1. Introduction: Hi everyone, my name is Colleen. Welcome to my class. Creating an animation for someone that doesn't have drawing skills can be challenging and discouraging. This is why I have created an easy way to make animations that doesn't require drawing skills. And in this lesson, I will show you how to create these cool animations. Whether you are a female or male, you can follow these steps that I'm going to show you and apply these techniques to your animations. I have created these animations by filming myself and other people with a smartphone using a static image that I have animated. The tools we need for this class is Adobe Photoshop. If you want to make an animation where you are the subject, the first step is to film yourself or take a selfie, depending on the type of animation that you would like to make. Then the next steps consist of selecting the images of the animation stylized and adjust them and then save them. We will continue with the animation process in Adobe Photoshop and export it in GIF or MP4 format. I will show you the process is for the majority of the animations you have seen in this introduction. And I can't wait to reveal you my tips and tricks. So let's get started. 2. Stylizing The Image: Let's start with a simple animation based on an image. There is an awesome tool on the internet which is called to me. You might heard about it, but if you didn't, you will now have the opportunity to explore these free photo editing app that changes your picture into cartoon drawings. Upload here your photo by clicking on the plus sign. For the free version, you will have a watermark on the bottom at the right side of your image. Click on the cartoon options on the right side and choose your favorite cartoon style. You can also click on Labs button, then on. Let's try and have fun with more cartoon versions. If you don't like the style, then you can come back to the original page and click on More Styles. If you click on the fourth style from the top, you will have the option to choose some cute tune stories on the bottom. These two stories are available for females and males version as well. Let's explore the female version first and then the male version. I have got on one of my friends picture for this animation. After you have decided which cartoon style you like, download the picture. 3. Paris Girl – Creating The Animation: In this example, we are going to create these cute animation with a girl and her little login Paris. Once the stylized image downloaded, open it in Adobe Photoshop, I am going to erase the watermarks from all the images only for these exercises and I will use the patch tool. The first step for this tutorial is to select an isolate the part of the picture that will be animated. In this case, the skirt will be blowing in the wind and the doggy will be tilting his head. The Quick Selection Tool and select the dog's head. Rectify those selection with the lasso tool if needed. On the top menu, click on select, modify, and expand the selection with one pixel. Right-click in the selected area and select Layer via Copy to create a new layer only with the dog's head. Drag the layer one down towards the plus sign to create a copy rename Layer, want to dog one allele, one copy to D2 with the layer D2 selected press Control plus T on Windows or Command D on Mac. To select the Free Transform tool, we are going to rotate the dog's head to the left, the center or the free transform tool down to set the rotation point at the dog's neck base and hit Enter, select layer dog one, and drag it down towards the plus sign to create a copy. Move this layer above the layer D2 and rename it to dock free. Select again the free transform tool, as we are going to rotate the dog's head to the right. Pull the center of the Free Transform tool down to set the rotation point at the dog's neck base and hit Enter. Now we are going to erase the dog's head from the background layer, select the dog's head and drag the selection with the Patch Tool to the right. Now let's isolate the skirt to select the skirt with the Quick Selection Tool and lasso tool on the background layer. Right-click in the selected area and choose Layer via Copy to create a new layer only with the skirt. Rename this layer sqrt one. Drag the layer sqrt one down towards the plus sign to create a copy and rename this layer to skirt to, to create an animation in Adobe Photoshop, you have to open the timeline panel in the menu at the top, click on Window and select from the drop-down window timeline. At the bottom of your window, you will see the timeline open where you can create your animation. In the center of the timeline panel, click on the arrow at the right and select Create Frame Animation. A very important detail is to enable the timeline which might be grayed out. So to enable it, press the button, Create Frame Animation. And you will see the first frame appearing in the timeline. Hide the layer skirt to by clicking on the icon on the left in the menu on the top, click Edit than puppet wrap. This tool will help to manipulate the skirt. Click on the skirt to create beans and drag the pins to the right as shown on the screen. Repeat these steps on layer sqrt two, but this time, drag the piece to the left. In the timeline panel, click on the plus icon to create a new frame. Click on frame one and