that's the front that I'm using for my headache. And then for your better front, you want a front. It's very legible, because that's going to be for your lodge text areas. I only website or on your print documents, and people need to be able to read it. But some strain the eyes must be easy, readable both on screen and on Piper. All right, so that's all this 3005 that you're going to be looking for. Also, keep in mind when you're looking for front to look at the licenses. So if you're downloading from sight, a certain sites and it is a free fund says that it's free. Just make sure that it comes with commercialized license just to keep yourself safe. If it doesn't, you can just go to the author's website for me and buy it from them if it's for available for free on a personal licence. They only have commercial licenses available. But keep searching. There are sites out there, and I will show you that have free funds and free or cheap points and special So you can subscribe some newsletters, especially if that is something that you like to collect. I'm a bit of a junkie, so I have two months. All right, so there's other things I want to say. I'm going to show you how to search for funds. Then I'm going to show you a way to find funds on certain on the websites that I like. And then I will also show you how to download in any store funds. Should you not have to do that And then I was going to touch on may be using your own handwritten front. This would just be for decorative purposes. There there is away on a website called funds 11 dot com that you can create your own attack from it to our in front. But I'm going to just show you illustrate. I have to take your later that you've grown. Put it into illustrative image, trace it and then you can just make fun words from your literally. All right, let's get started 25. How and Where to Find Fonts: let me show you how and where I search for funds. So the first way is good old Google. So here I took one of my key words and I searched for women's ical funds and it came up with 1,920,000. Now your 20,000 results all right in 26 seconds. Right? And the first on it came up with was for a 141 free, whimsical funds in 1000 fronts dot com. And when you search on Google, it will come up with the front marketplaces first. So in this case, it's 1000 and one funds fun space. And then it also came up with a creative market front spring in my friends. All right, so when you click on one of these eso like I clicked on the 1st 1 then it takes you straight to the website, and then you can see all the whimsical fronts, all the funds that have been attacked with the word whimsical so that Google could find it , And then you could even goes further and searchable, handwritten or headlines a regular, playful It's a try, etcetera. All right, then a second way on Google is when you search for year. I used elegant funds, but instead of clicking on this 1st 1 that says from front squirrel so you know France Girl is going to take it to a website, which is really great. But you first want to sort of see what the the funds look like. So I clicked on images. When you go on images, it brings up all images off the different fronts. Now be way when you click on images, it might not always take you to the source off the funds over to where the fronts are being sold. It chewed in most cases, but sometimes it doesn't. So just beware of that. So I clicked on or I like this hasty immigrant script, and then you just click on Visit the site, and that should take you in to the site where it is being sold. In this case, it's front bundles dot mate. All right, so a couple of other ways to search for it on Google Year. I was very specific about the type of fun, so I said pretty so in Serie fonts. So I knew that I didn't want to reefs on the funds. I wanted a readable fund, so I said Pretty, you know, So on Sarif. And then in this case, I said pretty Serie fonts and same something also came up with readable funds. But now they have so reefs, and in another way it's just a type in fancy funds. Or again, just the keyword on thanks. He gets used in fronts a lot because some fronts are really fancy and like you can see these funds all really aren't you're not going to use them in your paragraphs or in large pieces of text. You are going to just use them for nice words to stand out or headlines or things like that . Of course, I also like to use Pinterest to search for fronts. The nice thing about Pinterest is that it will come up with lots of images for different funds, but it will also come up with images off people who have written block boasts about a different funds and also front bearings. So a nice way to search areas test also to use your keywords and to see what comes up and it'll show you can already then see what they look like. And it might also come up with free funds for commercial use, like in this one at the bastes refunds, all different things. And the other thing that's nice is if you actually search for front bearings. So elegant front bearings they took my computer works quickly. Now it should come up with a lot of results for you to actually pay fronts. If you better thing to do this like you're it says these one pairings gorgeous and modern, beautiful and clean. So when you snow go and look on the spin and to read it, then you will find all the names for these funds any way to find them so that you can buy them? You're so that's a different way to look for funds here I searched for whimsical funds and again, I just also searched for sorcery funds. In this case, lots of lots of different Serie funds. And what's nice about it is this. The funds name will probably be there, like, in this case, the base to refunds. Is this a really nice day? And then I also served searched for sensory funds and once again it comes up with all the names, and it's really easy for you to see. All right, so that's another way that I used to search for Fuck's. So although I really like using Google and Pinterest to search for funds, and that is really what got me to where I am today is by searching on Google and Ventress because there's just something for my much information out there. I know I have a pretty good idea off which websites to find fronts that I can trust on. So the first few I want to show you are just the front websites. I don't use them too often because I have some others that I'll show, You know, that I really do prefer. But I just want to show you, in any case, because you can get a lot of nice free funds for commercial use on your But I just want to also reiterate that you need to check the license when you downloaded. A lot of people make this mistake, and you really shouldn't. I also made the mistake, so please learn from my mistakes. All right, so the 1st 1 is front squirrel and you'll find a lot of fronts on front squirrel from free to paid, and they've got lots of deals. So fun. Squirrel is the 1st 1 that I would recommend searching for different fronts. Use your keywords and see what you can find. A. The next one I want to show you is the fund. So, yeah, you can also search in the search bar for different keywords. But you're at the top. They have a lot of key words for you that you can go look at different fronts and find something that works for you. Maybe that you can have the key word. One of the key words that you've written down and you can go look at that. Then when you find the front that you like, you