1. Introduction: Hi there and welcome. My name is Holland, and
I've been using Canva for many years and for all
kinds of purposes. For example, promoting
my Etsy shop and for publicity work for organizations that
I've volunteered for. In this class, we're going
to be talking about using Canva for small
businesses and creators. If you're wondering
what is Canvas, A web based piece of software that you can use
to create designs? Some of these might be
designs for printing, like business cards,
flyers, or stickers. Others might be social media
posts or website banners. You can even create short videos such as social media reels, gifts, presentations,
Youtube intros or video app. Those are quite new
features though. What Canvas really known
for right now is creating still images with a combination of photos, graphics, and text. That's what we're going to
focus on in this class. To find Canva, just type Va.com Canva.com
in the address bar at the top of your browser. Or you can search Canva
in Google search. There's also a Canva app available for
smartphones and tablets. Most people use the
free version of Canva, but if you want
more features like a wider array of graphics
and stock photos, you can pay for a monthly
subscription to Cama Pro. It's worth mentioning here
that if you're using Canva for an educational organization
or a nonprofit, you can apply for a free
subscription to Canva Pro. In this beginner class, we'll cover the basics of using Canva to make designs
for print and social media that you can use to promote your small
business or creative work. I'll show you how to use templates at photos
and graphics. Apply text, resize and
rearrange everything, change things like
colors and fonts, and download your finished
design onto your computer. I'm going to show you
two example projects, a logo and an Instagram post. And then we'll work
on a class project together where we'll
design a business card. If that sounds like the
class you're looking for, then come along and join
me in the next video. I can't wait to see
what you design.
2. Getting started: To get started with Canva, create a free account
at Canva.com You can do this by signing
up with one of your existing
accounts with Google, Facebook, or various others. Alternatively, you
can start from scratch by signing up
with your e mail address. The search bar here is
where most people start. The first thing Canva needs to know is what is this design for? Because that affects the size
and shape of the design. If you're making something
common like a business card, you can just type
that into the box. Canva will give you some
options to choose from. You can also type in a
standard paper size, such as US letter, or one of the sizes
like five or four. Some people prefer to browse these options here instead
of typing in the search bar. Or if you want your design
to have a specific size, you can choose the custom
size button up here. Then change the
pixels to inches, millimeters, or centimeters, whichever you want to work in. And then put the dimensions
in these two boxes. Then click Create New Design. All of these various methods
will lead to the same place, a new canva design like this. But some will offer you
templates to choose from first, and others will give you
a blank design first. You can still use a
template either way. Here's how to get
to the templates once your new design
has been created. On the left hand side, look for this dark gray menu. And then click the top
icon, which is design. Now you can browse through
all the templates below, or you can try searching for
something such as floral. If you're using a free account, make sure you only
pick templates that don't have the
little crown in the corner which says
pro when you hover over it or a currency
symbol in the corner. Those are the ones that
you have to pay for. Annoyingly, even when you
pick a free template, sometimes it will
contain elements such as graphics
that are not free. You can tell these
because there will be diagonal lines across
them like this. And it will say remove water marks in the
top right corner. When this happens, you can
delete the premium element and search for something similar but free in this element section, which we'll talk about
in the next video.
