1. PREVIEW - The cutest Octopus: A handmade gift is always appreciated. It puts a smile on everyone's face. Almost everyone. Hi, I am Emilie Bolduc a crochet designer from Montreal who is behind Crochetmilie's brand I have an Etsy shop full of fun and modern patterns to crochet. Maybe you met me in the first class. I posted on this platform the how to crochet course, a complete program to learn all the basic crochet techniques with nine quick projects included. In this class, we're going to make this cute little octopus that can be used as a key chain or just to be looked at. You will learn how to crochet in rounds using single crochet, how to make invisible decreases and how to make half double crochet. As a bonus, you will have the option of adding a graduation hat to transform your octopus into the perfect gift for your little graduates. Are you ready? Let's start crocheting! 2. INTRODUCTION - Materials & Stitches: We will crochet this cute octopus keychain You will need a little bit of worsted weight or sport weight yarn in black for the little hat. And you can choose any other color for the octopus. You will need too a super fine yellow yarn a 3.5 millimeter hook, scissors a yarn needle a stitch marker, polyester stuffing, and 2 5 millimeter diameter metal studs and a keychain. If you can't find the little metal stud, you can take safety eyes or you can simply embroidered the eye on the octopus with your black yarn. And if you don't have super fine yellow yarn, you can take a worsted weight yarn and separate the thread to get the same result. And if you want to have the exact material I used, you can buy this crochet kit. Ion my Etsy shop at crochetmilie or on my website crochetmilie.com. You will find the links to buy that in the course description below. Let's now see which stitches that will be used in that pattern. We will do chains, single crochet, half, double crochet, single crochet, two together a diminution (decrease) and slip stitch. If you're unfamiliar with these terms, I will explain them in this tutorial. But if you need more help, you can look into my complete crochet course to learn the basics. I also put this link under this video. Iet's now start to crochet this little octopus. See you in next video. 3. THE OCTOPUS - Rnd 1 to 11: First of all, we're gonna start with a slipknot. It's like making a knot, but never finishing it. You hold the two threads. and you tight it. You put your hook inside the loop and close the knot on it, not too tight. And with your other hand, you will turn the yarn around your little finger and over your index and with your middle finger and your thumb, you will hold the knot. I will repeat it again. Around your little finger above your index. And you hold your knot. And always leave your index up in the air. First move, yarn over in front of you. Take the yarn and pass it through the loop. You can do another one, yarn over, pass into the loop. You just did 2 chains. So round one, you will do 6 single crochet in the second chain from your hook. So you enter your hook into the chain, yarn over, pass through the chain. Yarn over, pull through two loops on your hook. That's a single crochet. In the same hole in the same chain. you will do another single crochet. You will do four more single crochet in that chain. It will form a little ring At the end you can count. If you really have six single crochet made. And you can pull on the beginning thread just to close the little ring. Round 2, we will do a single crochet in the first single crochet you made. This one, by taking both loops. All the little v. You make a single crochet into this stitch You can place your stitch marker on that stitch. Thanks to it, you will know where to start your rounds You can do another single crochet in the same stitch We're going to increase in every stitches. We're gonna do two single crochet in all next stitches. 2 Single crochet in next stitch. Continue making two single crochet in each of next stitches for a total of 12 stitches in this round. The last stitch will be the one just before your stitch marker. That's it for round two. You have 12 single crochet made. Round 3 You can remove your stitch marker, make one single crochet into this stitch. Placed your stitch marker back on it. You can do another single crochet in the same stitch. We're gonna increase every other stitch. Next one, only one single crochet. In Next, two single crochet. One single crochet in the next one. And Repeat this pattern all around for a total of 18 stitches. Round 4, you can remove your stitch marker and make a single crochet in the next stitch, this one. Place your stitch marker back. In This round, We're going to increase every two stitches. You can do another single crochet in this same stitch. We increase, will do a single crochet in next two stitches. 2 Single crochet in next stitch. 