1. Introduction to Custom Clipart: in this designing with appropriate class, we're gonna take a look at how to create clip art with our drawings that we have done in appropriate. The first part of the class is based entirely inappropriate up. And we will create an export. Our work right from the iPad. The second part of the class. We're gonna move on into Adobe Illustrator, where we will vector rise and exporter clip art. I hope you enjoy the class. See you there.
2. Create clipart using the Procreate app: Hi and welcome to another. Designing with procreate in this class, I'm gonna show you how to create clip art. These are two methods that I use. There are several several methods. Eso this. These are not the only two ways to do this. The first method we're gonna use is just appropriate app on the iPad. The second method we're gonna use Illustrator if you do not have Adobe Illustrator, I believe you can still download a trial version. And you can just go to the Creative Cloud Website Adobe's Creative Cloud and download that there. I believe it's 30 days so but I'm going to show you two different ways. We're going to start off with just using the procreate out. Okay, so first up, we're gonna go ahead and use the procreate app to create our clip. Art, this is arrested program. So we are prone to getting picks, elation and blurriness. Eso First up, you want to think about your canvas size and ah, we're creating just basic clip art here. We're not creating anything for billboards or anything like that's Ah, If you are designing for billboards, you want to start off in illustrator anyway for this class. We're just doing basic clip art. And I created a six by six inch canvas. Ah, 300 dp I So the very important thing here is creating your resolution has got to be high. So set it at 300. Okay, so I went ahead and I created some artwork here. And you can see I've got all three pieces of my artwork and I've resize them to fit my canvas. Once you have these drawn out, you can go ahead, fill them up, and then make sure they're all in separate layers. Because if these two are on the same layer, obviously read, have a problem. So make sure that when you're creating your artwork, they are each piece or each motif that you're creating eyes on its on lier. Okay, so I have these on separate layers. I'm gonna start exporting these, and I'm sure that you've seen this done plenty of times before you've done it yourself. All we're doing here is we're exporting is a PNG file. So this is a transparent background. So what you want to dio when you're ready to export, come to your layers, turn off your background come up to your actions. Make sure you're in share. Share is a PNG, and I'm gonna save my Dropbox. Here. Let's do one save, and that's it. That was all you have to dio. I'm gonna show you in another canvas here. If I import that photos of coming back when I insert a file, I'm gonna go to There's my floral one. Some import one of these that I did earlier. And there is my photo. So if I need to, I can increase this a bit. Uh, but like I said before, this isn't 8.5 by 11. Canvas and I have drawn up just a little Mac up of a greeting card, and I am going to re scale this a little bit here. And then what I'll do is I will bring in my other pieces, and there we go. So let's go ahead and get rid of this one here. There we go. Okay. Hopes. So now we can go ahead and rearrange these, um, how we want them and we can create whatever we want. Whether this is for a birthday card, it could be used in many, many, many other projects. When you're creating your artwork, just keep in mind what you might want to use it for later. I know that there's a lot of you out there that are into pattern design and this is perfect because this is how I create my motifs or my icons, things like that for my patterns. I'll do it exactly like I did here. But the only difference for me is I would rather create vector artwork. And that's what I'm gonna show you in. The next part of this class is I'm gonna show you how to vector rise. These pieces are one of these pieces anyway, but for basic clip art that you're not, you're just using for something like this. This is perfect. There's many, many designers out there that create bundles of PNG files with their artwork so it could be water color. It could be just basic floral things like this. Drawings line, line work. Eso it doesn't matter. The thing is, is that you have to have a transparent background and it must be high quality. The resolution must be great. That is it. I know that was really simple, and it's very easy. So what you would do when you're done without your pieces. So let's say you have, like, 100 little motifs that you've drawn out on. You want a bundle? This, so I have to do is come into let's say you're keeping your stuff in Dropbox. So we'll come into Dropbox, go to wherever you keep or sense your work to be whatever folder you have it in. So once you're done, go into your folder, find all of those things that you've just done. So here's my files. Here. Put them all into one folder. Do some backups of how you would use these pieces yourself. Eso maybe on a wine bottle or in a greeting card. That's it. You would go ahead and just bundle it all up and market it and sell it that way, if you want to sell it. Otherwise, this is great just to use for yourself. So if you can keep them on one folder and you've, uh, got your next project and you need this for a piece that you've designed maybe two months ago, you have it in a PNG and you can just bring it