Brush Pen Calligraphy: Create colourful gradients, shadows and highlights

1. Introduction: I. I'm really an experience calligrapher in graphic designer. I've been running my business blink lettering for over three years. On in the past year, I've been teaching calligraphy workshops online and in person. The aim of this class is take your brush pen calligraphy to the next level, therefore, is designed for people who already have a basic understanding. Brush pen calligraphy. Throughout this class, your learn different techniques on how to create radiance with brush pens. I will also take you through how to add shadows and highlight two letters to to really make them pop from the page. The aim for this class is to combine all this girls that you learn to create a bright, bold, colorful greetings card. Each lesson will take you through the different skills that you need to create your class project, and by the end, you'll have the confidence to create your greetings card. So let's get started on work through these lessons together 2. Supplies: things class. You need some water based brush patterns, paintbrush or water, brush, pen, paper and some detail ing pens. In this video. I'm gonna take you through all these supplies that you'll need to complete this class on the final project. The main supply you'll be using for this class and your final project is water based brush pens. There are so many different water based crush friends out there on you can find a list of quite a few in the class description. You don't need all of the's brush pens for this class. You can't just have one type of brush pen. Just make sure you have a variety of colors so you can make your greetings card really colorful and stand out. During this class, I'll be using three different brands of brush pens just to give you a bit of variety in size of nearby on style of lettering. The first pen we have is the Tom Bo, a BT Jewell brush pen thes come in so many beautiful colors. I think there's over 100 colors. Thes brush pens have two ends. Hence where they called, Tom bowed your brush pens at one end you'll find a large neb, which is flexible. This is what I used to create the lettering below. At the other end, you'll find a bullet tip. This isn't flexible, but is great, adding extra detail or touching up your lettering. The next brush pen is the creator. Super tips. Now this isn't quite a brush pen have. It works in a very similar way to a brush pen. The reason I've included this in this class is Crayola. Suit tips on normal Crayola pens are really affordable. So if you're just getting started and you don't want to spend too much money, then this is a great pain. Start with. They also come in so many beautiful colors. The nip of a creator super tip is tapered. This means it's still possible to create the thick and thin lines needed for brush pen calligraphy. The final pen is my favorite pen, and it's perfect for beginners. They blend really nicely, and you can get a pack of 12 covers. The nip on these pens is also flex ball, similar to the Tom Vote your brush Patton, but as you can see, the name is much smaller. This is why the pen is so much easier to use for beginners because it's a lot more controlled and there isn't as much flex in the neb. It also means you can write a similar size that you're used to writing in your everyday life. As I've already said, it's really important that use water based brush pens. There are some brush pens out there that are core based. However, they won't be off to blend in a similar way to these water brush pens, especially when it comes to using a paintbrush and water. Throughout this glass, you'll learn different techniques on how to blend what base brush pens. All the techniques can be used with pretty much any board based brush pen. So if you're not using any of thes and that's totally fine as always, it's water based. You'll be able to achieve the same effect. Next. All the supply list is a paintbrush or a water brush. Pen will be needing to use this later on to blend some colors together for the paintbrush. I've just gotta Windsor and Newton Cotman Paintbrush in size varies era You can pretty much use any paintbrush, ideally, one that's great for water colors, and I love having a really small paintbrush, as this will really help with the detail later on. This is water brush pen is basically a paintbrush and has bristles at one end. How that it also has a barrel, that you can fill water. This means you don't need to dip it in water. Constant me on the water can slowly flow out while you're using it. This is my preferred paintbrush when blending water based brush pens together papers really important when it comes to using brush pens, as any text of paper can fray some brush pens. There is some exceptions to the rule, though Throughout this class I'll be using three different types of paper. The first paper I'm using is a hate P premium paper. This is available both in the UK and the US is quite a sin paper, so it's great for practicing on. However, the paper is really smooth, and it's bleed. Proof is well. This means that your bank won't bleed when you write on it. It's really important. Have smooth paper for your brush pen so they don't fray, particularly if you're using pens like the Tom Bowed your brush pen. The second paper I have here is Bristol board. This is much sicker than hate P premium paper. And it's great to use when you want to create your final project. Ah, bright, colorful greetings card. Again, this paper is really smooth. A lot of different brands. Great Bristol board. The brand that I'm using in this class is Winds and Newton. The final paper I have here is watercolor paper. Now