1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi, friends. How are you? I hope you're having a great day today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and painting project that I designed, especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful with this project. I will guide students step by step through all the steps that they need to take. Today, we are going to be creating this cool jungle Tiger. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a sheet of thick white paper. You will need some paints. I'm going to be using some tempera paint, but you can also use either acrylic or poster paints. You will need the color black for the outline. And then I am going to be using red, white, green, yellow and orange. You do not need these exact colors. Just use what you have available to you. You can use some water if you like. This is optional. Sometimes I use water to clean out my paint brushes, and sometimes I just use my paper towel. So it's up to you if you'd like to use the water. You will also need a pencil with an eraser and two different sized paint brushes. You'll need a larger paint brush for the bigger spaces and a smaller paint brush for the outlines and the smaller spaces. You will need a paper towel, and also you'll need something to hold your paint. So we need a little paint palette. I like to use a small paper plate. So go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials, and I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw a Tiger: In this step, we are going to draw our tiger design. So let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is pick up our pencil. We're going to come down maybe about 6 " from the top. That would be maybe nine or 10 centimeters from the top. And right here in the middle, we're going to make a short curved line like this. This is going to be the top of our tiger's head. Now we're going to make the ears on either side of this line. So Tigers have relatively pointy ears, so we're going to make two slanted lines, one coming up and one coming down. There we go. So here we have the top of the head, and then we have the ears. Now let's make some of that fur on the side of their heads, and it's going to be a little bit fluffy, so we're going to make a curve line coming down, touching that ear, coming in, coming down, coming back in, coming down. We're going to stop about right there. Now we're going to do the same thing on the other side. So slightly curved line, come in a little. Another curve line, come in, another curve line, and then we're going to stop about right there. Now let's turn our attention to the face of our tiger. We're going to make two eyes, and they're going to be a little bit slanted like cat eyes are. So we're going to start here in the middle, come down to about right here, and then right here. Those are going to be our guide dots for our eyes. So let's start with this eye right here. Let's make a line, a curve line from that dot. Like this, and then we're going to close that eye up. Like that. That's our first cat eye. Now let's make another cat eye here, starting at that dot. And then close that up. If they're not exactly the same, that's okay. Now what we're going to do is we're going to create an iris inside that eye. So curve line, curve line, same on this eye, another curve line here, and then we're going to make a pupil, which is just going to be a straight line down the middle of that circle that we just made for the iris. Now, from here, we're going to make the nose, so we're going to come down from the eyes. We're going to make a straight line coming down on either side, and then we're going to close that space up. Underneath this, we're going to make a small triangle that's going to be the nose of our tiger. And then down here underneath the nose, we're going to make the mouth. So straight line. And then we're going to make another straight line. That goes right through that initial first line coming down. This is going to be the mouth. Going to double that up a little bit like this. At a little bit of extra darkness, a little bit of extra paint right there. Now we're going to come back here underneath the eyes, and we're not going to touch the eye, but we're going to make a curve line coming down almost to touch the mouth, but not quite. Do the same thing on this side. And then we're going to make a jaw right here at the bottom underneath the mouth, so curve around and then curve back up. So now you can probably see the tiger's face coming together. My tigers a little bit tilting the head a little bit, so just so you know that yours might look a little bit different from mine. Now that we have the jaw set, what we can do is we can come in and we can attach this curve line to the jaw and the same thing on this side. There we go. Now let's make the body, which is down here, going to just make a curve line. This is more of a portrait, so we're not going to be able to see the whole entire body. And then another curve line right here. Now, let's come back up and let's create some whiskers. So I'm going to have some whiskers coming here. They're just going to be pretty short. If you'd like to make yours a little bit longer, go ahead and do that. Now, what makes a tiger a tiger are the stripes, right? So let's create some stripes. I'm going to make some stripes up here on the forehead. So maybe two strips here, and then two stripes on this side. And then I'm going to come down here to the body, and I'm going to make some more stripes coming down from the edge of the body like this. But of course, this is your artwork, so you can make your stripes any which way you can make more triangle stripes if you'd like. It's completely up to you. Light make one more stripe here. Go ahead and take a look at your tiger portrait, and if you see anything else that you'd like to add, you can go ahead and do that. I think I'm going to add a little bit more detail to my ears. I'm just looking at them and they look a little bit plain. Remember, we need to make sure that we keep it simple because if you add a lot of details, sometimes those details are going to be covered up with the paint, so we need to make sure that the lines are very clean and simple. Alright. Go ahead and add anything else that you like to your tiger design. I think I'm finished. I'm really happy with the way that my tiger looks. So in the next step, we are going to come back, and we are going to apply some black paint to our pencil lines. 