About This Class

Davinci resolve is one of the best editing software and In this series of videos I will show you how to begin your editing journey with it

Whether you are a total beginner in video editing or you come from another editing software, DaVinci Resolve can be hard to deal with at the very beginning.

I m Kriss I have edited videos since I m 15, I've used every software you can edit a video on, so I know how hard it can be when you start or start again on a new editing software. It’s been a few years now that I have moved my entire editing pipeline on Davinci resolve from editing, visual effect compositing, color grading, and sound design.

I've built this series of videos to be your quick guide to DaVinci resolve. Basically, the quick guide I wish I had when I first started editing videos. I've made it short and to the point, so you can use it first as a guide and then later as a reminder. I think this is the perfect way of doing this series

So let’s begin your journey

1. Introduction to davinci resolve: Demonstrate resolve is one of the best editing software and in this series of video will show you how to start your editing journey with it. Whether you're a total beginner or in video editing, or you come from another editing software. Laboratory results can be out to deal and they're very beginning. I'm Chris, I edit videos since I'm 15 and I've used basically every software that you can edit a video on. Sorry, No. Oh, art. It can be to start o to start again on a video editing software. It's been a few years since I moved my anti editing pipeline on DaVinci Resolve from editing video to visual effects compositing to color grading too. Of course, Sound Design. I've been this series of video to be a quick guide on DaVinci Resolve. Basically, the quick guide I wish I had when I first started my editing journey. I've made it short and to the pond so you can use it as a guide first and then later. As a reminder, I think this is the perfect way of doing this series of video. So let's begin your journey now. 2. Installation: And the first thing to do is to install the software. And this one is easy. Just go to the DaVinci Resolve 18 page. Just let go down a little bit and go to these parts and you have your freedom load now. You can also go to the DaVincis Support Center page and you get older version and just choose the one in ear and start it. 3. First start: When you run the software for the first time, it will ask you to add the first database. And when it's done, you get to this screen, the project manager. So mine is a little messy, but yours should be empty. You can add a folder with this button and add project with this one, new projects. So we got the folder. You can also right-click new folder. My first project creates, we go in here and go new projects. My first video, it will launch their venture is off. 4. Language: Before we begin, if you need, you can go preference user and change the language to the one you need in the ear. 5. Settings part 1: Every project must begin with a project setting. You need to be sure that everything in here is precisely what you need for your video. Timeline resolution is in air. So if you need a fork, a timeline and just choosing here. But I would advise you to choose a ten ADP. And then after you video is complete, before rendering, uj will change to four k. That way your computer will use less power to work on the edit. You can change the timeline frame rate in here, I will use 25. You can use a video monitoring system, but I will not change that for you. 6. Proxy: In this part, you can choose a proxy resolution. And a Proxy formats. Usually, can we deliver video file in a compressed format. It's easier to share and easier to play, but it's not an editing formats computer need to decode it before working with it. That's why your computer server, you can add a pin by making proxy proxies is less if your video file and usually in an editing formats. I mean, sure resolve F2 option to do it. Optimized media and proximity to be short, optimized media is the ancestor of proximity. So don't bother with the grumpy old man to generate proximity here, It's super simple. First, select the file format you want for the approximate area inside the city. Use the size you want, like ten AD or less. If you want. Then select your clip you want to make proxy and right-click and then make proximity. And Dido is some camera can directly generate proxy for you. You can link them inside DaVinci Resolve by selecting the clip. Right-click unlink proximity when you need to see the original file, just uncheck the Use of proximity to keep your computer clean. Lta suggest you to let all the proxy you don't work on anymore. Simply go to the proxy folder and erase them with any condition. 7. Settings part 2: Working folder part is where resolve will add the proxy negation to Gary. You can then, if you want to keep that preset, save, go to presets and save a presets. In here. You can also choose which preset resolve F to load at the beginning. 8. Importing files: Let's import some file now, go to the media page. And don't worry, we will see each page later. But first, begin by importing some footage. Resolve is like a toolbox. You have multiple way of doing things. Begin by importing some file. You can just only go to the file you will need. And I'm putting that in here. Result will ask you if you want to change the frame rates, you click so don't change. My file is imported year. You can also go in the literal explorer in IR. Go there, my first video file image and drag it here. And my preferred way is just go there. Go here, select all the footage, drag it, and drop it in. Here on the left. Parts. Don't change. And as you see, it made everything in the folder. So I can keep everything organized, not as my own projects. On this page, you don't really need to know more than debts. We just go to the edit page. 9. Edit page creating a timeline: And why not the good page to page and edit pages nearly