1. Intro: Resin Wave on a Glass Picture Frame: Hey, everyone, it's Kelly. Hear from Kelly chassis Fine art. And I'm gonna show you today how I created these gorgeous pieces of resin on glass. And I'll do a demo for you at the very end here. But first, we're going to cover just quickly my favorite substrates that I use resin on. And then we'll cover my top resin mistakes that I have learned through the years using art resin. So stick around and I'll be covering all of my supplies. It'll be using for this and I'll show you step by step, how to create on glass.
2. My Favorite Substrates to Use Resin On: everyone's Kelly here, so I wanted covered with you today. What? My top substrates are working with resin. So obviously number one would be you built paper. I use EVOO paper for everything, and it's really easy to take a, uh either a wooden board or canvass board and hear your You put paper to that and then you can resin on top of it. Um, and also I love these little liquid art panels can see that these air wonderful the work on . And you can also use not only canvases. They said you can use skiing trail boards, which is what this one is. And they have different ones with different depths so you can get some really wide ones too much ones what each one's would prefer. Policy. Also, campuses air really fun to work on with President. So this is a canvas piece, and I let it drip kind of on the sides there. So there, you know, more abstract. But you can also, uh, here the U PO paper to the campus as well, and then resin. On top of that, I also use everybody knows she's tiles, right. So this is a tile and once that's painted on the tile with the alcohol inks, then you could go ahead and put the resin on top of that. But also, you probably have seen some jewelry that I'd be working with So you can use, um, you can use that for creating jewelry as well. Reasons for that. It's good for lots of things. So those were some of my top. And then what I'm gonna show you today in the demo is how to create it using piece blast so you can actually take glass from a frame and use resin to paint on that as well. All right, so if you're ready, let's take a look at the materials that will need.
3. Material Needed for Resin on Glass Project: All right. So you guys ready to paint? So this is what you'll need for materials. It's a basic little frame, mrs. If I buy seven here that has some glass in it, I'm gonna recommend that you start small with five by seven. But you can all also go bigger if you want to. And for this project, I'll be using pinata inks by Jack Hard with Baja blue rich gold Montilla black and some white as well. You'll need to make sure that you have gloves, some Popsicle sticks and some banana. Thinks, of course, or ranger ANC's. Whichever one you decide. I'm also using some jacquard gold in this one, and you'll be creating something that looks like this. Hopefully when you're done, I did two pieces, and they both look totally different. That's really the great thing about resin. So I'm excited to see what you come up with, and I would love to see or pieces. You're finished pieces either on my instagram page or Facebook so you can make sure to tag me at Kelly Lin art on their or also, you could do hash tag. Kelly chassis underscore fine art, so I'd love to see them. So let's get started and I'll show you how to do it
4. Let's Begin Mixing our Resin: we'll cover my top mistakes that I've learned using resin as we go through this process. So, um, I'm gonna be using just a frame here. It's a little flight by seven frame with a little piece of glass in there, and I'm just gonna take that glass out, and I am going to lay it on top of these cups. You could always use tape if you wanted to, but when this goes inside the frame, I'm not gonna be able to see it. So too worried about the drips. So the first mistake. Make sure that your table is level or your substrate is level Shoe Taylor could be level on your cups. Might not be so. You can use Popsicle sticks to level that off, but it's really important because you're resident will, um, like water. It will go if there's any angle that will run that way. I do want to mention with our president, you have a 40 minute work time. So once you mix these two together, you have 40 minutes from start to finish before it starts to cure. So the second thing is make sure that you are measuring your resident for using art resin by volume, not by weight. And that's very important because one weighs more than the other. So if you're measuring by weight, you may get the incorrect amounts. So top mistake number three and mixing art resin. Make sure that you mix it for at least three minutes, and that is very important once again, because if this is not mixed correctly, make sure you get your sides the bottom. Um, if it's not mixed correctly, you will have areas that could not cure properly, and you could have some that are sticky, so it's very important to mix for that full three minutes often set a timer, and, um, make sure that I have at least started for that three minutes. And sometimes, if you're doing bigger batches, you may want to go even longer. So I'm not using a whole lot of resin on this one. Um, I actually I think I mixed up a total of two ounces, one for each glass, and I had plenty of Ressam for that. But again, if you're, um, you wanna waste resin because it's expensive. So, you know, look at your space. They have a wonderful little calculator on our resident dot com, where you can see how much resin that you'll use for a um, you know, whatever square footage working with, so next will be tinting our resin.
