About This Class

I love keeping a nature journal, but painting with watercolours in nature can be challenging, especially if you're out hiking or traveling and you're short on time. I wanted to share the many quick techniques that I've learnt to painting nature scenes in a journal but because there are so many elements to nature I decided to break them up into smaller classes.

In this class I show you how to quickly capture ripples and waves on the sea. At the end of class we paint a simple picture using the techniques learnt in class. This will give you the confidence to select a technique and paint the ocean when next you're there.

Keep an eye out for other classes in the Watercolour Nature Journaling series where we learn how to paint other elements of nature.

My name is Angie, and I'm a writer and artist.

My writing journey started many years ago when I took journalism and advanced journalism courses and started writing freelance articles and short stories for magazines, which were published in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. I also designed and hosted a writers workshop, which took place over the course of a month, with weekly in-person meetings and lots of writing from the participants in between meetings.

My fine art journey started right here on Skillshare, in 2017. I took some fun art classes in many different media because I had never done fine art before and had no experience, but I knew I wanted to learn. Gradually... See full profile

1. Welcome!: keeping a night in jail can be a very satisfying creative outfit, but painting outside could be very difficult. Different experience from painting indoors. Sometimes the weather is not ideal, and the night changes so fast that you can hardly keep up. You can anything like me, and you have your Children and your family with you when you're ranting about, you're not really alone when you're painting, either, and your full attention can be on your painting. So learning quick and easy ways to capture the nature that I see in front of me is essential to the success off keeping a nature journal If you want to paint your scene, would Ito, in other type of photographs and painted a tradition indoors where you could work on it to give it the attention it deserves? However, in this series, I want to show you some easy techniques to start keeping a watercolor NATO general, so that even if you're a complete beginner and you've never done this, people, you'll have the tools so that you can capture the nature that you see in front of you with ease in general next time you're out and about in this class. We're only going to focus on the simple techniques that you can use to create ripples and waves in the sea. So joining me now, if you want to do in some surprisingly easy ways to capture the movement of the sea in a journey 2. Project: your project for this class is a twofold project. The first part of it is going to be to start your own technique, library or technique toolbox if you want to. So when I first started painting water colors up outdoors, I was really eager to get going. And when I found myself facing a senior nature, I had a lot of techniques and make that's going through my head that I learned from various teachers and books of places, and I don't know which one to use. And sometimes I picked one. And then I realized it would have been better to use another technique. But because time is sure that was the one that made him a general. So I started keeping a technique ivory and I just used what to cut paper. And I put a little cover, and I found rather just with wall, where you can use a little clips, anything you have had. And I carried this in my back with me so that we know spiced with nature, and I have to pay the sea or the tree you whatever it waas. I could quickly flip through here at my techniques and see which would be suitable. And that helped me to say time and to pick a better technique than I am right if if I if I didn't have this with me. So the first part of your project is to start your own little book Clapper's, especially if you're a beginner and Teoh just way when you learn new techniques, just let them into the different. However you organize yours and carry it with you when you go out to practice your painting . The second part of our project is going to be a painting at the end of clothes that I'll do with you. And I made it really simple so that we can fit in as many of our water techniques as possible. In one painting, you see, you can start practicing them, and it's also simple enough for you to keep practicing on your own. If you do, two or three of them find them and you use the different techniques and see which ones you like best. Then the next time you're out by the sea, it will be a lot easier for you to actually pay to see that you see in front of you so we will use a fictitious see, because everybody's ocean is different. But it will give you the confidence to bank the one that you see when you're actually sitting by the beach. I have that you upgrade your projects and that you show us your painting or you your technique. General, if you're starting one, that would be lovely to see the house. 3. Materials: we're this close. All you need is some good quality would to color paper. I take mine into small pieces there, about a five size that's normally what I use when I'm out. But you can also get a watercolor sketch book. Or you can just buy big sheets and tear them to whichever size you like. If you're going to use watercolor paper, just make sure you have some of those bulldog clips to clip them onto something because it's often windy outside and you don't want them flying around, then winning up in nature sketching. I also sometimes used the's brush pins that hold the water inside them, and I'll show you how to use them in the course. I also carry a little spritzer with me. It's actually a fine, fine mist spritzer that we're using watercolor, but it's very handy when you're after. You just need to add a bit of water when you're painting outdoors. It's useful to remember that things dry a lot faster, especially on windy days. When you're trying to do a washing, you want to live something out. You might have to re waited. So one of these is good or any spray bottle. I also have these words off kitchen towel that I fold up