About This Class

Understanding how to build your portfolio and present your work as a creative freelancer or designer is important in gaining those larger clients and obtaining work that YOU want to do. I have had the opportunity to hire graphic designers, copywriters, web designers, and social media mangers for my clients.

In this short class, we will go over the basics of portfolio building, things to consider when presenting your work. When I sort through hundreds of amazing portfolios, many way better than my own, I have learned what works and what does not. We will then put one together using Canva, a simple portfolio that includes a cover page and three projects. We will then explore an online option that will help you get in front of potential clients.

So let's start building!

I have had many self-made titles over the years: Brand Manager, Digital Architect, Interactive Designer, Graphic Designer, Web Developer and Social Media Expert, to name a few. My name is Lindsay Marsh and I have been creating brand experiences for my clients for over 12 years. I have worked on a wide variety of projects both digital and print. During those 12 years, I have been a full-time freelancer who made many mistakes along the way, but also realized that there is nothing in the world like being your own boss.

I have had the wonderful opportunity to be able to take classes at some of the top design schools in the world, Parsons at The New School, The Pratt Institute and NYU. I am currently transitioning to coaching and teaching.

1. Class Preview: understanding how to put together your portfolio. Present work as a creative freelancer or designer is important and gaining those larger clients and obtain in your work that you want to do. I had the opportunity to hire graphic designers, copywriters, Web designers and social media managers for my clients in the short class will go over the basics of portfolio building things to consider when presenting your work. When I soar through hundreds of amazing portfolios, many better than my own. I have learned what works and what to stopped will put together a simple portfolio that includes a cover page and three of your projects. He's in Canada, and then we'll explore an online option that will help you get in front of potential clients. Let's get started putting that portfolio together. 2. Portfolio Basics: every designer need the killer portfolio. When was the first impression made to a potential client? How did we present ourselves in the best way possible? Toe land? Those bigger clients portfolio should come in two flavors and online version and a PdF version. Online portfolios are easy to access. Candace play any video gifts, removable portfolio pieces you want to display. There are several free and paid portfolio builders. I'll go over and one website that I highly recommend. Pdf Port polos are essential if you want to work for an agency or companies, freelancer or a full time employee, trade this as you would a cover letter on your resume. Your PDM version should come in a little bit of info about your style yourself. Of course, anything that's worth bragging about what is great about a PdF version of the portfolio is it could be as detailed as you'd like and include branding projects that spanned multiple pages. You can present things in ways that are not possible on the Web page. Pdf Port pillows are easy to build on free versions candle in the past of your skin designed buildings, but it was very tedious and I love help. Campbell. It's me quickly working Photos build collages. It's perfect for displaying larger projects, so this all seems pretty easy so far. Why is it so hard to build a good portfolio? You have some good pieces designed, but are they good enough presentation to make a good project look great? Let's get started with a little bit of inspiration. This'll example. A simple clean gifts of your instant photos to explain style they emulate. To build an effective portfolio, you need to get into the mind of what the future client agency or viewers thinking when searching through hundreds of these portfolios. They're looking for someone with a certain type of style that will fit with your project. They need to find the right bit, not the best artist, our designer. You have to be true to yourself to your style and show right away to be able to catch their eye. Your first portfolio piece that is visible on your online version or your pdf version needs to be not your best work, but the work that best portrays the type of work you want to do. Sometimes that might be a personal project, personal fund projects have landed small designers big gigs, so don't shy away from using personal work. That is not a real company. Of course. Need to put that small disclaimer that this is a concept a non actual client. But sometimes those are the most expressive of your style, since he did not have a project or client limitations said on design. Secondly, you need to show the process of your design. This means for a local project. For example, you may choose to show a mood board, which shows where you source your color inspiration, and then you show your color palettes, font choices and then your final finish. Lobo Mark The show's a viewer that you're intimately involved in the whole process of design and understand that each project arise from from some source of inspiration to truly remain authentic as a design. This impresses the heck out of art directors