1. Welcome to Class!: Hey there, how are you? My name is Andy One, and I'm so happy that you've decided to join me
here for this class. I enjoy working with
alcohol markers, Posca, Mercer, and
colored pencils. And sometimes I haven't like
using Artery and even more, such as acrylic paint and watercolors and doing
something called mixed media. Over the past ten years
of my artists career, I've learned and
gather knowledge on how to draw and paint. And over the past three
years of teaching, I have learned what appeals to my students and how
they learn best. In this class, I want to help build your artistic abilities. Here's what we're going
to learn in this class. In the previous two classes I've shared here on skill share, we learned first how to
draw the butterfly and then how to color in
with Posca markers. In this class we will learn
how to add a background. We will be adding leaves around the butterfly and then
coloring in the background with a blue black wash. And
then toning it down with another black wash so that we can bring the butterfly
to the forefront. And we'll be finishing by adding a stippling effect around the
leaves with Posca markers. There are other brands of acrylic markers and whatever you have at your
disposal is fine, but I will be using
these Posca markers. I will also be using
golden acrylic paint. However, same as
the Posca markers, if you have another
brand at your disposal, that is perfectly fine
concerning the animal design. If you have a drawing of
another animal that you would like to add a background
too, that's great. You don't have to do a
background for a butterfly. I'm doing whatever creature or animal you have.
That's great. I just want to show you how I add a background to my piece. There's a list down
below this video with all the details and full description of
what you might need. I also invite you to please, when you're done
with this class, leave a review and be
sure to share your work here on skill share so that all of us can see and check out. If you have any
questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask
me and I or someone else, I'll be sure to help you out. One final thing is that
I'd like you to feel free to check me
out on Instagram. My page is Andy's attitude
and you can see my work. What I do on a daily
basis to finalize. And before we start
with the class, I encourage you to follow
me here on skill share. It is now time to
start this class. Sharpen your pencil and
let the class begin.
2. Practice Drawing a Leaf: All right, welcome. We will begin by practice
drawing a leaf. And I will explain
it in detail and then we will do them
around our animal. In my case, it will
be a butterfly. I will begin by drawing a
simple line using my posco, It's a bit curved and it's about an inch long,
maybe a bit more. This is going to be the
center of the leaf stem. And what I will do
is draw one half of the leaf and then the other. I will begin by coming down and then look out and back in. We end up getting
this bulge right here and a little
pointing area up here. We want to replicate this
on the left side also. Okay. So you see how
it is symmetrical. In other words, it isn't
the same on both sides. That's okay, because
it's a bit curved. I wanted it to be a bit
higher on this side. Have more personality,
more character. Not be just a paper cut out. Each leaf be the same. I want them to have personality. The second thing I will
do is I will add in the little veins coming off
of the main vein like this. They don't go all the
way to the outside, just part of the way. And I will have some more in there to give it a bit of color. All right, now that
that has dried, I will come in with this light
green and that somewhere. And I'm going to work from the outside of the leaf inward, adding a line similar to how
I did with the dark green. But this time I will work in from the outer
edge of the leaf there. We can see how the
light green intermingles and blends in with the light
green that we just had it. So we get a nice interlocking and blending of the two colors. Okay, now I will step in
with my yellow Posca Mercer. I will come in mainly near
the edge, and add a bit, just to give it a
bit of a highlight, some light color areas. And then to add a bit of shadow, we will use our
extra fine black. And we will come right along
the center where there's a bit of groove
right along here. And also out like this. All right, and I will finish up by adding a little
bit more yell, okay, to the very outer edge. All right, so here we have our, we've added the dark green, light green, the yellow. And then we had a bit
of shadowing with our. Finally, we finished off by adding some more yellow
just to the outer edge. One thing I will
remind you is be sort between all
of these layers. Be short to let the paint dry, allow it a good 10 minutes, five or 10 minutes to dry thoroughly so that
you can then come on top of that
previous layer and add more paint supported
to let it dry.
3. Leaves - First Layer: Okay, so we will start working
all around our butterfly, adding our leaves in. And you can use the model like you saw in the
previous video. You can also use
your own design. If you have another leaf design
that you like, feel free. You can find them on line on
Google and draw from there. But I will use the design
I showed you and on the same step by step adding
the different colors, Green, the light green, the yellow, and
some more yellow. I will have these
leaves be as if they're coming out from
behind our butterfly. And they'll go out maybe
an inch or two around it. All around our butterfly. We will add, and we
don't want to look like just a row of leaves, we want it to look random. And some of the leaves
can also overlap other ones. Let me demonstrate.
4. Leaves - Second Layer: Now that I have my
dark green layer as well as my leaves drawn in, I will now go in with my green Posca and start
adding in a second layer. Remember this time I
will be working from the outside of the leaves and working in
towards the middle, but not all the
way to the middle.
