I created this class as a follow-up to my first class, the Artists’ Guide to Printify Print on Demand using Etsy or Shopify Store.  If you're brand new to Printify POD, I'd recommend that you watch my first class, first :)

Hi!  I’m Kari, an artist, designer and teacher. I spent over 22 years growing and managing my own traditional product-based online e-commerce business until I closed that business in 2021 to follow my life-long dreams of being an artist.  My goal was to begin building a new business that would enable me to keep creativity front and center and allow me to grow as an artist and grow my art brand.

Although it does require work and commitment, Print-on-Demand really is the easiest way to get your art out into the world and into the hands of customers and collectors who are excited to connect with you and your art!

And - adding that special touch of personalization to your products is a great way to get your designs and products noticed!

CLASS OVERVIEW:

  • First we will talk about what types of products are available for Print on Demand and specifically which products are the most popular for personalizing.  We will also take a peek into why people seek out personalized products and what needs they can fulfill.
  • Next we will talk about design considerations that are specific to personalization, and which of the two methods available will save you time and make the fulfillment process easier.
  • Then we will use Canva to create a two-sided design for a personalized mug.  We will get familiar with the available templates, discuss some font considerations and explore the two different ways of setting up your template file so that you can decide the best method for you and your design style.
  • We will take the finished artwork and create your final template product in Printify.  You will learn the importance of item SKU #s and how they can work for you to streamline your fulfillment processes.
  • From Printify,  we will publish our finished product to our Etsy store and add the customization fields to our listing, and then I will walk you step by step through the fulfillment process and submitting your order to production..
  • Last but not least we will take a look at some Class Project Inspiration to get your creative juices flowing!

BY THE END OF THIS CLASS you’ll know not only how to add personalized products to your Etsy POD store BUT ALSO the most efficient way to create your designs and how to set up your Printify account to streamline your fulfillment.

All I recommend to have with you as you watch this class is a notebook and something to write with so you can capture all the juicy details that will guide you toward making memorable personalized products with print on demand!

I am an abstract and mixed media artist living on a small farm in Wisconsin.  My abstract art combines gritty textures with glowing ethereal washes with grounding opaque brights.  I delight in the geometry of pattern and designing art for fabric, home goods and inspirational journals.

I also have an extensive background in business, as I owned a traditional online product-based company for over 22 years before I retired from that to put my creativity and my art business front and center.

I love to teach and share with others what I've learned along the way -- especially as I learn to apply my business background to my growing art business.

1. Design & Sell Personalized POD Gifts: Hi everyone. I'm Kerry Barnes and I'm an artist, designer and teacher. Welcome to my class how to design and sell personalized items with print-on-demand, where we take our print on-demand journey a little bit farther and dive into the lucrative possibilities that exist when we add those personalized touches to our print on-demand products. I've created this class as a follow-up to my first-class, the artist's guide to print. If I print on demand with your Shopify or Etsy store. So if you're new to print on-demand or you're just starting to explore the possibilities. I would suggest that you check out my first-class first. After spending 22 years managing my own traditional product-based business, I've come to realize that the easiest way to get your artwork out into the world is through print on-demand. And if you're looking for a way to stand out from the crowd, adding that special touch of personalization is a great way to get your designs noticed. People love personalized gifts because they help us to celebrate life's very special moments such as welcoming a new baby or purchasing a first home, gathering for a family reunion or celebrating a milestone birthday, even tying the knot or toasting the bride to be creating personalized print on demand products comes with some special considerations and some new steps in the fulfillment process, which we'll be covering in this class. First, we'll talk about which products are available for print-on-demand, and specifically which of those products are most popular for personalizing. Next, we'll talk about design considerations that are specific to personalization. And which of the two methods available will save you time and make the fulfillment process easier. Then we'll go into Canva and create a two-sided personalized mug. We will explore the two different ways of setting up your template so that you can decide on the method that works best for you and your design style. We will take the finished artwork from Canva and create your template product in printed y. And I'll take you through the relevant printer PHY settings and show you how product skews can work for you. To streamline your fulfillment processes. From printed phi, we will publish our finished product to our Etsy store and add the customization fields to our listing. Then I will walk you step-by-step through the fulfillment process and submitting your order to production. And last but not least, we're going to take a look at some class project inspiration so we can get your creative juices flowing. By the end of this class, you'll know not only how to add personalized print on demand products to your Etsy store, but also the most efficient way to design and also how to set up your printer phi account to streamline fulfilment. I'll, I recommend that you have with you as you watch this class is a notebook and something to write with. So you can capture all the juicy details that will guide you on your way to creating memorable, personalized products with print-on-demand. So grab your notebook and a pen and let's get started. 