Hello, I'm Fanny, an Illustrator from France! I've got an illustrator for comics certificate and I'm currently working as a freelance artist. I've been working with ink, watercolors, and gouache in a comic / manga style during my first years of my art journey, and I've been evolving towards a semi realistic style with digital art ever since. Skillshare is for me an opportunity to teach you everything I learned along the way, in a way I would have liked to learn myself, to smooth out your own art journey and speed up your learning curve.

1. Introduction: Other people give up the IDE to run how to draw because they think they have no talent or the art classes are too complicated for them. The classical method to learn how to draw is to first learn realism by copying what we see in the real-world. Only then when really they're misunderstood, we can on how to stylize our drawings. I think that if that approach can be great for a lot of people, it can also discourage rather this. First because realism is very long and complex to them, but also because it doesn't match everyone's grieving. Hi everyone. I'm painting in Russia. I spend my three first years of studies in different schools and I have a certificate as a nice tradeoff organics. After break into weighing up three more years, I have started to do again to sleep for four years now. My answer this way, although lot focused on doing learning and I've never been a natural genius. When I started again on my journey, I was far from having great wearing sleeves. But what has always motivated me was to be able to express on paper everything that I have in mind without waiting for years to be trained enough to paint everything realistically. When starting over, I made myself begin with a very simplistic drawing style and complexified it little by little as a community knowledge to go towards the summit realistic style that I practiced today. This made me able to have a functional style through my learning journey and made me able without frustration. This course is the very first of a series of courses that aims to teach you the basics of drawing and make your skills the book this way. Plenty that you first learned to do everything that you could possibly want to draw, meaning characters on the course. But first in a very simple way, then you will learn to complexify your style. Denote by little, the goalie that you can do. Everything that you have in mind no matter whatever. This first class will be focused on drawing the face on overall head. It's coli that you can already do a different characters in different situations and that you can make them express themselves. Now if you're ready, let's begin. 2. Class project: During this course, we'll go through a series of fundamental principle and tips to start your journey on your project for this class will be to put your new knowledge into practice with exercises at the end of each class. The principle that will cover the following. The simplified proportion of the head and the face, the head in different angles, how to draw hair and facial expressions of emotions. Each lesson will cover only one specific subject. Like this, the course will be easier to approach. You'll be able to take a break and come back when you want. You can also find guides to download in the resources section. So you'll have all the necessary information now by when you practice. Also that I thought of discourse is head drawing made easy? Not a more accurate title would be Hadrian made easier? Because nothing in drawing is never truly easy. So don't be discouraged if you struggled. It's very normal. Learning how to draw is more like a marathon than a speed race. The key to keep added to time is to get the maximum of pleasure from it. It's not more important than learning with the right method. That's why I have created this course, is because I see a lot of people who can't follow along with more conventional methods have the need to put twice the way on paper, but they have in mind. And you also need to know that with a method that fits you, practice and perseverance, everyone can know. It's not a matter of innate talent. Now if you're ready, I wish you a happy person. 3. Tools You'll Need: In this lesson, we'll see what tools you will need. As you're just beginning. We will reduce the tools to the strict minimum. Actually some printing paper, a pencil, and an eraser, I will that you need. Now if you want a bit more comfort, I have a few suggestions to make. I tend to prefer mechanical pencils to regular pencils because we don't have to worry about the size of the lead. For line out, it's more convenient. A pencil eraser is a willingness to evade the small details. You can find them in our stores or on Amazon. If you don't like the texture of printing paper, you can answer by your sketchbook where you keep all your drawings at the same place. The only thing that I recommend is that you don't spend a fortune on it. You will need a lot of paper to train on your first drawing is wouldn't be the best. However, just an invoice here. Don't do like I didn't throw everything away. Even if you ate them. You'll be happy to be able to evaluate your progress with time. You can also get a reclining drawing board. Your hand would be freer to draw on your back. We thank you. If you have a graphic tablet or an iPad Pro and enjoying a software, you can use them. But you need to know that digital art is the hardest impeded in itself. So you should don't already know how to use it. It will be better to start off with traditional tools so as not to complicate your task. To sign up, you will need a pencil, cheap white paper, and then the laser, the red is epsilon donor. Gather the tools of your choosing and eventually make a shopping list for later doing it. The next lesson, we will talk about the structure of the head and his proportions from a form of you. I will teach you to draw from nothing. But despite that having a muy nearby or your phone on front or gamma one would be a great hub for better understanding of the anatomy. See you in the next video. 