1. Class Intro: Hi, I'm Tushar and welcome to this Design Foundations class in this brief class will talk about what design really is, and about the foundations that a work of design built upon will begin with the basic idea off what design is and from there with talk about how design is different from art, well, then move on to the fundamental elements and principles that good designs build on and finally will bring it all together with a short and find a class project. This classes for you if you are a new learner or even a non designer trying to understand design or if you just love to listen about all things designed. By the end of this class, you'll have a different perspective of how you look at design and a better understanding of how to think about it. So if you're excited and ready, let's dive right in
2. Introduction to Design: hi. In this lesson, introduction to design, we often talk about how where something is designed. We can just feel it when a work of design is done well and good design makes us feel happy . Great designs and great designers keep changing this world. But what exactly do we mean by design? Do you even understand what design really is? With so many professional roles being identified as under design, like designing a narrative for a video game designing how a band should look or its identity designing how the letters off a typeface should look, or even designing the experience for the user, it makes it rather challenging for new learners or even non designers to try to understand what design really is. Let us try to trace it back to its roots. Most people, when they begin on the journey to understand design, are merely people who are just not intimate with it, from this misconception that the design of something is how good it looks, how good something looks alone is to understate the definition off design and not understand what it really is at. Our design is not the aesthetics, but the aesthetics is a part of the overall design. In fact, the overall design of something is a some off many factors. The functionality, accessibility, usability, aesthetics, user experience. A good design is one created with all these factors in mind, design can mean many things to many people. We can go about debating if design is objective or subjective or if it's an art or science . But to put it in brevity, to start with the most basic idea to further understand the complexities of design at its very roots, design is problem solving, and the goal of all good designs is to create a solution that makes parts of our lives better by creating something on our conveying a story, believe or idea. A good design always begins with a clear goal in mind, and every design has different and golds. You may designed to solve the problem that you understand personally or a problem. Someone else or not, the brand or another community identifies. You may be designing to have the runners run a little faster, or you may be designing to capture the cultures off a place in a typhus, or you may be designing to convey the idea off the best burgers in the world. The goal is what leads the design and not the other way around. The goal could be to make more profit, reach more customers, design a better product, a redesign, an interface that is confusing for the users to conclude. Design is problem solving, but goals to come up with better solutions to share ideas, create better products, better services and, most importantly, better lives.
3. The Difference Between Art & Design: hi. In this lesson, the difference between art and design, art and design are often confused, and the difference between the do is not so clearly understood. The fact that both art and design share the same knowledge base on the visual elements and principles to create respective pieces off work. It makes it a little more challenging to make out the fine line of difference that exists between them. In worst cases that even referred to interchangeably to state the most basic characteristic that differentiates the both from blending completely. Art is expression design, this problem solving, though debatable, the reason why the design is not always the same for why we choose to create art a wise versa. Our is mostly appreciated for its beauty and existence, which could mesmerise its many viewers but also not mean anything to some. At the same time, design is applauded for its functionality ugly designs, often forgiven for their superior functionality. But also bad designs don't go unpunished. Art is subjective. The art piece, which could be anything from a painting to a sculpture, is the expression off the artist's feelings and emotions and thoughts and is realized in whatever way the artist sees fit that best beings the artists emotions out, expresses them what the viewer interprets off the art piece. Subjective as well. The viewer might find it challenging to understand the peace or what the artist was feeling are trying to convey. I might even develop a personal interpretation in the first place. Even when a piece of art is not understood are interpreted differently, it would still be considered art. A piece of design at that point would be deemed unsuccessful because all good designs have a goal to accomplish or a thought off purpose to fulfill a piece of design, failing to fulfill its intended purpose or goal even worth end up. Suggesting the users and interpretation of their own is a bad and failed design where art makes you think good design vicious did not make you think at all. What one might consider a piece of design may be considered a piece of art by another. In fact, designers come together to create a piece off work that is considered art in its final form . We can go on debating this objectives and the objectives, but that's not the point. The point is there is a difference between art and design, but it is very fine
4. The Basics of Design: hi. In this lesson, the basics of design. If we start by defining the word basic, it means forming an essential foundation off starting point. We can also say the essential foundation off something like the basic need for the existence of human life. Our air, water, food, shelter, etcetera. The basics of design of the essential foundations for the existence of design are visual elements and principles called the elements of design and the principles of design. All design ideas, good or bad, are created using and can be broken down to this basic elements and principles. The understanding off what the elements of design are helps a good designer realize a design by breaking it down to its fundamental or basic parts. The understanding off the principles guide the elements to create a more pleasing and functional design. Understanding both the elements and the principles help you figure out how to create or design what is in your mind or what is acquired. It also helps you break down and understand the design on the design decisions off other designers. As you dive more deeper, though, you'll find the elements and the principles are not the same set off ideas identified are accepted by everyone. And that's the point. The elements and the principles are not laws that your design must follow, but it helps when they do, and they should. Most of the time you'll find out different resources will have a different understanding off what the elements of the principles are. You might find resources listing fewer elements of principles, or they might include many more that you may have no idea about how you might find the elements and the principles getting mixed up. You see, there isn't a validated or universally identified or accepted understanding off what the elements or the principles off design are or what they should be in this foundation. Class, though, will therefore stick to the elements and principles of design that are more commonly identified and understood. Once you haven't understanding off these, you can find your way and build from there
