1. Introduction: Hi, and happy new year. My name is [inaudible] and watercolor artist and illustrator. Welcome to my water color channel. Here you'll find a big collection of classes for beginners. In today's class, I want to share with you art trends for this and next year. Also, I'll teach you how to apply those trends to watercolor artwork. All my classes are filmed in [inaudible] so you can follow along. If you're new to this channel, welcome and thank you for joining. There's a follow button on top and let's get started.
2. Supplies: If today you are going to paint with me, besides just listening for information about the trends, and I hope you will be painting with me. You'll need following supplies. Your set of watercolor paint, a water paint pallete, paper towel, your favorite brush, a medium one, and the small brush. Also a pencil, a compass, and a ruler. Also, I need watercolor paper. But I suggest if you have sketchbook where you keep all your ideas. That would be the best. If you don't have a sketchbook, maybe you're thinking about starting one. It's a beginning of the year, so it's a good time to start something. You often ask me about the paint, what brand I use, what colors I use. I will add the attachment to the project section of the class with the entire information about the paint. The brushes I am using today, Escoda number two, a travel brush, and a medium brush number four. Let's get started.
3. Trend 1: The very first trend is my favorite trend of this, and next year is globalization. It's been going all ready for few years. This year, and for next year, it's called by trend experts, Oriental Express. It's suggesting us to get inspired by the cultures and the art of the countries from the east. For example, I would suggest you to look into textiles of China. I have a book here, or Japan. A nice source of inspiration are Persian rugs, Kashan rugs, and also Turkey designs or ornaments. If you're looking for something more sophisticated, or minimalistic, I would suggest you to turn for ideas to Japanese art, to Japanese ink painting, Japanese prints, and Japanese color schemes. Especially because Japan is hosting next Olympics, it's going to be a huge influence. You can see in these artwork, I used some of the florals which are inspired by Indian ornaments. For our practice, I thought we can paint a very popular, a Paisley design. Paisleys have been popular for years. Now they're returning back. In watercolor, they'll look even more modern or contemporary and will be more on-demand. You can use any colors you like. I'll start with the blue and then we'll see how they're doing. I'm mixing some teal with bright and blue and with violet. What I did here, I just drew the outline or the Paisley with pencil. You can now draw the entire design before you start painting it. But I thought this would be more interesting. What I'm doing next, I'm doing this outline into this tiny brush strokes in blue. I'll try to do it more painterly, so it'll be faster. But you can do it as detailed as you like and take your time. Paisley designs have so many variations. Depending on the color scheme you are using, they can be they a bride and bold, or they can be more subtle, and more sophisticated. They could be monochromatic. Watercolor gives them this contemporary, very interesting moral look, because of the texture of watercolor, of it's lightness, freshness. Of course, I could do the entire line, but I think it looks more interesting, plus you're more in control, if you're doing brush stroke line. Now, when we have a shape, we can start drawing something interesting inside. Usually, it's a tear dropped shape inside of a paisley shape, or it can be a circle like a mandolin style, it could be a flower, or it could be multiple flowers. We need like one being designed here in the middle, and then from there we'll go with some flourishes. Let's take some purple, add to it a little bit of magenta, and a lot of water. Add some lines right here, like two leaves. After you have a shape of the Paisley, it's really up to you, what else to add. As I suggested, look at the designs. Especially the vintage designs, if you find some contemporary artist Paisley designs, please do not copy them. It's always more interesting to come up with your designs, anyway. Just then catch the fill, and the character of the Paisley, in general, and then create your own design. We've got some leaves. We'll add more details later. Next, let's paint the flower, silver flower. You'll use some magenta. We mix it with some cadmium orange. It needs more orange. Again, this is a very simplified design. You can do it as complex as you like. But for the sake of this class, I just want to show you the principle of painting a Paisley. You can create entire pottery paisleys, or you can just add them to some of your designs, as supporter elements, or decorative details. Don't forget about your paper towel. Use it when you need it. At some point we, can switch just smaller brush for smaller details. Let's add some intricate details here. Most of the trans for this year are all of about details. Attention to detail is very important, and they like it. Beautiful blue leaves. We have to fill the entire shape with flourishes, flowers, circles, dots, everything what we can find in Oriental designs. Some brush strokes between the leaves. Just be playful and add the details you like. Oriental designs can be very colorful and bold, but you don't have to do them like that. Especially, if you're working on contemporary design, you can use less colors and limited color palette, and it'll instantly make it more modern. Let's watch what we're doing now. I'm taking some classic green and mixing some teal to it. We have a rich beautiful green as a result. Now let's make some stems and flowers going to this part of the Paisley. Again, be playful of it. Don't be afraid. It'll have a little leaf here, add more leaves on the sides. Why not? Because of color head, our Paisley looks pretty contemporary, fresh and because of watercolor textures as well. Here we're going to have some other flowers. Here, by accident, I mixed some green in my pink. It looks a little muted. But it's okay. Painting paisleys is very fun and it's a nice brush control exercise too. I feel like we need some gold or some yellow. Let's take some naples. Naples yellow and add some more details. A little petal here. For now, you can just repeat after me, and later, your assignment is to create your own Paisley, your very own Paisley design, and share it in the project section of the class. Here we need some faint pink too to balance the composition. I think we need some more of blue because this turned into the pink and green only. I'm mixing some more beautiful blue, and let's add some flourishes, some dots, some brushstrokes, whichever you feel. Here, you can add some more details like flourishes or twirls. These here can be small, like these, or they can be big like here. If you have more paisleys in your design, you can also add a stem, like they're flowers, and some more leaves. This is our practice for globalization trend, and we have painted a Paisley inspired by Oriental art.
