1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: A Hi, friends. How are you? I hope you're having
a great day today. I'm excited about sharing
this project with you. This is a drawing and
watercolor painting project that I designed,
especially for kids. Students do not need to have any drawing or
painting experience at all to be successful
with this project. I will guide students step by step through all the steps
that they need to take, so they will feel
comfortable at all times. Today, we are going to be
creating this farm scene with a cute horse, pig, and cow. O let's talk about the supplies and the materials that you will need
for this project. The first thing that you'll need is a piece of watercolor paper. You will need a set of watercolor painting
and a paintbrush. I like to use this
size paintbrush, but just use what you
have available to you. You will need a cup or a
bowl with clean water, a set of crayons or a set of oil pastels and a paper towel. So go ahead and gather all of those supplies
and materials, and I'll see you back
here in the next video.
2. Step 1: Draw Farm Animals: And in this step, we are going to draw our design. So let's get started. I will suggest a color of
crayon or oil pastel to you. And if you don't have
that exact color, that's okay. No problem. Just use the color that is closely matching the color
that I ask you to use. For example, if I ask
you to pick up a pink, oil pastel or crayon and you don't have a
pink, that's okay. You can either use
purple or orange, something that's pretty
similar to the color pink. Sound good? Alright, so the first thing
that we're going to do is we are going to
use the color black. I'm going to set my
crayons aside over here because I'm going to be
using my oil pastels. But if you don't have oil
pastels, that's okay. Just use your crayons. So
pick up the color black. And right here at the very, very bottom of your
piece of paper, we're going to make
some rectangles. So I'm going to come in a
little bit from the side, and I'm going to
make a rectangle. And the rectangle is going to be a straight line going across and then two
straight lines coming down. All right? Then I'm going
to put a few of those across my piece of paper
down at the bottom. Three or four is just fine. So I'm going to go
ahead and do that. That one goes off
my piece of paper. Alright, if they're not
evenly spaced, that's okay. No problem. Now what we're going to
do is we're going to come up a tiny bit
from the bottom, and we're going to
make a line from the side of our piece of
paper to our rectangle, jump over our rectangle,
make another line, jump over our rectangle, and so on all the way across our piece of
paper like this. This is going to be the fence to hold our animals
inside our farm. Sound good? So now that we're
finished drawing our fence, let's put our black crayon or oil pastel away back
in the container. And if you have black
on your fingers, you can wipe that off
on your paper towel. The next color that we're
going to use is pink. So go ahead and pick up your
pink oil pastel or crayon, and we're going to make the head of a pig right here
in the center. Keep in mind, we want to
leave enough space on this side and on this
side for other animals. So we're just going to make the head of a pig right
here in the center. So I'm going to make
a nice round circle. If your circle is not
this round, that's okay. I have had a lot of
practice drawing circles, so my circles might look
different from yours. Now let's put some
ears on our pigs, so they have pretty pointy
ears at the top of the circle. And then we're
also going to make a snout right here
pretty close to the bottom of our
circle, just like that. And we will add the details
in a little bit later. We'll add the eyes in and the nostrils and a
little mouth as well. Now we're going to make
some shoulders coming down, and we're going to touch
that fence just like this. Alright? There we go. Okay. Remember,
we're going to add some more details to the
pig in just a little bit. Now what we're going
to do is we're going to put our pink away, and we are going to
choose the color brown. So choose your color brown, and then go to one of
your sides of your pig, and that's the side
that you're going to make your horse on, okay? So the horse on my piece of
paper is going to go here. But if you want to put your
horse over on this side, you can do that, as well. Alright, so I'm going
to make my horse here. I'm going to make a curve line, and then I'm going to make
a really long letter. You? If you look at a horse's
face, it's pretty long. Now we're going to go
back up to the top, and we're going to make some pretty pointy
ears, triangles. And then we're going
to come down here and make a slightly curved
line like this. And then here at the top, we're going to make the
letter V, just like that. Now, similar to the pig, we are going to add
some more details onto our horse a
little bit later. But what we can do right
now is we can make the shoulders on this side
and this side of our horse. Okay? So coming down
from this mouth area, we're going to make
two curve lines, and we're just going
to go to the point where we touch the fencing. Now we have our
pig and our horse, and let's move on to this
side of our piece of paper. We are going to go back
to the color black, and we're going to create
a cow right here, right? So what we're going to
do is start about right here and we're going
to make an oval shape, but we're not going to close up the oval shape at the top. It's going to be like
that. All right. Then here at the top, what we're going to do is we are going to make a