1 Single crochet in next two stitches. And you repeat that pattern all around for a total of 24 stitches. Round 5, we're gonna stop increasing and we're gonna do single crochet in every next stitches. You remove your stitch marker. Make a single crochet. In this stitch. Put your Stitch marker back. You will continue doing a single crochet in every next stitches. For a total of 24 stitches in this round you can see that it forms a little bowl. So you can just flip it. to Work from the outside of your project. And this is round one, round 2 round three, round 4, round five. You will continue doing round 6 to 9, the same way, one single crochet in next 24 stitches. See you at the end of Rnd 9! Let's count together the number of rounds we have. This is the number 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. round 10, We're going to start to decrease. And we're going to do a single crochet two together, the invisible way by taking front loop of next two stitches. And you do a normal single crochet. Two stitches became one stitch. You can put your stitch marker back on that one. You will do a single crochet In next stitch. We're going to decrease again by taking front loop of next two stitches and doing a single crochet into them. Single crochet In the next stitch. You decrease by taking two next stitches. Single crochet in the next stitch. And you continue this pattern all around. For a total of 16 stitches in this round at the end of round 10, you can stuff your little octopus with polyester fiber. So you remove your hook from the loop and you put this stuff inside. If you don't have that at home, you can take any yarn trash and put them inside. the little octopus. if you plan to use safety eyes, you can put them now on round 7 Round 11, we're going to decrease all around. You're gonna do single crochet two together, the invisible way all around. Remove your stitch marker. You can pull on the polyester, fill to keep it inside, to not take it with your hook. You will go into front loop of next two stitches. You do a single crochet into them. You put your stitch marker back on that stitch. You repeat the decrease all around. You will have a total of 8 stitches At the end of this round. 4. THE OCTOPUS - Rnd 12 to 13: Round 12, It's where we're going to do the little tentacles. you're going to remove your stitch marker. And try to put it back on the backloop of next stitch. You're going to do a slip stitch into the front loop only of next stitch. For doing a slip stitch, you will enter your hook into this loop, the front loop, we'll yarn over and pass through both loops on your hook. You will Ch10 And you're gonna do a half double crochet in third chain from your hook. To do a half double crochet, you yarn over before entering in the chain Yarn over, pass through the chain. Yarn over, pull through three loops on your hook. And you will do half double crochet in every next chains. You just made 8 half double crochet So we're going to slip stitch into the same front loop of round 11, just to close the little tentacle. And we're going to repeat the same thing. Slip stitch in front loop of next stitch of round 11, chain 10 And you are going do half double crochet in third chain from your hook. And a half double crochet in every next seven chains. You're gonna do a slip stitch in the same front loop of round 11. You can continue this pattern to make eight tentacles. At the end. You can slip stitch between the first and the last tentacle. You can count if your little octopus have the right amount of tentacles. If you remember, we left a little loop on round 11. So we're gonna crochet on it now for round 13. So you can single crochet where your stitch marker is You can remove it and put it back on your stitch. You can continue doing single crochet in next seven backloop of round 11. It's a little bit hard to see. But as long as you do your single crochet into those little loops, Everything's gonna be okay. It will be hidden. And you're going to join with slip stitch into your first single crochet made in this round. And that's it. You can remove your hook from the loop, pull on it. Remove your stitch marker. You can cut the end of the yarn, leaving a good length and pull that thread into the loop to close and secure your project. And with your yarn needle. you're going to pass the thread into the hole. And you're going to pass it in every front loop of next eight stitches. So we're going sew the end to have a great finish. And you can pull on the ending thread to close your little octopus pass your yarn needle inside it and pull it through the outside of the octopus. We will now attach the keychain on top of it. Bring your yarn needle on top of the octopus. And you can sew the key chain with this thread. You can pass into the little key chain ring 2 times to secure it well. And we can weave this thread inside the little octopus by going from left to right between stitches. Just to secure the end. You can cut the thread. We will now put the little eyes. If you have that little metal studs, you see that there's 4 spikes. So we're going to fold them around a stitch. We're going to place them on round 7..1234567 here. To help you, You can use your yarn needle to help you fold the little spikes around the stitch like this. If you don't have these little studs, you can use your black yarn and embroider the eyes you want Always check if these little studs are really solid. you can put the second one about three stitches apart. Congrats, Your little octopus is all done. In the next video. We're gonna do it's little graduation hat 5. BONUS: THE GRADUATION HAT: We will now do the little graduation hat. You can take the black yarn, make a slipknot, Put your hook inside the loop, Tight it, You will do Chain 2. round one. You will make five single crochet in second chain from your hook. You can count and tight the ring Round 2, We're Gonna do a single crochet in the first single crochet you made in round one. By taking both loops. You can now put your stitch marker on this single crochet. And you will do another single crochet in this same stitch. We're gonna increase all around. 