1. Skillshare intro: Our IT folks and welcome to Skillshare. So this is an exciting thing. You actually found one of the biggest baddest Affinity Designer courses out there for the iPad. So we've taken eight hours worth of material and we've chunked it down today, eight projects, specific projects that you can utilize. And so there's eight volumes total in this thing. We would recommend that you take them in order. We start off with the basics of shapes and then we move up to things like pixel. But if you feel uncomfortable and you want to learn a little bit about a certain functionality, feel free to take the volume that matches your skill level. So we're very excited to be here on skill share and we hope that you learn a lot from Affinity Designer. And if there's anything we can do to help you along your journey, when it comes to infinity, hit us up in the comments and we will respond. All right, thank you very much. Have a good time.
2. Opening your first document and introduction to personas : All right, gang. And welcome to affinity designer for iPad. I am so excited that affinity designer finally released their iPad. I've been using affinity designer now for the desktop for quite a while. I do use procreate when it comes to Rast arising and raster based images. But now that affinity designers out there, this is my new go to and I couldn't be happier with it. All right, so let's go ahead and get started. So to navigate this thing were to begin right off the bat, and I'm gonna be teaching you the basics of digital art. I'm going to assume that you are brand new to digital art and that this is your first experience with the iPad. So let's go ahead now and hit on this plus sign. Now, the plus sign will take you to this menu. And now we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna go new document. We'll talk about how to open from the cloud import from the cloud in the photos later. All right, so let's go ahead and bring up a new document. Now you can choose based on device, or you can choose web now. I'm gonna go ahead. I'm gonna choose Web. This means that we're going to set our image up to be displayed on a website and then you can set the sides like you've got 12 80 by 800 here shown on the screen. Now you see, when it hit the drop down menu, I can change the size. So let's go ahead and find the oh, let's go full HD 10. 80 p. There we go. 1920 by 10. 80. So that's going to mean there that it will fit on a normal average size screen monitor and we're gonna make the unit of measure pixels. All right, Perfect. Now let's take a look at color. RGB is fine for right now. The dash eight rgb Don't worry about that. That's a little bit too advanced. And the cool thing about iPad now is that you can go through in these dimensions and you can swipe to the right or to the left, and you see how those numbers begin to move. That's how you adjust all of these slider wheels. Now you can adjust the orientation, we're gonna work in landscape, and here is where you can select transparent background Now we'll talk about what that is. Later. If you're gonna export to a P and G, or you're going to do any sort of graphics work, which will require transparency, that's what you do. Or you can create different art boards. I know you don't know any of these terms. We're good to go right now. Go ahead and make sure transparent background is off and hit. OK, all right. Now we have a new canvas. This is what's called the canvas. And it's 1920 by 10. 80. So now let's go ahead and take a look at what we've got over here. We've got three different What affinity calls personas. So you see up here in the upper left hand column, we've got the blue affinity symbol selected. This is what is called our draw persona. This is where it handles all the vector art. The 1st 3rd at least of this course, is going to be dedicated to working in this persona. Now, let's tap on this whole collection of dots up here. They see how it just became those blue dots. This is what is called the pixel persona. Now the pixel persona is also referred to as the Raster persona. And then this 3rd 1 over here, you see how that just went blue? This is what is called the export persona. Now look over to the left hand side of your screen. You'll see as I move through the pixel persona the tools on the left hand side change and you'll see here that when I moved to the draw persona, I get another set of tools. So these are the three personas that affinity designer has, and this is what makes it so powerful as an alternative to say, a photo shop and illustrator hybrid. All right, now let's explain what these two things are for a couple minutes. Vector art is based on math. It is scalable. Now there's nothing you have to do here. You just have to watch. I'm gonna grab this pen tool. I don't put down what's called a node, and then I'm gonna come over here and I'm gonna draw another node and another node and another node. And now I'm going to keep going until I form a closed path and this becomes a shape. Now watch this with my move tool selected. I can resize this shape. And because the shape is based on math, I can resize it to the size of a billboard. Or if my printer can do it, I can put it on the head of a pin. This is different than opposed to a pixel or a raster based. Now let's see what the difference is here. So I'm gonna go ahead and I'm just gonna delete this To delete a shape you come down to the far right hand side of left hand side, see the garbage can and tap on the garbage can. Perfect. Now let's go to the pixel air the pixel Later. On the other hand, I'm just gonna grab a brush. I'm gonna grab a color over here and I'm going to just begin painting. Now we zoom in super duper, duper small. Hopefully you guys can see this at home. You'll see that there's a lot of squares that begin to occur. You see, How was I? Get away from the red. The squares really become visible. This is what is called picks. Elation and the limitation of raster based art is that if you scale it picks, elation occurs. So you really have to work very close to your original size that you're gonna work on when you actually print. So if this thing is 1920 by 10. 80 and you scale it to the sides of a billboard, it's going to pixel ate, and it's going to look like garbage. So my advice to you, a finicky designer is a vector based program vector. Art is not prone to pixel ization, and you can scale it. So we're gonna work primarily in vector with a pixel based secondary focus. All right, that's a little bit about how those things work. You now have an open space. Let's go back in, which to explore. And now we're going to start filling in this canvas right when we get back, I'm gonna go ahead. I'm gonna swap back over to my vector art, and I'm going to delete that Rast arise shape. All right, now the last thing I want to show you before we cut this lesson, notice that I'm scaling this just like this. The way I'm doing that is I'm pinching from the outside in, and then I'm moving my fingers from the inside out to scale it back up. This is the beauty of working on iPad, folks is you can scale it and zoom it at your leisure. So that is the first gesture that you now know how to scale your sheet. All right, folks will see the next lesson.