make visible only the layers, background and dog one. With the second frame selected, make sure that only the following layers are visible. The background, Scott won and dog one. Create the first frame by clicking on the plus icon and make visible the layer background, sqrt two and Dongguan. Now create a fourth frame and the visible layers should be background, sqrt two and D2. Continue by adding the fifth frame which corresponds with layer background. And D2 frame seeks goes with layer background, sqrt one and D2. The seventh frame goes with background, Scott one and Dongguan. Frame aid goes with layer background and dug one. Now select frames 78.9, press the key Alt on Windows, Option key on Mac, and drag all the free frames to the right to copy them and create a repetition. Click on the plus icon to create the third thin frame. The visible layer should be background and dark free. Create the 14th frame and make visible the layer background, Scott one and dock free. Create Frame 15 and make visible layer background sqrt two and Dockery. If you play the animation without setting the frame delay, it looks quite stereotype. Domain the animation more natural, we have to set a delayed time to the frames. To do so, select frames to eight, then 1,113.15. Then click on the small arrow on the frame where is written. Second. Click Other and then set the delay to 0.43. Click OK. Center delay on frame one to 0.3. Select frames 34.12 and set the delay to 0.17. On the fifth frame, set the delay to 0.57. On frame 14, set it to 0.43. Frame six should be 0.07. Frames seven should be 0.27, and frame nine set it to 0.57. Now let's play the animation. There is a correction to be done on frame 9.12. Hide the layer sqrt two. Now let's export this animation in GIF format. In the top menu, click on File, export and Save for Web Legacy. On the top right, select GIF, selective and diffusion. Then click Save. 4. Biceps Flex – Stylizing and Preparing The Image: Let's continue by creating an animation for males. Upload your image to tune me. Click on the Fourth Style cartooning from the top. Choose from the tune stories, the image with the biceps and download it. Open the image in Adobe Photoshop. We will have to isolate the left arm to create the biceps flexion motion. Take the Quick Selection Tool and click on the onto selected. In the menu on the top, click on Select, Modify, and Expand. Enter the value one to expand the selection and click Okay, Right-click in the selection area, choose Layer via Copy and rename the layer arm one. Drag this layer down towards the plus sign to duplicate it and rename the layer onto. Now we will have to erase the arm from the background layer. So in order to do this, press Control on the keyboard in Windows or Command on Mac, and click on the icon of the layer arm one to select the arm, click on the background layer thick the eyedropper tool, and select a sample of the blue background on the top menu, select Edit, and then fill with the foreground color. They are remnants of the arm outline left on the blue circle that you can erase using the patch tool and the clone stamp tool. In order to get rid of the blue part that exceeds the blue circle. Take the elliptic curve market to place it in the center of the circle. Press Alt plus Shift key on the keyboard in Windows or Option and Shift on Mac. And drag to create a selection circle that matches the blue circle. Reposition the selection if needed. Right-click in the selection area and click on Select Inverse. Take the clone stamp tool and erase the blue part. Select the arm to layer, then go to the top menu and choose Edit and puppet wrap. Set the few pins as shown on the screen. Take the pin on the top and drag it to the left. Add more pins in order to rectify the shape of the arm and adjust the shape of the biceps in order to look relaxed, hit Enter. 5. Biceps Flex – Creating The Animation: Now we're going to create the animation on the top menu. Click on window, then select timeline. In the center of the timeline panel, click on the arrow at the right and select Create Frame Animation. Press the button, Create Animation, and you will see the first frame appearing in the timeline. Hide the layer arm two for this first frame, press the plus sign at the bottom of the timeline to create another frame, and this time make the layer up to visible and hide the layer one. Now we will have to set a delay time for the frames. On the first frame, click on the small arrow where it's written. Second, click Other and set that to 0.5. Set the delay on the second frame to two. If you wish to add some text to your animation, continued to follow the next steps. Thank the horizontal type tool. Click in the image and write your own slogan, and then choose to display or hide the text layer on the frame of your choice. Export the animation by clicking on File export and Save for Web Legacy. On the top right, select GIF, selective and diffusion, and then click Save. 6. Moon Girl – Stylizing and Preparing The Image: Upload your photo as explained in the previous lessons on to the site and download the image with the girls sitting on the moon. Open the image in Adobe Photoshop and drag the background layer towards the plus sign to duplicate the layer. Rename this layer, layer one. Go on the background layer and try to recreate the background starting