1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi friends, how are you? I hope you're having a great d today. I'm excited about sharing this project with you. This is a drawing and watercolor painting project that I designed especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful in this project. I will guide students step by step through all the steps that they need to take. Today, we are going to be creating these butterflies in the garden. I hope that you have a lot of fun with this project. Let's get started. Let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a sheet of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor paints and a paint brush. I'm going to be using a smaller paintbrush today for these smaller spaces, but you can choose a larger one if that's what you have available to you. You will need a Cpble with clean water, a set of oil pastels, or crayons, and a paper towel. Go ahead and gather all of those supplies and materials, and I'll see you back here in the next video. 2. Step 1: Draw Garden Butterflies: In this step, we will draw our butterfly garden. Let's get started. Keep in mind, we want to fill up this entire space with butterflies and flowers and leaves. Anything that you might find in the garden. Okay, that's what we're going to focus on. We're going to focus first on creating our butterflies. Go ahead and choose a color that you would like to use for your first butterfly. I'm going to use this color, orange. It can be any color that you'd like. We're going to make a butterfly. I'm going to start out by making my butterfly the face and head of the butterfly. Then the body, I'm going to make like this. Then I'm going to make the wings for my butterfly such as some curved lines. Then I think what I'll do for the antenna in the eyes, I'm going to use the color black. I'll wait on that, right? I'm going to choose a different color. Now for another butterfly, I think I will use this lighter orange and I'll make another butterfly right here, circle. I think this butterfly is going to be flying this way. I'll put the wings right here because the butterfly is going to be not showing all the front of the butterfly but the side. All right. Now I'm going to choose a different color. Maybe this red. Maybe I'll make another butterfly down here. Circle, curve line, curve line, curve line for the wings. And then I'll wait to put some ice in antenna with the black. All right, let's see. I think I will use the color pink to create a smaller butterfly appear. Circle, curve, line, curve line, and then some wings. Then I think I'm going to make one more butterfly right here. And I'll use maybe purple, Maybe this butterfly will be facing this way. Circle, curve, curve, line, and then some wings. All righty, now I have my five butterflies and I think I'm going to add some detail to my butterflies before I add some background details like the flowers and the leaves. Okay, so I think I'll start with this color green right here, and I will work on this. Butterfly will add maybe a swirl here, a circle here, some lines here, That looks good. Then maybe for this butterfly right here, I will use this color blue. What I'm doing is I'm just adding different details to the wings, into the body to add a little bit more interest to the design. Then I think I will use maybe yellow for this pink butterfly right here. You might not be able to see what I'm doing with this yellow, but I'll try to press pretty hard. Then I'll move to the red for this purple. Let's see, what shape can I use about a circle and then another circle? It's always a good idea for a butterfly. Then for this orange, I think I'll use the green again. The green, I think I'm going to make some triangles inside of this space, and then a circle here. You might even add some dots here. There we go. You know what I forgot to do on this one. I forgot to add the detail on the body. And this one as well, I wanted to put some little lines. I think I use this red right here. All the next thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to use my black to add some details, I'm going to add some eyes. The reason why I'm using black is because it will really stand out. I'm going to only use one eye right here because that's just the side of the butterfly. Okay, then I'm going to make some antenna. Those are just straight lines that curl at the top. All right. Now as you can see, I do have quite a bit of space left on my piece of paper. Now what I'm going to do is I'm just going to fill in those spaces, like this space here and over here, I'm going to fill those in with different flowers and leaves and maybe even some tiny circles. If I need a little bit more detail, I'm going to go ahead and start that. I'm going to make a flow right here, just going to be a circle with some petals. And then I will make some more flowers all through my design. All right, so I have my flowers now I'm going to add some leaves, green leaves coming out from my flowers. Those are just going to be curved lines. Notice some of my flowers and leaves are going off of the piece of paper, and that's perfectly fine. Now what we're going to do is take a look at our design. If there's anything else that you'd like to add, go ahead and do it now. I am going to add some more details to my design because I feel like the spaces need to be filled up a little bit more. For example, the space right here, I'm going to add just some circles like this. Maybe I will add some circles over here. You can use any color that you'd like. For the circles, I'm just choosing this red color. Maybe I'll switch it up, choose a different color, maybe I'll choose this orange. Keep in mind when you're creating art, one of the best things about creating art is that you get to do what you want to do, because this is your artwork and it's fun to be creative experiment and do different things with your art. Just make sure that you're filling in those spaces. Any place that you see a pretty big space, just fill it in with a circle, or a leaf, or a flower, or a bug, or anything that you'd like, switch to yellow now. Alright, I think I'm finished. I'm really happy with the way that my artwork looks really busy. It has a lot of color going on and that's exactly the look that I wanted. When we come back, we will start painting our design. 3. Step 2: Paint the Design: In this step, we are going to paint our design. Let's get started. The first thing that we're going to do is we're going to add one or two drops of water into each of our pans of paint. What this will do is it will soften up our paint a little bit so that it is easier for us to use. I do encourage my students to take this step because it really does help. There we go. Now that our paints are softening up, let's turn our attention to our design. Here we have some butterflies and some flowers, and we also have some dots that have filled up the space. What we're going to do in this step is we are just going to paint the butterflies, flowers, and dots. And then we're going to leave that background white. Okay? You get to decide the colors that you'd like to use. I'm going to use a variety of different colors. I'm just going to go with the flow to see what I want to do in that moment. If I feel like painting this butterfly green, then I'm just going to do it. If you have a smaller paintbrush, you might want to use that, but if you don't, that's okay. Just use your larger paint brush. I'm going to probably use my smaller one for part of this design, if not all of it. Okay. So I'm just going to start painting. I'll start with one color, probably the yellow, and then I'll just go around and I'll start painting different things, yellow. And then once I'm finished painting with the yellow, then I'll switch to a different color. All right, friends, I'm finished painting my design. It's nice and bright and colorful. And that's exactly what I was looking for. I hope that you had a lot of fun with this project. I will see you next time.