3. How to get assistance and difference between shapes and lines : All right, gang, welcome back to finish the designer on the iPad. So in the last lesson, we have this 1920 by 10 80 workspace. You guys know how to create this and you know about the three personas. Now, let's go ahead and talk about where to get some help on this. Because this course, while geared toward beginners, affinity designer can get a little complex. So I just want to give you to place to go to get assistance. The 1st 1 is affinity forums. Now, affinity forums are awesome. So this is a forum dot affinity dot saref dot com. And these guys are the technical gurus. Four affinity. So if you have technical questions, I may not be able to answer them here on you to me, because I'm not the one that is the programming behind the scenes on software. I can certainly answer some technique questions, but if you need help on the technical side, definitely hit this group up because they have a lot more on the tech than I do. All right, so the other place you could go to get some help is if you go into your designer and Let's go ahead and jump back one. So, you see, we still have our untitled picture right there in the upper left hand side in the gallery. Hit on the question mark up here in the upper right hand column. Look at all of the helpful things they have in terms of helping you out when you get stuck in the program. Now, I certainly want you guys to come to me. Certainly hit me up in the Q and a section here. But if you can't get to me, if you're not around WiFi and you can't get anything going, definitely check this out. This is a great, helpful resource. All right, so there's two places to go to get help. Now, let's go ahead and get into it. The first thing we're gonna do we're gonna get you going on an actual project using shapes . Now, the two techniques they have to understand before we can really hit the ground running our shapes and layers. So let's go ahead and talk about shapes in this lesson. Now I showed you before that you just have to follow along here. If you hit the pen tool, it creates a line right, and you can certainly draw all day with the pen tool. Now if you hit the move, tool that up there in the upper left hand areas called the move tool. And then if we come down and we delete that is what is called a line forming a closed path . Now what I haven't showed you yet. Take a look at the left hand side and you see on mine it's right above the A with the square on it. That little square is what is called this shape tool, and right now it's on the rectangle. But when you click on the little drop down arrow on the lower right hand corner, all of your other shapes come up. So let's go ahead and grab a circle. Now, when you grab a circle and you drag out a circle, you'll see how mine turns red with kind of a pinkish outline. Take a look over at the right hand side of the workspace and you'll see a red filled circle . All shapes have a fill and a stroke. So to manipulate the Phil, come around the outside and just turn the outside where you want it and then turn the inside where you want it. We'll talk about what all these things are later, and then the stroke is right here. It's that little red squiggle on my screen. We're gonna come over here and we're gonna grab the color. Now you see that there was the purple color reused. Watch this click on the hollow circle, The donut looking one. This is your stroke. So you see that nothing's really happening with it. You can't really see the yellow. That's because if I'm in my stroke panel, I don't have my width up. So a shape has a stroke. And, Phil, you get to the stroke in the fill, using the right hand side of the interface. You see where the purple circle is and the yellow squiggle and then with the purple. When you click on it, you've got the hollow donut looking thing up here that's yellow, and you've got the purple filled in shape. The purple filled in is obviously the pill. The yellow is the doughnut shape. So what we're gonna do here, we're going to begin working with shapes in order to create our first project. But you have to know where to find them, and you have to know how they differ from a line. We're not gonna deal with lines right now. You guys are gonna be working with shapes for a couple lessons. Still. So now let's go ahead now and draw another one. Let's go to our lips tool. Let's grab the Ellipse tool. And I know we just had it selected, but I want you to get used to go in there to select. And now watch this notice how I play with it and it starts becoming an oval. Take your left hand, put one finger on the screen and now you see the blue circle that was just created. That's because my finger is here and now on pulling a perfect circle. So right off the bat, you guys know now how to create a perfect circle as a shape using affinity designer for the iPad and you learned your second gesture. So let's take a look at the gesture count. Right now you've got the expand and contract or the zoom in the shrink, and now you know how with the shape to create a theoretical perfect shape. All right now to move this thing. Let's go to our move tool. And this thing is in the upper right hand column. You see the the little blue selector. So I'm just gonna hit this again and you see how it's showing. Move toe the little blue selectors there. I'm gonna go ahead. I'm gonna move this thing around now. Now let's practice changing the Phil. We go from purple. How do we go from purple to another field color? Come over to here and we swipe around. Oops. And I went into the area of my line and let's go ahead, make the line green. All right, You know what? I'm gonna swap back to my fill. Don't make this bright red there. We g o All right, Problem solved. Problems stay unsolved. So now on the screen, you should have two circles. One of them is an oval. One of them is a circle and one of them should be read and one of them should be purple. And the line colors should be yellow and green. Alright, folks, let's go ahead and cut this lesson here in this lesson, you learned a little bit about where to go to get help for affinity. Designer. You learned the difference between a lining shape and you laid out your first digital art on the page. All right, we'll see in the next one.
