I'll teach you step by step, how to create three variations of tight I effects. And I'll walk you through everything that you need to create your project, which will be to make a tide I effect and use it for a digital background. I can't wait to share with you this really fun trick looking forward to seeing what amazing projects and tidy effects you create.
2. Twirl - Part 1 / Effect #1: Hey there. I'm Morgan Lindsey Nelson. And welcome to my skill share class on how to make tight I effects and photo shop. We're going to start with a new document. I'm study mine at 1920 by 10. 80. I do have my resolution at 300 because I'd like to have the option to print this effect that I'm doing. If you just want it for your computer or something that you're gonna put on the Internet, you can change this to 72 and just make sure that you haven't set RGB color. We'll hit. Okay, then here we have our blank canvas. And over here in the layers panel, we have this as the background toe. Unlock it and convert it to a layer. Will just hit the option all key and click that Locke and will convert it to a layer. So we're going to start out by putting a Grady it down. And I don't know about you, but sometimes I get stuck with colors, and I just can't think of what kind of color combinations I want. So this is one my favorite tips. We're going to start by drawing four squares because our ingredient is going tohave are greedy is gonna have four color points to it. Just take four squares just totally random. And then when I do, is I grab an image from a movie or an album cover something that I like. I just google it and I find an image and I select the color from that. So here is one for Moonrise Kingdom, which is one of my favorite Wes Anderson movies. I will just click on it and sample this color. This is the hex code here. We will copy that. Go back into our document and take this square right here and double click it and we will pace that hex code and that will change to that color. And then we'll just go back and switch between them and just get a couple more colors. If this is looking a little bit more green than I'd like, I'll just slide this up to Blue and copy this hex code here and do the same. Little dance will hop to the next rectangle and double click there paced. Okay. And keep going. I like that a little bit lighter. A copy live up to the third rectangle paste and one more. Let's see. Okay, like this cream a little bit lighter to with that one. Okay. And last rectangle, see? And then you have this really fun, cool color palette that you might not have been ableto come up with before. I just love how it's fun repurpose ing that image into this cool tight I that we're gonna dio I'm gonna click the Grady int button right here. And if it's not showing up for you, just click. If it's the paint bucket, you can talk all between them, so you just click on it and then you can make sure the greedy int tool is selected here. I have the simple palette. If you aren't seeing this, you can click the gear icon right here and go down to simple click. OK, and then it will switch there for you. So and then whatever showing here, for example, this is selected click right here in this will pull up for you the Grady int editor. So I want have force. I'm gonna click here and click here to make four. This one I want to be this color so I'll hover over and the eyedropper will change it to that. I will then click on this other one and I want to change that to 40%. And I drop her on that one. This one I want this 1 80 upside 70 for that one. And this last one in this. And look at this color and this last one will be square. It's that at 100 and we'll sample this color and there I think I'm gonna move this a little bit. 30. There we go. There we have our ingredient. We can delete each of these rectangles. You can either highlight it and hit the delete key on your keyboard or click and drag it to the trash can down here. Okay. With the greedy, it's still selected. We're just going to draw a line across star document anta beautiful ingredient. And we are going to start building the effect off of this, Going to convert this to a smart object You can right click on the layer over here on the text if you do it on here and I'll come up with different options. So go here and then say convert to smart object and what this will do is this will maintain this separately from the effects that we're gonna put on it. So you can always come back and change the colors, The Grady int any kind of detail without affecting all of the things that we're gonna build upon it. So it's called non destructive, and we're going to start with adding a twirl go up to filter, distort twirl. And this one I like it. Is that the highest Taurel it can be and you'll see that it is a little smushed. So what we're gonna have to do is make it because it's a widescreen rectangle shape. We're gonna have to make it a square. So we're gonna have this layer selected and hit command on a Mac or control on a PC. And then the letter T is in Tom and this you can just ignore it might pop up for you, or you can just say, Don't show again. Hit okay and you'll see that the Torah went away. But that's OK. And then we're gonna bring this up and there until it's a nice square you can see here. It says that the width is 6.4 inches But we will make the heights the same and then just hit return to release it. And there you go a nonce, mushy little spiral for you.
