Meet Your Teacher

Hello, I'm Chris McClellan - Tableau fan and love teaching more people how to use Tableau effectively to see and understand data.

I have used Tableau for many years for many corporate clients, not for profits and even teach my kids how to use it for their homework.

I'm also a certified Tableau Desktop Qualified Associate and Tableau Community Ambassador.

Away from "work", I live in Australia so enjoy the climate and the outdoors.  I can be tinkering with my car or doing some work in the garden most weekends.

I'm new to Skillshare, so any feedback would be helpful or suggestions on what future classes can address.

1. Intro: Hi, guys. It's Chris McClelland hell. In this lesson, we're learning about the interface in trouble desktop. When you first talked about desktop, you'll be presented with this spring over on the left, you'll see it. We can actually kicked different data files in the middle. You'll have any workbooks even been previously, so you can get access to them quickly and over on the right is just a menu that tabloid populate themselves with the latest news and information visit the week and things like that. You can switch between this screen and the main screen by pressing the sparkle button in the top left corner, and this brings us over to the normal tableau desktop. We usually have a data source happen, but in this lesson we've concentrating on the interface so we can connect data. Or we would see at different data sources here. For each data source, you'd see the dimensions in the data Sal's and the measures in that data source. We've got the pages shelf. The Roman column shelves, the filter shelf, the marks card on the sheet itself. We've got three areas where we can drop fields if you'd like to, and that helps us to format the graph in the way we want down the bottom. I can switch back to my data source. If I wanted to, I could create new sheets, create new dashboards or credit your stories and you'll be building those as you go. The menu is all our quick access functions, so we can undo, and you can undo back to where you previously dampened the workbook. So you get actually undo past your last save on, then go back to any previous step. Obviously, Redux. We can save things. We can add a data source or pause out what updates or refresh waken. Add a new sheet. We can duplicate it current sheet. Well, we can clear our current sheet. We can swap rows and columns or sort in ascending or descending format. Just like Excel. We can change your highlight. Correct groups at on labels. Fix our access. Change the size of their dashboard so I can say just a standard size or Aiken feed it to the width of my stream or the height of my screen or both. If I choose entire view, I can show or hide my cards. I can go into presentation mode or I can share this with others. There's also the show me mean you're over on the side and we've got a listen dedicated to that as well. In the menu, there's a lot more features. I won't go over them all. It's a lot like any other application you would use. But there's farming you for ending and saving stuff. All that daughter options A here and where I work. Shade options, dashboard options, story options. Our analysis menu, which is mostly the same as what will find in an analytics here if we want to do any mapping or any formatting server work when we get to publish a window which controls the windows within tableau that we're looking at and it helped fall. If you need help with anything at all, that's it for the intra listen in. The next lesson will be connecting with data and actually starting to create some graphs 2. Connecting to Data: Hi, guys. It's Chris McClellan Here again. This is the lesson on connecting to data says a few different ways to think to data. We could go back on our sparkle button to remain page and there's a clinic in your heel. If we're on the main interface, we can come through and say data, you data source. I can click on this link here, and I can only access that link if I don't have a data source available at the moment. Or I can just go to my daughter source tab and takes him back to the main page as well. Within this course, we're only going to be using an Excel file. And the Excel file that I'm gonna be using is the sample superstore data. It depends on how you have installed Tableau. You will have some superstore data somewhere because tableau always comes with that. The directory structure may be a little different to mine. The file name might be different to mine, but as long as that superstore data, it'll work the same way. Click on open and we go to our data source tab and you can see that we've got the Excel file open and tableau has already realised that this street sheets in this file orders people and returns. If I drag my orders sheet over to the pain tablet looks at that sheet, and it understands that all these columns are available in my daughter. Tubal has already gone through and figured out the data type for each one. So Row I D. Is ah, whole number. Order I D is a string because there's some Alfa characters in there. Order date is a date. That's not a date in time. We don't have the times on here, so it's just a simple date, and it's understood that country and city geography fields. So when I click on here, I can say that the geographic roll off this dimension, his country on the geographic role of this dimension is city your dimension that may not be called country, city and state, but you can change into those geographic crawls as well. This is only a preview area, so only previous the 1st $1000 now in the pain at the top, I can actually join multiple sheets together. So if I joined against my returns sheet just dragging up there beside it. Tableaux looks at the two sheets, figures out automatically that the best join that tableau has figured out is between order . Idea on the left and order I D. On the right. So between the orders sheet on the return sheet, this may not always be right. It's always wise to go and check to see if the joins done properly. Now it's also assumed an inner join and in a joint means that it matches the values on both sides. So if you've already picked up on the screen, you can see that I'm now down to 800 records. As I said, this preview only goes up to 1000 records, so I fired delete returns completely. I've got over 1000 records because it only shows the 1st 1000 if I pull in my returns data and it does the inner join on order i d. I've only got 800 records, So all that saying is because I'm using in a join. I've got every order that I've ever had in the system. But when I'm matched up to my returns, my data set has now become only orders that have Bean returned and that's only 800 records . We can also see over on the far right that these fields come from orders. These two fields comes from returns. So the returned flag and the return or I d. And because I'm on an inner join, it's done an exact match between those two. Because I'm using Excel Dollar. I've got the choice. I can actually left join it or right, join it or do a full out of joint. So if a lift join us, I'm going to go back to 1000 rows because I've now gone back to all the orders plus the returns data if it's available. So in all these orders are looking at now, there is no return data. If I saw it quickly, I can see that all these orders at the top now have been returned. They've got data on the right side, and they've match it with the data on the left side. But because I'm using a left join, I can also have orders that have got no return dollar. It doesn't really make sense in this data set, but I could actually do right, and it swept around the other way or I could do a full out our and get both sets from both sides. But for this exercise, I'm going to do a left and I can see I'm back over my 1000 rows. I've got some orders that have been returned, but I also have orders that haven't been returned. It'll also on this screen I can determine my connection type. So a live connection means I'm going back to excel all the time. And every time I do something in tableau, it will re query the Excel file. I could extract my daughter, and that actually means that it takes a copy into tableaus, as it says they into tubal, his own daughter engine. And when I do that, I can actually determine if I need any filters on that daughter. If I need to aggregate that daughter, it'll or how many Bos do I want to bring back so I can actually filter down from my original Excel file into the extract right? He If I use an extract and the daughter in the Excel phone changes, I'm gonna have to refresh the extract. So again, for the purposes of this lesson, I'm not going to extract. I'm just going to use a live connection. On top of that, you can also choose a data source. Filter said data source filters work on the dollar as well, to restrict in exactly the same way what we're seeing in Tumbler. So again, if I added a filter to say I only want to see the furniture category, I would only see furniture records in here and nothing else. Now, also on here. I've done my join between order I d on both sides so we can see that in my orders table. I've got an order I d and I'm matching it to in my returns table. I also have an order i d. And if I sorted, I can see that they're the same thing. That order idea in the first record now that I've sorted it is the same, is already on the first record here. All that