3. The 'Elements' menu: Going back over to
this left menu. The Elements menu has
shapes, graphics, photos, and plenty of other things that you can
include in your design. Starting with Shapes,
I'm going to delete this premium element by clicking on it and
then clicking delete. And then I'm going
to go to Shapes and just choose this square. I can change the color of this, which I'll go into in
more detail later. I can resize it in this way, Replace the element
that was there before. But we're not limited to just
basic shapes like squares. We can also choose graphics. So let's say you wanted flowers. You can simply type it
in the search box at the top and get lots of
options for flowers. Now again, we want to
avoid these ones with a little crown or any that might come up with
a currency symbol. The rest of them
are free to use. It's easy to get lost in this menu because the
Elements menu has got lots of sub menu
it's recently used. It's got shapes, graphics, stickers, photos,
videos, and lots more. Once you actually go
into one of these, let's say you click on graphics. It can then be easy to forget that there's
a back button at the top and that you can then get into all these other things. So don't forget that the elements is more
than just one menu. So let's say we wanted
photos of flowers instead. We can type that in in
exactly the same way. And just like with
every other menu, just ignore anything
that's got a crown on it. Unless of course, you
do have a pro account. If we want to use one of
these photos in our design, we can use it in
one of two ways. We can drag and drop it somewhere in the
middle of the design, in which case it'll come up smaller than the full width
and the height of the design. I'm just going to delete that. Or we can click and
drag and we can drop it right on the
edge of the design here. And you can see that
if you do that, it takes over the
background of the design. However, you're not stuck with
it being framed like that. If you double click on it, it now shows you
the whole design. You can drag it around. Just click and drag to
where you want it to be. Let's say you wanted less of the white and more
of the flowers. You can drag it over like
that and then click Done. Now you're getting more
of it in the background. However, if you wanted just
one flower in the corner, you didn't want it to
take over the background. Oops, that's a pro one. You could click and drag and drop it in the
middle instead. In the next video, I'm
going to show you how to resize and there's even a way to recolor some of the elements. In the rest of the elements
menu, we've got stickers. These are graphics that move. You might find these
useful if you're doing a social media reel or a
video or something like that. Photos tend to be photo realistic, but
sometimes they're not. Sometimes it's a
photo of an artwork, so it can get a bit confusing. Whereas, whereas graphics
are usually illustrated, you can also bring
videos into your design. If you're working on a video, you can get stock video clips. You can also bring audio in. You can bring these
charts and these tables. I don't use those very much. Frames I do use sometimes. Now these are interesting. Let's say we click on oil
to see all the frames. What these do is create a constrained area for
a photo or graphic. Right now there's
nothing in that. It's, it's just that
default hill and sky. But what that is, is a
placeholder for a picture. Let's say we wanted to
put a photo in there, we'll search flowers again. I'll try with this one because
it'll be easier to see. You see this is a, this is a rectangular photo. But because I've dropped
it into a circular frame, it's constrained
it to that circle. And you can do
this with a number of different shapes of frames. That's really useful
if you want to create a template that you're going
to use over and over again, but drop different
pictures in each time.
4. Adjusting things: In this video,
we're going to talk about how to move the elements around in your design
and change the colors. Going from the elements menu, we're going to go into
graphics and then see all this time we'll
search for pizza. Now as before, we're going to ignore the ones with
little crowns on, so let's grab one that
doesn't have a crown. Graphics work a little bit
differently from photos. With photos you have to click and drag them onto the design. But with graphics you
can just click because graphic don't have the option of taking over the screen
like the photos do. A simple click is
all you need and it will appear in the
middle of your design. You can then click
and drag to move it around within your design. You can use this rotation
button at the bottom to rotate. You don't get much
of a difference with this one just because
it's a round design. In the corners, we have
these re size handles. You can see if you
hover over the corner, you can see the arrow changing and that means it
does something different. Every corner has one of these and they all
do the same thing, which is to make it
smaller or larger. There are some extra
handles at the sides here. These ones will basically, it's hard to explain really,
but it will do that. There's not very many situations in which you'd want to do that, because it's cutting off
pieces of the image. But you might wish to in
certain circumstances. Now with some images you can
change the color of them. This isn't one of them because it's quite a complicated image. But if I were to click on
a simple one like this, where I can see it's
only got one color. This also sometimes applies to graphics that have
two or three colors. You can click up here, you notice with this one, there's a black box up there. Whereas you click this
one, it doesn't have that. That's the difference
between ones you can't recolor and
ones that you can. When you click on
this, you could change this black color
for something else. If you click on
Photo Colors here, you can choose colors that
are already in your design, so you can make it match
what's already there. As before, we can use the Rotate button and we
can use the resize handles. Now once you start filling up your design with various
different things, you'll notice that some of them are in front of the others. If you need to change this,
there's an easy way to do it. You just make sure that
the thing you want to change is selected
by clicking on it. Then go up to position here. There's two ways of changing. The easier one is to use this range bit where you've got forward to front
backward, or to back. Some of them are grayed out because they're not applicable. This one is as far forward
as you can get it. So I can't choose those, but I can make it go backwards. Now of course, I get
the other options where I can make it
come forwards again. We can also use this
section here to align it. Let's say I wanted this pizza and those chips to be
aligned down the middle. Then I could choose center
here and it would do that. If I wanted it aligned the
other way, I can do that. Or I can align the left side, the bottom, the
right or the top. If you have lots of
images and you're struggling to find the right one to make the position work, then instead of
using this bit here, you would change
this arranged tab to layers and then you get
a more detailed view. If I wanted this
pizza at the top, I would simply click and drag
to the top of the layers. Think of these
layers as sheets of plastic with things
printed on them. And then the bottom
layer as being an opaque white sheet or
whatever color it is. You can shuffle those
sheets of plastic around so that different
things can be at the top.