4. The basics of the interface: All right, gang. And welcome back to affinity designer. So let's go ahead and make this a quick one here. We want to teach you just a little bit about where to go to get the right terms in order for you to be able to troubleshoot the interface. So let's go ahead and snap into our plus sign. Let's go ahead and create in your document. And now we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna create for Web. We're gonna go ahead and we're gonna make this 1000 by 1000 and we're gonna keep the DP I at 72. Let's go ahead and hit, OK, All right. Now, when you take a look at the interface, all of this down along the left hand side is what is called the tools. So you've got the move tool. You see that? It's flexing their you've got the no tool. You've got the corner tool, you've got the pencil tool. So there's a lot of tools and I want to show you that based on which persona urine and again, you guys know where to find the personas right up above the left hand side. Here. You see, how it's flexing between these three blue dots. If you're in the draw persona, there's one set of tools along the left hand side. If you are in the pixel persona, there's a completely different set of tools along the left hand side. And if you're in the export persona completely different now there's a little three button dot up here. That's where all of your add subtract, intersect, convert curves. All of that goodness is held. And then there's what's called the document menu up here. This looks like a document with three dots where you convert save print, turn on and off your snapping, so we'll talk a lot about that later. And then in the lower left hand corner, you'll see that you've got your ex. You've got your magnet so turning on, snapping, turning off, snapping. You see how that's flexing and you've got the delete key. You see how that's moving right there? All right, so that's really what's going on in the left hand side. Now you can hit the back area to get back to the gallery. Let's go ahead and move back into our draw persona. You see, that were in the drop persona. And now, if I flip down a tool, the context to a bar, which is all the options that tool has, is at the bottom of the screen in affinity. Designer for the iPad, we're used to it being a top in the desktop virgin it's not. It's down here at the bottom, so you'll see for the move tool down along the bottom. You've got the select under place over the no tool has all your note options. So that's where all of your context to a bar is. The last thing that I want to show you here to keep this really short is over. On the right hand side are all your studio panels. So up here in the upper right hand corner, you can hide them. So if you decide to hide him, that's how you hide him. And then just to bring him out, this is how you select him, so they're all here. So when I say go to your studio, I'm talking about the right hand side, so that's a little bit about how to work with the interface before we get started. So let's go ahead and get into projects that matter. All right, we'll see the next one
5. Basics of Layers in Affinity Designer for ipad : all right, gang time for the next lesson here. Now, this the last one we're gonna need before we get started, this one is going to be all about layers. Now, whether you like a finicky designer or not, whether or not you use illustrator whether or not you use sketchbook all digital art is based on this idea of layers, so getting layers down is absolutely essential. And if you used any type of Photoshopped program or any illustrated program in the past, you gonna see some familiarity. But if you haven't, let's go and take a look at this. Now the layers panel is over on the right hand side, and it's right below the brush. So you see where the red circle is and the green line. And then there's a little brush click right there on the layer. Now, the layers panel here works very, very similar to how it doesn't the desktop version layers work in a high Arkle fashion. Now what does that mean? That means that the red layer here the ellipse is on top of the purple one. Now I can prove this. If you grab your ready lips and you move it over top of the purple that covers it. You see how that they're layered up almost like sheets of paper stacked on top One another . Now, if I decide to move it, watch this click and hold. Drag it down. Now you see what the blue line is doing. You want the blue line to be 100% below it. Now watch what I mean here. If I take this up, you see how this became a blue square. Don't do that. That is what is called nest to get inside of their forms. A mask. So you want to make sure that it goes above or below 100% of the time. See how it's going to the blue line Right here. All right. Make sure you're there. All right, So now let's go ahead and drop the red down to the bottom. And now, let's go ahead with our move to a selected and put the purple over top of the red. That is how you move layers. So you know how to move a layer. You know how the higher Claire structure works. Let me show you how to make a layer visible click on Click off the little check mark. All right, so that's how you make a layer visible. And now let's go ahead and show you how to delete a lair When you have the blue Ellipse. Let's say I should say the purple lips. I'm sorry. Had a momentary color blindness there. We're gonna go up, and we're gonna make sure the purple ellipsis selected and I'm gonna hit the garbage can. All right, See? Gone Deleted. Now let's say you really didn't want to do that. Here's the third gesture. Go ahead, take your two fingers and touch the screen. Hope it's back. Like magic. The two finger undo folks is absolutely the best thing with the affinity for the iPad. So it's very similar to procreate. And now let's say you did want to delete it. Take three fingers and tap the screen. The three finger redo now. So let's bring two fingers in undue three fingers Redux. Two fingers undo. There we go. That's how that works. We're gonna be using that a lot. You'll see me use that a lot. And since this came out, I've been using that a lot. All right, so let's take a look here to add a lair. Now you see over by the garbage can There's the plus sign. We're