1. Introduction and Supplies You Will Need: Hi, friends. I hope you're
having a great day today. I'd like to introduce
you to this project. This is a drawing and
watercolor painting a cute koala project that I designed,
especially for kids. You do not need to have any drawing or painting experience at all to be successful
with this project. I'd like to go over
the supplies and the materials that you will
need for this project. The first thing
that you'll need is a piece of watercolor paper. You will need some
watercolor paints. You will need a paintbrush. I like to use a paintbrush
about this size, but use what you have
available to you. You will need a cup or
a bowl of clean water. And you will need either
a black oil pastel or a black crayon and a paper towel just in case you have something that
you need to clean up. So go ahead and gather those
supplies and materials, and I'll see you back
here in the next video.
2. Step 1: Draw a Koala Design: In this step, we are
going to draw our koala. So let's get started. Please pick up your
black oil pastel or your black crayon. I'm going to use my
black oil pastel, and we're going
to want to come a little bit down from the
top of our piece of paper, maybe about five or 6 ". That would be maybe
seven or 8 centimeters. And we're going to make a
shape that looks like this. It's kind of a rectangle, but it has more curved
sides. Let me just show you. So it's a shape that has softer sides without having
really sharp angles. So go ahead and
make that shape in the center of your piece of
paper about five or 6 " down. That's going to be the
head of our koala. Now we're going
to make his ears, and koala's ears
are pretty large. So we're going to go to
the side of our shape, and we're going to
make just large letter C. And then on this side, a backwards, large letter C. That's going to be
the ear of our koala. Now let's go into the face, and we're going to make
a large oval nose. And koala's eyes
are pretty small. So we're going to just
make some small circles, and they're going to
be pretty wide set. If you would like to
make a small smile, you can go ahead and do that
down here at the bottom. Maybe I'll make a small
smile right here. Oh, that looks cute, doesn't it? Alright, now that I have
my koala's face and ears, what I'm going to do next is I'm going to create his body. So I'm going to
come down here from the left hand side on his chin, and I'm going to
make a curved line. Let me show you what I mean. I come down. And then I
come up just like that. So it's almost like a
sideways letter you now, that's going to be the back of my koala and then
his bun bun area, and then the back of his leg. Okay? The next thing that
we're going to do is we are going to make
his knee right here. So we start here about an inch
or an inch and a half up. That would be about
2 centimeters, and we make an upside down, and then we close up right here. So that's going to be his
knee and his little foot. Now let's move up to this space right here and
we're going to make his arm. So I'm just going to make a slightly curved line right here. And then underneath that, I'm going to make
another curve line, and I'm going to make sure that they meet here at the tip. I'm going to put some
fingers and some toes. Alright, so now that we have our hand here and our foot here, we're going to close up the body of our koala in just a moment. We're going to make the branches that he's sitting on first. Okay? So we're going to make this branch that's supporting
his body right here. So I'm going to start.
I would say maybe about an inch down for
this part of his leg. That would be about
2 centimeters, and I'm just going
to make a line. It's not going to be
super straight because this is a branch and branches
aren't super straight. So a line, you need
to make sure it touches his bun bun area
and then comes on up. And then here, what
we're going to do is we're going to make a wide, wide letter V, and it's going to touch the bottom of his leg. Then it's going to come up. And we're going to jump over
his hand and his fingers, and then we'll
come up like this. This is going to
be the other side of the tree that
he's holding onto. Now we're going to
come back down here in this area right here and make the bottom part
of this branch. And remember, it
doesn't have to be really straight
because it's a branch. We want to make sure it
looks kind of natural. And then that goes
down like that because this is part of
the tree coming down. We're going to do the same
thing on the other side. So the bottom part
of this branch Oh, jump over those little fingers, jump over that little
foot, and then come down. Do you see how that works? Now, what does it look like? It looks like a koala
is sitting on a branch here and then holding
onto this branch here. Now that we have our branches, what we can do is we can close
up the body of our koala. So I'm going to make
another arm here. So it's going to attach from the bottom of his
chin to the branch. And so it looks like arm, his other arm on
the other side of his body is holding onto the
other side of the branch. And then we're going
to make his tummy, and his tummy is fairly large. We have fairly large
tummies. There we go. Okay, so there's our koala. And what we're going to do now, if you feel like it, you
can make some leaves. So koalas like to eat
eucalyptus leaves, and so I'm going to make
some eucalyptus leaves. There are different shapes
of eucalyptus leaves, but I'm just going to
make them pretty long, the long type of a leaf
on a eucalyptus tree. And I'm not going
to put too many on the branches because
that's just my choice. But if you want to put a bunch on the actual branches,
you can do that. What I think I am
going to do, though, is I'm going to put some
down at the bottom, and maybe even a few at the top. I'm not sure if you can
see this on the video. I'm just going to
make some leaves coming out from the sides. And the reason why I'm doing this is because I feel like it will create more
interest in my artwork, and that's what I'm looking for. So I'm just going to make
some long eucalyptus leaves. And if you'd like to make a
different shape of a leaf, you can go ahead and do that. It's completely up to you. This is your artwork so you
get to do what you want. Alright, I'm really
happy with my drawing, and I think that I'm finished. So if you see a space
that you'd like to fill up with a leaf
or something else, go ahead and do that now
before we start painting. And when we come back
in the next video, we will be applying
paint to our drawing.
