About This Class

Hello and Welcome to Acrylic Florals and Layering Techniques, I'm Michelle!

In this class I’ll teach you my favorite acrylic floral painting and layering techniques as well as some easy hand lettering.

You will be creating a hand painted gift tag, to give to someone special in mind, and uploading your creation to the student project gallery below.

For the gel pen lettering lesson you will need words to a song, prayer, poem or you can make up a message for the recipient of your tag.

This class is perfect for beginners who have never picked up a paintbrush but have always wanted to learn how to paint florals and it’s a great introduction to how to paint florals without a lot of time and expense. And if you are a more experienced painter this class is also great if you are looking to add some new techniques to your painting versatility.

 Hello! I'm Michelle Perkett @michelle_perkett

My art business started in the US Air Force where my first job was a Graphic Artist. I worked in Corporate Graphic Design for 10 years but I was an illustrator at heart so I earned my BFA in Illustration and started my art business.

I created a line of cards and art prints working mostly in Photoshop and in 2013 I began licensing my designs as rubber and digital stamps.

But soon after I began caregiving for my Mom who had developed Dementia and my art was put on hold.

What truly kept me in the art "loop" while caregiving were all the amazing art classes here on Skillshare. I was so exhaused on a daily basis, too tired to paint, so I watched hours and hours of classes here to keep me company and made ... See full profile