can just see what the licenses normally, when it says free for personal use. If you can donate or you could buy it, you could just click on that link. Then you can either download to the author or buy it from the author itself. So that's another thing to look at and make sure that you've got the right licenses. Now one of my favorites to get funds from his front bundles doesn't it a fun bundles doesn't have bundles exactly like they say. They have different fronts as well, and I have a lot of free funds. So if you go there, click on free funds. You can download all their free funds all their funds that they have available for free. It's normally also comes with a commercial license. Sometimes it's just not the full front. In other words, it might just be the main front, not the front. Not that I tele sized one. No, not the bold one or something like that. So just be aware of that. And what they also have, which I really like is $1 deals. So if you set your push notifications or you subscribe to the newsletter is you'll get a notification to say that they are having a deal, a $1 deal. And then it's normally around 15 fronts that go up for sale on that day, and it starts at a certain time, and it aims at a certain time. But in that time frame, there are 50 thes 15 funds, 1500 funds. I think I speak under correction, but I think 1000 500 front of each of these fronts are available to buy at $1 each, so you could get the 15 funds for $15 in that time. So that's also something I really like. The next one is pixel surplus, and I also have a lot of freebies, and I also have to your Vandals or lots of Vandals that you confined fronts off at fronts on. And you should also get a with these. With these bundles, you normally do also get a commercial license. One of my favorites to use is the hungry Jay Pig and design Court cuts. Now they work on the same principle. There are more at birth marketplaces for design assets, and every two weeks they come out with any new design bundles. So they get a whole bunch off different assets from different designers that they put together at a hugely discounted price. I've bought a few, and I first bought from design cuts long ago, but I must say I was like hungry joy because the style there is a little bit different, but on the east, the website you can get any any design estates and this guy's you cannot go to funds, and you can search for the different fronts that you are looking for both on hungry J Pick and on design cuts. The other thing that I also like about them both is that they have some freebies on the hungry. I pick the free me. Freebies are constantly changing. Often they change often. So in this case there's a weekly freebie and I free front, free front bundle and then off the design cuts in the hungry I pick the next one that I like is creative market. The reason I like creative market is year. You're selling or buying directly from the designer. They also a marketplace for different design, shukan by lots of designs from you. But yet you buy directly from the designers, so you would also go to funds and you can choose whichever fund you are looking for and scroll through them and year you buy and you supporting designers. All right, so there's other places that I look for funds in the ways that I look for fronts. I open helps you next. I want to show you in case you don't know how to download and how to install a front 26. How to Download and Install Fonts: Now let me show you how to download and install a fund on your computer. Just in case you're not sure. The first time I wanted to download and install a front, it just didn't make any scenes to me. So here you go. I went to Pixel Surplus and I went to the freebie section, and I chose this restless free breast brush script. And yet you can see that it is free for personal and commercial unusual use, which means I shouldn't have any problem to use it in any of my broader projects, including my lager. And it's a really nice fund, and it comes with all the letters, not 100% sure if it comes with a little the lefts and things that you might need. I need to be quite careful when I buy in front or when I use a front because on my name on my E, I have two little dots and some of the funds stone to come with it. However, I am going to download this fun because I do like it and I might be able to use it in something else that doesn't necessarily have my name So how you do that is, then you just type in you name, sir. Name and your email, and then it says free download. So I'm already subscribed to them in any guise. But then I can just click your to download their brush, corrupt the restless brush script, and then once it's open, I can either go to my Downloads folder and it's there. Then I can double click on it. Or I could You could have just clicked on it. Yeah, and it should open it now once it's open. This really confused me. The first time I saw this, I was like, What do you do with it anyway? So what you do is you just click install, and once you've installed it, it comes up with a little sorry that went on to my other screen. But a little thingy that's a little block proper block that say's installing funds and it disappears in me a straight offer. It's been installed, and then you can class it, and that's it, that is, I install a front you might have to restart your computer. In certain cases, I don't usually need to to see it in your word processing programs. But once you go back in, it should be right there. All right, Next up, I'm going to show you one of my favorite tools when I am looking for fronts. 27. How to use wordmark.it: let me show you one of my favorite tools When it comes to choosing fronts, I really better when I'm in a program and I'm visit creating another design or I'm trying to do a branding project or whatever it might be. And I'm now having to look for funds. I'm not 100% sure or or off downloaded a couple of funds, and I want to choose from them. But there's no means. I have to take it and I have to copy it. And I have to face that. And I have to go to my characters and I have to choose another farmed and have to see what it looks like. I have to come to repeat the process all over again. It's time consuming. You can't remember what the front was. You have to keep clicking around, and it's just annoying. So a couple of years ago, I found a website called Sorry word mark dot it. I use it quite often, So whenever I have a product project that I'm working on, I would use this because word mark that it actually takes all if all the fronts that are installed on your computer and shows you what they're going to look like in whatever word you type a word or phrase. So in this case, I want to go search for a lover fund for my logo. So my so my name read Norton. I pressed enter on my keyboard, and then we go. Now it shows me all the funds that are installed on my computer. Now, I already know that I want a fund that is more script and handwritten and littered. I don't want it to be perfect, but I do want it to be illegible. Sort off. So I know sort of what I'm looking for now the nice thing about this, it can also be they could be a lot of fun. So you aren't 100% sure what you're looking for. But now you can go ahead and you can click on all the fronts that you think you might like , and here I just want to show you what I means in the previous video about the gloves not being right. So not all the funds come with, like