in putting my skitch back. So always, but quite a lot of these with me. So for this class, you will also need some artistic. You will need some masking fluid on a really old like an old brush that you're not using anymore. I use this one. It will ruin your brushes said, and use it with a new brush. Just getting old brush or a cheapie brush. And that's the mosque. Good. You'll need some paint. The only colors we've been using this course is ultra Marine blue. COBOL, please. So, ultra marine blue, we're gonna use a cobalt blue. We're going to use any sort of dark green that you have. I used ready in green. Any dark green would be fine. That's not not like not Seth Green or anything like that. But a darker green would be fine. On these are the only three colors will be using for this class. If you want to add a little bit of burnt sienna or any off the brown that you might have a number to your beach scene, that's fine, but essentially only need cobalt blue and ultra marine, blue and dark green. And then you're going to need if you're not using the brush means you're going to need a selection of precious I normally carry with me in my bed. I'm not too fond of the brush been. So I carry with me a big, any big brush. This is a size 10. I have a flat brush. She will need a flat brush. And I have a smaller one just for some detail, usually for treason, that sort of thing. Um, this is a size two. Then, for this course, you will also need a pencil. Just a night one and you will need a white pastor. This is called the Nerd White Oil Pastel. So you need a well past a white one for this. Other than that, you need the basic some way to mix on your friends. So if you're using coupons, you'll need some way to mix them. And you can either use a jar of water or this is what I take with me. When I go out. I have a water bottle. Um, Andi, I use this to two week my brush sometimes I even depending on where you are, I hold it between my feet, like on the beach. Sometimes it between d and you can't hold everything down. And I just did my brushes straight in here because I do prefer venting with brushes with him out, and I dip them straight in there. So this is like our water job. Otherwise, if you know where the if this water where you're going, then use that water and that's it, that's all you need to send its get started. 4. Techniques 1 and 2: Okay, so the first I'm gonna do is just put a bit of your paint. If you're using the two paints, I will put a little bit of my ultra Marine, do they? And then you do want to put out a bit of your green as well. This is a already in green, but like I said, any dog green will do, and we are going to mix them and use them separately, so just take a bit of space between them. So what I did in my when I started collecting my techniques is whether it took a piece of paper like this and I folded in half office and up with two techniques. Page. So you just have that dividing line now the first thing we're going to do is we're going to do a wash, and we're going to let it dry. So you just with your page and then you want to make a puddle with your ultra marine blue and because it's a wash, you wanted to be nice and cuddly, and we're going to pretend that the sea is blue that we're painting today because these are just techniques can be any color and sometimes the seas blue. And sometimes it's green. Where I love the sea can be any. Usually it's more green and brown than it is blue. So there we are. So your first wash, we have to leave this one dry before we can do them before we can do the reports on them. So while we wait for the first wash to dry, we can carry on Earth, are sick and technique. We were going to start lifting out, some kind of. So again, just make a wash on your page and you do want it to be a family. Wished Rush. What? And then, just for some variety, we will pretend that the sea had some blue in the background on. We can start mixing some of our blue in our green when you could stick to one color. There's no real reason to mix them. That's just for writing for interest. So what, You're going to take a piece of your kitchen toe? You're going to fold it, fold it again. Throw it again, can really make a very small a little que of it like that once it's that small as you can get it you start twisting it like this, you want to quit nice intact. Now when we look, think when you look with C and there's a bit of those white surf ripples on the sea. The soup brother further back, they would be smaller and coming close to the shore, there would be bigger. So when you lift out the paint with your kitchen, tell at the back you really want to touch it. And I like to sort of do a little like a seesaw motion with it. And if your weight if your parent is still very weight, some of the color will creep back in. And that's fine at the back because sometimes the surface the back you can really see very clearly anyway. So you do that you don't need to keep them in straight lines, obviously, and as you come closer, you let go attention off your twisted. Not a little with and make a bigger You might even start groaning it a bit. Maybe your surface going off to one side. So you want to do that, we all and then you can go that can you conceal went to get a with more here if you're small ones, the and if too much planters creep back in the back, you can just go over it again. You should let the backward country and just try to keep them different sizes because so it is not always the same size. So that's the one way that you can lift it out. Then at least if you're out in the field, you can quickly see that on. You'll see that you had some white suit from the horizon coming all the way forward. So now that your first wash has dried, we can add the ripples in there. So you gonna use your flat brush for this one and we're going to use. So if you may just see a blue a color. If you just use ultra Marine, then you just use a slightly darker version of ultra Marine. If you chose a greener see, then choose a slightly darker vision off. Whatever. See, you made it so with your flat brush again, remembering that ripples in the back are very faint and small, and you're going to use the tip of your brush and just barely touch it just in the back. Then, if it's too light for your liking. That's a little bit like maybe we'll make the next row