I’m Shelley Duke Hopkins I live a simple life filled with music, literature, cooking, painting, parenting, laughing and traveling. Most days you will find me dedicated to art making. Even if it’s not the physical act of creating, it’s searching through antique stores, looking for vintage photos and ephemera. Penmanship itself is a form of art and I give it new life by implementing it in my paintings.

I Studied at Memphis College of Art and have taken several classes at University of Memphis. I have shown in galleries in Nashville, Memphis, Atalanta and Mississippi. My american idol moment was working for Kelly Clarkson who commissioned me to do several custom paintings for her home.

I continue to work as a full time artist, sharing the techniques that I h... See full profile

1. Welcome: welcome. My name is Shelly Duke, and I am a mixed media artist. I have created this course for you. Teoh. Learn from some of the things I have picked up on throughout the years. I'm going to teach you how I incorporate more making and personalized them and how to use found papers in your artwork. I love old papers. I love letters, love, handwriting. I go to different antique stores or flea markets and by old papers and found images and books, and I incorporate them into my own work. I find it very exciting. Teoh put something in that's old and has been touched and written by someone else and incorporating it into something new and putting a modern feel on something that is a bit nostalgic. So join me and let's do this journey together and have a lot of fun and take some time for yourself and dig up some old letters and points and memories. And let's put that into something new 2. Supplies : let me go over some things that I will be using. In this course, I will be using Marge, Pa je the golden fluid. I will be using C. Pia. It's also a golden, and I like it because it's transparent. Both of these or kind of transparent. I will also be using coffee. If you have any instant coffee. That's great. An Exacto knife, scissors, a couple of rubber bands, found papers, stamps, old magazines, letters, tape, some transparency tape. This is just your everyday shipping tape. Works great, I think. And tissue paper clear. Just so. And just some paints them acrylic paints the color palette of your choice. 3. Create pattern on tissue : for our first project, we're going to take our tissue paper and create patterns that we can use in our collage. This is a piece of tissue paper that you would give for up with Flight Lee spray with water . Just a good missed fold in half fold in half again you until you create the square in Mr Corners in place. A rubber band on both ends have this sepia gold golden artist color. It's Ah um, half low, and you can use ink. Or you could use acrylic and water it down and take your paper and dip it on all four corners until there covered and missed it one more time. And this is going to create a pattern similar to the ones that I have done before class. It is similar, I would say, to tie dying if you've ever tired ID and I let my tissue paper said Just a minute. I don't let it dry all the way, but you will just have to play with that and see what works best for you. And they're different bolts that you can make. You could do a triangle fold if you wanted more of a triangle and then you open it up, and each time you do it, it will be different. This is one I had done earlier, and then I had done this one and it created dots, and I'm not real certain about the color will just have to play with it and see what happens. 4. design lines on tissue paper: is your tissue paper some sharpies or pitt pan and black ink. We're gonna create some mark making on this tissue paper, and we're going to begin Golden likely were folding a fan fold again to create this step down. You're just gonna continue with your paid for Fran folds until you get to the end and you can take various size markers and create your lines and then do some smaller marks look and thick marks. And then you can also use your India EQ. So we have various sizes in our mark making, and then when you open your paper at it is going to create. He's beautiful little stripes and patterns, and when we put this on our collage, this will disappear. The ink will remain on our paper, but the tissue paper will disappear. And all you will be able to see is this little tick mark. So it's a great way to create a pattern 5. Transfer demonstration : this project is so much fine. And it is just a great lo project that is E. I think you're just gonna love you're gonna take a photograph. This is my aunt Karen. When she was a child, this was taken in 56 1956. This is my mother in my great grandmother's garden. I love the color of that photograph. And this is my Aunt Karen, and I just I love the way old photographs feel, my love, the memories behind them. And I love that we've all done this. We've all played on our swing sets. We we've all you know, played with the different flowers and petals. So take your photo that you have the your in any photo. Sometimes I even get photos from of flea market found photos that that I love, and I will take them and copy them. I take mine just to Kinko's or my local printing store and have them make a copy. It needs to be a laser coffee. It works