the dots on the eat, like in my name, for instance. So I also have to be very careful about that. All right, so I'm going to scroll through yet and I'll meet you back in a few seconds to show you what I do off to this. So now you've scrolled down through the hole off all your friends, and you can definitely scroll up and down a couple more times to make sure that you haven't missed anything. But once you sure that you've selected all the ones that you might like to use for you for your project, you can go click up here on filter selected. Now, what's going to happen? It's going to give you this preview off all the fonts that you've chosen. So I know to say pattern and what I've chosen. But I also want to be able to see it on paper. So what I can do as well as I can save the image and then I can print it at So once I've saved it, I normally just go back and I go print it out. But I want to also show you how to search now for when you've got a paragraph to search for . So I just go in search for a dummy text generator so you could just say Laura Ipsum text generator. Or in this case, that came up with blind text generator. And then you can choose one. I actually found one that's got English words, which is nice, so you can really check if it's going to work. Then I control see to copy it and then onward, Mark. I go going to go back to the beginning so you can see it's down, noted the PNG for me. So that's in my downloads folder, and I can then go back a little bit later and go print it all rights and I'm going to go back. Oh, sorry. We should maybe just have refreshed. So here I've got it again. Now, instead of having my name typed in a I want to know you look for my paragraph front, so I'm going to control the and it's a whole bunch, but its fine. You just click enter and then you go. Now it comes up with the paragraphs and at the bottom Here. All the funds and what's really nice now is you can really go see on your screen if it's readable. So, like this one is really readable. That's one is a bit Bolden. A bit contrast it for me. I'm battling with it, but you should from your notes and from your brainstorming keywords and everything. No sort of what you like, So then you can go and just scroll through it, and once again, you can just click on the ones that you like. Now just a warning. When you click on these ones and you finally, maybe you've clicked on city or 40 of them, and you finally click on. Your fault is selected and you save your image. That's all great. But then, when you want to print it out, it's probably going to use about 15 pages to print it out. If you've used. If you've chosen city just because it's a larger piece of text, so do you. Keep that in mind If you don't want to use up so much ankle so many pieces of paper. Just be careful or maybe done printed. Maybe just read it and then check on your computer screen. I prefer to print it out because then I could look at it over and over, and I actually make notes on the paper with my pains, but that just that is just my preference. Now you'll do the same thing with your with your head of front or your title fund. You can just go type in something like this is a headline or whatever. Let's see. So I'm actually just going to refresh this page. So just a quick example. This is a headline and then press enter and then you can see there already. That is a very nice headline, and then you again. You can just scroll. There's another one Algerian, so you can scroll through all of your funds, and you can click on the ones that you really like that go with your your whole feeling of your brand. You should. You should see a pattern in the ones that you choose because off your keywords and your mood board, you won't go for something that is too different from your other other to that, you are choosing eso. It's quite an organic way off finding funds instead of looking at what the eyes look like and what the ease look like And is the baseline the same? And is this the same? Having a more organic feel to it and actually choosing colors or sorry, choosing funds that go with the feeling that you want for your brand. You should find that whatever you choose in the end will match regardless. All right. So I would then say to you, Go ahead and use the word marked out it and go search on different places for funds. Go down there different fronts and then use word mark to go find your funds. Next, I'm just going to show you a quick way. An illustrator If you've drawn some letters and you just want to use some of them on some of your graphics on your website off graphic social media graphics how you can if you have illustrator go and victories that that takes and put it on a graphic. 28. Use Your Own Lettering: now you might want to use your own littering in your graphics or in your low logo, and there is definitely a way to do this. So first hearing to write all the letters down on a piece of paper, preferably in a black pin and then scan it in at approximately 600 db I if if you can go higher than do that, but it should be fine. If it's in black and white, you can even go lower. It shouldn't be a problem. All right, then you go and file place and you selected. Now I quickly made thes laters to in two minutes, just to show you what I mean by this. So it's by no means perfect, but it's something, all right, so then you'll go and you'll open up your image. Trace. I've already got it open. If you don't, you got a window and image trace, so make sure it's elected. Go and choose. You can either choose sketched out or black and white logo. I'm going to choose black and white logo, and you can just say OK, because it's just going to It's just telling you it's going to take a while, and you wait for it to do its thing as with everything else and it'll come up like that. Now that looks pretty good to me. If you happy with it, you can just press expand. If not, you can go change or three sort threshold. And it might go a little bit darker for you. Or you can go even advanced and then select any of the other features they So I'm pretty happy with us. So I'm going to click on expand and then we go. So all of them have been victory rised. Now you can go while it's selected and say control shift G two on group it, then these select They select everything by clicking anywhere else on the or board select only the background, okay, And then go deal it. And now you should have all the different letters in different places. All right now, however, you might in some places have a problem where it won't all move together because it's not all group together. So in that what I would do now is I would just go and take each later and just group each letter together just to make it easier on myself. All right, So once you've done that, you can now do something with those. Laters. If you want to change something on any of the laters, you can just let's say we want to fix up that point day so I'll just zoom into the ISS, and then you can just grab your direct selection toe the white arrow to, and now you can either delete an anchor point. I'm going to try doing that. So I'm going to click on my minus, and I'm going to click on that one, too. See if that s doesn't just smooth out a little bit. Don't click on a handle. Click on an anchor. There we go. And that smooth it out a little bit, and it looks a little bit better. Here we go. I actually prefer No, I'm just going to fall alone. Oh, I like that Right. And