1. Welcome!: The more that we're clear on our personal mission,
vision and values, the more that we can
consciously choose where to direct our tongue
attention and energy. In this class, I'm
going to teach you how to clarify
your personal mission, vision and values,
and how to find an inspirational quote that allows you to live into
those strategic goals. My name is Patrick
Parker and I'm a certified executive
coach and a professional certified while building
a life and career that works for you as a
lifelong complex process. This class is designed
to get you one step closer to the
class project. In the upcoming lessons, I'll share tips on the
following concepts. What it means to clarify your personal mission,
vision and values. Why it matters to have an inspirational quote to backup these mission,
vision and values. I'll help you go on
a scavenger hunt to find your own
inspirational quote, I help you narrow down the
list and you come up with, as a result of that
scavenger hunt. And I hope you apply your chosen
inspirational quote to your life so that you
can be more creative, serve other people, and thrive. By the end of this class, you will walk away
and we're clear on your personal mission,
vision, and values. And you will have an
inspirational quote that will serve as the crest for
your personal brand. On a personal note, I'd like to share with you
that I'm really excited about this class because this exercise changed my life. Seven years ago, I
was completely burned out from traveling around the
world in my first career. By clarifying my mission, vision, and values through
an inspirational quote, I ended up completely changing careers and becoming a
coach, speaker and author. That was a surprise to me as much as it wants
to everyone else. This exercise of finding an inspirational quote that clarifies your mission, vision, and values is one of the most concrete and
tangible outcomes of my work with clients. So why is that? Well, I believe that
most of us take us sort of scattershot helter
Skelter approach to lack. This exercise, on
the other hand, teaches us how to
be sharpshooters. This class is intended for anyone who's willing
to go inside of themselves and reflect
in order to come back out to the external world and create a lab that's more
engaging and authentic. You need for this class
isn't Internet connection. In paper. Hungry fled and a
big old dose of willingness. I'm so happy that you
chose this course. The material that
I'm presenting here, it means a lot to
me and I hope that it also provides value to you. So let's go ahead and
jump in and get started.
2. Class Project: Alright, so now that the
world comes out of the way, let's talk class project. In this class project, you'll be finding your own inspirational quote
that succinctly and powerfully sums up your personal mission,
vision, and values. You can complete your
class project on your own time in the
following easy steps. First of all, download
the class guide, inspirational quotes from
becoming who you truly are. You can find it in the
Class Resources folder. This e-book is an
example of the research I did in my personal
scavenger hunt to find an inspirational
quote that clarified my mission,
vision, and values. You can use this resource
to kickoff your own search. In the next videos, I'll share with
you how to clarify your personal mission,
vision, and values. Once you're really
clear on that, then you can do the research
that we'll talk about in future videos to find an inspirational quote
that aligns with that, will come up with a list
of possible quotes. I'll show you how to
whittle them down. And finally, I'll share with you the four criteria that
you're inspirational quote, needs to have an order to impact you and to impact others. At the end of this
course, if you found an inspirational
quote that really ignites you
and might chew up than we'd love for
you to share it with us. And if you have any questions on the topics covered
in this course, please share those as well. I'll do my best to clarify
any confusion you may have. We can all use the
space together to uplift one another and to inspire one another as
we do this class project. And with that being said, let's jump into the next video where I'm going
to share with you my overview of what I mean by mission,
vision, and values.
