1. The Mystery: Have you ever noticed
when someone is smiling, they are not smiling
only by their lips, but also with the eyes. Or when we say someone
is talking friendly, it's not about choosing words, but also about intonations, up and downs and silence. What about visuals? Do we have silent
storytellers and visuals? Hi. My name is
Hadis Hadis Maliki, and one of the
fields that I have studied is animation direction. Anyway, in this class, we put on our detective hat. We make experiments in our lab. We do experiment
and make results, and then analyze them maybe
in this detective project, we can discover one of
those silent storytellers. This class, you don't need any special material
or any background. You can use whatever
material you want or know you can work
digital or even know, you can just cut papers and
take photo with the mobile. You're watching this class. So are you ready? Put
on your detective hat, and let's get started.
2. Draw Shapes: Okay. Okay, let's get started
and create our experiment. Here, we want to fill three different papers with
three different shapes. First, I choose a composition. I draw some horizontal lines and fill each paper between
these horizontal lines. And for the top one, I draw it in half. So I want an empty space
on the top right section. Now, let's Enjoy filling
the space with triangles. Between the lines,
draw triangles, play with the shapes with the size with the
angles of the triangle. Feel free and play with
that. Position them. Some of them go in
front of others, some hide on back of others, some stand on the tip of them, and some are floating. I draw them freely, and you do the same. Draw triangles between
the horizontal lines. And keep the top right
section empty and black. Okay. Now let's make another
experiment this time with another
shape that is circle. I draw the same composition. My composition was
horizontal lines. You can do whatever
form that you want, but keep it the same in
the tree experiment. And again, I keep that
top section blank. Gather whatever circle
things that you have in your home or
office to draw circles. You can draw with
your hands too. Here I have stances, a placeholder for my meter, a place for eyebrow
gel and a compass. Use them and draw circles
in your composition. Here I fill the space between
the lines with circles. I draw some with my
devices, some with stances, some with my hands, and look how we can play with
the place of the circles. Some of them rest on the lines. Some of them are on
top of each other. Some of them are hiding
on the back of the other. Some of them are, like in a row, like they're a family, and some can be on half. Filling the space with
circles is so satisfying. You should do that yourself. Draw your own circles and
take a photo of that. Now, let's finish
our composition, and it is like this. How do you feel about it? Let's go for the
other experiment. And now time for third shape. Can you guess what is it? I tell you, let's first design the composition that we had that is here,
horizontal lines. Okay, circles, triangles,
and now deformed blobs. Yes, I choose now deformed
blobs and play with them. I draw them, some of them
are resting on the lines, some of them are
hanging from the lines, and some of them are laying over each
other layer by layer. As you are drawing these shades, ask yourself about the feeling. What feeling does
this shape give you both while you are drawing them also when you look at them. Here I draw big blobs and let them rest on each
other layer by layer. I like that. I like that. You draw yourself, ask
yourself about the feeling. And now we have
three experiment. Let's go for the next phase.
3. Paint Shapes: Welcome back. It's now time to
paint our shapes. Here I use red color. You can use whatever
color that you like, even you can use
only black pencil. We just want to
give personality to our shapes and make them bold. This is the first time I'm using Gah in my class on the camera, and I'm amazed how vibrant it is on the
camera. I love it. Gah is a water soluble medium, but you can use other mediums, whatever you like,
pencils, acrylic. Even you can use
only cardboards. You can cut triangles from cardboard and do the experiment. What is important for
us is the experiment. Now time for another color. Here I use yellow. Using a thick brush, I cover the center
of the triangles, and then I use a tiny little
brush to cover the borders. If like here, there is
something that you want, you can clean that with
a napkin, no matter. One It's so enjoying. Now let's pick another color. Which one blue or Turkos? Blue or Turkos? Which one which one? Which one? Turkos win, yes. This time, I pick Turkis and you choose
whatever you like. Okay? I make some paint ready with
water, mix it with water, and then again, cover the
center with a thick brush, and it's so satisfying. You should do it
yourself and enjoy that. Look at here, the
shapes are emerging. And think about it. What is the story? What What is that triangle
there is telling? What is the other one
telling to that one? If it was a city and you
were walking in that, what was your feeling
in that city? Think about it. It can be a city that you
are walking in that. A city of triangles. What is the feeling
by walking in that? Keep this side blank, and we have something to do
with it in the next phase. Now let's repeat our experiment, but for another
one, the circles. Here I paint the ones that I choose with
Turkos is no rule. I just choose circles and
paint it with the color. You do that the same. Look how flat are the
colors with gouache. You can use andry other mediums. If you use watercolor, that'd be something transparent. If you use acryl, that can cover the
paint underneath. You can use cardboards,
as I told you. You can work digitally. For example, you can use Photoshop or you
can use Procreate. You can also use AI. All of them are okay and you
can share that as project. What is important is
the experiment is that you think about it
and tell me the feeling. Hey, it's my turn. Hey, who are you? I'm yellow. Okay, it's your turn. Let's paint it with yellow
and what a beautiful yellow. I love it. Let's
cover the inside, and then we go for borders. It's so satisfying. You see this, you watch
this with faster speed, and you should do it yourself. You should do it yourself. Just pick a pencil, pick whatever medium
you have, and try that. And look how shapes are coming. They are coming alive. We go for another color, and that is red. You see, I keep the same
colors in our experiments. I keep the same composition
that is horizontal lines, and I keep the same colors
for all of the experiment. Imagine these circles are talking to each other