5. Working with text: Next we're going to
talk about how to bring text into your design. Again, you want to look
in this menu here, but instead of elements,
we're going to click on text. Now you can click on these
for various sizes of heading. You could click on some of
these if they're not pro, and that will give you
some grouped text. Or you can click Add a Text box. They are all just
different ways to do basically the same thing, which is to bring a bit
of text into your design. While you have that selected up, here is the place where
you can change fonts. You click on this and you have all these
fonts to choose from. Bear in mind that the fonts here might not be the ones
that you're used to. For instance, the ones
that you get with Word. Canva has its own fonts, but it does have a lot of them. You probably find want, similar to the ones
that you're used to, as well as browsing through them up and down
the way I just did. You can also type in
here, for instance. You could type handwriting and it will give you
options that all look like they've been
handwritten as before. Just ignore the little
ones with the crowns, let's say we want to
choose this one, actually. That's not very readable. Bear in mind that these
fonts, they may look nice, but you've got to bear
in mind how quickly people can read when
it looks like that. I think rather than
choosing a handwritten one, I'm going to use a
Corporate one instead. As well as the option to
change the font here. We can also change the size. We can press the up or down
buttons here to do that. Or we can also use the resize handles the way we did
with the graphics. If you use these side handles, then it'll wrap the
text like that. Just bear in mind the side handles don't make
the text bigger, but the corner handles do
make it bigger or smaller. We can change the color
of the text here. At the top here, it'll give
us the document colors. That is the colors that
we've already used. I have this up here, that's
why it's bringing up pink. If you have a pro account, you can set some of your own colors that you like here or colors that
you're using for your brand. These are the colors of the photos that I've
got in my design. That's a useful
one to pick from. Or you can pick a whole load
of different ones here. But these aren't
your only choices, because you can click on this plus here to add a new color. You can slide this all the
way along the rainbow. And then you can use this bit here to choose how much black or white you want or how vivid or dark you want
the color to be. Then you have options
to make the text bold, italic, or underlined. Not all of the fonts have
that, but some of them do. You can strike through the text. You can choose whether you want it capitals or just normal. You can align it to the left, the right, the middle. Or you can make it justified, which doesn't really
show with this, but it would with a
larger block of text. You can make bullet points. The spacing is really good for like titles
and stuff like that. So let's say you
have this big title here and you click on Spacing. The letter spacing will move the letters
further away from each other's with more space
in between or less space. And then line spacing. I'll have to put in an
extra line to show you this one for line spacing that can make the space between the
lines bigger or smaller. Animation isn't something that you'd use for a still image, but you can use it if
you're going to be putting your design into
a video or presentation, or a gift, or
something like that. That basically allows
the text to move around. So you can have it slide
onto the screen or fade in. You have it move slowly, come up from the bottom. You can have it
like a typewriter. Things like that, position
we talked about before. We have these options to
move it into the center, into the middle, the
bottom right or left. That can be a quick way to position it in exactly the
place you want it to be. I didn't talk about
these options before. I can show you with the text, it makes it more transparent. That can be useful if
you have a small bit of text at the bottom and you don't want it to draw the eye away from the
large title or too much. And it's also a useful
one to do with elements. If we had a shape in there, we might want this color
put a bit more see through. Just bear in mind that's not
adding white to the color, but it's actually making
it more see through. It's almost like
adding water to paint. Then if we had that, but we had it positioned
to the back, we'd still be able
to see it because this is partly transparent. We also have the option of
adding effects to text. To get into that menu, you would click on the text
and then click on Effects. At the moment, it
doesn't have any on, but I could add a shadow
which would look like that. I can change the color
of the shadow here. I can also change how
big the shadow is, what direction it goes in, whether it's blurred or
how transparent it is. Here are some of
the other effects. There's lift that
