1. Introduction: Good animation can be a wonderful tool to enhance the clarity of your message. This course contains six short walk through PowerPoint animation examples. Each one will provide you with understanding of a key animation feature that can be used to take your slide design to the next level. Some of the depot animations used in PowerPoint can be worse than having no animation at all. But using animation that supports the content can bring your slides to life and engage your audience. You will learn how to make this three D text and animate it with any rotation and color and create this impressive motion design effect. I will show you how to make these video style spinning effects by using multiple animations and explain how these abstract lines are created using a three D bevel and fluid animation. We'll make these fun, falling, rotating, and bouncing shapes, and we will finish by creating an interactive, vertically scrolling presentation that animates between every page. By the end of this course, you'll be able to apply the skills learned to create animations that you would have previously thought impossible in PowerPoint. So 2. Create and animate 3D text: For this example, we'll create this three D text and use the morph transition to animate it with any rotation and color. First thing we'll do is go for a blank presentation and choose layout blank. I'm going to paste in the gradient background I had just to save time. And now we can get started creating the three D text. So we'll get a textbox. Type three D text because we're original. Choose pop ins as the font, make it bold, and I'll go for 125 font size. Now we can align it to the middle, and I'm going to make the text color from this blue on the outside of the gradient. Now let's make the text three D. So we right click and go to format shape. From here, we have shape options and text options as the main sections. When you're working with three D text, you'll be wanting to apply some of the three D effects, such as the rotation to the shape options, and some of the three D effects to the text options. So firstly, let's add a rotation so we can see the three D effect. And all of the three D rotation is in shape options, effects, three D rotation. And for our example, I'm going to want to add perspective and that's grade out at the moment. So the only way to choose this is to go to a preset and select one of the perspectives to start with. So I can just select any one, such as front, and now you can see you can enter the perspective amount. And in my example, I actually want it to be 70 degrees. And now I can add the X rotation I need, which is 315 and the Y, which is 359. And now let's add the depth. If you go to three D format, you'll see there's depth in here. However, because we're in the shape options, that would only apply the depth to the shape itself, which is this rectangle. And because it's transparent, if I entered anything in here, you wouldn't see it. So if we want to make the text three D itself, we have to make sure to go to the text options and then choose text effects. And we need to add our depth here. And I'm going to select 25 point. And I'm going to choose the color for this, go to the eyedrop at all, and choose the yellow that's in the middle of our gradient in the background. Nice. I'm now going to go to material and choose this option here, soft edge. And finally, in the three D format, I'm going to add a very small top bevel. On the height of two point. And you'll see it's automatically put in the width, but I want that to be zero, this just creates a nice front edge that looks even more three D. And then I'm going to go to the lighting section. Again, we're on text options. And I'm going to choose this one here, two point, which provides less of a shine and more of a subtle effect that I think looks really good. I'm also going to add a reflection. I can pick a preset for this, and now I'm going to increase the blur to 12 point. Looking good. Now, let's add some animation. So if we go to the slides on the left, press Control D to duplicate and make sure that the second slide has the transition set to morph. I'm also going to take the duration down to 1 second. Then we go back to the first slide. I'll zoom out a little bit. I'll pick up my three D text and move it down. So at the moment, the text will slide up from the bottom, but we can also rotate it to make it a more interesting effect. So if we go to format shape, choose the shape effects option, go down to rotation. I'm effectively going to turn these around to make this 350, 318 or do. And now when we play this, you'll see that it slides in and rotates at the same time, which is a pretty cool effect. Now I'm going to show you how you can animate to different rotations of the three D text and change the colors to get any effect you're looking for. So we'll click Control D again to duplicate the slide. This time, I'm going to choose a grayish gradient. Something like this will do. I'm going to change the text color to a gray and then I'm going to go to text options, text effects, and I can change my depth to a very dark color. Something like that looks pretty good. And now I'm just going to choose some different rotation. So for this one, I'm going to type in 56 and for the z rotation, 359 and change the perspective to 80. I'll just move this roughly in the middle. And then when we play from the second slide, you'll see that it will rotate and change the color at the same time. Nice. We'll do one final example and change the effect on this text slightly. Go into text options, text effects, and then, for example, under