1. INTRODUCTION: Hello and welcome to my first Hillshire class, where I will teach you my techniques for creating beautiful digital shock lettering art on your iPad pro. I will walk you through purchasing the brushes on Etsy, importing them to the procreate app. I will also show you how I sketch out my designs and then bring them into the app in the procreate app. We will then together full letter. We will blend. Add shadows and shading as well. Add embellishments when you're finished with their final piece. That will also show you how you can add this to style stock photos or mock ups. In order to present your final piece to your friends by a social media, for example, For this class, you will need the iPad pro the apple pencil, the procreate ab and the brushes that we will purchase on etc. My name's Ruslana. I'm a graphic designer and a hand Lederer and I would love for you to come join me in creating some beautiful digital shock lettering. Art
2. BUY IMPORT & ADD BRUSHES: Okay, So the first thing we need to do is to go toe at sea and type in the search bar. Procreate, brushes, hit, enter. And then we will find the choc brush set by Lynn haven designs. Click on that and then purchase or by enter your purchase information and then go buy those brushes. We'll take you through the purchasing process. I just forward it to the download. So click on the download. And here are all the files that we need it that we need to download. We'll click on the 1st 1 and I used the eyes zip, app to unzipped. Thes. All right, so here we are. I'm gonna click on unzip when I go out on more, and we're just gonna click away on this, and it will open those three brushes that we have Unzipped just hit. Okay. Here. And Okay. So what I've tried is I tried, um, importing all three brushes at the same time. Um, and for some odd reason, that does not work. So if I click all three, you will tell me that that's not possible, so Okay, No. And we'll just have to click one brush and say open in and it procreate and procreate will open up with the last thing that you were working on. So we're just gonna click gallery at the plus button on the upper right hand side and hit. Create custom size. So you condone. Use whatever you want for your custom board, but we're gonna do 4000 by 5000 pixels right now. Okay? And I can rename this, and I'm just gonna call it 4000 by 5000 and hit enter and then automatically that board will open up. So now, if we click on brushes and at the very bottom of import brushes, there is that brush that we just imported. And if we scroll down our palates, um, we can open a new set and give this a name. We're gonna call it shock and then go back to imported brushes and click and drag that brush into the chalk palette. And there we have our first brush. So now we need it. Um, repeat this. So we go back to our files on check the f the 1st 1 and check the 2nd 1 hit open in and procreate. And there it is again in the imported brushes and drag and drop that into our choc pellet. Now we have to and will do the same thing again with 1/3 brush. Uncheck the 2nd 1 Check the 3rd 1 go open in procreate and go into the imported rushes and drag and drop that into your chalk pellet hopes. Okay, there we go. So we have three brushes. We're gonna do the same thing with the other files. Okay? Awesome. So what we now need to do is we need to add a couple of brushes. A swell. So we are going Teoh, duplicate that medium shock brush the thin one swipe to the left to duplicate. And then just click on that toe open, go to General and renamed the brush. We're gonna rename this to Corner Phil Corner Phil Hit. Enter. And that's the changes we're gonna make their, um, we're also going to change the size and capacity of the side. We're going to change the size to 12 and the capacity to 43%. Sorry for the blur. Okay, so 12 and 43. Next, we are going to go to calligraphy, and we're going to take the lettering brush and duplicate that as well Rename it under general. And I'm going to name this brush lettering, and I'm going to increase the size the maximum size to about 84% 85% and increase the minimal size 24%. About that will just give me a thicker thin line and go to dynamics and normal so that the glaze is gone and then drag that into my chalk palette. Okay, We're gonna need another brush. So we go back into calligraphy and we're just going to copy a monoline brush. So swipe to the left it duplicate, and then just drag that into the chalk brush palette, okay? And I'm just gonna leave. The name is Monoline as well, so but I'm going to change the size 2 28 Okay, now I'm gonna go back to brushes, and I'm going to go to calligraphy and duplicate that shock brush there, and I'm going to go to general and rename this thin diagonal. So these are gonna be my diagonal lines if I want to use that in my lettering. And so I'm just gonna drag and drop that into my chalk palette as well, and we're going to change the size to 15 and the opacity to 95%. Okay, so now we have all the brushes that we need.