can be useful if you just want the title to stand out a bit more from
the background. And you can change
the intensity here. You can make it hollow splice, which is hollow with a shadow. I think you can have an outline and you can change the color of the outline and the thickness. You can choose echo
glitch or Neon. Again, lots of options for
customizing these things. You can give it a background that's useful if the
background is busy. You need the text to
stand out from that. As usual, you can
customize bits of that background
with these options here, including the color. Another interesting
effect is curve, which doesn't have to
be that pronounced. Once you've clicked on curve, you can move the slider here to decide whether you want it to curve up or down,
and by how much. Then click this one if you
decide you don't like that. After all, another
two options I haven't discussed at the top
here are copy style. This would be useful
with text if, say you had another
text box here, you wanted this one to
look like that one, you could click the roller here, which is copy style, and then click on the
other one to make it the same size
and the same font. The option at the end is if you're sure that something
is where you want it to be. The option here is lock. Let's say you like
that big title, you want it to stay there. You can click unlock. Now this is not forever
because you can see you've got an
option there to unlock. But that just means
that you can move around everything
else that you want. And you won't accidentally
move your big title, but I'm going to
unlock that again. When you click on the title, you get some options here. This one is to duplicate it, this one is to delete it. And the rest. So
you can copy it. You can copy the style
paste, duplicate, delete. You can align it
to various places on the page and you can
do these things as well, which you probably
don't need as often. It is a little bit harder
to move text around than it is with
graphics and photos, because when you click on it, you can click and drag. But if you click twice, then you get the cursor so
that you can change the text. If you have the cursor up and
then you want to move it, it can be a little bit
tricky, but just look. When you go to the
edge of the box, you can see the cursor changes
to that four way arrow, and that means you
can move it around.
6. Uploading your own pics: In this video, we're
going to talk about uploads on the left menu Here we're going to
click on Uploads, and this is going to
give you the option to upload files here. You can bring in photos
that you've taken yourself or artwork of your own. You can also bring
in videos and audio, and you can record yourself
using this button. This can be really
useful if you've gone into elements and you've gone
into photos or graphics, and you've searched
for something, but it's really
specific, I don't know. You want a yellow ukulele and everything that comes
up has got a crown on it, so you can't use any of them. You can go to a website called Pixabay and you can search for anything
you want on there. And all of these pictures
are free to use. Just ignore this top line here because you can see it
says sponsored images. This top bit isn't
actually Pixabay, it's an advert from
another website. Whereas, when it says
royalty free images, all the ones below here are
the ones that you can use. I forgot to search for
the thing I wanted. Okay. That was too
specific for Pixabay. But you get the idea. You
could search for it anything. And it would bring
you all kinds of photos that you can choose from. And these are all free to use. What you could do is you
could pick a specific one, click on it, download it, you may need to log in, depending on which
one you choose. I'm just going to
choose that one that's going to download. And then I can go
back into Canva. I can click Upload, and I can click Upload files. I can go into my Downloads to find the picture that I
just saved and click open. You can see it uploading there. It's going to take
a little while to upload and now it's ready. So I can click and drag
onto my thing as before. With any photo, you can click
and drag into the middle. Or you can click and drag to the edge to make it take
over the whole screen. Another website similar
to Pixabay is Pexels. And that's just the same
as Pixabay. Really? It's photos that you
can use for free. Let's say you wanted a
smartphone with a blank screen. You get lots on here. The main difference
I find between the two sites is that Pixabay is mostly horizontal photos
like this, a landscape photo. Whereas pexels, you've got
more portrait photos in there. So you do have horizontal ones as well, but it's a mixture. And I think a bit
more variety on pexels unless
you're specifically looking for landscape photos. You also have videos
that you can download on pexels and on Pixabay. On Pixabay you would just choose all images and you would
change it to photos, illustrations, vectors,
videos, music, sound effects, or gifts.