with Docker. But at least in the back of the sea, it's usually quite flat. You don't really see much detail when things are further away and we know are closer. You start to see more details. So you could. I started getting a few more details here, more ripples, and you don't want to have straight lines. Just do a little jiggly motion with him. And as they come closer, you do want your reports to be. It's not the biggest. When I started pressing down on my fresh until they right in front, you could put a few smaller ones in between if you wanted to. So you've got your 1st 2 ways of creating waves in the sea. So your dog reports and you've started lifting at some light soup in the water. If you find your first washes to light, then before you looked at anything, just make you make sure you wash is dark enough, and then you let it dry and you take out your with your twisted kitchen telling you, Take out some paint and remember also that painted with your war depend will dry a bit lighter than what it looks like when you first apply it so rather go darker than to night. 5. Techniques 3 and 4 and 5: okay for the third technique, where once again, just going to start with the wash. In fact, in this one, I will show you how to use. If you don't know how to use the's travel brushes, water brushes, then I'll show you now. So it's filled up with water inside you and is a little it should stay here Bush that we're gonna push. And when you squeeze, a little bit of a little droplet of water comes out. So if you couldn't see the little drop when it comes up between the haze day No, you've got water so you could squeeze it, make a little puddle in your Now let's whatever you're using and then you create your wash like it so usually when you're painting out and about, you might not have enough water for awash in Washington. That so you just make your pedal really nice and cuddly. And then you start your wash at the top and you want to keep it. Wait a way through, and if you see it starting to go dry, you can squeeze your brush a bit. A bit more water will come out and your wash will go on, Smith again tried to make a little bit darker than it would be then. You think it should be an older stick with ultra Marine blue for this one, and when you're fainting out by the sea, it's often windy by the shore, and so you will have to do this really quickly. Then you can leave it to dry just a slight bit. But if you're often about, you probably won't have to wait because the wind will be drying it already. But in the meantime, I'll just show you how to clean it. So if you wanted to change, say to Green, then you squeeze a little bit of water onto your kitchen, toe your wife squeeze wife, and you keep squeezing and wiping until your kitchen tell his family cleaner doesn't have to be perfect. And then you can go in and you can pick up a different kind of. And you could maybe added in if you want to, something like that. And then again, if you have to change color, you squeeze it until it comes up, and then we're going to start lifting out some ripples, so you want your brush to be damp but not very wit. And you could do this with your flat brush, which would probably work better off Dennis with it, with my round brushes and my flat brush. And that brush does work better, but sometimes you have to work with what you've got, so you could also lifted out with this pressure. If you if you wash, is still a bit too, it is not a problem. You just have to do it more often, but the color will start creeping back in when you just lift it out. So I don't want straight lines and you clean your brush between. So this is not a technique that I use when I'm painting out very often. If I come back and I have to fix my panting while work from a photo, maybe then I would use this particular lifting our technique. I find that if it's too, it's either too windy and the paint dries too quickly and then just make more damn. And these brushes are not. I don't like using them too much. You might find that you like him, in which case that's fine. But as you do a few paintings out you'll see what you like and what you don't like. So you keep trying your your brush on. Keep taking the paint often. If your brush kids to try. Just moisten it a little bit so that you can go back in a little more color out. And if you find the color creeping back into much like over here, you can just go over it again. And I sort of do a little like a jiggly movement because you don't want straight straight lines. So if he's never straight so this particular ocean has got some very big. So if you had small ripples, thes pressures come in different sizes. You could use a smaller one or, like I said, you could use your flat brush. But either way you're getting the effect off surf in your water, and I do find that when lt nature, you have to just use what you have. And for me, my night in general is a place where I fracture quick snapshot of what I've seen on if I want to perfect that vision, or that that image did not take a photo, not come home and I've and I use proper techniques to perfect it. But in my journal, it's all about quick ways to just capture what's happening in nature in front of me. And this is one of those very quickly is that you can use all right. Like I said, they lost two techniques. I'm going to put them on going to put them on one because they both involved applying the material first in the wash off to it, so that if you have lots of white suit that you want to capture, you could also use artistic. So what, you would do you care a little piece off like this not to take it and you do not, and you start tearing it into tiny little slivers So you don't really want to straight h pieces, but use it here So the smaller pieces will again going near the back near the horizon. And then you can put slightly bigger ones in the front. And how many you put depends on how much certainly see a lot of service put a lot more of these. Okay, so once you've done that, you again apply. Wash over the top, and I will go for ultra marine mixed with my green this time just to Quincy, Wash. So obviously tearing part into little strips like this is an imprecise what? So you're not going to get the most perfect suit like it, but you're going to get a very stock. So and thats so we just make your washing the doctor