5. Leaves - Third Layer: Okay, now that the light green
has been added and tried, we will go in with our yellow and start going
around the very edge. And we will bring this
yellow in a little bit, but we're not going to cover
the light green all the way. We'll just drag this
yellow in ever so much. You T a.
6. Leaves - Fourth Layer: All right, now that we've
better in those three layers, we'll add a bit of
shadowing using our black. So I will use my extra
fine point clasica black like I did in the example at the very
beginning of this class. I go in the middle of my leaf
and then add some veins, not too many, just like that, to give it a bit of shadow
right in the middle. So I'll do it to another one. I trace the center and I want this black to remain stick where the dark
green already is, right in that center
area of our lake. A few strands of black
can come out like this, but not too many eggs are going to do this
all the way around.
7. Leaves - Fifth Layer: Okay, so we've reached the
final part of our project. For this, we're going to use
some critic paint to tone down these leaves and
make them a bit darker. Because at this point we
could leave them as they are, but they are a bit right. So what we will do is use a
wash. And what the wash is when you take your paint and add some water to it and
make it very watery. Now, you could use
water or you could also use a thinning medium. It's up to you, but I
choose to use water. The paints I will
use are a dark blue, this one being black, golden, and it is a primary can. The second paint we use
is black, Mars black. I will mix these too. I've already mixed
them on my plate. I have a small brush. I've added water, and I
will show you the color. Here we have our paint. We can see it's very
watery and mixed up. I want to remove
some of this paint before I go on my leaves, the one that caused any trips. So you can see how that really
tones down these leaves. I'll add a bit more
paint to my brush. It's mainly clean. Mainly has only water more using
this as a water.
8. Leaves - Sixth Layer: All right, so we've added in the blue layer of
wash over the leaves and that really toned them down and made them go
back, in other words. And made them go
into the background and really brought our
butterfly into the foreground. At this point, we're
going to go in with a light orange posco
Mercer fine tip. And we're going to add a bit of a high light to our leaves, to the left side of them, so it will look like
there's a little bit of a light source coming from
the left side of our scene. So that may demonstrate. So just like that, we're
going to go in with a very little bit of our
Cosco Mercer light orange. And do this to all
of our leaves, but only on the
left side of them. Once we get down
here to this area, remember that our light, if it's coming from the left, it will stay shining on the left side of the
leaves down here. So just to keep this in mind that we kind of
have to rotate in our mind and picture
how the light is coming from the
left of our page.
9. Background - First Layer: Okay, this final step
is very much up to you. But I'm going to use
this remaining bit of blue black paint that I have left over from adding
the wash to my leaves. And I'm going to go in the
surrounding white area around my leaves and add a bit of color in a sputtering
and artistic way. So what I'll do
is I'll just take my brush and start adding
some paint around here. Oooooooh. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Nell's no Nelson. No Nelson. No Nelson. No Nelson. Don't go. So don't go. So I No, you. No, nurse, nurse, nurse, nurse, nurse, nurse. If you notice, I
left a small area around the leaves that's
about an inch or so wide. That's white and light blue. And I have a darker
blue out by the edge. And this brings out our area, our inner focal point
of our father fly as we have this bit of glowing
light area around it. And then we have this area in the outer part versus
all the other back. That's how I decided
to add my paint. If you want to use
other colors or other variations of colors at a spine and you don't
have to do this step, it's really up to you. I did this step because
I really wanted to show you what's possible
with creativity, adding different layers and different colors to the outside. I hope you will also experiment and try
this out for yourself.
10. Background - Second Layer: At this point, you
may be thinking that the background looks
too bright and distracts from the
butterfly and leaves. And that may be true. However, what I will do now
is tone this background down, I will use a wash of black. So what I will do is take my black acrylic paint and mix it with
water, water it down, get a nice wash similar to
what we did with the blue and we covered the leaves and did the first background pass. We will go over and really push this blue black background
pack by darkening it up. It will still be
a bit visible to the black wash as you can see, but it'll be really subdued
and really toned down. We will see these bit
of stripes and lines leading to the butterfly
in this black background. So it's still there, but it's very much back. And the other thing I want
you to do is to leave a nice glow around the edge of the leaves,
a bit of white. And really blend that black
out so that we have a nice glowing edged
the leave border. So we will do this and
allow it to thoroughly dry.
11. Background - Third Layer: In this final segment
we will be using our Posca markers to color
in around the leaves. And I've already
done part of it by coloring in and
adding little dots of blue and white right around this edge where there's a
bit of white already there. And we're going to blend this white edge out
by going over and on top with this blue and white posco marker speckling effect. We only want to go out about an inch or so and have
them gradually fade out. In other words, as
they go further away, they get more and more sparse
until there's none left. For this, I'll be using
two posso mergers, white and blue. Light blue to medium have a bit more rounded thick point And it's really up to use if you use an extra fine point
or the medium tip like this. But I've chosen to use these. I will now draw and add
colors to the rest, beginning with white and
then adding the blue.
