1. Introduction : Hello, and welcome to this beginners crochet course for left handers. I'm going to teach you the basics of crochet and in the class project, you'll be learning how to make your first piece of crochet, which is a friendship bracelet. You can give that to someone, a friend or family member and you can make it for an adult or a child. First of all, you will need a crochet hook 5 millimeters. And some yarn. It doesn't matter what color, whatever color you like the friendship bracelet to be. This one is made of this one is wool, so it gives a little bit of stretch. I'm going to teach you the basics which are how to make a slip knot and then chaining, which is the basis of all crocheting, really. We'll do those and then I'll show you how to finish the project off to make your completed friendship bracelet. Join me in the course. 2. Getting Started: Equipment Required: Hello. Welcome to this beginner's Crochet course for left handers. I'm going to talk to you first about the equipment you're going to need to start crochet if you haven't got any equipment already. First thing will be crochet hook. You could buy one on its own, or you can get packs of different size crochet hooks. This one is a pack of six, you can only see five in this video. I'll show you the 61 in a moment. The smallest one is this gold one, which is 3 millimeters as you can see, the hook is very small. Then you've got the four millimeter. I'll take them out so you can see the difference. You can see that four millimeter. Five millimeter. That's the one I like to use most of all I'd recommend getting a five millimeter crochet hook, six millimeter, seven, on this one. 8 millimeters. That's for thicker yarns. Maybe if you're making a winter hat or something with a thick yarn, that would be the best one to use for that. I think I've used that for my winter hats that I have made before. And then you need a pair of scissors to cut the yarn, and then you'll need the yarn itself, obviously, and you can get different types of yarn. You can get ones with metallic thread running through them that are really attractive. You can get plain yarns like this one. Bit difficult to show you here. See it's twisted. That one might not be the best one to start with as a beginner because you might get the crochet hook caught in there. You can use a wool, a fineer yarn. The yarns come in different thicknesses. For the first project that we're doing the friendship bracelet, I'd use quite a thin yarn like this, which is wool because it's also got a bit of stretch. Then there's another sparkly yarn there. Join me in the next lesson where I'll show you how to make a slip knot. 3. How To Make A Slip Knot: I'm going to show you how to make a slip knot in this beginner's crochet course for left handers. It forms the basis for any crochet that we're doing so that we can insert the crochet hook. And get chaining, which is what I'll show in the next lesson. I'll take you through this very slowly. Remember, you can watch this video as many times as you need to practice and get the hang of this because it might take a while it did for me, but keep persevering with it. Take the yarn, the loose end in your thumb and forefinger and then with your right thumb and forefinger measure about 4 " and then just loosely, hold those together. I like to use my middle finger and thumb to hold the bottom part of the yarn, and then thumb and index finger to hold the loose part of the yarn. This has got some movement. Then we're going to insert forefinger, middle finger, and thumb and twist once, then with your thumb and forefinger of your right hand, grab this, the loose end and hold onto it tightly with forefinger on your left hand whilst pulling through with your right and that will form the slip knot, which can then tighten up by holding it with thumb and forefinger of the right hand on the knot and thumb, forefinger of the left hand to pull like so. Then you've got your slip knot ready for inserting your crochet hook. And if you want to undo it, if it's gone wrong, just take the two ends and pull them away from each other and it will come undone. Join me in the next lesson where I'll be showing you how to chain and that will make the friendship bracelet. Keep practicing with that until you get it and can do it without really thinking. 4. How To Make Your First Chain & Friendship Bracelet Project!: Welcome back to this beginner's crochet course for left handers. We've done the slip knot, so I hope you've been practicing that. Well done, if you've got the hang of it, it's not easy if you've never done crochet before. We've got the five millimeter crochet hook and our slip knot. I want to say that this piece in the middle where it says 5 millimeters, you can use that as a guide for the size of each chain when you're chaining. Try to maintain that and that will give you an even chain. What first of all, I'd like to mention is holding this loose part of the yarn to keep the project going, keep it stable. Do that with your thumb, middle finger, ring finger. And that will keep it in place and then we're using the index finger to hold the yarn upwards, and this is what we're going to do to make the chain and it's called yarning over. You get the crochet hook in this position, go behind the yarn, and then as you pull it towards you, you twist it, and then you are aiming to go through the loop that we've made. That's called yarning over. I've done that once now, I'll show you again. So yarning over, turning the crochet hook towards you, inserting the crochet hook into the loop, the chain. There you go. We've got two chain. Now we've got a little bit on the chain. We can hold that, as I mentioned before, with thumb, middle finger, and forefinger. We can tighten it up a bit if we want to by just pulling our index finger up a bit. Make sure you've got plenty unrolled from the ball of yarn as well so you can keep going and we're going to chain around 20 to 25, I'd say 20 would be a good size for a friendship bracelet for a child, maybe 25, 30 for an adult. It depends on the size of the person's wrist. Experiment with that, but for this course, I'll just do 20 to show you. If you want to count how many you've done, you can just count it through the loops there. If you've got one, two, if you lose track, we try to count as you go holding the chain. I'll be quiet as I do this. Might just count. Three, four, five, six. If you lose the thread with your finger, just pick it up again or if the crochet hook accidentally comes out, just put it through. If the yarn is a bit like this woolen and got threads within it, make sure you go through the whole way through the loop. How many have we done now? We've done one, two, three, four, five, six, we're going to do 27, eight, nine, ten. No, I haven't unrolled my yarn enough. So it's starting to become a problem, so that's nine, so I've loosened undone it a bit more. 910. 