1. Introduction: Do you want to learn how to design a cartoon creatures that are unique and memorable like Pokemon. In this class, you'll be introduced to the fun world of creature design by taking two existing characters and mashing them up to make a new character. In this series of lessons, you'll learn to draw an animal type bodies, combined character features and decorate your creature with color and line art. By the end of this class, you'll know the mashup technique for designing unique characters. You're welcome to follow along with me step-by-step. If you are a beginner. Otherwise, feel free to choose your own Pokemon or character inspiration. I'll be drawing digitally, but you can work in the medium of your choice. I'd love to see what you create at the end. So please share your artwork on our community. Have fun in class. 2. Drawing the Body: We're going to be drawing some Pokemon today. I'll be focusing on mainly like simple shapes, like when we draw the human body, what kind of simple shapes and 3D shapes do we want to use? And of course, they can all be different because there are so many kinds of Pokemon, but it's a good starting point. And at this point, if you guys like Pokemon, play Pokemon or no, any Pokemon, I want you to start thinking about try and get an idea in your head of what you want to do. Because of course you can always do what I wanna do, but it's always better if you do what you want to do, right? So, yeah, just for some examples, my sylvian mashup here, Jovian and Princess Peach. So that's if you guys want to mash up like a human character, I'm totally fine with that. And I have another one of generals from One Punch Man and luxury. His hair looks kinda silly now that I look at it. But yeah, so those are a couple of human examples. I did another one. This one is of luxury. And then grim snarled the new, new Pokemon. Because I like both of them very much. So as you can see, there's like, I tend to prefer the Pokemon that look more like animals, like four-legged animals. But there are so many kinds. There are some that look more like human, some that are just a ball, aka jiggly puff. So I want you to think about, well, what do you wanna do? It doesn't have to be exactly Pokemon and poke them on. Like I said, it can be just a mash up, but I want you guys to use Pokemon as the base, like where to start with. So what I might do is start with an EV. Because if you're ever a little stuck with Pokemon, because there's so many of them like over 800, I think. So as you guys may or may not know, Evie has a lot of EV, illusions of how it can evolve until a bunch of different types. So you could either, if you want to start with EV, EV is pretty, pretty slick. You can create a new type for it, or you can take another Pokemon and mash it up with EVs. That is what I'm gonna do. Because i2, I'm overwhelmed by 800 plus book. Let's just draw an EV first. It's a good starting point. So what I would do when I'm looking at the picture, I want to start with basic shapes as usual. So I'm going to start with some construction thinking of my shapes. So maybe I think what I'm gonna do because I just remember that I really like Gumi. I might I'm gonna do a mash-up of EV and Gumi. So what would evolving into Gumi or Boudreau look like? So what I'm gonna do is start with a simple four-legged animal construction, but I'm gonna be tweaking it. So IBI looks more like grownup, Right? Just like the evolutions. So I'm starting with a circle similar to a human head. I can add a muzzle. Because when I look at the evolutions, the muzzle is a little bit longer than on EV cars. It's very cute. For the body. What we want to do is draw, like draw two circles. Again, we're focusing on some construction lines. And I'll leave the second part up to you. If you put a circle up here, this is more for a standing pose, but if you put the circle down here, they're gonna be sitting. So I'm thinking, since I'm mashing up my EV with Gumi for Gu Dre. I'm trying to picture in my head what a standing pose work better or a sitting pose? I'm gonna go with a standing pose because Gumi is very gooey, very drapey. And I want to show that like goopy jelly effect. So I have this, these two circles. I have the head, the torso, and the hips, the pelvis. So what I wanna do next is kinda connect the outline of these circles. So now I have a neck. And then when I connect these two circles, I get a body. Very slowly. Don't forget the other side of the neck. So once I have my circles connected, I can erase these guidelines. I'm going to use more guidelines as well for the legs. So I could have the arm stick out here. And you just want to think about, remember these cone shapes. It's the same thing like when we were drawing the human body. You want to think about these 3D shapes or like the shapes. If you want to think really, really simply think about this 2D really long trapezoid or a rectangle. I can sketch one here. And another one for the second leg. Now there's