when you could see this process happening, your design pieces. So if your first project best portrays your style in the second piece, could be your glory piece de L, a client that had some name recognition, or do you have a piece that you think looks the best, even though it might not be 100% your style. This is where we show diversity and work. It shows you could be flexible and work on a wide variety of projects. So how many projects do you show? There's a real possibility of overwhelming. You may feel every piece of your portfolio is equally good. I have a hard time not showing all of your work. Here's the hard truth. Less is more. Pick six of your best project and present them very well. This is more effective and overwhelming of you over 20 projects. To be honest, I have artists elected who I'm going to use by the time I get to the second project. So how do we display our chosen projects? Will cover that next less 3. Tips for Displaying Your Projects: Damn those 3 to 6 projects in mind. They definitely would have in your portfolio. Now, how do I best present them? Some of the best project presentations are more simple than you think. Instead of feeling like you have tow, wow them with business card, Social Media campaign A poster all on that one page are viewable image. Take time to space them out and show a theme running into several images of pages. This'll gifts of your time to digest each piece and to see your creative details and each project as they stroller flip through, they will get. This was my mistake when I first started out and made my work look more cheap. I wish I knew better and understood what the war was experiencing now that have been on the other side, and I've been the one hiring a creative freelancer. I now know how to present it. Make sure you give proper credits and links to the people and they collaborated with its working with a photographer on advertisement. You have a very small credit at the bottom right. Being able to show that you work with professionals is very telling us how you might fit on a larger team with multiple disciplines. Not all pro folios will fit all situations. I know when it comes to submitting your portfolio to nonprofits. They love to see other nonprofit work, so I would rearrange the order some river projects to make sure a nonprofit type project is more toward the top. So you may end up with a couple different variations of her portfolio, especially when it comes to your pdf version. Are you ready to take these basic principles and start creating are clean, simple, yet effective portfolio? Let's go ahead and head over to camp and start building it now. 4. Cover Page: So I'm in Canberra today. I'm gonna go ahead and build my pdf portfolio. The great thing about Canberra is you can go ahead and plug and play a lot of your works, and you're able to build kind of a front cover page to kind of sell yourself before people start looking at your portfolio work. So what I like to do is I like to actually go to the magazine cover. I'm going to click on this, and it already has kind of some pre made templates that we could plug and play totally customized to make it our own style. So that's what we're gonna do. So I went ahead and had one. I looked through all these. There was one. I think my work really good for a portfolio cover page, just like a cover letter for a resume. You're gonna wanna have some kind of introduction to your portfolio. A lot of people just put their name and that's it. They're date of kind of the items in their portfolio, and that's it. But we're gonna do a little bit more of an introduction, let people know of our style. What We're looking for. Everything like that. So right here I have this this kind of tagline and I have a little tagline I've used. I'm just gonna go ahead and copy and paste in here, and it kind of surmises kind of my design view, cause it's not a one size fits all world anymore. I'm gonna make this a little bit smaller, and it could kind of play around here with some options. I definitely wanted to be high impact, so I'm gonna make it bigger and several of these items I'm not gonna need. But I am gonna need my name. I'm gonna make this pretty large because I want people to remember Remember my name because this I want them to call me back. I want to get a job. You make this a little bit bigger. I'm actually gonna make this skinny. Oh, are a light won't wait. So let me see if they have skinnier Don't wait for me I don't want it to compete with a headline too much And I'm looking for a sands Sarah, We see if I can find one on I wonder if I could go down to railway. There we go. Railway, then perfect. And so a lot of these things we don't need these templates. I change things so much can no longer recognize the original template. I'm even gonna change the color at some point, cause I don't think this is really my color. I'm not loud, um, kind of more of established. And I worked with higher and brands. So let me kind of do I wonder if I kind of do a black how that's gonna look. I think that will have a nice high impact along with kind of a blue. That kind of tends to be my branded colors. Let's see what that looks like. And what's great about that. This Let me go ahead and make this kind of a light gray. I can bring this out by doing my blue color that I've been doing. Perfect. So right here in this little smaller paragraph, I'm actually gonna detail a little bit more what? I'm interested in what I've done. Kind of the highlights of what you're gonna see in the six portfolio projects I'm gonna including here. Um, so it's kind of surmising everything for the viewer, so I'm gonna delete a few these I'm gonna finesse this front cover a little bit. And once we're done with that, we're gonna start bomb putting together our first project presentation. 