so that your white shows a profit name like that. Interesting Canete Blue Sea here, where I live in Oakland, is often streaks of blue and green, quite distinct streaks. In fact, we just white 30 dry a little bit before were pulled off the artist. In the meantime, I'm gonna show you the technique with the chalk the whale pistol. So that will pastoral because it's well, it will. It won't leave such stark white breaks in your page like the artist a people, it's going to have more of a shimmery effect. So that's because the sea where I live is often very calm on, and we don't really have huge serve waves and things like that, except on very windy days. But otherwise it's really common. We just get this glittery fit on the water, and this is what this is good for for capturing really quickly. So if you want to to have a glittery picked on the water, you would just fly your The more you go over it, the more resistance they will be. So the because more stark it will be. And the less you put, the less it will be. So I'll show you on this piece of, and you can play around with this yourself. You can put on this page. It's pretend to make some soup, and I'll go over quite thickly. Southern sticks out. You obviously. So, depending on what you want to capture, you have to get you likely with little you could go over dock again. That's not a precise science. You can't really see what you've done, so you just want to make sure they're irregular, as so it would be okay. And then again, you put your wash over them, so just do this one first and then you'll see your wash. I'm sure this is a technique. Allnut from school. The wife passed, though that's come off on your brush a little, but you will see little bits of what they're still, and long as you wash your brush nicely off to its It all comes out again. It's not. I don't know anyone who actually uses they really good watercolor brushes for the nature Generals, because they're outing about tonight, often come back with sand in my travel bag and sand on my papers and my brushes. So these are not very expensive brushes anyway, But it does come out and you can just wash it in the water, make sure it's clean. So this is what you're finished Effect would look like, if that's all you had after a nature general page where this was all I had in my bag. I didn't have kitchen towel anything with me that day, and I just used these to make the waves, and it was fine. I really like it because it has these little dots off paint over the pesto. So it's not a stalk white block that you've blocked out. So that would indicate some you know what white soup. And in this one, we just did more but glittery it. So if we do another wash over here should look a little bit more like just some light glittering on the water, not so much like suit. So it's our fault. You notice we If you live by this, you got holiday. Really? Try take notice. What color is the sea? Actually, Because I know our season really blew its very often green brown actually Just graze sometimes even so. But on sunny days if you drive over the organ bridge, um and you see the seat, it just looks glittery like this. So they have made everything one cut an hour instead of different colors. But that's a good seek under four or condemn Ryken. I flew in there, and so that would give you the effect off. Just sort of sunlight glittering on the CIA's supposed to actual, you know, shoof in the water. So these other things you could do with your whale pistol, depending on what you're trying to achieve. So why now? This would have tried. You have to wait this to drive all the way. And honestly, like I said, rt nature things dry, not foster. So would probably be dry. Anyway, we need to they want to stay off. You have to be careful because it can to your page like that. And there, you see, it's not dry enough. So some paintings seeping back in. But that's fine, because I found the autistic technique trades. Got a stock surf, so I usually don't mind if some color leads back in just to make it a little bit, please. Off last time. So again, apply. Masking tape is not a precise science, but you do get the general impression off waves. So here they are. So these are various techniques you can use to create texture in your water if you're out by the sea and they're quick and easy, Um, and I encourage you to go out and try them, even if you in the beginning, just use photos off your recent holiday at the sea and just pretend you're the how would you maybe paint that water? So the next time you already are by the sea, you would have had a bit of practicing, really trying to capture it on paper 6. Techniques 6: Okay. So in this last technique, I'm going to show you how to use masking fluid. Now, mosque in food is not something that I use when I'm out and about very often. Because, like I said, I have limited time. And so I used the quicker techniques for my nature, General. But if you wanted to take a photo of what you see and come and do it at home, masking fluid is a great thing to use for surfing that sort of thing. So you would need to a very old brush. Okay. And again, these techniques taken out of context in just a little piece of paper that might not look exactly like, See, But just now, we'll put it together in a scene and you'll see how they work. So but masking tape, masking fluid. I used that. I've got the day There are anyone here, and you do want to use a brush that you don't feel precious about. So let's just pretend we've got some white suit may be rolling waves coming onto the onto the beach, and so we will make maybe one two waves if you like. Like I said, you're brushing and remembering that that rolling waves and surf is never a straight line, which is pretend we have a rise early. And so then you have your soup coming on here, and I like to use these little circular motions because you want your served to be thicker in some areas during others and perhaps even not even straight. But it depends on what you see on where you're sitting. I just don't want it all to be one uniform, straight line. These are one way rolling way, and then, oh, make a smaller one. So again, these could be different sizes. So make a smaller one in the front because it's now coming onto the beach. It's small and spend a bit of time looking at your waves and really noticing how