4. Simplified Proportions of the Head and the Face: In this lesson, we will see the proportions of the head and the face in a simplified way. The method of unused to learn the progression of the head is the Loomis method, which gives very detailed instruction about its structure. Many people will find the Loomis method very useful if you're interested in learning more about it. I highly encourage you to check it in. However, I let that beginners find it too complicated to apprehend me because of the density of information. This is why in this course I want you to teach with a much simpler approach, which is actually close to the way that I taught myself because it looks a lot more accessible when I started. This approach consists in learning only a minimum of information about the structure on the proportions. So again, draw a simple, stylized or nice-looking heads. These proportions will be relevant for any drawing side, which means that once you wrap your head around it well, you will be able to enrich your knowledge and complexify your style at your own view them without having to update those fundamentals. Then one thing that can help, we mentioned in the last lesson is to work in front of moire. Now at the very start of your journey, you're very likely to be unable to interpret the 3D reality, to translate it into a 2D sheet of paper. They think it's a good idea to get familiar with reality observation. But from the start anyway, again, you always more verification that you can already do on your own. So you can get generally familiar with it. As far as the viewer, whether you like the most is to use a makeup mirror because it allows me to see more angles and it doesn't take up too much space. If you don't have a mirror, as I said before, you can use the front alchemy. Well, if your phone, it's even more convenient that you can take a picture of your face at the younger of your choice. Don't worry. The goal is not to make your prettier selfie metal have a reference photo to understand reality better. Okay, now that this instead, we can start studying. First, let's take your head mindful instance, and let's try to analyze its structure. The first thing that you can notice that the top part of the head is relative Rwanda. Not completely though. We've had an iterator on the sides. Then you can try to cross at the center, left and right, of course with asymmetric card. But what we can highlight here is that I wrote in the middle on the horizontal axis, the lower part of the face can be simplified into two equal ax plus the chin that you need to round up as for measuring the placement of the eyes. Just remember that there is an edge between the two eyes. Concerning the worst, the inner paths begin until level of the inner corner of the eye. And that being diagonal relatively to the outer corner of the eyes. The ears begin at the end in the middle of the jaw. The tip of the nose is a little lower than the middle of the face and the head. Just a precision here. We measure the face puncture wounds of the hair to the chin. However, when we talk about the overall head proportions, he's from the chin to the top of this corn. From this angle, you'll see that the part in between the words of the hair on the top of this quarter are taking only a small part of a tree can see are the head. So to come back to the proportions, the mouth is between one-third and two-third between the nose and the mouth. Okay, now you might wonder how to put this into practice on a blank sheet of paper. It's really as simple as repeating the same steps. But without the picture here, the first step in your learning process will be to assimilate the proportions when we simplify that face vitro to the maximum, to focus our energy on one thing at a time. We will see how to complexify that stay in future courses so far. Now, let's define some basic visual vocabulary. This is nine. This is the nose. This is a mouth and ear. And enable easy, isn't it? We can already go very far with other elements. So to draw the head from nothing, We start by drawing a circle. Rather, beginners are desperate because they can't work perfect circle freehand. But don't worry about that. It's just a guide. You can induce puberty it and adjust it afterwards with your eraser. If it's easier for you, then midway across, don't forget to flatten your C code on the sides. Measure with your index finger and then the distance between the top of the head and the eyes line. And refer it to determine whether chins steps, drawers to color icon inside to represent the jaw line. And chin. Help yourself with the center line to make your lines geometric corner of the eyes are here in the middle line. And remember to measure the space between them. There is a in-between the eyes. Then we played the eye works. So we measure, we start from the inner corner of the eye. Then we measure the diagonal. Then we play the years. We start from the liver. We stop at the end of the jaw. Try to be as symmetric code as you can or not agitate to correct your sketch when you see a mistake, just be warned. You