5. Refining Our Cover Page: so at a little bit of time to finesse the cover. And I decided to go with a much shorter kind of tagline for myself and also short in my bio . I didn't want to have anything to lengthy. That's great for a cover letter of a resume. But I really just want an introduction to kind of the projects Elsie and the projects that I want to work on. I'm actually to tweak this text later, but this is a little bit of a filler for now. And it also wanted to list my specialty so people can see right away what? I'm interested in what I have experience in. And I'm gonna go ahead, find somewhere nice to tuck this. Um, and I also want to have a photo. I think people really resonate when they can see what you look like. Not required. But just knowing all the resumes and different kind of portfolios I've looked at when I'm hiring people, I always love to see a photo. I just for some reason I connect with them. Ah, So let's go ahead and bring in. I believe I uploaded a photo. If not, I'll upload that and a little bit are gonna put in a sample cover. So let me go ahead and drag, and I'm gonna go to elements. I'm gonna get a for Roehm, and I think I'm gonna drag in a circular frame. Want to go down and find a circle frame? This is perfect. And I don't have my photo uploaded at the moment. Seems good. Do a filler for right now. Click OK, we'll kind of figure out like this A little bit bigger. Zoom in. They would go. We're gonna go ahead and start getting everything to move around this photo. Let's lead with our big headline and let's move this down a little bit. I wish Canada had a text wrapped option, but they actually do not have a text wrapping recognizably wrap it. Let's do that. And I want Teoh kind of go with this blue fame for my for my kind of portfolio. I went almost brand my own portfolio. So let me bring in so a shape go up here, Robert shape drag that in, go ahead and go with this blue color just actually the color of a little fake brand I created That's gonna be future than portfolio. Let's actually build this a little bit and make that blue for some consistency. And I almost wonder if I could bring in kind of a gray color somewhere and figure that out , But maybe that's not gonna work. So I'm gonna continue to finesse us a little bit. But this is kind of gives you a general idea of kind of the elements that would look good on the front cover of a portfolio. That's a pdf version that you'll be sending. I'm just kind of a quick introduction. It goes a long way. Instead of starting out with a portfolio piece. You you don't You don't resonate with that person. You kind of see them as okay, They're talented, they're fantastic. But who is this person? Are they gonna fit with what I'm looking for? What are their specialty? So this is kind of ah recommendation of mine. Personally, I think it goes a long way when people are looking at your portfolio. So next we're gonna move on to our first project. After I finesse this front cover just a little bit more 6. Finishing Our Cover Page: so one last attempt at noodling around with this front page cover, which is really the most important part of your portfolio. I spent about 15 minutes playing around with some elements, and I decided to flip the switch and actually go lighter and brighter because the high contrast is really gonna pop out when someone's looking through these at night time, they're going to see that bright, those bright colors and it's really gonna pop out to them. I also wanted to stay true to my design style. I like to do a lot of angles and alignment and wide spacing, and so I kind of wanted to emulate that in my front cover as well. So that's exactly what I did. I spent some time. These are just different elements. I was able to get my photo loaded in here, and these were just angles, that all kind of lineup. So all of all this is all aligned up with this angle right here, and this actually lines up with this angle right here. These are just simple shapes that I've loaded in squares, and so it has kind of a nice theme to it, and I decided to also short my bio to only be kind of one phrase, because I really wanted to highlight kind of what I do. So I want them to kind of have that one liner my name, what I dio and I decided to shorten it just a little bit because I wanted to focus more on the design elements. So notice how I went into a totally different direction. So it's really good to spend a little bit of time and revisit the design you feel good about, because you might decide to totally change it. And that's a great thing. So I think we're done with this, and this will set the tone and the style for the rest report or portfolio. So let's go ahead and get started. Finally, on that first project. 