5. Mixing Pigment into Our Resin: So I'm now going to pour my residents. It's mixed for three minutes, and I'm gonna pour into my little separate container for the colors that I'm going to use. And I usually will leave, you know, some clear. In their case, I need to mix up another, uh, another color. Or if I didn't have enough for particular particular color while I'm working with it. So I'm I'm using the Baja blue, Hear from Jack Hard, and I'm gonna put in a few drops here, and you can do this to your liking. With alcohol inks, the alcohol will usually evaporate with the resin. But you can get too much paint and resin, which will again make it so it doesn't cure properly. So just a few drops. You know, um, you get it to the color that you like, but add it slowly. It's not as bad with the alcohol inks because, like I said, alcohol, ankle absorb. If you're using other things to tent, you're resin with acrylics, things like that. It's a whole other, um, quantity that you want to put in there very little amounts to tent. So the second cover gonna go ahead and use some of the white and again stirring it really well, making sure that I got that that color. And there will. You can do it without mixing real well. And you'll get some cool little, um, swirl actions where you have clear resin and the color kind of mixing in there. So those are kind of fun things to play with us. Well, so in this one, I'm gonna add the black and we'll mix that one up. Now you can see a black is quite opaque. It's very dark. That was just a couple drops in there. So now you got those home. Except you can just let that sit for a little bit and the air bubbles will relax a little bit more. We're gonna add a little bit more blue. I'm doing this, Um, and we're gonna be torching this oneness so air bubbles will come out when we torch it anyway. But, um, if you want to let it sit for a little bit like I said the bubbles over release on their own, sometimes not always. If you have done a very thorough mixing, you may get more bubbles than normal. I'm gonna show you how we can go ahead and pop those with a torch. So there. I think I have enough blue now. And I think we can use either the gold or I have uhm uhm do both for this for this one's you speak into the difference. This is Markle Gold Budget car, and it's their powdered pigments, which are really, really fun to work with us. Well, a lot of them have some really pretty iridescence to them. I'm going to show you both will use. We'll start with this one's. I'm gonna go ahead and mix up another cup here just a little bit. It's not gonna take a whole lot. And this could make you know for a really pretty sandy color. And since we're doing kind of a beach last wave rock abstract, I'm going for here. I thought we could add that in is more like the sand look so again, you don't need a whole lot just the very tip of that, and we'll go ahead and mix that up, man, that we have not pretty to the reflection in there is very iridescent pretty. Okay, so now we've got our colors mixed up and you could see I did not use a whole lot of resin for this and course. We're only using a little piece of glass here. I think it's end up being like a four by six. Piece of glass was a frame itself is five by seven.
6. Let's Begin Adding Resin on our Glass: so again, make sure thing that is on ice level area, and I'm going to start with the blue to begin with. I'm just gonna kind of drip that on there. Make sure that your glasses clean. That's really important. I went ahead and clean these prior and make sure that there is no water on there. If you happen to use open water to clean yours you want make sure those air fully dry cause water will will react with a resonant again. It will cause it. So that doesn't sometimes here properly. I'm just putting a little dribble on here is so pretty cause it's very it's transparent by looking at through the glass. So if you, um, wanted to try other kinds of paints, you definitely could could use other paints. Um, you can use high flow acrylics. You can use more of the opaque looking jacquard powder pigments. You can use Ranger ANC's um, so there's lots of options. Now I just want to show you. If you do want to take that off, you could tape off those edges. Just be really super careful because you're dealing with glass, and I don't want you to cut yourself. But like I said, I'm just gonna go ahead and, um, not tape this. You could also take the underneath, but you want to make sure you peel that off before it cures completely. So for this one, I'm not going to use the tape, but I just wanted to show you that that is definitely an option for you. I always tried to shorten things anyway, and like I said, you're not going to see the back of it. So unless you want to flip it around and it does look kind of cool that way, if you look around the other way, you could always do a reverse picture of a swell. So back to, ah, the inx s. If you wanted to do something less transparent, you could use more opaque paints such as high flow acrylic paints. You could use Bombay ANC's. And, um, you know, the Ranger Ranger does tend to light a little bit when you add the heat to it. So, um, just keep that in mind. You know, some colors are worse than others. And again, it was a with everything, everything you have to kind of test your ear materials out. So I'm just gonna spread this out here. You can see how easy this moves. And again, I have not heated up the resin yet. So it's pretty sick. And you will notice once I heat this up and remove some of the bubbles, that's when it tends to get more fluid and more runny. So I'm gonna try to get these in this first layer color