this is text of watercolor paper and I wouldn't recommend this brush pens, So please bear in mind if you're planning to use watercolor paper, make sure that your brush pen won't free on it or use a smooth watercolor paper. The pent out up sign pen is great to use on watercolor paper because the name is really durable and wait fray there for you won't be damaging it. The reason I'll be using watercolor paper in this class is because there are some aspects that will involve using water in a paintbrush and using watercolor paper like this is less likely to walk. Unlike some of the other papers we have here in this class, as well as learning how to create radiant using brush pens. I will also be taking you through how to add highlights and shadows to your letters to. Therefore, you'll need a few different detail in pens for this class. The 1st 2 pens are great, adding highlights to your letters. Both of these a una bore signal Joe pens. However, this one is then on the other one is broad. He's very much like most gel pens that you'll see in shop. There are so many different white pens out there on there are a few others are great for highlighting as well. However, I really recommend thes two pens as their the most intense white, and it's great. They come in different thicknesses so you can use them on different size lettering. The next pen is the Secura Pigna might cramp in thes pens have a bullet tip. This size is a 0.3. However, they come in a variety of different sizes from Northpoint, not five, all the way up to one, nor point not five beans in on one being sick. Thes Penn's a great adding line shadows to your lettering on because you can get varying thicknesses of Neb. You can really create fine detail. Next, we have a very similar pen to the Secure A Pigna Micron. This is the Darwin graphic line marker. I'll also be using this in this class as it's a great one instead of black. The size I have here is no 10.1. The's sizes are exactly the same as the picture might cramp. Ends is great to have a few different sizes and a few different shades. Off line pens like this just say you can create a bit of variety when you're creating or shadows. The final pen is the cure. A tacky is it clean color grill brush. And, as you can guess by the name, it is actually a brush pin, too. It's also bought based, and they come in a huge variety of colors. You could even use this pen for great ingredients as well. I absolutely love how light this gray color is, and it creates a perfect base, the shadows on your lettering without it being too intense against the bold, bright colors. This brush pen is slightly different, and it actually has Brussels, so it's a little bit more like a paintbrush than a pen. This gives it a lot of flexibility when creating shadows, meaning that you can really get into tight corners and curves 3. Gradient Basics: before we dive into different techniques and how to blend your brush pens. I want to take you through a few different Grady INTs so you can get a little bit of inspiration on what colors mix. Well, Andi start having to think of how you'd like your final project to look the first half Grady INTs on the left. A shade radiance, these ingredients to go from a light shade to a dark shade. Here you can see light blue to dark blue, orange to red on green. Too dark green. The's Grady INTs that easiest to create because they're very similar colors and you're just blending shades. Therefore, the colors date mixed too much, and it creates a nice Grady int from light to dark. Next, we have radiant that are contrasting colors. First, we have a pink to red light blue, and as you can see in the middle, it started to create a bit of a purple. So if you only have a few colors, but you actually want to create the color that you may not have, think about the colors you already have and how they makes together because you may be able to create a color that you're missing. For example, if you only have primary colors like blue and yellow, you could mix them together to create green. So when you can create ingredient using a blue and yellow pen, it actually creates the Grady int from blue green to yellow. If you want to be really bright and colorful, feel final piece, you could even create a rainbow effect here. We're going from pink to purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red. Now I've picked the colors in this order because they blend nicely together. I moved through the spectrum of colors. If you had put to put the green between the pink and purple, then you probably start getting a bit of a muddy brown color. And it wouldn't create this beautiful rainbow spectrum that we have here. So that's just a quick little color theory on how different colors mix on what you can create with them. So if you only have a few colors, that's totally fine. You're still gonna be have to create something really bright and colorful for the class project 4. Gradients: Light to Dark: for this first radiant technique, I'm gonna show you how to blend like colors too dark. This is great way to add a bit of depth to your letters and give a little bit more personality. The pens I'm gonna be using for this class is the creator of Super Tips. And I'll also be using the hate P premium paper. However, if you're using a different brush pen, that's totally fine to just make sure it's water based. You want to pick two colors that are off the same shade. Say, here I have a light green and a dark green, but you could use some other colors, like a light blue on a dark blue or yellow and an orange, for example, to start off right, your chosen word using the light colored pen for this video, I'm gonna be mainly focusing on