from the character's knees as we will create an animation of the leg. Use the clone stamp tool to copy parts of the background. Use the patch tool to homogenize the colors. Go on layer one and select the character and the moon using the Quick Selection tool in order to separate them from the background. On the top menu, click select, modify, and expand the selection with one pixel on the top menu, go to Layer, Layer via Copy to separate the character from the background. I did this election in two times as the Quick Selection Tool would take the background too when I tried to select the left side of the moon. Now we have to copy the left side of the moon in the same way as explained before. Merge the top two layers with the character and the moon to have only one layer. Delete the intermediate layer, which had only the background. Duplicate layer one and rename it to layer two. With the layer selected, go to Edit and select puppet wrap. Put some pins as shown on the screen. Move the right leg slightly to the right and hit Enter. Duplicate the layer, and rename it to live free. With the puppet wrap function, move the right leg again to the right. 7. Moon Girl – Creating The Animation: Display the timeline in Adobe Photoshop as explained in the previous lessons, and choose Create frame animation. For the first frame, make visible layer background and layer one. Add a new frame and make visible layer background and layer to add a new frame and make visible layer background and layer three. Duplicate the second frame by clicking on it. Then press the Control and ask key in Windows or Command and Option on Mac, and drag the frame after the first frame to create the fourth frame. Set the delay on the fourth frame to 0.2. Now duplicate the layer one and drag it above the layer free and rename it to live for. Use the puppet rep, to move the right foot to the left and hit Enter. Create a new frame and make visible only the layer background layer for set the delay on the fifth frame to 0.1. Change the first frame delayed to 0.2, and the second frame, the first frame to 0.3. Now let's make those stars shine bright in the sky. Go to the layer background and select the styles as shown on the screen with the pen tool. Create a selection by right-clicking anywhere in the image and choose, Make Selection. Copy the start by creating a new layer. This will be the layer number five, and it should be visible on the frame tool. Let's make this star brighter. So with the layer selected, go on the top menu, click on Image Adjustment and put the brightness value at 116. Make sure that layer five is hidden on frame one. Repeat the steps with copying the other stars and making them brighter. The new layer six should be visible only on frame one. You can hide or make visible the stars according to your own taste or follow my steps in the video. Export the animation by clicking on File export and Save for Web Legacy can reduce the file size by reducing the image to the half of its current size. On the top right, select GIF, selective and diffusion, and then click Save. 8. Animation Based On A Video – Choosing The Images: Let's take an example of creating an animation based on the video. You can either use a video or you can feel yourself as I did for this video, whose length is 2 s, it took 15 screenshots that I used in Adobe Photoshop, a form iframes, on my iPhone. I took the first screenshot at the beginning of my video. I have resized it and saved it on my phone. You can take the screenshot on your computer as well using the snipping tool. Then I took my next screen shots where there was a significant change in the movement in my video. Once the screenshots are done, transfer them to your computer. 9. Animation Based On A Video – Stylizing The Images: Now let's have some fun and cartoon the screenshots for this animation, I have chosen the fifth version from the top. Upload your images onto me, one-by-one cartoon and save them on your computer. I have downloaded the image and surprisingly I didn't get the watermark stranger. Sometimes you get the watermark and sometimes not. 10. Animation Based On A Video – Rectifying The Images: I really raised the water max from all the images only for these exercises. And I use the clone stamp tool. In order to use the clone stamp to press Alt key on Windows and Option key on Mac to select the source area. And really is the key to start cloning. Note that if you have a picture with the hand on your face area, to me will not be able to process it properly. I will show you how to rectify this image. Luckily, on the next image, the hand looks more defined and I will use this picture to rectify the previous one. With the two images opened, select the finger on the second image with the pen tool. Right-click anywhere on the image and choose, make a selection from the menu. Go to the top main menu, click on Layer, New Layer via Copy. Copy this new layer, paste it in the previous image, and position the finger with the move tool to cover the default one. You can adjust the finger and rotate it with the Free Transform tool by pressing Control T on Windows or Command T on Mac. In my case, I have a dark fringe on the tip of the finger that I would like to delete. So I clicked on the layer and press Control a in Windows or command in Mac to Selected, move the selection down. I