About This Class

It has never been easier to create your own patterns and designs and create products to sell online. This class will focus on creating three different design types. We will first learn to use Adobe Illustrator to create patterns quickly and test out those patterns on our products

We will then create a super colorful geometric design and create several different variations. Finally, we will create a custom vector illustration, create lighting and shadows to make it pop, and place it on a beautiful space background. 

There are several online websites you can use to upload your creations, I will show you one that makes it quick and easy to see how your design will look, and it is a lot of fun too!

It would be great to have some basic knowledge of Adobe illustrator and photoshop, but even if you are new to the programs, you can still learn a lot by following along.

1. Class Intro: it has never been easier to create your own patterns and designs and create products to sell online. This glass will focus on creating three different design types. We will first learn how to use Adobe Illustrator to create patterns quickly and to find out how our patterns may look on our products. We will then create a colorful geometric design and create several different variations. Finally, we will create a custom illustration creating lighting and shadow effects and making it pop beautiful space back. There are several online websites you can upload your creations to. I will show you one that makes it quick and easy to see how your designs will look. Mock ups. And it's a lot of fun, too. It would be great to have some basic knowledge of Adobe Illustrator photo shop, but even if you're new to those programs, you could still follow along and learn a lot. Let's learn together 2. Pattern Design - Setting up the Pattern in Adobe Illustrator: Let's go ahead and get started with our pattern based design. So we're gonna do, ah, repetitious pattern for this particular one. So we're gonna go ahead and do this. Illustrator, You could do this in voter shop, but this is a lot easier and illustrator highly recommend. So I'm gonna goto file new and I want to create a square document. So I feel like when you do patterns, you would have everything be even, Let's go ahead and just do anything would work because this inspector, so we can end up scaling it to whatever size we need. So I was gonna do kind of your standard nine by nine. Go ahead and create. And so one of the first things I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go and do the show the grid. So I'm gonna go up to view and then show the grid. It's a view show grid, and this is a great way to be able to design patterns because you have a great sense of space and you could be really exact and you have to be exactly patterns because just a little bit off with a pattern, it might look not as cohesive. So I'm gonna go ahead and play around. Since when we could be a little creative. Um, I'm gonna do just a simple, humble triangle. I'm just going to a little triangle shape. And I have smart guides on. And so notice. When I come up to this point, it creates that pink line. I love to have smart guides on when I do designs for patterns. And he can do that by going window our view and get your smart guides on. Okay, so it'll automatically snap to a point. I'm gonna go ahead and make this a solid triangle and let me pick a color. But that's not gonna annoy me too much. I'm gonna shrink it down a little bit. I'd be shrink it down to this size. And so now we're gonna create our pattern instead of having to copying copy and paste. All of these were gonna go use our pattern tool. We're gonna go to upto object and go down to pattern and make okay. So you can see already We've got a little pattern going on. I like to when I have my pattern. This optional. Go ahead, pop up for you. I'm gonna go ahead, make this a nine by nine. I'm gonna put a little spacing. I think some breathing room would be nice. So let's try two inches. That looks nice, but a little bit. Let's close the gap. Let's do 1.5 inches. Do we get a nice spacing? And this is what's need this tile type. You can really change your pattern layout by clicking on a few of these options. Brick by row will do it like a brick. So kind of every other one. I really love the hex option. I think that looks really modern, So I like to do the hex by column recon do hex by row so you can kind of see the shape and the pattern. It'll it'll develop. So I think I like this one. I like the size. We can always go back and added our pattern later. But this is good for now. And we're gonna go up here and we are going to save. I just do this. Ah, triangle. OK, and so where does this go? This goes over to our swatches panel at the right here. This is our new pattern. So let's go ahead and get out of this. Done no longer need this anymore. And so in the next video, we're gonna figure out how to go ahead and get this pattern loaded and how to manipulate it a little bit. 3. Pattern Design Cont.: Let's go ahead and load our pattern onto our squarespace. I'm just gonna go ahead and draw with the rectangle tool. Let's go ahead and draw across the space solid color. I'm gonna go ahead, change this swatch of this Phil toothy triangle pattern we created, so that automatically loads it within the square space. I expand it. We expand the pattern so we could go back and edit this a little bit. Make it a little unique. Let's go ahead, and what you do is you go ahead and double click on your patterns. Watch double click that we have our options panel back again, and this is where we can go ahead and change some options so we can turn it. It will go ahead and turn all the patterns so you could do something like that, which could be kind of neat. You could make it not even kind of make it a little interesting of a triangle. Continue to size, Maybe something like that. It kind of like my original triangle so we can just go back in our history. I do like the angle. I think that's awesome. So it's going to keep the angle on that. There's a lot of other options he could play around with. If you want to manipulate it, there's a effect and distort and