Before we get started, let's talk a little bit about the class project. Your class project is to design and create a Xen that communicates a personal interest. There are countless teams you can explore in an art journal, dean, but I recommend that you pick a topic that really interests you. Encourage you to share your project so we can all see and learn from each other. In the next class, we will talk about materials. 3. Materials: The materials you'll need to create an art journaling Xen will really depend on what kind of style and type of art journaling that you're planning to include. Here are some basic materials to consider. You'll need paper for your xin pages. There are many types of papers out there. You could include printer paper, sketch paper, watercolor paper. The main thing to consider is the art medium you're going to be using. If it's gonna be water-based, you will need to use a heavy set paper. You can also use pages out of a magazine. Be creative, See what you have lying around the house that you could repurpose. You'll also need a good pair of scissors. If you're planning to collage, you will need something to glue or tape your art into your xin. The next thing you need to decide is on the medium that you're gonna be using. For this class. I'll be using gouache. Since I'm using gouache, I'll be using some watercolor brushes. Also need some water. You'll need a paper towel or a rag as well. You'll need something to write or draw with, such as pens, pencils, markers, or paint brushes. Consider the type of media you want to use and the level of detail that you're aiming for. Here are some of the writing utensils I'll be using. You can add extra visual interest to your dean with decorative elements such as washi, tape, stamps or stencils. Now that you have all your material, Let's move on to finding out what a is. 4. What Is A Zine: So what are the genes? As a self-published, small circulation publication that is typically produced on photocopiers or in small print month. Means emerged in the 1930s as a way for science fiction fans to communicate and share their love of the genre. In the 1970s, the punk rock movement in briefings as a way to disseminate ideas. Scenes are often created by individuals or small groups who have a passion for a particular topic or issue. They can cover a wide range of subjects including art, music, politics, poetry, personal stories, and more. Z's are usually distributed independently, often through alternative bookstore, it's record stores, or by mail order. One of the defining characteristics of deans are there DIY aesthetic. There are often handmade with photocopied pages, handwritten texts and collages or artwork, or medium for self-expression and creativity. And they offer a platform for voices that might otherwise go unheard in the mainstream media. In the next lesson, we'll learn how to plan as dean. 5. Planning A Zine: Themes can have a variety of layouts depending on the creators preference and the content of the theme. Here are some commonly asked for them. These are just a few examples of the common layout, but the possibilities are endless. For the first layout, folder page in half. Next, you'll want to fold it again. Just make sure that the edges of the pages lineup fold the pages again. This time towards the center line. You should end up with a page that has four equal quarters. Next you want to open up the page and folded half, right where the central line is. Grab your scissors and cut right in the middle. Now you want to do is open the page back up again and lay it down. Squeeze the center of the pages together, and flatten it. You should end up with a small booklet with eight pages. Another option is using magazine paper instead of cartridge paper. This allows you to be a little bit more creative with your pages. Once you find your page, you wanna rip it out. I like to cut the edges, but it's up to you. Now you just want to fold. It's gonna be the same exact folds as we did in option one. Option three, you're going to make the same exact folds, except you're going to make an additional cut at the end. Next chart, folding the pages like an accordion. This gives you a booklet with more pages. Option four is gonna be the most basic layout for the genes. What you wanna do is cut the pages in half and then cut them again. So you're basically cutting them into quarters. Stock the pages up to make a booklet. Finally, you want to staple the pages together to make a booklet. Here are some other options to make this mean. Another thing you want to do is plan out using. There are countless themes you can explore it in an art journaling seen, here are some ideas to get you started. You can write about self-care and mental health. Use your dean as a space to reflect on unexplored practices and resources for self-care and mental health. Another team can be social justice and activism. Created Xen that amplifies social justice issues and promotes activism. Highlighting causes such as climate change, human rights, and racial justice can create a scene that calibrates music and art, featuring album reviews, artists profiles and interviews. Travel and adventure is also a popular theme. You could document your travel experiences and the dean featuring sketches, photographs, and journal entries. You could also do food and cooking. Share your favorite recipes, culinary experiences, and featuring illustrations and photos. Use your Xen as a space to share a personal stories and memoirs. You could feature writing, illustrations and photographs as well. Pop culture and fandom are also important teams and themes. You could create one that celebrate your favorite pop culture fandom, featuring Fan Art reviews and interviews, explore the natural world and environmental issues. And Azim as well featured some photographs that you took, some illustrations and reflections. Remember, these are just a few ideas to get you started. The beauty of Z making is that you can explore anything that interests you and create a unique and personal Xen that reflects your own perspective and experiences. You can get more ideas by attending a workshop on scene making. There are many options available. Some places where you can go and look for Xen workshops are at your local library. Many libraries offers in making workshops and events for people of all ages. You can also check them out or community centers. Some art schools and studios may offer Azim making classes as well, and some workshops as part of their curriculum. The inference and festivals have become popular. And if you look for one in your area, you might have some ideas when you come back home. Online workshops are a great way to find ideas as well. Attending Azim making workshop can be a great way to learn new techniques, connect with other the makers, and get inspired to create your own genes. Once I picked a theme for my scene, what I'm gonna do is try to do a mock layout. I start by numbering the pages just so I'll know where each Xen goals. You can start at any order that you want. But I usually start with the cover page. Once I'm done planning out my theme, I'm ready to move on. The next lesson. We'll learn about making ethylene. 6. Making A Zine: Finally here. So let's start making a Xen for my theme. Since I'm gonna be using quash, I'll use some watercolor paper. I'm going to start folding it the same way as option one. You can go back to the previous lesson to see how we fold this. Once I get my supplies ready, I tried to tape off the sides of the pages, especially since it's a water-based medium. Next, I start sketching out very lightly. I erase out the dark lines. Now it's time to color. I used to watercolor brush to lightly cover the page with a film of water. I'm leaving the outline of the girl untouched. This is so when I color in the background, the paint doesn't bleed into the outline. You could also use masking fluid, but this is an easier way. With the background dry. I'm going to start filling in the outfit of the girl. The reason you want to make sure the background is dry so the colors don't bleed in with each other. Next, I'm going to fill in the face using a smaller watercolor brush. I'm going to start adding in leaves using a detailed brush and some black wash. I'm going to add in the details of the face. Use a red gouache for the lips. Wants the Red Cross is completely dry. I go back in with the detail brush and some white gouache to add in, some buttons and a leaf color. I continue adding details until I feel like the piece is finished. Using a detailed brush, I added some letters. I continue the same process in each of the scenes. Once you're done with the Xen, you could either photocopy it or just folded up and keep it for yourself. The photocopies can be shared with friends or family or even strangers. See how many you can make. 7. Conclusion: Hello guys. I hope you enjoyed the class and learn some things along the way. The genes are a powerful and unique way to express yourself and connect with others. Whether you're looking to explore new hobby or connect with people that are like-minded. Offer an opportunity to express yourself in a very meaningful and impactful way. Please be sure to post your project and see you next time.