capital letters. However, you can always write in any different style. You like this. Grady in technique will work for all styles, - so over in the word green. Now what we'd like to do is create a Grady int from light to dark, so we want dark green at the top of the letter and light green at the bottom, take a darker color and start tracing over the letters, but only to just under halfway. You could always draw a line like this across your letters just to remind you where to stop . - Now we've added in the dark color. We want to start trying to blend the colors together. We're gonna do this by using the light color pen again. All you need to do is to start, has done to the dark green and pull up and then pull down. What we're trying to do is to smooth that edge between the light and the dark. As you can see this lot smoother here compared to the rest of the letters, make sure you're really controlled with the strokes. You don't want to scruple too much, because then you might start wearing into the paper or it might start beating up a little bit. You could even rip it as well, so just do one strike at a time and just pull up and down. So you're just blending out where that harsh Linus and it's simple is that you don't need anything else you can just use. Depends that you have just make sure that you do you like color first and then your dark color and then use your like a little blend. You don't need to worry about ruining the never on the light pen. If you have any excess dark ink picking up on your neighbor, then just give it little scribble on a scrap piece of paper on, the residue will come off. 5. Gradients: Mixing Inks: Now let's look at another technique where you can blend two very different colors together and create a different kind of radiant bettering. For this video, I'm going to be using the Tom Bo A B T jewel brush pens and also a pen. Tell food a touch sign pen. I also have some extra supplies here. However, if you don't have them, that's perfectly fine. It could still work without the supplies. Versi. I have a little paint palette. You can also use a piece of plastic, like a sandwich bag or something like this. It just needs waterproof surface said. The ink doesn't get absorbed. Finally, I also have some ink. This is the doctor Ph. Martin Bombay Acquit in the Ink General, I'd advise you to use a liquid watercolor. However, I found that this ink still works really well. Using in conjunction with Penn, Tell food ate up sign pen. So let's dive into this technique Forsee. Just take two colors of the same brush pen. Here. I've got number 493 and 755 Absolutely loved this combination of pen. It is a really bright blue on a break pink, and when blended together, they look beautiful and add a little bit of a purple in as well. This time, we're gonna blend directly on the nips rather than on the paper, and it will create a slightly different radiant start off by coloring in the nip of one pen . Now, if you've got a significantly lighter color, then the other thing you want color in the light of nib. As you can see, I'm just adding pink onto this blue nip. There isn't blue ink or to transferring onto the pink slip to that's totally fine is also won't ruin your brush pen, but that's why it's so important to use a water based brush pen. The income This neb is starting to change color. Once you got enough ink on the nip, you can pop one color to the side, and then you can let her using the other pen. As you can see, it's create this beautiful Grady int where the pink from the tip of the name has blended into the blue of the main nib. This creates a very different type of Grady in to the video before and as you can see, the more you let with it, the more the pink loses color. Now, if you wanted to add a little bit more pink halfway through, they know you need to do is stop after one of your letters and just color in a bit more ink . Now this pink has got a bit of blue residue on, so just to get rid of it, take a scrap piece of paper. I need to just scribble. You can see it slowly, changes color as we're getting rid of the blue. And now we're back to pink. If you're feeling a little bit nervous about coloring directly onto a neb, we were never is a bit too small to do something like that. Then you can always take a little bit of plastic like this, then scrip it onto the cutter. This now kind of acts a little bit like a paint palette. All I need to do it's just pick up some color, and then I could still let with it. This also makes it easier to continue adding color to your name as you let her for a slightly more intense color planned, you could always dip your brush into the water. Klink What I love about the doctor. Ph. Martin's Bombay, India ink is that has a little drop on the end on the Penn. Tell food a touch sign pen of fits perfectly inside, so I can just load up the pen with a little bit of ink. Now, when I write with this, you can see that there's quite a lot off the green ink in this compared to when we just brushing two pens together. And that's because the income really soak up into the nib, as you can see is, you carry on writing, the ink will start to flow out and you come back to your original penny color. And just like before. If you want to get rid of any residue ing, just need toe. Give a little scribble. Sometimes you might need to twist the pen around just to get the ink read off on all sides and now about pink. I absolutely love this technique of blending. I think it looks so special and a little bit different. I think a lot of people be a bit mind blown on how you most create such a beautiful blend like this, and I just love how the colors just intertwined with each other 6. Gradients: Rainbow: this'll final, Grady in technique, I'm gonna show you how you can blend your brush paints together using a little bit of water on a brush. We're gonna be nice and colorful for this video on. We're going to create some rainbow lettering for this video. I'm using the pen tell food, a tap sign, pens, some watercolor paper, waterbirds, pen and a paintbrush, and I got a little bit of water head to. As I said in the Supplies video. If you're using textured watercolor paper, I wouldn't really recommend it. For most brush pens, however, the pen tell fut touch sign pens are great use on watercolor paper. If you did want to create this technique using water, you could get away with using a really thick card or even a smooth watercolor paper. And then he'd be able to use different kinds of brush pens to mercy. I'm going to write the word rainbow, and I've actually put my pens in order of how I want to blend them. This just makes it easier when you're writing so you don't get to muddled up with what colors go next. Take the first color and start writing your word change pens after each letter when you were in the whole word, Gonna take your paint birth. If you're using a normal papers, just dip it, love it, water, then blend where the two colors join. Try and go from light to dark. - As he can see, the colors have blended really nicely together. When you are moving between different colors, just pop your paintbrush back into the water and wipe off any residue of ink on a scrap piece of paper to the side. If you're using water brush pen, you don't need to dip it into the water we need to do is to squeeze the barrel and a little bit of water will come out in the nip. You don't want too much water on the neb, so just make sure you wipe off any extra water on a scrap piece of paper to the side. If you put too much water down where you're blending the colors, you can always pull the water up into the rest of the color. Things creates a nice watercolor effect throughout your letters. Remember to start with the light color and then move into the dark way if you still find any harsh lines like where we have this pink and purple. You can always take your light in color and just go back in and help lend out a little bit more. In some places where you put too much water, some of the ink might become a little bit lighter. So again you can go back in with the color just to darken it up a little bit. So that's 1/3 way you can blend your purse pens. You can take any of the techniques you've learned for good, blending these brush pens and use them in a variety of ways. So, for example, if you wanted to blend liked her dark. You could still use water, brush or paint brush to blend the two colors together rather than going over with the light pen. Using a paintbrush in the water breath spent his creates a very nice watercolor effect on adds another dimension to your lettering. 7. Shadows & Highlights: shadows and highlights a great way of making your lettering stand out on the page. Here, you can see a few examples of how shadows and highlights have really changed the look and feel of each of these words. I absolutely love the different styles you can create using shadows and highlights in the next few videos, I'll be taking you through understanding how shadows work and how to create them, different types of shadows that you can create, and also different ways of highlighting your text as well. For the next few videos, you'll need your T telling pens as we work through highlights and shadows together. 8. Understanding Shadows: before we jump into different styles of shadows, I'm gonna take you through understanding how to actually create shadow on where the shadow needs to sit on the text, according to a light source to start off with. I'm just going to share you physically how the shadow works around this object using a torch. So if I shine it from this side, you can see the light source is coming from here, and it's creating a shadow over here. Now if I want to move around and you can see the shadow is always on the opposite side to the light source, it's an exercise that can really help understand how shadows work. We could take a pencil and start drawing shadows around this shape. So, firstly, start by drawing a light source. Let's say I want my like to come from here so it's gonna be shining onto the object on this side. So give a guess on where you think the shadow will set If the light source is coming from that direction and just draw on doesn't have to be exact or perfect. This is just a rough sketch to understand how the shadows working so now, if I take my torch and I shine it from this angle, we can see how the shadow is sitting. So I've just got the light shining from here on, we concede the shadows actually going straight through this box, it is extended a lot further, and that's just because the torch is very close. If I would her lived up a little bit. You can see it starting toe, match my shadow exactly to take a few minutes to sit and do this exercise drawing different light points and figuring out where the shadow might sit. So, for example, if the light source is coming from this side, the shadows actually gonna go in this direction now generally, if it shining on the right on the top, thin the shadow is going to come from the bottom on the left and then here is shining from the left on the top said the shadow is coming from the bottom on the right. So it's always gonna be working on the opposite side. Here we can see that the shadow sitting on the top on the left. Therefore, the light source is coming from this direction, whereas on these other three. The lights Are we coming from this direction? Because