1. Hello and Welcome! : Hi, I'm a shell for Ket Oven Illustrator, Art journal ER, Digital stamp artist and floral painter. Welcome to my skill share class acrylic florals and layering technique with the background . A graphic design I've always worked primarily in Photoshopped Independent Inc but in 2000 and 15 after a 30 day sketchbook floral painting challenge, I was totally hooked on florals and have been painting them ever since. I love sharing my colorful, playful painting style on my instagram and Facebook pages and florals Air. Definitely my favorite to pee in this class will be showing you my favorite floral painting techniques and how I create layers with paint and gel pens and also a little bit of funding easy hand lettering. Our class project is to create a hand painted gift tag, and you'll be adding a hidden note home or song lyric of your choice. Using my simple airing technique and also adding a short hand lettered sentiment, you'll be making your gift tag with someone special in mind. A friend, mother, sister or teacher who would love receiving a handmade, personalized gift care and who doesn't love receiving something made especially for them. It will be a handmade gift from the heart. After you complete your project, take a photo and you can upload it to the Project gallery below. This class is perfect for beginning painters and also for anyone with more advanced painting skills. Who would like to learn another approach to florals and next media. In the next video, I'll give you your supply list, which is minimal because you don't need a lot to create something beautiful. I'm so glad you're here, and I can't wait to see what you create. So let's dive in and get started. I'll see you in the next lesson. 2. Supply List: Okay, so here all our supplies will be using for a gift tag project. It's not a big list. First of all, of course, we need some gift tags of using the brown craft paper gift tags by the recollections brand and got them at Michael's There 2.5 by 5.1 inches and there's 20 in a package. But you're welcome to use any gift tags you have. Or, if you don't, you can always cut 2.5 by five inch rectangle from a brown paper bag and then punch a hole in the top and you're good to go for my brushes. I'll be using to flat brushes a 12 in a six and also to round brushes of six and zero. For our lettering. We'll need a white gel pen. This is, ah, jelly roll pan by secure. I got that as Michael's as well. It's a 0.8 size for our paint. You'll need some white paint I'm gonna use, just so just because I like the consistency of it. But any white acrylic paint craft paint will be great. You'll need a light pink and a dark olive avocado shade and I'm using Martha Stewart craft paint in satin. Also, you'll need some bright pink then or hot pink s start truth color or a lime green. Also, acrylic craft paint in a bright yellow would be great. And I'm gonna list all of the products that I'm using down below. You'll need, of course, some water, A palette. And I'll show you how to use the palate next in the next video. And then some paper towels, of course. So off we go to the next video. See you then. 3. Painting your first layer: Okay, we're back, and we're ready to paint her first layer. So I have my gift tag here. We're gonna paint just a thin layer of pink paint on it. I've got my water. I have my paint palette, which is the Tupperware container. Topped. Org's great for a palate. I've got my number 12 flat brush. You don't have to have a flat brush. You can use any kind of brush you you like. I'm using Martha Stewart pink in poodle skirt. In all the names of the paints are listed below in the project descriptions. I'm just adding a little bit of paint and I'm gonna grab a little bit extra paper towel so I might need a little bit more. It's just good to have a little lecture to dab the paint ppd to. I'm adding some water because I want to get it to a consistency, or it just glides right over the gift tag. And if it gets a little too thick, just add some more water and you can kind of experiment with that. We just want to cover all of the tag and just a thin layer. I don't want to cover it so it's super stick because we're gonna add a couple more layers onto that. So just so it covers it lightly. And so you can still see some of the brown and like to see some of that brown coming through gives it a little bit more depth. So we're gonna let this dry when we're finished painting, and then we're gonna move on to doing some fun lettering with their gel pens and the verse that you've chosen to write on it, see in the next lesson. 4. Gel pen lettering: so the next step is to hand write or print. If you prefer printing the words that you chose for your hidden message, I want you to grab your white gel pen and start writing out the words in your own handwriting. And it's totally okay if you have really messy writing like me because you'll be painting another layer of paint on top of it as well as your floral layer. So I'm not too concerned about how perfect my lettering is at this point. The words I chose for mine are the lyrics to the song You've Got a Friend by James Taylor. My friend absolutely loves James Taylor, but obviously the whole song won't fit on the tags or I'm writing until I run out of room, and the same goes for your words. Just keep writing on this layer until you run out of gift tag in your tag recipient. I guarantee you will love it. I give this about five minutes when you're done to to dry and then in the next lesson will be painting another quick layer in the top. So I'll see you guys in the next lesson. 5. Painting your second layer: Okay, We're back with the really quick lesson. And what I'd like you to do next is to paint a very thin layer of pink on top of your lettering. This will give your tag background more cohesive. Look, and we'll prime your little gift tag canvas for the floor layer painting. And so obviously you're writing will be mostly covered. But you and your your gift recipient will know what the words are under needs. And I know they're just gonna love it. So give it a few minutes to dry in inter. Next lesson. I'll show you how to paint your floral layer. I'll see you in the next video. 6. Painting your floral layer: So after you load up your palate and grab your brushes, you'll be ready to paint your floor layer. All right. The first step is to take your small flat brush and white paint, and what I want you to do is lay in the basic shape of the flower on the bottom of the gift tanks. Starting about 1/4 of an inch from the bottom, you'll be painting a larger flower on the bottom in two smaller ones on the top. And just make sure you just keep wedding your brush when you need to, so the paint glides on the tag easily. And before this tries, clean up your brush a little and then you'll be ready to add your hot pink, though before the white drives, you want to grab some of your pink pink, and I'm starting at the midpoint of the flower. You want to make some kind of ah, circle, so you have a center point to pain around. It really helps to have a little midpoint toe work around, and I'm adding pink paint and white together and keeping my brush strokes in the same direction all around that midpoint, adding pink and white together until we get the color that I like a man in a little bit of yellow to make it more PG and so keep layering the colors until you get the brushstrokes that you like in the color that you like and keep cleaning your brush. During this process, I'm going to be saying that a lot so the colors don't get too muddy and you want to have a clean brush, and then it will be easier to paint on the tag. It'll glad on easier when you do that, and then when you get it the way that you want it, let it dry, really loving these colors to go there a lot. Take a minute to clean up your brush again, and then you'll be painting the two smaller flowers on the top of the tag. Okay, you're doing great. I hope you're enjoying the process so far. I want you to do exactly what you did on the bottom with larger floral. I want you to block in the shapes of the two smaller flowers with your white paint, give them three rounded petals each and then start adding your pink to it. And, of course, clean your brush and add some pink. Your flower midpoint will be on the right this time, and then you'll again work around it with your brush strokes. And you're always gonna be layering your pain and adding color to it until you get it the way you that you like it. And then when you're finished with that, we're going to be painting the left side of the flower together again. All right, you're gonna paint the left side next, just the way you did on the right and add some pink to the white that should still be wet. And keep that brush clean. And there's the midpoint. I added a little later, but that's okay. I think you know, by now you've got an idea where it goes and keep