7. Presenting Our First Project Peice : So let's get started with the first project in Canberra and simply just gonna add a new page. And I can continue to add as many pages as I'd like to create kind of the magazine style. Pdf, Let's go ahead and create a new page. This is gonna be our first project, so I already have some things loaded in for the first project I want to display. So what I'm gonna do is kind of load a few things. Um, it's gonna be a branding campaign for just kind of, ah made up company. I made just for this example, and I I wanted to kind of present this in a really clean manner. And just like I said in my previous videos, you don't want to overwhelm with putting too many things on 11 page. So we're gonna take it easy. Just have the simple logo mark right here. I have two different styles. It's really good if you develop a logo that has different adaptations, those that this war is on a logo looks really great. And social media. This looks really great in print media, so kind of show a wider variety of your logo marks if you're doing logo design, if we doing photography, you're gonna also wanna do show different variations and types at the same time. So let's go ahead and load this in here. And I like kind of this black and white. I don't need to put any crazy things on here. I could go up here and bring in this angled element to kind of have a branded theme throughout the document. So let me copy that and bring it in. But I also don't want it to affect my branding presentation because this brand may have different style than than this blue and in a clash. So we could do this and kind of have this on every page. And we could even actually copy this and twist this around is going to use this and twist it and see if I can match that up a little bit better and we can actually put on the top to kind of have a being. So we can always keep this in here if we think it's too busy later on, when we do other pages weaken, simply take it out. But I like this nice clean design I'm gonna need to tell the viewer a little bit about what it's all about, so let's go ahead and do that next. 8. Layout of Our Project: So let's do something really clear and simple to kind of explain what this projects all about. So I'm gonna go ahead and take kind of elements. I've already has have a font developed here railway, which is what I always use for sample projects. I'm just copying that. Just gonna drag it down in here is what I love about Camba over in design and design is just a little bit more tedious when it comes a snapping all these things together. So that's why I've chosen Canda over in design, which is a more professional level program. But this works fantastic. So I'm gonna do this is the logo design. And actually, it's broader than that. It's a whole branding campaign, So I would just do branding, branding for Marcia Cafe course. I'll go back and make sure I spell check everything, But this is just an example. We can put this appear real simple, very small. We don't want to take away from the effectiveness of what's being displayed. Some having this in a really small font. Let me zoom in just a tad this really small, widely spaced all caps. And if we went up in a little more details. We can be careful not to put too much description. There's a thing is just too much going on. People really want to see what it looks like. They want to see what it's for, but they don't want to read your hood tire process of how you came up with it. They can ask you that later if they're really interested in you. So we'll say Logo design. Um, we could do advertise marketing, social media, campaign social or good to suit local. Or we could just do branding. Put a little tab there, some kind of divider separator. Actually, I think I kind of like this better cause I think it entered introduces the project a little bit better. So let me go ahead and see if it'll let me this perfect When we do this and just put Marsh Cafe has kind of the headline, and you make it a little bit bigger. They would go perfect. So just kind of the title of the project and what the project will entail. It's gonna be a couple of pages of different examples. I don't want to put everything on one page. There were start off with the logo. So Marsh Cafe branding, marketing social they'll understand. It's no logo design, so that's all you need to put. You don't need to put a lot of other things We could even Justin experiment. I'm gonna go ahead and group these two elements together was grouping them together, so I can actually maybe try out that angle and really kind of have a theme running through here. So you can tell What's the port? Far portfolio design and what's the separated project? So we could do that, But I think that's distracting. So let's let's not go too far with that. So just experimenting. And do we like this? I think this is too much. So let's get rid of one of these Perfect. That's even cleaner. And I do like the bottom one and add some kind of design element. Perfect. So this is the first page of our first project, and we're going to continue on and do other pages next by simply adding a new page and getting started 9. Adding Additional Pages to Our First Project: Okay, so this is our second page of our first project. I am an actually good of going toe elements elements, and I'm gonna be able to drag in some photos that way, or I can actually drag them in directly. So let's go to our uploads. It's kind of drag a few things. We already done the logos. There's a couple of things here. I'm going to drag these out. I kind of see what I think would work better. Here's the three other elements that I have for this project, and I may have MAWR let me scroll down. I think that's all. I have a couple of logo designs, but I think that's what I have to work with for the second page to have a menu. So