3. Twirl - Part 2 // Effect #1: now what we're going to do is create a new layer, and you can hit shift command and or on your keyboard. Or you can go down here to the bottom of the layers panel and click this button here and you will get a new layer. So we're going to make this a smart objects that we can utilize smart filters, and this will make sure that all the filters we can go back and edit, and we'll go up to filter, render and clouds. Now, this looks a little kind of dramatic, but it's gonna look really great when it's done, and you can tell that it takes a little bit of the tone of whatever this top color is. Now we want to go back and undo it. You can also hit D, as in dog on your keyboard, to get it back to this normal black and white, and I'll show you what that looks like. Waken do that. And now the thing about clouds is is that it's generated as it is. There is very little customization that you can dio, except you can keep changing the cloud formation. I just double click here under smart filters and it'll change it. And also you can go into filter and right before you click on clouds, if you hit down the option all button, it will make it very high. Contrast. So you can play around with both and see what you like. But for now, I want to take it off of that and just do this normal version. So we're going to go into filter, distort and select pinch with this top layer set that at 100%. Okay, you can see how it gives it that radio affect just really cool. We're going to change this to linear Dodge, and you can see that looks very intense. So we're going to adjust the levels by putting an adjustment layer on top of it. If you click down here at the bottom of the layers panel, go to levels now, Right now, by default. What is going to do is it's gonna adjust the levels all the way down. But we just wanted to do this top layer with the clouds. So what you'll do is hold down the Ault option key and hover right here between the layer and just click and it will assign the levels just to this top layer. Now what we're going to do is a just thes I'm going to start trying this at 12 52 and to 12 or two Aleve in and see what I think of that. Then go down here and go to the output levels. Gonna try 35 2 42 now that I just have that as just a general thing toe work on. But each color and each one is going to be independent and its own unique things will just bring down the lightness Here, bring mid tones up. It's looking so great, isn't it really like tight I all that white there is what normally is overlooked by the dye process. I guess you'd say, OK, so I minus leave it there and close that back. And the thing that I always think are tied I is that it's so organic. And right now I toggle this off. The Taurel is a little uniform for my taste. So with this left on, I'm gonna go hover over and click on the bottom layer and go up to filter distort wave. Now, this one, you can see how already it's breaking that up. You can see that it's not that uniform look anymore. And for the wave, I like thes settings. Five for the number of generators. Wavelength 39 max 1 20 one men minimum 29 max, 56 horizontal scale and 39 vertical. If you don't really like this, you can also click the randomize button and it'll do different versions of the wave, so I'll just keep it there and just keep that those settings should be the same by default and click OK, and you can see already weaken Toggle the wave on and off. How it just adds more interest and it's giving this gorgeous die flare there, which I really love. And now one thing that I think of what tied I is how crisp some of the white is and how blurred some of the die is. I want to kind of give that more of an effect. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna click on this layer here, layer one. I am going to use the smart sharpen spoke up to Felter. Sharpen hoops filter, sharpen, smart sharpen. And here this will give it just some more realistic quality to it for the amount I'm going to try to go to and 43 for the radius and reduce noise. Zero. See how I like that? That looks a little artificial for me. So no, there. That's perfect. That is just look that I want. Well, okay. And you can see the difference that makes takes a while for it to go. But that just looks so t shirt to me, and you can adjust it however you like. It can be. If you want to back it off a little bit, you just double click. Smart, sharpen, and you can take the amount down and see if you like that better. And you can just click out 1 28 and they can click preview to see, and we'll just probably leave it there. This is the first time I effect the twirl spiral tied. I If we kind of go back to this color combination, you can kind of see how it picks up on that. And I just love it. I think it's so fun. We'll just save this. And if you want Teoh, do it for web. You can quick export here under file export, But always make sure to save it as a PSD file so that you can always go back and edit it. Next, we're going to go on to the other kind of tied I.