gonna go ahead and we're gonna add just a vector layer. We're gonna talk about pixel versus vector layers here a little bit later, but vector layer. And now you've created a new layer, and now you can draw on said new layer. So let's go ahead. Let's draw 30 lips. Hold notice. I'm holding to make it symmetrical. And now what just happened here? You see that this is interesting. Now let's make this layer. Let's go ahead and turn it so we can talk about it in terms of its color. All right, this is now the blue lips. Now where my layer structure go back here, you'll see that there's a little twirly down thing. You see it moving here on the right hand side, you'll see how this layer is what is called nested now inside of this layer. Now we'll talk about nesting here in a little bit, but if you click and drag and you move it outside, you can move it out of the nest. Now with this layer, it's empty, right? Let's go ahead and delete it. All right, Now we're stuck with three different ellipsis. Now let's say that you get the ellipses where you want him, and you wanna make what's called a group what you do, you take your apple pencil or your finger. You Right, swipe. Now you see how that ellipse one gray, right? Swipe that ellipse, right? Swipe this ellipse. That's how you select an ellipse. And now I see this thing Looks like a puzzle piece here group. All right, What just happened now? Before they were three independent individual airs. Now, when we move it, let's grab our move tool. So I'm coming up to the left hand side and begin to move it around. Perfect. All right, that's the power of grouping. Now let's say we want ungroomed. You could do it a couple different ways. I'm gonna show you this way cause it's super easy. We're gonna grab this layer and we're just gonna drag it outside. We're gonna make it easy. We're not gonna go into complicated stuff here. Nothing's worse than when you take a course, and they talk about keyboard shortcuts and doing all this weird stuff right now. we're just focusing on fundamentals. So that's how you remove him from a group. And then once you don't need the group anymore, go ahead and delete it. Now, let's take a look at his little circle here with the three dots Layer has some different aspects. We're gonna be all into these here in a little bit. So we're not gonna spend too much time, but turn down the opacity of a layer. You find it here to adjust the blend mode of a layer, You find it here with the visible. I'm sorry. Up here, there we go. With the normal and then to turn on and off the visibility you can also do. This year, I'm gonna show you how to lock. Aware. Locking the layer doesn't allow you to move it, adjust it, change it at all. Now, that's good until you realize you want to. And then you forget it's locked and you spend 15 minutes trying to undo it. All right, So to get back hit right up there by layer options, click back on the back arrow and there you are again. And then here, right next to the thumbtack. You've got all of the different options that you've got for that layer that we just talked about. So that's another way to get there. All right, that's enough on layers. We spent seven minutes talking about layers. Let's go ahead and put some pixels on the paper, all right, we'll see the next one.
6. Basics gestures in ipad : All right, folks. And welcome back to affinity designer here. So one of the things that makes the iPad so awesome is the ability to actually use your hands. Now, for the majority of the course, we're gonna be using the apple pencil, which I think is one of the best stylist is out there. However, I'm gonna go ahead in each lesson in this course here in each section. I'm gonna go ahead. I'm gonna show you some gestures, but the gestures aren't meant to replace the instruction. Some people like to use the apple pencil like myself. Some people like to work in gestures, so let's go ahead and check out the four gestures you're going to need in this early portion of the course. So to do this, let's go ahead and start by dragging out a rectangle. Okay, so we've got a rectangle drug out here. Now what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna put the pencil down. All right, let's move that off camera. So now what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna show you first and foremost. We're just gonna select somewhere outside of the rectangle and then making sure I'm on the white portion. I'm going to go ahead and pinch and expand this section. Now, this is different. If I was to say grab this, I might be able to pinch and expand it. But I might also be grabbing and manipulating this particular thing. So you want to make sure if you're doing this, that you're in the workspace now you'll see me a lot of times rotated in order to rotate. You just grab it and you twist just like this. All right, so now let's say that I want to grab another shape. So I want to drag out a 2nd 1 of these. But now I don't want to do that. I want to physically undo you. Take two fingers and you just tap on the screen. Now that is the two finger undo The alternative Now is what is called the three finger redux. Three fingers brings it back, two fingers, takes it away, three fingers brings it back, all right. And then you could, of course, go down and weaken trash That particular thing down in the lower left hand corner of we so wanted. So you now know how to rotate the canvas. How to expand and contract using gestures, how to undo and redo using the two or the three finger method The last thing that I want to show you here, let's go ahead and kill this. We're gonna go ahead and going to drag out another shape this time to drag out any lips. But now watch this. When I pushed my finger down, you see the little blue dot that's created. Now it opens up as a completely symmetrical circle. If I remove my finger now, we can manipulate it anyway we want. When I put my finger down, I drag it out in perfect aspect ratio 1 to 1. Oops. Go ahead with the move to well selected here and just move this thing over. All right, so that's a little bit on gestures in these three minutes. Those are the only for that you need right now for this portion of the course. All right, let's go ahead and get back into the art folks.