it's going to make that a little bit smaller. We could put all three of these on here, and that will probably overwhelm the viewer. But they get to see the brand consistency which actually matches well with what our portfolio theme, which is not really intended. But that's just kind of what happened. Eso I'm actually gonna remove this. I don't think we need to have this on every page, so but we can always add it back. We think so. So this is a social media graphic. This is a business gardens, some menu. Let's put Social Media graphics on the next page. So let's just focus on these two items. Or even better. We do two items, and that's clean enough. We kind of took them. That's a nice left alignment here that's nice and clean. We can actually overlay the business card overtop. That has a nice look because this is kind of a blank area. It's not really being used. I like that a lot and we need to. We do need to explain. Let me just put these away a little bit. Took him away just so they barely overlap. We can even angle this just a little bit, so that's one way to do it. You can actually do mock ups if you're really good in Adobe Photo Shop, you could do some mock ups and actually put it on some cool imagery. But for right now, we're just using straight up images. Not sure if I like it angled or not assuming a little bit, so let's zoom out because I want to see the entire page. Okay, so let's go ahead. This is pretty self explanatory, so I'm not gonna need to have a title. So let's go ahead. Delete this up here. We kind of describe everything that we are up to up here. We're doing branding, marketing and social. So this is just part of the branding. I mean, it says them in you. So and this is a business car. But it may not be 100% sure that that's a business card, so we probably need to have a small note. So let's go ahead and grab on Group this and grab this one right here was gonna copy it, drag it down to this page. And we I think we need to label the business card, but the menu is self explanatory. Let's bring this down here and let's put business card was this took that here right down at the bottom, and we could describe the menu a little bit and detail may be saying menu full menu design . If we want to have some kind of detail. No, you could leave it alone. If you think it's self explanatory, we could actually even make this a little bit bigger. But I think it Then again, having some nice white space helps Thea user or the viewer focus a little bit more on the clean design. So I like the spacing of everything here. We can even add a slight angle to this right there and have enough white space of this lettering. Doesn't interfere with the being able to view and interpret the design here. So great, there's page number to see how quickly we're designing this. And I'm actually gonna go ahead and remove this element because I feel like I wanna I don't want to distract from the branding of this, since it's so close to what I'm doing up here at the top. So there we go. We might be able to add some kind of line Blue Line or something here on. Go back and finesse that. But we're ready for page three of our first project 10. Let's Wrap Up Presenting Our First Project: So now that we've done kind of print, we've done branding, the next thing left is going to be social media. So I'm gonna go ahead and copy this sampling this text right here. We know we wanna kind of say, social media, Let's drag and only have two items, and that might be a good thing, you know, when I show too many. But you want to show that how you can adapt two different platforms and what I like to do. I don't have it for this situation, but I like to actually take whenever the ad runs and social media I would go ahead and take a screenshot of it actually placed on instagram for the in this case or Facebook so you can actually see that it's a live campaign and it ran, So if you have a chance to do, that would be fantastic. If you do have social media graphics or if you're creating your own for a fake company, then just having a couple of social media items at all match that kind of show that you can adapt a designed to several different sizes and campaigns is good as well. So let's go ahead and drag in this instagram and I believe I just I have another little Facebook right here and let's go ahead And we can title these because I don't think people are gonna really no, let's go ahead and zoom in a little bit more. I don't think people are really gonna be able to tell. That's Instagram and the people know the sizes. But let's go ahead on Instagram campaign Let's not say campaign because I think that's assumed so Instagram would say graphic were we could just leave it very simple. Instagram. Let's make this slightly larger. So this is more of a heading Lucas at Social Media. Do we need a bold it or make it bigger? There we go. I don't want these small labels to compete with the header. Copy this, and that's gonna be Facebook so very clean and simple. We probably need to put a border around that if this gives us an opportunity where we need to drag in a frame and that has a border on it, just so there's some differentiation between this white and my background, so there's a simple fix to that when you go ahead and grab. That's good elements and get a shape in here to bring in a shape. Let's make it really, really, really like Gray just so you could tell the difference. I think that's too like I think that's almost whites. Let's