5. The Elements of Design: hi. In this lesson, the elements of design the elements of design are the most basic off. Fundamental parts that helped to create the design by combining are using them together as discussed in the previous lesson. The elements of design are not validated or universally identified or accepted list. Different resources have a different understanding off what they are and what are identified us, the elements sticking to the most commonly identified elements. They include line shape, farm scale, space, color and texture. These elements are what help you to define your design. You use these elements to give a form to the idea off the overall design. Let's talk about them. A line is the most basic element off design, the personality of your lines. It's weight. Color texture conveys a lot of meaning to the world design that, at very least, is built using upon lines. A line could be straight broken off baby. You decide what best defines and describes the lines of your design When lines come together and join the create a shape. The lines defined the boundaries off that ship. The most basic shapes, like the triangle and square. With the absence off lines would be nothing. There won't be shapes. Shapes can be geometric or organic. Geometric shapes are what can be drawn using dramatic tools like ruler and compass. Organic shapes are what resemble the shapes found in nature. They tend to be more free and abstract, the existence off a shape in a three dimensional space or when the shape becomes three B, which referred to it as form every physical and real thing or object possesses. Our farm scale is the size of an object relative to other objects around it. Space is referred to the area, the elements of design take up or that they do not. The space that is occupied by the elements in a piece of design is called the positive space. The space that gets created, intentionally or unintentionally by the absence off the elements is gone the negative space . In some cases, space could also be referred to the dimensional space. An object off form suggests to be existing in color, a topic as deep as the ocean color is what describes one off. The visual characteristics often object on a work of design. Your use of colors, holes and conveys meaning in fact, each color is suggested to be holding a meaning off its own, often based on the belief of how or what that color makes you feel. But color is subjective. Your choice of color, based on what you felt about it, might not be the same as what the user feels about it. Texture is another element that describes the visual and the physical characteristic often object. A work of design. It mostly describes its surface, which could be visual only I could be physical and exist in the real world. It describes how the object or the work of design would feel like if you could touch it, it could be rough, smooth, hard, soft, bumpy, etcetera. You might not use all the elements at once in your work, but combinations off them. The more you dive into understanding these elements, the more better you get at making design decisions about them.
6. The Principles of Design: hi. In this lesson, the principles of design the principles are what guide the elements. It helps create a more pleasing and functional design rather than being rules that must be obeyed. The principles are guidelines that can be followed. There is no checklist off. What principles should mandatorily be included in your design or what makes a design great . In fact, you are welcome to go against or quote unquote this obey the principles given that you already understand and know what the purpose off that principle is and what it could convey by going against it again. Different resources have a different understanding off. The principles don't get overwhelmed trying to find out how many principles there actually are. Many times the same principles get dumbed under different names. The point is to understand the concept and not go about memorizing each one by all the different names. So sticking to the most commonly identified principles to get you started and not more confused. They include harmony, balance, contrast and emphasis. The principle of harmony is about a pleasing hole created by the existence of its individual parts in music, when multiple loads up late together and they make a pleasant sound. They are said to be in harmony. The individual sound off each note might not be as pleasing as when they all come together and create a more pleasant hole than their individual existence. Alone in visual design, when the elements exist in agreement in a way that they complement each other, they create a more pleasing visual perception off the existence as a whole. The principle of harmony is about the relationships between the elements about how the complement each other and allow a more pleasing and consistent hold to exist. Balance refers to the distribution off the visual elements or the visual weight off a work of design from a website to a shoe, everything is balanced in some way. A most basic way to analyze how a piece of design is balanced is to draw an imaginary line , vertical or horizontal over a And then comparing the divisions can tell you a lot about the design itself, Semitic allow and asymmetrical other types of balance that you will often hear about at this point. Keep in mind when speaking off balance, we could be referring to how an individual element is balanced or how the overall design, which is made up of multiple elements, is submit. Trickle balance is when visually dividing an object horizontally, vertically or diagonally, you find its parts to be identical or similar. Asymmetrical balance is the lack off symmetry, or when you visually divide an object horizontally, vertically or diagonally, and find the parts not to be identical or similar. A piece of design could be asymmetrical in reference to its visual elements, but at the same time be symmetrical in reference to the distribution off Visual Wait contrast is the noticeable difference between elements. It describes the relationships between them. Contrast guides you to what is important and tells you about what is not. Two shapes can be contrasted by the color, shape, scale, etcetera. Emphasis is the special attention guided towards an element. Emphasizing the most important part in the work of design helps to grab the user's attention without having them to look for it. You need to be sure the right elements are getting emphasized in a work of design and not accidentally, the unintended ones to make it easier for the users and not perplex them. One might rebel by arguing how a few set off principles can decide what makes a good design . Well, of course, the principles of design are not laws, and so will end this lesson on this quote from the book Universal Principles of Design. The best designers sometimes disregard the principles of design. When they do so, however, there is usually some compensating merit attained at the cost of the population. Unless you are certain off doing as well, it is best to abide by the principles.
7. Your Class Project!: Hi. And congratulations. If you made it this far, I hope this class helped you in some way and you found a better way off looking at and thinking about design. Now we finally get to the fun part your class project. This class project is rather very brief. And I would really appreciate you taking time to finish it and something. What you are going to summon are two things. One in a sentence or two. Describe what design means to you or what you understood of design from this class. Don't contemplate too much. Just right. A line describing how you feel about decide to and this one is fun. Choose up to three elements out of the ones we learned about in this class and try to Conway one of the principles out of the four real and here using only those three elements . So let's say you choose shape, scale on color out off the elements and balance out of the principals. In that case, you will try to convey drylands using only shape, scale and color. Now, if you understand the project, we can move on to how you will carry out both the project you can do it using any medium, digital or traditional. Do it in your sketchbook or in your phone. There are no restrictions. You can finish both the projects on a single bait or in a single image file. You don't have to submit multiple files with that said I will now be waiting for your project submissions. Thank you for taking this class.