better as a laser coffee and you are going to take This is just regular packing tape and this actually comes in different widths. And if you want a wider strip. You can get that. But this is what I have on hand. So this is what we're gonna use now Place that strip across your image, smooth from the middle out. And actually, when you're doing this, don't do like I just did and put it on paper because it will stake. Actually, it's better if you, um have just Ah, you know, something that doesn't stick below you. All right, So here's our our 1st 1 And then here is my mom. You cut it, decides. And don't let the tape don't wrap the tape around the image. You're just gonna cut that off And one more. In a lot of times, the static kind of brings the image will come up to you. They're kind of floats up, and then let me cut this one to size. Okay, So here are your three images, and you are gonna take, um, if you have a bone folder that that works really well, um, just taken end of this, and you're just really just burnishing it down. You're really, uh, you making sure there's no air in between the tape and the image. You just want it all nice and flat and do the same with the other two. A wooden spoon works if you're a printmaker, Burnish. Er works. Sometimes you can see that it has bubbles. Sometimes you really can't. You just have toe go over the whole thing. No, Turn that well. Edge off. You're gonna get a cup of water. I usually get one water. Um, this has been sitting here, so it's not really warm, but you're just gonna dip the whole thing in. Just gonna give it a bath and let it sit. Sit in there. I don't know. 45 seconds a minute. I just want that paper to get good and saturated, and then you're gonna take your image out. Now, this part that's not on the tape, it's just going to rip off. You're not gonna be able to use that to your left with your left with this. And, well, im doing this one. I'm gonna soak that one. And then this is you see, this is where the tape is. The shiny Turn it over right. And in. This is what you're gonna rub off, and you kind of have to get it started. But can you see? Have got it. I've got it started. And the image Look how beautiful the images on there and just continued her gently rub. And when it dries, sometimes you're gonna get a film. And if that happens, it's just the pole. It's just the paper, and you just need to do this part again and get the paper off, and then you can give it one more bath and get some of the paper off. And then look how beautiful you have a transfer. And what is so wonderful about these is that you can put it on top of another image of a white paper and then look, you can see King see words you see right through it. It's transparent. Don't you love that? I love making these. They're so much fun. And they're so easy to dio. And the other thing that I after I've mounted these on my work, is it does have a bit of a sean to it. If the shine doesn't bother you, don't worry about it. It's it's fine. I personally like the shine, um to be doled down a little bit. And to do that, I will take some fine sandpaper and just lightly sand over. Not the paper part. Not not this part. But I was saying, actually this part and look, look how beautiful you say. And then and then Look, you say, I just think that's I just think that's beautiful. And how easy and how easy is that? So now it is your turn. Go find a photograph that you want to transfer and it doesn't have to be a person. It can be. It could be something An object. It can be anything I found note on. Look at this. Can you tell what? Can you see this? It's a trying. So it was an old train and I have done the same. I've made a transfer with the train so it can. It really can be anything. But I just love just the sweetness of the girls. I just love it and it's endless. I mean, you could you could do so many things with this tightening, but be thinking about what what you want to do now, because now we're gonna we're gonna put all of these elements together. We're gonna dio a little Siri's we're gonna do, um, a collage and and paint and create and mixed media piece And think about the story. You know, I'm I'm thinking about these little girls, and I'm thinking about what their what their story is And what What's there? Um, how I'm going to translate that story onto into a painting. And So go get your pain, your photographs, and try this technique and see how you like it. I think you're really gonna enjoy it. I think you're gonna have some great results. 