3. Clarifying Your Mission, Vision, and Values: Okay, so here we are in
the meat of the course. Before we talk about an inspirational quote
or why it matters, Let's talk about mission,
vision, and values. If you're already familiar
with these ideas, you can watch this video as a refresher or you can
go onto the next video. And if you're not quite sure what I mean by mission,
vision, and values, if it all seems a little vague, Don't worry, I'm about to
take us brief deep dive. So the concept of
mission, vision, and values really started
in corporate strategy. Over the years, leaders of organizations have
gotten together to come up with statements of who they are and
what they're about, and how they serve the world. This strategic messaging is usually broken down
into three parts, mission, vision, and values. So let's see briefly what
each of these terms mean. I'll share the definition, then. I'll share with you Skillshare's mission, vision and values, and then I'll share my own personal mission,
vision and values. First of all, the
mission statement is your overall statement
of purpose for existing. It normally consists of
very tangible objectives, and it's concrete, encompasses the goals and characteristics that you're already achieving. And it lets people know what
you do and why you do it. So let's go to the About page
on Skillshare's website. Skillshare is an online learning community
with thousands of classes for creative
and curious people on topics including
illustration, design, photography, video,
freelancing, and more. So that's all very tangible, It's very concrete, and it's
what they're already doing. They go on to say
that on skillshare, members come together to find inspiration and
take the next step in their creative journey. The first part of that
paragraph is what they do. And the second part is
how and why they do it. My personal mission is actually
my inspirational quote. It's the privilege of a lifetime is to become
who you truly are. It's what I'm already doing in my personal life and
my professional life. I really believed that when
people live authentic, self-actualized lives, that their creativity
and their service to other people just skyrocket. So that's what I do
and why I do it. So that's the mission piece of mission, vision and values. Let's go on to visit the
philosopher Schopenhauer once said that we all have a part in recreating the world. And that's my
personal definition of what a vision statement is. It's how you want
to see the future, is how you wanted to
recreate the world. The mission statement is
very concrete and tangible. The vision is a
little more abstract. It's a little bit more
touchy-feely and nebulous. A vision statement is all about long-term hopes
for the future and the short-term goals that you're taking in order to
get to that future. So let's look at Skillshare's
vision statement. They write that as Skillshare, we've seen again and again how the seemingly simple act of creating can be a
force for growth, change and discovery
and people's lives. We want to inspire and
multiply the kind of creative exploration
that furthers expression, learning
and application. So they're saying
that their long-term hope for the future. A world where people
are more creative, where they're more expressive, where they're more
open to learning and applying the insights
they learn to the world. My vision statement, both
personally and professionally, is to recreate the world in a more authentic and
self-actualized way. Okay, Now let's go to values. Values are the
core principles to help guide you toward
recreating the world. And they help you live into your overall purpose
for existing values. Very loudly. Some people are more analytic, some people are more creative. Some people are more
community focused. Some people are
more self-oriented. Some people are
highly spiritual. Other people really live in the materialistic sort
of quantifiable world. And there are all sorts of gradations in between
those extremes. And there are all sorts
of other yens and Yang's values are
neither right nor wrong, but they're about
what fits for you, what makes sense
for you based on your biology and how you
popped out of the womb, and also the community and
culture in which you grew up. So let's look at Skillshare's values at the
end of their about page. Skillshare has three
categories of values. They have member
values that teacher values, and employee values. They want their members
to get inspired to learn new skills
and make discoveries. So the three values,
inspiration, learning and discovery, right? That they want to empower their teachers to
share their expertise, earning money, and get back. The two items behind
those three bullet points are financial
well-being and service. Finally, Skillshare wants to empower their employees
to be curious, to make an impact and
to live a full life. So curiosity, impact
and an authentic life. My personal and
professional values or wisdom, peace and freedom. I believe that those
three elements, wisdom, peace, and freedom, are the three requirements that one must have to
find creativity, to find authentic living, and to really serve others in a way that is most powerful. So before you go on to finding
your inspirational quote, Take a few moments to clarify your personal mission,
vision, and values. It helps to write them
down on a piece of paper. And as you do this, it's important to really
listen closely to yourself and to be
honest with yourself, your mission, vision
and values are yours. It doesn't matter what other
people think about it. So take a few minutes to
clarify your personal mission, vision, and values, and I'll
see you in the next video.