right in and that's it. That's why you have to do all right. In the next class, we're gonna take these pieces here, which, uh, consists of four pieces. Although I would probably not count. The circle that I have here is is just a base for me too. Create my flower. So these three elements here, we're gonna go ahead and take these into illustrator in victories them. 3. Create clipart with Illustrator + Class Project: Hi. Welcome back to the second part of the class. We're now an illustrator, and we're gonna go ahead and import our place, our work from appropriate. When you do your work inappropriate and you export it, you can. Export is a J pick. That's perfectly fine. It doesn't matter. I've got mine coming in as a PNG. And the reason is is I wanted to show you what happens when you do it or the PNG file with the transparent background. It's no big deal, but just you guys could see what it looks like. What happens? I just opened up any It doesn't matter. Size wise toe what you're doing because we're gonna be creating our own art boards here in a little bit s to size. You could just do an 8.5 by 11 size canvas if you want. Let me go to file place. I was gonna open up here to where I keep my work and I click on the document I need And when I click, please. Yes, you can see now it's kind of following me around and I can place this wherever I want. And I was gonna click here. And because I did this that such a huge size, I need to resize this. I would not resize it that enormous size like that. It might take a huge amount of time. Eso I would kind of make it trinket if it's too big. If it comes in maybe like this, you might want to resize it a little bit, just so you can see it. Okay, so right now I'm gonna be size this just a bit more, and you can see that this is a transparent background. And while I image Trace, I'm gonna leave this hanging off the side so you can see what happens. I first want to mention that we're gonna be using Image Trace, and I want to let you know that this is not a magic tool. This is best for basic drawings, simple line work. I would not use this for anything extremely detailed or something to where you need perfectly straight lines. If you do want perfectly straight lines, but you've got a drawing inappropriate. You wanna recreate? I recommend bringing it in and using it to trace. So like fonts and things like that. I normally we'll bring in my my fonds or my letters that I create on the iPad and I retrace them all just here in Illustrator. I just use it as a guide. The image traces really good for stuff like this. But again, if you want a really detailed work, I would definitely retrace it. So All right, let's get to the image Trace. You can use it here just from the drop down and choose the one you want here. I normally prefer to open up the panel, which is right here. It may come in looking like this. If you do want to use the advanced settings, you can go ahead and click this. So if I just do a simple trace, I believe this off just a bit. And I just do a black or white. You can see that the mode is black or white, and I click Trace. We just got a black or white trace and that's perfect. That's usually pretty much 99 for some of the time. That is what I use because I like to re color an illustrator. Not appropriate. All right, So if I wanted to do color, though, let's say I we're gonna do three colors and you'll see that this might take a little bit longer, depending on how many clergy actually have in your original drying. All right, Perfect. So that looks really good. Uh, I don't see any craziness when it comes to the line. There's no jagged edges or anything like that. Besides, the one that, you know, when I drew it, that can always be fixed again. If you're looking for something Perfect. I would definitely redraw this in Illustrator, But for this I'm not looking for perfect lines. I just want a simple recreation of my initial drawing. Okay, so I'm gonna go back, and I'm gonna do black away, because I'm gonna show you how I apply the color later so we'll just do the default, but you can go ahead and, uh, please feel free to just experiment with any of these. Also, if you find maybe you're bringing in some water core pieces which are very detailed. If you go in and you know you're messing with thresholds in the pounds and all that kind of stuff. If you've got the perfect settings ready and it works really well for water color if you click here, you can save all of that information is a new preset and even just save it. Is your watercolor preset? That way, Whenever you bring in a watercolor piece or something extremely detailed, you can just use the drop down menu and click on your watercolor, whatever it may be preset. Uh, it's a lot easier than having to guess and figure out which paths or which settings you used prior. All right, so now we have is completed. We need to expand it into paths. And to do this, we need to come up to the top and click expand. All right. Perfect. So now you can see that that X going crossed, our work is going on and you can see all of the anchor points that make up this piece of work. The only thing is where I told you that I brought in a PNG with the background transparent background. We now have a background, and it's that white here, so we need to get rid of that. So if I click delete and I click on that way, I'm gonna delete everything because it's grouped after your image trace and expand everything gets grouped automatically and to get rid of that group you. So let your artwork here slept. The peace