it's sitting on the right on the bottom. So how do we apply this to our lettering? Another great exercise is to draw for treason. Word on a piece of paper. I've stuck toe all cap letters just to keep it easy and simple. If you take a piece of tracing paper and lay on top, we can use this word over and over again on draw different shadow angles on it. So I'm going to choose my light source over here again, just like we did for the object. So I know that the light is shining to the left on to the top off each of these lines, so the shadow will always be on the opposite side. You just take your pencil and draw down the sides where the shadows will be. This doesn't need to be perfect. It's just to give an understanding of whether shadow will be in relation to the light source. So I'm just drawing on the right side on the bottom of each line so we could see it's already starting to create a shadow effect. So what if the light was going from a different place. This time I'm gonna draw my light source from the bottom. Right? Sorry. The know that the light is gonna be hitting the right hand side and underneath as well. So that means we want to draw all our shadows on the left hand side on at the top. So now we can see that the shadow is sitting a slightly different angle. Try this excite a few times, really changing where the light source is coming from. So you can really think about the shadows and how they work. This means when it comes to adding shadows to actual letters, you already have an understanding off where the shadows will sit in relation to your light source. 9. Shadows: Line: There are lots of different styles of shadows that you can create. Make your lettering really stand out as long as you follow the simple rule that the shadow always sits on the opposite side to imagined light source. Then you can really get creative with your shadows and take you through three different styles to get you really thinking off what you can do with your shadows and give you some inspiration for your final project. The first style we're gonna be looking at is a simple line shadow. Now, for the purpose of this video, the light source is always going to come from the top left hand corner, which means that the shadows always gonna sit on the bottom and right side of each stroke for this line Shadow. I'm going to be using this occur, Pittman micron in north 0.1. But you can use anythin tick bullet pen you have. So I want to draw a line on the right side on underneath each stroke. However, I don't want them to connect the letters at all. It's really important to have a steady hand for this, so make sure you go really slow, So you can get a lot of control. If you find it easier, you can always tell the paper to help you draw your lines. If your bet Nervous jumping straight in with a pen You could always do your shadows in pencil first. Then you can look to see if it looks right. Okay, - when you have a curve like this on the why to understand how the shadows, it's it you never want the lines crossing over each other. So when I start drawing the shadow on this side, I'm gonna play it down and I'll finish about there. If we were to pull it too far over, then it would now be sitting on top of the stroke. We want to sit underneath or to the right hand side, and there we have it, a simple line shadow. This just makes your letters pop out the page a little bit. You could always have a bit of fun experimenting with different colors for your shadow so you could have black text with the neon pink shadow that would look so cool 10. Shadows: Thick: For the next hour, I'm gonna be using the Curia. Take E Z Clean color, real brush pen. The reason I'm using this is because it's got a flexible neb. This time we're gonna be creating a thick shadow that sits directly next to the strokes. Using a brush pen like this means that where the curves are, we could taper the shadow, so it gives it a more natural feel. Again, it's important to get really slowly, and I absolutely love the clean color pens cause you can get a really light grey. So it's really nice, subtle shadow. So the curve, I'm just gonna lightly touch the tip, and then as it goes around the corner, they're gonna press a little bit harder. So we get a nice tapit effect at the curve. If you're creating this style of veteran, I recommend that your shadows always lighter than the actual pen color. If you're to use quite light ink for your letter color on a dark ink fuel shadow, it's likely that you'll get a bit of overlap of ink and it won't look as smooth and even again you could experiment with colors. With this, I have a pastel purple color in these real brush pens, and it is absolutely beautiful to use for shadows, and there we have it, even though the shadows sitting exactly the same as the previous one, this style looks so much more different, the shadows nice and subtle and is a little bit more like a realistic shadow. 