4. The Value of an Inspirational Quote: Alright, so far we've talked about the first half
of the class title, clarifying your mission,
vision, and values. Now, let's talk about
the second half and inspirational quote. So before we go any further, let me just tell you why. I think finding an
inspirational quote that resonates
with your mission, vision, and values even
matters in the first place. First of all, an
inspirational quote can really help
you feel connected to the inspirational figure that you took the
quote from e.g. when I think about you, I think about an
intuitive, creative, introverted person who had a
very deep inner landscape. But he also found
a way to live in reality and make it deep
impact on the world. And it's so hard for people with his personality style
to do what he did, to go out and be
concrete and end, create tangible
good for the world. So when I think of that
line from Carl Jung, I'm thinking about him, about his essence, his spirit, and sort of what app or
jagged onto that name. Perhaps the most
immediately helpful result of creating inspirational quote that aligns with your
mission, vision, and values is that you
can very succinctly and powerfully articulate who you are and what you're
about to others. Your inspirational
quote can really clarify a difficult situation. So if you have two
or more options in life and there's no
right or wrong answer. And most of the time there's
not a right or wrong answer. It's just life and
inspirational quote can really help you figure out
what the next right indicated thing to do. E.g. when I come
to a crossroads in my life and I'm not sure
which way to proceed. I think about that the
privilege of a lifetime is to become truly are so few
people ever get there. So when I'm not sure about
what to do next in my life, I just think about
that quote and I think about what's
going to get me there? What's going to really lock
in a sense of security, a sense of my basic
needs being met, that sense of community
and Career well-being. So that can reside on the highest level of
self-actualization. And then all of a sudden, it's very clear what
I'm supposed to do. Finally, inspirational
quotes are just that. They're inspiring. I hope I've convinced
you of the power of finding your own
inspirational quote. And I'll see you
in the next video.
5. Research Your Inspirational Quote: Alright, so far in this
course we've talked about clarifying your
mission, vision and values. And we've talked
about the reasons why it helps to have an
inspirational quote. Now, we're going to go on a scavenger hunt to find
that inspirational quote. So the first step in
your class project is to begin researching possible
inspirational quotes. There are several
ways to do this. First of all, you can search for keywords that your mission, vision, and values contain. E.g. if I were looking for an inspirational quote
from my personal mission, vision, and values, then I would search for
the following words. Authenticity, piece,
wisdom, freedom. Second, you can think of
influential figures from your personal life or from
history that inspire you, that you consider
to be heroes, e.g. when I was looking for my own inspirational quote
Many years ago, I searched for quotes
by the Wright brothers, costume and Friedrich Nazi. All three of those figures had a very strong sense of who they were as a result of
internal reflection. If you have absolutely
nowhere to start, then you can always just do a Google search or popular
inspirational quotes. Or you can ask family
and friends for ideas. This process might take
you as little as an hour, or you might want to spend several days or
even a week on it. You wanted to cast a wide
net of possibilities, but you also want to strike
while the iron is hot. So don't procrastinate too long and get stuck
in this stage. There's no such thing as
perfection in this process. And the goal is for us to get to the next video where
we whittled down our list to maybe five or ten potential
inspirational quotes. So, have fun with
this scavenger hunt, and I'll see you
in the next video.