uneven they are that they I would have some pieces that are already rolling into fix somethin. So, cap, that's and then immediately wash your brush. Once you forced your brush. We have to wait for the mosque and fluid to drive if we can continue. So now that you're masking tape on years, dr once again we just do a simple wash. What kind of water is okay. Once you've done your wash, let it dry, and then we'll removed the masking fluid. Okay, so once it's dry, you can remove your masking fluid. Just gently rub in it. And so there you would see you have a very stark white stuff. Now, the way that you make that look like a wave and not just like a white worm calling across your page is you have to add the shadows to the waves. So you makes a bit of ultra Marine and your green off choice, and you mix it again quite dark. And you can do this before you remove the mosque in brutal off. So it's up to you. Okay? And again, I hold my brush quite fullback, because I want this the shadow that I'm going toe to be very sort of un control. They don't want to make a stop line, so make sure your paintings nose and watery but darker, and you go under the wave. When you start creating a bit of a shadows, you see a it's not exact. If it goes in the white, that's fine. I make some areas bigger than others like that, and that's what will give it the impression of a wave. It's a lot of depth underneath it. And then at the bottom here you add some shadow under your bottom wave as well. Just make it a little bit smaller because this is the wave. It's crisis, too. Sure, okay, And then you leave that to dry just a little bit. It should drive fairly quickly. And the last thing that you add to your waves is a little bit of a shadow on top of the waste, because they're never just pure white like that. So you've got the dog at the bottom, and then we take a cargo blue mix and we make it very, very light. So it's a very watery that the ratio of water to paint is probably 80% water to using paint . It's very light, okay? And you just want to again, very imprecisely, add a little little bit of that. Might even be to dog. Still a little bit of a shadow on top of your wave just again, very imprecisely. Just like that. That's it. And that is the basics off, making waves in the sea now taken out of context like this in your technique library. It probably doesn't look a whole lot like waves, but when you put in a picture just now, you'll see what put a horizon line, and it'll look a lot better. But the essentials are the Remember to put the doctor mixture under the wave under the suit to give it the dog shadow as a crashes onto this into the water and on the white, but on top makes a very light light mix off kobo and just added very irregularly on top, because waves on surface never just pure white. So that's your basic technique, ratty. 7. Painting 1 - With Masking Fluid: So now that we've learned all these techniques for creating texture in our water, let's see how we can combine them in a picture. So you want to use a pencil and just draw an imaginary horizon line after one mind feeling close the top of the page because I don't want to spend too much time doing the sky. That will be a different class. We can learn how to do different skies, stormy skies, clear skies, white plants, that sort of thing. So for now, we just have a simple, small white area for our sky, which will wash on imaginary horizon line. And then if you're unsure about where you want yourself to be, and you you don't want to apply anything to your page before you know, you could just use your pencil and likely mark out where you might have. So you have a bigger piece of paper. You can put 34 road rolling waves. Otherwise, I've just got to hear my yeah, and then I'll do when I try to keep them the same for comparisons up with one sort of surf . Yeah, the other one about you. So the one I'm going to do with masking through it. And the other one I will do with perhaps all these chalk past all because there are some things you have to know about it. So, um, but you could you could you could take out lift out the color for these rolling waves, the white. But you could lift it out using our rolled up kitchens out. And then you just do two big roles and little ones between. You could use the mark, the auto state, and you could string it along 12 That would not be my ideal choice. But if that's what you had, that's what you could do. Okay, so let's first start to the masking fluid because that has to drive. So using again your old brush, we're just going to mosque out this piece of rolling wave here. So again it's coming. Gonna be a little bit of even have something pieces, some thick pieces just like that, perhaps, and then the one in the front would be a little bit two rectangular for my liking. The one in the front would be just a little bit No, no. And I would concentrate more on making the bottom, but of yourself irregular and keeping the top fairly straight dish. Straightest things in nature can be because they never really all quite straight. So make the bottom bit a little bit more sort of circular. All right. And then we're leaving that to drive. Okay, so now that you're masking fluid is dried, we can already gone ahead and made a sky on this one. Andi, you can create a wash for your scene. Now, if you want to use a different technique for lifting out some of the little white triples in the back, you can You can use your wife, Estelle, to create a just a bit of clipped on the water that's also fine in between. And then let's start adding And I'm gonna make this a fairly green sea because when I look out my window here, C c. And it is green today, that's very life green, even greening gray sort of color. So, like bringing see for us. Make yours whatever color you wanted to be. Here, whatever you see. So when I do my washes for the C, I'm never too careful about night near perfect wash because the sea never is like that. When I look at it, I see bits of dark and light. Okay, so not that you're panting is dry. We're going to add the finishing touches to the way. So this time I'm going to mix my midnight my ultra marine blue with my to make a little bit darker like we did when we get the technique and I'm going to add the shadow this time before it's like masking tape wolf. It really doesn't actually matter