transform. This is where you kind of have some happy accidents, and you kind of play around and you could get some really neat shapes by doing a few that using a few of these tools. I'm gonna Ruffin, you know, obviously seventies air, a little too wacky, but you can see how people can come up with fairly unique patterns by using some of those tools. Eso There's see Let's go to style eyes who want to stay within the jealousy free, distort rough and transform. Let's just try Twist. What happened? If we twisted this interesting? You do the less of a twist. That's interesting, but think I'm gonna keep with my nice We'll do a nice, simple pattern for this one. So we're just gonna go ahead and click on done. We kind of have our basic pattern set up. If we wanted to do perhaps an iPhone skin or design, let's go ahead and zoom out. We could always extend this up a little bit. We're gonna end up dragging this in photo shop. Um, so you can go ahead, delete that you can make a bigger square and apply your pattern, and so you can have, um, have it evenly on different spaces. But I'm gonna stick to a square that's the most versatile of hungry to apply it to different kinds of products, like shower curtain or a clock or a couple things. I'll show you by the end of the class how he can put it on products. So this is just a solid color. There's no texture. There's nothing exciting happening. So in the next couple videos, we could add a little bit of texture and some uniqueness to this pattern and make it something we want to buy. 4. Pattern Design - Having Fun with Patterns and Options!: I wanted to kind of show you some neat things you can do with patterns and some crazy stuffing come up with if you just experiment and have a little bit of fun. So I'm just drawing a simple circle with no fill. It just has a stroke. So has little black stroke. And I am going to mess around with some of these tools I was messing around with before. Go up to, um, see goto effect go to distort and transform. And I'm gonna mess around this pucker and blow tool. I'm gonna go ahead and click on previewing. Concede it's a really deep, interesting shapes that happened. We just take a simple circle and you apply this fucker and blue kind of effect that kind of like this shape let's click on, OK, And what's great about this tool is you can continue to apply it until you get it kind of a really interesting happened by accident, kind of, uh, shape. So I actually to do the distort and transform and do puckering bloat again and kind of see , I'm just experimenting. I've never done this Ah, a couple of times before, so we're kind of seeing some interesting shapes. That's cool. I think that's a really neat star. And that's a little bit too crazy. So kind of like how this is developing maybe something like that right there. And let's go ahead and flip this to fill and see what happens. So when I'm gonna do is I'm gonna keep it as a stroke. I'm gonna make it a little bit thicker just like that, and I'm gonna go to path an outline stroke. So now those strokes air when I expanded the stroke will stay the same size. So that's that neat little shape we just came up with and we can apply the same pattern principle. So let's go ahead and make it about this size, and we can go ahead just this for final. Probably not gonna end up using this pattern, but let's practice. So we're gonna go to object and pattern there it ISS who went to pattern. Let's go ahead and us around with a little bit. So let's put a little more spacing between this. Let's do split the difference. Let's do 1.5. Just finding that right spacing. I think a hex would look cool or brick by row? I don't know. That's a tough call. Let's go ahead and make this nine by nine. Click OK, can always go in and edit it. It's called the Star Click, OK, and what's great is when you go ahead and apply your pattern and click on Done about that off to the side. I'm gonna create our shape. We're gonna put our patterns this new mount, get our entire box, go ahead, create our shape and apply our pattern right over here in our swatch panel. And there you go. What I would probably end up doing with this pattern is I would fill in the lines with gold and maybe put it on a black watercolor texture or something to kind of really make it pop. It might be a little too busy, so I probably go in and edit it a little bit, but go in and edit. But this is just kind of an example of the kind of crazy shapes you can experiment with, and you could have a happy accident, a mistake, and come up with a kind of a neat pattern. Um, you can continue to play around with it if you wanted to. So anyway, this is a kind of a fun little offshoot. I did. So let's go and go back to our triangle pattern. We're gonna open up photo shop next, and we're gonna figure out how to really make this pop and add a little texture to our triangle pattern. 5. Pattern Design - Preparing it in Photoshop: So before I go ahead and drive this into Photoshopped, I'm gonna make this a little bit bigger of a sample size so I can kind of play around a little bit more, is going to make the triangles produce more of them. So we go ahead and delete this right here. I'm gonna make a much bigger, much bigger size. And there we already have thesis watch applied. So I have a much bigger sample set. I'm gonna go ahead and drag this. I'm gonna open up a photo shop document here, go ahead and get rid of this butter shop documents. And I'm gonna do a nice square size. And the website we're gonna use at the end of this video requires documents to be 6500 by 6500 pixels with 72 dp I So I'm gonna go ahead and continue that. Then there's our final documents. Let's go ahead and drag are triangles. And here what's great is this is a vector smart object, so I can go ahead and hold down shift, and I could expand this larger and it's going to stay in a vector format until I decide to Rast arise it. It wouldn't go ahead and get kind of the pattern we like. I could assume for this particular piece. I'm gonna make it a pillow. So it's kind of get the sizing that we like. We need to resume in. We could, and I want to kind of make this a nice camel color. So here's our background. I'm just gonna make