1. Introduction to designing a tumbler decals: Hi, everyone. Welcome to my skill share class. My name is Eva, and in today's class, I'll share with you how to design Tumbler the calls. In this class, I will start with sketching out my design. I made personalized phase the call in Procreate. Don't worry if you're new to it. I'll walk you through the entire process. Then we'll move on to Cricket design space to set up the design such as adding texts and get it ready for cutting. And finally, I'll show you how to apply your decal to your tumbler, so it looks just right. We will have some fun exploring how to sketch and customize your design, and I will share a few handy tips to make the whole process smooth. By the end of this class, you'll be all set to make personalized tumblers that you can use or give to someone special. So grab your drawing tablet and let's get started on making some super cool tumbler de calls. I can't wait to see what you come up with. Let's get started with the first lesson. I will share with you all the tools and materials needed to make this cool tumbler design. 2. Tools and materials to make this project: In this lesson, I'm going to share with you the tools and materials needed to make this project. To create the design, you will need a drawing tablet. I'm using an iPad with an Apple pencil and I draw in Procreate apps. Procreate is a digital art app for iPad. It has lots of tools and brushes. It is easy to create anything from simple sketches to detailed artwork. You will also need a blank tumbler. Permanent vinyl, I'm using Grita Permanent Vinyl for this project. Since we're not using heat to transfer the design, you don't need to use heat transfer vinyl material. If you're using glitter vinyl, use strong grip transfer tape. Otherwise, regular transfer tape will work fine. For this project, I'm using cricket M T, but any cricket model will work. You can even make this project with the Cricket Jo. You will need fine point bled to cut your vinyl design. I use crick at standard creat mat. A scraper tool to smoothen out the vinyl. That covers all the tools and materials you will need. In the next lesson, we will start by drawing the design in the procreate apps. 3. sketching and drawing the design in Procreate: In this lesson, I'm going to share with you how I drew my design in procreate apps. Before I start, I'm going to measure the diameter of my tumbler, as well as the height. Open procreate apps and create U Canvas. Click this icon on the top right corner to customize the Canvas size. Change the unit to centimeters. I'm going to enter 20 1 centimeter for the width and 18 centimeter for the height. Make sure the DPI is 300 and tap on create. We have our blank canvas ready, and for sketching, I'd like to toggle on my drawing guide. It is located under the Canvas, and you have to toggle on the drawing guide and tap on edit drawing guide. You can change the thickness as well as the grid size. Consi with the setting, tap on done. I like to use this tray in brush for sketching, and I'm going to bring the opacity down. I'll start by making an oval shape. Lightly draw a vertical line down the center, as well as the horizontal line across the middle of the oval to indicate where the eyes will be. Then I started to refine the face. This is going to be the cheek bone, the chin, as well as the jaw line, and lightly draw the nose and ears. Remember that you're going to cut this design on vinyl, so avoid complex design as well as thin line. At the headline above the forehead. I'm pretty much done with a sketch to change the shape of your sketch. Tap on this arrow button at the top panel and click War function. Then you can distort your image. I'm going to sketch an oval picture frame, so I'm going to create a new layer, and I will draw an oval shape as a guideline. Bring down the layer and reduce the opacity. Then create new layer for the actual frame. Then go to edit drawing guide and click on symmetry. And you will see this blue circle icon place it in the center of the oval shape. This symmetry function allows you to create perfectly mirror design. Since I'm going to give this tumbler to my daughter's music teacher, I'm going to draw music icons in the remaining empty area, such as G clap, Bas clap, semis notes, crotchet notes, and so on. And I'm going to print out the sketch to see how it looks like on my tumbler. Well, I feel that this image on the center is too big, so I'm going to reduce by a few centimeter. And this is how my design looks like after I reduce the size. This is the original one, and this is how it looks like after I reduce. Now I'm ready to outline the design. We will focus on the girls catch, and I'm going to hide the frame layer. Create new layer. Bring down the opacity of this girls catch layer. To outline your image, use a brush with clean strokes, and make sure the thickness of your brush is at least two millimeter. To check on that, click on the edit throwing guide and then change the grid size to 2 millimeters. All right, The thickness is good. Next, I'm going to outline my design in the new layer. If you have difficulty to control your brush, tap on the brush that you're currently using, tap on stabilization, and track the controller under the streamline amount to the right. By adjusting the amount of your brush stream line, it will help to stabilize your strokes, making it easier to achieve smooth curves and consistent line work. I'm nearly finished with the outline, and now I'll go back to refine the lines for smoothness. Remember the cutting line will depend on how smooth your lines are. I will also add a few more details to my design such as these eye lashes. Make sure to shade your design completely and avoid leaving any patches as Cricket will identify any unshaded areas as cutting lines. I'm almost done