will struggle with symmetry at the beginning. But it's perfectly normal and every artist has been there at some point. If you're trying to do it free hand again and again to get the overtime. So the tip of the nose is over here. The mouth is at one-third, two-thirds between the tip of the nose and the chin. You can make your character smile like I did here. But I will collect him and give him a neutral expression afterward. Once you've placed your proportions, It's always good to verify if your measurements are correct and to adjust your sketch, eventually, Just a tip in case you're not sure about the placement of your nose? The middle of the nose with me at the dead center of the face. When you're happy with your drawing, you can erase your construction lights. Okay, congratulations. You draw your first head from a form. You, you may feel overwhelmed with the overload of information, but don't worry, we don't need a bit of practice. Let's simulate everything. Although what you need to remember to start off your drawing is to begin by tracing a circle, then across, and then place the other element we actively or to the proportions. You can download the guide available to help you. I recommend that you print it and keep it nearby when you drop until we remember everything. Now it's your turn. Before heading towards the next lesson. Two or three or four heads by following the steps mentioned in the lessons. And at the same time, change those proportions on your own head in them you are, this might look like to you that you will see that you won't need that much training to make meaningful progress and you'll save time, the total input, the future. During the next lesson, we'll see how to draw the head under different angles. You'd only need a new sheet of paper and you'll use tools. See you in the next lesson. 5. The Head in Different Angles: Now that we covered the basic proportion of the head from the front view, Let's see what it looks like from different angles. Do you remember that circle we do doing the first lesson. Now let's say the circle is not a 2D shape with a 3D sphere likeable. This one is a very convenient object that would serve us as a guide for the base of the head. That if you've got bad, would be that the different elements of the face onto the same depending on what angle you look at them from. For this reason, I recommend that at first you only draw the angle that filter easiest to you and to move towards more complex ones once you more at ease. So to start off, we'll see as examples what happens when we draw the head with a three-quarter view, profile view on the top and bottom views. This will give you an idea of what you should look at on a reference image. So first let's see what happens with a three-quarter view. First of all, was to be like this. And the three-line that come across age we presented Center. You can check on the photo where on how the sphere is located. If you remember the last lesson, the eyes where that lingered on the bottom of the sphere. If you need one more guideline, the middle of the sphere. Here, we presented the Heberlein laying before we need to determine where the center of the feces that is in the continuation of the middle of the sphere. So now we have a guideline for the middle of the anterior head. Remember the tender stage of this corner. Trace a circle on the side which determines what part would be the flat on the quiz that is flat this time and not curved. That will be useful for placing the year. Don't hesitate to correct your drawing when you see mistakes. Now we can begin to draw the face. Try to understand which elements you have to take from the reference photo. The goal here is not that you understand all the complex structure of each element of the face, but that you understand the overall flow and the placement of the key elements. Here you can see that the ICER gets from the curve inwards just underneath the eyebrow. To simplify the shape at first, we can draw that bad like an S shape like this. The outward curve representing the cheek and going towards the chin. Then run the chin after that, the job begins from the year. Link the chin to the job with the line curved outwards. Look at how the shape of the ice changes. The girl that are the closest to us look elongated while you do that are the furthest seem to be shortened. The same thing for the eyeballs and antibody. They are projected forward due to the fact that they add fonts on the forehead while the eyes are back in the eye sockets, the tip of the nose is projected forward. The mouth has the same behavior as the curve that is the closest to us seems longer and the one that is furthest seem shorter. This is due to the perspective effect, the pseudoscience that consists in spotting the key element that we just did. The one that will make you able to understand how to draw a face from any angle no matter how much stylized always stick you are studies that will help you grasp the concept a bit better. Let's see a few more examples. So let's jump into the second example, which is a profile view. In our reference picture. Distantly man is at 100 per cent in a profile view. Otherwise we wouldn't see the beginning of the eyeball here and not the other sheets put it in here. But for this class we will simplify and pretend that he is completely from a profile view. So to make it simple, what it would change it, That's how vision was strictly stopped at everything that is on the right side of the face. So in the left eye bone eyelashes here the building of our sketch-based will be rather close from