3. Step 2: Paint the Background: I In this step, we are going to apply some
color to our background sky. So think about the color
that you would like to use for your sky
in the background, and that's what we're going to be doing first before we apply paint to our koala or our
leaves or our branches. So the first thing that we're
going to do is we're going to prepare our paints, and the way that we prepare
our paints is we put one or two drops of
water inside each pan of paint and what that does is it softens up and it dissolves
our paint a little bit, so it makes it much, much easier to use. So you just do that and
it's a quick thing to do that will make you feel
really, really successful. Okay, so I'm going
to start at the top, and I'm going to
work my way down, and I'm going to try to
stay inside my line so I don't get blue on my
leaves or on my koala. I'm going to speed up this
video so you can watch me. It'll be really quick. And then when we come back, we will add paint to other
parts of our drawing. Alright, friends, I'm finished with painting the background, and in our next step, we are going to be painting our leaves and our
branches and our koala. So I'll see you back
here in the next video.
4. Step 3: Paint the Koala: In this step, I am going to finish painting my koala design. I'm going to start out
by painting my leaves, then my branches, and then last, I'm going to paint my koala. The reason why I'm going
to paint my koala last is because I'm going to be
painting him a grayish color, and I'm going to be using
black paint for that. So I'm going to show you how to mix black and a little
bit of water into gray. So I will be doing that last. So I'm going to get
started on my leaves, and I'm going to paint
them this shade of green, and I'm just going
to take my time so I can do my best work. And I'm going to
speed up this video so that you can watch me and
it'll go very, very quickly. Alrighty friends.
So now I'm going to paint my koala gray, and I wanted to show
you how to make gray paint with just a
little bit of black. So I'm going to put a little
bit of black into my well, and I'm going to mix it
with a little bit of water, so more water than paint, actually, because I want my
gray to be pretty light. I don't want it
to be super dark. That looks just about perfect. So did you see how I did that? I added a little bit of paint and a lot of
water together. And it made this gray color. Let me set that down, and I'm going to paint my koala. Now, when I get to the cheeks, I'm going to do something
special. Let me show you. I'm going to make some
circles here like this. This is optional. That means you can do this if you want to, but
you don't have to. The reason why I'm going
to make some circles is because I'm going to
paint those areas, those cheek areas in
with a light pink. I wanted my koalas
cheeks to be pink, so I wanted to paint
those in with pink, and so I don't want to
paint them in this gray. So I'm going to push
this gray around. I'm going to stay out of that circle that I
made on that cheek. Like that. And then I will
come back at the end, and I will fill that
space in this space right here with a
little bit of peak. Alrighty friends.
So the last thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to put some pink on
my cheeks of my koala, and I'm going to paint his nose. His nose is going
to be pretty dark, and I'm going to
use quite a bit of black paint on his nose. So I wanted to get
this pink on here first before I make my
water really black. There we go. Now,
I have a feeling that I would like my cheeks
to be a little bit lighter. So I'm going to take my
handy dandy paper towel and I'm going to hover
it over that area, and I'm just going to touch
it very, very softly. And that will soak up a little bit of the
pink paint because I want that pink to be
really, really light, right? So the last thing I need to do now is I need to
paint that nose. So I'm going to use
a darker black, maybe even darker than that. Maybe even darker than that. When you are painting Iva to experiment with
colors. There we go. I really want that
nose to stand out because koala's noses are
very distinct, aren't they? Ok doke. How cute is
that little koala. I really hope that you
enjoyed this project, and I will see you next time.