right-clicked on the selection and selected Inverse selection from the menu. Then I deleted the darker fringe. Now it's time to blend this layer into my image and hide the harsh edges. For this, I will have to add the mask to my layer. I also adjusted the levels of this layer to make it seamless even more. There is a correction to be made around the mouth area. So I have selected this zone with the Patch Tool and drag it towards a similar color area. As you have noted, there are no nails on the fingers. So I sought an image from the Internet on Pixabay where you can find free stock photos and added them to my image. Find your favorite nice style. Copy the image and paste it in the document in Adobe Photoshop. Make a selection with the pen tool around the nails, accepting the thumb, select the nails, right-click anywhere in the image and select, Make Selection in the menu. Copy and paste the nails in the cartoon image, adjust the size, orientation, levels, brightness, and opacity to make them look as natural as possible. Of course, you can take a picture of your own hand, cut out toenails, and use it for your animation images. If you encounter the same issue with deformed hands on the next pictures, just copied the layer with the nails and the default finger, piers them to the new image and adjust the positions. Because the hand is in motion on the next image is and the hand is blurred. I were blurred the nails as well. 11. Animation Baed On A Video – Adding Elements: I wanted to add some hearts to my animation on each image that simultaneous blowing a kiss. I have opened all these images in Adobe Photoshop in the order of the animation. I will work in parallel on each image. Add a new layer to your image and draw a heart shape with the pen tool on the lips. Of course, you can draw as many hard sizes and colors and position them as you wish. I use the gradient tool to fill the heart. Then I have added the contour, but this step is not necessary. All depends how your final image would like you to look. To create the outline, select the layer with the heart by pressing Control on Windows or Command on Mac. And click on the Layer icon. Right-click on the selection area and choose Stroke, put one pixel, choose the color black, and then click Okay. Reduce the opacity of the layer to 64. Drop shadow to this heart. Double-click on the layer, drop shadow and put the values as you see on the screen. Copy the layer with the heart and paste it to the next image. Position the heart further away from the lips with the move tool to simulate the blowing action. Duplicate this layer to create another heart, reposition it, then rotate and resize it with the transform tool. The shortcut is Control plus T for Windows or Command D on Mac. Duplicate this layer and reposition, rotate and resize the heart. Copied the free layers with the heart and paste them to the next image. Duplicate another layer with heart and create the fourth heart. And duplicate again a layer to create the fifth heart. Save all your images in JPEG or PNG format. 12. Animation Based On A Video – Creating The Animation: Open all your images created in Adobe Photoshop. Copy all the images starting from the second image into the first image in order to create the layers for the animation. Close the images that are copied without saving them. Open the timeline on the menu at the top, click on Window than timeline. In the timeline, choose Create Frame Animation. Then click on the button, Create Frame Animation. In order to create the first frame, leave visible only the first layer. Click on the bus below to create another frame and make visible the second layer, repeat the operation of creating new frames and associating a new layer with the new frame. Each layer has to correspond to a frame. Now we will have to add some dynamism to the animation. So we will rotate and re-scale a few layers. Start rotating to the right and resize the layer with the first heart. Go on the next layer and rotate it a bit more than the previous one and resize it. Repeat these steps with the next layer. Now you will have to do the reverse process of the rotation to bring the next images progressively back to the initial position and resize them. If you play the animation without setting the frame delay, the rhythm of the animation is quite stereotype. To make the animation more natural, we have to set the frames delayed time. Said the following frames delay for frame 14.5, set it to 0.2. Frames 3.15 to 0.5, frame six to 0.1, and leave all the other frames at 0 s. Once the delay time is done, export the GIF. On the top menu, click on File, export, Save for Web Legacy. Select GIF on the top right. Than selective and diffusion. You can try to reduce the file size by limiting the colors. I kept 256 colors for a nice result. Now, open the gift in your browser to check if it works. 