the same. I advise you when you begin to start with the edit page. On the page, we begin by going on the muscle and create a timeline. If you leave used Project Settings, Check it will use the project setting we've made. So that's perfectly what I want. 10. Edit page user interface: On the left of the page, you have some tab in year, major, pool effect, editor and x and soon library on the right track, mixer, metadata and Inspector. Let's begin by the media pool living there probably is a little border of the media page. Scenario. You have all the footage. Effect is where you find all the effects for your video or just transition. Everything you need is in here AT to index. You don't have to bother with it. As a beginner, sound library is where you have all the sound effect, but we will talk more about that when you are on the homepage, you have the mixer to check your volume metadata to get every metadata of your file. And you have your inspector. When you can change some settings of the file, you have too little button in ear and inner ear. We'll do basically the same. It expand or retract. The menu, gets less or more room. 11. Metadata: Let's slow down a minute and talk about metadata. Metadata is simply data embedded into your footage. You can of course, added some metadata. The editing process to best viewed panel. I will expand it, but I can of course, go back to the media page to get depended on the rights and my footage on the left. Why metadata is important? If you have only few files, like ten or 20, maybe you don't need the metadata and then you can go to your editing process. We saw that. But if you have a lot of footage and also from different source, metadata can help you source your files and make your editing process smoother. On the panel, you can choose what metadata you want to review, or you can click on all groups to have everything displayed. You can type some description commands, some keywords, or some people. If you have some actor shoes, the clip color, you can also choose the right ear with the flags. You can tell the software which shot is it, which scene, which take, which angle, and so on. These parts is already baked in the file. It's not so much just the start time code, the n timecode, frame and number of frame, and the date modified. As you see, everything else is empty. 12. Smart bins: Smart beans are some bins, some files where your footage is sought by the computer. Imagine, I need all the file from a one camera. I know that they've tree camera, GoPro, this is A7, S3, and this is DJI. Of course, it's always resorts. But imagine you have an S7, S3, and a canon Poison. Smuggling. A7 is three. You choose. What you want. You can make some sorting by name, because as you see, A7, S3 begin by C, Go Pro with an amber and DJ by DJI. So I can of course go in here, select the property filename, contain. See. You see that every file with a C is displayed. Even some sound file I can make it plus clip type is video and audio. Why not only video? Because I know that my S of n is three gets ODU. So I can go there. I can create an every Eclipse for my S7, S3 is there. I can add smart bin for my DJI. Major pool filename contain DJI. I don't need to make another poverty. If I need to modify some property, I can double-click on the spot beans and everything pop up. As you see. I need the clips to match all the following rules. It's a video, audio, and in need to contain the C. If I want to make rules or I can just take any option. Let's complicate things. I've added another folder with another Sony camera, the A65 and roots. And as you see the filename begin the same as the A7 is my S7, S3 smart bin is not working anymore. To change that, I can go in my folder. So that's the best way of organizing. But maybe I don't have any choice. Maybe I receive every file in one folder. But here my video is, my ethylene is three. I can select it. Everything. I can go there and camera number or camera type. And we're ID camera format, whatever you need, whatever you want. I'll make the camera type a seven S3. Save. And now every clip with the A7 S3 get the data. Camera type is known as tree. I can then go to my other folder. Camera type eight, sixty-five hundred that's me. Now, I can put my video folder and my exam folder. I will do it just for the sake. So I have no one big folder with all my video. My S7, S3 folder is not working anymore, so I will change the rules. Change in ear, metadata, camera, camera at life, 7M tree. I can then add a smart been 6500. Camera type contain 6500. And now I've just separates my asynchronous tweet, my a 6500. If the smart Bins option is not available, you just have to go to the View, Show smart beans. 13. Insert clips: Let's begin by importing some footage in here. And this one in here. As you can see, it's really easy. You just have to take it and rub it. But that's where we have select everything fall footage. If I need to be more precise, I can double-click. And as you see, the mentor is changing now. It will display what we have in here and not the timeline. We can find the points selected, find the ODE bonds selected. You can also press I and O to select the in and out. Then you can just drag the file in here. If you have some that are evil, you have the two option in here. You can drag it, the file for everything. You can drag just the video by selecting the video in the ear and just the songs by selecting the sound in the ear. 14. Monitor control: Around the mentor, you have the zoom option in here. You can just mouse click middle, mouse click, Drag it fits. You can also use the mouse wheel to zoom. You ever saw series of controlling ear. The first one is the transform tool. It's basically the same as that we will see later. You can choose which one you want in here, you have a joke. We'll that's for moving slowly on the timeline. You are busy playing control, like play, stop and reverse. You ever saw your in and out in here, if you want to make something that's to remove the inner