just bring a little grayness perfect. See how they kind of pop out? So that works well with that page and we can This is center aligned, but we can always play around with alignment in our portfolio pieces kind of play around. I like that a lot. Makes you look, makes you kind of your eye goes left or right so perfect just noodling and finding out what's going to be high impact. What's gonna what's the best way to arrange this so that it looks the best, So we could actually probably bring in some kind of background. But I really don't want to distract from the actual design piece, so let's just keep it simple. And let me just lighten that gray ever so slightly perfect. So we're done with this entire, uh, project. This is the first project that's gonna be shown, and we're gonna go ahead and work on the second project and do 1/3 and then go ahead and wrap this up 11. Working with Other Project Presentation Styles : So for the second project, I wanted to do something a little bit differently. I wanted to do kind of a story based presentation. So instead of doing what we did before, we did straight up images kind of a simple presentation. We do kind of a story driven presentation. I feel like that's gonna work, Bob really well with this next project, because all it is is a branding and logo project. There's nothing. I didn't do anything outside of the logo and the color palette, so I want to find a fun way to present this on one page. It's only have two graphics to work with. Let's go ahead and bring in this graphic. I have this one with color palette and logo and let's bring in this one. Which is the mood board, which was where I sourced the color palette from, So wouldn't it kind of present this in a neat way? I'm actually gonna Duke. This is actually one image. I have it actually duplicated and crop it just so I can separate these elements. So this is just I'm going to do it. So that's one element. Now, miss double clicking and get a crop, just the color palette. Perfect. So we could do this in any way. How we ever how we went to present it. I feel like we want to do the logo last cause we kind of want to set everything up with presenting the mood board first and then the color palette second and then finally presenting what we did with it. So let's go ahead and make. This is biggest we can that can really see how we created our mood board. Let's go ahead. Dragger color palette. Make sure there's enough white space and local kind of small, so they can kind of. It's not overwhelming. I'm not sure what element that IHS. Go ahead, delete that Perfect. So there's a couple things we can do. We can add kind of a background image to bring it all together. So let's see if I have 11 of these original images that I've done a while ago and we'll have load that in and kind of create many design from it. So I have this one right here, which is that upper right image and then could do this with a different photo. Doesn't have to be from anything you've done something that helps you kind of tell the story. It's double click and super gets in better cropping here. Maybe over there do. That's bringing over here. Click. OK, we don't want her to get cropped off too much, so we could experiment. Maybe there is a background photo that tells the story a little bit better. So maybe this one direct that in just kind of presenting it. In a way, we're telling the story. Maybe like that, you can always find a different photo that works out better. But that is what I have for right now. Actually, I have this one, but that might already be big on the mood board. So we'll just keep it at that. With the cool texture, we could even bring in an element of the branding. So let's bring in a shape bringing the shape and let's actually make it. It's gonna let me bring it in. There we go do kind of a bar. Very simple bar right here to divide these two elements, sending that to the background and I'm gonna make this one of these colors. No, I have to bring this in adobe color. There's a website color dot adobe dot com. I need to get those hex colors for that so I could be able to bring that into Canada. I could type in the hex color right there, so I get in the Zach match. But I just could do a little quick eyeballing. That could be perfect, but I want to try to source that purple. There we go. That's pretty close. Good enough, for example. So it's a different time type of presentation. I'm not overwhelming the viewer. All they have is a simple logo design project. I'm telling the story of how I got there, so it really can tell people your design style and I. So that's one way to do a presentation. 12. Working With Mock-ups: Sometimes you need more than just simple JPEG images to display your work. Sometimes you have a website, and you want to kind of present it in a way where you're not just posting a J peg of your website. So there's a actual. There's something called mock ups where you can post your your work on certain objects, and it looks like it's actually on there. So I do a lot of my Photoshopped mock ups and photo shop, and there there's a lot of great ones you can download. But this is when he can actually do online. You don't you don't have to sign up for an account called Mock Upper, so I'm gonna go ahead and upload a little website screenshot that I did that. I want to go ahead and present, so I want to present it on a tablet so they have a couple here. There's already one that I experimented with that worked out