2 Single crochet in next stitch. Continue making 2 single crochet in every next stitches. You can count your stitches to be sure that you have 10 single crochet made in this round. We will now do a slip stitch. AIn next stitch. you can remove your stitch marker. To make a slip stitch you enter in it, yarn over, pull through two loops on your hook. You can now chain one and turn your project. We're going to work from the inside of it. We're going to do a single crochet in back loop only of next stitch. You can replace your stitch marker back on it. You're gonna continue making a single crochet in back loop Only of every next stitches, you should have 10 single crochet made in this round in total. At the end, you're Gonna slip stitch in the first single crochet. Of this round. round 4, you can remove your stitch marker, chain one, you can make a single crochet in same stitch by taking both loops this time. You can replace your stitch marker back on it. Continue making a single crochet in next nine stitches for a total of 10, single crochet made in this round. At the end, you can remove the stitch marker and do a slip stitch in The first single crochet made in this round This is the bottom of that little hat. You can cut the yarn by leaving a good length. Secure your project. By making a knot we will now do the top of the hat. With the same black yarn. You can make a slipknot. Again. Put your hook inside the loop. You will chain 2 this time you will do six single crochet in the second chain from your hook. You can count your single crochet made and tight the little ring. Round two. You're going to do a single crochet in the first single crochet made in round one. Going to place your stitch marker on it. you are going to make another single crochet in this same stitch. Again, we're going to increase in each stitches. So 2 single crochet in next stitch. And continue making 2 single crochet in every next stitches for a total of 12 stitches in this round. At the end you can count if you really have 12 single crochet made. Round three, you can remove your stitch marker. You're going to do a single crochet in this stitch. Place your stitch marker back on it. You're Going to do another single crochet in this same stitch, chain one, and make 2 single crochet in the same stitch again. You're going to do a single crochet in Next two stitches. Next stitch, 2 single crochet. Chain one, 2 single crochet in same Again. It will make the little hat square. Make a single crochet in next two stitches. We are Going to repeat the same pattern. 2 Single crochet in the next stitch. Chain, one, 2 single crochet in same stitch. followed by one single crochet in next two stitches. You can repeat this pattern one more time. At the end you can remove the stitch marker and make a slip stitch in the first single crochet made in this round. tThe little top of the hat is done! you can remove the hook from the loop, cut the yarn, leaving a good lenght and secure your thread. 6. BONUS: THE GRADUATION HAT - Assembly: You can take the first part, you made, the bottom of the hat. And with your yarn needle, put the beginning thread inside of it. You can now take the top of the hat. And with the ending thread, you're going to sew it On the bottom. You can bring the thread near of the center of the hat by doing like this. And now you can take the bottom and place it in the middle of the top of the hat. You can sew both of them together by going between stitches of the middle of the hat. Once you're done, you can enter this thread inside the hat. Keeping the ending thread of the bottom of the hat alone. You can put the three other threads inside your yarn needle. And we're going to fix this little hat, on your octopus You can enter your yarn needle between round 2 and 3 And with the thread we left alone. We're going to sew the hat on the octopus with it. You can start sewing it by entering between round 1 and 2. And that's it. You can bring the thread with the other one. You can cut these threads, just a little bit and make a double knot with them like this. And you can re-enter them inside the octopus to hide them. Cut the overage. We will now do the little tassel. With your super fine yellow yarn. Cut 3 threads of about 7-8 inches long. You can make several knots at one of the end. It's important to have a big knot to make a resistance to keep the tassel inside. So you can put the other end into your yarn needle, pass it through the octopus go out through the middle of the hat. So this is where you're going to check if you're knot is big enough. And now you can begin to braid. the 3 threads together. About an inch long. It's a little bit hard with the camera in front of me. So I think you are able to braid it. So we're going to jump this part. Okay, Now you've braided these three threads about an inch, you're going to make a knot at the end to secure it and cut the end, Cut the beginning thread too. And that's it. You finally made your graduation octopus key chain. 7. FINAL WORDS: Hello again.