or are talking to you, or imagine this is a city. How do you feel by
walking in the city? Do you feel safe? Do you feel motivated? Do you feel comforting? Do you feel
everything in motion? Think about it and write it. No wrong or right
answer, write it. It's finished, and let's go
for painting the other one. Time for painting this
complex composition. I love it. It's full of shapes layered by
layered over each other. Let's first pick red
one and paint them. If this was a city, how would you feel
by working in that? In fact, I don't think I
would work in the city. My feeling is that I would
be more flying in this city. It's like everything
is flying blobbing. What's the relationship
between these? What one of them is talking
and saying to the other. What is this one that is hanging from the horizontal line
is saying, is feeling? Is it so lazy or is it so hot, and it's like it is
melting or what? It's my turn. Who are you? I'm yellow. Okay,
it's your turn. Let's paint some of these blobs, the formed blobs with yellow. Let me tell you
about an expression. As you paint these shapes, you might feel such a
focus in your mind. That is flow state, and it's a very useful state
for your mind and brain. Do this experiment, and
while you are doing that, think about the feeling. Think about the application. Think about the city. Think about using these
shapes for what situation. And now it's time
for Turkish color. This city is a strange
city. Do you agree. It might be really strange city. It might be an island, like a forgotten island. You might wonder why I
don't recharge my paint. Well, that's an eddy trick. I have cut when I
recharge my paint, so it's like my brush is magic. Let's plainly paint these
shapes and amazing. You see the lovely colors. You see how the shapes are emerging and activate
our imagination. And when it activates
our imagination, then feelings come to life. Feelings emerge,
the shapes emerge, the imagination activate,
and then feeling emerge. Think about it. That is what we want from
this experiment. Very beautiful, very beautiful. Now we have this
one full of blobs. Okay, here we have painted
our three experiments. We have three of them.
Wonder formed blobs, one of them circles, and one of them triangles. We have also a blank section on top right that we will
do in the next phase. But just for now, look at them and tell me about your feelings. A feelings that come
into your mind. Comfort, energy,
discomfort, unsteadiness, whatever comes to your mind. And the

blank section on top right that we made it blank intentionally as we were
doing the experiment. Here, I want to add a text. For example, I
write the princess. You can write whatever you like. But I write the words and alphabets in harmony
with the shapes. So here I write THE and the other alphabets and characters in harmony
with triangles. Imagine this is a
poster of a movie. What the movie could be about? What might be the
plot of the movie, the story of the movie
with these shows, with this type of
writing the Princess. Now this one, again, we write the same words, but with harmony with the shapes of this one, that is circles. I write THE and the
other alphabets, very circular, very
close to circles. As you write your
word, think about it. If this was a poster of a movie, what might be the plot about? What might be the story about? What might happen in the movie? Now, this one, again, I write the same words, but I write the alphabets in a way that is in
harmony with the shapes. I add curves that are
like the form blobs. I write the princess
and this model. It's like kind of lography. Anyway, now think about it. If it was a movie, what might happen in the movie? What might be the adventures of that princess?
What might happen? Think about it and write it. This is very important. Now, let's talk about it more. What we experimented,
what we thought about in this class is about a field that is called
visual language. We think about the
psychological weight that shapes can have. A triangle can have referring to these meanings, strength,
energy, active. Have you noticed logos of sport brands have
triangles in them, sharp, focus,
directional, dynamic, dangerous, unpredictable,
and tension. Circle can have a referring
to this something cute, friendly, young,
unity, wholeness, safety, harmony, and continuity. Deformed blobs can have a
referring to comforting, dream like surreal, naturalness, transformation, authenticity,
growth, uniqueness. This doesn't mean that they
have all the meaning inside. No, we can use them to
refer to these feelings. Now your turn, tell me we can create what feelings
with rectangles. Take a break, drink
a cup of tea, and come to the next lesson. So we talk about your project. It's now your turn.
5. Your Project: Okay, now it's your turn. If I do the project and you watch that's not
a detective act. You must post your own project and enjoy the process yourself. For creating this project, you can do many ways. The importance of it is that
you write some sentences and analyze the feeling that you get from the visuals
that you have created. For creating the project, you can either recreate
what we did in this class, or simply can just cut
some shapes from paper and take a photo with a
mobile phone that you have and you're using
to watch this class. Or if you are watching
other classes like classes in trendy or
classes in digital art, you can create
this project using digital applications
and digital software. Even you can create
this project with AI. There's no restriction. I just want you to
create this experiment, create three sample project
using different shapes. Then express the feeling that
you get from each of them. Describe the feeling
that each of them is expressing silently. Pause your project and see
you in the next lesson.
6. Sum up & Your Task: Okay, congrats. Now you're here, and thanks for being
with me up to here. What we did in this past, we did some detective
experiment. We did some discoveries, we experimented with
different shapes. We make different designs, and then we think about what possible feelings
each of them might have. What we did is something in the wide field of
visual literacy. It has wide range of
application in architecture, in filmmaking, in poster design, in graphic design,
in interior design. The point is that what we discovered is just one of
the silent storytellers, and it's not very strict. We discovered that we use that, but don't regard it
as a strict rule. No, you should not
use this shape here. You should not use that
shape there, no, no, no. We just use that to
help our design, not at the strict rule, because rules in
