Teacher

Hello, I'm Saniya. I am a self taught Artist born in India currently residing in California. Academically I have done my Master's in Computer Science, worked in corporate for more than 7 years.

Since early childhood I loved to draw and paint. When i started my higher studies i completely gave up on Art as I was more occupied with studies, but somewhere deep inside I always had the urge to paint.

While working for a corporate firm during COVID times i realized that, life is very precious. And i don't want to spend my entire life working for someone else. I just wanted to do something that makes me happy. There was just one thing apart from my family that makes me happy "Painting", that's when i decided to take my hobby to next level.

Quitting my corporate job and wor... See full profile

1. Introduction to class: Hello everyone, Welcome to today's class. My name is Sonya and I am an artist based in the Bay Area, California. In today's class, we learn to paint this beautiful abstract textured art inspired by the dark, deep portion. I'll be telling you how to use your text, which base to use, and all the materials required. In case you I've missed anything, please feel free to reach me out. Drop a command. Reach me out on Instagram. Thank you. 2. Requirement for the class: These are the things we need for today's class. It's eight x eight stretched canvas. It's a requirement. You have a stretched canvas, textured art, that's the palette knife we need. You don't need a specific shape of knife as we just need to draw random shapes. This is a course pumice basically, it's just like a sand sand texture. This is a fine pumic gel, it's more fine than the course one. We need hard molding paste. Basically we need specific hard molding based molding. Paste won't work here for the texture which we are looking for. 3. Let's get started with the first step: Let's start with our next step, which is to build a layer of texture on a stretched canvas. As I've already told that for this particular painting texture art, you need a stretched canvas, a very good stretched canvas. The quality of canvas should be good because we will be using a thick texture on top of it, but we don't want the canvas to go bad. Like with the heavy textures, I'm just randomly going on the fly mixing all these three pastes together, the fine, these pumic gel and the hard molding paste. We need hard molding paste to bind these two pastes together. Because as you see the course pumic gel, it won't stick to the canvas by itself nicely. I'm using the hard molding paste to bind it together. You don't need a specific shape of palette knife to make this painting, as we are just making some random shapes of ocean wave over here. That's why, that's the reason I have not specified like any specific number of palette knife to be used here. The idea behind creating this painting, something that is inspired from the ocean wave. Like a huge ocean wave that is going. I'm trying to make something that resembles a wave in a textured pattern. Now I don't know if it's visible or not, but I am making very thick layers of texture. I'm building very thick layers of texture because when this dries, it's not going to look the same and it is going to shrink a little because it has a lot of water content in it. Once that water dries from the texture, it's going to look a little different. If you are doing this for the first time, I would recommend just after a few layers, wait till it dries to see how it will look. Now the idea behind this was like I want the coarse, pumad gel on top of the canvas. As we go to the bottom, it gets more finer and finer so that I can show the sprinkles of water at the top. 4. Step 2 - Adding some colors: That's how our painting look after it has dried for an entire day. To make sure you're not he drying it or hand drying it, let it dry naturally to avoid any cracks or any issues with a texture paste. I am using here deep turquoise color and titanium white heavy body colors, using the softest brush available. Because when you are painting over the texture, we need to make sure that the colors are penetrating through the texture. Specifically in our painting, because we have used the coarse pumic and the fine pumic chill, it has a rough texture. If you're finding it difficult to blend the colors with the texture, try adding a little water. By little, I mean just dip your brush very little in water and then use it over the texture. It will be easy to blend in this way. Here we are trying to paint the first layer, which I just have a basic idea. I'll go from lighter to darker, starting from the top of the canvas, as we are just using two colors over here, white and turquoise, deep. It's easy to color the first layer. After we are done doing the first layer, we'll probably doing the second layer, which we'll just highlight the textures over here with lighter color which will give a depth to our texture. While you're painting this, make sure that your painting is absolutely dried and it's not wet before you paint on it, otherwise it will ruin your painting. We have completed the first layer over here. Just making sure there are no pieces left where we can see through the canvas or we can see the raw texture over here. Make sure you have covered every nook and corner. If you're finding it difficult to reach towards the end of the canvas through the texture, add a little bit of water to it so it will become easy for the color to penetrate through the texture. Now I'm blending colors at the top of a canvas because I think that there are clearly two colors. I can see it and the blending has not been done properly. I'm trying to blend these two colors to make it seem a little more easy. Now, the reason I've used another brush over here is just because the previous brush was dip into dark turquoise color and didn't want it to use that again, this is probably the second layer where I'm just dipping my brush lightly into white color and with very light feather handed, I'm just touching the top texture in which you can see through the beneath, darker color of the texture. You can also see the lighter color on top of it, the second layer which is giving a depth to our canvas. Adding more white color because I thought like it's not white enough as I wanted over on the top of the canvas. If you're comfortable, you can also use your fingertips to just blend the colors. It's more easy to blend it in this way or just highlight the texture. You're free to use whatever color or shimmer, or glitter, or gold leaf you want to highlight the texture with. Please let me know if you have any questions, queries, or concern. Because I'm very new to teaching and I would love to hear your feedback. Anything that would help me the next class, any recommendations for the next class are more than welcome. As you can see, the color has blended beautifully and it's giving a nice ocean depth feeling after we look at the texture in a very basic and simple way. 5. Finale: Thank you so much everyone for watching my today's class. It means a lot to me. As I'm new to teaching, I would really appreciate any feedback or review on my class which will help me in improving my next class. I would appreciate any recommendations if you have for the next class. These are the few paintings I have created using the same technique. Thank you so much.