node, you just press out and in and out to deactivate the option. Just click it. And you will see later that we will use operon FX Overlay. You can also deactivate it in here. 15. Timeline control part 1: We will now talk about this series of buttons. The first one is the selection mode. Then we have the trim. Selection mode is like its name, telling just for selecting, fitting. By just going to the end or the beginning of a clip. Select my flip. The tree mode, act a little bit differently. You need to know that's where you are on tree mode when you moved the end of the clip, it will also move the rest of the timeline. And you also can basically move like that. I would advise to use only this 1 first. And when you are comfortable, you can switch to this one. The dynamic tree mode is for the user where the joke Bill. You also have the blade. Who gets to keep if you are, if you need to reverse something you just done, Control and Z, the tree next button. The first one is to insert the clip o. To do that, just going in, air, select. And we've put an in and out. And then I will press insert the clip. Look where it will insert it just in my pled with the in and out that it doesn't modify the rest of the clip. You just jets and separate. That's exactly the same as I will do in here. I will cut it, open it, drop it, and close it. That's exactly the same. It will just done by only one button. The second one, we'll see where the playhead is. N. It will do the same, but we are moving to clip. It will basically just take a clip, cutting it. Take another clip, put it where the cut is, that the last part is not moving, is replaced. The last button in here, it will basically take your clip immediate bool, and replace just in here on the timeline. The next tree button. The first one is to snapping. As you see, as I move my play head, it will snap on edge. I can deactivate it and now it won't snap anymore. The second one is to unlink the video and audio file together, meaning I can move now. Those separately if you need it. You can also select by pressing Alt and click. You can move now separately. You can also right-click and Jake link clips. And as you see, the little icon of the link is gone. No, I can select separately the log here. It just to lock everything so you can change anything. 16. Flags and markers: Then we have the flagging. Flagging is for flagging a file. And I mean what I said, I mean, flagging file. Like you see here, I can flagging every thing that is related to this file, this one. And you see here the flag is skinnier two, meaning that if I go there, I will flag it red. And everything is now flagging, read like this. Flag is wet. You can also go there. Flagging purple. And every part of this video on the timeline is flagging purple. You have marker. Marker can be on the timeline. If nothing is selected. If you select something, it will add on this. If you select a clip n, the tip is linked with the audio. It will add the marker on those. You can, of course, change of kilometer marker. And if you double-click, you can add some nodes and M name of the mockers and notes. And you see the mercury is available on your monitor each time you are. 17. Timeline zoom: This tree button is for managing timeline. A Zoom. When I press this, it will zoom to get everything in, in the timeline. So for example, is phi double dot. And then press on the Zoom. You will get everything displayed. If I press this one, detail zoom, it will make a close Zoom on where my play head is. To see really, really closely what is going on. And if you choose Custom Zoom, the Zoom. You have a register. With the mouse wheel. You can use it mostly for Zoom. You can press the middle button. Dragging right and left. Shifts. You will change the scale of the track. We can change the scale of an audio track two. And if you go there, you have a little bit more control in here is for adding tabs for timeline. If, for example, I had another timeline in here, you see it will go adding the timeline here and I can change what they want, wanted here. I will have some motion, will show you that in here. I can select this if I want to display only the first and the last frame on the track. This, if I only wants the colo displayed, this one is for displayed every little frame possible. Or your view. If I want to change the view of my audio in here, I can also disability in here if I don't eat, but I advise you to keep it. And in IR is for changing the video and audio track. Lastly, I didn't talk about this, but this is a zoom option. 18. Shortcuts: You will see that there is a lot of shortcuts to begin. I will not advise you to know every little shortcuts because there is some that you will not use at all. So just try to do something with the mouse first. And when you begin to replicate that task again and again, then learn the shortcuts to see and to change the shortcut, you can go to keyboard customization in here and change your shortcuts just right here. 19. Playing videos: When you press Play, you will see that there is a little anecdote. Arrian ear was said 25 with a green dots. It means that the computer doesn't struggle with reading the frame. If you get a red dots with another number and 25 like 1213, that's mean your computer is struggling. You can make proxy and you can also go in here, payback, timeline proxy resolution and changing to alpha or quieter. 