really well. Let's say I think it's this one, so I'm gonna go ahead and choose. Go ahead and load in my screenshot where there's a lot of different websites, you don't have to use this one's This is when I found it. Didn't have to sign up for an account. So I'm gonna go ahead and drop in. I have my test here, so I'm dropping this in. I'm gonna make sure I crop it How? I'd like it. And you can actually change how much reflection you went on the screen. So I'm gonna click done. It's gonna pop it on a mock up for for us. I want hadn't downloaded this mock up course you can do switch around pretty easily, but I'm gonna go back into Canada and let's go ahead and experiment a little bit with us. 13. Finishing Our Portfolio : So I'm back into Canada and I'm gonna go ahead and create this project. It's gonna be a Web design project, and I'm gonna put W w website name. I can make that a little bit smaller and we can go ahead and drag in our mock up. I love the way mock ups look and percent work. So let's go ahead, cause if I were to just take a simple J peg, it's OK, but it's really hard to see the project when it's not in its context. Let's bring this in and this looks a lot better. Actually, Zoom in. I'm gonna turn this little bit so it's not quite as angled, and I'm gonna send this all the way like it's all the way in the back. So that's perfect right there. I'm actually gonna bring in the box. Was good elements, shapes. I'm actually gonna try to match that gray little bit. They would go bring in the background. Well, I could be able to match it perfectly. There we go. That works. Who could put our website here? Maybe in a bar? What's actually separate? The two bring in a box here. The website We don't want to interfere with the Web, Design it all. So what's this kind of do this? And then we could actually add another page and maybe go into a little bit of the sub pages . Sub manu system. If you have a video of your website that be amazing toe load in this a pdf versions, you can do that on your online portfolio. Eso for this This will have to do can send them to the website, maybe have a paragraph on your next page that explains any kind of user experience components that you work with. Maybe you work with the team. Or maybe you're just have a mock up. And it's not a live website you could put down here very simply, you know, test mock up. Or, um, this is just a test company, you know, just kind of Ah, way to phrase it, um, And get that on there just to make sure you cover all of your all of your basis legally, Just don't let them know that this is just a fake mock up that you came up with to practice and to show you their style. So there we have it we have several projects loaded into our little portfolio. What we're gonna do is we're gonna go. What? Go ahead and export this as a PdF there's gonna go to download. PDF. We're gonna do standard because we want to be able to put this online and send it via email . If we need to. All pages and download. And we have our pdf portfolio made. You can now create your online portfolio, and I'll get into that in the next video. 14. An Online Portfolio Option: when it comes to building an online version portfolio. We could have moved objects, gifts, videos on the website that I highly recommend and it's free to sign. A four is begins dot net will be hands dot com. Adobe actually owns them, but you don't necessarily have to have an Adobe i D or a paid account to be able to use it . And it's actually one of the best places to go for design, inspiration and has some of the top designers photographers in the world that used this and a lot of scouts on people at agencies who are looking for young talent or new talent also scalp this for projects that are posted. So let's go ahead and go back already have kind of a little portfolio that I created, but you can add projects very easily doing this, and you would actually take the same principles that we've just done with the pdf version and apply it to this as well 15. Creating Our Online Portfolio from Our PDF Version: So now we're gonna take our pdf version of our portfolio, and we're gonna load it onto our family inversion on. There's an easy way to do this instead of exporting as a pdf, we're gonna go to download, and we're actually gonna export as J pegs and we're gonna export all the pages. So now we're gonna have all of our different pages a separate J. Paige's weaken, Then load it on to be hance. We already have the pdf version styled the exact way we like it. We're gonna kind of emulate that on be Hance by adding some of those Jay Peak images. So I have our project of our marsh cafe. I wanted to go ahead and add, so I'm actually gonna try out photo grid, which is actually a new option. I think this can look really well, so I'm just gonna go ahead and upload the three different J pegs that relate to that one project and let's see how they look. So this is an option. You can show them all of this at once, and let's go ahead and edit our grid. We can edit the order of our grid and a lot of times. Let's see add. We can add additional photos and then we can save. Let's kind of see how this looks. We'll continue. We want to have a really nice project cover image. That's what people see on the main be hands page. So you need to make sure it's the most high impact image you have, which will probably be Let me even zoom in a little bit on this logo right here. I think that probably describes the project the best. So