Hi, I’m Christine Sherborne, an English ex-pat living in Australia. I attended Walsall School of Art UK and taught Art for a while before moving to New Zealand. Here I built a successful packaging business and did all the design work myself, which I enjoyed.

I then became a writer and wrote two novels, a self help book and then went on to record nineteen audios for Audible.com which are mainly meditations and hypnosis guides.

Returning to my first love, art, I have my artwork on Fine Art America, Etsy store, Society6 etc… Now I’m enjoying creating Skillshare classes.

Please visit my website to enjoy my mind, body and spirit articles to help my readers navigate our complex world with sage advice I’ve researched over the years. www.colourstory... See full profile

1. Sketch Techniques Introduction: Welcome to my class on creative ways to reuse your sketch out lines. To enhance your illustrations, will explore different techniques to incorporate your sketch layer into your finished pieces. Such as adding a gold foil effect and in addition, creating a white outline. As in this example. These methods will add interest and dimension to your paintings. I encourage you to experiment. Share your finished illustrations to class projects. Don't forget to hit the Follow button for updates on future lessons. Next, let's look at the class projects. 2. Sketch Techniques Class Project: The class project is for you to create an illustration using the traditional color blocking technique. Once you've completed that, you will then have the opportunity to experiment with some of the creative sketch outline ideas presented in this class. Instead of typically removing the sketch outline after color blocking, will focus on manipulating the sketch outline only. You will clearly see various creative ways to reuse it in your artwork. So let's move on to less than one. 3. Sketch Techniques Explained: Welcome. In this class or goes through the sketch techniques. Normally, we make changes to the sketch outline after color blocking, often by removing it altogether. So here I will simply use the sketch only to clearly show ways to change your outline technique. And then we'll move on in the next lesson to paint the entire illustration. So let's get started with the first technique. Open up your Canvas and import the sketch provided. Go to the brush and choose a soft airbrush. Then go to layers. Add a layer, make that layer a clipping mask. Now, in this technique, we're going to use a single color to create depth by using different shades of that color. E.g. you can use a light blue areas of the sketch that are closest to the viewer, like I'm doing here. Then move on to a darker blue. As you get further away. Now carry on using different shades. And you can play about with this to get the effect that you feel looks the best. So that's using one color to create depth. Now I'll move on to number two. Now we're going to create contrast. So go into your sketch layer. Adelaide. Change that layer to a clipping mask and using the same soft air brush. Now contrast will be colors like red and green, opposite ends of the color wheel. So we'll make a red bird. Green flowers. Another shade of red, another shade of green. Just contrasting the colors. Now we'll move on to technique number three. Now we're going to use color to create mood. So again, add a layer, clipping mask. Different colors can evoke different emotions. E.g. warm colors like red and yellow can create a sense of excitement or warm. Now you can do the same thing using cool colors to create a sense of calm or mystery. By choosing colors that are appropriate. You can create the mood you want to in your artwork and you can help enhance the overall impacts of your sketch outline. Now we're going to use color to add visual interest. Layer. Clipping mask. And we're going to use all different colors. So you might have a yellow flower. Floss. Green leaves. Even use purple for the bird. Maybe a dark blue for this bird. More yellow on the bus apply. This can help keep the viewer's attention and keep them engaged with the piece. Just try all sorts of different colors until you get a great effect. We can also use colors to convey information. This isn't the best illustration to show you that. Because what I'm really talking about is using different colors to represent different characters or objects in your artwork. So for instance, this bird might always be this color throughout your illustration. And the other character, a completely different color. Maybe the butterfly is another character. You have a different color again. I think you get the idea. So you would use this technique to convey information in a different kind of artwork. I just wanted to go through it quickly so that you can see the idea to use when you're doing particular characters. Here I want to show you how I've used the foil technique that I've used in my actual illustration. So we'll add a layer clipping mask. Then we'll go into the wrench tool, add, insert a photograph and bringing the gold foil. Because it's on a clipping mask, it will immediately fill in the sketch layer. Now I want to show you how to add another layer. Bringing the sketch. We going to make that sketch much larger. Then we will add another layer, make it into a clipping mask. And then maybe we