with the design, and I have added a few details to the hair. I'm going to remove the sketch layer, and we're going to outline the frame. Create new layer for the outline frame and bring down the opacity for the sketch frame layer. Go to edit drawing guide and choose symmetry. Place the blue circle in the center of your frame with the same brush outline your frame. And make sure the thickness of your line is at least two millimeter. Once you have finished with the frame, you can remove the frame sketch layer. For the remaining empty area, I'm going to draw music icons. You can draw a simple music icon such as travel clap, base clap, a simple music notes, or even flower or leaves. I will leave this top part empty for the text, and we are ready to air drop this artwork to my computer. I'm going to remove this white background, go to the layer section, and then toggle off the background color. Then tap on this tool icon on the top panel. Tap on share, choose PNG, and air drop to your computer. All right. In the next lesson, I'm going to share with you how to set up the file in cricket design space and how to cut the design with Cricket machine. 4. Setting up the artwork in Cricut Design Space and cutting it with your Cricut machine.: In this lesson, I'm going to share with you how to set up the file in cricket design space, as well as how to cut your design with cutting machine. In Cricket design space, click New Project. Go to the left panel and click Upload. Upload the PNG file that you just a dropped from your iPad. Click Continue. Click, apply and continue. So like flat graphic and click Continue. On the next screen, click Upload. This PNG image size will be larger than the actual size set in Procreate, so we need to resize it. But first, I will create a guide. I'm going to make this square shape as my drawing guide. Change the size to 18 by 20 1 centimeter. This is the size of my tumbler. And go to the operation at the top panel and select guide. All right, so this Pin square is the size of my tumbler, and I'm going to resize the PNG image accordingly. I'm going to add text in my design. Go to the left panel and click Text. To change the phone type, you can go to the top panel and click on this drop down arrow. If you want to curve your text, you can go to the top panel and click this curve button, then you can adjust a slider to control how curvey you want your text to be. Next, I will reduce the spacing between each letter by decreasing the letter spacing amount. I'm going to zoom in and change the text color. You can see actually there's a line in between each letter. This means your machine will cut each letter separately, and we don't want that. All you have to do is click on the text layer and then go to the bottom panel. Click Combine and select Unite. Now your text will be cut in one piece. I'm going to add more text below, and I need to remove one of the design elements here. To do that, go to the shape button and select circle. Adjust the circle size to cover just that particular design element. Select the circle layer as well as the image layer. Go to the bottom panel and click slice. And now you have option to remove that particular design element or you want to move it somewhere else. I'm going to do the same thing with this music notes right over here. Select both layers together and click slice. After you slicee it, you can either remove it or you can move it somewhere else. Next, I'm going to move my text at the bottom here. I ended up change the phone type because some of the lines is too thin for cutting. Adjust the line space. Next, we have to unite the text layer, so Cricket will not cut the text individually. To do that, go to the bottom panel, click combine and click Unite. All right, we are pretty much done with a setup. I'm going to hide the square layer. Like all the layers together and click attach. Since we'll be cutting the design on vinyl, ensure the operation for each layer is set to basic cut. Once you're done with all the setup, click M. I'm going to save this project for future use, so I don't have to set up the file again. On the next screen, I'm going to change the marial size to 30.5 by 30.5 CM. Click Continue. And for the base mario, I'm going to use permanent. You can set the blade pressure to default, but since I'm using an old blade, I'll set it to more. This is the material that I'm going to use for my design. It's a permanent glitter vinyl. Prepare the mat, place the vinyl sheet on the mat with a glitter sit facing up. Align the vinyl with the top left corner of the mat, make sure it is straight and covers the grid area where your design will be cut. I'm using a tool to smooth the vinyl onto the mat. Load the met into your cricket machine and press the load button. Then after that, press the play button to cut your design. Once you have finished, unload the mat and we can begin weighting the design. In the next lesson, I will show you how to weight your design and transfer it onto the tumbler. 