7. Making the Smiley face part 1 : Alright, folks, let's go ahead and get started and start putting what we're doing here into practice. So I've got my gallery open here. We're gonna go ahead and we're gonna create a 12 80 by 800 pixel document. Now, you guys know how to do this? We went through the basics, and we're gonna make this really cool smiley face using only what, you know, working in shapes and mostly using layers. So let's go ahead. And it started. First thing I'm going to do, I'm gonna come over here and I'm going to pick on my shape, too, And I'm gonna draw on the lips. Now we pull this ellipse out, we're gonna go ahead and a place in my finger on the canvas. And now you see that I'm getting some weird behavior in the line. That's because earlier I just had this lineup. We're gonna go ahead and we're gonna move this back up, and we're gonna go ahead and drop this down. All right, Now you see how we edited this stroke and we're gonna go ahead. We're gonna make this circle bright yellow. Let's go ahead and make it this color yellow. Here perfect. Now with our move Tool selected. Let's go ahead And senators Bad boy up. Now, You see, I've got my snapping on and again snapping is down in the lower left hand corner. Now, let's go ahead and check out our layers panel. We have an Ellipse. Let's go ahead and rename this. Let's go ahead with the layer options and let's go ahead and call this smiley face. All right? Perfect. Now let's go ahead and make an I So we're gonna come down here where you grab the Ellipse tool and I'm in a click and drag out another lips. Now, this one, I'm gonna come upto where my yellow circle is. That's my colors panel. And I'm gonna go ahead and adjust the color and I'm going to go ahead now to my three dots over here in the upper column here and I'm going to duplicate And that ellipse I'm going to make black now what I want to do, I want to shrink that. So I'm going to use my apple pencil. I'm gonna grab the corner and I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna shrink this down, and then I'm gonna find somewhere in the centre. Oops. Now noticed something to use to finger undo. I want to make sure my move tool selected. Hey, there we go, and I'm gonna move it into position. Now let's take a look at our layers panel. Now I have an Ellipse and I have this lips. Let's go ahead and renamed the Black Lips. Let's call it pupil, get okay, and now we want to go ahead and we want to duplicate that layer. So let's go ahead and duplicate that layer with our move tool. Selected folks grab it, shrink it. And now let's go ahead and shrink it down until we get to right about here. And then let's go ahead and let's fill it white. All right, looks good. Now let's go ahead and we're gonna leave the line on it for a moment. Let's go ahead and create an I. So to do this, we want to change this in Lips Lair. Here, you see, this is the biggest one. Tap on the three dots come up to where it says it lips and let's title it. I perfect. And now let's drag the pupil inside. To do that, we go into the blue line goes in the middle, just like that. And we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna move this layer inside of there. So make sure you grab it. Make sure the blue line is over the I and let's go ahead and rename that. We're gonna call this one. We're gonna hit three dots. We're to call this highlight. Okay? Perfect. Now the I needs a color, right? So to do that, here is the easiest way to do it. Now that you have your layer structured, let's go to the pupil lair. Let's duplicate the pupil air and let's go ahead. And I'm gonna title this a highly technical term. I'm gonna call this the color. All right, We're gonna lead out, and we're going to go color. Beautiful. All right, Now we want to make this a little bit bigger, so let's go ahead and make that a little bit larger, and we're gonna go ahead. We're gonna make this green, so let's go ahead and make that green. And now you see how that blotted out the black? Go back to the layer panel over here on the right hand side and bring it down below the pupil. Perfect. Now the last thing were to do, we're gonna come up to highlight. And previously I had said, Leave a stroke on, Let's go ahead and turn the stroke to nail. You can either move down the width or you can hit on this No stroke. And then we're gonna come over to the F X panel. Now, we haven't showed you this before. You're gonna turn on go Schindler, and then you're gonna tap it and you see how it went, Grey. Now slide the apple pencil across the screen and you see how that blurred out the line. So that gives you a nice soft highlight in here. I tend to like that look, so I'm going to use it. And now the last thing we're gonna do, just kind around this out. Let's go ahead, select the I come over and duplicate the entire thing. Grab the move tool and away it goes. And folks, we now have two eyes on our smiley face. So let's go ahead. Stop the video here. Notice all the techniques that we used there. We pulled out the shape, the yellow, the lips. We then titled the Ellipse. Let's take a look at Air Layers panel. We created one eye and finished an entire I. And then we just duplicated the eye that focuses a rather professional move there. There's no reason to do two eyes. Get the I the 1st 1 the way you want and then just replicated. All right, folks, that's a little bit on how to start this design. Let's go ahead and take the next step, and we'll show you how to kind of add in some really cool textures into it and some highlights. All right, we'll see the next one.