2. Popular POD Products to Personalize: If you're new to print on-demand, you may be wondering what types of products you can put your art on. This does vary widely depending on which provider that you choose for this class. As in my previous class, we're going to focus on one of my favorite providers, which is printed. Here we are on the printer phi home screen and printed phi has over 750 products to choose from. And if we click into here into the catalog, you can see all the different categories. And the nice thing is that they're adding new products and new categories all the time. Now because this class is a class on personalization, we're going to focus mainly on those products which are really lend themselves to personalizing. And fortunately for artists like us, there's a lot to choose from. Some of the most popular products for personalizing include mugs, T-shirts. These are wine tumblers, canvas tote bags, beach towels, baby blankets, Christmas ornaments. And there's a lot more. These are just some of the most popular. One benefit to adding personalization is a higher perceived value. People are willing to spend more for an item that is uniquely theirs, whether they're buying it for themselves or for a gift. And this results in a higher profit margin for you, the artist. So why do people personalize? People seek out personalized items or gifts for a variety of reasons. I've just outlined some of the most popular ones that I've seen. The first category is obviously for gifting or keep sakes. And that would include wedding gifts. Bachelorette, Bachelor or bachelorette gifts or party gifts are very popular. There's obviously the welcoming a new baby or baby milestones such as baby's first Christmas. There are birthday gifts, of course, milestone birthdays for people passing 30s, 40s, 50s, that kind of thing. People seek out personalized things to identify as a group as well. That would be things like corporate gifts or apparel. Or if they're having a team-building event, they would order a personalized t-shirts so that people could identify as a team. I've seen people to design for family reunion t-shirts or family holiday t-shirts. And that, even like Christmas t-shirts for a family group, they all get matching T-shirts for Christmas, for their Christmas picture. That would also include t-shirts for groups that go on cruises or church groups that are doing a retreat, things like that. A lot of this will fall under the apparel and t-shirts. And then lastly, what about people who take pride in their home or their family name? And I'm thinking of things like monogrammed bath or kitchen towels and even customize mugs and other drink. Where one thing to consider though, is that this is a value-added service and it's not quite as completely hands-on as some of the other non-personalized print-on-demand products. And as you will see in an upcoming lesson, it does take a little bit more time and a few more steps to fulfill a personalized order. Now that you have a better idea of the types of products that you can personalize and some of the special occasions that you can design for. Please join me in the next lesson as we talk about our design considerations and choices that you can make when it comes to personalize designs for prints on-demand. 3. Art & Design Considerations: It may seem like there are infinite choices out there when it comes to curating or designing your designs for print-on-demand. However, I think it'll simplify things a little bit for you if you consider that there are two basic ways to organize your design. In addition, the method you choose will make a considerable difference in the time that it takes for you to fulfill your personalized design orders. So the first way to organize your design would be to fully integrate the personalization into the design. And usually this would include texts with some kind of special treatment or formatting applied to it, such as arched or curve text as I show here. It might also have some special color treatment and usually the texts will fit snugly into the other design elements. Now the second method involves displaying the personalization almost as a separate element from your main design as shown in the example to the right. This would usually include just a simple straight text, either at the top or the bottom of your design. As you can see, we still have the fall vibes as a more advanced treatment to the text. It's curved, it has a special coloring, but the actual elements that we're going to personalize the barns name at the bottom, Barnes family farm is just very straight texts in one color. As we dive deeper into learning the steps required to fulfill a personalized order, I will walk you through both styles of designing. So it's you'll have a better understanding of the steps involved. And you can make the choice that's best for you and your design style. Lastly, aside from choosing your personalized design method, you'll also have to make sure that you're creating designs that follow the basic guidelines for producing art that works well for print on-demand and the digital printing processes. And I cover this in greater detail in my previous intro class in less than six. So if you're new, you might want to check that out. But generally you're going to want to make sure that you're creating a high resolution file of 300 DPI. You'll want to have the proper background for your product that you're designing for, either transparent or white. And you'll want to make sure that you're avoiding any details that are so small that they're not going to print well. The first step in creating any new print on-demand product is to create your design. Please join me in the next lesson as I walk through creating a new personalized design in Canva. 