perfect. So go ahead and have a project title crop and continue. Ah, we're just gonna save it. I'm not gonna publish it quite yet because I also want to try out a different option. So any time you have your portfolio on a website or you're building a web page, you wouldn't make sure any text is live. So you notice when we uploaded those images, there were some pics elation on some of the headers and text. So this is what I recommend when building your online portfolio is to use life tax for your headers and project description whenever possible. That makes it better for S e O makes it better for search engines to find your project. And its makes it easier for people searching for search turns on being Hance to be able to find your project. So I'm actually gonna go into my project in Canberra and actually copy and paste some of that text out and remove it. And then export is a J peg. So right now, this header, we're gonna actually make this live text on the website. So we're just gonna delete this element delete group and let's go ahead and rearrange are elements make him a little bit bigger and the now it can re export Same thing with this. We're gonna actually delete this, and we're gonna have the headers a little bit separated. So, like I've said in the past, you may have some different variations. So what I do is I goto file and I make a copy, so I still have my original PD a version of my portfolio. But if I make a copy, this could kind of be my online J pegs that I can upload to be Hance or another other another kind of website to be able to build your portfolio kind of the way that works in a digital environment, and that may be a little bit different. So we may want to separate these elements a little bit, make them straight, just like this. I think that'll look really good on the hands. Same thing with the social media. We're actually gonna create a separate header for that. So it's live text on be hands or any other website you want to use what could actually make these elements a little bit bigger, too? So they span a little bit more of the page. Perfect. So now I'm ready to export this project and get it loaded on to be a chance. Come back and be hands and I have some live text here, a copy and paste with my headers, and you can play around with font size and change the color. You're a little bit limited with kind of your options, but it's live tax, which is very important to keep, so let's go ahead and upload some files. I was able to crop a few of these to kind of remove some of the white space, and you can easily do that in Camba. Let me load my logos in first and see how we want to have these mom. So let's see if it gives us a little bit. There we go. Let's reduce the width of this just a little bit. We don't want to overwhelm someone with a super large image, so it gives you just one option to kind of re size, so that makes me wanna maybe go back and reduce the size just a little bit. But let's keep loading in some of the additional images, so let's go ahead and add are other remaining two images. So we have to think of the order we want the viewer to see or project in. I want to maybe move social media down a notch so we can go ahead and reorder the project and let's have what's going to shift. Some things were gonna shift this. We want social media to be last. Let's go put that below the poster and let's go ahead and save. We can also add new text options for headers so we can explain our overall project. But we can put different descriptions between each to kind of say okay, this is the menu. But we also did this this and this, and so it can have add a little bit of a district descriptor line between each image so it can go ahead and add text. Eso add text here, and then you can go back to reordering your project. So I went ahead and wrote a little social media blurb campaign because I would have a little bit of text to divide some of these project images. So let's go ahead and reorder the project. I'm actually a move that right before you see my social media images gonna save and so what ? It's nice to be able to have your header. You haven't image get this kind of see the print campaign that branding you scroll down, then you're kind of introduced to something and you get a little bit of text saying who you ah cooperated with? Who did you work with? What was the results? If they're really good, definitely highlight them, gives you a nice break. It explains what I'm looking at instead of a bunch of images that I don't understand. Well, what was the impact of this image where you can say it right there, So it's kind of a neat way to build a bullet. I'm gonna go ahead and save this. And it was that quick to do a project. So once you have your pdf kind of done, you already have the raw images. They may need a little bit of cropping. You may need to remove some of the headings, but that you can adapt him really easily to an online portfolio. So I'm saving, and I'm gonna be able to post this online selecting a really nice cover image. Really Think about this. Figure out what is the neatest part of this project? What has the highest impact? Maybe it's just the logo, and then you go ahead and select all of these different options and you can publish. I'm actually just gonna save now cause I'm not ready this kind of a pretend project for me . But I hope you had fun trying to build your portfolio online and offline with a pdf version and good luck and have fun building yours