3. COLOR PALLET: so for the colors were going to click on the little round circle at the top and then click on the plus to add a new color palette and click on the word. In order to give this a new name, we're gonna call it shock, and they're gonna click on the value button at the bottom to add our first hexi decimal code for our white. And we're gonna type in F three F zero e f and hit Enter. Then the color at the top will change and you can click in your first square, then delete the Hexi Decimal Code again and add 423 F 47 and hit. Enter the color at the top will change again and we can click on our second square and elite that code again and enter now for 8454 seed hit enter so that the color of the top will change again and we can hit our third square. And now we have our color palette completed
4. SKETCHING OUT YOUR DESIGN: The first thing we want to do is to sketch out what we're going to then drawing procreate as our chalk art. So for this project, I chose home sweet home. All right, but you are free to choose any other words that you want to use for this project and then when we have written up here, but we want to actually hand letter. What I like to do first is to kind of draw out lines of where the words are going to be. I like to do things very symmetrical. I would like to also work with banners. And so, for this one eyed shows the word sweet, the middle word to be a back to be in a banner and then have home above and below the banner. So basically, I am going half the banner in the middle and then have the word home kind of drape around that a bit and the other home below that quickly sketch this out. It's just a quick sketch. Okay, so up here, you can think about how swirly you want your words to be and maybe do a little differently down here. So this is just a rough sketch to kind of see what size your, um, lettering pieces going tohave. Someone is kind of rectangular, um, with the banner in the center and then home above and below that. So once you have your sketch ready, you can then take a picture of this and you couldn't. The most easy way is to use your iPad to just take a picture of that. Or you can use a picture of your phone and send it to your iPad and that import that into procreate where we're going to copy this.
5. IMPORT SKETCH & BRUSH LETTERING: Okay, so I'm going to go to the wrench and click on Image and insert a photo, and I'm going to click on all photos and find the blackboard background that I downloaded from the Lynn Haven designs. Okay, there it is. And I'm gonna pull this apart with my two fingers to make it fit the whole board and had the arrow to de select. You know, I'm going to add a new layer and a general thing for layers. You can click on the plus to add new layer. You can add lots, and you can pinch them together. If you want to combine them all down to one layer. You can also swipe lair to the left and either duplicate or deleted. So we're going to insert another photo. Because now we also need our sketch. Gonna find that sketch and make it big enough to fill our board. But we also have a little space left and right from our hand lettering. Okay. And now I'm going to rename this layer to design. We're sketch and I'm gonna take the opacity down. I thought I could barely see the pencil drawing. I'm gonna click the plus to add a new layer and name this brush lettering. Okay. And now I need my brush. I'm going to use the brush lettering brush, and I'm going to click on my white chalk color. Now, using the brush letter and techniques of having thick down strokes and thin up strokes, I'm going to draw on my home sketch. And if you have some lines, aren't quite thick enough, like here in the h. You could just go over that again. I'm going to do the same on the bottom. Just speed that up a bit. Okay? I'm gonna add a new layer for my banner and just rename this banner, and I'm going to use a monoline to draw the sketch of my banner. And later on, I'm going to draw on these lines with my medium chopped brush
6. FAUX LETTERING: So now I'm going to add a new layer and call this faux lettering, and I'm going to de select my design background, so I don't see that anymore. This is the moment now where you want to move around your layers to get them just right on your art board. So I'm gonna move around my, um, banner here that it's more centered and I'm going to draw around my home with my selection tool because it's on the same layer as the other home word. And then I can click on the arrow on, move that around till it's just right, and then hit the arrow again to de select. Now I'm going to cream my capacity up again and pinch my banner and my home layers together and then take the capacity down to about 20% for that whole new layer now. So we want the medium chalk brush, and we're going to go on our full littering layer and zoom in here, and we're going to now trace our letters with our medium chock brush. So all the thick lines are gonna have to lines which can be then filled, and all the thin lines or the up strokes are going to just have one line. And we need a nice We need a good space in between in order to fill that. So don't make those too thin. So we're just gonna trace all of these letters now with our foe lettering, and I'll just pulled up through do that again. Okay, It was going to speed this up. And I like Teoh like the m go out of go out from the corner and not cross that middle line from them. So I'll show you can hear with us. M I have my first bar that I'm going to start in the right corner. See, I don't want across that I want to start in the right corner said I said, I will not cross my m with a line. Okey doke. All right. And that's that