13. Butterfly – Stylizing and Preparing The Image: This cute gift is so easy to create as we only have to animate the wings. Upload your photo into to me. Click on the fourth icon from the top on the left side and download the butterfly cartoon image. Open your file in Adobe Photoshop, press W to select the Quick Selection tool. Drag the tool all around the character to select it. Click on the Layer menu and select New Layer via Copy to create a layer only with the character. Take the eyedropper tool, select the background layer and select the color of the background. Go to Edit and choose Fill and click Okay to fill the background. Grab the Quick Selection Tool and select only the girl, but not the wings on layer one. Click on the Layer menu and select New Layer via Copy. Pool, the layer two under the layer one. Grabbed the Quick Selection Tool and select only the wings on layer one. Click on the Layer menu and select New Layer via Copy. Delete Layer one. Duplicate the layer free and rename it to live for. We are going to modify layer four in order to create flapping wings. Go to Edit and select puppet wrap at points all around the wings close to the subject to prevent it to move. We want to move only the top of the wings. The pins, the wings and hit Enter. Repeat the steps again. Hello. 14. Butterfly – Creating The Animation: Go to Window and click on timeline as we are going to create the animation of the wings. On the first frame, hide layers 4.5 and a new frame and hide the layer three. And again, a new frame, and this time hide the layer four and make visible layer five. Hit play. Your animation is ready. Export the GIF by selecting File export, Save for Web Legacy, and reduce the image size to 500 instead of a 1080. 15. Motorbike – Animation With Sound: In this lesson, I am going to show you how to make an animation with sound. Upload your photo into tune me. Click on the fourth icon from the top on the left side and download the motorbike cartoon image. For this animation, I have provided you with a sound file in the project and resources tab. Now open the timeline to create the animation. Drag the background layer towards the plus sign to duplicate the layer. Rename this layer, layer one. Add a new frame and Hide Layer one from the first frame. Make visible layer one on the second frame, select layer one and press Control plus T on Windows or Command plus T on Mac. To select the Free Transform tool, rotate the image on layer one slightly to the right and hit Enter Duplicate Layer one, rename it to layer two and create a new frame. For this first frame and make visible background layer and layer to rotate the image slightly and increase it on layer two. Duplicate Layer two and rename it to lay a free. Then create a new frame and make visible only layer free and the background. Rotate the image again slightly to the right and increase it. Repeat again, find times the steps with creating a new layer by duplication, then rotate and resize the image. Send the delays on the frame one to six to 0.1 s, and on the frame seven, set it to 0.5 s. Click on the convert to Video Timeline button on the bottom left side of the screen. And here you can add an audio track. Click on the little arrow on the right side, and select your file to add sound to your video. Because this audio file is much longer than the video. I had to pull the file to the left until I found a part of the sound that match the video. You can trim the sound by pulling the end to the left and release it at the point where your video ends. If you click again on the convert to frame animation, Adobe Photoshop will delete the soundtrack. You can export your animation in GIF format, but Adobe Photoshop will not keep the soundtrack. Or you can render your video in mp4 format in order to have an animation with sound. To render your animation in mp4 format, go to File, Export random video, then click Render. 16. Alice In Wonderland – Stylizing and Preparing The Image: Upload your photo into tune me, click on the fourth icon from the top on the left side and download Alice in Wonderland cartoon image. The easiest way to erase the watermark from this picture is to copy a part of the left corner and integrate it to the right corner with the rectangular marquee tool. Make a selection on the left bottom corner. Go to the top menu and select Layer, Layer via Copy, go to edit, transform and flip horizontal to create a mirrored image. Move this image in order to cover the watermark. Go to Layer, Layer Mask, reveal all to add the mask to the layer. Make sure the foreground and the background colors on the tube panel is black and white thing the brush tool and paint on the mask by alternating the white and black color until you are satisfied with the results. Select layer from the top menu and flatter image to have only one layer. Duplicate this layer and rename it to layer one. We are going to twitch the rabbits ear. Press W to bring up the selection tool and select the rabbits ear. Then expand the selection with one pixel. Go to Layer, Layer via Copy to create a new layer only with the rabbit's ear. Select, Edit, puppet wrap, and put a few pins at the base of the year to prevent it from moving. Then put a pin towards the middle and the top of the year, pull-down the pin at the tip of the ear and hit Enter. Now we will have to mask the area of the ear on the background, on layer one. To do this, select an area of the mirrors background and create a new layer via copy. This bit in order to cover the portion of the ear that needs to be hidden. Add a layer mask to try to hide it as much as possible. Merge the top layer with the layer that has a mosque and use the clone stamp tool to copy parts of the background if needed. Delete the background layer and rename the top layer, layer two. Now we are going to create a text around the mirror. Draw a path around the mirror with the pen tool. I think the Horizontal Type Text tool, click on the path and write your own slogan. Create another text layer and wrote something like your name, e.g. on the ribbon. 