8. Making the Smiley face part 2 : All right, folks. Welcome back to affinity Designer. So one of the basics that comes across in affinity designer is the need for good naming habits. Take a look at the structure that we've created. When you're vector, art gets really super crazy you're gonna want and you're gonna hope, and you're gonna wish that you had engaged in good naming habits. So when we're in the layers panel one of the reasons that I make sure that I'm super anal about my naming is because when you get 70 or 80 layers deep, you're gonna want to make sure that you got this covered. All right, let me show you how to add a really cool highlight to your yellow sphere here. So I'm gonna take my two fingers, and I'm gonna go ahead and just zoom in a little bit and I'm gonna now grab the pencil tool . Now, watch what happens here because I want this to be kind of a roundish area. I'm gonna take my pencil tool and I'm gonna pull a highlight and you'll notice that I've got something called the stabilizer on. I'm gonna show you where to go to get that in a second, and I'm just gonna go ahead and draw in a highlight. Now you'll see at the bottom of the interface you have what's called the context to a bar. You see where it says sculpt with stroke and it's black. Here's we're going to do We're to click on use, Phil. We're gonna then change the fill over the white. We're gonna turn the stroke off. End the stabilizer that I used when I clicked on this arrow. Here, you'll see how the rope stabilizer came into effect. That's where that rope stabilizer came from. Now let's look at our layers. You'll see how it created what's called the curve. And now to a lair, you're going to apply the same Goche in blur effect. So come over to your FX panel. You see it highlighted here, make sure the blue switches engaged, click on the go shin blur and then make sure that you add as much go shin blur as makes sense for this particular image. All right, I kind of like that once you're good. Come back to the layers panel and now we're gonna nest this curve layer exactly like we did the other we're gonna nest that though. Inside of the Ellipse. You see where this is? Pau? All right, Now I like the highlight we got in here, But again, we have to shade this sphere, so I'm gonna show you something. Brand new. One of the things that makes affinity designer so powerful is this pixel persona. Here. You see how we just swapped to the pixel persona? It's highlighting the pixel. Now, this is going to be restaurant, Remember? Earlier recovered the difference between Vector and RASTER. We're gonna use pixel art just to show you how this works. So I'm gonna come over to my brush, see my brushes right here. I'm clicking on it. It's paint brush tool. I'm gonna come over to my brush icon, which is now over in the right hand side of the studio. We're gonna go ahead and we're gonna grab Well, I don't know. Let's grab in the sprays and splatters. Let's grab the airbrush four. All right, Now notice the context toolbar down here. I'm gonna crank up the width of the brush to do that. I'm just dragging with my apple pencil over to the right, and I want this thing pretty large. And now when I paint, I always turned down my opacity. I want the opacity to be somewhere around 50% and I always want my flow to be 50% and I'm gonna take my hardness then nothing. I don't want a hard edge on this thing at all. Now I'm going to zoom out a little bit and now I'm gonna choose the color. Now we're painting and yellow, right? But I wanted to be a little darker. Now here's a little tip on color. Go over in the hue, which is this outer ring. And let's grab something that is just a hair darker. Right? I'm gonna go right about here with the orange. Now watch this. This is a trick here. Notice Here. It says it added a new raster layer. Let's take a look at layers. You'll see that a new layer, but a pixel air has been created. Now I'm going to begin by painting outside of my object. Now you see how it's not going anywhere outside. Let's take a look at the layer. You see why it's not because it's embedded in the smiley face. If you have a problem with this. Watch this. This is a trick. Click the layer, move it up. And now you can paint and you get a really nice shadow on it. Now, don't worry about painting over, right. That's fine. And because my capacity is so low, I'm able to move this up relatively gradually. Okay, Now, I'm gonna go ahead and up the color just a little bit here. And you see, I'm making it just a hair darker, and I'm just going to come down to the side here, okay? And this is why I've got my soft brush on. Okay, Now, once you get it, kind of the way you want it, watch this. Grab the pixel air, nest it back inside and Pau Instant mask. That's how a pixel air works. Now you'll notice this is not a shape. This is not a curve. Which means once you do it in pixel, you kind of bought it. Now I'm gonna take my eraser brush and my eraser brush. I'm gonna go ahead and up this size just a little, and I want a little bit of hardness on my eraser brush. But I want to keep the opacity down again at 50%. Now, watch what happens with this racer brush, because this is a circle, and you should have a little bit off highlight around here. I'm gonna go ahead and just erase on the side, all right? I think that is a good, nice, soft shade. Now, you could have created a curve, done it in brown, and you could have worked 100% in Vector. That's absolutely away home. I wanted to show you, though, how to work in pixel and how to adjust your brush a little bit in this introductory lesson . All right, let's go ahead. Swap back into our vector mod cut the lesson here, and then let's go ahead and finish up and make a couple more features on this smiley face using shapes. All right, we'll see in the next one.
9. How to save export and share your work: project. I thought it will be a nice time right now to interject how to go ahead and save and probably the top two formats that you're going to save an affinity designer. So I wanted to take about five minutes. I promise. This lesson won't take long. Let's go ahead and get into it so you can take any piece of artwork that you've got here, right? And in our case, we've got this ball, we want to go ahead and we're gonna grab the Ellipse, and we're gonna move the ball around, right? Just like that. Now, if we wanted to save this, I'm gonna show you first and foremost. You go up here and you go to save ass and save a copy. So this is what's gonna start, and I'm gonna go ahead and change the file name and you just delete it will call this blue Orbe one. All right. Perfect. Now we hit the return key. Now we hit save, and now it's gonna go ahead and it's gonna ask you where you want to save it. This interfaces with Dropbox Dropbox and the iPad are friends. There's a whole lesson on how