3. Step 2: Outline the Tiger Design with Black Paint: In this step, we are going to apply some black paint to our pencil lines. So let's get started. I'm going to use my smaller paint brush because I want my lines to be pretty thin. I'm going to remember to keep my paint brush more vertical straight up and down as possible so that my line is pretty thin. If I go like this and I paint like this, then my line will not be as thin. Okay. So I already have some paint here on my paper plate, and you need to remember you only need a small amount of paint. It's a lot easier to pour more paint onto your piece of paper than it is to put your paint back into the bottle. So we want to make sure that we don't waste paint, and you just need to use what you have. So what we're going to do is we are going to start by loading our paint brush, and we're going to start at the top. Of our drawing, and then we're going to move our way down. And the reason why we're doing it that way is because if you started here at the nose or mouth, you might set your hand into your paint, and then it will smear all over the place. So I do encourage my students to start closer to the top of your piece of paper. That way, the chance of smearing is less likely. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to just slowly and carefully cover all of those pencil lines and I'm going to speed up this video, and you can watch me, and I'll see you back here in just a minute. Alrighty friends, I'm finished painting my outline. I'm finished covering my pencil lines with my black paint. And what you can do at this point is you can use your handy dandy paper towel to take some of that paint off of your paint brush. And then if you would like to use ear water, you can go ahead and use that. I like to take a lot of my paint off with my off of my paint brush with my paper towel. That way, my water doesn't get super dirty and black, especially with the black cause the black is a very powerful color. So I'm going to dry that. And the reason why I'm going to dry it is because I don't want the water to get into my other paint because then it will become very runny. Alright. What we're going to do now, and this is a really important step, what we're going to do now is we are going to allow this painting to dry completely before we start with the next step, which is adding some paint to our design. If we added paint to our design right now and the black paint is still wet, it will smear and smudge around into the colorful paint. So we want to make sure that we allow this enough time to dry. So after your painting is dry, I will see you in the next video. 4. Step 3: Paint the Design: In this step, we are going to paint our tiger design. So let's get started. As you can see, I've already put my paint onto my palette, and I use just a small amount for the red and the yellow because I'm going to use a little bit of the red plus the white for the nose. And then with the yellow, I'm going to put a little bit of yellow for the eyes because I know that tigers have that yellowish greenish eye. So and then I have some green for the background, and then some white that I'm going to mix with that green. And then I also have some orange for the tiger, and I'm also going to mix that with a little bit of white. So that's all of my colors that I have on my palette, and I'm going to put these paints back over here. So they're out of the way. There we go. And if you feel like you want to use your water to do some cleaning of your brushes, you can go ahead and do that. Sometimes I just wipe my brushes off on the handy dandy paper towel to clean them. And I don't worry about using the water at all, but sometimes I do use the water. Water's there in case you do want to use it. Okay? The one thing that I'd like to caution you with though, if you do use the water, make sure that before you use a different color, you dry all of the water off of your paint brush so that the water doesn't get into the paint because the paint will get too wet. Okay? So I have my two paint brushes here. One's a little bit larger and one's a little bit smaller. So for the smaller areas like the nose and the eyes, I'm going to use the smaller paint brush, and for the larger areas, I will be using the larger paint brush. So you might see me switching off between the two paint brushes. Alright? Alright, so let's get started. I'm going to start with the eyes, and then I'm going to move to the nose, and then I'm going to paint the actual tiger. And then on the next step in the next video, then we will do the background. Alright? So I'm going to get started on the eyes, and I'm going to use a combination of the green and the white, and then I'm going to also add a little bit of yellow to the mix. So let me add a little bit of yellow. Oh, that's nice. You will get some of the paint onto the black, and that's okay. Just do the best that you can on that. It's hard to keep it off of the black completely. Just do the best that you can. Now that I have the eyes painted, I'm going to move to the nose, a little bit of white and a tiny bit of red, and that's going to make pink. So a little pink nose. And then I'm going to wipe that off onto my handy dandy paper towel rinse it. Make sure that waters off before I use the next color. So the next color I'm going to be using is orange with a little bit of white, and I'm going to be using my larger pabush and going to just double load, which means I'm going to dip in the white, and I'm also going to dip into the orange. Then I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to just speed up this video and I will see you back here in just a minute. Thank you Alrighty friends, I'm finished painting the actual tiger. I really like how it turned out. I decided to use a little bit of pink on the inside of the ears, and I want you to know that it's okay if the pink gets a little bit on the black line, the outline, that's okay. That happens to me, as well. I like the look of that. So I hope that you do, as well. When we come back, we will start painting the background. 5. Step 4: Paint the Background: A In this step, we are going to paint the background. So let's get started. I'm going to use a combination of green and white. And what I'm going to do is I am going to double load my larger paint brush, make sure all that water gets off of there. Double load the paint brush with my white and my green because I want there to be a mixture of white and green. I don't want the background to be too dark. So I'm not going to blend in the colors very much. I'm just going to let there be some separation between the green and the white. And I'm going to speed up this video so you can watch me. Alrighty friends, I'm finished painting my tiger portrait design, and I really like the way that it turned out. I hope that you had a lot of fun with this project, and I will see you next time. I