the background. Go ahead. Double click like a beige. Very simple color. Maybe you're right around not quite as vibrant. There we go. Perfect. So now I'm just gonna double click are object that we imported in and I could make this the same color. And this is the same color as the background. If I just wanna up it a little bit, it's more subtle. Go down. I could make it darker or could make a white, but I kind of like I'm a big fan of settle when it comes to this color. So let's go like this. Not the most exciting pattern, but you're learning how we can utilize patterns to create designs very quickly. So it's only been what, about 15 minutes? We already had to have a pattern set up. We could even angle this a little bit, trying to make it a little more exciting. Right now, it's very subtle piece. Zoom out and since still in vector, we haven't Rast arise it. Let's make it a little bit bigger. So it's gonna pretty at 6500 by 6500 pixels is a really large documents. When you do little things, take a while for your computer, process it. So be ready for large documents with this. Usually that Tzipi and it goes right through. But such a large document takes forever to do simple things. So it's getting there. Let me, ah, experiment a little bit. It's a pattern. Were you can add a little bit of texture. Do not that one. Let's not do that. Let's go ahead. We apply Grady into this is well, could make it a little funky. Whoa, Raise the color so we could actually go blue to purple. And instead of doing a nice, subtle color and this is where it gets hard cause he could do so many options can look good . Uh huh. So many combinations. It just depends on what kind of look you're going for. Wow, that is crazy, but you know, someone would let someone out there would like it. So this experimenting wonder if I do other blues Blue Green Wow, that is crazy, Crazy, bright. I kind of like some of these. We can go back to what we had before, so let's do that's go back to kind of are subtle pattern right about here. Analysis. Make it a little bit darker. Let's make the triangles darker. They stand out this a little more, you know it be neat, kind of apply a gold pattern to these triangles as well. But we're gonna do that in future designs in this class. So let's go ahead and save. This is a J peg, because that's what they require. We have the right sizing, and we're gonna import it into our online store and size it and see how it looks on products 6. Pattern Design - Testing it out on Products: So we're on a website called Society Six. This is where I kind of post a lot of my designs. I tried to do one every day, and we're gonna just post are simple. One that we just created in under 10 minutes, and we're gonna pop it on a product and see what it looks like. Sums clicking on selling. There's a couple of other websites. There's one called red Rubble that you can use people like or you can use all of them and upload on many different websites cause you never know which one might pick up her stuff. So let's go ahead, sir. Graphic design, pick a couple of tags. I'm just gonna pick a cut. This is just a sample. I'm not actually gonna load this, but the more tags, the better. In a nice description. Um, just call this test. We'll continue to create products. So what's what I really love about this website is automatically applies it to mock ups so you can see what your product looks like. So if we want to know what it looks like on a clock There you go. This kind of neat we could see. Okay, the patterns a little boring. Um, if I had a little time, would go back at lots of punch of color. Eso we really kind of designed this to be on a pillow. So it takes a little time for the mock up to kind of run its little algorithm. And there goes, That's actually kind of need. Um, I would probably change a little bit, but it's a really nice, subtle pillow. We could always do circles as you saw an illustrator. We could do any pattern we want to A. So long as you know how to set up patterns bringing in the photo shop, you could pretty much create anything. So here's a pillow. We'll see how it looks like another things a mug and some products is. It's not gonna work out. So the phone, I'm not feeling it. This is more of a pillow pattern, so I would probably just launched the pillow so you can go back and it could turn all these off and I could just launch the throw pillow and click on this and then scale. It's if you want to have the patterns. I wouldn't scale too much because it's a rast arised image. Now it's a J peg, so it's gonna lose a little bit of its quality if you zoom in on the on. The pattern was kind of best design. It kind of at the level that you like it. Maybe zoom in a little bit and there is our pattern. We're gonna do a couple other designs as well in this class. So there's our little pillow that we designed in under 10 minutes. It could be a lot better if we had some time to play with it. Have a bunch of color. Maybe it's and gold texture, but we're just learning how to do these patterns. 7. Geometric Design - Setting it up: So now we're going to create a geometric pattern, so this will be different than the repeat pattern. This will be based on geometry throughout the piece. We're not going to use the pattern tool normal straighter. We're gonna hand do the entire pattern, and so we're gonna kind of stick with this triangle pattern theme on, and we're gonna do kind of more of a diamond repeat pattern and slowly changed the color. So we have kind of a rainbow kind of theme going on. So I'm just gonna do I have our show grid. And what's great about doing geometric patterns is once you have your grid set up, you could do anything you do triangle here, square here. You can really have fun once you have the exact grid set up for you. Um, so And to do that, you go to window and get your grij doing or go to view and get your grid There it is. So you'd have show grid option there. Let's go and get started. I'm gonna do a simple diamond or a simple triangle, and I have my smart guides on, so I'm able to kind of make a perfect triangle. And what I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna copy and paste this triangle and I'm going to