you can do this with each of these. Laters to just smoothing out and make it better. Like in this chorus case you can. I'll select the the lead anchor point and I'll just try and tied it up. All right, But that's now going way too far into it. So I'm just going to show you how now are You can now use some of these laters, for instance, on a graphic, right? So let's I've taken a graphic off Jonathan a graphic, and I've even made a little color palette from it. And now I want to write the word fun next to it. So I will grab my If I just want to make sure that it's groups. I'll just copy that over there and I will grab my you group it control C control, beat copy Arctic paste, and then all do the same with my in which I should have fixed but didn't and then control copy. Oops and control V. Okay. And then I'll select all of them and all just control. Copy and control the device. The money. All right now it doesn't look so great, Yates. So what I'll do is I'll just change the size of all of them, the height specifically to be the same. So and this goes, I'm going to go for 100 pixels at first to see what that looks like. And that's probably isn't the right word for this image, but it's the base. That could do right now, Not very creative on the fly. Hey, we got okay. And then I'd like to change the color to maybe this lighter Collier and I will put them all there. And then I will distribute them vertically vertical distribute center. And they're all gonna go there. So and I notice, you know, that can go quite a bit bigger. So I'm going to select all of them or seeing every one of them again. And I'm going to make the about three times as big. So I'm gonna go for 300 pixels and again, 300 pixels. This is all trial and error, Especially if you don't really have a plan. What you want to do with that? But this is just to show you that you have options and I'll select them all the holding and shift and clicking on each of them and then distribute saying there and the year now you've got fun. Now they'd say you want Teoh. I would. I think I want to move the If down at 10. And now I'm going to select them all again. I'm gonna control copy and control paced in front is control. If and then I went Teoh first, I'm going to say no full. And then I'm going to change the stroke, too. One of the darker blues, but not the darkest one. Okay, And then I want I'll click somewhere on the or board just to go over it. And then I'm going to meet moving around a little bit to see what effect it has, and that's quite cool. So that's something else you can do, and you can really just play around with it. You can maybe even go select them all, control, copy, control beef, be full control and pasting back, and then maybe even do the same. But maybe do like a different color could just use this. And now it's got sort of a drop shadow behind it. So this is just a very, very quick way that you can play around with your own littering to create funky images. So I would now go file, stay for weight if I'm using it on the Web. So let's say this. This one would work on Instagram, and this will come up and you can just out choose J pick because that's fine and all trees are optimized because there's no text on your. The text is well thought out Click, save and then, oh, wait for it because my computer sometimes crashes. I'll just go save it on my desktop for now and I'll say fun graphic for Instagram and safe . And then we go and I would also then also go and save this and this both as an illustrator document so that you can keep reusing it. And that's that. That is how you victory rise your own lettering so that you can use it for Fantagraphics or even for your lager. Okay, now that is it for this section. Now it's up to you. Now you can go choose your funds and have fun with it, so keep your work workbook candy, Make notes as you go. Go search for funds using Pinterest using Google using any of the sites we looked at. Download some free ones. If you find something that you really like, maybe by it taste it and then go use word mark two. Make sure that you choose the right front or choose to to make it easier for you to choose a different front. But you don't have to, obviously. And then also, if you want to play around with your handler drink, go do that. So go have fun with it and I will see you in the next section. We were going to be speaking about graphics and photography and icons and shapes full our brand. 29. Photography and Graphics for Your Brand - Introduction: the next thing will look at is out photography on graphics, icons and shapes. Now it doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to have all of those elements in your brain. It's just good to consider all of them. So I'm going to show you where to find graphics were to find photography. But I just Could you talk about what we have to think about this? So you've got your mood board, and you know exactly what your brand must feel like. You've got your funds in your culture colors, so you really have a good idea off the feel of your brand. Now, when you go search for your photography that you want to use your site or examples of it, at least make sure that there is photography or those. Those images match the feel and the look that you're going for. So, for instance, if you have a very soft and feminine brand and you want to go look for images like that, look for soft images on things that are and things that match the colors in your brain. If you're going to take your first, that is great. Maybe set up a space in your house or in a studio in your office. Make sure there's lots of natural light. If you have a studio set up, that's great. But if you don't make sure there's lots of natural light from the window and you can take a drive there and there are a lot of classes until shape about taking photos for your block or for your social media to learn from. All right. Then, when it comes to your graphics, you have to think about your graphics, especially what you're going to be using for your lager and other elements in your website and a new print design. You can go search for graphics on under a lot of off sites that sell graphics or graphic packs, and I'll show you some of those. All you can create your own graphics. Safer, a designer or an illustrator. Obviously, your greater if you're like me, you probably gonna want a few graphics for your brand because my friend is very image baby or designed a week because I make my own designs. So I've chosen my funds and I've chosen my colors, and it's all very soft photography wise for my block. I'll use soft images. But when it passed the graphics, I'm only going to have one or two graphics that I'll be using for my life. Okay, then checks and icons there. I'm talking about what if you want, like a watercolor backgrounds, or you want flat icons for your batons on your website and things like that. So that old things to think about when you go search for this, make sure you a couple of ways to do this or to search at least and find it. And I must going to show you how I create the graphic that I'm going to use in my logo. Make it started. 