a little bit of perspective involved when you're drawing an animal or a creature, four-legged creature in this pose. Let me give that another shot. The arms looked a little off. The ligand, the front will be a little bit longer. So I'm just going to fix this up here. Then here I can erase some of the guidelines. I'm okay with that. So at this stage, all we're really looking for is like a starting base, starting pose. And then we can add all the details on top. It's just like when we're drawing a human body. We want to construct it first and then add a phase, add hair at details, et cetera. So I have the two front arms and notice that I didn't draw any feet yet. I'm going to draw all the feet together. I'm going to draw the hind legs and next. So hind legs on animals like dogs and cats, their legs are a little different or very different from humans. You can use a really big circle to represent their thigh. And then that rectangle shape here is a little bit on a diagonal. Because the way the, the bones in them are laid out a little differently. They're like going here and here. I find that I drew this leg a little too inward, so I'm going to make it stick out some more. Get a little bit straighter. Then again, don't worry. If you're not sure about the overall shape, you can always change it. I'm going to draw the other leg. The other leg, you want to imagine the same shape, the same circle, rectangle. The only thing is that try drawing through, drawing through the body. Also one thing, remember what I said? Just to notice that the feet on the far side, they look a little shorter because of perspective being put in play. That's how we can tell that the feet on this side are a little bit further. They're not as close to us. Okay? So for pause, you just want to think about like this shape. It's like a baby shoe that I think about it. So you're, if you're the type of artist who really likes drawing human characters and only human characters. Drawing something like an animal might be difficult. So if this is your first time ever, don't be discouraged. If you're having some trouble. It just takes practice. The feet walk and I can always change it in my outlining stage. As usual. Excuse me. So this is an okay. Starting point for me. 3. Creating the Hybrid Design: Yeah, so this is what we have as a base so far from here, I want to think about the traits that Evie has, as well as the second Pokemon I'm going to use. So I have FE here and we want to look at distinguishing features. Like Evie has a really fluffy color. He has really pointy ears. So those are, those are distinguishing traits. So the distinguishing features that I see in Gumi is the cheeks, the green cheeks, the whole purple color. So when I'm coloring my mashup, I might want to use gummies color palette. So it's the shape of an EV, evolution at least. But the color of Gumi and some other characteristics like these antennas. Let's start with the face. So when we're drawing a face, we can find the center line of the head first, just like when we're drawing a human character. So you can go about drawing eyes in 23 different ways. So one is using the eyes of one of the first Pokemon that you're mashing it up with, or the second one or three, you can come up with your own style, right? So I'm just going to start with the guidelines. So gummies eyes are actually two simple because they're just dots and I don't really want that. So I might go for something like Woodruff ice. There are more circular and I might put my own spin on it as well. So once I have my guidelines, I can start by trying a simple shape. I like to define that upper eyelid because I find without it, it's just a circle. This is a three-quarter view on the head. So i means the I on the other side will be a little smaller or a little cut-off. I'm gonna keep adjusting the shape of the eyes until I'm happy. I want to make sure that they're fairly even. If the overall height is the same. I find that router has a really wide eyed look for a lot of whites of the eye showing. I want to move that knows a little bit higher. So if you ever want to make like a cute looking character, one way to easily make your character Cute is kind of squishing their features together. So like the eyes and the nose and the mouth are all really close together. Fun little head is a little too long for my liking so I can make the back look a little bit bigger. I'm going to add the antennas that gooey house. As I'm drawing this, I'm wondering if you should still have ears. Since I am using digital art, I can, I can easily pop in some ears and see if I like how that looks. Yeah, I think it looks okay. It just looks more like a like a deer or an LLC, which can be its own luck. I'll just have some temporary ears as a sketch for now. And I can't forget the cheeks and the little goopy. Goopy line that actually starts at the mouth. I'm going to use a different color again. I can add a little bit of the drips. Now I'm just looking at other features