means is when I go to my sheet and start doing my graph, I've got an order I d in my orders table on an order I d in my returns table. Obviously they named differently because tableau can't have two fields off the same name, so I may not want that. I could simply go to my or I d returns and hide that field and now I don't see it. I don't see it in this screen. And when I switch back to my sheet, I don't see it here. If you want to unhygienic, simply go back to the data source show Hidden feels, and it would appear in a gray color rather than black. I go in and unharmed the field. Now when I go back to my sheet, I can see it. And as I said previously, where we've got a data source attached, I could see the dimensions and the measures in that data source. I don't have to stick with the default name. I can rename it here and just call it orders or even on the data source window I can right now. But here and then when I go back to my sheet, it's still the same night. That's the end of this listening about connecting to data. We'll come back and cried. A simple graph 3. Create a Simple Graph: Hi guys. It's Christmas column with the lesson off creating a simple graph. So in the lost listen, we connected to a dot assholes. We can see the data source here, and we can see all the dimensions and midges related to that data source. I've got some geographical measures here, so it could be a simple as double clicking on city, and I get a map of all the cities in my data source. Now a few things have happened here. The first young in a tackle is that down in the bottom right corner, it says. I've got 347 unknown cities. If I click on that, I can do a few different things with the city's. I can show them in the default position. Now, in this instance, we don't want to do that, because if I should click on show dot or default, position all the cities that it doesn't understand where they are. It puts down here at 00 and Abedin is not off the coast of Africa. So let's under that try again. Click on the indicator again. I can also filter the data that doesn't change the map. It all. It just put in a filter about getting rid of all these cities. That trouble is not sure where they are. We don't really want to do that either. So if we click on the indicator again, let's try editing the locations. When you go into little locations, one of two things will happen, it says. Ambiguous here and under certain circumstances, it might say unknown. So if it doesn't know where evidence is, it will say unknown because it knows wherever Dany's. But there are several Avedon's in the U. S that comes up and says ambiguous. So it's basically saying which Abedin you're talking about now I've got my settings up here to help with that. I've got us country. I've got no state. I'm looking at my city dimension. I do have a state dimension if I can use so I could simply come here and say, What state do you want to use? You can use none. You can use a fixed state, but I can only choose one state or I can use a field and tumblers automatically selected the state field because that's what tabloids guest is the right to mention to use so you might need to change that. In this case, it's guest perfectly. I don't have any conflicts anymore. I can click on OK and two things have happened. Obviously, the indicators disappeared down the bottom. And I've got my 347 cities added to my map because it now knows the difference between Aberdeen in those different areas. So that's had a credit symbol map. It's just putting the city and the state on your map to locate the daughter. That senior data source I could start from scratch and credit brain new sheet on this sheet . I might like to show my regions so I can double click on region and the sales for the region and double click on Siles. Now if I just double click, they go to specific places on the sheet. I know that I don't like this display. I would rather have sounds as a horizontal bar graph. So to do that, I could move sales to the columns, and I've got my whole simple bar graph. If I don't want sounds, it'll I can just remove it. If I want to look at profit instead, I don't have to double click on profit if I know I needed on the column shelf, I just dragged up to the column shelf and it does the same thing. I might look, look at sales Instead. I'm gonna change my mind and get back so I can drag sounds and I can put it beside profit so I can have to buy a graphs. Or I could put it exactly on profit and basically replace it. So profit disappears and now have any vote? Siles. If I wanted to make the bars a little bit bigger, I can just give the dimension values a bit more room. So I've got a horizontal bar graph to make a vertical bar graph. The easiest way to swap these tiles around it. Simply click on the swap button or press control W. And that just swaps everything that's on the columns with Rose and everything that's on the roads of the columns. But for what I'm aiming for, a bar graph is what I'm actually looking for. I can create another sheet this time I'm going to use order date. So if I drag order date of onto the columns because order date is a date Dimension type. It will automatically format two year and tableau understands the hierarchy between year, quarter months and die again undo. If you don't want that stuff on way back to you, I'm going to look at my profit over time, so I just drag profit onto Rose. I feel that crafts a little bit squashed so I can just grab the side of it. I'm a bit bigger, so I see the difference already if I put City on the graph straight away. Tableaux assumed it was a map because city was a geographic dimension when I just put region on a map because regions just a text dimension had just assumed a bar graph and when I put order, date on the sheet because order date is a date dimension. When I put the measure on their it credit the line because time is usually continuous and it created a line out of it. Now on all of these, I can actually go back and change it as well, so I could really change my profit craft toe a bar graph if I wanted to do that. But if I put it on automatic because table is looking at the date dimension up here, people a shame. A line graph. So that's how to create simple Grafton tableau will have a workshop to do this so you can get some hands on. 4. Graphing Workshop: Hi guys. It's Chris McClellan here again. So the workshop for a simple graph is simply too. Create another graph. Doesn't matter how many sheets you've got down here that's credit in your sheet and just do the same as what we did. But this time we're going to use this segment dimension. I'm going to drag segment up to Rose, and I'm going to drag sales under columns. I'm going to make the bars a little bit beyond so you can drag between the dimensions. Now it's nice to have as sheets nine properly, so I'm going to call my sheet bar graph. I'm gonna create another sheet. This time I'm going to use my order date, and I'm going to just change that tile itself to quarters the year one. So not the ones up here. Water says Quarter Q 2 2015 And I'm going to look at profit along those use, and I'm going to rename that sheet and call it profit line graph. So that's all we need to do in this workshop. As long as you've got a bar graph and a profit long Griff, that's the end of the workshop. Thanks 5. Filters: Hi guys. It's Chris McClelland Here again, this is a listen on filtering your data so we can filter in a few different ways. Ultimately, it will always bulled into what's on the filter shelf. So it's always wise to look at what is over here, because this is going to determine exactly what you see on your sheet. So the easy ways that filtered to begin with is I can just click on Home Office and I can say keep only so instantly. That creates a feel for on segment, obviously, because that's the dimension I'm talking about with the value of home office, and now the only thing I can see is home office. If I under that, I could also drag segment from my row shelf. But the mouse point is telling me that it's going to move segment. I just want a copy segment and then drop it. And then this dialog box comes up so I can choose which segments are gonna look at. So I might want to get rid off everything except for consumer. I can get back and edit that filter, I concede in the bottom straight away, our money choosing one of three values. I've got no other wild cards, conditions or limits in place, some purely selecting from what I can see on my screen, just the consumer value. I can also show that filter so that the users can actually change it so I can see consumer like an add on corporate, I can add on home Office I could do seems like customized, so I can't choose the all value. So I don't have that value at the top, and I can also choose the interface off the filter. So do I want a single value least so basically, just radio buttons? Do we want a single value drop down list again? Still, any choosing a single value? But it's how I choose that values changed a little bit. Or do I want to choose a single value on a slider? So either move the slider along or click on the arrows? Always only a single value because our money choosing one of these single values, I can do a multiple value list where I can actually see the values I know which one I'm clicking on, or the same thing with the drop down or the same team of the custom list, so he would have to actually type in