7. CHALK BLENDING: So we finished our full lettering for both of the whole words. And the next thing we're going to do is we're going to go into our layers and we're going to add another layer and rename it blend and hit it at her. Okay, so now we are on this layer, and for this now we're going to use the light jog round brush. So we're gonna zoom in here, and what we're now going to do is we're going to imitate this. We're going to bring, um, shock into the center and have the center of the letter show the chalkboard through and we're going to do the same from the bottom upwards. So we're going to pull chalk, We're gonna basically imitate the smudging. We're gonna draw chalk on the top on the bottom and then smudge it towards the center. So for that, we need to make sure that we were on our white John color, and now we're just going to start drawing in. Now. The thing that we need to know about this brush is I want to show you up here with a lot of pressure. You get a very thick stroke with little pressure. You get a very thin stroke. Now, the more pressure I have, the more the layers blend together. If I do, small lines are with not a lot of pressure. I'm going to see more lines, and we want it to be very, um, uniforms. So it's going to click back on all of these lines that I created here. Okay, Now, if you go over the if you draw over the lines from our full lettering, that's not bad at all, because we can just hit the eraser. And since this is on a different layer, we can just erase right up to our full lettering lines. We're gonna hit the brush again and just gently pull down with a little bit of pressure. I went over the lines here again. Okay, so and also what we want to create is kind of kind of like a bridge shave over here. We're just going to go right up to the edge of the full lettering. Okay? So when we have most of our blending in here, you can see that it's really tough, since this is a pretty broad brush to get into the corners over here. So for that, I created another brush, which is the brush that we named Corner Phil. It's basically are medium chock brush over here. But what we did is we have o pay city down a lot like less than half. It's basically the same brushes as our foe lettering, but because the opacity is down, capacity is down. Um, we can just beautifully fill in these corners, so we're gonna do the same thing. Just gonna erase of my Paris trip it and erase this now also went over the lines here a bit with my blending, so I'm just gonna erase that as well. There we go. OK, so we're gonna do the same now pulling upward. So I'm going to go on my brush again. Make sure that I have my light chalk around the big one. And now I'm going to pull my chalk upward, putting a little bit of pressure on it so that I get that nice even flow of chalk lending. And we're gonna about believe this part, um, to show through the chalkboard so we don't want to get too close or also will just be, um, to light. And we want to be ableto have some of this darker chalkboard area. And again here now, here. We had our arch here. Now we're going to have our arch just mirrored down here, okay? And we're just going to add a little bit of right down here is Well, I think that's enough. We're gonna hit my eraser again. Just take away all of the the blending that would over my full lettering. Okay, so over here at the edge again, We're going to go hit the corner, Phil Brush. It's not It's really not bad over here. We just want that go over it lightly. They're So there is our first line that we did to create a natural looking, blending chalk technique. So we're into the same thing now for each of these, um, blocks that we have. So I'm gonna go here to the light round brush again and pull this down with some pressure. Thinking of this arch that I wanna have patting And somewhere here. Okay, that looks good. And could hit my eraser again. Take away from the sides and then go back to my corner. Phil, brush. I'm just lightly go over the corner. You don't want to overdo this step, or else it will just look to two filled up too dark. A too well to light. I guess. Um it will look natural anymore, So don't overdo that step. And now we want to go back to our light round brush and just pull out of this corner and pull upward. So you're still allowed to see the phone lettering lines? We're not trying to match the lightness. Um, that is just one big, quite block. We do want to see the lines of the full lettering a bit. And now we're going to go back to our corner, Phil, and just pull out of this corner. That's beautiful. Okay? And we're going to hit the eraser again. There we go. Okay, Now, this is the last little bit that we need to do on the H. That is looking great. So what we're gonna do now is just we're going to fill in all of these letters with the lending technique that I just showed you, and then we're going to work on our better