4. Trend 2: So next thing which inspired designers, fashion designers, and transfer clusters for next two years is porcelain designs. For inspiration, I suggest you look into URL, China Cabinet, and find your favorite teapots, teacups, or your favorite plates from your grandparents, maybe. Or if you don't have any antique plates, you can go to a museum and find some inspiration there or you can also look on the museum websites. How to make those designs yours and not to copy them totally is just look at your plate or a teacup, and find the elements which you really really like, and take just fragments of those elements, and try to paint them in watercolor, like I did here in my sketchbook. Just paint them in your sketchbook, and let them stay until you come back to them and they'll make you inspired for your next design. For practice, for a B strand, I chose a plate from our set. As I suggested to you to look for something which you really like instead of copying the entire design. I like this bird here and these branches. What you'll do next, we'll just take a watercolor brush, a piece of paper, and we'll try to paint it freehand without using any pencil or sketches before. In this way, it will be our hand, and it will make it our own. So I'm taking the medium size brush. Once again, I'm mixing some blue because blue is my favorite color. You can take any favorite color you like and if you can just grab a plate from your own collection. I'm always starting from a head. Don't try to be too precise, just have fun with it. It may not look great first but it's okay. Just try to express of a feel of a brushstrokes as you see and to understand why did you like that part. Maybe you don't like a bird, maybe you liked the flowers or maybe you have a plate with dragons or any other different plates you liked. Usually I would do this in my sketchbook. However, I picked a [inaudible] four months and you can see better what I'm doing. As you can see some trembling hand line so we going to fix it. While you're doing this, you will understand the parts you really like and the parts you would want to change. This is a great exercise to try to understand what you like and develop your own style. This is such a big trend now. I saw fashion designers turned porcelain inspired designs into dresses. It's beautiful. Of course, you don't have to make it white and blue. It can be any color you like. It could be colorful. Doesn't have to be monochrome. Just try to understand how was it painted and practice the brush strokes. This could be more pretty. Now let's paint the branches. What you notice in porcelain designs is that everything is like flowing, and it's very delicate, and its such a nice harmony of composition. That's the important part we have to get from this brand to make everything flowing in a composition. We have these berries, which are big for a bird but they work. Once again, the watercolor gives it such a fresh contemporary feel. It doesn't feel like an antique plate anymore. It's not likened to [inaudible]. I'm not sure if this plate is antique or it just used 19th-century design. So very simple. Instead of pencil just use your brush and paint elements from your favorite plate, or teacup or teapot, you like. That's your assignment and after that uploaded it to project section of the class.
5. Trend 3: For flowers and plants trend next and following year are on trend. Botanical illustrations are pressed flowers, vintage flowers, and also organized flower trends. We'll be exploring more botanical illustrations in future classes. Today I want us to explore how we can organize the flowers into a composition, and so they're trending and there are different ways to do it. One of our strand is to arrange our flower illustration in a mandala. What we'll do we'll just make a circle and then divided by six. In this organized flowers strand or organized planned strands, you can arrange them in a line. You can arrange them in grind or diagonally. You can apply this trend to fruits too. It's important to leave some distance, and you can see every single flower as separately. We have divided into circle in six. Mandala is a beautiful way to arrange flowers. They don't have to be all the same, you can have different flowers, but it's important for them to be equally distance between each other. For now, I'm leaving pencil lines. If you're doing quick or art work or frame, I'd suggest you should draw the flowers in detail and then erase all extra lines. But today we're just playing with trends, exploring them. We'll just have fun and paint flowers, one in the middle and around, and we'll have some branches or leaves in between. Let's take some naples yellow, we have a little bit of golden orange. In the middle let's take some pink. You don't have to do the mandala a shape, you can do a grind. Just take a ruler and make a grind and decide which flowers you'll have in the grind, which branches, it could be pine cone to or seed pods. We have one flower in the middle, it's nice and some on dot. Next we'll have smaller flowers around. Let's have some violet [inaudible] some spring. Just some violet around, just three and then I have three more spaces. I think for those three we'll do butter cups. I just took some yellow. Again, naples yellow for golden orange. For inspiration for this trend, look into pressed flowers. Maybe you'll press your own flowers. Will start I think like a pressed flowers sketchbook, it's a great idea too. It's always nice to have your own references. I know so many of you love nature, so just get outside and pick some flowers and make your own mandala may be for inspiration in spring I me. Just be creative, it's the most important part to be creative. Now we are doing go the leaves or stems or whatever we decide. It could be like some branches with some seeds on them. Something like this. Very delicate, very beautiful. For this illustrations, it's nice to also use trending color stories. I'll be sharing trending color stories for each season again this year. If you want to change the colors for a flower seeds, okay, it doesn't have to be realistic. Could be any flower you like. Come up with your own flowers, you can get inspired by some oriental designs or porcelain designs. Why not? Could be also very realistic flowers, water flowers with ink and water colors or any other techniques. Plus this trends you can apply them to other media too. Just turn the peach any way your are comfortable and have fun with this. Another one of very detailed and sophisticated trends. Next I want to use some blue. Now let's use some other shade of green. You take some yellowish green, you'll mix it with blue. Here we'll have bigger leaves. I can understand why this trend is so popular. It has some feel of calmness, of peacefulness. It's very nice to work on it too. Here you can have a smaller leaves too or another branch. Keep painting until you are happy with your result. What about assignment of this trend? To practice it, I suggest pick three kind of flowers, and three kind of leaves, and paint your own organized flowers. Could be mandala, could be a grind. Could be just a line or a diagonal line. Could be even a triangle if you want to. Could be just to a circle. Explore different, different ways of composition. Later this year, I'll be teaching botanical illustration class. It's another way of organizing flowers too. Now we have just to add some yellow to some of our violet. If you want, you can add more texture. I like my mandala as it is, and this the trend for organized flowers.