can color part of that layering white or even yellow or even a green color. Now I think we'll just play about with that sketch and move it around. Now we're going to go on to the sketch layer, the second sketch, and just move it around. So it looks a lot better. You can always just, um, oops. You can always just tap the screen outside the square to move it very slightly. See it's covering up the goal there, so I'll move it out a bit more. So here I'm showing you how you can use a double layer. I'd like to show you a couple of other things you can do. Go into layer, choose the sketch layer. Going to the Magic Wand, choose Gaussian blur. And just blur. Sketch outline, which again gives you a different effect. Just one more. Go into the color layer. Duplicate this, press the N, and then put a screen on top. Screen actually looks quite nice on this one. Color Dodge. Just play about these different screens. I think that concludes most of the things that you can do with using the sketch layer. Now, in the next lesson, we're going to move on and paint the entire image. As I mentioned before. With this image, there'll be a goal for a line and a white outline. Just a reminder. We've gone through all the sketch techniques. But normally you would do them after you've done the color blocking. So let's move on. 4. Sketch Techniques Illustration: In this class, I will show you my whole process in making this illustration. I'll provide the reference photos and the sketch for you to use. If you prefer, you can choose your own illustration and just follow the process. I would love to see your finished work. Simply upload to class projects. Let's begin by choosing our Canvas. Tap the plus sign and choose your canvas size. Here, I've used 20 " by 30 " portrait. Or for those who use pixels, 6,000 by 9,000 pixels. And it's 300 DPI for best print quality. Next, I'll change the canvas color so white can be easily seen in the illustration. Now bring in your reference pictures. Press the wrench key, swipe the, insert a photo to the left. Now it reads insert a private photo. This means that on a video replay, the photos will be invisible to the viewer. Large the photo to the size that you want. Other layer, range key. Insert a private photo and bringing the butterfly. Tap that flip horizontal key and position the butterfly. Now we'll merge those two layers together. Merge down, click the N, and reduce the opacity. Choose the studio pen. And the size of that 40%. Choose a dark color to make your sketch. Add a new layer and sketch over your photo image. Now be sure to close our each of the shapes so that when you come to Color Fill, they won't bleed out into the rest of the picture. Now, I'll carry on making the sketch. Now there is my finished sketch. Now, add a new layer above the sketch layer, make it into a clipping mask. Tap the range key, insert a photo, and bringing the gold sheets. Now we have a gold sketch. Just for safety. Let's take off the background color and share as a PNG. So we've got it for future use if we should need it. Put the background back on so we can see what we're doing. Now we'll bring in the reference picture, tap the range key, Canvass, reference. So we can use this to color pick. Now, go into layers, tap on the gold layer and merge down. Now, make that sketch layer or a reference layer, add a new layer. And then we can start to color block. So pick your colors and simply drop them in. And continue on until you colored block the whole illustration. Now we're going to add a new layer and move it under the sketch layer. Tap the range key, insert a photo. And we're going to bring in the colored background. Add a new layer above that one. Now we're going to choose the willow charcoal brush, which comes with Procreate. Make it as large as possible. And then we're just going to tap around the outside with some darker colors. To frame our illustration. Can use several colors to do this. To make the texture a little bit more interesting. I get blue, darker color to the darker colors right in the corners. There we have our frame. Now we'll put in some shading. So choose the soft airbrush. I'm white. Lower the opacity and the size. And we're just going to make a new layer at the very top. And make this a clipping mask. We'll just add some shading, finished shading, and added in the flower details into layers. Add a new layer and put that layer above the sketch layer. And we're going to bring in our original sketch. And you can't see it because it's underneath there. So we're going to just make it slightly bigger. Now we're going to add another layer. Make it a clipping mask. Choose white and the soft airbrush. And then we're just going to make that sketch layer white. Just go over all the black pieces. Turn the opacity back. There. We have a nice sketch, white outline. Back into layers. Merge that down over the sketch layer. Merge the shading down into the block layer. Duplicate it. Go into the n. Let me go into make this color burn. But we're going to reduce the opacity just to bring a little bit of brightness back into the illustration. And that's it. We have a finished illustration. Like he's just staying with me. He got this far. And now I'll go into the wrapper. 5. Sketch Techniques wrap Up: Thank you so much for joining me in this illustration class.