the front view, indeed in perfect profile and everything would be flat. We won't see the center line. Just so you can understand, in reality on this picture, the model, slightly his head like this. But the difference is subtle enough so we can ignore these for this class. So the center line of the phase follows the shape of this recording. The show starts from the year and joined the chin. Then the topography of the face is quite complex. So you need to understand what's happening on an anatomic level. There's a GP in the junction between the forehead and the nose. Then the node is projected forward. The eye, however, is located deeper in the eye socket. The shape of the eye, so get won't be visible here. But it allows us to estimate the basement of the eye deeper than the bowing of the nose. Further bottom of the face. We can simplify this way. Measure the place of the tip of the nose properly to get a proper form. If you observed when you've seen that no line of the face he is ever completely straight, but always more or less skirt. It's the same thing for the whole human body. The placement of the neck depends on the direction and the tilt of the head. So you'd have to check it from your reference picture and yummy OR now to wrap it up, we'll quickly see two more examples that other bird's eye view, on the bottom view, those angles are more difficult, so I recommend that you get familiar with the rest first before trying them out. Let's compare those two views side-by-side. What we can notice compared to the views at eye level is the eccentricity, the effect that the perspective will give to the face. Either appearance, everything that is closest to us will seem bigger. And what is further, we'll look thinner. The feces feature will also look like this equation saves together as I get further from the viewer. The bigger the angle, the more accentuated the distortion will be. To draw those points of view. It's the same process as before. It was fear on algorithms to measure our proportions. It's more complicated because they will be disrupted because of the perspective. So to get a convincing results, you will need to refer to a model, especially if you are a beginner. I know that live model can be a lot harder to read and drawings at the beginning, I've uploaded a file with some of my old in drawings that you can use to help yourself to draw the head in different postures. And here it is, you know, everything that you need to start drawing head in different angles to send me that. The main thing to remember is to use that sphere is guys to build a good basic structure and to measure your proportions from here. Then use a reference model to see how our perception of the faces features changes depending on the point of view. By simply analyzing the overall movement of each shape. Now it's your turn. Your head from a three-quarter view. On one, from a profile view. The face is very difficult to apprehend. So don't get discouraged. If you don't succeed right away. With practice, it will come then. But your sketches, if you want to get feedback, don't hesitate to ask questions in the command section. I'd be happy to answer. In the next lesson, we will learn how to draw hair. To do so, we will need the sketches you already did so we can finish your characters. See you in the next video. 6. The Hair How to Place and Represent It: In this lesson, we will see how to play. Some represent the hair. As beginners, it wouldn't be normal that you feel completely Atlas when it comes to doing hair. It's a complexity man that can take multiple shapes. The goal of this class will be to give you a simple solutions of representation to build some basic knowledge. So you can find inspiration for different types and styles by yourself right away, of course, at those basics Herman, to be enriched in the future so you can draw it the more interesting style once you've improved. Okay, Now we can take your head sketches from the last lesson, as well as a new sheet of paper to try and be heard weighing on your sketches if you prefer. First, let's talk about her basement. Let's start by studying the old line up the hood of the hair. No matter their hairstyle, I'll type that you want to drop. You need to keep its basement in mind. It's outline is wide open so they will come from and we indicate the structure of the hair if and when it's not visible. From the front view, you can see that the outline of the word follow the forehead, goes around the temples and moved on was before the year. On the side. It comes from the top of the forehead. For those it's outlined in a circle arc, goes down along the tampers and goes behind the year. Look at how the perspective applies in the forehead in three-quarter view, the path closer to us seems longer and the furthest path seems a shortened. The back we can see the shape that the line texts around the year then goes down following the roundness of the head and stepped on the neck area. Then you need to see in which direction the hair flows. For long hair, straight, wavy, or curly. The flowing down to go down in different directions depending on how their habits for short and frizzy hair, or depending on how their hair is styled or texture. The difference is that the part of the hair will tend to go up. There are exceptions, of course. Once again, the best is to have a reference photo to help. The last thing to figure out the overall shape of the hair. One thing to keep in mind is that we will never draw completely straight lines. The hair always have some movements. Day the length into consideration