1. Welcome to Class!: Hello. My name is Cal. And as a video creator
with experience in professional editing and
digital content production, I found a fast, beginner friendly way to create realistic typewriter
effects that look stunning on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok without
complicated animations. And in this class, I'm going to show you exactly how to make these fancy animated
typewriter effects you see appearing on
the screen right now. The best part is you
can do this quickly and without the monotonous key
framing it would usually take. All you need are Google Docs, Premiere Pro, and the ability
to record your screen. A great typewriter effect can
instantly grab attention, improve storytelling, and make your content stand
out on social media. It makes YouTube
tutorials more engaging. It turns Instagram
and Tik Tok posts into scroll stopping content. It adds a cinematic eye catching
touch to marketing ads. And the best part, you don't need to animate
anything manually. We'll record a natural
typing effect inside Google Docs and
process it inside Premiere Pro to make
it look perfect. In this course, I'll
take you step by step through creating a smooth, natural typing effect
in Google Docs. Recording your screen
for the best quality, removing the background and refining the effect
in Premiere Pro, and adjusting speed and adding
realistic typing sounds. This class is perfect for content creators who want
on screen tutorials, tech explainers, and
story driven videos, marketers and business
owners who want engaging ads that
pop on social media. And filmmakers and editors who want to add cinematic
storytelling elements. No advanced animation
skills required. Even if you've never worked
with motion graphics, this method is easy to learn. So if you've struggled
with animating text, this course will save
you hours while giving you a professional result.
Let's get started.
2. Why this Effect Works: You've probably seen this
effect in several places, YouTube, Instagram,
Tik Tok, and movies. That's because it grabs attention and keeps
people watching. In tutorials, it makes
keypoints stand out. In ads, it stops the scroll
and boosts engagement. And in storytelling, it
adds drama and emotion. So why are we using Google Docs instead of traditional key
framing in Premiere Pro? Well, it's faster. No need to animate each letter
manually. It's natural. The effect looks more authentic and organic than
preset animations, and it's beginner friendly. If you can type in Google Docs, you can create this effect. Most people overcomplicate
this process, but by the end of this class, you'll be able to
create this effect in minutes instead of hours. Now that you know why this
effect is so valuable, let's move on to the next step, setting up Google Docs for
a clean screen recording. This is where the magic starts, so let's jump in.
3. Set Up Google Docs: Before we start recording
our typing effect, we need to set up Google
Docs the right way, and you can do this on your
computer, pad, or phone. A well formatted document ensures smooth text animation
without distractions, better visibility for
Premiere Pro editing, and a cleaner final
effect that works well. I suggest doing this on your
computer because the app on your pad or phone may have some limitations such
as fun style options, but do whatever
works best for you. First, we need to maximize our workspace for a
clean screen recording. So if we move into Google Docs and you
open up the document, you should see something like this. It's a blank template. What I would suggest doing
first is go over to Zoom. This is your Zoom option
and click on fit to screen. Next, if you come over
here to align and indent, you have several options. The default is left justified. So if you start typing, it'll be here on the left. However, for today's
demonstration, I am going to justify
in the middle. And once you've chosen
your justification, either left, middle,
or elsewhere, then adjust the
size of the font. Then let's just
say text animation here. This is quite small. So go ahead and highlight
and decide what size I'm going to go with 36 because it takes up
most of the screen. Not all fonts work well
for the typewriter effect. Here are some of
the best options depending on your style. Monospace fonts like courier Nu, give a classic typewriter look. Sanserafonts, like Montserrat or Roboto modern clean
and easy to read, and textile fonts like
Sher tech mono or Iban flax mono are perfect
for hacker coding effects. Before we move on
to the recording, let's make sure that
what you want to type is positioned the way you
want. Here's an example. Tell me if you recognize
where this comes from. So let's say that we don't
want to use this font. Let's use our hacker
style tech font. I've already got it here. I'm going to use ShioTechmna, and let's make sure that
what we're going to write looks the way we want it when
we put it into our video. So tell me if you
recognize this. Great. Now that your Google
Doc is set up properly, we are ready to record
the typing effect. Let's move on to the next
lesson. See you there.