material, we could change it from the one we're currently on, which is plastic down to one of these translucent such as translucent powder, the first one. Then we'll control D on the slides to create a second slide that it will transition to, and we'll change the rotation on this slide. We'll go into three D effects, and then choose three D rotation. For this one, I'm going to select 290 X rotation, naught Y rotation. And ten z. And again, we'll move it roughly into the middle. So now when we play from this slide, you can see how it nicely transitions using the morph option. And for example, if you wanted to make this one lighter, we can just increase the brightness a bit of this. And I'll go into the text color and make it a slightly lighter color. And then you can see how it automatically will transition between them with a very smooth effect using morph. And you can try any three D effect you want. I would recommend using different rotations and different colors because if you try and morph between things like depth or bevels, it won't work correctly, and PowerPoint will just fade between them and not give this smooth effect. So try out things like rotation and changing colors, and you can use any text and any colors you like. I 3. Make video style spinning effects by using multiple animations: I'll show you how to make these video style spinning effects by using different shapes and applying multiple animations to them. The first thing we'll do is go to a blank presentation, choose layout, blank. And in this example, we're going to start with a black background. So right click, go to format background, solid fill, and choose black. For our first example, we're going to just draw a simple circle. So we'll go to Oval, click anywhere. Go to the size. I'm going to make this 10 centimeters. Align it to the middle of the page, then go to fill, make sure it's on no fill and underline. I'm going to make this first one, this bright blue color. Now we're going to go to the effects and add a glow to this because I think that adding a glow gives it this nice, blurry motion effect when it's animating. So we'll go to effet glow. Make sure we choose the same color as the line, and I'm going to just select five point. In my example at the beginning, I just had this text box that just said one. And now let's add the animation. We'll go to animations and we'll choose wheel, and you'll see this drawout. When we go to the animation pane, we want these to start automatically. So we're going to select with previous. I'm going to make this 2.5 seconds. And then I'm going to add a second animation, this time, an exit animation. Wheel again, and this will remove it. We'll go to start, choose with previous, change it to 2.5 seconds, and then make sure that there's a delay of 2.5 seconds. So this will mean that the wheel animation will reveal, and when it's finished, it will do the exit animation. So we'll select a 2.5 second delay for this. And now if I play this slide, you can see it will reveal round. And then wipe off. And then we want to add a third animation. And this is an emphasis animation called spin. So we'll go to add animation. It's very important you go to add animation. Otherwise, if you click any of these, it will replace the animation. So we'll go to add. Under emphasis, we'll choose spin. We'll make this happen with previous, and we'll drag it up to the top. I'm going to set the duration to 1 second, and then I can double click on this. Go to timing and choose to repeat five times. And what that will do is it will spend 1 second rotating five times. And the reason I've done that is so that it takes 5 seconds in total. Which matches the time of these two animations here, which were 2.5 seconds each. So now, when we play this, we get this really fast, good looking animation. And now, I'll show you how you can quickly duplicate this slide and make variations of it using the change shape feature. So I'll click on the slide, press Control D, type two in this box. Click on our circle, go to shape format, then edit shape, change shape, and choose rectangle. That will create this square. Now we'll go and change the color. So make sure it's selected. Go to Shape Outline and choose our other color. And we also want to right click format shape and make sure that the glow is also using that color. So we'll go to color and pick the same color for the glow. And then the same color for the text. Now when we run this, the effect will be applied automatically, and you can change the speed to suit. And in my example, I wanted this to go a lot faster. So I can actually go to the animation pane, and I could change all the timings, but I know they work. So to make this faster, I can just go to the first option, which is the rotation and change it from 360 degrees to two spins, which is 720 degrees. So that's effectively just going to double the speed. So when I run that, I'll quickly just create the other two examples. So again, Control D to duplicate, shape format, edit shape, change shape, and then select any shape you like. I used this X, we can scale that up a bit. If you hold Control and Shift, it will scale like this from the center, and then we can change the number to three. And for this one, I just chose this orange color, and again, we need to do shape outline. And you can leave it like that if you wish, or if you want to have it the same color, you can go to glow and make sure that you change that too. Now when we play it, we get this cool fast animation. And now quickly the final one, control to duplicate, change this to number four. For this, we just used a green. I'll make sure that shape outline is green. And the glow is set to green. And then shape format, edit shape, change shape. We can change this shape to anything that looks good. For my example, I happen to use this called plaque. For this one, we can size it down a bit. Again, click on the corner handle and hold down Control and Shift, then we can size it from the center. Now, when we run this animation a clever way of using multiple animations to create interesting effects directly in PowerPoint. 