6. Trend 4: Next trend I noticed for the next two years, are raw fruits and vegetables in a painterly style and in bold, beautiful colors. You can see them on the prints, you can see them in the patterns, you can see them on foreign furniture and fashion design that could change. They are very trendy. It is a nice skill to have to paint some bold, painterly fruits or vegetables. It is important to live some distance between them while you will be painting them. So for our practice, let's paint quickly a dragon fruit. Take a magenta and a lot of water and then we'll paint the shape of a fruit. Very wide. Then we'll take some classic green. Let us add some teal. Just a little bit teal. While it is still wet, just add the leafs. You can see how the green is mixing into the magenta and it is beautiful. Think of the fruits that you like or vegetables and it's preferable that they should be in bold, beautiful colors. Next let us take something gray with not too much water. [inaudible] we see it. [inaudible] Nice. With the same colors we can paint radish. Just to practice. Take magenta. Paint a half of radish. Then wash the brush and just add water. Finish the shape of a radish. You can see will water will be able to go into the radish shape. Let us take some green and paint some leaves, including some [inaudible] here. With big brush strokes. Don't be afraid. So you can now create a print and just frame that. You can a painting you can frame it too. You can create some cards, recipe cards or a pattern and [inaudible] some painterly frauds or gauges. It will be beautiful and you will be enchanted. For your assignment, just pick fruits and vegetables you like, and paint them in a free painterly style. I am planning to have a class on painterly this summer so there will be painting more fruits in a painterly style.
7. Trend 5: Next round for 2020/2021 is illustrative lettering and for inspiration, I suggest you to look into vintage posters, vintage labels, into Art Nouveau style for flourishes. It's very important to create beautiful details when you are using this trend. We will get more in depth into Valentine's card class next month with this trend, and for now I want us just to paint for a one letter and see how we can add some sophistication, some illustrative elements to it. Let's take some and green with a little bit of turner. What I do is I just printed a letter and outlined it on the paper and now freehand I'll be adding some flourishes while I'm coloring it. Also family crest and [inaudible] could be a nice inspiration for this trend too. Some elements I want to just leave simple like this part and not just to color. You can add different colors too. If you like gold or silver, you can add them too on this trend. They'll look really good. Here, I want to leave one line, let's just hope I'll make it straight. If you like this strand you can come up with designs for an entire alphabet. Make it as a art challenge to create beautiful watercolor alphabet. Next, let's take a smaller brush and create more delicate details. Which ever you feel like. Let's connect this two. Maybe another flower coming from here. I think we need some more here. A little bit showing up here. Why not? Make it more interesting. This is one example how you can transform a simple letter into more decorative and illustrative letter, which is on trend now. You can make entire words like these or just letters, or monograms. Pick a letter you like and add some flourishes to it and show it in the project section of a class.
8. Color of the Year: Also in these cintrios class, I wanted to share with you how to mix the color over here. The color over here is classic blue, this here. However, I suggest you not to take just a plain blue from your palette and instead try to mix some violet wave teal. As a result, you'll get a cheap, beautiful blue with different shades in it. This is a beautiful blue you can use with here. In the winter trends, I showed you a lot of combinations with blue, and today I just want to share with you a couple once which are like the most. For sophisticated look, combine these blue with peach. For peach mix some cadmium orange with magenta, and dilute it with a lot of water. You can see how beautiful it looks next to this blue. Another nice color which goes well with these blue is some lavender. So let's take some violet drop from magenta and dilute it with a lot of water. Another color which looks great with is blue is mustard yellow. So we'll take golden orange, with cadmium yellow and a drop of yellowish green. It needs a little more golden orange. Beautiful. Of course you can always use just monochromatic scheme, and I used different shades of this blue just by adding water to it. So classic blue is the color of this year. I hope you'll use it.