to interface with Dropbox. But in reality I want to save it in the end of the iPad course, and I hit ad. So now it's safely off my iPad and into my Dropbox. Now let's say here we now want to export. Exporting is differently than saving. So let's go export. And now a whole lot of options come up. We're gonna talk about exporting much later in the course, but you're going to need to know how to get started right now. The two most common formats you're going to use RJ pig, which is a loss formula, which means it will flatten it out. That means no more layers notice. Here you can save it for a certain height than a certain width. You can save the quality and it will estimate right above that, OK, and cancel with the bottom. So just swipe down. Let's say we want to do it. It's 72% quality. It will estimate the file size. I like to save mine it right around 85%. If I'm going, J Peg, there's no reason to go to 100% and then you change the file name. So we're gonna call this, It's go ahead and Google Eat this out. Blue orb J pig. Now you'll see right above here. When we hit return, you'll see that there's a white color. It's called Matt J. Peg does not have a transparent background option. So most the time. If you are going to save into J. Peg, you don't get a transparent background and most the time you save because the file sizes tend to be a little bit smaller because you're flattening out all those layers. And then when you're done, go ahead and hit OK? And again, we're gonna save it in Dropbox, and I'm going to save it here and I'm gonna add away. It goes now, the last format we're gonna do here before we cut this out, we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna export against. We go to our document menu and we hit export. But now we can save as a P and G. Now, this is a huge win here, right? PNG supports transparency. So if I want to change the background color, I could or let me just show you how this works, I can grab my move tool I can select my orb. And now I can change the document background. They're going through the document menu. Click on canvas, make it transparent. And now, when I export, I'm going to be able to go ahead and export the area. Now watch this. See that? There is an option selection without background and go ahead and hit. OK? And now we're gonna go, and we're gonna save that to Dropbox, and I'm going to save it in my same area. All right. Hey, Dad. Beautiful problem. Solve problems. Stand solved. Now, the last thing that I want to show you there are gonna be times in this course where I ask you to take a screenshot. In order to do that, you hit the wake sleep button on your iPad and you press the power button at the same time for just a moment. Now watch what happens. That is the screenshot that is now captured. And now that folks is going to be in your photos, all ready to rock right there. All right, so in this lesson, that's five minutes long. We went. Showed you how to do the basic export jpeg. We showed you how to do a basic PNG export. We showed you how to do a basic screenshot, and we kind of explained how these things work. All right, folks, let's go ahead and get into the next lesson and work on a project.
10. Making the Smiley face part 3 - Completing : All right, gang, welcome back to if any designers, Let's go ahead and finish up this smiley face here. So last lesson we showed you how to use a pixel air. And now let's check out our layering structure. Smiley face, I I within the smiley face pixel air curve layer. And the layers have effects added to him. So you know how to do ago, Shin Blur. All right, let's take the next step. So now what we're gonna do is we're gonna come over here and we're gonna make a mouth. Now to do that, I'm gonna use a shape, and I'm gonna go ahead. I'm gonna use a crescent, and I'm gonna pull the crescent. And now I need to rotate it. So I grab this little white handle here, and if I press on the screen, you'll notice how it orients itself to 90 degrees. And now the mouth needs to be filled with black. So I come over here and I fill the mouth with black. Now, why didn't that work notice? The crescent is embedded in the smiley face, so it's there, but we can't see it. So what we have to do is we have to move it. And once we move it, look at that. It comes into existence. Good for us. All right. So we get a good smiley face. Now, if you wanted to make changes, notice how the crescent tool. If I select it, I can adjust this smiley face a little bit. I can adjust this up and down. I can make him super surprised. I could make a little more or less Smiley. So that's how you adjust your shape. So our layer structure puts a crescent in there. Now, let's go ahead. Let's make another shape. Let's go ahead and make a heart. So we're gonna make a heart just like that, and I'm gonna go ahead. I'm gonna fill this heart now with pink. All right, Now, let's go ahead. Make this kind of a lighter pink. I think that's good. And now watch what happens here. We bring it in, and now we go to layers. We click on the heart and making sure the blue line is in the center. We've nested it in there, and if you miss it, just do it again. There we go. All right, Now it's good at this point to change the name of this crescent. To do that, you hit the three dots again. Click on Crescent. Call this mouth perfect. There we go. All right, now we want to shade out the mouth. So what I'm gonna do here now I'm going back into my pixel air. I'm grabbing my brush coming over again. I'm going to look in my brushes for my spray and spatter. I'm going to airbrush for and now I'm going to use a darker shade here of pink in order to shade this thing out. So now let's look at my layer, See where we are. Let's drop my brush size because that's a crazy brush size. And to do that, I'm just swiping over to the left and I'm keeping my opacity and my flow coming up here and now See, it's added a pixel air, and now I'm beginning just to shade down and around. Why hasn't got it going into the smiley face? Let's take a look at later because it's nested in the mouth. So I've got my nesting right and I'm just kind of shadowing out exactly what I'm doing here and you'll see how I'm pinching, rotating and adjusting, huh? Now, you see how this shade kind of just crested over that area. We're gonna have to fix that up here and show you how in just a second, we lost our shade there, must hit it with my hand, and and I go until I'm relatively happy. Okay? Think I'm relatively happy. Let's go ahead and check this out. We go to layer. Now, how would we ever mask the pixel air inside the tongue? It's click and drag. Beautiful. Problem solved. Problems stand soft. All right, One last thing I want to do with this here, Actually, two things. Let's go back to our vector layer. Let's go ahead and grab something else. We're gonna come over