rotate it so transform and I'm gonna rotate by. Let's see, I needed to go along this side. So what is that? 180 degrees. There we go. It's a very good to start creating pattern. I'm gonna make this a different color so it can differentiate itself a little bit. There we can zoom in a little bit here, we'll zoom in so we can kind of get a little bit more precise. Perfect. So now we have a perfect little square. I'm gonna actually create a diamond shape out of this. So I'm gonna copy this and I'm going to rotate by 90 degrees and you'll see how on building a shape here I'm just gonna eyeball some of this. There we go. Copy and paste reflect, and I just made a cool diamond shape, so I'm gonna differentiate the colors a little bit to add kind of a three d shading I'm just good at. So I'm just doing a few alignment to make sure everything is nicely aligned to each other. So let's go ahead and let's do these darker shades. And don't worry about the color choice, cause we're gonna get that to that in a moment where we can really manipulate. Manipulate this to any color. We want very easily trying to stay within the same color family. I'm just doing some small adjustments to the color stubble clicking, making sure that these air all different enough. Let's make this darker, but not the same shade lets us make it a shade lighter. Maybe, right. Nope, that's too light. I was having a little bit of a three d affect everything's They got this neat little effect . So let's not quite in the same family. So let me just double click and stay within this line right here's click up a little bit lighter. Keep it within the same shade. Okay, great. So I don't really like this color to start out with, so I'm gonna go ahead and group this whole shape together, or you can to select all and I'm gonna go to edit colors and go to adjust color balance. And what's great about this is I can go ahead and set all these colors just by adjusting the slider I don't have to sit there and manually try toe, get the shading perfect. So let's start out with kind of a warm or maybe a purple tone and we could play around, really get the right shade. There you go. Perfect. And now what I'm gonna do is I'm actually a copy and paste the shape and create a box or right next to it. I'm just gonna just this a little bit said it all lines up. Okay, So I'm gonna do the same thing. Keep that same color and I'm gonna do this over and over again to create kind of a rainbow effect. So I'm gonna go and I'm gonna make this slightly warmer and tones and maybe a deeper purple I'm just playing with the sliders A little bit never goes And now we have a purple and I'm gonna go ahead and zoom out Now that I have my pattern created and I'm just gonna keep repeating the step over and over Now I'm gonna make this warmer again, Even warmer And what I'm gonna do with this I'm gonna go up, go along this side and make all the the next the next step slightly cooler. I'm gonna make this a little bit more blue. There we go. Maybe a little bit more of a subtle change Did my color balance and it's gonna keep repeating this step over and over. I wanted them be very subtle changes, Nothing too dramatic. And this could start to pour into orange or red. And what I'm gonna do is I get a copy and paste the one I'm gonna put it next to. So if I want to keep this warm, it's nice to start with the warm color that's already warm already. So I'm gonna make this maybe orange. Just play around with the sliders, get what you need, or maybe this could slowly go toe orange, and we're gonna continue to get this repeat pattern, and I'm gonna work on this for about 10 minutes. It could just continue to do the same thing. And I'm gonna just the colors a little bit. And we're gonna go ahead and bring it into Photoshopped in a moment 8. Geometric Design - Adding Gold Accents: So I spent about 10 to 15 minutes playing around and going ahead in completing the shape. I have this nice, cool toe, warm tone transition, as you can see, as able to kind of make the colors a little bit more vibrant by continuing to adjust the color balance that we were just doing. And I had a second option, and I felt like that option a little too harsh of a transition between the boxes. So I kind of came up with this option to, and I like to zoom in before a import it into photo shop and start working with the texture ring. I like to go in and zoom in quite a bit and just adjust manually because as we're copying and pasting those boxes, it's not like the pattern tool. Word's gonna be exact, so we're gonna really need to go back in and develop all this by hand. Oh, and just make sure all the connections, or even especially with geometric patterns, you can use the grid Tulloch's well toe to help you assess everything. So once you do all that, you're ready to import into photo shop, let's go ahead and open up a new document. Let's go and open up to that size that our website requires, which is 6500 by 6500 pixels. Let's go ahead and create. Open up a new document and drag it in. Go ahead, select all this is where the magic happens. This patterns kind of need its colorful, but it really needs needs. Something else needs a little pop. And I downloaded this neat sparkle gold texture online from a website called Pecs. ALS P e x p l s. And you're able to use all of their photography. Uh, no copyrights. So I had this really neat sparkle texture, so I'm just gonna drag that into our document. And I kind of wanted to make a neat kind of huh Gold center here with its diamond. I'm gonna stretch this just a little bit. I hate stretching textures when they're rast arise because it distorts the quality. But I can do it just a little bit there. That's not a big deal. Let's go ahead. And I'm just going to take the last O'Toole, if you want to do this exactly, we could have brought it in tow. Foot illustrator done it that way as well. So I'm gonna go ahead and create a just filling in a shape. New layer and a shape dragon are gold sparkle. And I'm just gonna get the selection tool. I'm selecting our area, going back down to our texture, and I'm gonna copy and paste. And that should leave us. I think this got shifted a little bit. I named May need to