1. Introduction: guys today. I want to show how displacement can affect typography, usually, how to make a marae texture. And then how to put that into for shop on displace your type around it. Displacement is really fun. It's really simple on. There's so much you can do with it when you understand just how to use it and what it's gonna do to type. So hopefully you can learn a couple of things In this video. Andi, if it's useful, will make some more in future and keep experimenting with different textures. We can make on what that's going to without tie for this first video. We're just gonna look at him, worry, texture and the different possibilities we can make. So that sounds interesting. Let's get started.
2. Creating a moire texture: Okay, guys. So it's good started. You just want to be in illustrator, which could start off by making a background pattern. And you're gonna use that as a displacement map to what sort of modified the type when we get to that stage. So we're gonna make a really busy So why worry? Background pattern and use that as displacement my play wrong. So it's done with. I'll just show you how to make a Kumari background. So actually that you just won't be an illustrator. And you just want to start by making a black square the same size you canvas. So my compass is a three, so you might as well keep it black because to make it a displacement, my place Iran, you have to convert the whole document grayscale, so keep it black from that, I just makes it easier. They just want to go to effect stylized scribble. So there's my custom sense that I've already added, But when you first come onto, it'll probably look something like this. So you've got all these different sands of different stuff that you can sort of have a play with. But for now, we just want to go on the my race on the list one that this just default so you can play around with everything. So the path over lack gives it a cool box. Look, wish if you were to shrink it down, could be really cool. Given a three d effect at the curve venous. This just this sort of thing. These ripples of it was really cool at space. And I used to put this down just by one point pixel. It just brings everything in a little bit, but you can just in more or making a wider. So the variation tends to make it a little bit messy like this. So I usually just keep pounds there stroked with, say, quite surface mine trade. So keep it as is, and again, variation just sort of ruins it. So I'm gonna kill like this, just I have play, and then when you have pages press OK, so this is the first part, and we're just making the base background. We're gonna take this into first shop and take a little bit further in a second to just say this is ah j paygo. So it's whatever you want to say that as and then we're going to push up in the next part
3. Displacing type : okay as welcome back. So I've just put the Mari background that we made in Illustrator into Rocha. That's all this is gonna copy out. So I could make some modifications to it, and I still got a copy that. So obviously, if you seem a bit is before, the first thing we do is I'm gonna go into the distorting wave. I'm not going to go through this again because I've gone through it in literally every video but the waves Just a wave breaking this mari pound of a little bit. So have a go with that. So I want something quite busy because this is going to affect the typography and I'll show you that and a second. So I'm gonna guess Moose run like this. So once you happy with how it looks, next thing you want to do is you want to go into image mode and you want to convert the whole document to gray scale, which means you gotta rest, arise it and flatten everything, which should be fine stuff that you just want to save it as a PST file. And then this is your displacement maps. You just want to call it something like displacement. Okay, so this isn't a three documents you want to make you typography document the exact same size as your displacement map. So I'm gonna go a three. Okay, so for this, but I want to just go back into Australia. I don't wanna write something, and I just want some time just to test this out on. So this is something I just did. Oh, yeah. Yes. So it's just a bit right, and I'm just lying toe appears in that grid method of went over in the last video. So I'm just literally going to copy this rare and paste it into this document. And first up, let's make it a bit bigger. Okay, so that's just the text from illustrating to show the next thing wanted Dio is drag the displacement map from one document. Just put it in San Doctrine, As you type. I'm just gonna put it behind. So what displays and that's gonna do is everywhere that there's, like, a line or something's happening. It's going to affect the type in this way. So you're gonna have the lines coming through and I show you what this means in second I just wanted to put a color of lie on my type. Fast. Make it white. Okay. So to displace the type without displacement maps are you want to do is being attacked, player Go on, filter the store on displace. So the horizontal scale is how much it displaces horizontally and obviously vehicle. So if the vertical was off, all it would do was would bid to displaced that the either side. I just wanted to be equals have put 100 on everything. Ah, if you've got a smaller document, you might want less. It's just trial and error to see what is going to come out like at the moment, they're just OK. And then you just click Select your displacement. Your notice of the J picks and things were all great down is because they're no gray scale . So it was important to convert the displacement map two gray scale, this one. Open that, and then you can say this is all just done something that was really cool. So I'm gonna under I'm gonna do again. But I want to change some settings this time just to see what the difference it makes. We're getting a 50 on half of everything. Yes, sir. You can see a bit more clearly now exactly what it's doing. So if I then took off the background layer made this, what a color. I mean, that looks circle, you know? But I believe it. Why? And I'm gonna tell my background black. I mean, I love it personally, so
4. Taking it further: It's just come back to the initial illustrate documents so you can see because there's so much fine detail in this original design, You can see why this is so crazy. And it looks so, so picks lead. So I want to show you what happens if you make background. That's a little bit thicker. A little bit less details. So I'm just gonna quickly go through the exact same process again. Just make a few changes. I just want to scribble. No, my curvy nous more if it's okay. So this is what I want. I'm just going to say this is Jay Peg. Okay, so I was gonna quickly wave it again. Kids have got certain little bit more like this. A little bit more liquidity. So because this has got less fine detail on a more solid shapes, the types gonna look different. It's going to look less detailed, less sort of grainy. So I'm just gonna convert this to gray scale and save it as for a short while again, Quite displacement to Okay. And then I want to make my a through document again just in my displacement file. If it was a sort of background, and I just want to put that type in again. Copy this. Three pixels. Okay, make it away again. Okay. So, again, you just want to go filter to start displace. I'm gonna get a little bit more. I'm gonna go to 17. 70. Okay, pick your displacement. Okay, the so now it looks like it's gon behind the pattern. And you can really see now exactly what the displacement does. So as cool as that looks, if I now got rid of the background, take off the core of a way. He left with really cool effect. So I want to make the background black background. Put that on. You know, that's really cool. So that's it. With even more, you can see how much difference it makes. Um, those different sentence. This is one. I just did be falling. Just playing with that. I spent a lot more time just getting exactly how one of their but I mean the really similar three fair. So just the last thing I want to show you is that I can then displaced this again, displace it. I could put it on that day, and I could displace it to the really grainy version, the original, and it creates something like that. And it's just experiment and just constantly plan. Yeah, so that's really cool. Really like that. So that's if the tutorials want this to be really quick typography tutorial, and I hope you learned something on. And maybe the next video will be how I use this to create final personal role. How I put together a design using this. So if this was useful, let me know. And thanks for watching.