4. Create Your Design in Canva: This is an example of the project that we're going to create together in this class. And it's a, keeps a gift for the nature loving bride and groom. And it is created on print defies 12 ounce enamel camping mug from district photo. My goals for this lesson are to help you get familiar with the mug template. And we'll talk a little bit more about that. We're going to discuss some font considerations when you're creating your designs. And I'll illustrate for you the two ways that you can use to create your artwork. Of course, you can create your design in any software that you're comfortable with. This could be Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, procreate for the iPad. And there are others. You just need to be able to create a high resolution file of 300 DPI. And it needs to be in a format that one of the three formats that is accepted by print defy, this would include a JPEG or a PNG or an SVG file. Today we're going to create a design file together in Canva. And I chose Canada because it's beginner friendly. It has a free version and it has everything we need to create most of the files that we need for print on-demand. So the first method we're going to use is where you would edit all of the personalized elements in Canva. So this is if you want to use curved text or special treatments in the actual areas of the design that are going to be that are the personalized parts. This method can be a little more time-consuming, but it does offer the greatest range of font choices and then design options as well. We're going to create a new file here in Canva. So we're gonna go up to create a design. And we're going to do a custom size. The dimensions for the mug file are 2,400 by 750 pixels at 300 DPI. And I'll show you where to find that information in print a phi. In the next lesson. I'm going to create our design. Here we are with our blank file and print a phi does have designed templates that you can download for many of the products that they offer. However, I've noticed they're only in Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator formats. So I've created a canvas friendly PNG for you to use that you can find in the resources section of this class. I'm going to import the template by dragging here. I want to make sure that it fills the background like that. And as you can see on the template, it shows you the center of each side of the mug, which is nice, gives you the a specific size that you need, which is what this is. The safe area is inside this green dotted line. So that's what we're going to concentrate on. And the red area is the full size that you need to upload, which is what we've created. This black area, I've noticed on the template that they have given us, says the print area, the full area that is going to be printed, although there isn't really a black area on here. So I like to make sure that I stick within these safe area for all my important elements. I found that is important to use a template like this to design both sides at the same time. And it's especially important, e.g. if you're designing several of the same style mugs for maybe like members of a bridal party. So you want really going to want there to be consistency across the mugs with only the names and dates changing and then all the other elements remaining fixed. So the other way to do this would be to create a file that you're going to upload just for this side and then just for this side. But if you're constantly uploading those smaller pieces, it's gonna be really hard to have them line up across your different orders. And that'll make a lot more sense as we get going here. But that's one reason why I really like to use a template and create and get everything set for the whole mug instead of doing it in different pieces. So we have our template here. I'm going to adjust the transparency of it so we don't need it quite that bright. And I'm going to lock it to the background so that when I'm moving my elements around, it doesn't shift as well or get, or get selected as well. Then once I have this created, I like to keep this as a master for all the mugs that I would create. So I'm just going to duplicate this page by clicking this plus here. Then you're going to import your artwork. And you can either use your own artwork that you digitized. Or I'm using this option today for our example. You could license artwork from another company. And one company that I really like for this is called creative fabric. They have a lot of artists contributing and I find that their fees are pretty low. So you'll find a link to create a fabric in the resources section. And if you're looking for some extra inspiration, I would highly recommend checking out some of their designs. Okay, I'll start by designing the main part of the mug by uploading this mountain scape. And what I realized is that you can't actually lock the background in place. I actually lock the whole page so you don't want to do that. You're going to I was getting that confused with another program. So I'm going to have to unlock the page, but if this is in the background like this, it shouldn't cause you any trouble. So I'm going to drag my mountain scape over here. And then if you just click on the handles, you can drag it and size it. And I want to line it up to the center here. And then I wanted to include texts over the mountains that reads, let the adventure begin. I'm going to select the Text tab to insert some text a little bit bigger so you can see it. And we're going to let the adventure begin. And then I have done a little digging and I'm going to use a font called isomer script. I assume. There it is. Let me go and then I'm going to use this handle and drag it over to my mountains. And I would like this to be curved. So I'm going to go into effects. Hit the curve and you can see it's way too curved. So you can adjust it with this slider. I'm going to bring it out. Just like that. Like that. I feel like this whole thing needs to be BJ over a little bit more. So that the text itself is centered. Now on the left, we're going to add the elements that will be editable. Going to pick this little tree, tree bunch tree cropping. Again. I want to center it here. And we're going to add, I'm going to copy this text over. For simplicity. We'll put the couples names up here. Okay? And then for this, we're going to also add some texts that shows where they got married. But for this, I want to add something not quite as scripty called articulate. And we're also going to then copy this Control or Command C and then Command V will