4. Freestyle // Effect #2: for this next tidy effect. I already have my colors selected, and I'm usually what it looks like using three colors and just give you a little sneak peek . I got them from this other Wes Anderson movie screen shop. I will go into radiant. It remembers the last colors I used, so I'll just take that. I can click this one and say, Delete here and move this location to 50%. We'll click and select the 1st 1 Select the color with the eyedropper. Go to the second, I drop it there and the sun, okay, and I can select these. I want to select them all. I can click this 1st 1 and then go down to this one and push the shift key and click on. Delete a little shortcut and we'll go all option and click the lock to convert it to a layer, and we're ready to draw our ingredient straight across there. We are going to convert this also to a smart object. So again, right click on here, or you can select the layer, go to the menu up here and say, convert to sort object. Also, I want to just give this background A little bit of extra interest. Instant Just the Grady int. So I'm going to go to distort Wave. Just add this little bit of texture I'll display in demise to see what I like. I like that and it just gives a little bit of Buller and movement to it. I'm also going to go in and do a little bit more with the ripple effect scale that house I can see slide back home for it just gives it a little bit of texture. I'm gonna go with minus 49. There think is that a little bit of slight, slight, slight texture might not have been enough, but I'm gonna go to filter and pinch. If you can't see all of it, you can pan around with this or go to this tool and selected to be smaller. This, I just think, gives it more dimension. And I think I like the looks of it a little bit more spherical, so I'll leave it there. This Look how pretty that is will turn it off to see what it was before. This was just the Grady int and then toggle the filters back on and It just feels more like how tight I acts. Okay, we're gonna add a new layer now. I mean, hit shift command on to do that, and we're gonna convert it to a smart object. Do you want to make sure that these air set to black and white And if they're not just hit D isn't dog on your keyboard and it will set them back. We're gonna go add some clouds. However, before you do that, we're going to do the old option. Hold on the all option key and then click. And that's how you get this really high contrast clouds we are going to then add a blur from the Blur Gallery under Filter Blur Gallery. You're gonna select tilt shift here. We're going to start dragging this dotted line down. You don't want it to touch the solid line, or else it'll make a really stark, stark line of blur. And you don't want that you want to look more effortless and natural, so we will go here under tilt shift to blur and set that zero distortion to 35. Click on effects and change the light to 27 the color to 35 she wouldn't do 30 and the light range. You can play with this. I'm going to start by doing 83 you can see how that just popped the white. And that's what we want on this one. I'm gonna try 1 78 and I think that's too much. So gonna back it off a little bit and I'll just leave it there. Then I'm going to go over to noise. Make sure it's set to grain change the amount 12%. The size to 25 roughness to 50 color 2 35 and highlights 2 56 Lastly, I'm going to address the focus from 100% to 45 and then it gives it and you can back it down a little bit more. Try 25. If you want more white all the way through it, or to give it a little bit more depth, I'm gonna leave it at 44. Then click OK, And there you have this. It looks a little scary right now, but we're going to change this to Linear Dodge and there, just like we did before. We're going to create an adjustment layer and just click the address Italy or Button and then select levels. And again, we're gonna only want it to be on this top layer. So had option out. However, until this little icon comes up and then click, I'm going to start trying levels out at 63. 1.13 and 2 55 there and then output. I'm going to try zero and two up to that. I'm gonna bring the light down men tones. That's such better. It's like masons sunny and then that all. Okay, that looks awesome. I believe that there. Then I'm going to do a little sharpening and see if that is needed. Some of them you won't need it cause it's such an organic process. Um, that some of them it might benefit from it. Oh, yeah, This is gonna look really good with that. I'm just gonna do any sleight address mint to here have 89%. It's toggle ing on and off. Yeah, like that. And then also, if you find that it's a little bright, you can also back down. The opacity of this layer has the clouds just to make it a little softer. 70. Yeah, I like that. And now if you want to do a little bit more, what we can dio is add a bit of a pinch to it. So I'm just gonna add a really slight the reverse pinch out to give it some movement there. And if I want justice, I just double click on that smart filter for Pinch. That might try it the other way. See what 80 looks like? Yeah, that's looking much better. Coming back it down just slightly, isn't it? Was lacking a little bit of center focus. And now I think it has it. I look so fun. Awesome. Let me show you the third variation of tai chi.