in here first so that I have a little bit of definition when I go ahead and add that gold here. And this is all all all my classes, I really want you to play. But that's what it's all about to have taken some of my online classes, you know, especially the air. The air class. Um, that one's all about all about play. Abstracts are very playful. When you're dealing with the the paintings. It's a little bit maybe a little bit more stressful because you wanted Teoh look like something, but no, these were all about color. So I'm gonna mix up just a little bit more here of that gold. I want a little bit more of that land mass area there where the sand would be Let's go ahead and just try. It is I want you to see the difference between the gold Ah, and the powder pigment. The goal is to schools fantastic. We'll mix that, and I'm just adding it rate to the one I already have. You can see what you get here, so when you mix that in with the resin, it tends to dilute the gold a little bit more, and I'll show you later. Hear what you can do. You can actually drop it directly on top of the resin, and we'll do a little bit of that so you can see the difference there as well. So this is more mixed in still pretty, but it's just not quite as vibrant as what it will be. You'll see here in a little bit. Now let's put the cap on that, and it will add some black to this
7. Continue Adding Colors: you can see how rich that black is. I was gonna fill that. And be careful you don't Don't accidentally move that black onto another area because it's really hard to kind of cover that dark shade up. All right, so you got are three colors down here, made a mess with that black. I dripped it all over. And I was just telling you guys to that it's ah, and better with this with a glass doesn't tend to move as much, but all right, so now we're going to heat it up here, and we're gonna get rid of those blood. Those bubbles. You can see them popping right away. Now, you can see how pretty this is is very transparent right now, so you can always put ah, piece of clear. You put paper behind the glass and for some people will just do the alcohol inks on directly on the glass. And you could also, uh, the alcohol ANC's on U boat paper than but the glass on top of it, which is what we normally dio. But the resin helps with that UV protection to that is a really nice plus. So now I'm mixed up that white here. And I'm just gonna add that on top of some of those other colors. I was trying to get a little squiggly action here, so it looks somewhat like a wave, and you'll have to play with this. This is one of those things that you, um you know, you have to kind of manipulate the the white, and you could make a little very realistic, like a wave. Or you can kind of give it more of an abstract look, which is what I'm gonna do here. So I'm just gonna take my fingers and move those inks. That resident rate around pretty meat, right layer. But we're not done yet. A little bit more in here. You know, when the waves kind of crash in onto your beach area, you do get a little bit of that. Ah, the water effect in there as well. But we try to keep up here, and then we'll we're gonna do something else down in this bottom section here. So now I want you to do is take your white and we're gonna put a food jobs in here. And I want you to see what this will do in the resident when you add it to the top. I was going to drop a few drops in here. You can see where is already dissipating, but it's getting that that ring. So now we're gonna take our torch and we're gonna heat that resin up. So we're basically going Teoh, you burn off the alcohol. So this is important. Make sure you're in a very ventilated area and, um, you know, make sure you taking every safety precautions for yourself, you need to wear a mask or not. Please do that so you can see here where I'm going to heat this up and it's moving. Now. You're getting a lot of movement in that water. And I lost some of my resident period top. We're gonna add this a little bit more and you can see that cool lacing effect that that does when you heat that up. And almost it looks like water to me like a little, uh, patches of water in there, of course, can't promise that it's going to stay that way because that's what the president has a tendency to continue to move and do what it wants to do so it's a little bit less forgiving . As faras control goes, Let's go ahead and add a little bit more where that weight down and here once again, I'm gonna heat that up. But be careful. You don't heat it up too much because you don't want to burn the resin. I shouldn't be smoking or anything on you. You just kind of, you know, kind of heated up and continue to move it so I don't want to hold it in one place for too long. So that leaves you with the tip number four torching and how the heat affects the resin. You can see here how it will if we're adding it directly on the top of the inning, indirectly on top of the resin. You'll get that cool lazing effect, and if you leave it in one area too long, your resident can burn. So that's really important that you continuously move that torch around and make sure that you've got all areas covered. And the next tip would be number five and making sure that you are popping those bubbles because if you don't get your bubbles pop and I'd like to torch it, a few times because the bubbles will tend to keep raising or writing to the surface. So you want to make sure that your, um torching it a few times. Just make sure that you know when you're finished, that you've given it a good coverage. Um, and your bubbles at that point should stop releasing and ah in the level