just duplicate it really easy when you use the same font for the date, center that as well. So once you get it looking the way you want it, we're going to delete the background by clicking and tapping Delete. And then I'd like to update the name of the file. This is fine. It says let the adventure begin to auto-fill that for me. And I'm going to call this one because this is the first way to do it. And then we're going to hit Share. Download. Png is fine. Make sure you click transparent background. And we're just going to do the current page and hit Done and download. Now I'd like to explain the second method that you can use where you create only the static elements in Canva and then you use print devised text layer option to edit the personalized elements. So the elements that are going to be changing. The benefit to this is that when someone places an order, you can quickly and easily make the updates right there in print device, which will save you a lot of time. The downside to this is that compared to Canva, the number of fonts that you have available to you is quite limited, and you only have the option of using straight texts. At the time I'm recording this print a phi offers 47 different fonts to choose from. And of those, I was able to find that there were 33 of them that were also natively in Canva. I found it helpful when designing to know which funds were available in both programs at a glance. So I created this PDF cheat sheet for you, listing those fonts so that you can easily see at a glance what your choices are. This file is available in the resources section of the class. Also, by choosing fonts that are available in both programs and enables you to create art working Canva that can be added to a mock-up outside of printer phi. As I find sometimes that some of the printer fi mockups can be somewhat limiting. This photo, e.g. is a mockup that I purchased on Etsy that shows both sides of the mug at the same time. And if I hadn't created a complete design of this in Canva, I wouldn't be able to do this nice mockup. Here's the file we designed using the first method. I'm just going to make a copy of this so that we can make the edits we need for the second method. And I'm just going to drag the template back. Don't think we're going to need it too much, but I'll just put it in place there. Now the fonts that we used in the first method and the first design are not found in print. So to use this method, I'm gonna make some second method. I'm going to make some substitutions. So I'm going to substitute for this isomer script. I'm going to substitute something called Dancing script. And it looks pretty good. I'm just going to make it a little bit bigger. Make some adjustments here. And we're going to make a change over here as well. Now. In order for us to edit the brides and grooms name in print a phi. We can't use curved script. So I'm gonna take this and I'm going to take the curve off. None. We go. Okay? And because I think that looks a little silly, I'm going to rearrange this as well. So I'm going to put the trees up top there. Okay. And then articulate also is not an option. So we're going to use one called lotto. Can see it looks pretty similar. Changed. We're good. Okay. So now we have fonts that are available in print defy, and any texts or elements that we're going to be changed are not curved texts, they're just straight text. And really I'm only putting this here in Canva, the names that we're going to be changing to make sure the placement of the other elements like I had to adjust where the tree was, e.g. when I'm satisfied with the overall layout, I'm going to delete the text that will be changing from this file in Canva so that we can then add it back in print. And this will be very obvious how we're gonna do this. In the next lesson. I'm going to make a duplicate of this in case I need to come back here and make small adjustments to the file. I won't have to start from scratch, so I'm going to do that. But for the file then I'm gonna send over, I'm going to delete these elements. Okay? And then again, we're going to change this name. This is the second method, so I'm just going to call it, let the adventure begin to end before we download it, we also want to make sure to delete the background. Then we'll just share. Download. Transparent background. Just want page for click, Done and download. Now we have created two files using two different methods. The first one or acquire editing the personalization in Canva, and in the other, you can update the file right there in print defy. Please join me in the next lesson where we will use these files to create your template product in quantify. 5. Create your Template Product in Printify: Okay, Now that we have our art files created, it's time to apply those to our template product in print of phi. So you'll want to log into your printer via Account. And if you don't have one yet, It's free to sign up. And I've included a link for you in the resources section of the class. Also, if you're just getting started, I do a very detailed walk-through on how to set up all the settings in your print f phi account. In my previous class, the artist's guide to print a print on-demand. So you can check that out as well. So once we're logged in, we're going to select our products. So we'll go up here to the catalog. Click on mugs. And we're going to search camp. So we're looking for those camping mugs. And they actually have two different styles. We're going to go for the one with the kind of brushed metal rim. Click in. You can scroll down here and we're going to click start designing. And here we're going to add our artwork from the first method that we went through where all of the personalization is added in Canva. And to do that, you can either click onto my device and then pick the file from your computer. Like that. Or real quick, I'll show you. You can also drag the file in from like if you have it on the desktop like I do. So I'm just going to drop it in there. And usually it's sizes just ripe because it is the exact size of the template is the exact size of the file that you need. So you just want to make sure that it covers the entire print area. And it does. You want to double-check over here the resolution and make sure it is 300 DPI. You can