Depending on what you want. You have a similar thing
on here where you can choose photos or videos.
7. Customizing templates: So we talked a little bit
about templates before, but I'm going to go
back into that now. I've shown you how to
move things around. I'm going to search for
a specific template that I know I want to use. So I'm searching for breakfast and I'll just find
the one there it is. So that's the one
that I like, but I don't have to use
that for breakfast. Okay. And I don't have
to use these pictures. I can change everything on here, but keep the basic layout. Let's say I wanted to use
this to promote my Etsy shop. I could say now on sale. And just move that across a
little bit and then make it a bit smaller so it doesn't get in the way of the other stuff. I can get rid of this chef's hat because that's not
relevant to me. Let's say I changed this
to my hoops Etsy name. Drag that out so that all
the text is on one line. And then resize it so that
it fits in there better. I could change the color of
the text and then if I wanted to put my own pictures into these frames, I
would go over here. This is my upload, spit. So I've clicked uploads on the left menu and I've already got some things
that I've uploaded here. Let's say I just want to put these products
into the pictures. I'm going to get rid of
these little dollar signs. I could change this text to describe what's in the pictures. That's not really
standing out very much. I think I'll change
it to a lighter blue. This could go this
way a little bit. Then let's say I don't
like the background. I could go to elements. I don't forget about this
back button up here. We do have lots of options, but I'm going to go into photos, I'm going to search
this time for mystical. Then I quite like this forest
or this one, the galaxy. That's quite nice, but I don't know if the
colors really go. I'll try the forest, I
think goes a bit better. But now I can't
see my text here. The blue chalet.com I can
see it, but not properly. What I'm going to do
is go to Elements, Go to Shapes, and I'm going to just click on that
to bring in a shape. I'm going to change the
background of the shape to white. And then I'm going to
change the transparency so that I can see through
it, but not fully. And then I'm going to
bring that up here. I'm just going to change
the sizing so that it's here where my text is now. That's actually
worse, not better. It's just because the
colors are too similar. I will change the color of the text back to the
dark blue that I liked. In fact, I'll choose this one because it goes more
with one that's in the picture and I
can bold it as well, that's a little
bit more visible. I think I'm happy
with my design now. That's how you
customize a template. Bear in mind that you
don't have to use a template for the purpose that it was originally
designed for. You can just change everything that's in it and just
keep the layout.
8. Downloading your design: This one's going to be
a really quick one. I'm just going to
show you how to get this design onto your computer now that
you've finished it. So let's say I'm happy with it, I just want it on my computer. And I don't think that
this part is very obvious. But you go up to the top
right and you click Share, And then you go to the download
button here, click here. It will come up with a
suggested file type, and you can just stick
with that if you want, or you can change to one of
these other types of files. A J peg is a small image file that is good for sharing
on the Internet. A PNG file is a higher
quality image file, but it may be slower to load if you put it
on the Internet. And then you've got a PDF
standard and PDF print. Pdf standard you would use for a document with just text
in it and PDF print. You'd use a document if you need it to be
a higher quality. Like if it's got some
images in it and stuff, SVG, you're probably
not going to need. Or if you've created a video, you can save it as
a video or a gift. I'm just going to
keep that as PNG. Then it's important to tell
it which page you want to do. Now, I will just tell you a
little bit about the pages. Okay, So this is the design I was working on before.