lock this layers, Lockett, and go ahead and adjust this a little bit to where we like it. So it's kind of neat. Um, So I'm gonna kind of get the Dodge tool and burn tool and just kind of play around with lighting highlights and shadows on our texture A little bit bigger. Too big. Uh, let's do shadows. Just adjusting it so it doesn't look like it's one solid, um, lighting. It's got a little bit of ah shattered to it. Perfect. And I'm gonna go up to adjustments. And this is where we can really work on coloring and lining. I'm on my gold glitter texture and I'm gonna go to we got a hue and saturation. I want to reduce, Maybe reduce the saturation attack to give it to kind of take away the orange. You know, if you increase the saturation on gold, it gets too orangey. But if you reduce the saturation, it looks really nice and rich. In my opinion, I'm just gonna just in things perfect. What's great about this? I can go ahead and duplicate this layer. If I wanted to do kind of a pattern just like this, we could do This is where he could be creative because there's no wrong option. It's whatever you like. Whatever you would buy, you would buy a pillow that had this you, you know, design it that way. I love color and I love gold. So this is something I would buy. Not everyone would not. Everyone's gonna like everything you do. So that's kind of a need option. Even better, let's reduce the opacity on this. We could even just bring out one triangle. We don't have to do the entire diamond shape, so I'm gonna select in verse we go. So now we have a triangle shape. Let's delete these. I think that's too much gold. Really nice to have settled patterns. So we're gonna take this duplicate and transform we're gonna flip it 90 degrees. You duplicate this layer instead of doing it manually, you're not gonna be able to do it perfect. Like computer. Can I always like to let the computer rotate it for me? Go perfect. So that's an option as well. And so for the next video, we're gonna work on texture, work on color. See, We can adjust anything to make it a little bit better. 9. Geometric Design - Finishing it up in Photoshop: Okay, so we just and ended up applying our gold texture to a little bit of elements here. So now, but a Z amount just a little bit. We're gonna be able to adjust some of the coloring a little bit on this. And I was able to zoom in here, and I suggest doing this before. Well, not that much. Let's do Ah, 50. And I just went ahead and I made sure everything is cut perfectly so that there is no overlapping of other elements. Uh, I did eyeball it at first, but in the end, when you want to produce something that goes on a large pillow or even a bedspread, you want to make sure it's perfect. So everything has and I still need to go back and kind of, um perfect kind of where these lines intersect. So you want to spend a good hour before you import it into Photoshopped to make sure all these air perfectly connected, there's no overlaps. And then when you do your texture in and Photoshopped, make sure you're cutting it perfectly, um, so let's go ahead and soon back out. These little imperfections will be magnified when it's on a large product, so I'm pretty happy with this. But let's play around some other options. So I have this layer selected. I actually added a little bit of a texture to it by going to noise and adding noise. So I had a little bit of a grain texture to it, and you don't need a lot. I just did a very little bit. And, as you can see when you zoom in, got this nice texture to it, which would look good on something shiny like a shiny surface, like a phone. A phone case. So let's go ahead and adjust some of these colors, so image adjustments and we can adjust vibrance. See that really kind of Oh, that makes everything a little more subtle. This makes it much brighter, which I kind of like saturation de saturated just like that. That's interesting. I don't want it to bright, so let's let's cancel that. Keep it how it is. Color balance, of course. Weaken. Make everything kind of go along with a specific color, which kind of makes everything a little more even. Kind of brings everything on the same playing field with the color kind of like it. So it's good shadows. Number is playing around. There's no sign. I mean, there is a science to this, but I like to just play. I could always go back in my history to test and see if I like it. Okay, so I'm gonna click on, OK, I'm back in my history. Would a toggle when I kind of like how it was before. So keep it, keep it. How it ISS. So I wonder. Let's see, What else can we play around with? Match color? We'll see what a great Ian map would look like. Got a lot of different. Whoa, whoa, that's kind of neat. You know, this is where you you have your happy accidents in your mistakes and you find out what looks good. That's kind of neat. I really like this pattern even without the gold. If we did this and we removed the gold abortion, I kind of like it so you can create several different versions of your pattern, so that could be one that might look it on a pillow. Um, let's go back to where we were and continue to adjust. Let's go back to that. Who's the greedy int map. I got a ton of different radiance that I was able to down who I love those colors right there. I think if we did that and brought out a little bit, ah, higher contrast and got rid of the gold, that's another option. So this is experimentation. It's probably We're gonna find a lot of your hit patterns. Some of these definitely don't work. Whoa, actually like that. That is crazy. We like the colors there, but it's a little a little too busy. It was experiment a little bit more because I just have fun doing this stuff. I think if I didn't do that grain texture that I applied, it wouldn't be as messy. So you can always just re who that could be neat. If I didn't apply that green texture, I could always reimport my, um, texture and start again, and it won't be kind of dirty looking. Let's go back to what we had. That's kind of what I originally set out to create. And ah to one more thing. No, I always do a photo filter missile. Kind of add that Oh, like kind of a warm toned. Everything It's kind of nice. Let's try a sepia do that kind of really tones it down a little bit. Makes it more like an evening kind of peace. I like it a little bit toned down. It's experimentalist to underwater. Yeah, let's do CPR because that's a little bit more down them. There, we get perfect. Okay, so I like this. I'm gonna go ahead and save it as a J peg. That's already at the right high resolution size. You can always make it bigger, the larger the better, Whatever your computer can handle. And we're gonna go ahead in the next video, set this up on some products. 