the values arm after and check that value to make it visible on the screen or a Walcott match works the same way we could say I only want relevant venues in my data set, So at the moment, I'm looking at all the values. Depending on my other filters, I might only want to change it to relevant values we've been looking at include. But we can also flip the filter around and say I want to exclude, so I'll show you how exclude works. It's especially easy to see if we've got a multi value list selected, and I can now say these the ones I don't want to see. So I don't want to see consumer. You can see it, strike it out and I don't see consumer as a segment, or if you don't want people to change the filter, you can simply hide the cut. The filter still applied. It's only applied to consumer at the moment, like coming from here quickly and say edit, filter. And maybe I just want to choose to when you got one chosen, you can see the value. But when you have multiple chosen, you want to be able to see the value on the field here. Also in filtering, I've only been using the general tab. I can use a wildcard tab to match for certain values in the field values. I can do some sort of condition so no condition or by field, maybe a range of values or formula. Or I could do a top or bottom 10 or whatever number of chosen based on some numeric venues or formula to figure out what values off segment I'm going to see. So whenever you use these other tabs and come back to the general tab, you can always see in here what you replied. So again, Segments only got three values, so it's a little bit different in this regard. I've chosen two of them being consumer and corporate only. I'm not looking at home office at all, and I'm doing a top 10 of those based on sales. So obviously I'm always going to get those two because I'm choosing 10 but on a dimension with a lot more values that would make more sense so I could do the top 10 States or the top 10 cities. Things like that, you're gonna have different filters as well. So I could have the fielder for segment. And I could also bring over the filter for order date because order date is a date dimension again. I've got a lot of different date choices here. I'm just gonna choose years. I'm going to say 2017 only, and there's the data for only 2017. Again, I could share this filter. And if it's a multi value, I can addled my years together or any combination of used together. Or I might say, that's silly, that I'm giving the users the ability to add 2014 and 2017 together so I might go in and choose a single value least. So I want to add all four years together. I may not want that. So Aiken customize and don't show the all. And now I can say there's my 2014 sales 15 or 16 or 17 and you can see as I go the access changes all the time. So in 2017 Consumer sold just a little bit under 332 K bidding 2014 they sold just over 266 k The access changes. So you've always got the majority of the graph is data. If you don't want the filter anymore, just drag it away to get rid of it. On my profit line graph, I might want to do the same thing in the same way. Or did it comes over it? A filter. Choose my years. Choose which single year it is, and that will show me the quarters in that year. Exactly the same applies. That's the list on Filtering will come back with a workshop in the next video. 6. Filters Workshop: Hi, guys. It's Christmas clone here again. So the workshop for the filters were simply going to do what we were just looking at on the profit line graph. I'm just going to drag over order. Date onto the filter shelf, choose he's and choose 2017 Only. Once you do that, you can see that you've only got the quarters for 2017. And if I show my filter, I can see my years there. And if I customize my filter, I can turn off Mayall value. And I can also customize my filter to click on a single value drop down so I can only choose a single year on my bar graph. I'm going to do a similar thing. I'm going to get order. Date on drag that two filters pecan years click on 2017. I click OK, share the filter, but for this one, we might like to keep it so that I can choose multiple years or all if we need to. That's the end of the workshop 7. Marks Card: Hi, guys. It's Chris McClelland here again. So in this Listen, we're gonna learn all about the marks. Cut the marks card. Is this area over here? So they look at it to begin with, I'm going to create a simple graph. I'm going to do the same as what I did before. I'm going to choose a dimension being shipped mode. Put that on Rose. I'm going to choose a measure being discount. Put that on columns. Maybe I'm going to sort. My daughter said I know that my highest shit mode is my standard class. Make my columns a little br by going format column size taller or again, the shortcut is control up. And that's basically what we've been covering before. But this time I'm going to start using my marks card. So first he will look at color. I can do a few things with color. I can click on it the way it is and just choose the single color for all my bars because I'm using ship motors a dimension on the graph itself. I could put ship mode on color and therefore I will get a different color for every ship mode. Okay, so I could come over here and edit my colors. Or I could click on color itself and go back into edit colors. What's happened here is tableau has chosen the automatic palette, and there's a lot of different parents to choose from, and you can add your own down the bottom as well. So Trouble has just chosen the automatic palette, and its assigned the first color to the first value, the second color to the second value and so on. If I wanted to choose another pallet, I could go down to summer and then a sign pellets, and it does exactly the same thing again. And when I click apply, I can see what those colors look like in my graph. For something like ship mode, you might know that standard class needs to be a certain color, and everyone in the business understands that standard class is that color. Double click on standard class. Choose the color Click I second class might be a different color. First class. Is that a gold color and same day normal, Just black. Okay, see the changes here again, I the click apply or click OK, and the changes that reflected in the graph. I know those colors are determined by ship mode because over in the Marks card ship mode is against color. If I take ship mode away from color, I'm back to the green that I had assigned before. And if I hadn't assigned that color, I'd be back to the default Navy blue in Tumbler. Now again, I'm using discount to look at the size of the Barnes so I could put discount on color as well. And this time, when I go on it at my colors, I get a different color palette because I'm now using numbers or a continuous range. If you like it, set the palate automatic. It's looked at my colors and chosen dark blue again as my finish color. And I can change that, too. Whatever I like, maybe let's get Kring and again, like grain. True, there were dark green, depending on the numeric value of the bath. If I don't like the Grady int, I can choose him. He steps I have and change what those steps are. So I might like to just go four steps because I've got four values. And what's that now saying is that out of those four values, these three are in the lower range. Nothing's in this range. Nothing's in the in the upper middle range, if you like, and I've got standard class in that top range. If I don't step it, it's that graduation the whole way through. I could reverse the value if I like, and then choose the lowest color, not the highest color or going toe advanced and choose the start end. And if I've got a diverging palette, the center off those values as well, I'm just gonna leave it like that. The size is the next control on the Marks card for going to size. I can choose the size of the bars so I can make them take up all the space or only a little bit of the space. But the tumbler default looks pretty good. I can choose to show my labels or not. So the fast way to do labels is that just take on on the toolbar at the top and you get the numbers at the end of the bar. If you need to customize those at all, we need to go into label, and I can do that same turn on and off from here. A swell from here. I can customize the text, the font, the alignment because I might want to left. Align them, brother in order Michael on them or I could middle align them as well. And I can rotate the text around. I can choose, which marks the label. So at the moment I'm choosing all I could just say only label the minimums and the maximum in the entire table. I've only got the minimum and the maximum, but not the other two values again. Personal preference. What do you want to do? How do you want the graft to look? Detail adds more dimensionality to your graph or changes the way that it looks and tool tip is when I hover on data Marca. What do I see so I can customize the tool tip I might let just call this shipping mode. I can see that I might want to add more detailed to my tool tip so I could add in sales as well as discount. Just drag sounds under tool tip. You could see it's in the tool tip there. When I go to my tool tip sales hasn't been added, and that's because actually came in here before and customize my talked it by adding this change. If I reset my tool tip, I can see now that I've got first revalues, but I want my talk to be more unique. Coming to here and saying something like Shit mode has a discount off and sales off, and what I'm doing is just using the insert menu, obviously choosing the value. I can preview it here and see what it looks, what it's going to look like or click OK, and there my tool tip is a sentence with the data in it. Maybe I don't like my discount being a single decimal place. I could go into the field and formatted and say, In my pain, I want my numbers toe Have is your additional places on that fixes it. I don't have dollar signs of my values. I can come back to my tool. Tip SE has a discount off dollars and sells off dollars and now told hippies customized to do that as well. The marks, Cuddle said, changes depending on what sort of graph you've got. So you might find that if I've got a polygon graph. I'll have a path mark here. Over. You see, these data doesn't work really well as a polygon. If I've got a pie graph, I would have an angle again. The data is not set up properly to do a pie, which is why it's looking like that. But this daughter is best set up at the moment to be a bar graph. If we close that format menu, we get back to the normal dimensions and measures on the side. That's he ended. Listen on. The Marks card will come back with a workshop. 