11. Shadows: Stippled: final style. We're gonna get a little bit creative for the shadow. I'm gonna create it using a stippling effect. If you're not sure what Stippling is is basically where you add lots of tiny dots to the paper, using or pen. For this style, I'm gonna be using the Darwin graphic line marker in size 0.1. However, just like the first style you can use any sort of bullet tip you'd like. Just make sure it's quite sin and small like the first. I'll just draw a line to the right and blow each stroke, not connecting to the letters way with the lines. Two strikes. We just want to add the stippling effect. The trick for this is to have a lot of dot close to the line. And as you move away from the line, start making them a bit most boss. When you're stippling, you need to make sure you really controlled. If you go too quickly, you can always get a little Nike tick effect, which doesn't look so good. So I'm really just taking my time. You can see I'm keeping it quite dense toe where the liners it's starting to blend the line out a little bit too. Okay, this style can take quite a while, so you just have to be patient with it. However, it does create a lovely texture for the shadow. As you can see, when I'm quite far away from the line, the dots are quite sparse. This just adds a nice little texture. As you can see, this style of shadow has a really cool effect, and it's totally worth the time it takes to create it by making the dots more dense near the line and then slowly fading out, it creates this nice, stippled shadow effect looking at all three stars at the same time, you can see how each style brings out the text in a different way and gives it its own personality. Have little play with what you could do with your shadows, perhaps experiment with different colors or different textures of pen as well 12. Adding Highlights: e highlights or another way of making or text stand out on the page for this video I'm going to be using to gel pens. The first is the Unipol sick? No, On the second is the you nibble signal broad. There are so many different kinds of white gel pens out there. However, I found these the most opaque on ink. So where my thinking that highlight normally highlight is where the sun or the light source bounces off, something can gives a nice little reflection. So the easiest way to remember highlight is kind of the opposite to a shadow. So if our light source is coming from this direction, we want the highlight to sit on the left and top side off the stroke her of this time, we're gonna be drawing on top of the letters. So, for example, if the light source is coming from here, I would draw a white line down here, and then you just follow that around for all of your letters. If you want, you could always add a little bit of styling to your highlight so you could add a line and there may be too little lines or here. I'm just gonna add a line and he darts. It's really up to you how you would like your highlights to look and you get really creative with it again. You could even just to use dots and just docked down the letters, or you could use several smaller lines. Just try to remember to always keep it with the top and left. Two week strike. Although I've showed a variety of highlight stars, here is probably best to stick toe one style. So if you want to use dots than I do, stops for every single area of highlight this form of highlight wister, sister Simple Corner highlight. It's slightly more realistic compared to the others. However, the ones, the lines and the dots just add a bit more personality and style. If you're using a light colored in few lettering, you could always go in with a dark color, like a gray or black, and do some dark highlights. Instead. They're not really highlights as such, but it still adding that kind of deck to field to your letters. Have a little play with your highlights, see which stars that you prefer to use. Sometimes it might depend on the shadows you're using as well, or the letters that you have that the most important part is just have fun and experiment. 13. Your Class Project: Now you've learned how to create radiant, using different techniques and how to add shadow and highlight two letters to it's time to bring all of those girls together and create a bright, colorful greetings card. Or your lettering really stands out on the page for this video. I'm going to be using the Bristol board of Cut my Bristol board to a five, and then I folded in half to create a six greetings card. I'm going to be using a range of the pento food, a touch sign pens to create my Grady int, and then I'll be using the car attack Easy, clean color, real brush to add my shadows. However, you're welcome to follow on, but using different brush pens or detail ing pens to create the style that you'd like to create, the message I'm gonna be popping on the card today is thank you. This means that I can experiment with different radiance because of the two words on different typefaces. Well, I also love the fact that there's an ace enders and descend is so I can really play around with the style of the text to start off. I'm gonna take my pink and by purple. And I'm just gonna color some purple on the end of my pink pen. And now I'm just going to write the wet. Thank you. I'm just going to top up the ink onto the pink brush for the you. I'm gonna do a slightly different technique off radiant this time I'm gonna take my lightly and write the word you. - Now I have written the word you in the light blue I'm gonna go over with the dark blue and just add some dark blue to the tops of the letters. - Now I'm just going to take the light blue pen and go in to blend out these please. - Now , I'm just gonna add some shadows using the curator keys. They're clean color, real brush. My light source is coming from the top left hand corner. Now it's time to add a little bit of highlight. Combining radiant shadows and highlights really makes your text stand out on the page and gives your greetings card that little bit of something extra special for the class project . Your aim is to take all the skills that you've learned in this class and combined them together to create a bright, colorful greetings card you can find in the class project description lots of different phrases that I have suggested that he could use for greetings cards. So give it a go. Create a really bright, bold, colorful greetings card. The more colorful the better.
