Digital Illustration: Turn Hand Sketches into Vector Art Part I

1. Digital Illustration > Introduction: hi and welcome to another digital illustration school share course. In this class, I will be teaching how to turn the hand sketch into vector artwork using adobe Illustrator and photo shop. I have started this process using photographs I have printed and traced over with black ink on trace paper. Even also, use a light table or bring in your own hands sketch that you 300. This class does assume a basic understanding of Adobe Photo Shop and Adobe Illustrator. However, I will be walking you through every step of the way, broken down into lessons so you can easily follow along in turn your sketches and drawings into beautiful vector artwork. But you can either use in your digital portfolio or print and frame on the wall to see of the class. 2. Digital Illustration > Lesson One: Hello and welcome to digital illustration. Lesson number one and turning your hand sketches into vector art. In this lesson, I will be going over how to initially trace over your photo and get it all set up in your hand, drawing ready in order to bring it into the computer in lesson number two. Okay, so to get started, take out your photograph and I like to tape it down to my desk or working surface so it doesn't move around as a sketch above it. You can do this using either masking tape or painter's tape also works really well without ruining your photograph. And then I have a role of trace people here. I've already torn off a sheet. I'm going to apply that over. However, this is where you can either use a late table or just bring in a hand sketch that you've already sketched over. So I'm gonna take down my street a trace paper over the image as well, and have it all set up to start drawing on. Next, I have my pen set out and I usually start with the outline. This is important on an image to give it a border. If you're going to fill in different areas of the photograph, once you turn it into a vector artwork with color blocking so you wanna make sure. But all those lines meet in the corner and there's no got into white space, very. And then start the drawing process. So I'm starting here with the rich line that you see in my mountain scene that I use it as an example and start going from there. Make sure to switch up pounds as you need. I have my cons here. However, you can use any type of pens, but thicknesses will carry over so important to keep it thicker and thinner. Where would you like it on the photo? Then begin drawing, finish out your entire photograph and turn it into a sketch we could bring into the computer and listen to 3. Digital Illustration > Lesson Two: Hello and welcome to digital illustration. Lesson to. In turn, hands catches inter vector art In this lesson, we will be going over how to bring in your photograph from an emailed image or skin drawing into Dobie Photoshopped and edit it so it's ready to bring into Adobe Illustrator To begin open Adobe Photo Shop and click on file Open to bring in your J pick or image file into photo shop. Make sure it is rotated the correct direction so you can go under image Image rotation if need be, mine is all set up right now. What we want to do is edit the contrast of the photo so the black and white is really strong and the images not in color. So first up, want to go to image adjustments? Click on black and white. Okay, next, go under image and adjustments, and let's click on the brightness and contrast. I'm going to boost the brightness of it and the contrast of that black. So it's not a gray screen hit. Okay, Lastly, I want to crop out these black tape marks and other items in the desk. I can either use the crop tool and pull this in, however, make shirts unconstrained at the top, or you confuse the rectangle marquee and crop it that way. Push! Enter. Okay, so now I've got an image edited, black and white, played with brightness and contrast. Next, I want export it as a J pic file to bring into illustrator some to go up to file safe as. And I want to see if this just a desktop so I can easily reference it. However, say this and whatever folder. So you have all your different phases, and we're gonna call, thus Mountain sketch. Okay. Next step open, Adobe Illustrator and going to go up to file open and open that mountain sketch. You could see her on my screen. I have the next phase what we're gonna end up getting to. However, it's going to initially look like this when you bring in any type of drawing. Um, I have my art board currently set at five inches five inches. However, this does not matter. And you can adjust it as you go through the course so you can always come back there. Okay, so I have a file. It's in here. A sculpture, mountain sketch I'm going to go ahead and file, save us and save it. Uh, please to. Okay, so the last step of this lesson is to turn this into vector artwork, so it's ready to fill in the colors and the next phase. So I'm gonna click on the image and go toe window and scroll down until you see image trace . And this box of options is going to pop up while you have your image selected. Go under the preset, go all the way down to sketched art and hit. OK, All right. So if I zoom in here, you will see that this has turned into vector line work while my images selected. I can move the threshold to collect more data or less. So play along with this. It'll depend what types of pens you used and how that image came into Photoshopped. I'm gonna go around 123 or so, okay? And lastly, would you goto object and push expand and note that it's expanding here is an object, and a fill would have pushed. Okay, So if I zoom in again, these are actually filled objects rather than lines. So that is one entire film that concludes lesson to, and we'll see you in the next lesson. 