come to object on group or you can use the keyboard shortcut. I prefer to just right click on my work and click on group. So sometimes this will have you do it twice. If you click on this and it's not on group, just go ahead and group it again. But now you can see there is our background. We go ahead, delete that because we're not going to be using it and we can move these pieces around freely. And now these two are one piece because they're connected. But these here are all separate pieces, which is nice. If you wanted these all separate when you draw them in appropriate. Just don't connect these pieces here. So if you want these separate, you could just draw these. You would draw the line and then dry leaves separate okay? Or if you wanted to, you can come in here with your pen tool, and you can redraw all this stuff. But anyway, let's stay on course here. Uh, that's really it. That's all you have to do with basic line drawings, simple things. I'm gonna go ahead and re color, So go ahead and open up your swatches, which is here in window. Just click on your swatches panel and it'll open up to something like this If you're new to illustrator, if you click this watches libraries. You have all these to choose from. So let's say I wanted the fruit. It's gonna open up this panel here and I'll have all the colors that are in, uh, in this section here available to me. So if I wanted this green, I have to make sure that my work selected before I change the color. Obviously, us. We'll click this pink here. But what's nice about this here is that I created these all separate. So if I wanted Teoh create ingredient, let's say and I wanted this pink and then I wanted these three surrounding pedals to be, um maybe a shade lighter. I come in to my color picker and just lightly bring this color down in the way that I could that I selected all of those what's clicking on one holding shift and then clicking on all of the pedals that I wanted to include in that and that will select all of those at once. And I can go ahead and I can do If I wanted to do these all different colors, I could do that. So very easy. But I do prefer re coloring and doing all of my coloring an illustrator rather than appropriate. So anyway, that is coloring very, very, very basic. There's so much more to it. But I will not get into that. This course we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna make this into are clip art. So we want us want to go ahead and export this as a piece of clip art or transparent PNG. Okay, so I'm gonna go ahead really quick, and I want a color my pieces here so that we can do all of them. Uh, see. All right. Perfect. Those will work. And I want to leave this funky flower just the way it is you can see. Right now we have a least separate if you want to keep them all together. So let's say you want to move it and you accidentally move a piece. Uh, go ahead and select all of it and come up to object group. So we're gonna just regroup just this flower so that when we go to pick up 11 pedal, the entire flower will move with us. Okay, So next we're gonna do is make sure that we have the size the way we were on it. And this looks like it's like to buy, uh, to Seoul say almost three by three. Uh, that would That's fine. That looks really good. Another thing you want to do is make sure that you're constrained. Width and height proportions is checked. If you don't uncheck it here. If I do four, you can see how that gets stretched. So make sure that this is checked. And if you want to go to three, I don't automatically insert the other value for you. So it stays the same. Ah, heightened with Okay, so now that we have the size right, we're gonna go ahead and create a square. So God, come in and find your rectangle tool over here and just draw simple rectangle right over your flower. Just like that, we want this rectangle to be in the back. So we're gonna come upto object. We're gonna go to arrange send a back. So now it's in the back. And we also want to make sure that this hasn't no Phil. So you can either come up here and click No fell or in your swatches panel if you haven't open and just click the none here. All right. So come back to your selection tool here, which is the top, or, uh, V. The letter v will get you back to your selection tool. Click this here. And actually, just the square that we did do not include the flower because we're going to be creating an art board from this square. So making sure that you just have your square selected goto objects, art boards convert art board. So now you can see that we haven't our board just for our flower right there. We're gonna do the same thing with our leaves. I'm gonna come in and just grab my rectangle tool again and I'll just draw a square here, goto object, arrange Send it back, trim it color off. Making sure to come back to my selection tool. Click off the art boards. Click on just the square or the rectangle that we created. Goto object. Our boards convert art board and they will do that one more time over here with this last one. So I'll do a rectangle over this one, which it kept that no color. But I'm gonna add a color just to make sure that because if it has no color, we're not sure if it's in front of or back of the piece. So I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna go to object. Arrange Sunday back. Now I know it's behind my artwork is and I'll go ahead and turn the color off. Go to object. Art boards convert our board. Perfect. So I haven't art board for all of my pieces that I want to export