4. Recording the Typing Effect: Now that we've set
up Google Docs, it's time to record
our typing effect. If you're using a
pad or mobile phone, simply use the built in
screen recording software. I use an iPhone. If you do two, then
swipe down to open the Control Center and
tap the record icon. However, if you don't
see that option, no problem, just do this. First, swipe down to
open the Control Center, then press and hold. This will open the option. Finally, choose
the record button. However, if you're
using an Android, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the
quick settings panel, tap the screen record. Okay. Today, to demonstrate, we'll be using the computer
to scream record. That means you need some type of screen
recording software. If you don't already
have a screen recorder, I suggest using a free and
powerful program called OBS. You can get this
whether you have a Microsoft or Apple computer. Simply go to obsjct.com forwardslash Download and
download the software. Once you've downloaded it,
this is what you'll see. So I'm screen
recording right here, and I've already pushed
the recording button. So I'm using OBS, and this is what you should see. However, it should say start recording before you
actually record. Over here, we have your audio. You don't really need
this for this effect, but if it's on, it's okay. No problem. And we
have your display. If you want to turn audio off, you can just click the
I and it will turn off, but make sure that
your display is on and functioning so the
I should look like this. Before you press record, I suggest go to
settings Go to Output. And down here is the path where your video
file will be saved. I've used or I've set
it to my desktop. Wherever suits you best is fine. Then click Okay. And then
you can start recording. Once you've finished, go ahead and press Stop, and
then there you go. Now it's time to clean up and remove the background
in Premiere Prep. In the next lesson, I'll
show you exactly how to make your text blend seamlessly
into any video. See you there.
5. Cleaning Up and Removing the Background: Now that we have a
recorded typing effect, it's time to clean it
up in Premiere Pro. By the end of this lesson, you'll have a transparent, professional looking
typewriter effect that you can overlay
onto any video. So go ahead and get into Premiere Pro and notice that I already have
two things in here. One is my man on phone clip, which you'll see a
little bit later. I'll just throw it into
our timeline here. It's a ten second clip of a
man texting on his phone. And I have recorded a different text
message which is left justified, and
I've got it right here. So what I would
do here is double click on your screen recording that you have of
your text message. And I don't want to import all
of it because it will have the video on top and potential
audio at the bottom, whether it was recorded or not. Instead, if you double click, come right here and you
can just choose the video. I'll take it and put it on top. Now I've got my text. What I want to do is isolate
from where it begins, say right about here. Cut it, delete the other part, and go to the end
where it stops. I'm not sure was
right about here. And I'll cut it off. Okay. Next, what you want to do is before we place your text, we want to add a few effects. So in order to do that, we'll click on our file
and go to the Effects tab, wherever that is on your screen. And I would like you to
find the invert effect. It's under channel,
not over here, but channel then
invert and drag it on. And let me show you what
the difference was. It did look like this. This is the screen recording
that you had. And then if I throw on Invert, it will take out a lot of these colors so you can
see it clearly on screen. And then let's find it in our effect controls
under Invert. Under here with Invert, if you look at channel, I'd like you to come over here, hit the scroll down menu
and click on Luminans. Okay, so that'll clean
things up a little bit more. Now, we have a few
other effects. The next effect I would like
you to choose is Luma key. You'll find it under
king right here, throw it on, and it cleans
it up even that more. So looking pretty good so far. But notice we have a lot
of stuff on the outside. We have our computer screen, and we want to get rid of that. So we need to crop it. So let's go into another effect, crop CROP. Throw it on there. And if we go into our effect controls and
find crop right here, click on crop itself. If you click on it says
CROP, click on that. Then you'll notice you can grab these areas here
and move them over. So do that on the top
bottom right and left. And then look, we have
our text message. Let's scroll through
it just to double check that it's
all correctly on. Alright? Do I have it all?
