1. Introduction to This Project and Supplies You Will Need: Hi, friends. How are you? I hope you're having a really great day today. I'd like to introduce you to this project. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that was designed, especially for kids. You do not need any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful with this project. I will teach you step by step, all of the steps that you need to take to be successful with this project. I'd like to go over the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a piece of watercolor paper. You will need some watercolor paints. You will need a paintbrush. I'd like to use a paint brush that's this size. But if you have a different size paintbrush, that's okay. Just go ahead and use that. You will need a bowl or a cup of clean water. You will need some oil pastels or some crayons. It's up to you. The colors that you'll need are red, green and black, and then some colors of your choice. I chose a light blue and a light orange. But you can choose whatever other colors that you'd like besides the green and the red and the black because those three colors we're going to be using for the watermelon. Then you will need a paper towel to keep your spills under control and then a mat to go under your work space. You keep it nice and tidy and clean. Go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials, and I'll see you back here in just a minute. 2. Step 1: Draw a Tropical Watermelon Design: In this step, we are going to draw our tropical watermelon design. The first thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to remember that I'm going to try to fill up my whole entire space. I want to make sure that everything is pretty big on my piece of paper and there's nothing super small. The first thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to make a giant letter. This is going to be my watermelons shape, my watermelons rind, and I'm going to use my green oil pastel or you can use your crayon if you have green crayon as well. Then after I make my U, I'm going to come in on the edges, just a little tiny bit, and then I'm going to be finished with my green. Now I'm going to switch to my red, and I am going to create a line between each of those green lines. And that is it for my red. You can see the shape of our watermelon slice already. Now we're going to put some seeds here in the middle. We're not going to go along the edge down here at the bottom because that's going to be painted green. We're going to keep our seeds in this area in the middle. To make a seed a watermelon seed, you just make the shape of a little raindrop. It's small at the top and it's bigger at the bottom. Do your best on this shape. It's not the easiest shape to make, so just try your best. I'm going to fill up that space as much as I want. You might want more seeds or you might want less. It's completely up to you. Remember, we're not getting too close to this green line. All right. So now I have my seats. I'm happy with that. Now, if you are using black oil pastel, you might need to wipe off your fingers because the black is it gets pretty messy on your hands, so you'll want to wipe that off. We're finished drawing our watermelon part and we do need to paint it still, but we're just finished with the drawing part. Now, what we're going to do is put a little bit of floral design in the background because this is a tropical watermelon. I have my two colors here. I'm going to use blue and orange. I'm just going to make some blue circles and they're not going to be tiny, they're going to be pretty big. I think I'm going to make three and then I'm going to make some daisy type petals, and that's just going to be some really long and wide letter use going around my blue. And remember, we're going to paint these in, so we're not going to color them in with our oil pastels. I want them to be pretty big. Okay. All right. If there's a different type of a flower you'd like to make? You can go ahead and make that. I just happen to like daisies a lot. All right. And then I'm going to put some leaves. Coming out from my flowers, if you'd like to add some leaves. If you have some space, if you don't have space, then you can choose not to put leaves if you don't want to do that part. Now take a look at your drawing, and if there's anything that you'd like to add in an area that maybe needs a little bit more color, you can go ahead and do that. I'm pretty happy with mine right now, so I'm going to stop. When we come back in the next video, we are going to start with our watercolor painting. 3. Step 2: Paint the Design: In this step, we are going to apply our watercolor paints. So before we do that, we need to prepare our paints so they are ready for us to use. So the way that I would suggest doing is taking one or two drops of water and putting one or two drops of water into each pan of paint. And what that will do is it will dissolve the paint just a little bit and it will be much, much easier to use. That's a tip that I got from my own art teacher when I was in the third grade. And it really, really helped me. And now when I paint, every single time, I prepare my paints by putting one or two drops of water in each pan of paint while our paints are dissolving, let's talk a little bit about how we're going to paint our watermelon design. We're going to start by painting our watermelon and we're going to paint the green and the red, but we're not going to paint the black quite get the black seeds because we're going to use the black last. And then after we paint our watermelon, then we're going to paint our background and then go back to our seeds. All right, so we want to make sure that we, we paint this part green. And then we want to leave a little white space. I don't know if you've ever eaten watermelon before. But when I have, it always has this little slight white line right here next to the green, right next to the rind. And then we have the red, so it goes green, white, and then red. But the white part is really, really thin. So we're going to start out with our green and I'm going to choose this green right here. And I'm going to be very careful with this. I'm going to paint right along the edge like this. Maybe pull a little bit of that down. I need a little bit more. I'm going slowly and carefully so I'm doing my best work. A little bit more of the green. Pulling that down. There we go. All right, now that I have my green paint and make that a little bit straighter, I'm going to remember that I went to leave a little bit of space for my white. This part can get kind of tricky of the project. So going to use red and I'm going to try to leave a little space. Do you see how I'm doing that? If you do go into your green, No worry about it too much. Just do the best that you can. I've painted a lot of water melons in my day and sometimes I do go into the green. And I just say, Oh, well, I went into the green. But I try not to go on a little extra other little piece of paint. So I'm going to try to get that up with my paintbrush and put it over there on my little paper towel. So I'm going to just continue on, try my best. My red paint, trying to keep a little skinny line of white. There we go. I did it. Now that we have our little white line. Now we can go ahead and fill in the rest of our space with the red. And I'm going to not go onto my black seeds. I'm going to go around them. I'm going to take my time and I'm going to speed up this video. All ready friends. So now I'm finished painting my watermelon except for the seeds. And now I'm going to move on to the background. I'm going to paint my flowers. I think orange and pink, but maybe yellow and pink. And then I'm going to paint my leaves green and then my background blue. I might change my mind. I just kind of figure it out as I go. You can color your background, whatever colors you like. So go ahead and feel free to do that. And you watch me as I'm painting, I would love that. I'm going to speed up this video so that you can watch me and it'll only take maybe 30 seconds or so. I'm going to speed this up pretty fast. So you can watch me and then you can get started on your own painting. So I'll see you back here in just a minute. You already friends. So now I'm finished with my watermelon and the background, and now I just need to paint my seeds black. So I'm going to take some of my black paint. Let me show you. And I'm going to just put a little bit of black right here in one of my wells and I'm going to add a little bit of water to it because I don't want my black to be too dark and I really don't need that much. And when I am painting with my black paint, I'm going to be very careful because I want it to stay inside that little space. Otherwise it will run around into my red. If it does run around into your read a little bit, what you can do is take your handy-dandy paper towel and you can just blot your space a little bit. And then that will pull some of the color up. Okay. That's if your paint starts running around to places that you don't want it to be. Alrighty friends. I'm finished painting in my water melon seeds now and going to allow my painting to dry. And I really like how mine turned out. I hope that you enjoyed this project. I'll see you next time.