themselves off. Once you've hit it with a torch a few times now, you can also take a tooth pick. If you have some bubbles in there as it starts, secure a little bit, you could take a toothpick and kind of just pop those bubbles as well Makes it really easy to dio. Just make sure that you're as this starts to cure, and once it starts to set that you no longer do that because that will leave dense in in your resin annual see little divides and things, and they're so as it starts to cure, it's time to just cover it and leave it alone. So let's add a little bit more direct gold on here. Look at that. It's not fabulous well, and you can mix it in a little bit if you want to add a little resin on top. Afterward, you could see how you could take your Popsicle stick and just kind of maneuver it around and get a little resin in there. That way, it sticks will stick to your resume a little bit. Stuffers pouring off the top there. Almost looks like a wave coming right out of my painting, huh? All right. Just a little bit more heated that up. Just to see what it's gonna dio at a little bit more resin to this as well. This is almost looking like little rocks in there, so you can almost, you know, other resume this little little pattern for him here. It gives the appearance of a little bit of rocks. I'm from Maine, so we have a lot of these coastal rocks. Depends on what part of the country you're from, right? It's kind of playing with those in there and well, let that kind of sit a little bit more. That blue
8. Final Touches : and then we'll add just a little bit more white in here. A swell. You have 45 minutes of work time with resin. So where the art resident least some. There's some residents that will care a lot quicker. And that's another reason why I like to work with the art residents. That gives us plenty of time. Teoh really kind of manipulate what we're doing. Whether we're making a painting or creating jewelry, you know, you don't have, like, a 15 minute work time. You have plenty of time Teoh to create, Gonna pop a little bit more white in here, consumer. I maneuver those waves again when I had a little bit more of this, that texture you see wearing that you could see where it's burning that alcohol right up. Um, you gotta be careful because, like I said, you don't want this big flame. It's just a very little amount alcohol, so it doesn't burn like it does. If you're doing it on, you put paper or a tile where it's very wet and you catch a long fire. If it does just blow on it blurring out. But be careful as I'm saying this to make sure all the legal stuff take Take your safety precautions with all of this stuff. But you when you were from the fire, right? Right. So pretty much finished. I just want to show you here. I just kind of level that off a little bit. You can see where Have a big puddle there. So another resident spilling out to that side. So I just took the little craft stick underneath there and that will stop that from happening the rest of the way. So now, um, here's the second piece here that I've done, and I'll show you the first piece again. And the last little section here are last mistake that I've learned is to make sure that I cover my resin piece well and let it dry for 24 hours. The key is to stop yourself from going in to check on it every 5 to 10 minutes. Because every time you uncover, it gives a chance for a little stray hair, a piece of lint or something toe land into it. So if you can help it once, you've done your last torching and you could just check on the bubbles with me one more time. Leave it alone. Let it dry
9. Outro and Projects.: So here's the final piece here, all hardened. And they're gorgeous. They're transparent. Like I said, in some places you could always like I said, Stick piece of clear. You pull paper, white paper behind it if you wanted Teoh. Um, but these are absolutely gorgeous. So I'm gonna grab my frames here that we have and they will fit in there. Just about Perfect. Make sure we get the backing on there. Now you may have to adjust it at a little phone cord to the back if it moves around too much. Look at the backside. Isn't that gorgeous, too? You can always put around, especially we don't get any residue on the back of it. If you do get rest on the back of it, you wanted to clean it off. You could use a little alcohol that will help clear that up before it dries. So let's go ahead and attach the back here. Mom, this fight. Look how beautiful that is. Most go ahead and do the 2nd 1 Actually, this was the 1st 1 Have a different frame for that. One's a little bit wider. Back of that one's quite pretty, too. So there you have it all framed up on are ready to go now You could always if you wanted to operate to mention this. If you want to place like shells or sand or really anything you can place in the resin as it's starting to cure. The key to that is placement time is to get it while it's still wet and sticky, but not to it. So that slides everywhere. So here we have our finished piece. I hope you guys enjoy this a lot. And if you ah, do this yourself, I would love to see it. So make sure you tag me on instagram er on Facebook and, ah, show us your work would love to see it and make sure the you guys sign up for my email newsletter For lots of new things coming up for this year and online classes, you'll be the first ones to see them and hear about them. Um, and huge consign right up on my Web site at www dot kelly Tassi fine art dot com. And don't forget to check out my YouTube channel. There's lots of India's going up. I'm trying to do one a week that might be pushing it, but we'll see how it goes for this year. So thanks so much