And then this is this one. If I wanted to add a new page, I could click Add Page at the bottom and just
give me another page. This is always going to be the same size as the
pages you've had before. So if you need to do a new
design with a different size, you have to go back into Canva and start again
from the beginning. But if you need the same
size, you just add a page. You also have the option to
duplicate a page up here, or you have the
option to delete it. I'm going to delete this page. I'm back to having
these two pages. That's why it asks you
which page you want. You go to share, download, check your file type, and then you're going
to select the page. At the moment it's got
both of them selected. But I only want the second one, so I'm going to tick that one. I'm going to click Done, and then I'm going
to click Download. It's taking a minute,
but it should soon be in my Downloads folder, but now it's on my computer. That's how you get it from
Canva into your computer.
9. Example Project: Logo: The next couple of videos are going to be example projects. For this one we're
going to do a logo, so we're starting from
scratching Canva, we're going to go
to the search box and we're going to type in logo. I could do this from a
blank design as well. I've shown you how to get
to templates from there, but it's a little bit
easier to do it from here. Because what you can do is click all filters and you can go down to the bottom
and you can choose free. So that's not going
to show you any of those annoying ones
with the crowns on that you can't use. Then you can have a look, try to pick one
that you think fits the style of whatever it is
you're doing or selling. You might like
something like that, but it's quite glam, so you have to ask yourself, does it suit what you're doing? This might be, it says fashion, but it might also be
good for something like tech or something
because it's quite modern. You might like this,
but if you're doing, I don't know, crochet, it probably is not
going to fit it. It's not just about what
appeals to you personally, it's about what
fits your business. Let's say we pick this one
here for a crochet shop, so you could call a R crochet. You can get rid of anything that's on it that
you don't want. You can change the colors
by clicking up here. So let's say you want
it to be purple. I can see that
there's a dot there. Randomly, I can see
that there's a shadow. So I'm going to click on
Effects to get to that. You can see that it's blue. I want the shadow,
but I want it to be, I don't know I can do that. And then you can it just
to make it a bit bigger. You want it to take up most of the space but not to go
entirely to the edge. So that could be a good one, or if we wanted to
choose a different one. So this might work for, I don't know, a flower shop. So you can click on things to change how
you want them to look. This is a recolorable design. You can see that when
you click on it and it brings up all
these colors up here. So you could change the colors to something else
that you prefer. If there's something in it
that you want to change, you just simply click on it, type something different, or delete it if you
don't want it at all. If you want to change
the background color, you just click on that and you
change it in the same way. So you click background color and change it to
whatever you would like. I personally think that
text is a bit weird. I would probably change it
to something different, make it a little bit bigger. I think I would rotate it. I just feel like
that would work. I'm not too sure about the font. Yeah, I like that one. Obviously, it wouldn't
really be called that, it's just an example. And you could click
some kind of effect here to give it an outline. Or any of these effects, they don't really show up that well against the
black background. Okay, let's say it
looks like that If you felt like that was too simple or it is missing an element, then you can go into your elements and you
can choose something. Let's say you want some
flowers from the graphics. Then you can add in a
flower just to make it more obvious that it's flowers
or something like that. That one probably goes a little bit better
with the colors, so you could make it fit more. And then what I
would probably do is select everything
and just make it bigger because the space around the edge is
kind of a bit wasted. And then I'm dragging it so that it's in the
middle that way, and it's in that way. You can see the lines that
appear down the middle and across when you've got it exactly central and
you just drop it there.