click up here to preview the design on some mockups, which is great. This is front right, left. Let's take a look at the left one. Looks pretty good. Then the other side here. And what you may find like I did, is that you might need to go back and forth a few times to get your artwork in Canvas sized and arranged just right. I would probably make this file it just a tad bigger, but it looks pretty balanced the way it is as well. So let's go back to Edit. And if you did want to do a new design, you can simply just hit the trash can right over here and upload a new file. But if you're satisfied with how the mockups look, you can click down here at Save product. And for now, we're going to save this product as a draft. Now we're back on my products page. And once we're here and once we have one product created, It's really easy to make a duplicate just by clicking this icon right here. On the right. You can see it says copy here. And now we're going to create a mug template file using the second art design that we created. And that's the one that we'll be using the personalized texts layer tool in print a phi. Let's click to edit the design. We're going to click on this artwork which we are going to discard the trash can. Going to add the second art file that we created by clicking and dragging and see it's missing all of the personalizing. This one doesn't have any of the personalized texts yet, just these static elements. Once we have the background added, we're going to add the text. So if you go down here, you'll see where it says plus, a little plus sign and an ad design. So we're going to click into that. And print defy allows you to layer several designs or files onto a single product. And instead of choosing my device, we're going to click the next selection here, which is custom text. Here you have some basic editing capabilities. You can select the font here from the drop-down. You can change the alignment here, and you can change the color. And as you can see here, they have a variety of some stock colors which I find to be pretty harsh. And you can also add, which is really nice, the actual hex code in, right in here. If you're not familiar with hex codes, matching your text color to your design can really up level your work. So let me just jump over to Canvas really quick and show you how easy it is to find those color hex codes just in case you're not familiar. Okay, so here we are in Canvas. Say we wanted to change this color. You can just highlight really any element. And you're going to click up here on. This color patch. There's two ways to do it. You can either click on here to add a new color and you'll get the option of the color picker or the eyedropper. And you can hover over any part of your design that's on here and pick a color. So we could just grab that and it'll change the color. It will also display the hex code right here. The other way to do it is if you scroll down a little bit farther, you'll see a section here that says photo colors. And if you just actually in any of these sections on the left, if you just hover over any of these swatches, it will pop up the hex code number, and that is the number that you'd use to plug in two right here for the text, for the text color. But for now we're going to leave this one black. The other two, you can make a duplicate of the texts. And then here's also the trash can. Okay, so let's say we're going to add the names first. And those are going to be, if you remember, we're going to use the dancing script is quite large at the moment. Let's type in. And then if you just click, sometimes you have to click off and click back on. And it will select the, you'll see the handles pop-up so that you can, very much like Canva. You can click and drag until you get it to be the size that you want. We've got some extra characters there. And this is nice. You can see these two little dots here, that's the center. And then we can just align that up with the center of that side of the mug. The other way you can adjust the sizes if you want to just make some small incremental adjustments, is that if you look over here to the right where it says scale, and this is a percentage. So you can kind of go up fractional percent percentages if you really want to fine tune your design. So let's click that and then I'm just going to duplicate this. And then the other, the location and the date, we're in the lotto font. So we'll click that. Click in here, center it and duplicate. The date was the same font. So I've actually inserted a name for my example here. But you may want to create your product template using something like maybe couples name here, e.g. because remember this is not the actual product that we're sending input to production. It's just a template that we're going to use and edit with our customers actual information. We're gonna be going more in depth into these things in the personalized item fulfillment lesson. Alright, so let's take a preview of this and see how it looks on a mug. The right-hand side. Nice, and the other side. Looks good. Then if you're, again, if you're happy, you can save the product. And we'll also save this one as a draft. We now have our template product in printed five, but there's one more thing we need to do before we publish it to Etsy. Please join me in the next lesson as we walk through some printer PHY settings as they relate to fulfilling personalized orders. 