5. Transferring the vinyl design onto the tumbler.: In this lesson, I'll show you how to we the design and transfer it onto the tumbler. After your design is cut on the vinyl, remove the final sheet from the cutting mat, trim away any excess vinyl that you don't need, and carefully remove any unwanted vinyl from your design. For intricate design, use the tool or twisters to pick out small pieces of vinyl. Next, I'm going to use transfer tape to transfer the design onto the tumbler. For me, it's easier to transfer part by part, so I'm going to start with this girl image right over here. To transfer got transfer tape. Carefully place your transfer tape over your vinyl design. Use a scraper tool to press the tape down. Gently peel the transfer tape off the final backing. Making sure the vinyl sticks to the transfer tape. Before you place your vinyl design, make sure to clean your tumbler surface with rubbing alcohol to remove any dust, oil, or residues. Place the transfer tape with a vinyl design onto the tumbler, position it carefully and make sure it's aligned properly. You can use a scriper tool to press the vinyl design onto the tumbler. Then carefully peel away the transfer tape from the tumbler. Next, I'm going to do the same thing with the remaining design elements. Since glitter vinyl is quite thick for small design elements, I simply peel them off and place them directly onto the tumbler without using transfer tape. In the next lesson, I will share with you how to make another tumbler design and we will use different color material. And 6. Creating another design in Procreate: In this lesson, I'll show you how to create another tumbler design. I'm still going to use the same frame design, but I'm going to change the girl image. I'll begin with a rough sketch using dry in brush, lowering the opacity. I started by drawing a circle, followed by vertical and horizontal line to serve as guidelines for placing the eyes, nose, and lips. Next, I refine the shape of the face, including the cheek bones, chin, and jo line. When creating a personalized photo design for vinyl, focus on simplicity to ensure the design is suitable for vinyl cutting. Avoid overly intricate design that might be difficult to cut or. Focus on the general shape, such as the person's hairstyle, the flow of the hair, the eyes, the shape of the eyebrow, the shape of Jane, the key is to keep it simple. T Once I'm done with a sketch, I use a brush with clean and smooth strokes to outline it. Ensure that the thinnest part of your line is at two millimeter. Otherwise, the cutting line will be thin and making it very difficult to wit the design. Bring down the outline layer and put it below the frame layer. And I will erase this overlapping part. And you can also delete this catch layer as you don't need it anymore. This is optional, but I like to add hair lines on the hair part to add some details of my design. I finish outlining my design. I will remove the background, save the file S PNG, and air drop this file to my computer, then upload it to Cricket design space. And this is how my design looks like after adding some S Fiji icons. The S Fiji icons are available in my cricket design space. Simply click on the icon that you like and add them one by one onto the Canvas. Hide the square guideline and then select all the layers together and click attach. Make sure the operation for each design elements is in basic cut. I'm going to change the material size to 30.5 by 30.5 cm. Then click Continue. Set the base material. I'm going to use **** the vinyl for the bled pressure, you can set it at default, and then you can load in your material into the machine and start cutting. In the next lesson, I'm going to share with you how to with the design and how to transfer your design onto the tumbler. 7. transferring the vinyl design on to the tumbler: In this lesson, I'm going to share with you how to with your vinyl design and how to transfer it onto the tumbler. After the cutting is complete, unload a map and begin weeding your design. You can use a weeding tool or tweezers to remove the intricate parts from your vinyl design. Here's how my nal design looks like after removing the unwanted part. To transfer gt vinyl, e st grit transfer tape. I will not transfer the design all at once. I will start with the girl image right over here. Place the design with the transfer tape onto your tumbler. Make sure to clean your tumbler before you apply the design. Smooth the design onto the surface using the scraper to make sure that it sticks properly. Then slowly peel away the transport tape leaving the design on your tumbler. Then I'm going to do the same thing with the rest of the design. And here's the final look. I hope you enjoy this lesson and found it helpful. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out. Don't forget to share your finished project on this platform. I would love to see your creation. Thanks for joining me in this class and happy crafting. 8. Trying Different Designs on Various Base Materials.: Once you're done with the Tumbler decal project, I encourage you to have some experimenting with different designs on various piece material, like glass or mugs. You can draw your design in Procreate apps. Remember to use brush which has clean smooth line and avoid intricate design that might be difficult to weed from the vinyl later on. You can also experiment with different vinyl material, just like what I did here. I use permanent mat black vinyl for the wheel, and I use glossy adhesive foil in silver color for the ty part of the w for the clouds as well as for the stars. When creating a vinyl decal, be creative with your design. You could design a cute reindeer for your Christmas mark or you can add some festive elements such as snowflakes and presents. Or it could be a simple geometric pattern like this one for a coos design. This is perfect for a Chinese New Year craft project. Another vinyl design idea is to decorate your journal cover. I use gold texture vinyl for my vinyl design. I started by sketching my design in Procreate apps. For my Easter Craft project, I drew ester bunnies, ester baskets, and other related design alments. After outlining my design and removing the background, I saved it as PNG and then uploaded it into cricket design space. Then the remaining steps such as cutting and applying the designs are exactly the same as what we did with the Tumbler. And that wraps up our class today. I hope you enjoyed and feel inspired to create your own unique designs. If you have any questions or need further tips, feel free to leave a comment below. Thanks for joining my class and happy crafting.