20. Making the edit: Let's begin by making some editing. I will choose my first clip. I can remove the flag or ours. I don't need it. You understand the concepts? So let's begin by first showing a clip that out. I'll take my clip. I then choose my keeping here. I want everything so I will drag it. I just press Alt to get rid of the audio part. This one too. One is for later. And this one. So my editing is done. I can of course, make more track. You'll see that there is only one tracking. I can make. Another trick. I can drag something in here. Make a subscribe animation. You also can drag something just in here. On the third one. Even if you don't have third one, it will automatically create one. And E automatically create a new audio track. Two. 21. Inspector: I will then go there and change some settings in here. I can go make a zoom if I need. Everything is animatable. Just right ear with the point in here, can go there and make an zoomed out. There is also an option to do that with the Dynamic Zoom. It will automatically create a keyframe. We don't need to adjust it. If I need, I can crop. Some reason. If I need to reset the value, I can go on here. Press reset for everything or just on the setting. By this, I can also double-click on the name to reset it. You can edit thing to do aspect or all directly via the transform tool. Here, the crop tool, or the Dynamic Zoom and so on. You have all the control in here, but also in this pictorial, let's add just a little bit more. This way. 22. Transitions: Let's add now a transition in. Here. I go to Effect panel. I can choose video transition in here. And the first part is basic transition. And when I get to fusion transition, this kind of transition can be modified inside a Fusion page. So basic one is here. And I have some other settings in the transition tab. But he has picked door. So I can medications. I'm seeing a transition to one kilometer. That stuff will again change. Fusion transition. And if needed, if you know what you do, you can go to fission in here and make some adjustment in year. One mistake I see really often is when you try to apply a transition to clips where there are no frame left. I explained myself in each clip there is an in and out points. If the input current is the first frame and last frame, there is no frame left to move. So you can't play more of the clip when you try to apply a transition between two clips where there is no frame left, the Thomson won't apply. That's because the transition to work need some frame before and after. To make it work. I can click on the cards. You see that my mouse is challenging the banning of what I own and I can click in the middle. We change the kids. 23. Titles: Let's make some basic title. Let's go there. And as you see, you have a lot of presets of title of lower third. And you can also download them on some sites. But let's begin by adding this one. And this one, because this is not the same. Texts, is a basic, basic, basic title. The reason I'm controlling year, but you can't go inside fusion, modify it because taxpayers have basic adjustments here. But you can go to vision. To make some more adjustment. Can go, they're changing some brightness. You can take ear to make some blur and so on. So remember, texts is a basic one, takes Bruce is the beginning of fusion texts. If you want. You can also choose the one in air. And if you like it, you can press the star in here. And it will keep a list in here that you can quickly access. So I don't need to get to the effect panel grid. I can access directly in here. I can access the textbox, the edge wipe transition, and so on. All the effects can be Preview just by overriding the mouse on it. You don't need to drag it onto the timeline. You can preview it just by hovering. And that will work also on the transition and the effects. Let's add some other things in here. We add this one. 24. Green screens and black screens: I already add subscribe and emission in the ear, but the background is black. And sometimes you can download it with the background green. Of course, I will link in the description some websites where you can find free animation like this. I want to get rid of the green background. I go to Effects. I then go Open Effects. I just click it because I want to search in it. And I typed key. I use a 3D Kia. I go to effects and I want to click it. But remember, I said that we need to activate the open effects of early before. I didn't click it and click there. There is a little green edge of the button. I will go to this pill and drag it until the edges removed. And I have no, my effects. If the border is black, you can try the effect. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. And when it doesn't, just go to video. And because it's black, go to composites and go to screen. Twill. Then As you see, let your animation play because it's black and the screen remove the black. 25. Powerbins: If there is some footage you want to keep to add it to another project or maybe to all of your video, like the subscribe button, you go to bourbons. If you don't have it. There, you go to View Show province. Orleans is like a beans that you can access in every project so you don't have to re-import it. Just go there and check it. 26. Fusion page: There is a lot to tell about the official page. Basically, I can do untie course average, and that's exactly what I've done. So I will give you a link to access it. 27. Color page first step: I will go then on the color page. And in the color page, you can make some adjustment or your color. The color page is working like fusion with node. And don't worry, I know that node system like fusion or the color page is super scary. But when you understand the way of using it, you don't have basically any limitation. 28. Color page using lut: But I know that some of you want to know the basis, like adding Alerts. Alerts, it's really easy. Just make a new node that we Alt and S. Go to the folder in here. You have all the available from dementia zone. You can add your own notes by going to File project Settings management. And you can open a lot folder in the ear. Just make a new folder. And when it's finished, just update the list. So you can navigate. In the, let this go, look about one led to see what is the load is doing. You can just go over the thumbnails with your mouse. And to add it, just dragging and plug it to the last one. Y, plug it to the last one. This is because I want one before to make some adjustment if I want. So with this node, I can act on all the data available. Because after all the red, some that I will be removed. If you need to decrease the intensity of just select the node where the load is, go under Kitab Q output and decreased again. That way it will decrease the intensity. If you need to deactivate a node, you can press on the number o, go here, and then to bypass everything. 