little tuft of hair, and those are just going to be some s that are
connected together. Now we can close
up that area right there at the top of the head
and then make some ears, some curve lines
to make some ears. Now we're going to
come down to the face, and at the bottom of the face, we're going to
make a curve line. And then let's make
some shoulders for our cow. There we go. And then if you'd like to make your features for
your cow's face, let's put some eyes. So here I've made a
small tail for my cow, and that's just a
teardrop shape, and it's connected with a
curve line to the cow's body. Now that we have our
black oil pastel or crayon in our hand, we can go ahead and go back to the pig and make some features
in the face of our pig. So I'm going to make some eyes, some small dots for nostrils. And then also, let me make that one a
little bit more even. And then also, I'm going
to make a tiny mouth. I like this kind of a mouth
on a pig, a little dot. And then we can also put some features on the
face of our horse. So let's make some eyes. If there's a different type of an eye that
you'd like to make, you can go ahead and do that. And then we can also make
some small nostrils. And then if you'd also like to make a mam, you can do that. You can just make some
short little hairs coming out from one side. That's up to you. You don't
have to do that part. Once you're finished with
your black oil pastel or your black crayon, go
ahead and put it away. If your hands need a
little bit of cleaning, go ahead and clean your
hands on your paper towel. Now, take a look at your
artwork at your drawing. If there's anything
else that you'd like to add at this time, go
ahead and do that. I think I'm going to
add a few clouds in the background because I have
a little tiny bit of space. If you have some space, you can go ahead and add
something if you want to. You don't have to, but I feel
like if I add these clouds, that would be a good idea. And what we're going to
do in the next video is we are going to start
painting our design.
3. Step 2: Paint the Design: In this step, we are going
to paint our design. So let's get started. The first thing that
we're going to do is we are going to add a drop or two of water into
each pan of paint. And what this will do
is it will soften up our paints a little so they will be a lot
easier for us to use. So I always suggest that students take the
time to do this part, this step because
that will make it easier for them when they are ready to start
applying paint. Now that our paints
are softening up, let's turn our attention
to our design. So we're going to
paint the horse, the pig, and the cow. And what I'm going
to do, I'm going to tell you the colors
that I'm going to use, but you can use whatever
colors that you like. This is your artwork, so you get to choose the colors
that you're going to use. I'm going to have a brown horse, a pink pig, and a white cow
with a little bit of black. So black spots, black hair, maybe black ears, and
a tip of the tail. This part of the face
of my cow and my horse, I'm going to use a
peachy type color, a really light color. So let me show you how
I create that color. I take a little bit of orange
and quite a bit of water, and then I just apply it, and it's super, super light. When I'm creating colors
for cows and horses, I just like to use this very light shade
of orange. There we go. Alright, so what we're
going to do now is you are going to watch
me paint my design, just the cow, the pig, and the horse, and then you
will start painting yours. I'm going to speed up the video, so it's going to
go pretty quickly, and then I'll see you back
here in just a minute. Alrighty friends, I'm
finished painting my horse, my pig, and my cow. I wanted to show you my palette. So I used a lot of water and a little bit of paint for
my brown for my horse. I used quite a bit of
water and a little bit of black for this gray
color for my cow. And for my pig, I used quite a bit of water
and a little bit of paint. But then I thought, Oh, I want my ears to
stand out a little bit more and my snout to stand
out a little bit more. So I added a little
bit more paint. Keep in mind, if
you'd like a darker, more vivid color, use more
paint and less water. If you'd like a softer color, then you use more
water than paint. Alright? So when we come back, we will be painting
the background.
4. Step 3: Paint the Background: In this step, we are going to apply some paint
to the background. So let's get started. I'm choosing to keep my fence white because I like that
look of a fence that's white. You can paint your fence or you can keep it
white, as well. It's up to you. I'm going to paint my background
a light blue. So I'm going to go ahead and use this color blue right here. I'm going to add a little bit of water into one of my wells, and then I'm going to add some
blue paint into that well, and that is what I'm going to use for my sky for
my background. So let me show you.
I have some water, and then I just add a
little bit of blue, and there we go. I want my sky to
be pretty light, so I'm adding more
water than paint. Alright, so what I'm going to do is I'm going to start
up here at the top. I'm not going to
paint over my clouds. I want my clouds to stay white. But if you want your clouds
to be a different color, then go ahead and paint them whatever color
you'd like them to be. So I'm going to go ahead
and speed up this video, and I'll be back to see
you in just a moment. Alrighty friends. I'm back, and I'm finished painting. My farm animals. I really like how my
painting turned out. I hope that you had a lot
of fun with this project. I will see you next time.