8. BANNER: Okay, so now that we have both of her home words blended in, we're going to now to her banner. So we needed switch on the brush lettering layer again, and we're going to hit a new layer and rename this one banner enter. Okay? And now we are going to need our, um, medium chock brush, and we're just going to trace Polier that we already have here. And that wasn't very good. Let's do it again. We're gonna hit a new layer because we might not get the words sweet, perfectly centered into our batter. So if we have it on a separate layer, then we can move it around after we've written it. And we're going to rename. We're just going to call it sweet, because that's what we're going to be writing in here. So, what's closed this now? This is actually on the wrong layer. So go back to Banner closed us, and now we can go back. Sweet. Okay, so we're gonna write sweet and we're going toe. Um, we want these to be block letters. We're going Teoh, write them like this so that we can fill in these letters later on another earlier. So the the further the lines furthest on the left are going to be thicker. And the rest is gonna be thin. Make these a little longer. Okay? All right. Knowing I'm just looking to see if they're all spaced out evenly the letters. And if you have to rearrange a little bit, you can hit the selection tool. And I want to move the w just a bit to the left from the E. This space over here is a little too small for me, but I don't want to move just the WRL So be too close to the s. Some selecting both hitting the karaoke even. And then I can move these two a little away from the hit. The air would tool again to de select. Okay, now I want to move my s up just a bit. Hit the arrow again, then. No, I can move my ass up just a tad, okay? That is looking great. No, what we're going to do is add shadows to everything
9. ADD SHADOW LINES: a nice little trick that I'd like to use when I chocolate or something is that I use in eraser on a pencil in order to take away chalk to have a shadow line. So if I use my pencil, my eraser are a pencil and draw a line in front of my talk littering. I'm taking away any chalk dust that is on the chalkboard and it leaves a dark Chris blind. So this is basically what we're going to try to imitate and procreate. We can take a dark color from a spot on the chalkboard that is very dark and use that color as the actual shock board, um, color, which is underneath the chalk dust. We're going to use that color and use the medium chock brush. And we're just going to basically draw a line in front of the lettering which resembles our eraser lines, which are going to add depth to our design. So now I need a new layer, and we're going to rename this shadow hit enter. Okay, so what we're gonna do is we're going to change the color and if you remember, we have to dark grays. We're going to use the darker grey of the two of these. The other great will use it. The end. So we're gonna use this grain out the darker green. Select that. And then we also wanna have our medium cha crush selected again. Which is the one that were you also used for all of the full lettering. Okay, we're gonna be on our shadow glare, and we have our brush and our color selected. So what we now want to do is we create these shadow lines with just a little bit of space in between the letters of the chalk letters and the shadow. So there needs to be a little bit of space. We're not gonna draw those shadow lines. Exactly. Um, right next to the chalk lettering, we're gonna have a little bit of space in between. So and what is also important is that we really make sure that we have all of our shadow lines on the right side of the letters. So we're going to do all of the shadows on the left hand side, so every critical line is gonna have a shadow on the left. So this is gonna have a shadow on the left. This is gonna have a shadow on the left. He reset again. So I'm just gonna start here on my furthest left. Now we're here in a very, very dark part of our chalkboard. It gets lighter in the center. So don't be worried if you don't really see the shadow line that you're drawing, because now we're in the very dark parts of the the chalkboard, so you won't necessarily see them very well. Yes, I'm still going to draw them. And when we get to the lighter parts of our chalkboard, you're gonna be able to see those lines Very well. Okay, Let me just Let's see. Okay, The thing is, now here, I can see that I drew over my full lettering. So erase that again with tapping two fingers. And just make sure that you don't draw on the white of your full lettering when you're doing these shadows. Because some quarters could get kind of tricky here. Now we can see the shadow line already a little bit better because our shock word is getting lighter. If it gets very tight than just endure shadow line a little above that tight corner because you just don't want Teoh draw on the white with your dark. Okay, Now we're getting into a lighter parts of the chalkboard. You can really start to see that beautiful shadow line. Okay, We're gonna draw Shana line here as well on all of the left side's. Okay? No, I can draw these two lines. Been one, because this is the down stroke, and this is a down stroke. Um, opened there. It went. Let's get that back. Okay, beautiful. So now, when you have all of your lines just to go over it again and make sure that you really have a shadow line on each left hand side of a downs of not a down stroke of any vertical line.