which way around do it. It's You're pretty again holding it far away. Very likely. No carpets. So when you're r t nature doing this to be useful to see the direction of sun, I hope you see, we don't have any. Yeah, but look at where the sun comes from. And if you can add a bit of, um, sparkled on your water, you see this sparkle the direction of sunshine added in and play around with your techniques. And you'd be amazed how these simple techniques can really create a lovely page journal here. I'm actually going to be there. All right. Once that is dry, we can remove our Moscow could. So while well while I wait for that to dry, I thought, Sure, you quickly. I used oxes in purple and my clouds. The in this picture, we used a little bit of cobalt blue and either one would be fine, but purple. If you look at the clouds, the little bit off, um, color that they're having them is very often more towards the purple side of things in the blue side of things. So again, I'm gonna mix it very, very watery. Barely any Connor and I just go over it. It's gonna be quite weight when you do it, because you're gonna lift it up. You don't want lines, but when I'm out, I do it very quickly like this. Take my kitchen tell I randomly start slouching and they have some clouds. Have a slight purple tinge to the morgue rage tinged thing. If it's not dark enough for your liking, you can just do it again and add a little bit more kind of a dunker. That's already two dog. So I left that out very quickly. If you make a mistake like that, you just lift it up very quickly. You get little bits like that. Leave those that are quite nice. And you just added again, I took and lift up. You could if you wanted to leave more so they would have a little bit of the grazier publish looking. That's just a very quick way of doing that while you're out and about. Okay, we can also just define the horizon line a little bit more in here and now. In this picture, I didn't use any technique to lift out somewhat so in the open spaces. And that's because I wanted to show you just one tool that wasn't on the materials. This because it's not an essential, but it's a really nice girl thing to have around. So, um, it's just take off the masking fluid first finish also show. Okay, I guess that I'm asking Food has been removed and thats all clear. Nothing gets left to do is to at the very light shadow on top of your suit. So for that, I'm going to mix like we did in our technique. Some COBOL very, very likely. Andi, we just added again, I'm going to hold my brush fairly high up, and we're just going to add it very rough likely on here just because Sufis never really pure white. So you just get a little quality, okay? And there we have some lovely waves rolling into the short. I was going to show you a tool that I really, really like using. So because I didn't lift at anyone any surf in between my big waves here. What I sometimes do is because when you're playing by the beach, it could be really windy and things dry very quickly. So the other thing that you can use is you can get one of these. It's called a father Castell, but artists pain, and it's a white one. Obviously it is waterproof, so you can use this on top of your picture off to its now. If you use the spin very slowly, you'll get a thicker white line, and if you go fast, you won't get a decline. But if you go, if you want to put some ripples in off to it, you can just do it like this with this pin and go quite slowly. And I don't know if you can see the white line yet over the doing. Happy so that dries a little bit lighter than when you put it on, but it is quite a good pin, and if you're if you're water underneath, if your pain is a little bit darker, it will show up a bit lighter. But you might not be able to see it on camera. Much relief you can. But once it dries, even though it drives lighter, you can see little bits of white. So it's almost like the suggestion of something on the water as opposed to stark white ripples. And that's really only one to want to see just something on the water because it's never just then what? And then, like I said, go a little bit slower so that it comes out a little bit of white. Think of what you know. And you could you use white wash pain for this as well, if you like. If you don't have the spin, you could just use a white washed painters were and adding your reports often it. So you just ask them as many as your life and then you're done 8. Painting 2 - With Pastel: on this page, I'm going to show you the same picture and you can do them along with me. I'm gonna show you the same picture with the pistol. So instead of putting masking fluid, I'm going to put pesto because you might not have mosque in food with you. Probably made my pencil lines like toe. That's OK for now. Maybe if you're going to draw in with your pencil, keep the lines fairly light. Okay, So and if you can't see your past goaltender to the side, you can get a rough idea of what you're going to look like then this one will be a little bit smaller. So when you have the ocean and you have these the surf, you also usually have little bits of white in between. So you could use your pastoral and just lift out little bits of white between not lived. Just mark them in on the same with your masking fluid. You could also put little little bits of masking fluid just in between, so that when you are when you do your wash, she could lift it out off to it. I'm not going to put it in with my job, Pesto. When you use the Joe Purcell, you really want to use it for essentials only, and I'll show you know why. So we're gonna do a wash. We'll start with the sky. Andi, I will just I'll show you quickly. How do easy clouds that are not pure white. We often ask sort of grayish Claudia because this is such a small section. I'm not going to wait it first. I'm just going to put my very white wash painting. I do want you to rise and learning to be fearless straight because they usually off. Then you take your kitchen towel, scrunch it up in a ball, and we just left out some clouds. And if you have one little wispy car with one, if you have many minis, we often have Kautz and they're not usually feel wanted a great. So I'm gonna leave it to dry and then not show you just how grave. In the meantime, once this is dry because we're gonna paint against