10. Geometric Design - Testing it out on products: Okay, so we're back on our website. I'm gonna go ahead and upload R J Peg and they go ahead and says Right here they require 6500. So we went ahead and did that. I own all the rights. Take a little bit of time to loads. It's pretty large jpeg. So as it's looting, we're gonna have to think about what products is this gonna work really well on probably a pillow. If we want to do an iPhone case, we could go back in and make it a different size. And that's no problem. So let me dio just test for now the graphic design digital pattern. Just be a test. Go and see how it looks on all these different products. That could be Nida's a canvas print. Nice score size. So go ahead and keep it His canvas print. Um, oclock would be kind of neat. Always scale it just a little bit. Maybe right there could be any. I might need to go in and brighten it a little bit. That's why I love singing on mock ups to get to really test it out and see what I look like . I'm thinking I need to kind of Brighton, Brighton, everything. Just a tad photo shop and re exporting a little bit darker than I'd like. We'll see how it looks on a pillow. There's a pillow that's really neat, actually, might remain the gold because I think without the gold, I don't know. It's great to have a lot of different options so I could have a gold piece where I could have what words? Just the the texture, the triangles. It was going to save that. I think I like that option. Toggle ing ones, I think, say it doesn't look really good on this style of fellow because the square interesting shower curtain, I guess that could work some of these products, you're gonna have to design them in certain aspects. So this coffee mug the it's gonna wrap all it's gonna be this rectangle shapes, gonna wrap all the way around. So you'd want to design your pattern a little bit differently. If you're designing for a specific product, let's go ahead and go back. This really need to kind of see how your pattern would look on things. Then it helps you readjust your idea so it looks good on about six or seven of these products, but if I wanted to do a a phone, I would want to go back in and adjust. And we're gonna do that in the next video. 11. Lightning Bolt Design - Vector Drawing and adding Gold texture: we're gonna have a little bit of fun with this one. We're gonna actually draw a shape and put a little bit that gold texture to it. Bring it into photo shop, and we're gonna be ableto make a cool space background. So I actually do, like, a little lightning bolt on kind of a cool space background. Kind of more of a retro eighties kind of feel to it. So I'm sticking the pin tool, and I'm just gonna draw a what I think is a lightning bolt. You can always adjust this with our direct selection tool. I was gonna make a cool whatever I think would be a cool looking at some angles to it. There we go. Kind of a cool eighties Thunderbolt. Here we go. That was quick. So now I'm gonna go ahead and flip it to fill, and I'm gonna bring it into a Photoshopped document that you need to open up a new one. Open up a new one are same. 6500 pixels even make it bigger if you want to. But for the forsake of showing you guys made it much bigger, my computer would take forever to load things. I was going to drag this thunderbolt then kind of make it not take up the whole piece because we would have flexibility with our background. We've already saw what we've loaded it into products we can zoom in and out. And if you make your main focal point kind of smaller, you're able to kind of zoom in a little bit in the background, could be cropped without a problem. So I can already see just a little bit of noodling I need to do with my thunderbolt now that it's filled in. I wanna make sure that angle here is equal to this angle here. Maybe even make the skinnier They're together. Just little things we're doing make it a little bit better. Course I'm doing these really quickly to kind of show you my whole process. My whole process would really take a couple hours, but this is a very condensed version of what I would normally do. Okay, so there's our thunderbolt. We're gonna take this glitter gold texture that we use before. I'm gonna go ahead and rotate this guy so we don't have to zoom in too much on this texture . Rotate him 90 degrees. Now, what I might do is I might duplicate this texture. I'm just duplicating it. And this is just a really quick way to do it. This is not actually the proper way, but it gets the job done. I'm just extending that texture a little bit. So now when I drag it over our thunderbolt, I only have to make it a little bit larger to take our thunderbolt, get our magic selection tool. There it is selected. I'm going to select the inverse. Now I'm selecting that. And let's go ahead. And I just got a copy and paste And there's are cool center Thunderball. What I'm gonna do now, I'm gonna create a black Just making this a black overlay. Been kind of cr gold vulnerable A little better. I'm actually gonna zoom in, do a little bit of detail work with shading, actually, let me zoom out just a tiny bit more. Maybe 70. Ah, maybe 50. Okay, so I'm gonna add some shadows. I was getting ah lasso tool, selecting our gold texture and let me add some shadows. So let me start up here. This will be a shadow and that probably would be light, so this would be a shadow, too. Right down here. We'll see how this one works. And I want to do a burn tool at a little bit of shadow, and they want to make it a highlight to There we go. I'm just brushing it, getting a little darker here to the bottom, A little lighter here at the top. So kind