30. Where to find images and graphics: before you start searching for images and graphics and those things for your brand, it's important to first sit down and Michael list off what they'll be used used for, very similar to the colors and the funds. You don't want to sit and spend hours looking for the perfect graphic. If it isn't really something that you need So first think. What will these graphics be used for? If you want a specific pattern? Is it for a background on your website? Is it for a business card? What is it that you're looking for? If you want a specific image, is it for a block post? You know, so ask yourself questions. What you'll be using these graphics full. Maybe you want a graphic that could be used as a divider on instead of lines on your websites and maybe on your print design on your brochures to break up things. Or maybe you want funny cartoons, acute cartoons or something like that. Maybe you are looking for flat icons, so first think of what you're going to be using them for. I won't be using any graphics or downloading in graphics or images, for that matter. For mine because I'm going to be. If I need images or graphics, I'll be drawing them myself. And what I'm going to do with images for photography is I will be using mock ups. So I have a few mark ups which I bought on design cuts, So my photos will be made using these images. Also my social media graphic. So, all of all of my graphics, all of my photography, will be made using the's mock ups. And that includes my social media graphics or my social media photography. But a couple of prices to look for things is the same as with with your funds, you can first go search creative market where once again you can a support other designers and you've got furthers. Yeah, there are so many. And what's nice is it's also broken up into different types and in with graphics. You've got icons and illustrations and patterns and product mark cups as well, which we'll talk about in a second in a in a different section off this close, and then also templates this. You don't have to really worry about it the moment, but it might be nice for you to go look at some social media thing bloods and that to see what they look like. Especially if there's something that you have an idea off in your mind that would also give you an idea as to what type of graphics and what type of photography to look for. And then again, I would suggest looking on the hungry. Jay big dot com You just go to the shop and then you can search for graphics for photos, templates all of those things exactly like on creative Market. And in the last one, his own design cuts, and they again you conceptual graphics, templates and everything else. So there's other three are suggest using. Also make sure that the licenses all commercial licenses so you are allowed to use them for your branding and maybe in your products if you have products and then when it comes to photography, you can use free sites like picks, obey and even and splash. There are many out. If you go Google, you will find many once again haven't idea. So I'm very drawn, drawn to the flowery theme. So if I was going to use photos on my block persists and if I do later on, change my mind. I might use photos like this one off the roses because it's a light image and it's a lot of pink and it's soft. So that would be something that I would consider, and then the same goes for and splash. So also, just make sure that it's commercial licenses. And, um so before you use it on your block that you know that you're using the right right license and then you get your paid photography sites is shut, the stock is one of them, and Adobe stock is another one, and yeah, also, you could find a lot better quality that because the people who have to also submit photos , you get judged before, and you know you have to apply before you can submit anything you contrast, upload and and then you go. They have to actually apply to to have their photos on these sites. So you get really good photos and also with the correct licenses, and everybody won't be using your photos, you know, like on the free side to have a better chance of somebody else using the same photo, then on these paid sites we actually paying for a photo and they have a huge library. So there's other places I suggest starting your search, but keep in mind what they'll be used for. And if you don't need graphics and really images because you're going to be taking your own or making your own, then my own means you can skip this and you can just start creating your own images. And just make sure that in your brand style guide or in your notes for now, you write down what it is that you need to look at when you are searching or what types of images and graphics you'll be using. 31. Using Downloaded Graphics and Making your Own: now make me show you how to work with graphic situ that you downloaded from different sites . And also, if you've drawn another graphic, how you can or your own graphic are you can go about working with that. So, a couple of years ago, I bought a vector bundle from design cuts, and these were some of the elements that came in this bundle. Now, obviously these elements wanted my colors, and they just don't look like what I'm going to be using. But let's say I like this rate. For instance, I would go and copy that one and placed it on another art board now already chosen a different color palette which are designed or which created a while back. Now, keeping the selected I would go to the re color artwork to, and now I can use this color palette that I created, and I can now use that and recover this artwork and see what I like so I could go scroll through it. That's quite nice. SARC It's okay and then you just know. But let's I want to try a different one. I could just control copy control V and go back to the recall order to and then just selected again. And it seemed maybe there's a bit of a gray that's quite nice. Oh, that's quite nice. And it's okay and Internet. And let's say then I would like to put my initials or something in there. Then I could go and grab the type tool, type my initials and then go change the fund to the one that I chose, which would I'm not 100% done choosing it. But for the moment I am going with that one. Then I could increase the size. I would also go type and create outlines. It's just easier to work with and in holding shift to restore e scaler to resize it and then choose a color that works. So that's quite nice. So this is just something quick and different that you could do. I would go transport, arrange and bring to front so that you could do something like that, or and they you've great used graphics that you've downloaded or bought on the Internet and used it with your own colors and your own funds or the front city board, and you made it your own Now, which could also do is you could maybe grab one off thes bicycles and God put that on your dartboard, and now you're going to do the same thing. Holding shift when you re size. Most are just going to group, but and I can do the same thing. So but that's selected. Go to the re color or rectal and select that color palette. Now I know that I want the wheels to be that green, but I'm not 100% sure about the bike. Oh, that's interesting. And then you can scroll through until you find one that you like and that you want to work with. So let's say we choose that one. I'm not actually going to be using these. I don't know why I'm so precious about it Now. I would go and choose a couple off these florals that also came in the same Bandel and do exactly the same with that. I'll go control, copy, control, the It's just out so I can resize all of these, cause they I want to put them all in the basket