5. Linear // Effect #3: Okay, here we are in the next document. I already have my ingredients set up for two colors. Show you how you can just keep it even simpler just to be nerdy again. This is what I grabbed it from. I just love it but will come pink. So I'm gonna do a little different. I'm going to drop a diagonal Grady in. So just from corner to corner, there we go. And we're going to convert this background with option Ault, click the lock into a layer and convert the layer into a smart object. Now we're going to create a new layer. On top of that, I am going to fill it with the color. And I like to use the color. I'm gonna switch from the radiant tool to the paint bucket tool there, and I see the color that I'm using in it or a complimentary color. It might just make it a little lighter for a little darker. But for this on the stick with it said, Here we go. We're going to after you fill it. You're going to want to convert that to a smart object. You need to fill it first and then make it a smart object. Okay, And then we're gonna add a filter we're gonna go to render and fibers. Now, this will show you what they're going to look like. And what I like is 15 and one. I think that's a really kind of middle of the road one where it's not too weak and not too strong. I'll show you it could go really small and busy and then very, very water coloring. So that's why I like 15 and you can randomize it also to see which one that you like, I like one that feels like it's kind of going from both angles. It's like that one have some coming here from the top of this one from the bottom and a little bit of movement there. So click OK, and then we have that. Then I'm gonna go into filter, filter, gallery and select under brushstrokes. Sumi, for that, I'm gonna make sure that the width is nine. The stroke pressures seven, and the contrast is 24. But you can play around with this show. You just a little bit of what it does can actually I think I might bump it up a little bit . I think I like 34 for the contrast, and then the width will just be pretty obsolete. The contrast is those important, and the pressure will show how much shows through there. And we'll just keep that 17 Think like, OK, and then what we're going to do is add a little bit of noise under filter noise. It just has a little bit of texture that I like, very faint. I'm just using 2%. You'll see it a little bit more when we're done with this effect. I just leave it at uniforms and then click monochromatic. And then what we're going to do is we're gonna set this to the near Dodge. And if it's a little bit, if you have darker colors, you might have to experiment with this cause. Sometimes linear light works were here. It's not, but sometimes you have to, especially when you have lighter colors for your ingredients. At the bottom. Linear Dodge works quite well, and then we're going to add a motion blur under filter blur motion blur. I keep this at a distance of seven pixels angle. Zero click. OK, I couldn't see the difference go Just softens it there. What we're going to do is add levels to balance it out and adjustment layer levels. And again, we're going toe option Ault and Click. That said, it just goes with that layer. And for that, I'm gonna try 1.5 15 and 2 55 on 63 t 13. Okay? It's a lot more than I would like. We're gonna bring this one down to zero for sure. Mid tones dark in that bag Looks great. Okay? And I also want to reduce the opacity of this top layer. Looks great. Okay. Now I find sometimes this effect over saturates it. So if you need to do an adjustment layer and select hue saturation and leave, it said it goes on for all of it, sometimes minus 20 works. And if you want to know what it did, you could just untargeted lit and see. I just took the pink out of it a little bit. I'm not going to use it. I'm just gonna delete it, But just know that it's an option in case the colors get way too bright. I'm going to take this layer here and duplicate it, right click or it's like the menu and duplicate layer. And I'm gonna move that on top of the levels and make sure that the levels goes back to that one. You can see what it looked like before after, and you can choose which one you like. If you don't like the levels and want extra color pop, by all means. Now what we're gonna dio is take this and we're going to select thes smudge tool right here . Have the strength set to 10 mode to normal. Is gonna want to rast arise the layer, which is fine because it's a copy and I just want to pull pull down so that these get It's a nice color, said it feels more organic, kind of like needing it almost, and you can see how it's taking the harshness the way without making it too blurry. And you're getting the kind of mixture of the white and the color behind. It said it really has that kind of bleeding quality that tied I has. You don't want to do it too much, just pick pick areas. I like to do areas that have small little dots. They're because I figured those are the ones that are going to be the most blurred kind of in the center of ones, too. You think that that helps that you can see this side here. I've done a lot on in this side. I haven't. And this looks more natural, more organic than this one. So kind of true them up. So they match, I kind of find instead of going back and forth if you just pick one direction to go. I love that band. Never say one direction. I was like the band there. You can see how it's looking So much were natural, especially thes. I kind of want them to almost, like, bleed Teoh, gather in a way. Okay, Just finishing up and do a little side to side on some of these. I think that makes it look more for real. All right, now I'm gonna untargeted lists that you can see the difference that makes. And if you want to overlay this, it gives a really cool effect, and I'm going to just the capacity a little bit there and just untargeted lit and toggle it to make sure that I'm not losing all that I just did. And if that doesn't work, you can also try soft light or screen. If you wanted a little bit more washed out to you can just see the difference that made it really just gives that very linear. Very graphic tied I effect.
6. Changing colors & conclusion: So here they are, the three tight I effects that we've gone over the spiral and then the freestyle. I guess you'd call it tight I and then this linear version. They hope that this has unlocked so many options. You can always go back and click here, since it's a smart object and change the Grady int, you can do you all of that. Change it If you wanted to do this and this be, let's see with the fun color purple you can read, do the radiant and then just hit save and see how it updated it. So you have this freedom to adjust everything and even its unlimited only limited by your imagination. I can't wait to see what you come up with. And thank you for joining me. I'll see you next time.