4. An impressive motion design text effect from scratch: In this example, I'll show you how to make this impressive motion design text effect. As usual, the first thing we'll do is go file new blank presentation. Then we'll right click on the background and go to Layout and choose Blank. Now we'll add the text. And I want to write design in my example, and I'm going to use 15 characters for this animation. So I'll just put in 15 Ds really quickly. This is just so that we can animate them up and down and have enough, and we're going to use the font pop ins and the font size 210 point. We'll make this bold, and then we'll go to the line spacing options. Go to multiple, and I'm going to choose 0.61, so they're nearly touching. I'm going to position this in the far left. And then using shift and control, I'm going to click and drag to make a duplicate. So this will be my E. Yes. I. G. Finally. So there's all the letters I need for the animation, and I'm now going to make the text a tiny bit bigger, just to fit most of the screen. So I'll go for 290. And I'm going to position the D to the left here, then select the other characters and move them over to the right for now, so we can get the kerning right, which is the space between the letters. We'll just drag these manually to what we think looks like the right amount of space between the letters. The text is looking good. Now let's make the background black and change it to outlines for some of the letters. So if we write click anywhere on the background, we can go to format background, and then choose black. Now Control A will select all of the characters. And for those, I'm going to go to Text Options, choose textOline, solid outline, then make sure white is selected, I'm going to make this three with round caps. So that's looking good. I just want to fill in some of these as white for the design I've chosen. So I'm just going to select them one at a time and click to fill them in. Great. So we'll just go full screen, and this will be the end of the animation. So now I press Control A, select everything, go to animations, a animation and choose motion path lines. That will by default, move everything down very slightly. And now if we click to reveal the animation pane, we can right click while these are all selected, go to effect options and choose Auto reverse. So this will move them down and then back up again. Now, if I zoom out a bit, I can hold control and use the mouse wheel to do this. We use this slider at the bottom here. But if we click on the D, I'm going to make this one go up instead so I can go to effect options and choose it up. I want it to move more. And to do that, I click on the red triangle, and then I hold down shift, and drag the red dot, and now that's going to go up quite a lot more. So I'll just test that. As the Es coming down, I'm going to pick that up and move it up quite a lot. I'm just going to line this up here with the other text. Then make this E white because this will be the endpoint. So the way I've done the animation is wherever I move these two by holding onto them and holding Shift, is going to be the end position where they get to. And then wherever I click on the animation and drag this red point is how far away the animation moves before returning. So I can click on this red triangle, shift and drag the red dot down, and then it'll just move further down in the animation. I'll just quickly apply the same effect to the SI G and N. So I'll make the S move down a bit further. Just check that. I actually want the S to move up instead for a variety. So I can go to effect options and choose up and that will move up, but it'll return because we've got Auto reverse as a preference. So I'm going to click on the red arrow here and drag it up the amount it goes up. Just quickly play that see it's working. Everything looking good so far. The eye can move down. So I'm going to drag the red dot. And then move the eye up. So this will be its finishing position, so I'm just going to make this one white. Great. Just quickly apply same sort of effects to the GNN. The G, I'm going to make go up by a little bit. And the N is set to down, which is correct. I can adjust the amount it moves from the red dot. Then drag the letters up on the page, select the N and make that white. So that should be pretty much it with a couple of modifications to make it look more interesting because at the moment, most of the animation happens at the same time. If I select the second box down and put a quarter of a second delay, then half a second delay, and on the bottom one, three quarters of a second delay, you'll see it has more variety when it starts. And on the G, I think we can do half a second. And on the S, I think we can do quarter for a second. So this will stagger it all, so the speed of the animation is slightly different to give it some interest. And I'm just going to do Control A and use the upcursor just for some fine adjustment to make sure that when I play it and when it finishes, the characters are in exactly the right place at the top. Excellent. So there's some motion design with text that you can easily apply in PowerPoint. And for a bit of variety, I'll show you how you can add something such as a bounce end. So with all of these selected, which you can do by holding down Shift and clicking the bottom and the top, we can go to effect options by right clicking, and then you can type in something similar to 0.5 for bounce end. Then we'll play that you can see that it now adds a little bounce at the beginning and the end, just for variety. 