off the bicycle. But now, first I was going to recover them. So recon in order to and then go click on it. I'm just gonna put it, Yes, on my sock and see. And it's scroll through randomly changing them until we find something that we like. And then you can arrange this in the boss Good. And we just make it a little bit bigger. I think it ended up a bit small. So now you can arrange this. I'm first going to just keep it in front and the love arranged it, and then I can send it to back to look like it's inside the basket. The guy you created actually just going to be there to say, Arrange and bring to front. And there you've created a new graphic for whatever you want to use it for, So this is just a example. Now, if you've drawn your own images or your own, you're any your own images. There are a couple of ways that you can go about doing this. The first way is pretty much the same as when we victories down fronts. He's scan it in a good quality. He opened up any image trace and then you go and black and white logo wait for it to do it . That looks good. Expand and control shift G. Oops. Select the background the lead and group that and then you can do the same with this one. Right for it. Expand release on group it to lead the background. And then you can group this again. And now what you can do is you can actually recover this. But first I will go transform, reflect And then I wanted to reflect on the vertical and that's final. Copy it, Holden Schefter and just move it. Do what you want it in our group, this whole. Now let's zoom into that. Now we've got this lovely little butterfly that we could use so I would select the whole thing. Now our press K for my pain packet tool, and I'll just go and click on one of my colors. And now I can full my butterfly with the colors of my choosing, and this is one way off doing that. Another way is by scanning us in or drawing in pencil and then using the blood brush tool to create to actually draw the different things that you that you want. So there's a couple of ways to do this. So this is just me showing you a quick way for a fairly quick way that you can create your own graphics in illustrator and quickly recover them and just want to quickly show you also when I'm Dan Sorry, you just quickly finish here. All right, so when you done, I'm just going to leave the outline for now. Now you'll see it's got this funny bounding box now Teoh, release that Or two. When you 100% sure off the color, you can just click on expand and now it's gone straight back to it again. So it's just a little bit smaller. All right, so that is another way of doing that. You can also then obviously go control copy control G. And then you control V. Sorry. And then you can go and recover it with that same color palette to see if oops with that same color palette to see if there's maybe something else that you like better. Okay, so there's are a couple of a couple of ways that you could work with your own graphics and with somebody else's graphics that you've bought in. Illustrator, I hope this helps you. I'll see you in the next part of this. Listen 32. Using Mock Ups: before we move on to creating lagers and looking at different types of logos. I just wanted to quickly show you what I mean by Mark Ups. So a few years ago, I bought a markup Bandel from design cuts, and it really has served me while the last couple of years. So I want to use the image that I created for this course as an example. So this was the original image that I downloaded from design cuts. You can make your own images, but I desire decided for the sake of ease. I just wanted to use a pre made one. Now, how it works, if you're not sure, is it comes with everything, effects and all of that. So it's all pre laid out for you, and then you find the objects and each object that can change will have a smart object. So, for instance, the notebook you can open the notebook is that one? Yes, And then you can click on a smart object, and then you can actually change it, so you can just say okay and then you can ya go file and place the document in the Let's see if I can find the one I actually used for this. If we go, Teoh is the notebook image I created. So I checked first on the sides to make sure that I create this the right size to check that you go to image, image size and it tells you so. I created this image in the exact right size so that I knew the dimensions were right. So then I would say Okay and they would just switch the bottom layer off and then you can just close it and say yes, cause now it's saving those changes and then you'll see that it'll change that cover wonderful. And that you can do for each of these objects. Yes. So I created this was a drawing I made myself So you can see that this was a Mondal A that I actually created from another skill she claws year I wrote a thing that said, You are awesome like a posted. This is from the workbook is the first worksheet. This is just a image that I liked. And then I decided to change the color off the glasses and the stapler, and I also changed the color of the scissors and then, But I also did was I replaced the background, so I just put a different background in year for it to look different. So these are the types of things that you can do with mark up images. The other thing that you can do is actually create your own images. So what's nice about this one is in this the file that we've downloaded. We get all these different objects so I could start a new document and then bring in all these objects and put later, put them down exactly in the way that I like and then replace everything and change the colors as an hour I choose. And in that way I cannot stay consistent with my brand and how I created. And I couldn't even create some templates that I can use over and over for my social media , graphics and my block posts and anything else that I might need. So this was just a quick overview on how market markups work and why I decided, or that what your why I decided to use it just because it's easier and I can do all these fun things with it all right. Next, we're going to move on to logos, and then we're going to put our style guide together. I'll see you in the next place in 33. A Logo for Your Brand - Introduction: Now it's time to create your logo. In this section will be looking at the different types of logos. They look at what you need to consider before designing a logo, and then I'll show you how to use templates to design your logo. And I'll also walk you through the steps will take and how I think about it. When I designed a logo, let's he thought. 