is clip art. So now that we have these three in their own our boards, I want to get rid of this one and this one I don't need these anymore. Somebody go into a window art boards and I'm going to select of the three or the two that I don't need. So we know that that one is this one. We can go ahead and dump that one. This one here we go ahead and get rid of so All we have left are the street art boards we're gonna export. These is transparent. PNG is that we can He was elsewhere for our projects. So I go ahead and close. My art boards have. Now that I have these all in their separate art boards, I can go ahead and export these. What I want to do is go to file export export as and I'll just name these skills. Shame. Flowers. Okay, I'm gonna put these on my desktop here. Your format is PNG, and we want to make sure they use art boards is checked and that we're doing these for all of them. So click all what? Them all to export. So that's it. Go ahead and click export. Once this screen comes up, make sure that this is at high 300 your art optimized, and that you were back on. Color is transparent. Click. OK, come on. Your desktop and they should pop up here. So now we have these here, which I don't He's twice it's Get rid of those. Okay, so here we are. We can see that these look really good and, you know, we can go ahead and over these up in another program. Time to show you how to do that as well. All right, Now I'm in photo shop and I want to go ahead, and I want to use the clip art of PNG files. So what I have to do eyes. I have to play some in here in order to use them. So we go file place unvetted. We're gonna find those flowers, so I'm gonna import one. And when it comes up like this, you can just hit, enter, or you can click the Czech market the top, and it'll place it in there for you to go to the next one place. Impacted. Choose number two place again. Cook the check worker hit Enter Vile Place invited, and I'm gonna grab the last one. That's it. So now I'm gonna go ahead and resize these Click on what I think is my flower and you can see now I am re sizing this quite big and it still looks really good, you know, kind of these around. But somewhere I would them just like this and we could do whatever we want with these. It doesn't have to be. It doesn't have to stay the same as it did before I were able to. If you want to flip these, you can do that. So it's really cool. It's really nice to have, uh, your artwork available to you in other programs if you need it. All right, let's say that that's are a little thing there. We want to say Happy happy birthday. We're good so we can go ahead and find out that's it. That's all we have to do if you want to use that separately. If you want to use these in any other program, you can. I believe you can insert these in word if you feel you have to design in that program, Um, anyway, you can use these anywhere. You could even bring these back in appropriate if you Let's say you had a hand letter in peace that you wanted to add your flower to. You could just bring that back in is a transparent PNG and use it that way. That is it. That's all you have to do is very simple. Uh, just doing it this way again. Make sure that your your size is correct before you export it. If you find that you have created your Let's say that you did this one here and it was way too big. You want to resize it, just go ahead and delete this one on. Then start over, come back and you can always resize this here. If we resize the smaller like this, we want to go ahead and we want to make art board smaller. So just come into your our boards and create. So what? I didn't change the size of this so you would just come in and change the size according toa What you need. So that's it. That is all there is to it. It's very simple. Once you're done with all of your, let's say had 60 pieces, you just bundle is all in one folder on either upload them to sell them or give them away or even keep them in your own files to use later on. All right, so on to the final project. I do want to point out that this does not have to be created in procreate or even on the iPad at all. If your original drawings are appropriate, that's perfectly fine. If they're in another app on the iPad. That's also perfectly fine. If your drawings are on paper that you've scanned into your computer and you've traced an illustrator, that is also perfectly fine. This does not have to be just digital drawings. This could be anything, really. Just depending on what you drew the deep the amount of detail is going to depend on how image trace works for you. Like I said, I have not gotten into it in this class. I just wanted to show a basic overview of how to create the clip. Are using your your drawings? I just wanted to make mention that you do not have to bring in artwork from the iPad or even appropriate out. You can do it, however you want to do it. So back to the final project again, we're just gonna create simple drawings. You're gonna show your clip art that you created. And if you want, you can go ahead and upload them file just like this has, as we created those I would recommend probably having to convert those too. A J peg skill share might not upload. Do it do to the file size, so either you might have to shrink that really small are just converted to a J peg. So it's up to you. Otherwise you can go ahead. And you could do a Mac up like we did here, showing the clip art and how you can use it in other projects. Uh, that is it. That is it for the class. I hope you enjoyed it.