6. Select Your Inspirational Quote: By now you should have a list of possible
inspirational quotes. And this video serves as a template for how to
whittle down those quotes. And over the next
couple of days, or ideally a week, I'd like you to carry them
in your pocket, so to speak. See which one tends
to emerge as the most relevant and applicable to your life as you go
about your week, you might find that
some of your quotes are simply too long. Some are not quite big enough. Envision where some are
just a few degrees off base maybe to show you how
to go through this process. I'll share with you
how I went through the process of narrowing
down my own list. John Nash was diagnosed with schizophrenia kind
of late in life. And here's why he had to say
about his neuro divergence. I can see there's
connection between not following normal thinking
and doing creative thinking. I would not have had good scientific ideas If
I thought more normally. Okay, so I love this quote, but it did not make the
shortlist for two reasons. First of all, I'm
not a scientist, and second of all, is too long. The second quote on
my list was bad. The New York Times bestselling
author Gretchen Rubin, she once wrote that the days are long but the years are short. Now, this thing is very
pithy and it's very short. But it didn't make the list
because Gretchen Rubin is just a little bit to moderate
and current for my tastes. I really wanted my inspirational
quote to come from a classic figure to
have that sort of Ravi toss of tradition
and history behind it. So let's go to the third
quote by Ray Bradbury, the author of Fahrenheit 451, in his memoir about his writing process,
Ray Bradbury row, that creativity is plunging forward where Angel
asleep, no desperate. I love this quote and it really resonates with
me in many ways. But it didn't make my
final cut because I didn't think that it would be immediately obvious
to other people. Next, we have a quote by the great mindfulness
teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn. He writes, this journey
is uniquely yours. No one else's. So the path has to be your own. You cannot imitate
somebody else's journey and still be true to yourself. Are you prepared to honor
your uniqueness in this way? So this quote is totally in
line with self-actualization and becoming who you truly are even ends with a
powerful question, but it's too long. I still haven't
memorized this quote and I've known about
it for several years. I still have to look it
up when I think about it. Next, we have a quote
by John Bradshaw, who was a major figure in the self-help movement
in the '80s and '90s. He wrote that ****,
in my opinion, is never finding
your true self and never living your own life
or knowing who you are. I like this quote,
but it's sort of a negative version is the n type version
of what I'm about. It didn't make the cut. Next, we have a quote
by Walt Disney. It's kinda fun to
do the impossible. This quote is very uplifting
and it's very joyful. It means something to me, but it doesn't immediately mean something to other people
when I share it with them. The Chesterton quote
is very pithy, but it's also a
little sarcastic. And I don't know that I want my inspirational quote to come off as a service to others. I love this quote by Freud, love and work are the
cornerstones of our humanness. Quote by Linda Hannah's great. But of course, ultimately
I ended up with the privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are. I call you. I can't exactly tell you why
it rose to the top except that I simply play with these different
quotes for awhile. I kinda carried them in my
pocket as I said earlier. And this is the one that
rose to the top, I trusted. The same thing will
be true for you, that if you try applying and reflecting
on these quotes as you go about your work and your home life for the
next days or weeks, that eventually one
will rise to the top. And that one that
rises to the top is exactly what the
next video is about.
7. Evaluate Your Inspirational Quote: By now, you should have a very clear idea of what
your personal mission, vision, and values are. And you should have an
inspirational quote that clarifies that both to
yourself and other people. By now you've
probably played with this one inspirational quote
that it's risen to the top, both in your internal world
and your external world. Here are my personal criteria
for knowing if this is an inspirational
quote that's probably going to stick and give you
a lot of mileage or not. First of all, it should
be inspirational. Second of all, it
should hold you accountable to your mission,
vision, and values. Third of all, it should be
practical and helping make decisions on a daily
basis and forth of all, it should clarify who you
are and what you're about, both to yourself and to others. So if your inspirational quote
hits those four metrics, then congratulations, and I'll
see you in the next video. And if they don't quite
hit those metrics, then consider continuing to play with the ideas in this course. And eventually, I'll see
you in the next video.
8. Congratulations! : Congratulations, you have made it through
the steps of finding an inspirational quote that stands for who you are
and what you're about. In time, you might find an
inspirational quote that's even more relevant to your
mission, vision, and values. But for today, you have something powerful
and concrete to work. As I mentioned at the
start of this course, creating a life and career
that is truly unique and authentic to you is a
complex, lifelong process. This course aims to give you one tiny piece and that
overall jigsaw puzzle, finding an
inspirational quote is just one tiny gym in the overall crown
that you're making. So if you want a
few more gyms and your crown and a few more
pieces to your jigsaw puzzle. Then follow me as a
course instructor and you'll be notified when I upload more courses
in the future. I wanted to in this
class by giving you a very big thank you. I consider it an honor that
you shared your time with me, and I hope our friendship
continues into the future.