here and we're gonna go ahead and grab a Oh, I don't know. Let's go ahead and grab another crescent. Okay? Now we're gonna drag the crescent, and we're going to make sure on our Phil, and we're gonna fill this white Now you see that? That doesn't quite work. You have to click and drag it out because it put it directly inside. Oops. Let's go ahead and do that. You want to click and drag this outside. Here we go. Well, now we're outside. But unfortunately to the bottom of the stack, There we go. All right. And then I'm gonna go ahead and turn it. Hopes undo. Move it. And then stretch it until we've got some decent teeth there. All right. Looks good. Now, in order to to detail this notice the teeth were coming back into the pixel air. I've got my brush selected. I'm gonna grab kind of an off blue. Yeah, I think we're pretty good shape there. And now what I'm going to do, You see, it's added a pixel air. Where did it at it? Perfect. Go ahead and just brush this area in here. CEO, it's all the same. Technique Just applied a little bit differently time and time again. All right, so notice we've got the crescent with a nested pixel air. We've got the heart with nested layer. The last thing that I might want to do here if I really wanted to get crazy with it, is we want to come in with the lair. I'm gonna go over to this pixel air here. I'm staying in the pixel persona and I'm gonna go ahead of them in the grab this off brown that I've been working with. I'm gonna go ahead and crank up my brush size just ever so slightly. And now I'm gonna come in here and I'm just going to see what it looks like if I was just to shade out a little bit of a lip. Okay, Now, here's what I do. I like it on the bottom. I do not like it on the top. Said, Sam, I am. So I like this on the bottom. So, you see, I'm swapping back over to my brush, and now I'm just adding a little bit more definition here on this side. Okay? Now, the last thing that I might want to do so stay with me. You see this curve? I think it's a little bit out of place. I'm going to come over to my vector persona. I'm gonna grab my no tool, and you see how that this is touching. I'm gonna bring this down a little bit so that it's no longer touching. Now, here's something you may not know. If you select a node, you see the little garbage Candice's delete you can easily delete nodes in order to make this work the way you want. So I think that that is much nicer. And it stays quite a ways away from the mouth. All right, let's go ahead and call it a day here. I'm gonna come up. I'm going to save a copy. I'm coming over here. I'm deleting this out. I would call this a 1-080 Smiley three. And I'm saving it, and I'm saving it, and we're going into Dropbox. I'm gonna put it in my affinity ipad course. And I added in there and now I'm going to go up here. I'm going to my document menu, and I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna exported. So stay with me here. Export its 12 80 by 800 J pig. We're gonna go ahead and we're gonna hit. Okay, let's go ahead and change the final name. Delete this when I call this Smiley J. Peg and I'm gonna return and I'm gonna get okay, and I'm putting that in my dropbox. Good to go. Now, the last thing that I'm gonna show you here, we're gonna come down to canvas. We're gonna make it transparent. Now, you see how this just went through and erased all the background? I'm going to grab my move, tool. I'm selecting Onley my smiley face. And now I'm going to go ahead and I'm gonna export. But this time is a PNG. I'm gonna call this smiley PNG, Okay? And then I'm on Lee going to export the selection. But I'm going to do it without the background. And now you see this sides. It's 5 70.9 by 5 70.9 and we go ahead and return, and I hit, OK, And I add that to my dropbox and away it goes. So all of these files are gonna be available for you to download. This finishes up the smiley face. Hope you learn a little bit about working with pixel, working with vector, working with raster type art, how to shade it, how to create it. I had a good time doing it. Let's go ahead and get into some more advanced lessons if you're going forward. Of course. All right. We'll see in the next section, folks.
11. Interfacing with dropbox: All right, folks, welcome back to the iPad. So I gotta admit, I am not a fan of Apple. I don't have an iPhone. I don't much care for their computers. I'm a PC user through and through in an android guy until the day I die. But the iPad is one of the best tools out there. So while I might not like Apple, I definitely like this product. And with that comes the challenges of being a PC user with a Mac product. So I wanted to show you how to interface with Dropbox so that you can get your files off your iPad and into Dropbox. Now, if your Mac to Mac, you probably got this already figured out. You're probably using iCloud whatever it is that you decide to use. But I'm gonna show you kind of how this works. So let's go ahead and start with a screenshot. We're gonna go ahead and push the power button and the sleep awake button at the same time , and we have a screenshot created. All right, Perfect. Now, the easiest thing to do with this come into your dropbox. And now this is kind of what you're going to see. You'll notice you've got your standard Dropbox here. Go ahead and hit the create button. And now we're gonna go ahead and we're gonna upload this photo. So we come over to the photo, we find the photo that we want. By the way, the same process exists for video. Every video that I record here with my screen, I do the same thing and hit next. Now let's go ahead and call this file name. Let's call this blue orb example and that's a dot PNG, right, So we go ahead and had done. Now it's going to save the blue or example, and then you can save it in any folder that you want. So I'm gonna go ahead and save it in my affinity iPad course. Or you can choose a different folder if you so choose. So we're gonna come over here, I'm gonna set the location again. I'm looking for my affinity, affinity, iPad course. And we had upload and away it goes. So in the Dropbox interface, if you decide that you want to create new folders, just hit file right over here and then create create folder and you can then rename your folder. We're gonna call this pictures and we had done we create. And now there's a brand new folder and it's empty, so we can certainly load it. All right, that's just a little bit on Dropbox. I found a very challenging when I first started to get my stuff off my iPad into a workable format to go to PC. And I'll tell you, with affinity designer, they do a really sweet job. I have moved files off my iPad into the desktop software, and I have not had any problems whatsoever. Alright, folks, let's go ahead and get into the next lesson. Take the next step, see in the next one.