Yes, it looks perfect. Now, notice it's just
a little too big. But before we go
there, if you want, depending on what's
on your background, you do have the option of
throwing on drop shadow. So if I click in
one more effect, drop shadow and throw
that one on as well, you can go to Drop Shadow. You can adjust the opacity. Let's say, let's make it. Well, let's make it 100 opacity. And I gave it a distance of 13. So it pops out a
little bit more. Fantastic. Now,
we've got our text. You might want to just
position it a little bit. And before we position it, we can adjust the timing a little bit by
clicking right here. Hold it down and go
to rate stretch tool. Click once here on our clip and pull it down to
meet the same timing. Now, it looks okay, but the timing isn't perfect, nor is the position. Let's position it a
little bit more toward the top left as if he's texting. And you can use the scale to make it
a little bit smaller. Alright. So this looks okay, but we're not done yet. We have a few more
things to do. Awesome. Now you have a
fully transparent, professional looking
typewriter effect that you can overlay
onto any video. Next, we'll adjust
the speed and add sound effects to make the
effect even more immersive. See you in the next video.
6. Adjusting Speed & Adding Sound Effects: Now that we've removed
the background and cleaned up our
typewriter effect, it's time to fine tune the
speed and add sound effects. A well paced effect makes your video
engaging and natural. But if the typing is too slow
or too fast, it feels off. And without sound effects, the effect loses impact. So let's jump into Premiere Pro. So now we're back
into our project, and we have our man on phone ten second video
clip at the bottom, and on top, we have
our text clip. And we have already
adjusted the rate using our rate stretch
tool right here. Once again, you can click
and adjust the rate. However, it doesn't look quite the way we
probably want it. So one thing as we
scroll through here, the placement of the text
compared to the man's face, especially right here, it's
sort of getting in the way. So let's sort of reposition
the video first. So let's click on our video. And what we can do here in our effect controls is
maybe enlarge it slightly. Let's let's go too. Let's try 115%. I'm going to move it
move the position a little bit so I can get his
head more toward the right. It's still in video. So that looks okay, so let's scroll back and forth. Okay. Let's test it out. Let's scroll across
our timeline, and it looks like the positioning is a little bit better,
right? That makes sense. Now, let's assume that you
want to follow a certain rate. For example, in this clip, we scroll all the way over,
we have two sentences. Now, let's say you wanted to have the typing speed
different for each sentence, break it up a little bit. What you can do is go to the part where you
end one sentence and begin the other and just click on that and
cut it in half. What you can do then is
use the rate stretch tool. Let's say you want to
make it a little shorter. You can go up to a
certain point here, move the other clip over, make sure they're together, and you can even adjust
the rate on here as well. That's just a little trick to
maybe match your dialogue. This is what I did in the very first video when you saw me speaking to the camera
with a text on the right. But as far as the timing with
this text and the video, I think it works. The next thing we want to
do is add a sound effect. So if you go into
your resource tab, you should find an MP three
file named keyboard typing. What you can do is grab it, bring it into the
bottom and make sure it matches the timing
of the text effect. Text effect ends about right. About right here. So this is as far
as you want to go. Now, what I suggest, I would not use the stretch tool here to adjust it because
it'll just the sound. Instead, just copy,
come over here and paste and just add it to match the length of
your typing clip. So that's right about here. What I'll do is I'll slice this and get rid
of the right side, and let's take a look. Okay, looks pretty good to me. Just spend a little
time playing with the sound effect to adjust
it the way you want it, and it should work
out perfectly. Fantastic. Now you have a perfectly timed typing
effect with sync sound, making your animation feel
natural and professional. Next, we'll take this one step further and make your first
clip using this effect. Click the next video to
see what we'll be doing.
7. Class Project: Now it's time to put your
new skills into action. For your class project, I've made it super simple. First, check out your
resource tab in this course. There you can download
the provided video clip. It's a ten second scene
of a man texting. The file is titled Man on phone. Second, screen record
your typing effect on your device or computer
using Google Docs. Next, import those files into Premiere Pro and add
your typewriter effect. Be sure to remove
the background from your screen recording
and overlay it on the video of
the man on his phone. Get creative with a text you decide to use
for this project. It could be a casual chat, a funny message, or
anything you like. All you need to do is follow the directions I gave
you in earlier videos. So feel free to
watch again while you're working on this
project. That's it. Great. You can now
successfully create a realistic typewriter effect
that works for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and beyond. Also, thank you for
taking this class. I hope you found it valuable. Alright, time to create
your final project. I can't wait to
see what you make. Take care.