8. Marks Card Workshop: Hi guys. Chris McClellan here again. So this is a workshop for the Marks card. What we're going to do is go back to your bar graph and just for a little bit of difference . Even though we've got sales is the bars, we're going to put profit on our color. So that means that you can see that the darker color is our higher profit. And in this case, it is our higher sales as well. So that wouldn't always be the case. We're also going to goto our profit line graph, change the size of the line and make it a lot thicker. Click on their labels and show Mike level and then the bottom in the Marks toe label. Choose Min and Max choose table, and you should get the lowest and the highest value across that graph. So now when I change my filter, I can see that I get the lowest and highest for 2014 2015 or whatever years I'm choosing also in the profit line graph because we're in looking profit. I want to look at my sales and quantity as well. So I'm going to drag my sales measure onto my tool tip. And I'm also going to drag quantity under tilted. I look at my tool tip and they're not quite in the order that I want. So I'm going to go into tool tip, change my sales. I'm just gonna grab the entire line and move it to above quantity. And I'm also gonna have a gap between profit and sales. So just press return there, click OK. And now my tool tip is the way that I want it. That's the end of the workshop. 9. Show Me: Hi guys. Chris McFarlane here again and in this lesson will be looking at the show me menu. So to you, show me to begin with we need a graph. So we're gonna do a simple graph off order date on our columns and let to put sales on arose as we know from previous lessons, Tabler looks at the dimension water date on because it's a date dimension. And because we've got measure ir rose, it creates a line graph between the four years. So if I click on the show me menu over on the side, you can see that it's quick access to creating some of these graphs. Some of them are disabled because we don't have the appropriate dimensions and measures in our sheet. So if I look at a map, for instance, you concede on the bottom, it says. For symbol maps, try one geo dimension, zero arm or other dimensions and zero or two measures, So I don't have that on my sheet of the moment, so I can't build a symbol map. I can build a pie chart. So as soon as I click on the pie, tabloid changes of graph to be applied graph and you see for a pint again down the bottom, I need one or more dimensions, which I've got. I've only got one dimension being order date and I need one or two measures and I've got cells and profit. Okay? And if they're disabled, you can't access those. But it's easy to see that for a bullet graph. I need zero or more dimensions and two measures. So I need to put two measures on here in order to build a bullet graph. If you wanted to build a bullet graph, same thing we could say. Undo that. Take it back to line, bring profit in here a swell and profit in there. So I've now got two crafts, profit and sales. But all the requirements from the sheet the button for bullet graphs, is now enabled. Click on the button and get my Bollegraf. Now you might like the bullet graph like this with a little bit more space, and maybe have Siles against profit, not profit against sales. But that's where that show me works. It makes the biscuits with the data, and you need to change it around if you need to. So let's get back to our pie. I can get rid of profit. Put sounds back on the sheet. I can change to a pie graph and there's my pie graph. I might also like to say, Well, I don't want sales determining the size of the pie so I can take that away and you can see that doesn't affect the size of the pirate all but I believe that on there, if I had region on my columns, you can see that now. I've got a pie for each region, and sales is determining the size of the overall pie. And sounds is also determining the slices within the pie and the slices of determined by the year of the order date of. I don't want the pies to be different sizes. I can just take away size and now all the pies of the same size. But you can see the split of year within H region, so show me is just a quick way of getting to those options. You quickly say I want an area charm. There's every chance things like that. It should also remember that everything you can build in show me you can build yourself without using Show me at all so I can actually build box and whisker plot, using the data that I've got there right now without using Show me it would take more steps to do. It's a lot easier or faster to just say just one click and I've got the graph there. Okay, I could do that myself, without using Show me at all, but it would take more time, and there's more settings involved with that. To do this without using, show me, I would have to right click on the Axis and go and create the reference line with all the settings like this within the box to actually get the proper banding on the proper display within their That's it for Show me we'll just do a quick workshop on that as well. 10. Show Me Workshop: Hi guys. It's Chris McClelland here again and we're doing the workshop for the show Me? Listen now, and I'll show you a few more things in this workshop as well. So just a show had really easy tableau is Sometimes I'm just going to double click on sales , double click on profit. And because I've put two measures on their tablet thinks I'm looking for a scatter plot. I'm going to double click on order Date. So then I'm gonna scatter plot over years. I'm going to then click on Show Me and I'm going to choose a tree map, which is in the fourth row of buttons down and the 1st 1 on the left. So when I do that and I'll just close the Show me menu so I can see everything, tabloid goes Okay, so let's look at a tree map. I'm doing it by years, so I've got four squares because I know I've got four years in my data source. The color is driven by sales, so a darker color is a higher sales level, and the size of the square is driven by profit, so a larger square is a large profit. But I don't want this by years. I want this by months, so we're going to click on the year water date field and scroll down to where we see month , May 2015. So make short says the May 2015 on the right, as opposed to the one above that which is just May. So we want to split the month into month and year. So it's the May 2015 option and click on there, and we've now got a train map again. We've got no filters on here. This is what we're aiming for. We've got all the months in the database. The color is based on sales. The size is based on profit. One thing I see straight away is that indicated, and the bottom is basically saying, We've got two months where we had a negative profit and it's impossible to draw and negative value as an object. So it just marks it down there as we've got to negative venues to display. We'll leave that there for now, and we're going to call this sheet my monthly profit tree map. That's it for the workshop 11. Calculated Fields: Hi guys. It's Chris McClelland again. And in this listen, we'll be talking about calculated fields you can see from the daughter source on the left. I've got my dimensions, and my mission is so I might like to create a quick display based on my category and look at the prophet and sales for each of those categories. Now what I'm really trying to get is the margin for each category, and margin doesn't exist as a measure, so I can calculate that within tableau itself, I can click on the menu here and going to create calculated field. Or if I know that my margin is gonna be based on profit, I can just click on profit itself and create calculated field, the difference being that when I take it from profit at pre populates profit for me within the calculation. Now I need to name my measure. It's always good. Call it margin, and I know that margin is simply profit divided by. And if I start with the left square bracket and just typing s, I know it's gonna be sales, you can type it in yourself, but you can use the auto feel within