5. Abstract lines using a 3D bevel and fluid animation. : This time, we will be creating these abstract lines using a three D bevel and fluid animation. Firstly, let's create the lines. And to do that, we choose curve from the shapes in PowerPoint. So I will click here to start, then move the mouse, click again. And as you drag it down, you can see it creates the curve. To finish, you can press Return. And there's our curved line. It can be anything you want. It's just an idea, so you can create some custom shapes and custom designs that look great on your slides. If you want to change the curve after you've finished it, you can always right click, choose Edit points, click on any point, and then use these bezier handles to adjust the curve as you want. Let's now format this line and get it looking three D. And to do this, we'll click on the line, right click and choose format shape. I'm going to make this 50 point wide. And give it round caps. These are off the screen on this particular design, but it's a nicer way of looking at it with the round caps in case you want to use the ends. Now I'm going to select gradient line, drag off these two that I don't want. I'm going to quickly paste in the colors that I want to use for this, but you can choose any color that you think looks good. So I'll click the first gradient stop, go to color Eyedropper and pick the color that I want to use. Then the second gradient stop and do the same thing again. And under direction, I've chosen the second option, which is linear down, but you can choose any direction you think looks good in your design. Now let's go in and add the three D effect. And to do that, we choose effects from the format shape option, go to three D format, and under where it says top bevel, I'm going to change that to 25 point and 25 point. The reason I've selected 25 points for each of these is because the line is 50 point, and if I choose 25 point for the width and 25 point for the height, that gives it a nice smooth, rounded look. The default material and lighting that PowerPoint has added has made it look a bit too shiny for my liking in this particular design, so I'm just going to click on material. And take it down from warm mat to mat. Then we'll click on lighting, and I'm going to choose the second one in, which is balance, as I feel that gives it a softer look, but again, it's down to personal preference, whatever you think looks good. And there's our first line. I'm happy with that. So now let's duplicate it to quickly make the others so I can hold down control and shift and drag this down. And then right click on it, o center back. And now let's choose the new colors for this line. We'll go to our gradients, and I'll pick the other colors. Now, control and shift and duplicate this line and send it to the back. Then just drag it into whatever position you think looks good. I'm just going to select all these and move them up a bit. And while they're all selected, I can hold down Control and Shift and drag them to make my second copy, put these wherever I want. These are all abstract, so just put them in whichever position you think looks good. And to quickly change the formatting on them, I can click on the pink one, which is this one. Best Control Shift C, and then click on the yellow one and apply it. Control Shift C to copy, Control shift V to apply it. Looking good. Now let's add the background. Right click format background, gradient fill. We can go with that, but I used a blue one, so I'll pick up the color. Pick up the second color. Nice. Now, let's add the text. For this, I just use Poppins black. At 88 point aligned it to the middle and made it white. So there's our abstract lines. Now, let's add the animation using the morph transition. So we'll click on the slide, press Control D to duplicate, then type in the new text and center it. We can then set the transition to morph and I'm going to move these slightly. And this will be the end position of the animation. You can put these wherever you want. It's whatever you think looks good. Because they're using the morph transition, it's easy to modify them by just dragging them at a later date, if you wish. So I'm going to go with something like that, and we'll just check that's working by running it from the beginning. Looking good. I had mine as a slightly slower animation. So I chose 6 seconds for the duration because I feel that gives a nice effect. So let's run that from the beginning. Nice. Now let's pick the other colors, and you'll see that the morph transition will automatically fade between the colors in a really nice way. I'm now going to choose a different color for this first one. Then a blue for the second one. Then we'll play that. Check that works. And I'm going to make the end color of this one. An darker version of this. So I'll just take the brightness down a bit in this case. Now it's looking good. I can press Control Shift C on this one to apply it to this one with Control Shift V, and the same again for the blue that I want to add onto this one and this one. Control Shift C again on the pink, Control Shift V. A quick way of applying the formats and the colors easily. Nice. And you can move these anyway you want. For example, I could duplicate this again. I could select these. Move them down on this one. And by making little adjustments to them individually, you can get a nice, smooth, fluid looking effect. So we'll just play from that second slide. Show how easy you can move these around to get a really nice smooth, fluid animation. Using these tools are a great way to get some individuality into your designs. 