6. Printify Settings & Magic of Product SKUs: As I've mentioned, the product we've created here is only a template and we don't want this accidentally sent to production before we get a chance to update it with the information that is actually on our customer's order. In this lesson, I'm going to walk you through a few settings and print a phi and explain the importance of skew numbers. So to access your order settings in your printer phi account, you're going to click on the store drop-down at top right, this is my demo store. And you're going to click into manage my stores. And then you're gonna go for your Etsy store. You're going to click this little cog over here to access your store settings. And we're going to click into Preferences. And if you scroll midway down the page, you're going to come to the order approval section. With Printer Phi, you have two choices. You could do manual or automatically after a certain period of time. The automatic option allows for a very hands off option of keeping your orders flowing in to production. Especially if you have a larger volume or even if you're gonna go on vacation and you don't want to worry about checking your orders. And at first glance, it would seem like if we want to offer a personalized items, the only way to prevent the orders from just automatically heading to production before we've edited them, is to use the manual selection. If you don't have a huge volume yet, this is probably a fine option for you. You would just click Manual and then you would have to touch every single order that came in and send it off to production manually. However, there is another less obvious option that you can choose that will allow those non-personalized orders, like your stock, t-shirt designs, e.g. to flow through. And we'll hold those personalized orders to give you the chance to add the personalization. So I'm going to walk you through how that would work right now. The first key to this would be to select if we go down a little bit farther, this button here, the show all orders as opposed to the show only those orders fulfilled by printer phi. And I'll show you the significance of this in just a minute. The second key to this has to do with what's called a skew number for your products. And that is assigned to each product that you create in print. So let's take a look at one of our new camping mugs that we created. So we'll go over to my products. And we're going to click in. And if we scroll down to the variants section, then we want to click on this little down arrow here to open up the detail. Here you see the SCU number and print a phi will assign a unique skew number to every single product variant that you create. Then the SCU number is published into your Etsy listing when you publish an item into your Etsy store. And it's this number that gets matched up from your Etsy store to your printer phi catalog. And let's print a phi, know which product it is that the customer ordered. However, when print, if I can't find a match for a given skew number, then it's going to automatically assume that it's not a printed byproduct and it will place that order for that item under your other orders tab. I'll show you that in just a minute. Let me show you where that skewed number is an Etsy. This is one of my demo listings that I have. And all you need to do, if you scroll down to the inventory and pricing section, here, you will see that skew number. And all you need to do is edit this number here to prevent this template product, not this one, but the one we're going to upload it in a minute from being matched up and sent to production automatically. So let's hop back to print if I go to the orders tab. Okay. So just to clarify here we are on the print my Orders page. And so if we check that show all orders, you're going to get these two different tabs at the top. You'll have printed phi orders and other orders. And you can toggle between the two. When you edit that skew number in your Etsy listing and print, if I can't find a match, you're going to find any orders that need customization will go right here underneath this other orders tap. Keep in mind that if you do decide to use this skew altering method, you will be able to have some orders processed automatically, while the orders that require customization will get placed on hold. However, you do need to remember to check this other orders tab and see if there are orders waiting to be personalized or imported. Now that you've selected your order approval settings and you have a better idea of how skew numbers work in print or five, please join me in the next lesson as I walk you through publishing and completing your personalized Etsy listing. 7. Publish and Complete Your Etsy Listing: In this lesson, I'm going to walk you through the basics of publishing and completing your Etsy listing. If you're new to this process, I'd suggest you watch my first course as I go through this step-by-step in great detail. Today, we're just going to focus on those settings and selections that pertain to and are specific to publishing a personalized item on Etsy. On the printer phi side, the process for publishing a personalized listing to Etsy is basically the same for items that are not personalized, but there's just a couple of things I wanted to draw your attention to. So we're going to focus on this one right here. One thing that I like to do is for my titles, for my personalized items, I like to tag them with like a double zero. And that will make them sort to the top of your product listings. So they're going to be the ones that you're accessing to, make copies of and make changes to on a regular basis. So I like to have them sort to the top. And then the other thing I'd like to do is have them named. What I'm going to edit the SKU number because I'm going to use the editing skew number process. And so in Etsy, I'm going to change the skew number to something that makes sense to me and doesn't match up with the numeric excuse number that printer fire science. So I came up with Camp mug dash wedge for wedding, ADV for adventure. I also updated my description from what print a phi offered and made it a little bit more fun and salesy. Celebrate the happy couples new life journey together with this classic enamel camp mug customized with the brides and grooms, name, location and wedding, which is optional and dated wedding also optional. And then I go on to elaborate a little bit. You can also make these changes to the description in Etsy if you like. And this was the other thing that I wanted to mention. Print if I default to automatically assign a new shipping profile if you don't change this drop-down right here. And if you don't want to make a new shipping profile every time you upload an item. So if you have already made a mug and you have a shipping profile assigned, like I do. You're going to want to make sure to pick that before you publish your listing. So I'm going to select the camping mug. For now. I think I'm going to hide this in the store. I don't want it to go active on Etsy right away. So everything looks good here. And I'm going to hit the Publish button. And then we'll