6. Coffee monoprint : Another thing that I do like to do is use vintage our old books that I find or or even new books that you don't want any more or well being thrown out and just tear some of the pages out, going to show you something that I like to dio Oh, with the books. This is just expresso just coffee, and I'm just gonna Sprinkle alone here and spray it with some water. And I love the color of coffee. I love that it almost looks like rust to me and then take another one. And I was. Sometimes I like using just the plain block back page with no no writing. So let's put these two together and still what? And do it one more time. Each time it's gonna it's almost like a mono print. Look at that one, and that beautiful colors are beautiful. It's open this one. So we are. It's like we're mono printing with coffee. That's tried. Don't worry if you're of your page. Like I said, you're gonna rip it anyway, so it doesn't matter, and I just do this until I have pages that don't have water that is standing. You can. It's in those areas. I do like to let some of this draw naturally like this, so it doesn't so. We have different values, you know. But some of the pooling you can use on another sheet there's just a little right here that I'm going to add some water to activate it, and then we'll let those draw. But these this is just another way to alter your paper that you have found and you're creating something new from something old and you're giving it a little dimension. You're given it some texture, so let's let these dry and we'll move on to the next thing. 7. Start Collage with Neutral Background : now for the fun part we're going to put All of our pieces that we have worked on are altered book pages, our, um, mano prints with coffee, and we're going to create our background on our substrate. I am using a 400 Siri's mixed media paper, and it's fairly fairly thick, and it will hold the paper well. And what I do is cover the background for the back of the image and decide where you want it. And I take a credit card and I simply start from the middle and push. Push it out and you decide where you want to place things. You, of course, can overlap. And make sure your edges are good in has glue on them. Just simply smooth, smooth. I'm going, Teoh, finish my background and cover it in neutral colors and then we will come back. Teoh, um, come back, Teoh painting and placing our figures. Well, um um tape transfers 8. Collage Background 2: So let me tell you cunning. My thought process with the some of this has not been laid down. Um, if you look, I've got glue and stuff, all of my hands. So I apologize me Put something on the back of her so you can see her. If you look at this picture, you can see there, she's in a frame right here, a triangle. And that triangle condom mimics this triangle, which is the roof of the house. It's the pitch. It's the corner. It kind of has a similar feel. And that reminds this. Makes me think she's possibly in her backyard. And But I do like to try to do the same shapes in different areas. Also, um, the placement. I'm thinking I'm not 100% but I'm kind of thinking that this red is going to kind of border her in this spot here. Um, actually, probably more more here, Um, a little off center. And then there is the the pitch. Probably probably over here, and we will come most of this down. You know, we will. This work. We're going to go over this with Cem, um, acrylic paint, and I've got to decide. You know, normally my heavy up I tend to go to the right corner. I break mine up into thirds and, uh, I tend Teoh, try toe have like, here's an object that I have here and then I have her this that we originally did that I didn't want to get all and I thought was such a complete failure. But I kept, but I kept the one with it. I didn't even like the color. But now that I have worked with it, I love it. I mean, I really love it. You know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of a tea bag. Um, it's it's the color is great. And don't you love how that if something was underneath that it would still show through. I kind of like the white, you know, just I am loving this color. I'm loving that it looks aged when you put put it on there. So, you know, you just kind of have to go with your happy accidents and then these lines. This was from our tissue paper here. I love that the tissue paper disappears and it really looks like not making I mean, some of this will show what when we're done and some of it won't and some will add and take away. But you know, so far, that's that's just about as far as I'm gonna take it in this stage next. Well, like I said, we're gonna We're going to a lot of great stuff to finish. Finish it out and then we're gonna mount it. But so far I am. I'm pretty happy with where were the direction we're going is great. And this is another. Another little lesson is that was one of my favorite spots. I loved it, but, um, I just I think I'm covering. I'm gonna have to cover some of it up. And I love that mark making to, But I am actually Wouldn't you cover that one up as well? Because that's just how how it goes. Um, I can remember when I was in our college actually went to Memphis College of Art and it's a great school. I had the best teachers and I'm still friends with some of my teachers, and I can remember I had I had a painting and the teacher came over and said, Oh, what's your what's your favorite spot? And I said, Oh, right here. That's it's just my favorite And he said, Okay, well, you know, when I come back Oh, you know, let's make sure you've painted over that And I just thought, what in the world and that But it was a great lesson not to get attached, because if you get attached one spot, you will work everywhere but that. And you just you can't do that. You gotta have a continuous flow. And sometimes what you love gets covered up. And that's just that's just how it ISS. So don't get attached to an area. It's still there to just cover it up some. All right, we will continue on and let this dry, and when we come back, we will. It's