of a neat three D effect we just created. I'm actually gonna see if I could create the shadows on this opposite side that might actually look a little bit better. This is just where you experiment a little bit, How fun we take the burn tool. I'm just brushing it with deeper strokes toward the bottom. The shadows are like the mix up shadows and highlights. Wow, that's really adding to it. Ooh, that's neat. That's perfect. But I want to redo it because I little picking. So let's go back and let's do what we did. But we're gonna keep it on shadows. I think that was a little bit better. A little bit better than highlight. Let me just do one highlight. We might need to de saturate this a little bit. So let's go to color balance. You make a little blue. But I wanted to look too yellowy. That was my I feel perfect. They're neat little three d thunderbolt. We should come in under here again. I need to add a little bit more of a shadow of here. There we go. Perfect. There's a Thunderball. I would probably go back in. And this little two Carini for me. I don't like that part. So I would go in with probably the clone tool. Clean that up a little bit. Make that Not as staticky looking. Great. So let's go ahead and zoom out. We're gonna do the texture in the background. Space background next. 12. Lightning Bolt Design - Add a Space Background: so I was able to spend a few minutes, get kind of the shading kind of how I wanted to add a little more traumatic shading here in the corner. And I think I'm ready to start the back around. So let's drag in the space photo. I got it from pixels. So I have the rights to be able to use it on the products, which is really important to make sure you have copyrights or you purchase it. I'm gonna move this behind our lightning bolt, and so we're really gonna need to tone this down quite a bit. I really want this lightning bolt to just really pop out. So this is way too busy, so we're really gonna need to screen this in the background. So one of my thoughts was to create a new layer, and I'm just gonna create a Grady it layer. So when you go ahead and just fill it in any color doesn't matter. Double click and add a greedy into it. I want to add a nice, dark rich Grady int. I really like this transition. I'm just double clicking this and I'm going to be able to make this a lot deeper. Want deeper colors? I really just need Maybe I do need three colors making everything really deep color and just a little pop of this. Maybe maybe a little more purple than pink. Make that deep is well, make. Let's make this almost black. Still keep a little bit of that navy blue, dark blue. So this is gonna be our base ingredient that's gonna be underneath our space layer. So I'm gonna go ahead and bring our space texture on top. And I am selecting my space, uh, texture and I'm going up to my blending modes appear, and I'm gonna be able to screen it back do luminosity, which is one of my favorites, and I'm gonna be able to reduce the opacity. You don't need the stars so vivid and also what I could do Now, what's great about having this extra layer down here, So I don't like how the radiance going. I can change it so I can bring a little bit more purple into the mix. I could make the purple deeper like that. I can even change it so that it's a radio. You know, that's an option reflected. That's kind of neat. We go back in almost like a galaxy. Look at that. That's neat. So what I did is I went to style and it reflected. So it's going to reflect the Grady in like that. That's kind of neat. And I'm just adjusting everything accordingly. Now have this kind of galaxy stricken cross and it's still busy. So I think what I'm gonna have to do is delete some of this texture behind it. So I'm gonna just get my eraser tool, Let's see. And I'm gonna go ahead and start deleting this a little bit, Missy. Some just experimenting and playing around with stuff. Solid color can kind of look cool, But the next video I'm gonna get the eraser tool. Let me just go ahead and cut this video off and we'll do that in the next lesson. 13. Lightning Bolt Design - Fine Tuning: Let's go ahead and start are racing. So I got my eraser tool and I'm just gonna erase the background. Just a little bit of this. We don't need quite as many stars going on just maybe a little bit in that center galaxy part. There we go. So I still think this needs to be a darker blue. Let's go back, Make that all the way dark. Maybe I need to adjust this middle blue Maybe that's words. There we go. If I made that black, that's kind of neat, but I want to have a little bit of color. Let's do maybe right there. And so now I want to kind of have this thunderbolt pop out a little bit So I'm gonna add a little bit of a drop shadow I'm gonna double click the thunderbolt and just do a drop shadow I'm gonna really make it a long shadow Really extended outwards a little bit Give it a sense of distance Perfect. And I can even go to adjustments on if I need to make it brighter have more contrast or less contrast. There we go. We're getting there. And what's great about this is I have a lot of extra cropping ability here. So if I want to do an iPhone product, I can zoom in on this and have lots of extra background. If this was all the way across, I wouldn't have a lot of cropping ability when I loaded this onto a product image. So it's good to have not lots of wide background. Background extends outward quite a bit. So I want to fly in Tunis background just a tiny bit. And let's see, what can we do here? But if we added photo filter, we can ah di Vibrance. There's a lot of different ways we can edit this once. Do I wonder if we did a radiant map? This is where you experiment any mess around. I don't think that's gonna work out. Ooh, that's nice and subtle. I really like that. Actually, we might need it. Pick another. I think I like that. Okay, so this is where the experiment you figure out. OK, that was before mrs after, So I think that's great. I really like this. Ah, So I'm gonna go ahead and save a J peg. I want this to be one version we're gonna create maybe a different version, so we'll do this Version one. We could pop it on some products and see how we like it and see