tabloid to make it a lot easier for you. The calculation is valid. I can click OK, and all I've done is actually creating margin as a calculated field. I know it's a calculated field because there's a little equal sign just of left of the data type, so I can now double click on margin bringing across and there, would you say, Now I look at this straight away and I know what's wrong. If I've got 18,000 profit and 742,000 sales, the answer is not ready to. What's happening here is because of the way I actually created margin. Let's go back and edit it again. I calculated the margin is being profit divided by Siles, so that's actually a non aggregate function. What that means is it's gone to every row within my spreadsheet provided profit by sales and then some that at the end what I really want to do is some profit. So just type in here. I want the sum of profit by category, obviously, because it's in my sheet, I want the sum of sales and now what happens in tableau is it's basically saying I've got a problem with margin because of the way it's now been changed. So I can't some. Or it can aggregate a column that's already being aggregated to fix that simple ways that just drag margin back onto there and seeing announces AG. So it's not something margin anymore knows that margin is already aggregated and I'm getting zeros. I also know in tableau that it's running off to the nearest whole number. So if margin is the percentage, let's go on format margin as a percentage. So I conform at it here, and it will only formatted for this current sheet or I can full minute here. The four properties number format changed to a percentage on. Maybe I just want one decimal place. And then because I formatted on the measure, it will apply everywhere where I use margin. So I now see that's right, 2.5% 17% and 17.4% also within my calculated field. Get back in it. Is it again? I've got my help menu ever on the side. I can open or close that as I wish, and if I've got it open and I'm typing things in here, so even if I just want to type and if just type, if impressed Tab and the help on the side changes to. If so, I can now see the syntax that I need to type in for my statement. So I need if and then I need an expression so I could say country equals U S. A. Something about that and then continue on with much in text all the time down the bottom. It's evaluating the code. It knows at the moment that it's wrong and I've got a syntax era so I might be missing an operator. The rial era is that this shouldn't be here as soon as I delete it. It evaluates probably on the calculation works. Calculated field works the same as any other measure. The only difference is that tableau is doing the calculation on the data when you use the measure, I could just as easily put margin at the beginning of this list of values, I might put profit on the end. The beauty of this is I don't even need profit all Siles on my visualization anymore, so I could quite easily do this and have a bar graph for margin only and thick it round and maybe just put it on circles so I can see the difference. Say Okay, so now margin is a cake that field because it's an aggregate, I can't further aggregate beat. So the field he will say egg. And that's because, in my calculation, I've already done my activity combinations and it works properly. One of the most common areas that you'll see when you're creating your calculated fields is this era where it says cannot makes aggregate and non aggregate arguments with this function. And mostly that's because in the same examples we got here, we've missed a some some way. Or if you're referring to dimension values, you haven't used the A t t r function to put the dimension in here while you're doing sums as well. That's more of a logic problem now Syntex era. But I could just say I only want to calculate margin from finish furnitures 2.5%. So if I just did this'll, I could say if country country equals furniture thin, do some else do nothing. There's no else. I'm still getting an aggregate versus non aggregate problem. That's because he our only deporting the i t tr function. Now it works. So I've got an aggregate function here to match my aggregate function here that matches my aggregate function here. As I said before, if I miss one, don't gonna work. And if I've got that one there and I miss one from down here On other of those sums, it's still kind of work once it's completely balanced. It worked perfectly. And obviously, as my logic says now, if I go and test it, I've only got furniture margin on I don't have finisher margin because I've made a typo up here as well. I'm looking at country called furniture. I really want the category called furniture again. Aiken. Just what I just did there was, say, less square bracket C A categories. He only see, I think in my data source, press tab filled it in properly. The calculation still valid. It was valid before. I just didn't have any countries called furniture. Now I've got a categorical furniture and suddenly I get my 2.5%. The other ones annuls what I might like to do. We say, Well, if it's not furniture, I want to make it 20 and now for two zeros Now, I could do this a different way. I'll just click OK there and use a shortcut of undoing that changed that calculated field. So if we undo back to when we had a furniture country rather in the category, I'll change it back again and I'll change it back again when we better where we were before , they're using a different way. Let's put profit on him. Replacing an lodge in Let's put Sales on here is well, because I've got two fields up here. I've got two axes and I'm going to create 1/3 axes. But this time I'm going to put the calculation in the Rhone calm shelf. So I'm just gonna, rightly can say new calculation. I know that what I want to do is a some of profit close bracket divided by a some of Siles plus bracket. So many up with exactly the same thing as I did before and the same as before. I don't need profit. I don't need sales, and I can still get the same calculation. The difference is this is a calculation that only exists on the shelf. It doesn't exist as a measure. Yet I can leave it on the Rochel forever, and it will only exist in the sheet. But if I need it to use somewhere else, I could quite easily just drag it back into the measure area. And it creates a new calculated field like a cold. This operating margin and in effect, it does exactly the same thing is margin. If I look at my margin code and looks like that, if I look at my operating margin code, it's the same coat because that's what I typed in on the rush off. So it depends on what you want to do. Some people are more comfortable coming over he and cried in calculated fields, and some people are more comfortable creating them directly on the shelf. Just remember that if you're creating them directed on the shelf, they only work on this sheet unless you dragged them back into the measures area and create the calculated measure permanently. And the difference between calculated measures and riel missions of the calculated measures have the equal signs beside them just to the left of the data type, so you'll see a tiny little equal sign there, and that's it for calculated fields 12. Combo Graphs: Hi guys. It's Chris McClelland here again, and this time we're going to have a listen on combo graphs. So there's two sorts of graphs on what to cover, and we'll do the easier one first, and then we'll do the one that's a little bit harder. Second. So the easier one is, let's say we've got something like Order Date and we've got sales. That's a pretty easy. That's a line. And I might change that to a bar just to make it easier, and I want to make it a little bit bigger than that. Now. What we want to do with this is shows sales, but I also want to show profit. Now, if I do profit like this, I'm gonna end up with two grafs because I've got two measures on my rose. I've got two graphs. I would also like profit to be a line so I can do that. That's easy as well, but I also want them over laid on each other. So to do the overlaying pond I can click on here, go to Jewell excess, and it's now a jewel access so you can see the difference. He's if we undo this for a minute. When they're different axes, the fields, the little green parts up here have got a rounded corner. If I redo module access, they've now got square corners. So that's how you tell ADR Alexis what you're seeing now from when they're two different axes, you can also see that the axes values a different. So this is up to 700,000 here. This is up to 90,000. He so you might like to synchronizes axes as well. And then the 90,000 on this side is exactly the same as the 90,000 on that side. You can see the scout goes up 700 k on this side 700. Count that side in the same place. So I could also right click on these access and turned off by disabling show header. Okay, so that's one sort of combat graph. The more complex combo graphs. Let's start with the same thing will put order date on our columns. We'll put sales on a rose all trying to be a bar. I'll make it a little bit bigger so we can see what's going on. And this time I want to see my margin on my second access again. The same thing, different graphs. I want to duel access that. Okay, we need to continue on and do some more things because at the moment I've got sales is a bar. I've also got margin as a bar. So because I've got two