head over to Etsy to get this listing ready to accept the personalization information from the customer. So here we are back in Etsy and I'm gonna go over to the right here. And this is my demo account, my active listings. If I click on draft, you will see here's the camp mug that just came over. So I'm going to click on the camp mug to access the details of the listing. And we're just going to highlight some of the items that you're going to want to pay most attention to, and especially those that have to do with the personalized aspect of this item. So as we scroll down, you can see all of the mockups came over from printed phi. And if you have ones that you're creating you to add them there, you would obviously change the title here so that it would include all of the special tags and SEO search that you need for a good Etsy listing. Here it's already a chosen about this listing that another company or person is going to make it because that's handled by print DeFi. It's in the mugs category. And then you can, these are all optional settings. If you want to do the colors or if it's dishwasher, microwave safe, things like that, you can pick that. Here. I might choose wedding because it's a wedding gift. Scroll down further this description. If you didn't edit this already in print to file, you're going to want to edit it here, of course. And with personalized items, I'd also recommend that you repeat the personalization instructions which we're gonna go through below. You might want to repeat them here in the description just so if people don't look at them in one place, they actually look, see at them in another place and they have two chances to understand what they need to do to complete this order. Here, our production partner is already tagged as printed phi You would here, under the tags, obviously add all your 13 tags to help with your SEO. And here we get to the SCU number that we were talking about before. So if you're using the manual method and you're looking at every single order as it comes in, you don't have to edit this skew number at all. However, I like to have my non-personalized items just flow through and have my personalized items held for me. So I'm going to edit this right here. And I had come up with, as I said before, Kant mug, can't move when ADB. And that way it won't match up when it hits print a phi and it'll go into my other orders tab. And then the most important thing here is that you're going to want to toggle this personalization to on. And this is going to give you a place to indicate what information that your customer is supposed to include. They'll give them an idea if there are any special instructions are size limits. You can also tick here, if the personalization is optional for some designs, it would make sense to not need personalization. It might look fine either way. So then you would tick here if they didn't have to. But I think for this mug, it's going to look a little bit naked if we don't require the personalization. So I'm not going to tick that. You can limit. It plays a character limit, total character limit here if you want. So they don't write a book, but I usually just leave it and it's not a problem. Let's see. So here we might say, Please enter the custom names names, location. Again, I'm going to repeat that it's optional. And date also optional. That you would like to include. Also say we cut and paste so certain of the spelling. Then you just want to verify that your shipping options are correct. And the last thing down here is to make sure that there's your return policy is in place. And this is the one that I've selected. Otherwise you can change policy and select a different one. And when we're already, then we just hit Publish. And here's what the published listing looks like. And as you can see here on the right side, are the fields where your customer will enter their names and the date or whatever is required for your design. Okay, we're just about done. Now you're ready to accept an order for your personalized listing on Etsy. Join me in the next lesson as I walk you through the steps for fulfilling your personalized item in print defy. 8. Personalized Print on Demand Item Fulfillment: Here we are. The last step is order fulfillment. Let's take a look at how your incoming orders will look and the steps that you'll take to fulfill the order and submit it to your print TV production partner. So here we are in Etsy and placed an order for the listing that we created so that I could show you what it would look like when this personalized order comes through on your mind Orders page. As you can see, it was really nice is that the personalization that has been requested on the order shows up right here, right on the orders list. So you don't have to click into the detail of the order to see what type of personalization you need to apply to this item. The other thing that's really nice is that the skew that you have edited is listed right above that. And you can match that up to the item that you haven't printed phi that you will be updating with this personalization information. So let's head on over to identify and see what this order looks like on that side. So here we are over in print defy. And because I am using that skew editing method, I won't find this order under the print defy orders tab here. In fact, it will be found under the other orders tab. And there it is. And one thing to note is that sometimes it does take a little bit of time for the orders to import from Etsy into print defy to this other orders tab. So if it's not there right away, don't panic. They say it can take up to 2 h to show up. So if we click into this order here, we can see there's a Select Product button because the reason that it ended up in the other orders have is that printer phi doesn't know what product we want that should be associated with this order. So we're going to be selecting a product before we go up here on the right and import the order. And before we select a product, we have to actually go back into our products and select our template, edit it, and save it as a draft. So we're gonna do that right now. We're going to simply navigate over to the my products area. Find the template product that we created, which is right here. We're going to make a