if we need to make any more adjustments. I feel like I wanna sharpen that just a little bit. I'm just going to sharpen the galaxy. Stars got to go to sharpen Great. I'll re save as a JPEG will pop over to our Web site and see what it looks like. 14. Lightning Bolt Design - Testing it out on products: So we're gonna go ahead and upload our lightning image to see if we need to adjust that background. Not 100% happy with the background yet. So let's see what we need to do. I want to add something else going on in there. Go ahead and load it in. So test graphic design digital, but gold lighting bold. Anything else that would help us? Tagger product with search S e O for search. Okay, so here we go. We increase the brightness on my screen and see two o'clock. How does it look on a clock? Probably wanna zoom in a little bit on it. That's kind of neat. It's a o God and save that one. You night not work for all the product. So it's really hard to get this rectangular pell. Oh, really perfect. Unless you actually design it for that rectangle shape. That's where you don't always have to do a square like I do for deciding for a certain product. If I did right about there, that's gonna go ahead and load it on the mock up of the pillow. We'll see what this looks like. It was my favorite part of the process. Michael's Kennedy. I could totally put that on my couch. Um so couldn't save that bread spreads kind of interesting. I don't know if I would really go for the bedspread, So maybe right now it's just a pillow, baby. A. I found skin. What we need is iPhone case. That's neat. Kind of like it zoomed in a lot. So maybe it looks cooler, like right there. You really see the lightning bolt and same thing. That's the iPhone skin. And this is the iPhone case that wraps around a little bit. So I really like how that looks. And it's got a pre load, different sizes. So we need to make sure it fits on all sizes of different phones they cell phone cases. So there's fit really good. The great save enable see how quickly were able to create something. And I have a goal to create a design every single day. And I think I'm gonna post on my Pinterest and instagram one product design that I do every day. It could be really need so that a bag would be interesting. I don't know if anybody would buy the bag, but I still I think it's good as iPhone case. And maybe a print. Maybe somewhere would like the bag, but it's got to go back. And I think that's gonna be it for this one. Yeah. The T shirts. You really have to design specifically for the T shirt. Um, I'm gonna do maybe a typographic logo or to be able to put on a T shirt for a future class . Okay, so that's it. I think we got our products. I'm gonna go ahead and launch this, and we can go back in the photo shop. I feel like I'm actually pretty happy with this background. Um, I might do one more bonus lecture to see if we can spice it up just a little bit. 15. Lightning Bolt Design - Let's Tweak some more for fun!: we're going to see if we can play around some textures for space background. What they love to do is borrow from other designs I've done because I spent all this time doing background. The text during work would be nice to not have to repeat that process over again. So I created this little almost watercolor esque background using a Photoshopped brush, and I was able to kind of do it over and over and over till it kind of created this kind of watercolor background. This is for a pillow. I designed just a little home sweet home pillow texture, but it has kind of similar colors that we're working with kind of purple blue, which is really popular. Go and bring this in and it may or may not work. That's OK, were just experimenting. So I'm gonna make sure lightning bolt is above the structure. And right now it's on a blending mode. Hard light. Let's put it on Normal, Uh, actually do luminosity. Get some of that background color so it may not work. I'm just playing around with some blending mode. Options might be a little too dark, this texture what could work go back to color. Burned. Yeah, that sometimes Just a test. Just we're just is kind of a bonus lecture toe. See how it could really play around with this background. So I'm just going into our Galaxy stars, and I'm just increasing the brightness. Just a tad. Think that really helps bring this out. I really like a high contrast. It's really good. Bring the stars at a little more. Maybe that's all I needed to do was increase the brightness a little bit. Go to color balance. Just never know what little things they're gonna be able to do for you Here. Bring in shadows. That's not making too much of a difference. Let's go down to our base layer. I'm gonna go ahead and delete this so we could see our base layer. This is our base layer where we have our radiant that we created with the reflect pattern. When we try Diamond Pattern. Who this could be a potential winner. I like that. I like this kind of line. It's creating. Whoa. Didn't mean to do that spring that darker. They're all accidents. That's where some of your good stuff comes from. Let's kind of tweak this a little bit. What if I made it brighter? More subtle, More blue? I like the purple. Let's get the retro. Always think pink and gold when the Katy's So that's an option. Wow, that is crazy. You doing all purple, I think. And the deeper, deeper colors. That's interesting. I need a dark, dark, dark color to be that one. You hear some dark ones? Okay, I like how how we had it before. That's neat. I was gonna bring this texture out a little bit on this A little bit. Perfect. Fine tuning it. Okay, so that's a start. For now, we can always do lighting effects, a bunch of other things. But I think I'm gonna stop at this point. I think you guys have a good idea of how to design a couple of different things using patterns, using textures, drawing stuff in vector, bringing it in and adding textures and creating patterns. So lots of fun you could have with this I have a blast doing, and I'm gonna try to create one ah, design every day and put it on a product and put it online because you just never know where what's gonna sell and what's gonna be popular. Um, and you could go from there