fields up here, I've got to mass cards on my margin marks card. I can change toe a line, and now I've got sales going up to 700 k but my margin going up to 14%. So I don't have the same sort of axes on both sides, and I can see that it relates the line relates to the margin and the bars polite to Siles. Now the third sort of combat graf I want to show you is something I do quite often and again do it the same way. And let's put year on our columns. But to put sales on a rose, let's change it to a bar. But I'm also interested at the moment in seeing the makeup off my different categories within each year. So far put category on color. I can now see how much in the years furniture how much in your office supplies. And how much in the years technology, If I turn on my labels, I can see the values for each of those. But what I don't get is a total value. So if I didn't have category here, I can get a total as soon as I put category and color. I know Mr Total. So what I'm going to do? He's duplicate sales up here. I can just control dragged that. I've got two graphs again because I've got two graphs. I've got two mascots. I get it. One of the marks cards and remove color. We're getting there, but I still want that total number on top off my stock bar again. If I Jewel AC system, we're still got some things to do. I can also see that my access on this side is just a little bit out of sync with my access on this side. So if I synchronized my access, that's better. On the only thing that we've got left to change is that the colored stacked bars and now sitting behind the gray bar. So there's a few things I can do to change that. The easiest one used to just swap these tiles, and that's actually what I want to do. If I undo that, I could simply also right click on the access and say Move marks to back, and that would do the same thing. So what I'm gonna end up with is obviously a stack bar. The total on top. The access on the left is exactly sames access on the right, so we don't need to show those we can turn off the head off. So that's a combo because it's a stacked bar based on category and just a normal bar chart combo together. Or I can do numbers on the left and a percentage or some other completely different scale on the right. Or I could also do a BA and the line looking at the same numbers. It just depends if you synchronize the access or don't synchronize the access. But in all of these, you'll want a jewel axis, which means the corners, a square rather in the corners being round. That's it for combo graphs 13. Discrete and Continuous: Hi guys. It's Chris McClelland here again, and this time and topic is discreet versus continuous. So this is a theory in Tumbler about how values treated. So let's start with an easy example. I comport order date up here again and I can put sales upon my row shelf if I change this and say over and look at the months in each year, I've got my cells over months now let's just go back a step from there When I first port order date on the field was blue. Okay, Blue means discreet green mains continuous. The difference is discreet. I've got four different venues. 10 here, continuous. I've got basically a number scale up the side when I changed my format for my dates, dimension or my order date to mention up. Here are the discrete values and then down here, other continuous values. Or I could change it down here and say discrete or continuous. So if I chose from the continuous section and I chose month, the field goes to green to indicate that it's continuous. I'm looking at sounds of the continuous, so I've basically got a number scale on the Y axis or on the Roche off and also a scale on the X axis or the column shelf. Now, a few different things here. If I want to remove September 2014 I can just click on that field and excluded. So now the line goes directly from August to October. It's a bit hard to see in a line graph, but if we changes to a bar graph, I can easily see that the value has disappeared. August. Nothing in September and in October aren't the gap in the middle of September, because I've said I'm not using September Now, if that was discreet, I don't have a gap. I can't see a gap in my bars, but I can definitely see a gap in my values that jump straight from August to October. If I remove my filter, I'll get September back. So as discrete, it handles each value independently as continuous. It knows what the line between them is. It's like a continuous line. And again, even if I'd remove November 2014 it still leaves the gap. It's still knows that there's in November 2014. It just knows that there's no doctor, for it, goes straight from October 2 December. You also say this a few times when you hover over the fields. If you hover, every order dimensions they blue and if you hover over or your measures the green. But it's not that dimensions of blue and measures of green dimensions automatically come up as being discreet. Measures will automatically come up is being continuous. But any date dimension you can choose between discreet, which looks like that and continuous, which looks like that, whether it's a BA or line. But obviously, if I choose a line, it jumps over. The gap goes directly from October to December. There is no in November in the middle, and it's anyone choose a bar. I can see that there's a gap Davis just joining this point to this point and you'll notice in the filter shelf. It's a discrete value. If I looked at the filter for that, it's a discreet filter. I can choose this venue, end this venue and this value, or if we turned around the other way and include as values. Those are the values that I want included. Why is there a big gap between January and generating? Because it support those two years of months in between because it's continuous. If I change is too discreet, the bars will be beside each other because it doesn't understand that there's two years of values between them. It's just a value here and another value here. If I go back to continuous, I've got the gap. I could also change my filter to be continuous in and will change the way the filter works . So now I've got a slider bar, which is okay, That's what I want. And I show that full for again. And now I can say which valued I want to end with and which valued or want to start with. And it shows me everything in the range. But again, a continuous range. I can move the range up and down. I can adjust the start and I can adjust the end. But I get everything between the start in the end because it's a continuous filter. I say the gaps here. There's no dollar because it's a continuous dimension on my column shelf and your measures are almost always continuous because it's a scale going up and down the side. If I change us back to this great, the filter will disappear. I can now pick my individual values, but and again I get the gaps because it's continuous. I switch this back to this great when I get those individual months beside each other because it's now discreet, So I had that helps. Blue fields are always discrete fields, grain fields or a wise continuous fields. 14. Dashboards: Hi guys. It's Chris McClellan here again, and this time we're talking that day sports. So for many dashboards is probably the most exciting part of tableaux. It's where you actually start putting all your sheets together and get them to make sense from a business point of view so you can actually show uses what the daughter is and how it relates to each other. So to start using a dashboard, we click on this button down he, which is new dashboard. You could also do it from the menu as well and just say new dashboard. But my preferences always use the temps down the bottom. Okay, there's a new dashboard now. One of the first things we need to do is figure out what size we're going to make it, so that would depend on your user audience. You can make it a fixed size or in automatic size. If I choose automatic, it just uses my whole screen all the time, or you could set it to a range of values as well. Okay, so I'm gonna go with fixed, and I'm not going to use a custom size. I'm just going to use a laptop browser size purely so I can see it, the whole dashboard on my screen. So throughout the course, so far we've been building a few sheets, and you can see them over here. So we've got the thumbnail for a bar graph our profit line graph and after a man and cheat for it's a blank sheet you can see when we started. There's nothing on that sheet, but I still can use it. Could it develop? Treat. So on the dashboard, I'm going to bring in my bar graph, and that's just this simple is dragging it if you want to, and dropping it on the dashboard now because we're using a tiled dashboard to begin with. When I dragged that in, it takes up all the space that's available on the dashboard. When I dragging my second sheet, it takes up half of the space between the top and bottom for that graph, and when I bring in my tree map, depending on where I put it, it will take half the space again. So every time you add a sheet entire land, it takes half the space, half the space half space. If I put a sheet here, it would take half the space again. So really, what you're looking for for just under this is when you're dragging your second sheet in. Where do you want to place it? On the bottom, on the left, on the top, or on the right Is just where your mass pointed is at the time will determine where it