obviously, but also the volume and texture, as well as their states particularities of those elements will determine how you represent it. Okay, now let's talk about practical solutions to do hair. Let's start with long straight hair. Let's say that they have flow is simply falling down without complication. In that case, the only visible part of the world would be here. So we draw our first line here, give some light movement to your line to make it more dynamic. Then we'll separate the hair into different strands. Just a few wants to keep it simple. We'll start the second line of this trend from the year because the Harrington's to support naturally a one here. So same thing. Give it some love men to join the first-line. Then let's go to this train on the other side of the face. Here again, don't forget to apply perspective when needed. This space, there's a little type we won't carry on with this line like this, but will signify the thickness of the hair like this. This trend goes down towards the bottom of the face like this. Here we will make the rest of the hair go behind over the shoulder, then make your hair go around this call to add the thickness of the hair to the base structure of the head. In the front, we end our hair by drawing the last trend. Okay, now for the alternatives, if you wanted the bank, you'll just have to do it like this. This trends come from the middle of the cranium and spread over the forehead. If you want curly hair, you can represent them with water waves like this. The principle of the overall structure is the same. Also, don't expect to get an harmonious result from the first try. To get a satisfying design, you will need to experiment with shapes. Let's see a second example and short hair. Here we will draw the overall outline of the root of the hair. Because if the hair short enough and all its surface, it will be visible everywhere. Then you'll just have to outline the volume of the hair. We can then make a few strands, for instance, all edited. It is depending on their style. Here again, not how the day-to-day experiment. One last example. If you want crazy hair, you'll just have to make very tight waves like this. You'll see with only a little basic knowledge, you already have a lot of possibilities to help you play the hair properly, depending on the angle of vision of the head, you can download the guide actual disposal. With that said, best inspirations was for creating your own composition would be with friends photos. To sum it up, the first thing you need to keep in line either shape of the outline of the Howard's to get a better understanding of the searcher. Then to draw a specific karyotype study. It's about shape and texture. Now it's your turn. Take your head sketches and draw two or three different hairstyles on top, you can share your drawings as well if you want some feedback. During next lesson, we will see how do we present the emotions. You will only need a new sheet of paper. Because you will notice again, everything that you've learned since the beginning to draw your characters with different expressions. See you in the next lesson. 7. Emotions and Facial Expressions: In this lesson, you are going to see how do we present emotions. It's the last lesson of this course, so keep going. You're doing very well. He took on me leave to the thing that facial expression unnecessarily a very complicated to represent. Latinas simplify style. It's really not the case. You will see that with only a very small nuances him very simple lines to draw. You'll be able to represent a lot of different emotions. I had other thing that we are going to see during this lesson, we probably feel very familiar to you. You probably already scribble those elements naturally. Because usually when children can reproduce those codes intuitively, you will see that without learning a lot more about this topic. Another way to be able to evolve your drawing style a lot without studying emotions further. So instead of taking this class as a big study, take it as a basic lexicon to explore. And keep in mind that you'd have to apply the proportion and perspective to this thing that I already natural to you. However, we might not have all acquired the same notions naturally. So if you wish Not every day to draw at the same time as I do to wrap your mind around those concepts. Now with that said, let's dive into it. First. Let's explore the potential of the neighbors. The neighbors are probably the picture that we realize we expect the more different expressions. In my opinion, at least the other features will be able to follow along. But in my opinion, is the eyeballs that have the more potential. Let's begin with a neutral expression. Look how easy it is to quantify expression. If we simply grab the eyeballs iPod, the character looks surprised coming from here. If we go one of the neighbors in what the character looks in tweaked. Both eyeballs are curved in what? The character looks sad. Now if we bend both eyeballs towards disorder, this way, the character looks hungry. You see how magical smooth changes modify the facial expression. And yet we only play the one with the eyeballs. Now let's add the eyes. If the airways don't touch the eyelid, we get a sort of shocked expression. For closed eyelids. If we kept the lines downwards, we get to rest toward expression. If we gave them, a pod, will be able to express joy, our Laughter, awesome contortion. Just a short equation. If you draw straight lines on the eyes and the mouth, you'll get that blessing expression that we mainly seen mangoes. But