duplicate of it. We're going to edit it here. If you have decided to create a design that contains elements that have to be edited in Canva, such as that arched or circular text. This is where you would have to go over to Canva, create that new file, export it as the PNG, and then import it into print defy here. So I think maybe now you can really see the benefit and the time savings you can have by creating a design that only needs the printed text layer to be edited like this one right here. So I'm going to click here and add the new personalization. So then when we get done editing, of course we can preview. Make sure it looks good. When the design is edited to your satisfaction, you're simply going to save the product and save it as draft. One more thing that I wanted to do was edit this title For are the customers product. And I'm going to leave the SCU number and I'm going to put a dash here and then I'm going to put the customer's name just like that. Then it'll be easy to pick out. Now that we have the new item created, we simply are going to head back over to the orders tab. Click into that order. So we'll click Select Product, pick that new customized item, highlight it. Click this arrow onto the right, and then you can click confirm. I also wanted to draw your attention to here, automatically import orders with this product variant. You do not want to check that because that would create a skew number to match up in printed five for this particular customized version of your product, which you absolutely don't want to do. So we're going to click confirm, and then we're just going to import the order. And it gives you one more chance to confirm that you want to import this product. For this order. It'll give you a confirmation here, which is great. Then if we go back to the my orders print defy orders tab, you can see now this order is now in the print defy orders tab. The little blue on-hold button is ready, which means you can now mouse over this and go ahead and click that to submit your order to production. Now that you know the steps required to design, published, and fulfill a personalized item in printed phi, It's time to get creative. Join me in the next lesson as we do some creative brainstorming together. And I prepare you to do the class project. 9. Creative Brainstorming & Class Project Inspo: The project and design combinations that you can create with this are so vast and limited only by your imagination. In this lesson, I'd like to help get your creative juices flowing by sharing with you some of the designs and products that I've created. The first category I wanted to touch on was t-shirts and specifically milestone birthdays. These are very popular, obviously for gifts. People turning 30, 40, 50, etc. In this example, people turning that were born in 1973, turn 50 this year. And so I chose a t-shirt that I believe this is the comfort colors t-shirt 17. 17. I'm not mistaken. And it is a two-sided t-shirt. And you can do it in white with a colored, some kind of a colored graphic like this. Or you can just do the solid color. If you're interested in creating T-shirts like this. I have a full t-shirt tutorial in my first print on-demand class. The second category I want to talk about are ceramic ornaments. And I'm showing here just a couple of ideas. One is for babies first Christmas, and the other one is a family Christmas. And you could design different graphics, different numbers of stockings where they could pick the number of stockings to match the number of people in their family, etc. But these are really fun and popular. The third category I wanted to revisit actually where the camping mugs. And this is just a couple of other ideas for the camping mugs, which are quite popular as well. This is a happy campers design. I don't know about you, but I have some friends that are very into camping and they love to accessorize their camper and get coordinating family dish wear and things like that. So this would be great for that. And these camping mugs because they there not breakable, make great gifts for kids as well. You can do kind of a goofy for younger kids like this Zander one with the funny monkey. Or you could do a little bit more elegant like this. Bow Rainbow with the emily name here. Baby blankets make excellent gifts. This blanket that I'm showing you here is the 30 by 40 monkey blanket from printed mint. They're super soft. This is the one thing you need to consider though, when you're creating for these blankets, even the smallest one, this monkey blanket does come in to larger sizes more for an adult or a bedspread. Even the smallest file is too big for Canva if you're going to try and do it all in one shot, it just the DPI gets too low. So you're going to need to design it in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator or something like that. Unless you can figure out a way to like maybe piecemeal the header and the footer or just do this part here. That might be okay. But for something, this whole full one, it's just too big for Canva. And lastly, wedding party gifts are huge and this is some drink where that I'm presenting. The first, the one in the front here is a wine tumbler. And then of course this is a coffee mug. And there's lots of ideas that you can do with this. This is the monogram with the bride's maid or maid of honor or even Bride. And this here is a, the birth month bouquet. Birth month bouquets have become quite popular. So you could sketch a birth month flower for all the different months and then have like maid of honor or something like that here. Also popular with wedding party guests is, of course, t-shirts. So you can keep that in mind as well. So obviously I'm just scratching the surface here. In the styles presented are really all over the board. Whereas I feel like the most successful shops will create or feature artwork, a cross-products that has a consistent look and feel and really speaks to a certain niche or group of people as opposed to trying to be everything for everybody. So that's something to keep in mind. And I hope that some of the ideas presented here, we'll maybe fan that creative spark in you so that you can go out and create products that reflect you and your personal style and what you want to share with the world. 10.