10. Example Project: Instagram Post: Now I'm going to show you
one more example project before we move on to
the class project. For this one we're going
to do an Instagram post. Again, we're starting
from scratch in Canva, we're going to go to this
search box and we're just going to type in Instagram post. Just like before,
I'm going to go to all filters and I'm
going to scroll all the way down
to the bottom and choose free by the way. You can also use this filters
bit to filter by style. You can say you want it
square or portrait theme. I don't know how that
really differs from style. You can say whether you want some animations in it or not, which you might do
if it's an Instagram real what subject is. But don't forget, you can
change templates, you know, you can repurpose
them for any subject, but you just might
find that the style will suit one thing
more than another, and then topic as well. So lots of different
filters there. I've just chosen
the one to show me free ones, so let's have a look. Okay, let's try this one. So we just click Customize, And we can drag any
photos we want into here. Yeah, so we've got three
different frames there. We can drag our own
photos into there. We can change this text, and we can bring in our own
elements if we want to. So I'm going to do it just the same way that I did before. I'm actually going to
use the same pictures, let's say I want to do it like that and I could
say clay ornaments. I'll make that a little bit smaller so that I
can line it up with that on then I might
say handmade with love, just for you, which
means nothing whatsoever but just filling
the space really. Then I might think, okay, I like the layout, but I want the colors to
match my photos a bit more. I can click on this brown part here and I can go up to
where it says color. And then I can choose some colors here which
fit my photographs. I could say I like that green because it goes
on my tree here. Then for this leafy thing, I can choose a darker green or gray. I think
I like the gray. And I'll do it with this
little one here too now. All the colors match the photos. I've changed the text, and I think that
works pretty well. I would go to share, I would go to download, I think for Instagram, I'd probably save it as a Jpeg. And then I would click download, and that would put it
into my downloads folder. And then I'd simply go to Instagram and
upload it on there. If I wanted to make one
that moved instead, then I could bring in stickers
so I could go to elements. Oh, we've got some
interesting ones here. You could put in something like this if you wanted to make
a little reel instead. But just bear in mind,
square works well for posts, but reels are usually portraits, so they're a different size. So to get the right
size for that, when you go to search
for your template, you would instead type Instagram reel and it would bring up these
more portrait ones. So that's the example project
for the Instagram post. And in the next video, we're going to do a class
project where we're going to design a business
card together.
11. Class Project: Designing your business card: It's time for our
class projects. So we're going to design
a business card together. So I want you to bring up Canva, go to the search box and
type in business card, and then presuming you have a free Canva account
and not a pro one, then go to all filters, all the way to the
bottom and choose free. And then apply. And then just have a look through
these designs and pick one that appeals to
you and you think that goes with whatever
it is that you're doing. Now, I just want to
show you something quickly before we get
into doing a design here. If I were to click on one, it does have two pages on it. So that's an interesting
thing to note. Another thing is that
it's offering you options to actually
have them printed. And you could do
that if you like, but I would recommend that
you use another company. I'm going to just
bring up this one. So this is the
company that I use. It's called hello
print and it's at hello print dot
code, dot k. Okay? So they operate in
these countries. So if you're in America or Canada or anywhere else
that's not on here, then you'll need to find a
different company, I guess. But bear in mind,
of course you don't have to have them
printed from Canva. Just because you've done
the design on Canva. You can download it onto your computer and
then you can take that design to anyone
you'd like to have it printed or even
print them at home. I'm going to choose
a different one. Let's say I choose
this one here. This is for a makeup artist. And just like the
other one, this one comes with a front and a back. One thing to bear in mind
with business cards is they don't have the
relevancy that they used to. But they are still relevant
if you're selling things online because it's good
to just pop it in the box. And then they know straight
away when they open up the package who it's come
from and how to contact you. And for that reason these days, a lot of business
cards will say things like thank you for
your order on them. But this one wouldn't
say that on it because it's for
a makeup artist. So let's say we went into
elements and then photos. I mean, ideally you'd
put in a picture of some make up that
you've done yourself. But if you were