6. Fun, falling, rotating and bouncing shapes: We'll make these fun falling rotating and bouncing shapes using motion paths and the smoothing settings. I'm going to start with a basic rectangle, so we'll go up to here. L on rectangle, click anywhere on the page, and we're going to use the default size, which is 1 " by 1 ". To save time, I'm going to quickly paste in the colors I'm going to use. Now click on my shape. Right click format shape. We want no fill, and for the outline, I want a gradient line. I can drag away this stop by clicking on it and moving it off, and then I'm going to position this one in the middle. I'm going to move to my colors and set these three gradient stops to my chosen colors using the eye drop at all. For the direction, I want this second one in, which is linear down and set the width to two point. I'm now going to right, click on the background, choose format, and set that to black. So here's our first shape. I'm going to move this to the top of the page. And before I create the other ones, I'm going to add the animation to it. This is because we want to use a similar animation on every shape, and it's easier to add the animation, then duplicate it, and then change shape. We'll go to animations, add animation, first of all, choose a motion path. By default, this will move down slightly. If we hold down control and the mouse will to zoom out a bit, I can then click on this little red dot, hold down shift and drag it all the way to the bottom. So if we play that, you can see that it moves all the way down to the bottom and stops. So there's a couple of things I want to change in the animation settings. So if we make sure our items selected, click on the animation pane and then double click, we can get to the settings. So first of all, I want to click Auto reverse on, so that will mean that after it hits the bottom, it will animate backup. I also want to give it a smooth start of 2 seconds. Because I feel that gives it slightly better physics where it will actually slow down as it rises back up. And for timing, I want to choose repeat until end of slide and for start with previous. So now we click Okay. And we have our bouncing item. That's looking good. Now we're going to add one more animation, which is a spin. So we'll click on this. We'll make sure we don't select our animations from here. Otherwise, that will replace it. We want to go to add animation and choose spin. So now we can double click on our spin, we can change a couple of the settings. I want to have it to rotate 720 degrees, which is two spins. Give it a smooth start of 2 seconds, the same as the motion path, choose Auto reverse and timing with previous and repeat until end of slide and click Okay. So now when we play that, it will bounce down and rotate at the same time. Looking good, now we can quickly just make the other shapes by duplicating this one. So if we click on this and press Control D, I can just drag this into the position I want. Then go to shape format, edit shape, and change shape to whatever I want. In my example, I chose Cross. I can click Control D to duplicate this again. Edit Shape, change shape. This one I chose a five pointed star and actually clicked on this yellow dot and dragged it up a bit, then Control D again. And for this shape, I chose what they call plaque and controledi again. And for this shape, I chose a pentagon, and then for the final shape, I just chose the diamond. So there's all my shapes. If I play that now, they'll all fall at the same time. And I just wanted it to be slightly staggered. To do that, we'll make sure the animation panes are visible. I'm going to click on the star. So give that half a second delay. Give the square quarter of a second delay. The Pentagon three quarters. The plaque one. So I'm basically just adding quarter of a second delay to each one to give it a staggered effect. Now, let's play that. Looking good. Now, let's add the text. For this, I'm going to use fig tree 70 and in my example text. I wrote the phrase falling, rotating, bouncing shapes. I'm just going to change this to white, and then the correct font, and then the correct size. And bold. We can now apply the formatting, so we'll right click. Choose format shape, make sure on text options. And then under textOline I want to select gradient line, and under fill, no fill. For the gradient, we want the same one as the shapes, so I can drag this one off. Quickly select the colors. And the direction down. I want the width to be two point, and I'm actually going to make this black to make it slightly thicker font. Nice. That's looking nice. Now let's just quickly add the animation to the text. And in my example, I went to animations. And the first one I chose was float in and then changed the direction to down. And if we double click on this in the animation pane, I chose by letter with a 10% delay and under timing, I chose with previous and repeat until end of slide. So that gives the nice falling effect. But one of the good things about PowerPoint is it's easy to combine multiple animations on the same element. And to do this, you make sure it's selected, and you make sure you go to add animation instead of clicking on the animations in here, which