4. Digital Illustration > Lesson Three: Welcome back to digital illustration. Lesson three Turn hand sketches into vector art In this lesson, we will be going over how to change your black and white vector image in Adobe Illustrator into a colorful photograph with whatever colors you desire to fill your image with. So to begin, open up, Adobe Illustrator and the last image that we saved out during lesson to um so here I have skill share my phase two of black and white vector image. If I click on that, I will have one big image full of the Phil. If I go over here to my layer panel and if that does not show, you could always go upto window and make sure your layers are checked. You can see here I have the image on one layer and then I brought in a color palette, depending on what colors you want to use. You can either reference an eyedropper, an image or bring in the exact colors that you want to use. So I like to set that on the side here just for a matter of workflow. Okay, so going back to the image layer I want to start to fill in. He's different spots on my sketch. Would the color. So I'm gonna select everything and go up to object. Live paint make. And this might take just a moment. Um all right. So, little clique outside of that And go to my eyedropper tool and select this cream background color. Next, I'm going to go over here and find my paint bucket, and you can see why I'm hovering over different regions of my drawing that there's this red outline are the different zones. So I'm going to go ahead and click in that zone. No. Here on your image. If there are sketches that are covering up these different zones, you would have to come in and and click those individual areas with that, the beige color or whatever color you might be using. So go along the image. I'm starting to get the mountain scene. Next. I'm going to change color so zooming out, I have my color palette over here. Select that deep teal and continue filling in areas. My particular hatch on these people. I mean, there's a lot of different openings and this could change depending on the threshold. I originally set the image trace to, but I'm going to start filling in all these different pieces. Go back to the eye droppers like the next color, and start to fill in the different zones in colors. After you do this, go ahead and do your entire image, or however much he would like to. You're going to end up with an image, something like this home, and you can see here. I actually change that black outline to the brown, so I go back to E Phase two. Image and note. Here in my color palette, have this dark chocolate brown. If I zoom in, I can actually select the hand drawing that turned into vector artwork. However again, this could get a little bit tedious was note here that there are black lines in here is well, so I want to make sure I get all of those has the brown. I'm someone to go through and get all of these different sections of my drawing. And after I do all of that, you should get somewhere that looks like this. So if I were to hover right now, I can still come into those owns. How going to push, undo and keep that beach. Um, and that concludes the end of Lesson three 5. Digital Illustration > Lesson Four: Welcome back to digital illustration. Lesson for turn hand sketches. Inter Vector art In this lesson, I will be going over the very last steps of exporting your digital artwork into different files, whether you want it as your digital portfolio item or if you want to print it as a poster for your house, so to begin, if you want to go ahead and open up your latest file from Lesson three, which should have all the different colors and vector artwork you want to use. Next, I'm gonna go up to file export, and I want to say this directly on my desktop and no, here at the bottom. There's a lot of different file types. I would recommend exporting it as a tiff file or PNG to place into adobe in design. If you want to print it for a printer or if you want it as a digital image, depends what kind of file you're putting on your website. I'm someone to go ahead and do a pain. PNG. Call it phase, for I'm also gonna check the box to use the art boards and push export. I'm going to keep the resolution and background color white hit. Okay, so I go over to my desktop, double click on the image here. I have a PNG file ready to go.