layering the colors till you can match the same colors in the same brush strokes. Is the flower on the right pretty close. And then next I'm going to show you how to add some really cute details. Now we want you to take out your large round brush with the point on it and add some yellow paint to your brush, and then we want to paint three little flowers and they're just gonna look like yellow doughnuts. Three little yellow donuts right next to each other in a row, and they're going to be the Q. Just little flowers. And then next. After you've done that, I'm going to show you how to paint some cute leaves to go with them Now with the same brush your larger round brush. I want you to put some of the darker green on it, and you'll need to add a bit more water to your green to make it easier for the paint to flow better on the tag. I want you to paint some leaves in the way that I do. It is to paint a curved line on the left and then a curved line on the right of the leaf and then fill in the middle really easy, and you want to make sure you have a point on the top of the leaf in a point on the bottom . That's why I'm using the round brush with the pointed tip that makes it a lot easier to get a point and just make sure you've watered down your pain enough so it flows onto the tag. It will almost be like the consistency of water color, because this tag really eats up the water in the paint and dries out quickly. So keep going back to get more water till you happy with all your leaves. And in the next video, I'll show you had to add some quick and easy highlights to your beautiful leaves. And now you're gonna finally be able to use that beautiful sharpshooters color. And what I want you to do is lightly paint a thin layer with it on the top of all the leaves, and you don't need to paint all the way to the edges because you want to have some of the dark green peeking through. And this layer is just to give your leaves a little more depth and another layer, and that's it. So in the next video, I'll show you how you can outline your pretty pink florals to really make them pop. Your gift tag is looking beautiful. Next, I want you to get your small brush and some of your white paint and make sure you get some water in your brush and dip it right into your white paint. And then what I want you to do is outline the top two flowers for this segment. Outline the outside of the flowers, and if the paint is a little bit thicker in some places, that's totally fine. I actually really like that. The messier, the better on this part, and mine is looking kind of messy, too. It'll give it more personality and half you outline it. I want you to add 1/2 circle over where the midpoint of the flower is, and then a couple more half circles to indicate where some of the pedals are and to give it a little bit of extra definition. And that's it. In this segment, I'll be showing you how to outline the larger flower at the bottom of the tag. The same way is on the top. Juanita outline the outside of the flower exactly how you painted it on the top two. And then after that, I'm going to randomly pick some places on the flower, Of course, at the midpoint and a few extra half circles around the flower, this one is a little bit bigger, so you have to add a little more to indicate the pedals. And then next we're going to be outlining your cute little donut flowers. You made it to the final segment of your floral layer. Great job. I'm so proud of you. In this segment, you'll be outlining all of your leaves in all of your little yellow donut flowers and go all the way around the edges, just like you did with the other two. Flowers and your outlines convey be as thick or as thin as you want and can really lay on the paint or thin it down. It's up to. You can make it as messy as you want. Just have fun with this layer. I really loved outlining flowers. I think it's one of my favorite parts of painting. It's just so fun and relaxing. And then, after you've outlined all of your leaves and flowers, I want you to just add a little bit of white paint to your little donut holes there in your cute little flowers. And then next, I'm gonna show you how to add your hand painted Sentiment looks beautiful 7. Painting your sentiment: in this lesson, I'm going to show you how to hand letter your sentiment in what I chose for mine are the words for you and for the paint color. I'm using the dark olive and I'm using my tiny round brush. Let me add in quite a bit of water to thin the paint way down because acrylic paint tends to be a bit sick, so that really helps to add a lot of water. I'm adding the letters F o. R on the first line of my sentiment. And then after you paint each letter, I want you to clean your brush off so the paint doesn't thicken up when your brush and acrylic paint dries very quickly, so if you're cleaning your brush, it will be much easier to work with. So I'm picking up fresh pain every time we started a new letter, and if it's a little lighter than the previous letter, you can always go over it again with another layer of color. My are the little lighter, so I'm gonna go over it again, and it really does help to practice on a piece of paper first before you paint on your tag And so next I'm going to show you how to add why. Oh, you and there were manning the y ou Exactly how I added the f o r the why is under the f Theo is gonna go right under the other. Oh, and the you will be under the are in again Lots of water cleaning your brush in between each letter so the paint doesn't get clubbed up on your paintbrush. Lots of water and lots of cleaning. And the last letter and that's it. Your lesson is finished. You've done the class. You finished. Congratulations. 8. Thank you!: Congratulations. You made it. Thank you so much for watching my class. And don't forget to upload your project to the Project gallery so we can all see your beautiful creation. I can't wait to see your gift tag. I've also added a bonus video after this one. I'll show you how to embellish your gift tag with gemstones, ribbon and glitter to make them even more beautiful. Thank you again for being here. I really enjoyed our time together. I'll see you next time. 9. Bonus Video - Embellishments : the first embellishment and wanted to share with you is to add ribbon. I got this one at the dollar tree. Got some pink glitter satin, some green string and some peach fine ribbons. Really pretty in this yellow I had in my stash. So I'm gonna add some of that too. What I did was cut about a little over a foot of each and then put them all together and lined up the edges. And then I am folding the set of ribbons and half so it makes a loop on the top. And because all this ribbon has to fit through that tiny little gift tag whole, um, you'll need to squeeze it and then twisted to kind of make a point and then put it through the hole. And I have quite a bit of ribbon, and in this pink little ribbon is really thick, so it's a lot harder to pull through in work with, So just pull the loop through at least 3 to 4 inches, so you get all the loose ribbon through it. And so once you have your loop ready, you want to take all the excess ribbon from the back side of the tag and pull it through the loop. And I have a lot of ribbon to get through that loop. And because this pink litter ribbon is pretty thick, it's a little more difficulty to work with. But it's pink and it's glittered, and I just couldn't pass it up for a dollar at the dollar store. But it definitely will be a lot easier to use thinner satin or chiffon type ribbon or string. But we're finally going to get it through, and next we'll cut it with the scissors. So now, while the ribbon is pulled through the loop and I'm going to cut the excess ribbon off about three inches or so from the top of the town, you could make it a little longer if you like. And look how beautiful it looks, all that hard work paid off. Now I'm going to show you how to embellish your tag with Stickles Glitter glue. Amusing the colored called diamond. It's listed in the project description under the bonus video section and of squeezing the bottle really lightly and adding a very thin layer on the white highlights of the flowers. Now I'm gonna add a tiny then layer to the leaves real quick and inside the little donut holes, and the same goes with the flower on the bottom, and that's it. Just give it at least an hour, probably more like to to dry. But when it does dry, it's so beautiful. Look how gorgeous that is. Now I'm gonna add a gemstone to my gift tag these I've had in my home stash for years, so unfortunately, I don't have the packaging, but Michaels is a great place to get those. I chose a lime green gem. I'm adding one to the larger flower, but you can add more to the flowers on top and even inside your little donut flowers to be cute and then just glue it down with some Elmer's glue. And that's it. So I hope you enjoyed your bonus video