process of 9. Painting over collage part one: now, these are pretty much dry and ongoing. Teoh, try to stick with this color palette. I'm gonna use, um, the some titanium white, some, um, light orange, some blue. And this is the blue that I'm using and some and some black. And let's just let's just try Teoh. I'm not some of this back a little bit. And I'll tell you, another friend that you will need is baby wipes. Baby wipes are great. When you put the paint on, you can kind of rub it off and see what's underneath. So get you some baby wipes. If you don't have baby wipes, you can always use some rubbing alcohol. And that that works. That works, too. So we're just gonna kind of scrub it on almost like drop Brush it on. - No , she has a lot of orange and reds, so I'm gonna put some of the blew around her. Maybe it's blue sky. One reason I like to use the orange as well is it makes if you mix it with that blue. It makes a really nice neutral gray that span. Now let's you see, we have lines here. We have lines here that I am going, Teoh, Bring bring, uh and bring down. Maybe circle that. So George incorporate. Now, so far, I am just using acrylic paint, so I I don't have to use a fixative this area, all right, here He said that these lines are kind of in Dane because of course, they're ending because there, that's on a receipt and think I'm gonna bring it's mothers on that. 10. Painting over collage part two: jean you with. All right, - that friendly used just a dry brush technique to e. I don't want that to stick out like, Oh, that's a car. I want you to kind of have toe you're out of have to look for it. Pattern going. And let's extend that pattern off her dress cab, like the will was round. So you have these round marks and you have this round element there. I like that. And OK, one thing I did add, you know, it was this. It was this structure. It was too many straight lines, so I broke it up. And so now I have three circles here, and 123 circles here. And that works that works better. For for me, that that feels that feels better. Um, I don't necessarily have to see Oh, you know all of that. But anyway, that's that's all I have added. And I think this one is done as well, and we will continue to mount and seal. Yeah, 11. Preparing your board : Let's prep our boards now like I was shown you before. This is a board that I ordered from Cheap Joe's, and it's just a would cradle. And this is It's a really good cradle about that, and this is how they come. And what I would like to do is paying decides that's totally up to you if you want to leave this natural. You know I like that, too, for me. I like the sides painted, so I am going to go ahead and paint the sides. I like to run my paint a little on the board, just in case I have some paper that is not all the way to the edge. It is not as noticeable now, the top of the board. I like to put just so on that as well. Or a paint just just something. Even though it does say it's primed. I just I just like to put something on top of it, and I'll tell you why. It's been my experience that it's the glue just absorbs into this boards, and if you have primed it or put a little paint on it it in. Here's to that paint or the or the or you're just so it will here to that and not absorb into the wood puts, um, Jess. Oh, on the top board and I'll be back. 12. Mounting painting on board : - Now , after you have placed your glued painting on your board, you simply turn it face down on a parchment paper and weight it down with a heavy heavy book and let this dry overnight. I have let this dry overnight and it is ready to be trimmed and sailed. What I do is unjust. Turn it over and I put it on a cutting board and simply take Exacto knife and you have to work it pretty pushed pretty hard to get this to cut. But you just trend the bottom off like so and there we have ah completed pace. Besides painted Oliver, details mounted. 13. Varnish: I'm going to be using the satin varnish by liquid. Tex and I start in the middle and do this half first. And I use a real soft brush. And then I go over the other half and she is all finished. We'll do the same with this one. Try not to go over it too many times, or it will you get low Some air bubbles. Nuts? Pretty much it. 14. Wire Hanger on Back: I wanted to finish this class off with how amount and I get three inches on either side a measure and I marked them. And then I used these little islets and I either pre drill or just take a nail and kind of start a little hole, put my island in and twist at the end. It gets hard to turn. So I've learned that you can just simply put a nail and continue turning with the nail, and it will tighten easier than with your fingers. And I like Teoh leave a little bit of room toe hang. Not much, but I don't make that super tie about right there and twist it. I also like to sign my artwork on the back of the panel is are finished project and I just really love them. I think they are. They be a wonderful gift, Teoh someone special, and I think you can have a lot of different options on some of the tools and lessons we've learned, and you could incorporate it into even even other paintings that you might choose to dio. So I hope you enjoy this and I'll think of some other things and I hope to see you soon 15. Thank you :