just starting out, you might not have very
many pictures yet. So you could go in here
and you could choose something like that or
something like that. See, all you do is you just drag in the
photo that you want and drop it into the frame where the picture already is and
it'll just replace it. I think that that one
works really well. So then you could change it
to whatever your name is. I would personally
change that font. I don't know whether I've
put a capital Yeah, I did. And then you could change your number to whatever
your number is. Whatever your site is, people don't tend to share their postal addresses anymore. But you could put
in a Facebook page, your page, in fact, a make pass. It would most likely
be Instagram. So you could put in your
handle and go into graphics. You could search for
an Instagram icon. Just be careful
where you drop it, because if you drop
it in the wrong bit, it's going to take over something that you
don't want it to. You could do
something like that. And then we've got
another side as well. You would change that one too, I think that works really well. You could keep it
exactly as it is, but just bear in mind that
a lot of people use canva, if you use this design
more or less exactly as it is with the same colors and the same pictures and stuff. There may be a lot of other
people out there with the same or similar
looking business cards. You might want to just
change things up a bit, change colors, change fonts. Just to give yours a little
bit of individuality. I want you to do the same thing, make your own business card. It doesn't have to be two sides, It can be one if you want, but choose from the
template or make your own, download it onto your computer as an image file
such as a Jpeg or a PN G. I think a PNG would be better because you're likely
to be printing it out. And then go to this
class on Skillshare. Go to the Projects and
Resources tab and upload it there using the big blue button
that says Submit Project. Now I will respond and give feedback to everyone that
uploads one on there. But don't worry about being graded because that's
not how it works. It's actually instantaneous. As soon as you submit a project, you then get a certificate to
say that you've done that. And then that will show on
your skillshare profile.
12. Bonus Tips: Time for some bonus tips, and I'm going to
show you how to do a gradient on your page. If you click on the
background of the page, just anywhere on the page. And then click at the
background color here. You can go down here and you can choose from these gradients. I really like this one. There's quite a few
to choose from. If you have a pro account, then you can change
these gradients in a much more granular way rather than just choosing from
these premade ones. But I think that even
the premade ones are really nice to look at. Another bonus tip is to
look into this apps thing. And this is from the
front page of Canva. So you just go to Canva.com
and then go to the apps. There's all kinds of
different apps here where you can add something
a little bit extra. I actually don't
know which ones of these are free and
which ones are pro, so you have to just click
around and figure it out. But for example,
you could add in a QR code into one of your
images or a Google Maps. You could, if you store your
photos on Google Photos, which a lot of people
with Android phones do, you could add photos from
that or from Facebook. I quite like this
wave generator. So if you were to click on that, you'd get this here and you
can change how it looks. I'd prefer it to be like that. You can sort of just move this along to
get different ones. You can randomize it like that, and then once you're
happy with it, you add it to your design. So it's quite a nice
thing to just like put along the bottom of
a design or something. So that's an interesting
one. Mock ups, I think. So the idea of this is you
can bring in this image and you've got a frame here into which you can insert
any image at all. So if I wanted to,
one of my products, I could just drag it into
there, drop it on the phone. And now it looks like she's looking at my product
on her phone. Which is kind of
fun and would be useful perhaps if you're selling things on Etsy
or something like that. If you're selling digital files, I think that would be useful. So that's another interesting
thing to look into. To get back into any of your
previous designs on Canva, simply go to Canva.com Make sure that
you're signed in and scroll down and you should see your most recent
ones at the top here. But to get into older ones, you can go into
projects at the side here and then designs here. And you can click all
to get all of them. As you can see, I
have quite a lot. Thanks for joining me
in this class today. I hope you've got
something out of it. I have another class
on skillshare, which is all about
selling on Etsy. So I have a look at that. It's called Getting
Started with Etsy. I am considering maybe doing some other courses about Canva. So like maybe one
about Canva Pro. So if you're interested in
that, please do let me know. Because I want to be
making the kind of courses that people want
to take part in. And if you have any
questions or comments, you can just go to the
Discussions tab on Skillshare and type them in there and I will respond to
every single one.