gets inserted. Now, if you don't like that way of designing dashboards, we can use the floating method. Now, floating means when I bring in my bar graph, it takes up only that size. It still brings the filter. It still brings the legend. But now these things can be wherever I want them to be. So I could have the graft being here or I could have the graft being here. I can put it wherever I like. Also, See, I've got some white space down here so I can click on the container menu and going to fit, and I usually say entire view the circumstances where you wouldn't choose entire view, but just for the ease of this level will to his entire view. And now it doesn't matter how big the contain Aries The graph. We'll always take up all the room in the container now. Well, I've got to do is position the graph where I would like it. So I'm gonna have that graph just there. Make it a little bit shorter, but wider, and that looks good to me. You'll say that the filter still controls what I see in the graph. The legend changes depending on the colors, and the title of the graph is the name of my sheet. So if I wanted to change that, I could go back to my bar graph right click, rename sheet and say, bar graph with a daughter, the end and then on my dashboard it's instantly changed. Or I could just double click on the title here and say, What I'm really looking at is sales by segment. I don't have to have segment. He I can just right click and say, Hide feel labels from Rose. And if I know that it sells because it can, the hitting tells me I can right click, edit my access, remove the title, and now the graph is taking up a little bit less spicy for want to be and still have that same information there. I'll do the same with my profit long graph. Drag that in. I'm not make it more of ah short A graph again. I'm not saying all the information. I can fit entire view. It's already on entire view. I'm just gonna lay it out. Southern actually looks nice, and I'll put the year filter for profit over on the right. Finally, I'm gonna bring in my train map. Put it here. I don't like that. Fill up that spice there on 10 space in the right so I can say fit entire view and it takes up a lot spice. So using floating, I've got the option of putting from white space around it quite easily. You can still do that entire. That just takes a little bit more work. Also on my dashboard, I can have some container objects. So horizontal and vertical containers if I want to group certain objects together so I could just drag it textbooks up here and say This is the executive dashboard on that fund's gonna be very small so I can get back in and edit the text highlighted and say I want that is 20 point bold and that will change now. The textbooks too small make the textbooks of it bigger so you can see the whole text and then position it where you need it to pay. I can bring in images I can bring in Web pages or more importantly, when you're tiled, I can bring in blanks as well, just to pet things out the right way. I'm sort of happy with this dashboard on. Just change a few more things here. I'm going to get the access turn off the title. I'm not to profit second turn off the title from there as well. But the one thing that's bugging me the most at the moment is I've got filters up here to change my cells graph. But I've also got a different filter down here to change my profit graph. I've also got that legend that's moving in the middle, So what I might like to do is have the one filter control both grafts. So I'm going to choose this filter click on the menu, going to apply to worksheets, selected worksheets, and I know that my straight worksheets on here, a bar graph and the tree map I'm going to apply that filter toe All three graphs click. OK, and now, as I change my filter, they should all change. Okay, Now, I don't really need this filter anymore because it's not serving any purpose. I can actually get rid of it and what I like to do. Sometimes it's go back to this sheet and just check that I've only got one year filter on here. Sometimes you can get into a situation where you got many different year filters and you could see that this one applies to all the sheets. But you might have one that only applies to this sheet, and that will actually make up the way your dashboard works. So I'm not going to move this filter up here. I'm going to change the heading or the title of that full drive to say, reporting you. My profit legend relates to this craft and him, but my cells legend relates to this graph up here they both blue, which is a problem as well, especially if you're looking at proper visual analytics. Design is you can't use blue in the same place all the time, so I'm going to go in and edit the colors on this and say my sales palette is a grain palette, okay? And that's actually a legend for the treatment down below. So in this graph, when I look at it, the color is derived by profit and for here profit. We put it under this graph at the moment. So it sounds, really does relate to down him. The prophet relates to describe up here. The profit line graph probably doesn't have a color on it, so it's always going to be blue. So you might like to change that to be maybe black. So it's a neutral color, and at dashboards coming together, it could be a lot better. But for this class, it's just a quite simple dashboard. We can change the title here and say profit by quarter. This tree map is sales versus profit, and we've now got a dashboard where, as I choose the filter, everything changes the legends of in the right place the crafts air in the light place, according to where I want to put, um, I could balance things out a little bit more, but I'm not gonna worry about it. And we have our dashboard and we still have a negatives when they show, and if I choose a different year, we don't get any negatives at all, said negatives on the appear in some years again, change the name of your dashboard. And now anyone who uses his dashboard I'll see the dashboards size of 800 by 600. They'll see the filter. They and they'll know how to use that. And they'll see these three graphs. You can also have many dashboards in your same workbook, so I can just keep on creating new dashboards as I need them with different content. And then when you publish, you'll be able to show that uses the different dashboards and they can navigate between them. That's the end of this lesson about dashboards. 15. Architecture: Hi, guys. It's Christmas clone here again, and in this lesson will be learning about the tableau architecture. Up until now, we've been using tablet desktop, and that's the application that you install on your PC or your Mac. And it's where you connect data, Build up your sheets, create your dashboards and basically get your daughter ready for viewing by your users to send that dashboard or those sheets out to your users, you need tableau server in some shape or form. Install it either on a server that you have on premises or in the cloud, and you've got to buy the license for tablets over but allows all of your users to access the dashboards that you've built in Tableau desktop. Another option is to use tableau online for tableau online. You still need to buy a license, but Tumbler looks after the hosting the upgrades, the maintenance that bandwidth, everything that needs to be done around the tableau server tableaux themselves Look after if you got trouble. One line. So the difference between the two is tumblers server. You pay for a new upgrade. It yourself tableaux online used to will pay for it, but tablet does that hosting for you, we're going to use another option, which is called tablet public and tablet. Public is awesome, because tableaux have also enabled people to create their data visualizations and upload them into a tumbler. Public tablet public is free. It's completely free. But what you'll find is that whenever you actually save things onto tablet public, anybody can download both the visualization and the doctor. So there's a little different visualizations that you can see him. I'm just going to go into the gallery and we brought a visit the day or featured, and you can scroll down through that to see all the different things that people have posted. And the beauty of public public is. I can actually go to that visualization when it loads up. I can use the visualization from within tablet public or one of the better options is I can also download the visualization and download the workbook. So if you ever need to find out how they actually did this dashboard, you can simply download the workbook open up in tableau and see both the data and the dashboard design as well. Okay, so that also means that anything that you publish Hunter by public. Anybody else in the world can download your workbook. Can I put it up? Conceive the data and the dashboards and the sheets and everything in there. So that's the different pieces of the architecture for tableau. We've got trouble. A desktop. That's what we've been using all the time. It's what this cause concentrates on, and further courses will as well. We've got tablets server if you want to host it on Prem or in clown, but you're doing the maintenance over the tub or server implementation or Tello online. Where? Tableau doll that maintenance for you. That's the end of this Listen. 