that goo DRA house, but I'm kind of using mostly they're, they're both in the same evolution line, so it's ok. So I'm looking at the tail. I want to incorporate that next because it's another distinguishing feature. So I can just start with a cone shape and then it curves and circles. When I'm sketching, I'm not too worried about it looking super, super clean. Based on the contour of the body, I need to reposition the tail because there's a pattern that runs on under the mouth and then the chest going around. And then remember drawing through drawing through your picture. So when I'm drawing through my picture, I can see that this pattern that I draw the tail doesn't line up with the body. So I'm going to reposition, reposition that line. So it's good to fix things, guys, even though you're looking at the the thing you need to fix and you're like, God, it's going to take some time. It's better to do it anyway and spend the extra time. Because in the end it will look like it'll make more sense. It'll look better. Still looks a little funky. Shape wise. Can always fix it in the line work. I just wanted to look at the arms and legs. What do they look like? They look really pointy. So I might adjust the shape of a foot. So yeah. I don't mind what I have so far. I quite like it. Very cute. I'm going to have to do some more fixing because I don't really like this font. But again, just a reminder, you can always change it. Just like I'm changing it right now. Just try to make these changes before you start outlining any big changes you want to kind of sketch that in. But if you want to fix things during your line work, just make sure they're like small things. I want to take another look at EV, EVs ears because I might want to fix the shape of these ears so they don't look super, super dear life. They still look like, but I've kind of grown attached to that charm now. The charm of the deer ears. Yeah, I am happy with that. So I can add some more of those, like trippy, trippy effects. 4. Outlining and Colouring the Character: Okay, So I would say that I'm happy with my sketch and then I can start outlining it. I outlined one, I am going to outline the other one. I'm doing the antennas on the other side. I'm, what I'm gonna be doing is outlining the head as well. And then I can erase some bits over there. Since I'm using digital art. Just going to outline the ears now. So remember what I said about fixing things and a line art. So I find that the arms and legs are a little too long. So I'm going to adjust that as I'm outlining. Turn off my sketch to see what I have so far. I don't like that, so try it again. Oh, I never outlined the Shiny, shiny thing. You're gonna do that now. Here we go. While drawing a circle in one shot. It's really something else. So if you're drawing any circles on paper, just remember, take your time. Drawing circles digitally is kind of a different story. So I'm taking a look at these circles here. I might just keep it as one. The one circle on the cheek. Because it's getting a little too crowded on my drawing. That's what I have so far. My outline looks a lot nicer compared to my sketch. It's nice and clean. I'm gonna do the hind legs. I want to make sure that the legs so I'm drawing are consistent. So that just means I want them to look the same. In terms of the width, the height. I don't want to have one leg really, really wide and the other one really, really skinny. I'm almost done outlining my I don't really know what to call it. I'll I'll think of a name eventually. But for now, to save myself from embarrassment, I don't want to come up with something just yet for a name. So I'm just going to draw the little goopy bits in my head. I'm like, hmm, that's a weird name. I do not want to save that because it sounded embarrassing, but now I've said it a Gumi on. It just sounds like a like a lazy and names like there wasn't much thought put into Gumi on. Okay, So my outline is done. I'm just gonna do some quick coloring because just to save time really quickly, want to look at the colors. Gu DRA has. Boudreau slash Gumi, can make most of it a light purple. I have a really tiny Gumi figurine on my monitor. I don't even have a Gumi like in in my game. I don't even have fun because it's a shield exclusive, so I don't have gloomy. My friend owns it and wants to give me a gamete, but I need to renew my Nintendo Internet subscription. I'm too lazy. So I have the two main color. Green is important. The green cheeks. Green cheeks green. That's right. Doesn't have a no. So I'm wondering what color should the nurse be? Maybe green or dark dark purple. Yeah. Let's try a dark purple. That's okay. That's acceptable. Inside of the ears can be dark purple as well. I'm just going to color in these little goofy bits. The goopy bits are just going to erase them for some blending. Okay. There we go. I'm just gonna change the color of my outline. Yeah. Thank you guys. Thanks for joining me today. I'm going to end the class here. Yeah.