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17. So remembering to yarn over and pull through 18, 19, 20. As you can see, this section here, this chain here, I went a bit too loose and it doesn't look the same. So if you wanted to do that, just undo it. As I demonstrated, it's the same as with the slip knot, you can just pull it and it comes undone. Then when you're ready to go again, you just insert the crochet hook and start from where you left off, holding the chain and then yarning over as before. Join me in the next video where I'll show you how to finish the friendship bracelet and how to share your project. 5. Finishing Your Course Project: Friendship Bracelet: Welcome back to this beginner's crochet course for left handers. We've chained 20 on our first chain. If our friendship braced it. I'll show you what we need to do to finish it off. You would have the crochet hook in steel, so I'll put that back in. Then what we need to do is take a pair of scissors, and what I would recommend is cutting off the same amount as you've got at the start of the friendship bracelet, start of the chain because we can use that to tie the ends of the friendship bracelet together on the wrist. Measure it if you want to be exact or just do an estimate and then snip that with the scissors. And then it's very simple to do to finish it off. All you do is use your crochet hook to pull the end of the yarn through and then pull it tight and that finishes it nicely and securely. You've got your friendship bracelet. They have it. Then you can tie this together. I would say this one is for a small child. Maybe it depends. It depends if you want the crochet to go all the way around. I did 20, so you could experiment with 30 chain using the same technique to make it bigger. Or just see, I've got quite small wrists, so I'll model it for you. And then you can for me, you can just tie it together using those two bits with a bow, and then you've got your lovely friendship bracelet. You can make them for friends and family, maybe give them away, leave them places a random act of kindness for people to find. That's the project for this course is to make your first piece of crochet, a friendship bracelet that you can give to someone either someone special in your life, you can make it for yourself, or you could leave it somewhere as a random act of kindness for somebody to find maybe with a sweet little note. I'd love to hear what you do with your friendship bracelets. So please put that in the class assignment as your project, upload a photograph of your completed friendship bracelet. What size you made it, how many chain you used, and maybe if you wanted to share who you gave it to, whether that was a loved one, friend, family member, yourself, or leaving it somewhere. As a random act of kindness for someone to find with a sweet note, letting them know they're not alone in the world. We all need kindness in the world. I hope that you have enjoyed this course. Looking forward to seeing your class projects when you upload them. I have more crochet to share and more creative courses to share. Thanks for joining me today. Bye. 6. Course Conclusion: The finished friendship bracelet that I made. So just to recap, this was 20 chain, leaving a couple of inches of yarn, both at the beginning and end to be able to tight with the bow on the person's wrist. So I hope you've enjoyed the course. Remember to do the class project, which is in the course and share photos of the friendship bracelets that you've made. They don't have to be modeled by the person you've given them to, that's not necessary at all. Just take a picture like I've done for the course photo of the friendship bracelet and if you'd like to share. More information on who you gave it to and how you enjoyed making this first project, how you found it. That would be interesting to know as well. Thank you for joining me and I hope you'll join me for more classes and courses in the future. Remember, you can re watch these videos as often as you need to following along, playing it again, and as with learning anything new, remember, it does take time to get the hang of it. You've got to become nimble with your fingers, get used to moving the crochet hook and holding the yarn in place, might slip and slide a bit. The hook might come away from the loop. Just keep trying and persevering and you'll find that you'll get there in the end. So I hope that that will encourage you to keep going. I taught myself crochet, so I think you can do it to buy a using these online resources. Keep practicing and once you've made your first friendship bracelet, maybe you'd like to make more have that as a little regular project that you want to do to keep practicing until you're ready to then learn some more crochet really get that solid foundation of learning how to chain and make this friendship bracelet for friends and family and loved ones and maybe leaving it somewhere as a random act of kindness as well. That would be nice to do. Remember to keep practicing regularly. If it goes wrong, just undo it. Don't worry, try again, keep watching the videos. Don't worry how many times you've got to re watch them. Just follow step by step until it's coming together and it will come together eventually, I hope and you'll be able to see your progress of making your first little project. Good luck. Let me know how you get on. Bye.