our horizon mind we don't want them to bleed into each other. So what? Your sky to drive before you carry under the sea. So when you have a rise in line is when your skies nice and dry and computer to the back of your hand. It's not cold anymore than it's nice and dry. Then we can start painting on C on, and we're going to make this a nice Do you see again. Just choose whichever you like. I will put a bit of green in just now. So the wash first store first. Once you've done your wash, you take your kitchen toe. So I'm going to use this technique again way I folded into He says that I think this creates quite a good for effect. You twisted nice and tight. I'm going to create some of those wiped ripples in the background that you might see in between the waves likely like and they would be small, but they would also get a bigger coming up to the front. So you relax your hold on the twists a little bit, you get it around a little bit in French could even just start rolling it. But depending on how much space you have, if you did want to add a bit of beach, um, sort of here before your before and not just do a water painting You could also use just a raw sienna is only good color to use for beach sand. Just add a little bit of that on to give you a picture, some texture. So there we have a few of those ripples in between the big waves and you could do those ripples. You could also have done them with your job pistol, and then you would have more of this sort of military effect in between, which is fine, if that's what you see on your seat. If you have more Clinton between them, do that. And you could also just lift it out with a paint brush. You could use the tip of your paintbrush and you could lived some out while the paint is a little bit it. So you could use any of those techniques and practice them so that when you get to the seat , you know how to do them. Okay, So before we can finish off this one, we have to just wait for it to dry. Yes. Okay, so when this is Dr Cannot finish it off, so too do the clouds. You could even use a very very light. Wash off purple, Um, and something like a docks is in purple would work very well on and but a very light wash. It's like the colors being needy, but because there any working with blues today, I'll just use a bit of cup opening because we're going to use that under our waves now anyway. Well, and I'll show you what I do quickly make a very, very, very light wash. I don't really want a lot of color or and then normally, because I do this quickly when I'm outside, I just paint away the blue areas. But it's gotta be really wit. I mean, a white theories that are lifted out. And then I take my kitchen towel better and I just go over it again, and I left it out very quickly. So I tried to do this really quickly so that you don't see the lines and then you get towns to have a little bit of wide, a little bit of color. And if I find it's not quite the color that I like, we're not sexual enough. I wait for it to dry, and I might add a little bit of I'm football in name again, very light over they and quickly, quickly. I just added up indiscriminately so that these random bits of white and colored in my client's that's a really quick way of just doing clouds that are not pure What? All right, so to finish off our waves, the thing about doing waves surf is that they're not just white, but suppose they have a little shadow and insert. We're going to mix a little bit of our the same colors we've been using ultra marine, blue and green. But this time you want to make sure to be quite what dog, Because we're going to paint the wave shadow with us. Now, this doesn't work depending on how you apply. Your pastoral isn't always work so well. But it can also give nice results because of that irregularity. Okay, so you can see it. I can see it's nice and dark, and I use a small brush for this and I just use the tip and I hold my brush far towards the back. When I do this because you wanted to be regulated, I want to control the ship. So I just go very likely right at the bottom age of the wave, and you want to make a little bit of dog. Just like that, they're beginning to have escaped to add the color, even somebody so because in others you'll see it will make your waves look, look a lot more like real waves than just one splotches on the background. So they are, and some of them could be bigger. And later on, when we learn more about our depend water really with detail, you can draw some of this down into your water, really to create those different ripples of color. So you would do that and then suffer knows, just it's a little hard. Suffering is a little bit you don't have to. You could look at your picture and decide for yourself what you want to shed its image with the water, and then we do the same underneath the bottom shadow. But it also has to be smaller, because that's the way that's closest to shore. Okay, now, the last thing is that when you do the surf, you always have to remember. Do the doctor mix underneath with the waves of, um, calls over and falls on the water. So do the darker each underneath, and you would use a very light kobold makes to put on top. But we can't do that because we've used the job, the oil pastels. I'll show you that with the masking fluid now. But even if you just did the dog shadow underneath that already looks a lot more like wave , and that would be fine by itself. So the last thing that I do is I always like to just define my horizon line a little bit if it's not very well defined, I just make a very, like a bit of a dark, and I'm not too dark, but and I even do this with my pain sometimes. So in the last list and I'll show you how to finish off my pages. But they your there. You have a very simple scene, and I encourage you to play around with it and use the different techniques. Try putting a bit of sparkle in your water. Try lifting, outweighs instead of using kitchen tell because you might not have kitchen that much kitchen. Tell with you one day. Just try the different techniques and see how they feel for you. 9. Bonus: How I journal my pages: Okay, so that's a lower techniques. Done what? I wanted to just show you Waas what I do when I'm finished. So I would do Perhaps I will do this, but by the beach. And I would obviously put a bit of the scenery that I see. But