10. BANNER SHADOWS & HIGHLIGHTS: So what we still need to do is we need to give this banner a little bit of blending. So we're going to go back to our shock. We're gonna hit a new layer. We're gonna reading this to banner blending and hit Enter. Okay, now we're gonna go back to our light shock around, and we're gonna do is we're just going new pull a little bit shadow into from the ends of the banner in and just imagine that you're drawing the chalk here, and you're smudging this into the center. I just got a race a little bit here, and we're also going to blend in a little from the sides here. And as with the letters on the outer parts of the letters going to go in a little longer and the center a little further back so that we have this arch gonna use our corner Phil to kind of draw a line right there, which kind of gets it a shine of the the movement of the ribbon. I'm just gonna leave this blank over here, um, and go back to the That's brush here. I think I'll give this corner a little bit. Alright. So the race, everything that went over our full lettering, our corners. Okay. You can also use your quarter. Feel here, feel like Okay, Go back to our light round brush. Okay, here is a child here and there. And then again, hit the corner, Phil brush to just add one and add some pressure here. So we have a little bit of, like a light effect there. Okay, That is looking great. Now what we're going to do is we're going to add yet another earlier and rename this to see Thai, uh, gunnel lines. Okay, so we want to have our white, and now we're going to use our thin diame inal brush. So in doing these diagonal lines, I like to go back and forth just a little bit so that they get a little brighter because though passages down here as well. So try to keep these diagonal lines at the same distance at the same angle throughout all of your letters. And I'm not adding a lot of pressure here, holding the pencil very lightly, okay. And what I think I want to do here is well, I'm going to go back to my shadow layer changed my color to the dark, the darker, dark gray. And then, um, draw some shadow lines. Here is well, cape. As you can see, nothing happened here because my batter blending is on top of my shadows. So I need to move my shadow layer above the batter blending. And now you can see those lines. Okay, there we have a shadow on sweet as well.
11. ADD SHADING: So now you're going to do some shading on her letters. And for that, we're going to click on the lighter grade. We're going to add another layer and rename this shading hit Enter. And now what we're gonna do is we're going to some shading on those letters that have lines that cross on themselves. So we have the h here. We're basically just gonna add some shadow. Whoa! That was the wrong brush. We need to go to our Shader eraser rush, and we're basically just going to draw along beneath those lines and kind of lightly on a little shadow, um, to that, and just go up on the edges a little bit, okay? Says you can see the effect of this. Um, it looks like this stroke of the ages actually getting some dimension now that it's lying on top of the H. Um, it stands out a little bit more if you compare this part to this here. This line is very this is a very two dimensional, and this is kind of giving it a three dimensional look. So we're gonna do the same over here, And if you kind of, like, move up into the white line too much. Then just click on your eraser and erase that part away because we do not want this shadow line that's shading to go into our lettering. And we just wanted to be very light. So I try to do it a little, um, and more down here and just very lightly above. Okay, so that has quite an impact By just adding a little bit of this, um, shading right and do the same here by the O. And what I'm also going to do is I'm gonna add so over here, um, so that it looks like that was on top of this, um, h stroke there. When you're done drawing your shading, always zoom out a bit and see, Does this look natural or do you see lines? If it looks like it's too much of a line drawing, then go back and kind of traded. Um, smudged this a bit by drawing over it again. Maybe in it from a different angle. That looks better. Okay, so we have case. Our O line is also crossing on its own here again. So we're going to draw this line here is well and I want this to be very crisp. Now, it's kind of like going into my white line a little too much. So I'm going to just use my eraser to get that nice, crisp white corner again. So feel free to use your eraser to just get some crisp lines here. And that was too much. That's still too much. Believe that. Okay. Here again, I wanna have some shading before the other letter. Just that's looking good. Um, we don't really need any shading on the, um, going toe again, starting with a new layer at some shading here. That's looking good. And I could also, if you want to I like to add some shading on the E in this little part here. Just erase away anything that goes over, okay, that is looking great. Loving was age over here. Now I want to do the same over here. Um, now, since with this age, we don't really have our stroke here, um, in a blended chalk area. So the only thing that we can do here for the shading is basically on our full lettering because you wouldn't see it here anyway if I drop there so I'm just gonna add a little bit of this below and above came. See what that does Think it's really pretty to give just that bit of dementia. All right, that's looking great. Okay, so we're done with our shading. So next work, we're going to do some decorating.