16. File Types: Hi, guys. It's Christmas felon here again. And this is the lesson on file types within tableau. We'll only be looking at a few of the file types, which we use in the central training. There is other found types I won't talk about, but we're just going to cover off the essentials in this training, the same as with the other functionality said it. Begin with I need to save my file. Now I know I'm going to post this on troubled public. So what I really need to do when I do with save as is I need to save it as a packaged workbook because a normal workbook won't work on tablet public. So just to look at this in a bit more detail, a tabloid workbook is the formatting in the workbook, but not the data. The data is always separate, so if that's in an Excel file or in a database or somewhere else, that the doctor is somewhere else when you're using a tablet workbook. If we're using a package workbook, the data is in the workbook with the formatting. To make this work properly, I actually need to go back to my data source and make it an extract. So at the moment it's a live connection. So that means that the doctor is sitting in excel and tableau is reading the data from Excel all the time. We need to change this into an extract, and it's a simple is clicking on that radio button, waiting for to refresh and then going back to any other sheet or dashboard. The extract it's created and the only trained you can see here is that in the data source list, you can see that there's two cylinders in the icon or two databases in the iconic feel like indicating that it's an extract. If I right click here, I can now see that I'm using an extract. And if I wanted to change the data in that extract, I would have to go in and refresh the data this way so I can still change my Excel file. But to get those changes into tableau, I would need to refresh my extracted here said. Now that I have my extract, I can come and save my workbook as a proper package workbook. I'm going to rename it properly my shorts, package workbook and safe it the same as any other program. I can now see the name of my workbook up here, and as I make changes, I should be saving them as I go. I can also see using Fall Explorer saved in the right place, and it's only fairly small 2400 k because the database I'm looking at is very small as well . In the next lesson will be publishing this workbook to tell by public. 17. Publishing: like I said, Chris McCullen here again, and these lesson we're covering how to publish our work to tabligh public. It's a very similar process if you're publishing to double our server, but you would need a tubal service set up, so it's easier to show you tell by public the warning of that tablet public is as soon as you publish. Other people can download your work, which would be the dashboard and the data. So please make sure that you're not publishing confidential data to tell my public. So he's my dashboard, and the first thing I need to do is go to the server menu and go to tablet public. Obviously, if you are publishing to your own tumbler server, you'd be signing in him on publishing him. But by using template public and I want to save to tell by public pops up the door logbooks just looking, using the user name and password that you've already got defined the trouble of public and signing package on the workbook, published views and load up a browser window showing you your dashboard now on tabloid public. So I concurrency my details and I see that I've actually got five sheets published. Now, if I look at the top toolbar, I can't quite see it on here because of the details. So I can click on edit details and down the bottom. I've got the details of my dashboard, the name the Perma link. If you using in a blow go something a longer description about it. Do I share the view controls? Do I share the author profile? There was show, allow workbook and it started to be downloaded by others that some form of protection and oh, I show workbook shakes his tabs. So if you've got multiple dashboards, it might be wise to show this. And then once you've got all those sittings saved the right way, you can click on safe. That workbook is now visible on tablet public, but we'll see if we get up top. I can see my individual shapes here, and I don't really want to see that. I just want to see the dashboard itself and any other dashboard that I've got in my workbook so I can come back to tableau and what we didn't see before is it. If I right, click on the sheet name because the sheets on a dashboard. I can hide it and the same for my profit line graph and the same for the train map. But sheet for is not included in any dashboard. It also I've only got the option to delete it. But ever look a treat for its blank anyway, so I can just delete it. I've now got my dashboard. I've still got my sheets. I can still go to my sheets if I need to, but because they're hidden as soon as I click away from them, they hide again. Now, if I save this workbook and then publish it again, template public, Save the temple of Public. I'm already loading, so it just does the publish straight a line, and you can always see who you look dinners by looking down in the bottom right corner. It opens up another browser tab posts up the workbook again. I can edit my details again. Click on it, it tells, and even though I've still got show sheets is tabs. I I didn't change anything, so I can't save it. Just say, Got it. I don't have any tabs up at the top of the moment because I've only got one dashboard. If I had to dashboards you'd see the temps for the dashboards only. But it's the same as my workbook. Now it looks like I've only got one dashboard and nothing else because all the other sheets of hidden and the same in mind browser I can now choose my filter. And it changed the whole dashboard as well. It is important when you're publishing as well to make sure that your filters are set to what you want them to be set to. So if I had published this is 2014 I would be changing it all the time to 2017. Okay, So if there's a setting that you want there, then make sure that's like that. Now that I've looked at this dashboard, I want the heading on these two graphs be aligned so I could just move that up a little bit , squeeze it up a little bit so I can put the legend down the bottom again. Save it locally, publish it back to Temple in public, knows who I am because I'm already logged in. It knows what the workbooks called because it's already been published. Netflix over to the browser. I don't need to change any settings in my details, so I can just say, Got it. And they can see the legend is now under the graph. So you might be publishing a few times became with just to make sure that the layout is actually perfect. So that's how you published a doublet public. 18. Resources: Hi, guys. It's Christmas clone here again. Just on a resource is point of view to help you learn Tableau Mawr. The two best resource is I know Off is the Tablet Community Forum, so create your profile at community dot tumbler dot com. You'll see within the forum, you've got a few different sections. You can access the recent content browser Top discussions Go and find that the answer to other people's questions, if you like. There's different areas for different discussions, so you can see in the forums the server forums, developer community canvas. If you want to get involved in a local user group, you can find all the information here in the user groups, and you can see there's a map off all the user groups around the world again. Tableau using tableau. So here's all the user groups for the different regions around the world. Just choose your area and there will probably be a group there. Also on Twitter, there's always a lot of conversation that tableau this several different hashtags, but the main one would be hashtag tableau Tableau software is there, and tablet public is also there. So following just those hashtags or those people, and you build up who the other people are that you want to follow. And there's always some interesting content on their Ah, lot of people also have personal blog's, so I won't call that any blog's in particular. But you will find the people that you enjoy reading the material on Twitter, and they'll usually post a link to their bloggers. Well, that's it for Resource is in the final listen will just have a quick summary. 19. Summary: my guys, it's Chris for the final summary lesson within this course. So again, this is essentials training for tableau. We've only just touched the service in what trouble could do. We've only looked at a few things to just get you started. But you should feel comfortable now in taking a daughter's hit, creating some graphs, putting them in a dashboard and publishing them on tablet public. I'd love to see the dashboards that you do. The best way to contact me is why Tweet, huh? My handle is CMC you on? I'd love to see the work that you've done. If you've got more confidential data that you can't share on tabligh public, you could email it to me as well. And I just like to encourage you to get in and learn tablet more. You learn more by playing with it. So the best thing to do to learn tableau is just play with some more data, feel more dashboards, published them online and get feedback and share your discoveries with other people. If there's anything else you need to learn in tableau, please let us know and we can include that in the future course as well. I hope you enjoy the course