I come home often and because it's my nature journal are treated like a criminal. So this picture I did in probably about 10 minutes. It was one of those days where everything waas just greyish green Isha and this is actually the sea. Even the probably looks more like a dam on river because it's so green. But that's the color it was. It was grey green, the trees obviously around here or green. Even the sky was great. And so I used my I used a bit of white wash painter, actually, because the sea literally just had a few small ripples off white in it, and that was it. So that's what I painted. And then I come home and I add aboard it mostly, not all the time, I just added, It's a hand drawn board in our rulers just with the black pin find marker and I sometimes use my friend market details in. But when I do the close on trees and plants and that sort of thing, I'll show you how to do that. So and then I usually use any kind of fun funds like fun looking handwriting funds. And I would put a hitting and I just right on active, right? What? What that page was about So, like on this page, this was another day. It was a very, very quick painting. I didn't have time for much. Andi, I came here when I added some pin in here and I just added something to the outcome of my mountains in the back and also to my horizon line and the trees that within I mean here I just wrote a quick thing about what the day was about in this page didn't even get a heading. So and it doesn't have a border. So every page is different on this page. So what I do is I don't always have the time to paint the whole picture when I'm out. But then also because we go to the same beach is fairly often I don't always want to paint the same scene. So when I don't feel like painting the scenery, then I look around and when I find interesting things on the beach, I just do a quick little family l sketch of them. Nothing too detailed. Like, um, these were some shells I found on the beach that day. And as you can see, they're not perfect, literally. Just thumbnail sketches just to remind off what was on the beach that day. And sometimes I would do blind come to a drawing, which I'll show you. I think you then expect this fine country doing so. I just write the hitting way We were to drink a beach and I rule it a little bit about what the day was about, who I was with, and why were they So it's more like my It's more like a journal. And then this is this is a blind contra dream. But he has to that I did, um, at a different beach. And I picked up in an interesting looking show and one of those pods that did you find on the beaches together often I don't even know what they're cooled. And, um, I did blind contra joined. Yeah, That's why it looks not like a show. So if you don't know blind counter drawing, you basically draw without looking at your page at all. You're only looking at your objects, and you don't repeat your page until you think you're finished. And so you'll end up with some very interesting drawings. But it does help you to really see the object that you're looking at. That's that's why we do it to practice, really looking at what we see instead of what we think received. So I did too blind contour drawings on the beach quickly. And then when I came home, I added a bit of paint on, and I wrote what it was about on that day. So these are some ways that I finish off my journal pages. Here's a different one that I did with a different view again. These were some not islands, but there the mountains along the bay going out to the side. That's some mountains in the back. The other C was again blue and green. There was trees in some plant, so you have to decide what you want to, including in your picture and what not and yeah, I just chose to wrote a little bit about where waas, um, around the tree on and I didn't put a border anymore. Normally on the back, I would drive the date so they don't know when they were done. And then in this book, this is a book that I keep. It's more for places that we're going to. So I wanted to show you this picture because this is where I use the techniques I just showed you I had. It's very Long Beach, and there's not a whole lot in terms of rocks and that sort of thing. There are cliffs further long, but I really wanted to be the beach. So I did a basic arise in mine. I did the same thing we did, and I used the white bestowal because I was out and I didn't. I my daughter with me, and she would also have to keep an eye on most about four. So I had to keep one eye on her and quickly came to what I saw. So I just used the pestle, and I used the best of in the middle here just to put a few little ripples as well, And Adam, just a little bit of beach with some shells and that sort of thing, which I will show you in an upcoming listen as well. And then, yeah, I directly word long, Babe. And I just wrote some point form things of the day. And in this book, I write, you know, sort of one of those travel books. And instead of putting photos, I just fall in. Who, What, When, Where? Why? And I write it so he has two more. This is a picture of the beach. It's close up just off the suit that little bits of foam on the water as it flows back into the sea. I really like that. So this will be in an upcoming Listen, definitely. And again I just write day that sea foam and I used to find funds I didn't Our planet and a road. Some details on this one was again different Beach, This one we had, we have lots of islands around. So on a clear day you can see lots of the islands in the distance, had those and then the see a bit of surf again, which I did with my white pastoral because this is normally what I use when I'm out. Because it's so quick. This and the rolled up kitchen cell and I would use the masking tape when I paint something at home would not take a photo, and I want to paint it at home. I use masking tape indoors. So I did this with the pistol, and I just paint a little bit off the beach and forth, going down. And I used pain for detail again, and I filled in the details here. So that's just an example of what you could do with your nature journal. How you choose to a range of pages is up to you and how much you choose to write on these up to you. This is just some examples of what I do with mine. I hope you have as much fun with yours. I have mine