34. Types of Logos: before you get into designing your logo, I just want you to think about and consider a few things. First, I want you to look at this image and just see the types of Largo's that you get. So in this image, they say abstract mark mascot, lager combination, Mark Emblem logo later Mark, pictorial mark and word mark and let your mind go and think what types of Largo's will work with your brand name your business name and with the message that you trying the same and then also consider the following things. So first, consider the different orientations that your dirty needle are going to be in. So, you know, do you want a longer, longer like a landscape type logo? Or do you want it to be a little bit more square around so that it can fit into squares? Do you wanted a in a portrait orientation? So I think of the different orientations that you might like and that you might want it and then ask yourself way. Will it be used? So what do you use it? Only in your website? Will you use it on your business cards? Will you also use it on your social media in your print designs. So where will it be used? Now, go back to the question. What are you drawn to and what do you like? So before you start creating your logo, you have to think about what it is that you drawn to always keep your mood board with you. So what are you drawn to and what do you like? And then ask us out these questions and then ask yourself again, what am I drawn to? And what about what do I like? Because I say, do this and jump around like this because I want you to keep going back to what you like. It's very easy for us to get lost in this thing about Oh, it has to look like this or it has to look like that. But it's very, very important, or I believe it's very, very important that your logo must be something that you love. If you love it, you're going to keep it. If you don't, you're not going to keep it, and you're going to keep changing it and then ask yourself the question. How many different versions do you need now? there's ties in with the 1st 2 questions, which is different orientations and where will it be used? So if you know you know, where will it be used and what different orientations? Then you can ask yourself again, how many different versions do I need? So if you're going to be using it and a lot of different places, you might need a lot of different versions now. And that's not to say that you can't have that. In my case, for instance, I have my name, which is create Copthorne, and I know that I want just my name. But I do know that I want one logo mark or want picked one picture to use, and I am at the moment I'm very drawn to a feather, So I'm thinking of creating a feather so I can use my name in the front that I chose the script front or their hundreds in front that I chose. And then I can use the picture of a feather with my colors. And then I can also maybe see if I can create something where it's my name and the feather so I can create three different versions to use in different and places or four different things. So consider those things and think about that, and then move on to the next Laysan, where I'm going to show you a couple of different ways that you can go about creating your own logo. 35. Using Logo Templates: before you get integrating her own fund. I just want to quickly talk about logo templates. Now a lot of people will say, Don't use longer templates. I think to disagree, because template could just help you get started. It doesn't mean you have to use the template exactly as it is, but it could definitely help you get started. So this time, But I downloaded long ago. I can't even remember from way have never actually used it. But what I like about this template is just the fact that it's got this vintage field to it . So whenever I ever climbed that wants something like this, I could just go back and sort of get inspired by it and just see, you know, get a starting point. This really helps me. And then another one that I downloaded or that I bought a couple of years ago was this one also from design cut, and it's now a little bit more hand drawn, and it's got, um, or organic feel to it on. You could also, in this panel you could get the color elements. Okay, so I've copied to loggers over on, just added my name to it and just some details. And then I also opened one of the color palettes that I created previously, so I could now play around with the color palettes so I would select it and then grab my color ballot or grab my re color artwork to and then choose the color palette. And then I could just random knee go through it. I like this way because it just it makes it easier. It makes you think off color combinations that you never would have. Now, obviously, if I was going for something, I would probably stop year because I love the pink and the blue. But sometimes it's good to carry on because now look there. There's the gray on the blue, which is also really nice, and they you can come up with a whole bunch off different combinations off your colors with a nice logo. And this is a good starting point for me to get started on my leg. I So let's play around with this one as well. So re color artwork to click on. Yeah, and it see what it does a little bit bright for me, that flower, but it is nice so it's a good starting point, but I do think I prefer the top one. So initially when I copied them over, I could I thought I would prefer this one. It shows you All right, so this is a good starting point. So I'm going to push this one to the side for now because I want to work a little bit on this one. So I'm going to just de selected or on group it. Sorry. And then I want to just see archives. So I've got that front days I'm gonna control copy and control V, and then I'm going to control copy in control V, the core Thune. And I want to see if I can create something that is sort of next to each other, Um, as well as with this illustration underneath it, and then maybe just the flower somewhere. Maybe the illustration can come so sort of a combination between the other one and this one . And this is just a way to start playing around with different ideas. So I'm not crazy about this, but it's already it's an idea, and it's something to play around with. So this is why I say Try out template. If you see a template that you like, you could even down it free templates. As long as you're not going to use them exactly like they are, you could use them just as a starting point just to get you going and to help you along, especially if you have no idea what you really want. So that's my two cents on pre made logo's or template logo's. Um, Open helps a little bit, and I'm going to in the next listen show you are. I go about trying to design my own logo. I might not get to the final E eight, but it's a start. 36. Create Your Own Logo: Now I want to show you how I go about starting to create my logo. So I've got my mood board. I've got my inspiration. I found a feather illustration that I really like, So I decided not to use a different illustration for now. I'm going to try and work with this further. For now, I like the fact that it's a little bit cool, colorful. So it just gives a little different feel to what I initially thought and after hated the color palette from this faith, the feather image, which is the image that the whole time that I've been working through, all of this has been going through my mind. And I have chosen the front that I want to use for my logo. Right, Dick? Right here. So you're I started playing around with some some stuff, so I've recall it. The favor? Firstly Sorry are I used the re color artwork tool and I used my ballot. Yeah, whichever also created and saved. And I recall it a couple of feathers and I think the middle one is my favorite at the moment. Although I am very drawn to the one on the right as well. So all three of them are really good for me. And then I wrote my name just in the front that I chose, and I just put the failure on top. Now, I'm not entirely happy with that for the moment, so I might actually just remove the feather. And that would be my one logo, which would just be my name. But I still carry on playing with it. Now. What I'll do is I'll just carry on trying different things, so I'll top