as far as I know, is not a code using other generals. Finally, the last element is, of course the mouth. Of course, align like this will make the character smile. What we can notice is that we can regulate the expression intensity by playing around with the width of the mouth lying. They say small smile and a frantic, a big smile on convey the same atmosphere. Also what we can precise compared to a child's throwing. Look at how my curves day, whether light, when I modify my expressions. If I exert due date, it will get a character to an effect, which can be a choice by the way. Then if we slightly open the mouth like this, we can leave something like a surprise expression. You can also draw a big 0 shape to make your character young. Well, of course here it looks a bit weird because we should also modifies highs and neighbors. However, if you want to make him scream, you'll need to stretch the corner of his mouth like this. Just a little precision here. When the mouth is wide open, the face elongates on the chin goes down. But for now you can ignore this because the modification needs whether how to apprehend. They tried to remember it for the day. You want to complexify your style. We've been through all the most important modifications. After that, of course, you will have to add the expression of the different features to get the facial expression you want. Now you need to know that until now, I've exaggerated each curve to make the principal clearer. But most of our expressions as adult on our face often doesn't change that much when we interact with each other. We have the ability to read people subtle expressions that don't show up that much on our faces. And it's important to translate this aspect in our drawings as well. It can sound a bit complicated, but really it's not that much to express that two expressions. Instead of exaggerating the curves that I did, just go over your lines slightly. To sum it up, we can say that the more exaggerated the modification, the stronger their emotion is. Let's take an example. If I want to express surprise, I will arc the eyeballs that's on here little bit. The irises will be slightly smaller. That without separating it completely from the lashes line, the mouth will be only slightly open. So if I want a strong expression of shock instead, I really exaggerated the arc of the rows, take up the irises and open the mouth more. For instance, here you are congrats, you made it to the end of the last lesson. To recap, you only have to slightly modify the eyebrows, the eyes, and the mouth to represent the motions. Remember that most of our expression asymptote as soon as the changes in our lines compared to a neutral expression. Now it's your turn. Draw three characters with different emotions and different angles and with different hairstyles to put together all that you have learned during this course. Once again, you can use the guides to help you then post your drawing so I can give you personalized feedback. And don't hesitate to ask questions if you have some 8. Conclusion: Congratulations, You made it to the end of the class. Doing this class, you firsthand simplified proportions of the head and the face. Then you'll learn how to draw the head in different angles from the sphere that we present, all types of hair on hairstyles. And finally, to represent emotions with very simple lines. When I say it was already a very intense course if you never do before. So if you feel overwhelmed, it's very normal to overcome this splitting. The only thing you need to do is to practice what you've just done regularly. Now you will hear a lot of artists say that we need to do everyday to progress. Here we are talking about folks that have troubles with the traditional method. So I would like to say that this is not the only way. This is certainly not how I progressed. And STF has been storing some drawing practice when I can. But in the end, all the, all these little efforts add up. But here what we need is to find within that fits you and your needs. And it can be really, really slow. I promise the most important, I think that you cultivate your motivation so we can let him tiny new efforts. And cultivating your motivation can really mean taking works and doing other activities that can inspire you like watching movies or reading books or things like this that will actually nurture your art and your ideas and your personality. Another thing I'd like to add is that this style that we just learned is perfectly functional. At least it will be when you have also learned how to draw the bodies and the backgrounds. The parties that choose to start at this level of complexity, especially in comics, I would say. And that can really go a long way and it's perfectly valid. And especially if you're just tell Hobbes than there is really no good for you. But yeah, if you want to develop your style a simplistic way on such inspiration, you can go for France and Belgium comic artist, or you can look into children's books or even sometimes longer. You can also find a lot of inspiration to develop your visual vocabulary, your visual vocabulary and hit. Okay, now to wrap it up, I would really appreciate if you could let a review from my class that would really help me if you told me what you found helpful on what you appreciate it. So I could put this in my other classes as well, and I could help you whether it could also help the other students to decide if my class he's made for them on it. In the meantime, I wish you a happy during while practicing your drawing skills and I wish to see you soon.