17. Alice In Wonderland – Creating The Animation: Let's start by creating the text animation. Select the layer with the text that is around the mirror, grab the rectangle selection tool and make a selection to cover the text. With the text layer selected hold the Alt key on Windows or Option on Mac, and press the button layer mask to hide the text. Open the timeline and click on the button, convert to Video Timeline. If you are in frame animation mode, make sure the scrubber is at the beginning of the animation. Click on Layer Mask position to add a keyframe. Drag the scrubber to the middle of the animation. Take the Move tool and select the layer mask, press Shift key, and drag the layer mask to the right until you reveal the entire text. If you play the animation, you will see that the text reviews progressively. With the scrubber on the second keyframe, select the layer with the name tags. From here we will create the second part of the animation, grab the rectangle selection tool and make a selection to cover the text with the text layer selected hold the Alt key on Windows or Option on Mac, and press the button layer mask to hide the text. Click on Layer Mask position to add a keyframe. Make sure the texts and the layer mask are not linked. Drag the scrubber to the end of the animation. Take the Move tool and select the layer mask, press the Shift key, and drag the layer mass to the right until you reveal the entire text. You can zoom your timeline from the arrows at the bottom. If you find that your animation is too long or too short, you can adjust it by dragging the end of each layer of your video to the left or to the right. Also pay attention during this process to reposition your keyframes according to the changes you make. You feel more comfortable with the frame animation. Click to convert to frame animation at the bottom left of the timeline, and then click on continue. This video has 46 frames in total. I will switch the rabbits ear on the frame 40.41. So I've hidden layer two on these two frames. Select all the frames and set the delay to 0.1. Export the animation as a GIF. 18. Snowing Effect – Stylizing and Preparing The Image: We will make another easy animation. Then you can set to your loved ones for the winter holidays. Upload your picture to tune me. Click on the folder icon from the top on the left side and download the cartoon image. Open this image in Adobe Photoshop and let's add some texts with red color. Select the two texts layers and drag them down to the plus sign to duplicate them. Change the color on the top two text layers to black. 19. Snowing Effect – Creating The Animation: Open the timeline and choose a frame animation for the first frame, make visible the background layer and the two red text layers add a new frame high the two red texts layers and make visible the black text layers. Set the delays for these two frames to 0.3. You can export your file as it is or continued to add elements to your animation. Now we are going to create the snowfall, add a new layer on the top of the last text layer and click on create new fill or adjustment layer. Then select Solid Color, choose a gray color and click Okay. On the top menu, go to filter, select Noise, Add Noise, and click on Convert to Smart Object. The amount has to be 100 per cent. The distribution is Gaussian and check monochromatic. Then click Okay, go again to Filter Blur, Gaussian Blur, and set the radius to two. Go to Image Adjustment Levels and the Josie arrows according the amount and density of snow that you would like to display on your video. Now choose Filter again, other and offset, and select the values you see on the screen. We have just created a pattern and we are going to save it. So go to Edit, Define Pattern, give it a name and click. Okay. Delete this layer as we don't need it anymore. Create a new layer above the last text layer. Click on, create a new fill or adjustment layer. Select Solid Color and choose black color. Click on Layer Style, choose Pattern, Overlay, and from pattern, select the snow pattern you have just created. From the blend mode select screen and you can play with the opacity mode and scale the snow size. On the layer, drag down the field option to zero. On the timeline, click on Convert to Video Timeline and expand the color fill one layer. Let's add some motion to the snow. Make sure the scrubber is positioned at the beginning of the video. Click on the little circle near style to add a keyframe. Pull the scrubber to the end of the animation, and on the layer panel, double-click on pattern overlay to open the Layer Style. Drag the image down and click Okay, this will create a new keyframe. Depending on how much you will drag this image down, will determine the speed of the snow falling. You can readjust the size of the snowflakes by double-clicking on the layer effects, bear in mind that you will have to do the adjustments on both the keyframes. In the video mode, you can add a sound file and export the animation in mp4 format. I have just exported my animation as a GIF. 20. Final Thoughts: Thank you so much for joining my class.