12. ADD DECORATION FLOURISHES: So add some decorations. We're going to add another layer. Gonna rename this decoration it enter, and we need to go back to art shock color, and we're going to get go back to our medium cha crush. Okay, so wouldn't have too much space here, But I do like to use the corners so ready to start at this corner, and I'm going to just draw awesome Provine shapes and some droplets and then jaw fueled dots here. No one in the same thing up here. I could just copy and paste, but we want, um to kind of have a handmade look about this. 123 Okay, Now, what we would like to do in these little shapes as well is to add a little bit of this blending as well. And here I can just very, very lightly add in some some blending, because the shape, of course, is very, very small. And then I can go back with my corner, Phil, and just kind of light on those dark corners. I was looking good already. The same thing down here, nobody knew. Go back to my light round brush, so I'm not gonna fill out this whole droplet, but just kind of leg, the top and the left hand side of it. And if you go over, um, can't use the research on this. And this is why we used to different layers for the shady, for the blending and for the line drawing. Because if I want to erase the the blending here and I have both on one layer, I'm going to erase the line during a swell. So you can either do this on two layers or you need to be careful. Um, with the one larry that you're using, I'm gonna go back to my corner, Phil, just fill in these quarters very lightly. All right? We need to do one more thing. We need to add another layer, and you need to sign your beautiful piece. So somewhere in the bottom. Right. Um, in this case, I'm going to use my last letter. You're just going to use your then brush and you're gonna sign your initials for your name , um, Abbott to your work, and we're done. Okay, So now we click on the layers and these air the lives that we want to pinch together now, so that they're all one layer. And then we go on the arrow, the selection tool, and move our whole design a little away from the top left corner because it was a little crowded up there. So now we can export by clicking on the wrench and share and hitting J Peg. And I'm going to save this to my files to my iCloud and just hid ad and keep both so that I have this now on my iCloud.
13. STYLED STOCK PHOTOS & MOCKUPS: Once you have exported your piece as a J peg, you can then add it to a background in photo shop, for example. You can easily do that by opening up a styled stock photo, for example. This is one of mine here, and what we're gonna do is we're just gonna basically put our picture on top of this white piece of paper here. So I'm just gonna drag this right into the picture and I'm gonna hover over the little arrow to rotate it. And then I'm going to hit my shift key to size it, but keeping the shape and that I'm just going to want to position it in a way that it covers all of the white paper so needed rotated just a little bit and hit the shift key again to pull this a little bigger. What I can also do is I can right click and go to perspective to then make this look like it's lying a little flatter because at the moment it's just looking like I stuck it on this picture. But if you tweak the perspective a little bit, it looks more like it's actually lying down on this So then I could just move this around till I like where it is. And it's covering all of the white paper. And then I hit Enter. I can also go on the effects of the bottom and get a shadow. So I like to keep the shadow here on the right bottom side and Aiken, adjust the size and how far away the shadow is. I like to keep the size of this about this much, so just keeping the levels down a bit Hit, Okay. And now you can export this by clicking on file and export as explored export as. And then you can just click export. All right, here. And give this a name and save it in your files. The other thing weaken dio is we can using mock up. So this is a market by bought. And if I click on the file, this here is where it says double click on the thumbnail. So double click on that it opens a new window. And this here is again where I can drag and drop my design And it already has the exact size of this frame. So then I hit, enter and save And then I go back into my mark up. And there it is. It is in the frame. So here again, I can go file export as and export this. I don't want to just save this. I want to export it because I have multiple layers. So my exporting it, I just export the whole thing.
14. FINAL THOUGHTS & STUDENT PROJECT: and that's it. We're done. You created your piece of digital chock littering artwork. I look forward to seeing your final piece in the project section.