29. Color page basic color correction: But let's say for building your purpose, I want to make some changes here. I first need to curl correct its meaning. I want the clock to be accurate. And then if I want, I can color grading. First. Make some tree node, right tree node because I love to have separate correction on each one. The first one is correcting the color. You. The second one is correcting the saturation. And the third one is correcting the luminosity. If you need to remember that, of course, you can first save this video for later. But there is a little reminder on the query for tab. You saturation and luminance. So in first, I'll check the color bands. Of course this image is good so I don't need it. But if I need, I can change and correct the color. I then go to saturation if I need less saturated image. And I go then on year to make maybe more correction and contrast. And just a man in here, if I need, of course, this image is already corrected. So I don't really need it for a beginner. I would recommend to stay on a uneasy level of color coating. And then with more experience, you can go further. 30. Fairlight first step: Let's now go to the audio page. In your module page, you also have a bunch of tab like you see. Come on. Team. Also tabs everywhere. So the first type is the media pool, where you can check your songs and add it. Just like that. Ufd effects. You can add audio effects in the ear. You need some reverb. Awesome scenarios. 31. Sfx library: You have your sound library. And if you begin, you can install the sound library of resolve. I will show you. You can go to the shipper page as Lean before mega console and look for sound, black magic flight zone library. And you can just install it. When you install it, you will go in here and you have your son Library. You can look for some wind. Can go there and add sound. I can preview in here. Drag and drop. I can use this as a jog wheel. I can print I and O to make in and out. That's exactly the same as before. And then drop it in here as soon as the drug, it will create a new track. The bus is the main sound in here. You can try to put something in it, but as you see, every time you do it, it will create a new track. If you need to add another library. You can go to local database and add library in here. It will ask where you need to search. 32. Fairlight basic controls: You are basically a lot more control in ear, which control the songs. Use the same as before as the page. So you can use the timeline like this. That's because my timeline is on fixed playhead. I like it more that way. You can make like this. And as you play, your play head is moving. I prefer to have my timeline visit fixed play head. That way I can drag it like this. As a job. For the beginning, you don't need to understand every other control, just stick with it. You can, of course, make some adjustment like this. Make some end of clips we've deleted under. So it will fade out. If you need to make some adjustment knob on the odor of the clips, you can press out to create points. And then you can adjust on a point basis. That's a great technique to remove some sounds you don't want. On the right, you have your own spectral where you can change the volume of a cliff, the pen, to lefts and rights, the pitch, the speed change, and of course an equalizer to make some change. You also have some setting in here. You have an audio control. To control ODU one track in here. You can make some adjustment in ear and inner ear. You have a meter to play and to let you know which volume is on, use the color to remain where you volume should be. Green is for ambient sound music. And some soft speaking, yellow is for average sound like conversation or voice-over or any normal sound. And red is for big sounds. But be careful because in the red bar, the higher you go, the closer to distortion you are. If you don't want to have some sort of distortion on your zones, keep in mind to lower the value. 33. Voice over: If you need to do some sort of voiceover, just select the track you want. I will go on the audio too, can delete this one. Here we go, two inputs. Input. Take my NIJ. Budget. Voiceover, need to get a mono track. So change the trach tube model. And then let's make some room. And only the Inspector, I can then press rag and then unmute it. That way you won't listen to your voice because that's weird. And then you get press wreck. And that's where you can register your voice in here. 34. Rendering: When your video is finished, you go to the deliberate page and you will choose o. You want to wonder it. If this is for YouTube, you have a YouTube preset right here. Youtube ten ADP. Just leave it there. Put a name, a location. As you see, you can keep it that way. The random part is the answer timeline. If you need to just wonder about, you can move the in and outs and select in and out French. Then you go to Add to Render Queue. And you click to wonder if you need more control over your render, you can go there. And you have, as you see, more control, you can change the name, the location, the formats, the codec encoder. If you ever NVIDIA graphics cards, I advise you to put Nvidia in here. It will be much, much, much faster. Put the resolution in air. And as we spoke before, if you are making a fork a video, you can now go in air on timeline. Changes sitting two for k and then when the rates on for k. So that's mean you have made all the work on the ten ADP and then resolve with automatically re-scale it to for K. You can check the quality ADR automatic as a dropdown menu, leave it to best or restrict to. If you understand, what is it, then you can move it either way. I advise you to stick to automatic and then you get the Render.