would replace it. So we'll go to add animation. I'm going to choose swivel. And when we double click on this I want it to be on by letter with a 10% delay between letters and for timing, I want it to happen with previous and repeat until the end of slide again. So you'll see what it's doing on the individual animation there as it previews it. But when we play it, it will actually play both of them at the same time. Excellent. There we go. 7. Create an interactive vertically scrolling presentation that animates between every page: In this walk through, we'll create an interactive vertically scrolling presentation that animates between every page. I'm going to create a black background, so we'll right click on the background, choose format background, then go to solid fill and select Black. Firstly, we're going to create the content for each page, and that's going to be in one long page on this slide. So I'll hold down Control and zoom out slightly. Then click on Rectangle, click anywhere, make sure it's snapped to the top left, and then drag it out to the right and down to the bottom. For this, I'm going to choose no outline, and I'm just going to quickly paste in the colors that I'm going to use for this. Then I'm going to click on this blue square, go to gradient fill, drag off the middle gradient stop that I don't want, click on the one on the left, and then go to the eyedropper and select my first color. Then click on the one on the right, Eyedropper and select my second color. While the shape is selected, I'm going to quickly paste in my text, size it up by pressing Control and right square bracket. Then go to the size and properties, and under the margin size, I want the left to be ten and the right to be ten. That's my layout for page one. Now I'm going to quickly duplicate that to make the other pages. So I'll hold down Control and use the mouse wheel to zoom out, move my colors out the way, then click on this and press Control and Shift, and then drag it down. These colors, I want the one on the left to be purple and the one on the right to be the third color in my palette. Then I can type in my new text. And do the same again quickly for three and four. So hold down Control and Shift and drag down, quickly change the colors to whichever you want that looks good. And there's my final slide. And I'll just quickly update the text, and now we're all done. I find it easier to select all of these and Control G to group them. Now let's create our other pages and then we'll create the navigation. So firstly, we'll go to the slides on the left, right click and choose new slide, and then Control D and Control D. So that will create the three other slides that we're going to jump to. Go back to slide one. I'm going to zoom in to my top slide and create the navigation. For this, I used a circle. So you can click on Oval in the shapes menu and click anywhere on the page, and I made this white with no outline and 0.8 by 0.8 size. And if you hold down Control and Shift, you can copy this and control Y or equally space, another duplicate. Now we can create the Links, so I'll right click on this and choose Link. This one, slide one. Right click Link slide two, right, click Link slide three. And then finally, right, click Link, and choose Slide four. I'm just going to select all of these and move them down slightly so they're equal on the page to this. That's looking good. Now we can copy this content onto the other pages, and the first thing I'll do is make the background black. So I've selected all the slides, go to solid fill and choose black. Now I can click on the content, Control C. Go on to slide two and Control V. Now if I zoom out, all I want to do is move this up until it's in the right place for page two. Which is just there. Now I can align it to the page by going to arrange line, align center. That is now page two. Control V to paste it into slide three. And again, we move it up so that page three is the bit visible. Which is there and align it to the center. And then Control V for page four. We can quickly do this by doing a range, a line, bottom. Then we have our four pages that we can actually go between. I now want to select all of our navigation buttons, Control C on those, then go to page two, past them in, page three, paste them in, page four, paste them in. I'm just using page up and page down to switch between those. Now we have our navigation buttons in. So whenever we click on those, it will go straight to that slide. But now let's add the clever bit in, which is using morph to animate between them. And this is as simple as pressing Control A, going to transitions and choosing morph. I'm also going to set the duration to 1 second because I like the speed of that. So if we play now, whichever one you click on, it will animate between them, so you can go down incrementally or even jump from any page to any other page. Now I want to similarly sized circle. This one will have an outline, which is the color of the page that you're on. No fill. The outline will be 1.5 point. I'm also going to go to the effect section, choose glow, select white, and set that to five point. Now I can change it to the size, same size as the circle. Not 0.8. By naught 0.8. And then align it over the top of the circle, and you can adjust it with the cursor keys. Now I can press Control C. Go on to page two. Press the cursor keys to bring it down to where I want it. Give it the outline of the color of the patron. Control V again for page three. Finally, Control V for page four. Bring it all the way down. Now when we play, this will animate automatically between the slides.