at my name again. But this time I'm going to do my name and my surname separate. And now what I'll try and do is I'll actually try and move my name and my surname to see how they can fit with each other. And that should be quite interesting, especially with this front as it make the T and the H and the sea make like this little nuclear almost way my name could almost fit in. So that is already something that I quite like. And this might even make it possible for me to add the feather at an angle. Yeah, and if I'm not entirely happy with the feather there. I could always reflect it or rotate it, and I can always re color it. Okay, so, yeah, this I really like. So I think I might keep this. So I'm going Teoh. Just select it and go ahead and group it. And now continue to rework this. I'll maybe do something with Justin are and and my c off my surname and I will keep reworking it until I find combinations and ideas that I really like. OK, so I'm going to keep working on this for my logo. You've got a couple of ideas to work on now for your logo. I really hope that all of this helps you go ahead and try and create your own logo. Don't be too precious about it. Just try and do what you feel. You can always keep re working at it as you go and I will see you in the next section where we are going to take all these elements and put them together in our style Guide 37. Create Your Style Guide - Introduction: you collected your inspiration. You created your mood board. He searched for your funds. He said. Your color. Such photographs and images even started creating a longer. Now it's time to put all these elements together. Your brand style guide. In this section, you can choose to design a digital or a physical style guide. If you just decide to do it digitally. That's great. If you decide to do physical one that's also use your imagination and just create something beautiful. Remember to keep all the information in your style guide. I will show you in the next this and how I set that up and how I decide what goes on work page. However, I want you to be imaginative and create your own style guide. So I will be uploading mine to the project section once I'm finished. But I'm not going to be finishing it in the list for you or so have fun with this, and it's thought 38. Create a Digital Style Guide: Now you've reached the last section off this class and this is the fan section. This is where you take all the hard work, and you're going to be putting it together in a brand style guide. In this lesson, I'm going to quickly show you how I plan my brand style guide and our start putting it together. I'm not going to be putting together the whole style guard because it does take a while to do it. But I just want to be to show you how to get started. Also, I don't want to show you how I put my whole style guide together because I want you to go ahead and have your own ideas. Ah, well, upload my finished style guide to the project section so that you can go look at it. But I want you to I have your own ideas and decide for yourself what you're going to do to do it so you can do it in different ways. I've chosen to do it an illustrator. That's just my choice. But you could do it in photo shop. You could do it in words. You could do it in Cannes, Va. you can do it physically, like I said in the introduction video, so you can make a journal or a scrapbook. It's really up to you what you choose to do. Be creative, do what suits your you and your brand and just have fun with it. So I would suggest having a right or sitting about sitting aside about 10 pages. You're going to start with a front page, and that's why you'll probably do lost because you're going to put your logo and maybe a couple of elements in the and then next up you're going to do your index page. This is just what you say. Page one is for this. Page two is for that. Just so you know where everything is doesn't have to be fancy. It could just be there. Then, on the third bite, you can put your foundation answers and any notes that you have, So, yeah, you're going to go back to your workbook and go put the important stuff that you want to in your brand style guide things that you want to remember and to want to look back on when you want to be reminded about how your brain must look when you're creating your images or when you creating products and what message you are sending two people. All right, So once you've done with that, you're going to also put on this page your keywords be creative. With that, you could just type it out. Or you can make fun little graphics, whether put your keywords in and they next, you're going to put your mood board on. So if you created a physical mood board, you can scan it in and put it on there or just added into your style guide. If you're making a physical one, you could If you made a mood wall, you could add photos off that. Or if you create a digital mood boards, you can go at that. Or you could create a whole new one worth the images that you initially used. So whatever you want, but that's for your mood board. Now the next bite you're going to be is going to be for your colors, so you're literally going to move in the same way that the workbook moves. So you're going to now do your color. Yeah, I want you to put in all the color cards. I want you to put a movie a print out of its physical, off the colors or in this guy's. In my case, I will put the swatches in off the different colors worth all the color cards. And then I want you with notes to write down what the different colors are used for, especially if it's four specific things. So thinking about your funds thinking about your graphics, what are different things that you want to be reminded off when you are using your colors, then you're going to move on to your funds. And this is the same idea. You're going to write your funds down with the names of the funds, and then you're going to make your notes and write what front must be used in what circumstance. Then you're going to move on to your photography and your graphics and your notes. So was photography and graphics. If you didn't really have anything yet, you can go put what you've got. So in my case, I will put here that I'm going to be using more cups, and I might even put an image off a markup that I plan on using and for graphics output. My feather in there that I decided to use or if I change it, I'll put that in there. Follow Gaza nights. Yeah, you put in your lagers your different low guys, and also what they are used for. So if you created a square top lago way, do you plan on using it? If you create a longer lager, where do you plan on using it? And also, if there is maybe some kind of preferences or something like that? So right, all the notes in the and then your last page is for other notes. So anything else that comes to mind when you were while you've been working through the workbook and watching the lessons and doing your research, anything else that comes to mind, that's what you'll put yah. So I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to have fun, and I'm going to create my brain style guide, and I want you to do that to and then please go and upload it to the project section so that I can see what you come up with. And then I really hoped you had fun and I will see you in the next class of the Siri's 39. Thank You and What's Next: Congratulations. Now you should have a brand style guide for your brand.
